गोष्ट राजूची (बालकथा)

राजू खूपच बारीक मुलगा होता. सगळे त्याला काडीपहिलवान म्हणून चिडवत असत. त्याला नेहमी वाटायचं की चांगलं जाडंजुडं व्हावं. त्याकरता तो रोज डॉक्टरांनी दिलेल्या व्हिटॅमिन्सच्या गोळ्या घ्यायचा. ’गोळ्यांबरोबर पोळीभाजी पण खायला हवी.’ असं डॉक्टर सांगायचे. राजूला भाज्या खायला अजिबात आवडत नव्हतं. त्यामुळे गोळ्या घेऊनही राजू बारीकच राहिला होता.

आज तो शाळेत गेला असताना जाड्याजुड्या चिंटूने त्याला काडीपहिलवान म्हणून चिडवलं होतं आणि एक जोरदार ठोसा पण ठेवून दिला होता. त्या ठोशाने त्याचं सगळं अंग ठणकत होतं. पण बारीकसा राजू चिंटूला काहीच करू शकला नव्हता. शाळेतून घरी आल्यावर चिंटूला कशी अद्दल घडवावी याचाच तो विचार करत होता.

जेवण झाल्यावर त्याला दुपारच्या वेळी झोप यायला लागली. तेवढ्यात आई त्याला म्हणाली, "राजू, हे शंभर रुपये ठेव. थोड्या वेळाने आपला दूधवाला येईल त्याला दे. मी तुझ्याकरता चिवडा करुन ठेवते. मला माझ्या कामातून उठवू नकोस." राजूने पैसे खिशात ठेवले आणि तो झोपला.

ठक्‌ठक्‌, ठक्‌ठक्‌ दाराची कडी वाजत होती. राजू उठला. दूधवाला आला असणार म्हणून त्यानं दार उघडलं. दारात कोणीतरी वेगळाच माणूस उभा होता. तो राजूला म्हणाला, “मी मेडिसन कंपनीमधून आलोय. आमच्या कंपनीने काही गोळ्या तयार केल्या आहेत. लाल बाटलीतल्या गोळ्या घेतल्यावर माणूस उंच आणि जाडा होतो. निळ्या बाटलीतल्या गोळ्या घेतल्यावर माणूस बुटका आणि बारीक होतो. तुझ्यासारख्या मुलाला या गोळ्या घ्यायलाच हव्यात.”

“काय? खरंच का या गोळ्या घेतल्यावर माणूस जाड होतो आणि तेही पोळीभाजी खाल्ल्याशिवाय?” राजूने आश्चर्याने विचारलं. “होय. एक वर्षाची गॅरंटी आहे.” “मग मला ह्या गोळ्या घेतल्याच पाहिजेत. पण आई रागवेल. ह्याची किंमत पण जास्त असेल.” राजू म्हणाला. “तुझ्यासारख्या मुलाने ह्या गोळ्या घेतल्या तर आई अजिबात रागवणार नाही. दोन्ही बाटल्यांची किंमत फक्त दहा रुपये आणि चुकून एखाद्या बाटलीतला गोळ्यांचा डोस जास्त झाला तर दुसर्‍या बाटलीतल्या गोळ्या खायच्या.” त्या माणसानं सांगितलं.

राजूने उत्सुकतेनं दूधवाल्याच्या पैशांतून दहा रु. देऊन त्या बाटल्या विकत घेतल्या. आईला अचानक आश्चर्यचकित करायचं ठरवून त्याने लाल बाटलीतल्या पाच-सात गोळ्या भराभर खाऊन टाकल्या. आणि हे काय? एकदम त्याचं डोकं ठणकन्‌ कशाला तरी आपटलं. त्याने इकडेतिकडे पाहिलं, त्याचं डोकं छताला टेकलं होतं. त्याचा आकार अजूनही वाढत होता. राजू आता त्या खोलीत मावत नसल्याने त्याच्या धक्क्याने घराची एक भिंत कोसळून खाली पडली. तो आवाज ऐकून राजूची आई धावत बाहेर आली. राजूला बघून, “भूत, भूऽऽत धावा, वाचवा,” असं ओरडायला लागली.

“अगं आई, मी आहे तुझा राजू.” असं त्याने सांगायचा प्रयत्न केल्यावर भूत बोलतंय हे बघून तिला चक्कर आली आणि ती सोफ्यावर कोसळली. तेवढ्यात शेजारच्या काकू आणि दोघंतिघंजण आपल्या घराकडे येत आहेत हे बघून राजू तिथून बाहेर पडला. त्याला बघून सगळे घाबरले. राक्षस समजून काही लोक त्याला दगड मारायला लागले. ते दगड राजूला फुलासारखे वाटत होते. “आता बघतो त्या चिंटूला. शाळेत मला मारतो काय? पहा आता.” असं म्हणून राजू चिंटूच्या घराच्या दिशेने चालायला लागला.

चिंटू गॅलरीत चित्र काढत बसला होता. राजू त्याच्या घराजवळ आला. त्याने आपले लांब हात गॅलरीत घालून चिंटूला उचललं. चिंटू घाबरला, “सोड मला. कोण आहेस तू? मला खाऊ नको.” असं ओरडायला लागला. “यापुढे शाळेतल्या राजूला त्रास देशील? मारशील त्याला?” राजूने रागाने विचारलं. “नाही, नाही, सोड मला. चुकलं माझं.” चिंटू त्याला विनवायला लागला. राजूने चिंटूला अलगद चेंडूसारखं उडवलं. तो त्याला झेलणार इतक्यात एका हत्तीने चिंटूला सोंडेत पकडलं. तो गावात आलेल्या सर्कसचा हत्ती होता. राजूने चिंटूला तिथून उचलून त्याच्या घराच्या गच्चीवर ठेवून दिलं.

त्या हत्तीने समोरच्या एका दुकानातून भलं मोठं आईस्क्रिमचं भांडं उचललं आणि राजूच्या हातात दिलं. आईस्क्रिम खात खात राजू हत्तीवर बसला आणि घरी यायला निघाला. उंदरावर बसलेल्या गणपतीसारखा तो दिसत होता. घरासमोर आल्यावर त्याच्या लक्षात आलं की, आई त्याला आता ओळखणार नाही. पुन्हा पूर्वीसारखं व्हायला हवं. बागेत उभं राहून त्याने निळ्या बाटलीतल्या पाच-सात गोळ्या काढल्या आणि पटकन खाऊन टाकल्या. पण डोस जरा जास्तच झाला होता. आता राजू एकदम छोटा झाला होता. इतका छोटा की त्याला बागेतली गवताची पाती मोठ्या झाडांसारखी वाटत होती. त्याचं घर तिथून खूप दूर होतं. एखाद्या भल्यामोठ्या पर्वतासारखं ते वाटत होतं. राजूला आता खूप भीती वाटू लागली. त्याच्या हातातल्या बाटल्या पण खूप मोठ्या झाल्या होत्या. तो त्यांच्याखाली चेंगरलाच असता. त्याने कशाबशा त्या बाटल्या त्याच्यापासून दूर जमिनीला टेकवल्या. आता त्या बाटल्यांमधल्या गोळ्यांपर्यंत तो कधीच पोचू शकणार नव्हता आणि नेहमीसारखा होऊ शकणार नव्हता.

आईला न सांगता त्या गोळ्या विकत घेतल्याचा राजूला आता पश्चाताप होत होता. एवढ्यात त्याला एक जेटविमान आणि एक हेलिकॉप्टर त्याच्या दिशेने येताना दिसले. ते जवळ आल्यावर त्याला कळलं की जेटविमान म्हणजे एक फुलपाखरु आणि हेलिकॉप्टर म्हणजे एक मधमाशी होती. “मला जरा मदत कराल का?” राजूने त्यांना विचारलं. “कोण बरं हा प्राणी? पूर्वी कधी पाहिला नव्हता इथे.” मधमाशी फुलपाखराला म्हणाली. तिने सगळ्या प्राण्यांना हा नवीन प्राणी बघायला बोलावले. तिथे उंदीर, झुरळ, सरडा, पाल, मुंग्या, माशा, फुलपाखरं आणि वेगवेगळे पक्षी जमा झाले. ते सगळे राजूपेक्षा मोठे आणि भयानक दिसत होते. ह्या नवीन प्राण्याला निरखून पाहत होते.

“मी काही प्राणी नाही. मी त्या समोरच्या घरातला राजू आहे.” राजूने सांगितलं. “हाच नेहमी आम्हांला पकडतो.” फुलपाखरु म्हणालं. “हाच नेहमी आम्हांला दगड मारतो.” पक्षी म्हणाले. “मारा त्याला.” सगळे ओरडले. “मला मारु नका. मी चुकलो. पुन्हा असं करणार नाही.” राजू ओरडला. पण सगळेजण त्याला मारायला येतच होते. तो गोळ्यांच्या बाटल्यांकडे धावला. पण त्याचे हात गोळ्यांपर्यंत पोचत नव्हते. “वाचवा” तो जोरात ओरडला.

“काय झालं राजू? स्वप्न पडलं की काय?” आई त्याला विचारत होती. तो घरातच होता. शंभर रुपये त्याच्या खिशात व्यवस्थित होते. म्हणजे हे सगळं स्वप्न होतं तर! “आता यापुढे मी कधीही नुसत्या गोळ्या खाणार नाही. त्याऐवजी सगळ्या भाज्या खाईन. रोजचं सगळं जेवण जेवेन.” राजूने मनाशी निश्चय केला.

सदाबहार गुलाबी जास्वंद

मागच्या वर्षी एप्रिल महिन्यात भर दुपारच्या वेळी नगर जिल्ह्यातल्या एका बागायती शेताला भेट देण्याचा योग आला. शेतात चिकूची झाडे लावली होती आणि झाडांच्या मधल्या मोकळ्या जागेत गहू लावला होता. गहू कापणीला आल्याने त्याची कापणी चालू होती. पण भर दुपारची वेळ असल्याने तिथे उभे राहून ते दृश्य पाहण्यात अजिबात मौज वाटत नव्हती. उन्हाने जीवाची अशी काहिली होत असतांनाच अचानक शेतातल्या पायवाटेच्या टोकाकडे लक्ष गेले, तिथे एक जास्वंदीचे झाड फुलांनी लगडून गेले होते, त्याची गुलाबी फुले वार्‍याने हलत होती. ते नेत्रसुखद दृश्य पाहून सारा शीण दूर पळाला.

ते जास्वंदीचे झाड माझ्या मनात अगदी भरले होते, इतके की तिथून निघतांना मी त्या झाडाच्या फांद्या घरी लावण्यासाठी मागून घेतल्या. शेतमालकांनी माळ्याला हाक मारल्यावर त्यानेही तत्परतेने झाडाच्या फांद्या कापून त्यांचा जुडगा बांधून दिला. या फांद्यांबरोबर त्याने मिरची जास्वंदीच्याही काही फांद्या दिल्या होत्या. घरी पोहोचल्यावर दुसर्‍या दिवशी मी त्या फांद्या दिसेल त्या रिकाम्या कुंडीत रोवून दिल्या.

गॅलरीच्या बॉक्स ग्रीलमध्ये मी माझ्या झाडांच्या कुंड्या ठेवलेल्या आहेत. पूर्वी गॅलरीच्या अरूंद बाजूकडून घरात भरपूर ऊन येत असे, तेव्हा तिथे गुलाब लावले होते. पण नंतर आजूबाजूला झालेल्या बांधकामामुळे तिथून येणारे ऊन अगदीच कमी झाले. आता फक्त गॅलरीच्या रूंद बाजूकडून सकाळी आठ ते नऊ या वेळात थोडेफार ऊन येते आणि दुपारी साडेतीन ते पाच या वेळात रस्त्यापलिकडच्या बाजूच्या समोरच्या इमारतीच्या काचांवरून परावर्तित होऊन थोडा सूर्यप्रकाश झाडांवर पडतो. इतक्या कमी सूर्यप्रकाशामुळे आणि गॅलरीची रुंद बाजू अगदी रस्त्यासमोर येत असल्याने तिथल्या कुंड्यांत मी फक्त शोभेची झाडेच लावलेली होती. आता तिथल्याच काही रिकाम्या कुंड्यांत मी या जास्वंदीच्या फांद्या लावल्या होत्या.

इतके कमी ऊन मिळत असूनही गुलाबी जास्वंदीच्या दोन फांद्या आणि मिरची जास्वंदीच्या (न उमलणारी लाल कळीची जास्वंद) तीन फांद्या छान रुजल्या, वाढल्या आणि बघता बघता ग्रीलच्या बाहेरही गेल्या. आता त्यांना ग्रीलच्या आतही आणि बाहेरही कळ्या येतात. गुलाबी जास्वंद आता छान बहरली आहे, या सप्टेंबर महिन्यापासून दर आठवड्याला दोनदा किंवा तीनदा तरी तिची फुले मिळतच आहेत. फक्त पावणेदोन वर्षांत गुलाबी जास्वंदीचे खोड पाच फुटांपेक्षाही जास्त उंच वाढले आहे. आता तर इमारतीच्या कुंपणापलिकडे असलेल्या उंच फुटपाथवरूनही तिची फुले सहज काढता येतात. सहसा मी कळी उमलण्याच्या आदल्या रात्रीच ती काढून घेत असल्याने लोकांचे या झाडाकडे फारसे लक्ष गेले नव्हते. पण समोरच्या इमारतीतली एक मुलगी पहाटेच्या वेळी येऊन या झाडावरच्या कच्च्या कळ्याही तोडायला लागली, त्यामुळे हल्ली पहाटेच्या वेळी या झाडाकडे नीट लक्ष ठेवण्याचे एक काम मात्र वाढले आहे.

