Robert Davis, also known as DJ Screw, pioneered an art form that would affect the world. DJ Screw did not invent the pitch control switch to slow down records. DJ Screw did not come up with the idea to use the crossfader to create a "chop" effect on records. In fact, DJ Screw wasn't the first to scratch a record, put a "break" in a record or blend instrumentals over records. But what DJ Screw did do, was bring all those DJ elements together to form his own unique style. A style that gave Texas rappers an outlet to be heard. A style that changed Houston to Screwston. And a style that represents the Texas rap and hip-hop sound to the world. This style is commonly referred to as "Screwed and Chopped" or "Screwed" for short. "Screwed" refers to the slowed down pitch and some of today's DJ's call their mixes "Screwed" because of this, yet some DJ's call their mixes "Screwed" to honor the namesake of the originator, DJ Screw. But take it from me, Swindall, it's not "Screwed" if DJ Screw did not mix it. Truth be told, "Screwed" is an art form that can only be replicated by DJ Screw himself. You "I call it 'Screwed' to carry his name on" DJ, start labeling your mixes "Slowed and Chopped" or associate yourself in the naming of your mixes. Continuously running DJ Screw's name through the mud will not get you respect from the true screw heads, no matter how good you are. Take accountability for what you're putting out to the world, that's what I do. My name is Swindall and "Swindall'd and Chopped" is what I name my mixes. Labeling my mixes "Swindall'd and Chopped" separates me from the pack of DJ's who do this style of music. There is only one Swindall, just like there is only one DJ Screw. My way of mixing is unique to me, just like DJ Screw's way of mixing was unique to him. I apply to my mixes what I like about the style as a fan. The tracks I mix are slowed down enough to change the pace, but not ridiculously slow. The "chops" I place throughout a track are carefully chosen. Whether the "chop" be on a vocal or instrumental part of a track, it is not overdone. The "bring back break" is reserved for certain phrases that I feel need to be emphasized. I may place "chops" on certain terms used in the phrase before or after the "bring back break." I'll mix certain phrases at the beginning of a track and sometimes over the chorus throughout the track. It is rare for me to use the "flanging" or any other sound distorting effect, unless I feel it enhances my mix for the better. As far as branding my mixes, I don't shout or say my name on a track, because the way I mix a track speaks for itself and thus is the brand. My mixes combine and balance out the DJ'ing elements I've mentioned perfectly to form "The Art Of Swindall'd And Chopped."