असो. या कमी उन्हातही छान वाढणार्‍या गुलाबी जास्वंदीचा परिचय करून देण्यासाठी हा लेख मुद्दाम लिहित आहे. ह्या जास्वंदीचे शास्त्रीय नाव Hibiscus rosa-sinensis cultivar Albo Lacinatus असे असून, ही जास्वंद weeping Hibiscus / pink butterfly Hibiscus या नावानेही ओळखली जाते. पांढरी जास्वंद (Hibiscus arnottianus subsp. immaculatus) आणि कातरलेल्या पाकळ्यांची लाल जास्वंद (Hibiscus schizopetalus) या दोन जास्वंदींच्या संकरातून ही संकरीत गुलाबी जास्वंद तयार केली गेली आहे.

ही गुलाबी जास्वंद सदाबहार (वर्षभर फुलणारी) असून भरपूर ऊन्हात वाढतेच, पण सावलीयुक्त प्रकाशातही वाढते. ही जास्वंद कुंडीत लावता येते आणि ही १५ ते २० फुटांपर्यंत उंच वाढते. ह्या जास्वंदीला नियमितपणे कुंडीतील माती ओली राहील इतपत पाणी घातलेले पुरते. त्यापेक्षा जास्त पाणी घालू नये. ही जास्वंद भराभर वाढते आणि कठीण परिस्थितीतही तग धरून राहते. माझ्याकडच्या जास्वंदीवर मिलीबग पडले होते, पण मिलीबगने व्याप्त झालेला भाग नियमितपणे काढून टाकल्यानंतरही झाडाने चांगला तग धरला. ह्याच गुणधर्मामुळे ह्या झाडावर दुसर्‍या जास्वंदीच्या प्रकारांचे कलम केले जाते. त्यामुळे कमी प्रकाशातही फुलणारी झाडे लावायची असतील, तर त्यासाठी ही सदाबहार गुलाबी जास्वंद हा एक चांगला पर्याय आहे.

Black Grapes with Coconut Bars

Ingredients -

Grated Fresh Coconut - 4 Bowls (bowl of size 150 ml.)

Juice of Black Grapes with it's skin - 2 Bowls

Milk Powder - 2 Bowls

Sugar - 3 Bowls

Powdered Sugar - 2 Tablespoon (make using mixer)

Ghee / Butter - for greasing steel plate / tray

For Garnishing - Almonds - 5-6 Almonds scraped or sliced

Method -

1. Slightly grind the shreads of fresh coconut in mixer or grind the small pieces of fresh coconut in mixer.

2. Wash the black grapes and put it in the mixer without removing thier skin. Make 2 bowls of juice of grapes in the mixer.

3. In a cooking pan add grated fresh coconut, juice of black grapes, milk powder, sugar and heat it on a medium flame. Stir this mixture with a long handled spoon. At start this indigo coloured juicy mixture becomes watery and starts boiling and when it becomes thick it's colour changes to reddish violet colour.

4. When this mixture becomes slightly thick and started to separate from the pan, that time add the powdered sugar in it and stir it, so that the mixture will become thick in short time.

5. When the mixture becomes more thick, that time smear the ghee / butter on the steel plate / tray.

6. When the mixture becomes sufficiently thick, switch off the flame, pour the mixture in the tray and spread it evenly.

7. Put Almond scrapes or slices on this mixture and with ghee / butter smeared hand press it slightly.

8. After 25 - 30 minutes when the mixture starts to cool down, mark it with knife for making pieces.

9. Separate and remove the pieces as bars only after the mixture completely cools down.

10. From inside these bars are having slight stickiness as that of black raisins, so keep these bars in a container, cover it with lid and keep that container in refrigerator for 3 - 4 hours. The bars will be ready for eating only when it will come at normal temperature after removing from refrigerator.

Note - Do not always keep these bars in refrigerator. Cold bars just removed from refrigerator are somewhat hardy for eating. The taste of these bars increases when it is eaten at it's normal temperature stage.

काळ्या द्राक्षांची नारळी वडी

साहित्य -

ओल्या नारळाचा चव - ४ वाट्या भरून (१५० मि.ली.ची वाटी)

काळ्या द्राक्षांचा (सालीसकट) रस - २ वाट्या

मिल्क पावडर - २ वाट्या

साखर - ३ वाट्या

पिठी साखर - २ टेबलस्पून

तूप - ताटाला लावण्यासाठी

सजावटीसाठी - बदाम - ५/६ बदाम किसलेले किंवा बारीक काप केलेले

कृती -

१. नारळ खवून त्याचा चव मिक्सरमधून जरा बारीक करून घ्यावा किंवा नारळाचे लहान तुकडे करून ते मिक्सरमधून बारीक करून घ्यावे.

२. काळी द्राक्षे स्वच्छ धुवून घ्यावी आणि ती सालीसकटच मिक्सरमध्ये टाकावी. मिक्सरमधून त्यांचा २ वाट्या रस करून घ्यावा.

३. एक कढईत नारळाचा चव, काळ्या द्राक्षांचा रस, मिल्क पावडर आणि साखर हे साहित्य एकत्र करून घ्यावे आणि मध्यम आचेवर गरम करावे. ह्या मिश्रणाला लांब दांडीच्या चमच्याने हलवत राहावे. सुरूवातीला ह्या रसदार मिश्रणाला पाणी सुटून निळसर जांभळ्या रंगाचे हे मिश्रण उकळायला लागते व हळूहळू ते आटायला लागल्यावर त्याचा रंग तांबडट जांभळा होतो.

४. हे मिश्रण जरा घट्ट होऊन कढईच्या पृष्ठभागापासून सुटे व्हायला लागले, की त्यात पिठीसाखर टाकावी आणि मिश्रण हलवत राहावे, म्हणजे ते लवकर आळते (घट्ट होते).

५. मिश्रण अजून घट्ट व्हायला लागले, की एका ताटाला तूप लावून घ्यावे.

६. मिश्रण पुरेसे घट्ट झाले झाले, की आच बंद करून कढईतले मिश्रण तूप लावलेल्या ताटात काढून घेऊन ताटात सारखे पसरून घ्यावे.

७. ह्या मिश्रणावर किसलेल्या बदामाची पूड किंवा बदामाचे काप टाकून ते तूप लावलेल्या हाताने मिश्रणावर अलगद थापून घ्यावे.

८. २५ - ३० मिनिटांनी मिश्रण जरा थंड व्हायला लागले, की सुरीने वड्यांचे काप पाडून घ्यावेत.

९. मिश्रण पूर्ण थंड झाले, की मगच वड्या वेगळ्या करून काढाव्यात.

१०. ह्या वड्यांना आतून मनुकांच्या गरासारखा किंचित चिकटपणा असतो, म्हणून ह्या वड्या एका डब्यात घालून, त्या डब्याचे झाकण लावून तो डबा ३-४ तास फ्रिजमध्ये ठेवून द्यावा. डबा फ्रीजमधून बाहेर काढल्यावर वड्या सामान्य तापमानाला आल्या की खाण्यासाठी तयार होतात.

टीप - ह्या वड्या नेहमीसाठी फ्रीजमध्ये ठेवू नयेत. फ्रीजमधून काढलेल्या थंड वड्या लगेच खाल्या तर त्या चिवट लागतात. ह्या वड्या सामान्य तापमानाला असतांना खाल्या तर त्यांचा स्वाद अधिक वाढतो.

Terrarium - bottle garden

Terrarium is the bottle garden or plants fitted in closed glass container.

It was discovered accidently by Dr. Nathaniel Ward, a London physician, in 1827. Dr. Ward had a fern rockery in his backyard, but the ferns kept dying, due to the polluted air. Ward was also studying moths and caterpillars and while doing his experiments he kept a cocoon in a closed glass jar with bit of a moist soil. He observed it regularly and noticed that a Fern plant and a grass plant had grown in the bit of soil after few days. While many plants in his backyard died from the polluted air in London, these covered plants actually thrived. He then experimented successfully with covered containers for Ferns and grown them. The covered containers became popular and were called Wardian cases, the first Terrariums.

Terrariums have their own self sufficient environment. A established terrarium only needs daily indirect sunlight from outside. It do not even need water for a long period of time. The oxygen produced by the plants during photosynthesis is absorbed when they respire and the carbon dioxide liberated during respiration is used for photosynthesis in the terrarium. Also moisture in the Terrarium evaporates from the soil and plant leaves and get condensed on the Terrarium roof and walls. Then, condensed water falls down and re-moistens the soil. This is a continual, closed loop process. As long as the top is sealed, this process will continue for months. So the terrarium is like a small model of Earth which works on principle of recycling of water, oxygen and carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and respiration.

Let us see what types of plants and containers, other materials and tools are required for making a terrarium -

Plants used for making terrarium –

The moisture loving plants or plants growing in semi-shady conditions, hanging basket plants, foliage plants, succulents, low growing plants are used for making terrarium. The plants which grow in low to moderate light conditions like Ferns, Bird’s nest Fern, Asparagus fern, Selaginella, types of moss for groundcover, Bird nest sansevieria, Pilea microphylla, Pilea muscosa, Pilea cadierei (aluminium plant), baby’s tears, Begonia, Peperomia sps. are used in terrarium. The plants which grow in bright light conditions like Fittonia (nerve plant), button fern, Adiantum (Maidenhair fern), parlor palm, dwarf palm, Dracaena, mini African Violets, Episcia plant, Bromeliads, False aralia, Golden pothos (Money plant), Swedish Ivy, Watermelon pepromia, oxalis, Chlorophytum (spider plant) grow well in terrarium.

Also calthea (peacock plant), Maranta (prayer plant), English ivy, Japanese sweet flag, Reddish and white Alternanthera (Jacobes coat plant), Crotons, lucky bamboo, Aspidistra elatior (Cast-iron Plant), Aralia, Dieffenbachia, Aglonema, Syngonium plant, Philodendrons, Pellionia, Pelargonium sp., Callisia (striped inch plant), Tradescantia etc. are used in terrariums. Cacti and succulents such as Scilla, Sedum, Haworthia, Kalanchoe , Chlorophytum (spider plant), Bird nest sansevieria are also used in terrarium.

The low growing plants such as Ferns, Pilea, Pepromia, Begonia, oxalis, Spider plant, Fittonia, Aralia, Reddish and white alternanthera, selaginella, small pothos (money plant), English ivy, Callisia (striped inch plant), Japanese sweet flag etc. are used for small sized bottles. While Crotons, Dracaena, Diffenbachia, Aglonema, Maranta (prayer plant), Philodendrons, Palms are used as centerpiece plants and they are used for big sized bottles (eg. 25 lit bottle).

Containers –

Containers used for terrariums are made of transparent glass. The glass containers vary in size and shape, it can be any transparent glass container from a small, empty electric bulb to a large 50 lit. glass bottle. The glass containers may be wide mouthed or narrow mouthed having lid on them. The beginners mostly use wide mouthed bottles, large glass containers, fish tanks or fish bowls of size 5 – 10 lit. for making terrariums. When they become expert in making terrariums, they start using the narrow mouthed bottles or glass containers for terrariums. The experts do not only make terrariums but also decorate it with sand, coloured rocks etc. to create a landscape. They also keep coloured insects, lizards etc. in the terrarium.

Tools -

When the terrarium is made in narrow mouthed container, some special tools are used for planting the plants in it. The tools are funnel for pouring brick pieces, charcoal, soil etc. in container, long wires having loop at one end used for planting the plants, a long wire with rubber cork attached at one end for spreading and shaping soil layer, a long stick for positioning the plants, long plastic spoon, scissors, sprayer or oil bottle with tube for spraying water, long forceps, blade, cotton, thread, hammer for making small brick pieces etc.

The potting mixture needed for making terrariums is made up of -

1) gravels or pebbles or brick pieces which acts as drainage layer.

2) river sand which acts as drainage layer.

3) charcoal pieces or sphagnum moss which absorbs impurities and acts as buffer layer.

4) soil mixed with compost (1 part soil + 1 part of cowdung manure or leaf mould).

5) The Fungicide Bavistin – 5 gm Bavistin (1 teaspoon) mixed in 1 liter of water.

6) Pesticide - 5 ml in soil or sand (optional).

Making of terrarium and taking care of terrarium –

1) Select a transparent and wide mouthed, medium sized (5 lit.) glass container with lid for beginning.

2) Select plants which are suitable for the size of container and are having same light requirement.

3) Sketch a design of terrarium on paper to decide how to arrange the plants. The tall plants must be at the centre, so that they will not block the view of small plants.

4) Take the tools and all materials required for potting in terrarium.

5) As terrarium is having very humid condition inside the container, there is a risk of catching fungal infection. So all the material must be sterilized first. For sterilization take the glass container and wash it with soap and hot water and clean and air dry it.

6) Dip all the pebbles / gravels / brick pieces and charcoal pieces in fungicide mixture (5 gm or 1 teaspoon Bavistin mixed in 1 liter of water) for sterilization. Also add 5 to 10 ml of fungicide in sand and in mixture of soil and compost (1:1) and mix it well so that it will spread in all the sand and soil. If you don’t have fungicide, then take a pressure cooker and put all the pebbles / gravels / brick pieces and charcoal pieces along with sand and soil + compost mixture in separate vessels and cook it on steam of pressure cooker to sterilize it.

7) If you want to add pesticide, then add about 5 ml of pesticide each in sand and in soil + compost mixture and mix it well. If you want to put some insects, animals in terrarium then do not use pesticide.

8) Keep the funnel on narrow mouth of container for filling it. The wide mouthed container can be filled with hands, but using funnel keeps the sides of container clean. So use funnel to keep container clean. If you don’t have the funnel then make one using cardboard paper or thin plastic sheet and use it.

9) Add the pebbles / gravels / brick pieces in container through funnel. Then remove funnel and arrange it using rubber cork wire. This layer must be at least 1 inch in size.

10) Then fill the sand through funnel and arrange it using rubber cork wire. Brick pieces along with sand layer should be about 1 to 2 inches in size or more than that.

11) Then add Charcoal pieces or sphagnum moss through funnel and arrange it using rubber cork. This layer should be about 1 inch or more than that.

12) Then add soil + compost (1:1) mixture through funnel. Arrange this layer using rubber cork wire. This layer can be of several inches according to the size of container. Take care that this layer should be about 1/3^rd part of container. This layer should not exceed ½ part of container.

13) Now take the largest plant out of it’s pot and gently brush the soil of it’s roots. Separate the stems of plant if the plant is having more than one stems eg. Parlor palm. If the foliage of the plant is too large, then prune it using scissors, so that plant will be fitted in that container. Remove dry leaves if there are any.

14) Make a hole in the soil using long stick. Take plant and make the ball of roots and place it on a loop of wire. Hold the upper side of plant in one hand and by other hand insert the wire loop in the container to place the plant. Then with the long stick or forceps insert and erect that plant in hole carefully and remove wire loop. Use rubber cork to cover the roots with soil in such a manner that plant will be planted firmly.

15) Then take other small sized plant and plant it with same manner. The smallest plant should be planted at last.

16) Keep the decorative material in the container using long forceps.

17) Tie cotton on one end of long flexible wire with thread and make it wet with water. For cleaning the dirt on walls of terrarium, insert that wet cotton ball in container and swab the terrarium walls with it.

18) Then take sprayer and gently spray the water on the wall of container, so that the soil will be moistened lightly. Do not spray on foliage.

19) Then just keep that container open in shade for one or two days. Observe the terrarium carefully in this period. If the container is soggy then let the extra moisture vapourise and let the foliage dry and let only a thin layer of vapour remains on wall of container, then cover the container tightly.

20) Do not keep the container in direct sunlight, as the plants will burn by the heat created inside by the glass container. Also too much shade will affect plant growth and colouration of foliage. Always keep the container in indirect light. Filtered sunlight from curtains will do. Bright, indirect, dappled light is good for keeping terrarium. Keep changing the direction of terrarium so that all plants in terrarium will get sufficient light.

21) Always keep outer side of terrarium clean as it is only source of light for the inside plants.

22) If there is fungal infection in terrarium, open the lid, cut the infected part with blade attached to the wire, remove it and add small amount of fungicide and cover the container. Add small amount of fungicide once in a year in the terrarium.

23) If the plants are infested with pests, then open the cover, cut infested part with blade attached to a wire, remove it and add the pesticide in small amount and cover it. As terrarium is closed, there is no need of adding pesticide every year after once it is used at start.

24) Once the terrarium gets well established it doesn’t need water for several months. If the container wall remains dry, instead of thin layer of vapour, then water is less. Then spray little water on wall of container as there is no drainage hole. Then cover it.

25) Add small amount of compost if necessary in a year. Do not fertilize plants in terrarium. As chemical fertilizer might become harmful for the inside plants if added in large quantity or the plants will overgrow in that container.

26) If the plants will grow more, then open the lid, prune the plants, spray water if necessary and cover it again.

After taking all this care a well established terrarium will become ready to add a beauty in surroundings.

Note – Open terrariums are also made in the same manner, but they do not have cover on it. They are having open glass containers with open air circulation in which plants are planted. So all the plants used for closed terrarium are also used in open terrarium along with different types of cactus and succulents in addition. Dish gardens is also a type of open terrarium and they are made in shallow dish container without any drainage hole. Dish gardens are mainly used for growing cactus and succulents. In dish garden only pebbles and sand are used for potting layer in which cactus and succulent plants are grown. As open terrariums and dish gardens do not have cover, it’s light requirements are different and it can be placed in sunlight. Also it can be watered frequently, according to it’s need, as it is having open air circulation. But care must be taken that water should not be lodged at the bottom of container otherwise cactus will rot in it. Dish garden and open terrariums both are based on different concepts other than that of closed terrariums. So closed and open terrariums and dish gardens must not be confused with each other and grown in different environments as per their own requirement.

टेरॅरियम - काचपात्रातला बगिचा

टेरॅरियम म्हणजे बरणीतला बगिचा किंवा बंदिस्त काचपात्रातील वाढवलेली झाडे.

लंडनमधील एक आरोग्यचिकित्सक डॉ. नॅथनील वॉर्ड यांच्या हातून अपघातानेच या काचपात्रातील बगिचाचा शोध लावला गेला. डॉ. वॉर्ड यांच्या परसबागेत नेच्यांची खडकबाग (रॉकरी) होती, पण प्रदूषित हवेमुळे ते नेचे मरत होते. डॉ. वॉर्ड फुलपाखरं आणि त्यांचे कोष यांचा अभ्यास करत होते आणि एकदा प्रयोग करतांना त्यांनी थोड्या ओल्या मातीसकट एक फुलपाखराचा कोष, एका काचेच्या बंदिस्त बरणीमध्ये ठेवला. त्यांनी त्याचे नियमित निरिक्षण केले आणि त्यांना आढळून आले, की काही दिवसांनी त्या मातीतून एक नेचा आणि एक गवताचे रोपटे उगवले होते. त्यावेळी त्यांच्या परसबागेतील अनेक झाडे प्रदूषणमुळे मरत असतांना, ही बंदिस्त अवस्थेतली झाडे मात्र चांगलीच तरारली होती. त्यानंतर त्यांनी बंदिस्त काचपात्रांमधल्या नेच्यांवर अनेक यशस्वी प्रयोग केले आणि ते नेचे वाढवले. ही बंदिस्त काचपात्रे नंतर चांगलीच लोकप्रिय झाली आणि वॉर्डियन केसेस म्हणून ओळखली जाऊ लागली, हेच ते पहिले टेरॅरियम म्हणजेच काचपात्रातली बाग.

काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्याचे स्वतःचे असे एक स्वयंपूर्ण वातावरण असते. नीट जम बसलेल्या काचपात्रातल्या बगिचाला फक्त रोजच्या अप्रत्यक्ष सूर्यप्रकाशाची (उजेडाची / छायाप्रकाशाची) आवश्यकता असते. त्याला खूप काळापर्यंत पाण्याचीही आवश्यकता नसते. झाडांच्या प्रकाशसंश्लेषण क्रियेत निर्माण झालेला प्राणवायू (ऑक्सिजन) हा त्यांच्या श्वसनप्रक्रियेत शोषला जातो आणि श्वसनप्रक्रियेत निर्माण झालेला कर्बद्विप्राणिल वायू (कार्बन डायऑक्साइड) हा झाडांच्या प्रकाशसंश्लेषण क्रियेत वापरला जातो. त्याचप्रमाणे पानातून बाहेर पडणारी पाण्याची वाफ आणि मातीतील पाण्याची तयार होणारी वाफ काचपात्राच्या भिंतींवर व छतावर साचते व थंड होते. हे साचून थंड झालेले पाणी खाली ओघळते आणि पुन्हा माती ओली होते. ही एक सतत चालणारी साखळी पद्धतीची पुनरावर्ती क्रिया आहे. जोपर्यंत पात्राचे तोंड बंद आहे, तोपर्यंत ही क्रिया महिनोंमहिने चालूच राहते. श्वसन व प्रकाशसंश्लेषण क्रियेत निर्माण होणार्‍या पाणी, प्राणवायू आणि कर्बद्विप्राणिल वायूच्या पुनर्वापराच्या तत्वावर आधारलेला हा काचपात्रातला बंदिस्त बगिचा म्हणजे जणू काही पृथ्वीची छोटी प्रतिकृतीच असतो.

आता काचपात्रातला बगिचा तयार करण्यासाठी कोणत्या प्रकारची झाडे आणि काचपात्रे, इतर साहित्य आणि उपकरणे आवश्यक आहेत, ते पाहू -

काचपात्रातल्या बगिचासाठी वापरली जाणारी झाडे -

हवेतली आर्द्रता आवडणारी झाडे किंवा सावलीत (अर्धवट छायाप्रकाशात) वाढणारी झाडे, टांगत्या कुंड्यांमधली झाडे, आकर्षक विविधरंगी पानांची झाडे, मांसल, जाड, पण रसदार खोडाची झाडे (सक्युलंट), जमिनीलगत वाढणारी झाडे इत्यादी झाडे काचपात्रातल्या बगिचासाठी वापरली जातात. कमी ते मध्यम प्रकाशात (उजेडात / छायाप्रकाशात) वाढणारी झाडे उदा. नेचे (फर्न), बर्ड्‌स नेस्ट फर्न, अ‍ॅस्परॅगस फर्न, सिलॅजिनेला, भू-आवरणासारखे वाढणारे मॉसचे प्रकार, बर्ड नेस्ट सॅन्सिव्हिएरिआ, पिलिआ (पायलिआ) मायक्रोफायला, पिलिआ (पायलिआ) मुस्कोसा (मस्कोसा), पिलिआ (पायलिआ) कॅडीएरी उर्फ अ‍ॅल्युमिनिअम प्लांट, बेबीज टीअर्स उर्फ बाळाचे अश्रू, बिगोनिआ, पेप्रोमिआच्या विविध प्रजाती ही झाडे काचपात्रातल्या बगिचासाठी वापरली जातात. तसेच भरपूर प्रकाशात (उजेडात / छायाप्रकाशात) चांगली वाढणारी फिटोनिया (नर्व्ह प्लांट), बटन नेचा (बटन फर्न), अ‍ॅडीअ‍ॅंटम (मेडनहेअर फर्न), पार्लर पाम, बुटके वाढणारे पाम, ड्रॅसीना, मिनी आफ्रीकन व्हायोलेट्‌स, एपिसिया प्लांट, ब्रोमेलियाचे प्रकार (ब्रोमेलियाड्‌स), फॉल्स अरॅलिआ, गोल्डन मनी प्लांट (गोल्डन पोथॉज), स्वीडीश आयव्ही, वॉटरमेलॉन पेप्रोमिआ, ऑक्झॅलिस, क्लोरोफायटम (स्पायडर प्लांट) इत्यादी झाडेही काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्यात उत्तम वाढतात.

त्याचप्रमाणे कॅल्थिआ (पिकॉक प्लांट), मरांटा (प्रेअर प्लांट), इंग्लिश आयव्ही, जॅपॅनीज स्वीट फ्लॅग, अल्टर्नन्थेराच्या लाल आणि पांढर्‍या रंगाच्या प्रजाती (उदा. जॅकोब्‍ज कोट प्लांट), क्रोटन्स, लकी बांबू, अ‍ॅस्पिडिस्ट्रा इलॅटिऑर (कास्ट - आयर्न प्लांट), अरॅलिआ, डिफेनबॅकीया, अ‍ॅग्लोनिमा, सिंगोनियम प्लांट, फिलोडेन्ड्रॉन्स, पेलिओनिआ, पेलारगोनिअम (पिलारगोनिअम) प्रजाती, कॅलिसिआ (स्ट्राइप्ड इंच प्लांट), ट्रेड्‌स्कॅन्शिआ इत्यादी झाडे काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्यासाठी वापरली जातात. तसेच कॅक्टस व मांसल, जाड, पण रसदार खोडाची झाडे (सक्युलंट) या दोन प्रकारांमधली सिला (स्किला), सेडम, हॅवॉर्थिया, कॅलन्कोई (कॅलन्चोई), क्लोरोफायटम (स्पायडर प्लांट), बर्ड नेस्ट सॅन्सिव्हिएरिआ ही झाडे काचपात्रातल्या बगिचासाठी वापरली जातात.

जमिनीलगत वाढणारी किंवा कमी उंच वाढणारी झाडे उदा. नेचे (फर्न), पिलिआ (पायलिआ), पेप्रोमिआ, बिगोनिआ, ऑक्झॅलिस, स्पायडर प्लांट, फिटोनिया, अरॅलिआ, अल्टर्नन्थेराच्या लाल आणि पांढर्‍या रंगाच्या प्रजाती, सिलॅजिनेला, छोटा मनी प्लांट, इंग्लिश आयव्ही, कॅलिसिआ (स्ट्राइप्ड इंच प्लांट), जॅपॅनीज स्वीट फ्लॅग, इत्यादी झाडे छोट्या आकाराच्या काचपात्रांसाठी वापरली जातात. तर क्रोटन्स, ड्रॅसीना, डिफेनबॅकीया, अ‍ॅग्लोनिमा, मरांटा (प्रेअर प्लांट), फिलोडेन्ड्रॉन्स, पामचे प्रकार इत्यादी झाडे केंद्रवस्तू (सेंटरपीस) म्हणून मोठ्या आकाराच्या काचपात्रांमध्ये (उदा. २५ लिटरची बरणी) वापरली जातात.

काचपात्रे -

काचपात्रातल्या बगिचासाठी वापरली जाणारी पात्रे पारदर्शक काचेची बनलेली असतात. ही काचपात्रे भिन्न आकाराची असतात, हे पात्र म्हणजे एखाद्या छोट्या विजेच्या बल्बपासून ते एखाद्या मोठ्या ५० लिटर आकाराच्या काचेच्या बरणीसारखे कोणतेही पारदर्शक काचपात्र असू शकते. ही पात्रं रूंद तोंडाची किंवा अरूंद तोंडाची पण झाकण असलेली असतात. नवखे लोक काचपात्रातला बगिचा तयार करण्यासाठी बहुधा रूंद तोंडाच्या बरण्या, मोठी काचपात्रे, मत्स्यालयाची टाकी (फिश टॅंक) किंवा ५ -१० लिटरचे मत्स्यपात्र / हंडी (फिश बाऊल) वापरतात. जेव्हा ते काचपात्रातला बगिचा बनवण्यात निपुण होतात, तेव्हा ते त्यासाठी अरूंद तोंडाच्या काचेच्या बरण्या / काचपात्रे वापरायला सुरूवात करतात. तज्ज्ञ लोक फक्त काचपात्रातला बगिचाच बनवत नाहीत, तर त्याला वाळू, रंगीत दगड इत्यादी वस्तूंनी सजवून भूदृश्य (लॅंडस्केप) तयार करतात. तसेच ते त्या बगिचात रंगीत कीटक, सरडे इत्यादीही ठेवतात.

उपकरणे -

जेव्हा अरूंद तोंडाच्या पात्रात काचपात्रातला बगिचा बनवला जातो, तेव्हा त्यात झाडे लावण्यासाठी काही विशेष उपकरणे वापरली जातात. ही उपकरणे म्हणजे नरसाळं (फनेल) जे विटांचे तुकडे, कोळशाचे तुकडे, माती इत्यादी पात्रात ओतण्यासाठी वापरलं जातं, लांब तारेच्या एका बाजूला तयार केलेला फासा (लूप) जो झाडं लावण्यासाठी वापरला जातो, लांब तारेच्या एका बाजूला जोडलेले रबराचे बूच जे माती पाहिजे त्या आकारात पसरवण्यासाठी वापरले जाते, झाडांची जागा निश्चित करण्यासाठी लांब काठी, लांब प्लॅस्टीकचा चमचा, कात्री, पाणी फवारण्यासाठी स्प्रेयर किंवा लांब नळीची तेलाची बाटली, लांब चिमटा (फोरसेप), ब्लेड, कापूस, दोरा, विटांचे तुकडे करण्यासाठी हातोडी इत्यादी.

झाडं लावण्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेले मातीचे मिश्रण पुढील घटक वापरून तयार केले जाते -

१) दगड किंवा नदीतले गोटे किंवा विटांचे तुकडे - ह्याचा पाण्याचा निचरा करणारा थर म्हणून वापर होतो.

२) नदीतली वाळू - पाण्याचा निचरा करण्यासाठी वापरली जाते.

३) कोळशाचे तुकडे किंवा स्फॅग्नम मॉस - ह्याचा थर अशुद्धी शोषून घेतो आणि रोधक थर (बफर) म्हणून काम करतो.

४) कंपोस्ट मिश्रित माती (१ भाग माती + १ भाग शेणखत किंवा कुजलेल्या पानांचे खत).

५) बुरशीनाशक "बाविस्टीन" - ५ ग्रॅम बाविस्टीन (१ टीस्पून) पावडर घेऊन १ लीटर पाण्यात मिसळलेले.

६) कीटकनाशक - ५ मि.ली. द्रावण माती किंवा वाळूत मिसळावे. (ऐच्छिक).

काचपात्रातला बगिचा (टेरॅरियम) तयार करण्याची कृती व त्याचे व्यवस्थापन -

१) सुरूवातीला एक मोठ्या तोंडाचे, मध्यम आकाराचे (५ लिटर), झाकणासहित असलेले पारदर्शक काचपात्र निवडावे.

२) काचपात्रात सहज मावतील अशा आकाराची व ज्यांना सारख्या तीव्रतेचा प्रकाश लागतो अशीच झाडे निवडावीत.

३) काचपात्रात कशा प्रकारे झाडे लावायची आहेत, हे ठरवून त्याप्रमाणे त्याचे कागदावर आरेखन तयार करावे. उंच झाडे मध्यभागी लावावीत, त्यामुळे लहान झाडे दिसण्यात बाधा येणार नाही.

४) काचपात्रात झाडे लावण्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेली उपकरणे व इतर साहित्य घ्यावे.

५) काचपात्राच्या बगिच्यामध्ये खूप आर्द्र स्थिती निर्माण होत असल्याने, त्याला बुरशी लागण्याचा धोका संभवतो. म्हणून बगिच्यासाठी लागणारे सर्व साहित्य आधी निर्जंतुक करून घ्यावे. काचपात्राच्या निर्जंतुकीकरणासाठी काचपात्र साबण व गरम पाण्याने धुवून स्वच्छ करावे व हवेत वाळू द्यावे.

६) निर्जंतुकीकरणासाठी सर्व दगड / नदीतले गोटे / विटांचे तुकडे आणि कोळशाचे तुकडे बुरशीनाशकाच्या मिश्रणात (५ ग्रॅम किंवा १ टीस्पून बाविस्टीन पावडर घेऊन १ लीटर पाण्यात मिसळलेले) बुडवून घ्यावेत. तसेच प्रत्येकी ५ ते १० मि.ली. बुरशीनाशकाचे मिश्रण घेऊन ते वाळूमध्ये आणि माती व कंपोस्ट (१:१) यांच्या मिश्रणामध्ये घालावे आणि ते नीट मिसळून घ्यावे म्हणजे ते वाळूत आणि खतमातीच्या मिश्रणात सगळीकडे सारखे पसरले जाईल. जर बुरशीनाशक उपलब्ध नसेल, तर सरळ प्रेशर कूकर घेऊन त्यात दगड / गोटे / विटांचे तुकडे आणि कोळशाचे तुकडे, वाळू व खत-मातीचे मिश्रण हे वेगवेगळ्या भांड्यात ठेवून, वाफेवरती वाफवून निर्जंतुक करून घ्यावे.

७) जर तुम्हांला कीटकनाशक वापरायचे असेल, तर वाळू आणि खत-मातीच्या मिश्रणात प्रत्येकी ५ मि.ली. कीटकनाशकाचे द्रावण घालून ते वाळू व मातीत नीट मिसळून घ्यावे. जर तुम्हांला काचपात्राच्या बगिच्यात कीटक किंवा प्राणी ठेवायचे असतील, तर कीटकनाशक वापरू नये.

८) काचपात्रात मातीचे मिश्रण भरण्यासाठी त्याच्या अरूंद तोंडावर नरसाळे (फनेल) ठेवावे. रूंद तोंडाच्या काचपात्रात हाताने हे मिश्रण भरता येते, पण नरसाळे (फनेल) वापरल्याने काचपात्राच्या भिंती स्वच्छ राहतात. म्हणून काचपात्र स्वच्छ राहण्यासाठी नरसाळे (फनेल) वापरावे. जर नरसाळे (फनेल) उपलब्ध नसेल, तर कार्डबोर्ड पेपर किंवा पातळ प्लॅस्टीकचा कागद वापरून ते तयार करावे आणि वापरावे.

९) नरसाळ्यातून दगड / गोटे / विटांचे तुकडे काचपात्रात सोडावेत. मग नरसाळे काढून, तारेला लावलेले रबरी बूच आत घालावे व दगड / गोटे /विटांचे तुकडे त्याने हवे तसे रचून घ्यावेत. हा थर कमीत कमी १ इंच उंचीचा तरी असावा.

१०) नंतर नरसाळ्यातून वाळू ओतून ती काचपात्रात भरावी आणि रबरी बूचाने सगळीकडे पसरवून घ्यावी. आधीचा विटांच्या तुकड्यांचा थर आणि वाळू असे दोन्ही मिळून सुमारे १ ते २ इंच उंचीचा किंवा त्यापेक्षा जास्त उंचीचा थर तयार करावा.

११) त्यानंतर नरसाळ्यातून कोळशाचे तुकडे किंवा स्फॅग्नम मॉस घालावे व रबरी बूचाने ते सगळीकडे पसरवून घ्यावे. हा थर सुद्धा सुमारे १ इंच उंचीचा किंवा त्यापेक्षा जास्त उंच असावा.

१२) त्यानंतर नरसाळ्यातून माती व खताचे मिश्रण (१ भाग माती : १ भाग शेणखत) काचपात्रात घालावे. रबरी बूचाने हा थर हवा तसा पसरवून घ्यावा. हा थर काचपात्राच्या उंचीच्या प्रमाणात अनेक इंच उंचीचा असू शकतो. हा थर सुमारे काचपात्राच्या १/३ (एक तृतीयांश) भागाइतका तरी असावा. मात्र हा थर काचपात्राच्या १/२ (अर्ध्या) भागापेक्षा जास्त असू नये.

१३) आता सगळ्यात मोठे असलेले झाड त्याच्या कुंडीच्या बाहेर काढावे आणि हळूवारपणे त्याच्या मुळांवरची माती काढून टाकावी. झाडाला एकापेक्षा जास्त खोडे असतील, तर ती वेगळी करावी. उदा. पार्लर पाम. झाडांच्या पानांचा पसारा खूप मोठा किंवा जास्त पसरट असेल, तर पाने कात्रीने कापून घ्यावीत, म्हणजे ते झाड काचपात्रात नीट मावू शकेल. झाडाला वाळकी पाने असतील, तर ती काढून टाकावीत.

१४) लांब काठी वापरून मातीत छिद्र तयार करावे. झाड हातात घेऊन त्याची मुळे गोलाकार गुंडाळून घ्यावी आणि तारेच्या फाशावर (लूपवर) ठेवावी. झाड लावण्यासाठी, झाडाचा शेंडा एका हाताने धरून दुसर्‍या हाताने तो तारेचा फासा काचपात्रात सरकवावा. त्यानंतर लांब काठी किंवा चिमटा (फोरसेप) वापरून ते झाड त्या छिद्रात काळजीपूर्वक सरळ उभे करावे आणि फाशाची तार बाहेर काढून घ्यावी. झाड मातीत नीट रोवले जाईल अशा प्रकारे रबरी बूचाच्या सहाय्याने मुळांवर माती घालावी.

१५) त्यानंतर दुसरे लहान आकाराचे झाड घेऊन ते काचपात्रात अशाच प्रकारे लावावे. सर्वात कमी उंचीचे झाड अगदी शेवटी लावावे.

१६) चिमटा वापरून (फोरसेप) सजावटीचे साहित्य काचपात्रात ठेवावे.

१७) एका सहजपणे वाकणार्‍या तारेच्या टोकाला दोर्‍याने कापूस बांधून घ्यावा आणि तो पाण्याने ओला करून घ्यावा. काचपात्राच्या भिंतीवरची घाण काढण्यासाठी हा कापसाचा ओला बोळा पात्रात घालून त्याने पात्राच्या भिंती पुसून घ्याव्या.

१८) त्यानंतर स्प्रेयर घेऊन त्याने हळूवारपणे काचपात्राच्या भिंतींवर पाणी फवारावे, म्हणजे माती थोडी ओली होईल. झाडांच्या पानांवर मात्र पाणी फवारू नये.

१९) त्यानंतर ते काचपात्र एकदोन दिवस सावलीमध्ये उघडेच ठेवावे. या काळात काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्याचे नीट निरिक्षण करावे. जर काचपात्राच्या भिंती व आतील भाग पाण्याने थबथबलेला असेल, तर जास्तीच्या पाण्याची वाफ होऊ द्यावी आणि पाने कोरडी होऊ द्यावी आणि जेव्हा काचपात्राच्या भिंतीवर वाफेचा पातळ थर फक्त दिसायला लागेल, तेव्हाच ते काचपात्र झाकण लावून नीट बंद करून घ्यावे.

२०) काचपात्र थेट सूर्यप्रकाशात ठेवू नये, नाहीतर काचेमुळे आत निर्माण झालेल्या उष्णतेने झाडे जळून जातील. तसंच खूप सावलीही झाडांच्या वाढीवर परिणाम करते आणि त्यांच्या पानांचे रंग बदलतात. काचपात्र नेहमी अप्रत्यक्ष सूर्यप्रकाशात म्हणजेच उजेडात ठेवावे. पडद्यातून गाळून आलेला सूर्यप्रकाश काचपात्रातल्या झाडांना चालतो. भरपूर उजेड किंवा कवडसेयुक्त छायाप्रकाश हा काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्यासाठी उत्तम आहे. काचपात्राची दिशा अधूनमधून बदलत रहावी, म्हणजे काचपात्रातल्या सर्व झाडांना पुरेसा उजेड मिळेल.

२१) काचपात्राची बाहेरची बाजू नेहमी स्वच्छ ठेवावी कारण आतल्या झाडांचा तोच प्रकाशाचा एकमेव स्त्रोत आहे.

२२) जर काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्यात बुरशीची लागण झाली, तर त्याचे झाकण काढावे, आतील लागण झालेला भाग तारेला जोडलेल्या ब्लेडने कापावा व काढून टाकावा आणि बुरशीनाशक टाकून, पात्राचे झाकण लावून घ्यावे. वर्षातून एकदा थोडे बुरशीनाशक काचपात्रात घालावे.

२३) जर काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्याला कीड लागली, तर त्याचे झाकण काढावे, आतील लागण झालेला भाग तारेला जोडलेल्या ब्लेडने कापावा व काढून टाकावा आणि थोडेसे कीटकनाशक टाकून, पात्राचे झाकण लावून घ्यावे. काचपात्र बंदिस्त असल्याने त्यात सुरूवातीला एकदा कीटकनाशक घातल्यावर, दरवर्षी कीटकनाशक घालण्याची आवश्यकता नाही.

२४) एकदा काचपात्रातला बगिचा नीट स्थिरावला की मग पुढचे कित्येक महिने त्याला पाणी घालण्याची गरज नसते. जर काचपात्राच्या भिंतींवर पाण्याच्या वाफेचा पातळ थर न दिसता त्या कोरड्या दिसायला लागल्या तर त्यातले पाणी कमी झालेले असते. मग स्प्रेच्या सहाय्याने काचपात्राच्या भिंतींवर थोडेसेच पाणी फवारावे कारण त्यातल्या पाण्याचा निचरा होण्यासाठी त्याला छिद्र नसते. त्यानंतर पुन्हा काचपात्राचे झाकण लावून घ्यावे.

२५) गरज भासल्यास वर्षातून एकदा काचपात्रात थोडेसे कंपोस्ट खत (शेणखत) घालावे. काचपात्रातल्या झाडांना कधीही रासायनिक खत घालू नये. कारण जास्त प्रमाणात घातले गेल्यास रासायनिक खत झाडांसाठी धोकादायक ठरू शकते किंवा पात्रातील झाडांची खतामुळे अतिरिक्त वाढ होऊ शकते.

२६) काचपात्रातली झाडे जास्त वाढली, तर त्याचे झाकण काढावे, आतील झाडे कापावी, आवश्यकता असल्यास स्प्रेच्या सहाय्याने काचपात्राच्या भिंतींवर थोडेसे पाणी फवारावे आणि पात्राचे झाकण लावून घ्यावे.

अशी संपूर्ण काळजी घेतल्यावर एक नीट सुस्थापित असा काचपात्रातला बगिचा आजूबाजूच्या परिसरातल्या सौंदर्यात भर घालण्यासाठी तयार होतो.

नोंद - खुल्या काचपात्रातले बगिचेही अशाच प्रकारे बनविले जातात, पण त्यावर झाकण लावलेले नसते. त्यांची काचपात्रे उघडी (बिनझाकणाची) असून, त्यात हवा मोकळेपणाने खेळते व त्या खुल्या काचपात्रात झाडे लावलेली असतात. त्यामुळे बंदिस्त काचपात्रात वापरली जाणारी सर्व झाडे खुल्या काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्यात वापरली जातातच, पण त्याचबरोबर विविध प्रकारचे कॅक्टस आणि मांसल, जाड, पण रसदार खोडाची झाडेही (सक्युलंट) यात अधिक वापरली जातात. बशितला बगिचा हाही एक प्रकाराचा खुल्या काचपात्रातलाच बगिचा आहे आणि तो छिद्र नसलेल्या उथळ बशिपात्रात बनविला जातो. बशितले बगिचे हे मुख्यत्वे कॅक्टस आणि मांसल, जाड, पण रसदार खोडाची झाडे (सक्युलंट) वाढविण्याकरता वापरले जातात. बशितल्या बगिच्यात झाडे लावण्यासाठी मिश्रण म्हणून फक्त दगड आणि वाळू वापरली जाते आणि त्यात कॅक्टस आणि मांसल, जाड, पण रसदार खोडाची झाडे (सक्युलंट) वाढवली जातात. खुल्या काचपात्रातले बगिचे आणि बशितले बगिचे यांना झाकण नसल्याने त्यांची प्रकाशाची गरज भिन्न असते आणि म्हणून ते सूर्यप्रकाशात ठेवता येतात. तसेच त्यात हवा मोकळेपणाने खेळत असल्याने, खुल्या बगिच्याला गरजेनुसार वारंवार पाणी घालता येते. पण त्या पात्राच्या खालच्या भागात पाणी साठून राहणार नाही याची काळजी घ्यावी लागते, नाहीतर कॅक्टससारखी झाडे त्यामध्ये कुजून जातील. बंदिस्त काचपात्रातल्या बगिच्याच्या संकल्पनेपेक्षा, खुल्या काचपात्रातले बगिचे आणि बशितले बगिचे हे दोघेही वेगळ्या संकल्पनेवर आधारित आहेत. म्हणूनच बंदिस्त काचपात्रातले बगिचे, खुल्या काचपात्रातले बगिचे आणि बशितले बगिचे यांचा एकमेकांमध्ये गोंधळ न करता ते त्यांच्या स्वतःच्या गरजेप्रमाणे वेगवेगळ्या वातावरणात वाढवले पाहिजेत.

Peacock Rangoli on Paper

In Diwali Rangoli is made at the front side of main door of home. As there is not enough place, most times it gets rubbed off when people used to come and go from that place. So we make small rangoli in one corner of home. This year we used a paper instead of ocher, on which squares were made with pen and fixed that paper on the wooden seat. All the colours which I wanted were available. So I made a drawing of peacock on paper with chalk and started to fill the colours in it. It took about two hours to make and colour the peacock only, so I kept that peacock as it is without filling white rangoli around that peacock. It was my first attempt to make rangoli using different shades of colours in such a manner. So I decided to put the photo of this peacock on blog. Thanks Ajinkya for taking photograph of this rangoli. (I will also write a post about terrarium on blog, but as I am busy in other activities this post will be written after 6th November mostly.)

कागदावरची मोराची रांगोळी

दिवाळीत दाराबाहेर रांगोळी काढली जाते. पण तिथे पुरेशी जागा नसल्याने लोकांची ये जा झाली, की बर्‍याचदा ती रांगोळी पुसली जाते. म्हणून आम्ही घरातल्या एका कोपर्‍यात छोटीशी रांगोळी काढतो. यावर्षी रांगोळीसाठी गेरू वापरण्याऐवजी, पेनाने व्यवस्थित चौकटी आखलेला कागद तयार केला आणि त्या कागदाला ड्रॉईंगच्या पिना लावून तो पाटावर अडकवून टाकला. मला हवे ते रंगही उपलब्ध होते. म्हणून मग खडूने कागदावर मोराचे चित्र काढले आणि त्यात रंग भरायला सुरूवात केली. नुसता मोर काढून तो रंगवायलाच दीडदोन तास लागल्याने मग त्या मोराच्या आजूबाजूला पांढरी रांगोळी न भरता तो मोर तसाच ठेवला. अशा प्रकारे वेगवेगळ्या रंगछटा वापरून रांगोळी काढायचा माझा हा पहिलाच प्रयत्न होता. म्हणून मग ह्या मोराचा फोटो ब्लॉगवर टाकायचे ठरवले. रांगोळीचा फोटो काढल्याबद्दल अजिंक्यचे आभार! (मी टेरॅरियमची पोस्टही ब्लॉगवर टाकणार आहे, पण सध्या इतर कामात व्यस्त असल्याने बहुधा ही पोस्ट ६ नोव्हेंबरनंतरच टाकली जाईल.)

Tuesday, day of 27th September 2011, morning time..... it was about 9' O clock, mother was doing something in gallery. Suddenly she called me and said, that "There is somewhat different infestation on Lily's leaf, just see if it has to be removed." So I went into the gallery and saw, that a leaf of Lily was peeping outside the grill, and beneath it was spread a long spider web.... there were very tiny white spots on that web, some spots were also on the lower side of leaf... those spots were clearly moving. I observed it carefully and said to my mother, "Hey, these are spider babies. These might have been hatched from their eggs just now, because when I removed dried leaves from nearby plant at Seven this morning, I didn't see anything there except the web."

Again I observed that web carefully, but I didn't saw the Female Spider there. The babies were many in number, more than about two hundred fifty to three hundred. The whitish coloured babies were very small in size having the diameter less than 1m.m. The babies were in hurry for going away from that web. In short time these babies would have been vanished from the web. Though hardly two or three babies grow up completely and turned up in their adult stage out of so many babies, other babies die prematurely by being prey for the predator.

I was seeing for first time, the spider babies hatched and in such a large number. So I came taking mobile with me to take their photograph, but the photo was not coming clearly in mobile. My digital camera was not used in many days, so it's cells were not charged. But the other cells having low voltage were just charged, I put it in the camera and saw that the camera was started working. Then I took photos of those babies using macro lens. As those babies were moving very fast the photos are not taken as clearly as I expected, but this biological incident was noted in my camera.

Three days after it at the date of 30th, during afternoon suddenly I looked out of window. A bird of size somewhat larger than sparrow, having green back, and red spot on his head was sat on the branch of tree just in front of me and was eating the bark from wood cavity. I was seeing that bird for first time. This time camera was beside me and it's cells were also charged and already put in the camera. I took up the camera and slowly went near the window. Still that bird was sat there with ease. As I don't have telephoto lens for my camera, I set for the mode of landscape in camera and took photos of that bird from inside of the net of window. Though exposure is quite more in photos, the bird is looking clearly. I was guessing that it must be a Coppersmith Barbet / Crimson-breasted Barbet / Coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala indica) bird, then after searching on internet it was confirmed. This bird is always coming on our Cluster fig tree (Ficus racemosa), but it never came into sight clearly from behind very high branches; only the red spot on its breast was coming into the sight and I was thinking that it might be the Red-vented Bulbul. This is how I got acquainted with Crimson-breasted Barbet who was giving quick glimpses for so many days.

Now every day I see if Crimson-breasted Barbet is seen again, but at the evening of 2nd October when I was looking out of the window as usual, came a bird and sat on Canna flower. That bird was slender and more longer in comparison with sparrow. That bird having down curved bill, blackish-purplish back and yellowish-whitish breast was the Purple-rumped Sunbird (Leptocoma zeylonica) and it was eating the nectar from the Canna flower. Fortunately it's one photo was also captured in my camera. Even Sunbird was also came for first time in our surroundings.

Some years back trees were planted on the sides of roads in our surroundings on the behalf of Municipal Corporation. Those trees are now grown up well. Now the number of birds in our surroundings is increased due to those trees, but now the birds like Crimson-breasted Barbet and Sunbird etc. are also showing up. The Crimson-breasted Barbet is now living in wood cavity on the branch that is just in front of our window. Just now the rainy season is over; the temperature is quite hot. The insects like Butterflies, Dragonflies etc. are looking in much amount. Now I am waiting eagerly if any new bird might show up with all these.

निसर्ग वैभव

मंगळवार, २७ सप्टेंबर २०११ चा दिवस, सकाळची वेळ... बहुधा ९ वाजले होते, आई गॅलरीत काहीतरी करत होती. अचानक तिने मला हाक मारली आणि म्हणाली, की "लिलीच्या पानावर कसलीतरी वेगळीच कीड पडली आहे, ती काढायची का? बघ जरा." म्हणून मी गॅलरीत गेले आणि पाहिलं, तर लिलीचं एक पान ग्रीलच्या बाहेर डोकावत होतं, आणि त्या पानाच्या खालच्या बाजूने एक लांबट कोळ्याचं जाळं पसरलं होतं.... त्या जाळ्यावर बारीक बारीक पांढरे ठिपके दिसत होते, काही ठिपके पानाच्या खालच्या बाजूवरही होते... ते ठिपके चक्क हलत होते. मी ते नीट निरखून पाहिलं आणि आईला म्हणाले, "अगं, ही कोळ्याची पिल्लं आहेत. नुकतीच अंड्यातून बाहेर आलेली असणार, कारण सकाळी सात वाजता मी लिलीच्या शेजारच्या झाडाची वाळकी पानं काढून टाकली, तेव्हा मला तिथे जाळ्याशिवाय काही दिसलं नव्हतं."

मी परत एकदा त्या जाळ्याकडे नीट पाहिलं, पण मला तिथे कोळ्याची मादी दिसली नाही. ती पिल्लं मात्र भरपूर म्हणजे सुमारे अडीचशे ते तीनशेपेक्षाही जास्त होती. पांढरट रंगाची ती पिल्ले आकाराने अगदी लहान म्हणजे १ मि.मी. पेक्षाही कमी व्यासाची होती. त्या जाळ्यावरून दूर जाण्यासाठी त्या पिल्लांची लगबग चालू होती. थोड्याच वेळात ती पिल्ले जाळ्यावरून दिसेनाशी झाली असती. अर्थात इतक्या पिल्लांपैकी जेमतेम दोनतीनच पिल्लांची शेवटी पूर्ण वाढ होऊन त्यांचे प्रौढावस्थेत रूपांतर होते, बाकीची पिल्ले भक्षकांचे भक्ष्य बनून अकालीच मरतात.

अंड्यातून बाहेर पडलेली कोळ्याची पिल्लं आणि तीही इतकी, मी पहिल्यांदाच पाहत होते. म्हणून पिल्लांचा फोटो काढायला मोबाईल घेऊन आले, पण मोबाईलमध्ये नीट फोटो येत नव्हता. माझा डिजीटल कॅमेरा बर्‍याच दिवसांत न वापरल्याने त्याचेही सेल चार्ज केलेले नव्हते. पण कमी व्होल्टेजचे दुसरे सेल नुकतेच चार्ज केलेले होते, ते कॅमेर्‍यात टाकून बघितले आणि कॅमेरा चालू झाला. मग मॅक्रो लेन्स वापरून मी त्या पिल्लांचे फोटो काढले. ती पिल्लं भरभर इकडून तिकडे जात असल्याने फोटो माझ्या अपेक्षेइतके सुस्पष्ट आले नाहीत, पण माझ्या कॅमेर्‍यात ह्या जैविक घटनेची नोंद मात्र झाली.

ह्यानंतर तीनच दिवसांनी ३० तारखेला दुपारी, अचानक माझे लक्ष खिडकीबाहेर गेले. चिमणीपेक्षा थोडा मोठ्या आकाराचा, हिरव्या पाठीचा, डोक्यावर तांबडा ठिपका असलेला एक पक्षी समोरच झाडाच्या फांदीवर बसून झाडाच्या ढोलीतली साल खात होता. तो पक्षी मी पहिल्यांदाच पाहत होते. यावेळी कॅमेरा माझ्या शेजारीच होता आणि त्याचे सेलही चार्ज करून कॅमेर्‍यात टाकलेले होते. मी कॅमेरा घेतला आणि हळूच खिडकीजवळ गेले. अजूनही तो पक्षी तिथे आरामात बसला होता. माझ्या कॅमेर्‍याला टेलिफोटो लेन्स नसल्यामुळे, मी कॅमेर्‍यावर लॅंडस्केपचे सेटींग केले आणि खिडकीच्या जाळीच्या आतून त्या पक्ष्याचे फोटो काढले. फोटोमध्ये एक्स्पोजर जरा जास्तच आले, पण पक्षी स्पष्ट दिसतोय. मला तो तांबट (Megalaima haemacephala indica) पक्षी असावा असे वाटत होते, नंतर इंटरनेटवर शोध घेतल्यावर त्यावर शिक्कामोर्तब झाले. हा पक्षी आमच्या इथे औदुंबराच्या (Ficus racemosa) झाडावर नेहमी येतो, पण खूप उंचावरच्या फांद्यांच्या आडून तो कधीच नीट दिसला नाही; फक्त त्याच्या छातीवरचा लाल ठिपका दिसायचा आणि मग तो कदाचित लाल बुडाचा बुलबुल असेल असा माझा समज व्हायचा. इतके दिवस ओझरते दर्शन देणार्‍या तांबटाशी अशी माझी पहिली ओळख झाली.

आता मी रोजच तांबट पक्षी परत दिसतोय का ते पाहत असते, पण २ ऑक्टोबरला संध्याकाळी असंच खिडकीतून बाहेर पाहत असतांना एक पक्षी उडत आला आणि कर्दळीच्या फुलावर बसला. तो पक्षी आकाराने चिमणीपेक्षा किंचित बारीक आणि जास्त लांबट होता. वाकड्या चोचीचा, काळ्या जांभळ्या पाठीचा आणि पिवळट - पांढरट छातीचा तो पक्षी म्हणजे सनबर्ड (Leptocoma zeylonica) होता आणि तो कर्दळीच्या फुलातला मध खात होता. सुदैवाने त्याचाही एक फोटो मला माझ्या कॅमेर्‍यात घेता आला. सनबर्डही आमच्या इथे प्रथमच आला होता.

काही वर्षांपूर्वी महानगरपालिकेतर्फे आमच्या परिसरातल्या रस्त्यांच्या बाजूला वृक्षारोपण करण्यात आलं होतं. ती झाडं आता चांगली वाढली आहेत. त्या झाडांमुळे आमच्या परिसरातल्या पक्ष्यांची संख्या तर वाढलीच आहे, पण आता तांबट, सनबर्ड यासारखे पक्षीही आम्हांला दर्शन द्यायला लागले आहेत. तांबट पक्ष्याने आता समोरच्या फांदीच्या ढोलीतच मुक्काम ठोकला आहे. नुकताच पावसाळा संपला आहे; वातावरणातला उकाडा वाढला आहे. फुलपाखरं, चतुर इत्यादी कीटक भरपूर प्रमाणात दिसायला लागले आहेत. आता ह्या सगळ्यांबरोबर अजून कोणी नवीन पक्षी दिसतो आहे का, ह्याची मी उत्सुकतेने वाट पाहत आहे.

We had decided to go out for Delhi sight seeing at nine thirty in the morning. But at early morning we changed our plan and decided to go out earlier to see Akshardham temple from it’s outside. We were going there by Metro railway. We went walking to the Metro railway station. There we got plastic coupons as the tickets. That coupon was only for single journey. Return tickets are not sold there. There were simple stairs and escalators for going up. Next to it we had to go through metal detector and scan our bags in scanner. Once it was done, then we had to keep our coupon on the machine placed in front. The small iron doors of the machines get opened for some seconds when coupon is kept on machine. Then taking the coupon with us we had to go in. We had to keep the coupon carefully till the travel was over. There were no benches on platform to sit. But there was not much rush of people.

The Metro railway came in short time. We were thinking that there will not be much rush in train, but we were shocked to see the rush in train. We left that train in the doubt, whether all of us could climb in that train or not. There was rush in train, but people were in no hurry of climbing in or getting down. We were assured after guessing that all of us will climb in the train before the automatic doors of train will get closed. The next train came, there was also rush in that train, but we all climbed in that train neatly. It was announced on the speakers of train that, which will be the next station and doors from which side will be opened for it. Apart from it route of train and names of stations were given on the upper side of the door. The red lights were glimmering on the names of stations which were crossed earlier. The green light was glimmering on the name of station which was coming next. People were getting down very leisurely after the station was coming. Like in Mumbai people were in no hurry of getting down before the station was coming. We got down at Akshardham station.

There was again that machine in front of us while going out of the station. Now we had to keep our coupon on the machine and then put it in the slot of machine after the door was opened and immediately came out of that door. If it was messed up, then it was not possible to come out of the station without the help of railway staff. Finally we all came out of the station. Akshardham temple is near from there. We went there walking and just saw that temple from outside. We heard that it takes about four hours to see the Akshardham temple from inside. It was seeming from outside how magnificent the surroundings of Akshardham temple was. From there we came to the hotel by again traveling in Metro railway and left the hotel taking our luggage with us.

Our bus driver left us in the surroundings of Red Fort near Chandani Chowk. We were much hungry now as we hadn’t done our breakfast at morning. So we went into the hotel. There waiter served the dishes on our table which were ordered by other people, one dish in our order was not served. Finally after talking with the manager all our dishes were served. Too much time was passed in all this fuss. From there we went to the next famous shop to purchase Petha (a sweet) and other sweets. There was much rush in that shop. So it was noon till our shopping was over. We were not wishing to visit Red Fort in hot Sunlight of the afternoon. So some of us saw the Red Fort from outside and returned in the bus. Others went to see the Red Fort from inside.

Our fellow travelers returned after watching Red Fort. Now no one wanted to stroll in Delhi in the hot afternoon. Rajdhani express was departing at four thirty p.m.. So driver told us that he will take a round of back side of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajpath and Bungalows of Ministers and show it to us from the bus. We were agreed. Watching all those places we came near the Bungalow 1, Safdarjung Road. Indira Gandhi was assassinated in the yard of this Bungalow. Now this Bungalow is turned up into the memorial of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. There driver stopped his bus and we went to see that memorial. Police checked our purses after going inside through metal detector. Those who had water bottles, had to keep them outside only.

At inside photos of Indira Gandhi and enlarged photos of news about her were put up on the wall. Apart from that her Sari, Chappals (shoes) and bag which she had worn on the day of her assassination were arranged in one showcase. In the next room kept the sari which was made by the thread spun by Jawaharlal Nehru himself by his hands and was given to Indiraji for her wedding and other utensils used for wedding. Next to it the Awards of Indiraji, her wardrobe, her string of Rudraksha was kept in one room for seeing.

In the next room there was a grand personal library of Rajivji. In the next room photos of Rajiv Gandhi and enlarged photos of news about him were put up on the wall. Along with it Rajivji’s pilot license and the tool box filled with different machines were also kept there. In the next room Rajivaji’s pant which was worn on the day of his assassination and torn into shreds due to bomb blast, and his boots and socks which were in quite good condition were kept in a showcase. Next to it there was bedroom of Rajiv Gandhi. After coming out of it, we saw the path where Indira Gandhi was assassinated. That path was covered with plates of glass. A cloth is placed where Indiraji was fallen down and it is covered by a big transparent glass. All this is worthy of watching at ease. But that day there was much rush, so we didn’t see it properly. And also we had to catch Rajdhani Express, so from there we went in a hurry.

From there we directly reached to the station from our bus. By going through metal detector and by scanning our luggage in scanner we started to climb the bridge. Rajdhani was stopped at platform, when we were reached at the platform. Our coach was much ahead. We searched our coach and climbed in it. After short time train was started. Our return journey was started now. Once again the cycle of late afternoon meal, tea, soup, dinner was started in Rajdhani. All of us were tired, so we slept immediately after the dinner was over. We were waiting for Mumbai after our morning breakfast was over. We were feeling the exhaustion caused by the travel. We got down at Mumbai Central station and sat in the local train to which we were used of. We felt very good. After reaching the home we were realized that the pleasant trip is now over and started our routine life.

सकाळी आम्ही साडेनऊला दिल्ली बघण्याकरता बाहेर पडणार होतो. पण आयत्यावेळी बेत बदलला आणि सकाळी लवकर बाहेर पडून अक्षरधाम मंदिर बाहेरून बघायचे असे ठरले. तिथे आम्ही मेट्रो रेल्वेने जाणार होतो. आम्ही चालत मेट्रोच्या स्टेशनला गेलो. तिथे तिकीट म्हणून प्लॅस्टिकचे कूपन मिळाले. हे कूपन फक्त सिंगल जर्नीसाठी होते. तिथे रिटर्न तिकीट मिळत नव्हते. वरती जाण्यासाठी साधे जिने आणि सरकते जिने होते. पुढे आम्हांला मेटल डिटेक्टरमधून जावे लागणार होते आणि स्कॅनरमधून बॅगा स्कॅन करून घ्याव्या लागणार होत्या. ते झाले, की पुढे असलेल्या यंत्रापुढे आपले कूपन ठेवायचे होते. कूपन ठेवले, की यंत्राची छोटी लोखंडी दारे काही सेकंदापुरती उघडली जातात. त्यातून आम्हांला आमचे कूपन बरोबर घेऊन आत जायचे होते. कूपन प्रवास संपेपर्यंत जपून ठेवायचे होते. प्लॅटफॉर्मवर लोकांना बसायला बेंच नव्हते. पण लोकांची फारशी गर्दी नव्हती.

थोड्याच वेळात मेट्रो ट्रेन आली. ट्रेनला गर्दी नसेल, असा विचार करणारे आम्ही ट्रेनमधली गर्दी बघून हबकलो. ट्रेनमध्ये सगळ्यांना चढायला जमेल की नाही या शंकेने आम्ही ती ट्रेन सोडून दिली. ट्रेनमध्ये गर्दी होती, पण चढण्याउतरण्यासाठी लोकांची घाई नव्हती. ट्रेनचे अ‍ॅटोमॅटीक दरवाजे बंद होईपर्यंत आम्ही सगळे ट्रेनमध्ये चढू शकलो असतो, हा अंदाज आल्यावर आम्ही निर्धास्त झालो. पुढची ट्रेन आली, तिलाही गर्दी होती, पण आम्ही सगळे ट्रेनमध्ये व्यवस्थित चढलो. ट्रेनमध्ये "पुढचे स्टेशन कोणते आहे, त्यासाठी कोणत्या बाजूचे दरवाजे उघडले जातील" याच्या सूचना स्पीकरवरून दिल्या जात होत्या. त्याशिवाय दाराच्या वरच्या बाजूला ट्रेनचा मार्ग आणि स्टेशन्सची नावे दिलेली होती. जी स्टेशन्स पार केली आहेत, त्यांच्या नावावर लाल दिवे लुकलुकत होते. जे पुढचे स्टेशन यायचे आहे त्याच्या नावावर हिरवा दिवा लुकलुकत होता. स्टेशन आल्यावर लोक अगदी सावकाश उतरत होते. मुंबईसारखी स्टेशन येण्याच्या आधीच उतरण्याची घाई लोकांना नव्हती. आम्ही अक्षरधाम स्टेशनला उतरलो.

स्टेशनमधून बाहेर पडतांना पुन्हा समोर यंत्र होते. आता त्या यंत्रावर कूपन ठेवून दार उघडले, की यंत्राच्या खाचेत कूपन आत टाकायचे होते आणि मगच दारातून पटकन बाहेर पडायचे होते. यात जर काही घोटाळा झाला, तर रेल्वेच्या माणसांनी मदत केल्याशिवाय बाहेर पडणे शक्य नव्हते. अखेर एकदाचे सगळे स्टेशनबाहेर आलो. तिथून अक्षरधाम मंदिर जवळच आहे. तिथे चालत गेलो आणि मंदिराचे बाहेरूनच दर्शन घेतले. अक्षरधाम मंदिर आतून बघायला चार तास लागतात असे ऐकले होते. बाहेरूनही मंदिराचा परिसर तेवढा भव्य आहे हे जाणवत होते. तिथून परत आम्ही मेट्रो रेल्वेचा प्रवास करून हॉटेलवर आलो आणि सामान घेऊन हॉटेल सोडले.

आमच्या बस ड्रायव्हरने आम्हांला लाल किल्ल्याच्या परिसरात चांदणीचौकाजवळ सोडले. सकाळी काही नाश्ता न केल्याने आता चांगलीच भूक लागली होती. त्यामुळे आम्ही आमचा मोर्चा एका हॉटेलकडे वळवला. तिथे दुसर्‍या व्यक्तीने मागवलेले पदार्थ वेटरने आमच्या टेबलावर आणून ठेवले, आमच्या ऑर्डरपैकी एक पदार्थ आलाच नाही. शेवटी मॅनेजरशी बोलल्यावर एकदाचे सर्व पदार्थ टेबलावर आले. या गोंधळात बराच वेळ गेला. तिथून मग आमचा मोर्चा पेठा आणि इतर मिठाई खरेदी करण्यासाठी पुढच्या प्रसिद्ध दुकानाकडे वळला. या दुकानात बरीच गर्दी होती. त्यामुळे सर्वांची खरेदी होईपर्यंत सूर्य मध्यान्ही आला होता. आता या भर दुपारच्या उन्हात लाल किल्ला हिंडण्याची आमची इच्छा नव्हती. त्यामुळे लाल किल्ल्याचे बाहेरूनच दर्शन घेऊन आम्ही काहीजण बसमध्ये परत आलो. बाकीचे लाल किल्ला आतून बघायला गेले.

लाल किल्ला बघून आमचे सहप्रवासी परत आले. आता कोणालाच दुपारच्या या उन्हात दिल्लीत हिंडायचं नव्हतं. राजधानी एक्स्प्रेस संध्याकाळी साडेचारला सुटणार होती. मग ड्रायव्हरने आम्हांला राष्ट्रपती भवनाची मागची बाजू, राजपथ, मंत्र्यांचे बंगले हा सगळा परिसर फिरवून बसमधून दाखवतो, म्हणून सांगितले. आम्ही होकार दिला. तो सगळा परिसर पाहत आम्ही १, सफदरजंग रोड या बंगल्यापाशी आलो. याच बंगल्याच्या आवारात इंदिरा गांधींची हत्या झाली होती. आता त्या बंगल्याला इंदिरा गांधी आणि राजीव गांधी यांच्या स्मारकात रुपांतरीत केले आहे. तिथे ड्रायव्हरने बस थांबवली आणि आम्ही ते स्मारक बघायला गेलो. मेटल डिटेक्टरमधून आत गेल्यावर पोलिसांनी आमच्या पर्स चेक केल्या. ज्यांच्याजवळ पाण्याच्या बाटल्या होत्या, त्यांना त्या बाहेरच ठेवाव्या लागल्या.

आतमध्ये इंदिरा गांधींचे फोटो आणि त्यांच्याबद्दलच्या आलेल्या वर्तमानपत्रातल्या बातम्यांचे मोठे केलेले फोटो भिंतीवर लावले होते. त्याशिवाय त्यांची हत्या झाली, त्या दिवशी त्या जी साडी नेसल्या होत्या, ती साडी, चपला, खांद्यावरची झोळी या वस्तू एका शोकेसमध्ये मांडून ठेवल्या होत्या. पुढे एका दालनात इंदिराजींना लग्नाच्या वेळी जवाहरलाल नेहरूंनी स्वतःच्या हाताने सूत कातून त्याची तयार केलेली जी साडी दिलेली होती, ती साडी आणि विवाहविधीच्या वेळी वापरली गेलेली भांडी इत्यादी वस्तू ठेवल्या होत्या. अजून पुढे इंदिराजींना मिळालेले पुरस्कार, त्यांचा वॉर्डरोब, त्यांची रूद्राक्षमाळ हे एका दालनात बघायला ठेवले होते.

पुढच्या दालनात राजीवजींची भलीमोठी वैयक्तिक लायब्ररी होती. त्यापुढच्या दालनात राजीव गांधीचे फोटो आणि त्यांच्याविषयीच्या बातम्यांचे फोटो भिंतीवर लावलेले होते. त्याचबरोबर राजीवजींचे पायलट लायसन्स, त्यांचा विविध यंत्रांनी भरलेला टूल बॉक्स हेही तिथे ठेवलेले होते. पुढे एका दालनात राजीवजींची हत्येच्या वेळी घातलेली आणि बॉम्बस्फोटाने चिंध्या झालेली पॅंट, त्यांचे बर्‍यापैकी शाबूत असलेले बूट आणि मोजे एका शोकेसमध्ये ठेवलेले होते. त्याच्यापुढे राजीव गांधींची बेडरूम होती. तिथून बाहेर आवारात आल्यानंतर इंदिराजींची जिथे हत्या झाली तो मार्ग दिसला. तो मार्ग काचेच्या प्लेट्सनी झाकला होता. जिथे इंदिराजी कोसळल्या होत्या, तिथे एक चादर ठेवून, त्यावर मोठी पारदर्शक काच लावली आहे. हे सारे निवांतपणे बघण्यासारखे आहे. पण त्या दिवशी तिथे खूप गर्दी असल्याने ते नीट बघता आले नाही. आणि आम्हांला राजधानी एक्स्प्रेस पकडायची असल्याने आम्ही तिथून घाईने निघालो.

तिथून आम्ही बसने थेट स्टेशनला गेलो. मेटल डिटेक्टरमधून आत जाऊन आणि सामान स्कॅनरने स्कॅन करून आम्ही पूल चढायला लागलो. आम्ही प्लॅटफॉर्मवर पोहोचलो, तेव्हा राजधानी प्लॅटफॉर्मला लागलेली होती. आमचा डबा खूप पुढे होता. आम्ही आमचा डबा शोधला आणि डब्यात चढलो. थोड्या वेळाने गाडी चालू झाली. आमचा परतीचा प्रवास आता चालू झाला होता. पुन्हा राजधानीमधले संध्याकाळचा नाश्ता, चहा, सूप, जेवण ह्याचे चक्र सुरू झाले. त्या दिवशी मात्र सगळे दमले असल्याने जेवण झाल्यावर लगेच निद्राधीन झाले. सकाळी नाश्ता झाल्यावर आम्हांला मुंबईचे वेध लागले होते. प्रवासाचा शीणही जाणवत होता. मुंबई सेंट्रल स्टेशनला उतरलो आणि आमच्या सवयीच्या असलेल्या लोकल ट्रेनमध्ये बसलो. खूप बरे वाटले. घरी पोहोचल्यावर ही सुखद ट्रीप संपल्याची जाणीव झाली आणि आमचे रूटीन लाईफ चालू झाले.

After taking rest for some time in the room of hotel we went out for dinner. In the restaurant where we had gone for dinner, we had to order it by taking coupons and people were kept waiting for the dinner standing in the queue. But the manager of that restaurant gave us seat at first. At that day five of us ordered Pavbhaji and others ordered the South Indian snacks. Taste of Pavbhaji was quite different, but good. Then all of us ordered lassi. The lassi was served in earthen pots. Lassi was also of good taste. Now we knew the reason, why there was so much rush for taking meals. From there we went into the hotel. We slept after playing cards for some time. We slept calmly in cool air as there was A.C. in the room.

The manager of hotel told us that breakfast will be served at seven o’ clock in the morning. But actually we didn’t got even the tea at eight o’ clock in the morning. The manager who was telling us, that breakfast will come now, sent our breakfast and tea at nine o’ clock in the morning. So we were late for the next travel. From there we went to the Rock Garden. Different idols of humans and animals in different shapes and some nature scenes are created in it by using different materials for it like different rocks, pieces of tiles and pieces of pots made of China clay, pieces of glass bangles etc. Artificial waterfalls made by using streams of water, use of different shapes of trees in the nature scenes, all this adds in the beauty of that garden. But one do not know immediately that where to go exactly next in this garden or how to come out of this garden. Except this there are different types of fishes in fish tank, mirrors reflecting light in different manners, games for children are also there.

From there we went to the Suguna lake in Chandigarh and only saw that lake. There is a facility of boating. But we had to go further, so we hadn’t done the boating. We went further from the lake. In the way at afternoon we went in the Food Plaza for taking lunch. All of us ordered the cutlet because only dishes like snacks and pizza were available there. Two cutlets decorated with too much potato fried chips in the dish were served in front. A cutlet was bigger in size than the ordinary two cutlets. All of us finished their cutlets, but the potato fried chips without salt were not finished soon. After finishing the meal our travel was started in the direction of Kurukshetra.

There is a railway station in the name of Kurukshetra, also there is Kurukshetra University. But the area is too big where the battle between Kauravas and Pandavas was fought actually, and all the spots of that battle are spread at various places in the Kurukshetra district. On most part of this ancient battlefield now the city is built up and on some part fields are spread except the part on which temples are built up. There are big lakes at various places in this plain land of Kurukshetra. This plain place might be selected as battlefield for the provision of drinking water for soldiers and animals in the eighteen akshauhini military. (One akshauhini is 21,870 chariots that is ratha, 21,870 elephants, 65,610 cavalary that is horsemen and 1,09,350 infantry.) In this land some other places of pilgrimage are also there other than the places of battlefield.

We saw first the place of “Jyotisar” where Shrikrishna gave his counsel of Bhagavad-geeta to Arjuna. Here is also a lake, and an ancient Banyan tree. The idol of Shrikrishna giving counsel to Arjuna in a chariot (ratha) is kept here. Also there are small temples of Saraswati, Shiva, Hanuman etc. nearby. At ancient time there was a temple made up of stones. It was destroyed in Muslim invasion. A broken piece of pillar from that temple is kept under the Banyan tree. From there we went to the place named as “Bhishma kund.” Bhishma was thirsty when he was fallen down on bed of arrows and he asked for water. At that time Arjuna hit his arrow in the soil to quench Bhishma’s thirst, and a trickle of water was gushed up at that place. That trickle of water quenched the thirst of Bhishma and a lake was formed there. Now there are small temples on the bank of that lake, there is a idol of Bhishma lying on bed of arrows in one of the temple. Some incidents in the life of Kauravas and Pandavas are formed there by erecting the idols. There is a tall idol of Hanuman nearby. In the shops the parts of battle from the serial of Mahabharata were shown on T.V. at both these places.

From there we went to the place named as “Brahma Sarovar” (a lake). After the battle was over, the after death rituals of the died soldiers had to be performed. There is a legend that for that ritual Shrikrishna created this lake using his Sudarshan Chakra. Here Udhishthira performed after death rituals of all the dead soldiers and freed their souls. This lake is very big. It is people’s belief that all sins of a person are washed up after bathing here. So here is much rush of people on the special occasions of Kumbh mela, Solar eclipse etc. Here the stairs of lake (ghat) and other buildings in the surroundings are built well. After watching Brahma Sarovar we went to Delhi. In the way we had a glimpse of “Kalpana Chawla Planetarium” at Karnal. But we didn’t had the time to see it, so we went further without watching it.

It was night when we reached in Delhi city. The banquet halls in Delhi are now moved out of the Delhi city. It was seeming that at each hall creative decoration and lighting was done. We had decided to see India gate first after we reached in Delhi. There was rush of people even after nine thirty p.m. in the surrounding of India Gate. India gate was shining in the glare of spotlights. After watching India Gate we went towards hotel. In the surroundings of small lanes and alleys the driver was not getting that hotel. The call was not received at hotel’s phone. Finally we got that hotel. We checked into the hotel at eleven thirty p.m.. We were thinking that now the dining facility will not be available, but the manager told us that dinner is ready and he will send it at room. Dinner was simple but good. There was A.C. in the room, so we didn’t feeling hot.

There was a long list of hotel’s rules pasted on the door of the room. “Do not wash clothes in the Bathroom, Do not keep clothes for drying in the room, It is mandatory to note on hotel’s register if any guest arrives on your room, If the guest is sleeping in your room then extra charges will be charged for it, If there is a complaint of trouble causing due to your misbehavior from any other passengers, then you will be expelled out from this hotel,” etc. by reading those rules we were feeling entertained and we also got the idea about Delhi’s work culture. It was late for sleeping, the clock was already stricken to twelve thirty a.m.. But due to A.C. we slept well.

हॉटेलच्या खोलीमध्ये थोडा वेळ विश्रांती घेऊन आम्ही जेवायला बाहेर पडलो. आम्ही ज्या रेस्टॉरंटमध्ये गेलो होतो, तिथे कूपन घेऊन पदार्थ मागवायचे होते आणि जेवणासाठी लोक रांगेत उभे राहून ताटकळत वाट बघत होते. पण तिथल्या मॅनेजरने आम्हांला आधी जेवायला बसवले. त्या दिवशी आम्ही पाचजणांनी पावभाजी मागवली आणि उरलेल्यांनी साऊथ इंडियन स्नॅक्स मागवले. पावभाजीची चव थोडी वेगळी, पण छान होती. नंतर सगळ्यांना लस्सी मागवली. ती लस्सी मातीच्या कुल्हडमधून आली. लस्सीही चांगली होती. तिथे जेवण्यासाठी इतकी गर्दी का होती, याचे कारण आम्हांला आता कळले होते. तिथून हॉटेलवर गेलो. थोडवेळ पत्ते खेळून मग झोपलो. खोलीमध्ये ए.सी. असल्याने थंड हवेत शांत झोपलो.

सकाळी सात वाजेपर्यंत नाश्ता येईल असे तिथल्या मॅनेजरने सांगितले होते. प्रत्यक्षात सकाळी आठ वाजता आम्हांला चहाही मिळाला नव्हता. आत्ता नाश्ता येईल असे सांगणार्‍या मॅनेजरने आम्हांला नऊ वाजता चहा आणि नाश्ता पाठवला. त्यामुळे पुढच्या प्रवासाला उशीर झाला. तिथून आम्ही रॉक गार्डनला गेलो. विविध प्रकारचे दगड, चिनी मातीच्या बरण्यांचे आणि टाईल्सचे तुकडे, काचेच्या बांगड्यांचे तुकडे असं वेगवेगळं साहित्य वापरून तिथे निसर्गदृश्यं आणि प्राण्यांचे आणि माणसांचे विविध आकारातले पुतळे साकारलेले आहेत. त्यातच ठिकठिकाणी वाहते पाणी सोडून निर्माण केलेले कृत्रिम धबधबे, झाडांच्या विविध आकारांचा तिथल्या दृश्यात करून घेतलेला वापर हे त्या गार्डनच्या सौंदर्यात भरच घालतात. मात्र या गार्डनमध्ये पुढे नेमकं कुठे जायचं किंवा बाहेर कसं पडायचं हे पटकन लक्षात येत नाही. याशिवाय मत्स्यालयातले विविध प्रकारचे मासे, विविध प्रकारे प्रकाशाचे परावर्तन होणारे आरसे, लहान मुलांचे खेळ हेही त्या गार्डनमध्ये आहे.

तिथून आम्ही चंदीगडमध्ये असलेल्या सुगुना सरोवरावर गेलो आणि फक्त ते सरोवर बघून आलो. तिथे बोटींगचीही सोय आहे. पण आम्हांला पुढे जायचे असल्याने आम्ही बोटींग केले नाही. लेकवरून आम्ही पुढे निघालो. वाटेत दुपारी जेवण्यासाठी एका फूड प्लाझामध्ये गेलो. तिथे फक्त स्नॅक्स, पिझ्झा असे पदार्थ मिळत असल्याने सगळ्यांनी कटलेट मागवले. बटाट्याच्या भरपूर फ्राईड चिप्सनी सजवलेले दोन कटलेट डिशमधून समोर आले. कटलेट आकाराने नेहमीच्या दोन कटलेटपेक्षाही मोठं होतं. सगळ्यांनी कटलेट संपवले, पण मीठ नसलेल्या बटाट्याच्या फ्राईड चिप्स काही लवकर संपेनात. खाणे झाल्यावर कुरूक्षेत्राच्या दिशेने आमचा प्रवास चालू झाला.

कुरूक्षेत्र या नावाचे रेल्वे स्टेशन आहे, कुरूक्षेत्र युनिव्हर्सिटीही आहे. पण कौरव पांडवांचे प्रत्यक्ष जिथे युद्ध झाले तो सगळा परिसर खूप मोठा आहे आणि युद्धाची सगळी ठिकाणे कुरूक्षेत्र जिल्ह्यात ठिकठिकाणी विखुरलेली आहेत. जिथे मंदिरं उभारलेली आहेत, तो भाग सोडला, तर या प्राचीन युद्धभूमीवर आता शहर उभारले गेले आहे आणि काही भागात शेतजमीन पसरलेली आहे. कुरूक्षेत्राच्या या सपाट भूमीत ठिकठिकाणी मोठी सरोवरे आहेत. अठरा अक्षौहिणी सैन्यातले सैनिक आणि प्राण्यांची प्यायच्या पाण्याची सोय व्हावी, म्हणूनही कदाचित या सपाट जागेची निवड युद्धभूमीकरता झाली असावी. (एक अक्षौहिणी म्हणजे २१,८७० रथ, २१,८७० हत्ती, ६५,६१० अश्वसाद, १,०९,३५० पदाती.) या युद्धभूमीतल्या स्थानांव्यतिरिक्त काही तीर्थस्थळेही या परिसरात आहेत.

"ज्योतिसर" जिथे श्रीकृष्णाने अर्जुनाला भगवद्गीतेचा उपदेश केला, ती जागा आम्ही प्रथम पाहिली. इथेही एक तळं आहे, प्राचीन वटवृक्ष आहे. श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुनाला रथात उपदेश करत असतानांची मूर्ती इथे ठेवली आहे. त्याशिवाय शेजारी सरस्वती, शंकर, हनुमान इत्यादींचीही छोटी मंदिरे आहेत. प्राचीन काळी इथे दगडी मंदिर होते. मुसलमानी आक्रमणात ते नष्ट झाले. या मंदिरातला एका तुटक्या स्तंभाचा तुकडा वडाच्या झाडाखाली ठेवलेला आहे. तिथून आम्ही "भीष्मकुंड" या स्थानी गेलो. भीष्म शरशय्येवर पडले असतांना त्यांना तहान लागली आणि त्यांनी पाणी मागितले. तेव्हा त्यांची तहान भागवण्यासाठी अर्जुनाने जमिनीत बाण मारला आणि त्या जागी पाण्याची धार उसळली. त्या धारेने भीष्मांची तहान भागवली आणि तिथे सरोवर निर्माण झाले. आता त्या तळ्याकाठी छोटी मंदिरे आहेत, त्यातल्या एका मंदिरात भीष्म शरशय्येवर पडले असतांनाची मूर्ती आहे. याशिवाय कौरव-पांडवांच्या जीवनातील काही प्रसंग तिथे मूर्ती उभारून साकार केले आहेत. तिथे थोडे बाजूलाच हनुमानाची एक उंच मूर्ती आहे. या दोन्ही ठिकाणी दुकानांमध्ये महाभारत मालिकेतल्या युद्धाचे भाग टी.व्ही.वर दाखवले जात होते.

तिथून आम्ही "ब्रह्मसरोवर" या ठिकाणी गेलो. युद्ध संपल्यानंतर मृत झालेल्या सर्व योद्ध्यांचे श्राद्धादी विधी करायचे होते. त्यासाठी श्रीकृष्णाने सुदर्शन चक्राने या सरोवराला निर्माण केले अशी आख्यायिका आहे. इथेच युधिष्ठिराने सर्व योद्ध्यांचे श्राद्धविधी करून त्यांना मुक्ती मिळवून दिली. हे सरोवर खूप मोठे आहे. या सरोवरात स्नान केल्यास माणसाची सर्व पापे धुवून निघतात अशी लोकांची श्रद्धा आहे. त्यामुळे कुंभमेळा, सूर्यग्रहण अशा काही पर्वांच्या वेळी इथे लोकांची भरपूर गर्दी उसळते. या सरोवराचे घाट आणि आजूबाजूचा परिसर व्यवस्थित बांधून काढलेला आहे. ब्रह्मसरोवर पाहून आम्ही दिल्लीला निघालो. जातांना वाटेत कर्नालला "कल्पना चावला तारामंडल" दिसले. पण ते बघायला वेळ नसल्याने ते न बघता आम्ही तसेच पुढे निघालो.

आम्ही दिल्ली शहरात पोहोचलो तेव्हा रात्र झाली होती. दिल्लीमधली मंगल कार्यालये आता दिल्ली शहराबाहेर हलवली गेली आहेत. रात्री त्या प्रत्येक ठिकाणी दिव्यांची रोषणाई आणि कल्पक सजावट केलेली दिसत होती. दिल्लीत गेल्यावर आधी आम्ही इंडिया गेट पाहणार होतो. रात्री साडेनऊनंतरही इंडिया गेटच्या परिसरात लोकांची गर्दी होती. इंडिया गेट दिव्यांच्या प्रकाशात उजळून निघाले होते. इंडिया गेट पाहून आम्ही हॉटेलकडे निघालो. अनेक छोट्या गल्ल्यांच्या त्या परिसरात ड्रायव्हरला आमचे हॉटेल सापडेना. हॉटेलच्या फोनवर फोनही लागत नव्हता. अखेर एकदाचे ते हॉटेल सापडले. रात्री साडेअकरा वाजता आम्ही हॉटेलमध्ये चेक इन केले. आता जेवायची सोय होणार नाही, असे वाटले असतांनाच मॅनेजरने जेवण तयार आहे, खोलीवर पाठवतो, म्हणून सांगितले. जेवणही साधे पण चांगले होते. खोलीमध्ये ए.सी. होता, त्यामुळे उकडत नव्हते.

खोलीच्या दरवाज्यावर हॉटेलच्या नियमांची लांबलचक यादी चिकटवलेली होती. "बाथरूममध्ये कपडे धुवू नयेत, खोलीमध्ये कपडे वाळत घालू नयेत, तुमच्या खोलीत पाहुणे आल्यास, हॉटेलच्या रजिस्टरवर त्याची नोंद करणे बंधनकारक आहे, पाहुणे तुमच्या खोलीत झोपणार असल्यास त्याचे अतिरिक्त दर भरावे लागतील, तुमच्या गैरवर्तनाने हॉटेलमधील इतर उतारूंना त्रास होत असल्याची तक्रार आल्यास तुम्हांला हॉटेलबाहेर काढले जाईल." इत्यादी नियम वाचून करमणूक झाली आणि दिल्ली मधल्या वर्क कल्चरची कल्पनही आली. रात्री आम्हांला झोपायला उशीर झाला, साडेबारा वाजून गेले होते. पण ए.सी. मुळे शांत झोप लागली.

Shimla, Kullu, Manali trip – Part 7

At first there is a temple of Shiva in front of Vashishta temple, and both of these temples are built up of wood which is carved. Just ahead at upside there is an old temple of Rama, whose half old part is built up of stones, and the half new part is built up of carved wood. We first paid our visit to Shiva temple and then went into Vashishta temple. The idol of Vashishta is having only moustache but no beard. In the yard of Vashishta temple there is a hot water pool. Separate bathrooms are built up on that pool for men and women. The water coming from the tap of basin is the same water coming from that pool. I washed my hands with that tap water. The water was quite hot. From there we went into the Rama temple situated upside. It’s construction is of ancient time. The idols of Rama, Laxmana and Sita in temple are made up of gold.

We had to peep in the shop while coming down because the vendors were chasing us. Chingu is a kind of blanket. After hearing it, we thought that it will be not of much use in Mumbai, and we came out of that shop. I purchased a sweater for me in one shop. Here we were acknowledged that the good quality shawls made in Himachal are very expensive. All the other material is coming here from outside that is Kashmir. Most of the material which was getting sold from nearby shops was came from Kashmir.

From there we went into the Hidimba (Hadimba) temple. There was very large queue for paying visit to this temple. In the surroundings of Hidimba (Hadimba) temple, a garden is made by planting trees of Pine, Devdara etc.. In the shadow of these trees in the surroundings of this temple, it feels very calm. This temple is also made up of wood. The skulls of animals like deer with their horns are hanged on this temple. There is a wooden threshold nearly two feet high while entering in the sanctum of the temple. There are clean cut large sized footprints as a symbol of Hidimba (Hadimba) in a deep but small cave like part in the sanctum. Also there is a small idol of a Goddess at one side. On the backside of this temple there is a temple of Ghatotkacha – the son of Hidimba (Hadimba) and a temple of Barbarik – the son of Ghatotkacha. After coming out of the temple, we saw small shops at side just like that of in the fair. Here also there was a facility of taking photographs, by wearing Himachali dress or by sitting on black and white mix coloured Yak. Also there was facility of taking photo, by taking big eared white rabbits in hands.

When we departed from there, driver stopped his bus near the club house. From there we had to go in the Manu’s temple. This land got it’s name Manali as it means Manu Aalay – that is home of Manu. Manu temple is situated on a hill having very high slope. The bus do not go there. Rickshaws were going only up to half distance on road, because the road construction was going on there. The driver gave us two options either Manu Temple or Club house. Here we were divided into two groups. Some of us started to go to Manu temple, and others started to go to the Club house. The school was started up near Manu temple. The schools in Himachal do not have Summer vacation, but they have vacation in rainy season. We had to take ticket for going in the Club house. Differently ticket checking was done after we went ahead. There are shops, hotels, gaming zones, boating zones in the Club house. We returned to the bus at decided time, after passing some time in Club house.

From there we went walking into the hotel for lunch. It was a Gujarati hotel. We ordered for Gujarati thali. A notice was put up on the wall of hotel in clean Gujarati language, that “Please do not wash your hands in thali (dish).” After taking lunch we strolled around in the market and took rest sitting in the Vanvihar garden. Then again went walking where our bus was parked. There also a Vanvihar garden was made nearby. There the bird “Monal” which looks like peacock and some other birds were kept in cage. We took photographs of those birds and flowers and went out. The basin of river Vashishta was very near. But we went into the hotel. Though we reached at hotel earlier, we sat at one side waiting for dinner because there was much rush in the dining room for taking dinner, and took our dinner at last. At the next day we had to depart from Manali.

At morning our travel was started after taking lunch. We were going to Chandigarh via Kullu. In the way driver stopped his bus by seeing a board of river rafting. There those people wrote down our names who wanted to do river rafting (four hundred rupees each). Actual place for doing river rafting was at long distance. Our bus went there, behind the vehicle of those people. Eight of us wanted to do river rafting. The plastic dress was given to us, for wearing externally to not to soak in water. Then life jacket and helmet were given to us to wear on it. It’s belt were tightened carefully. And we became ready to do the river rafting. All of us sat on that rubber boat as four of us on the front seat, in middle both of us and the other two on back seat. We only had to hold the rope in the boat tightly with both our hands. Those on the front side had to bent down, only if they got the signal for it at that time. The rafting people were going to row the boat.

At backside sat down one rafting man who was giving the signals for rafting. The other two men brought our boat in water and started to row the boat according to signals by sitting at our external side in the middle part. Whenever any strong current of water was coming in between, it’s water was directly tumbling on our body and we were getting soaked. The water was as cold as snow. The water was surging up again and again and going into the eyes. So for some time at start I closed my eyes tightly. I opened my eyes when the surge of water became less, but now the boat was changing it’s direction continuously. Water was going with force in my left ear when the boat was changing the direction each time. In the way the boat came at one side of stream. The men who were rowing the boat got down in to the water and gave direction to the boat according to the signals given by signalman. Now we were just used to rafting and enjoying it, in that time came the place where we had to get down. The jeep of rafting people and our bus was reached there by the road which was parallel to the river. We had crossed the distance of seven kilometers. Three of us, me and the other two at front were soaked very much. There was a provisional changing room nearby. The video shooting of our rafting was showing in the room which was near to it. Those people were giving us it’s C.D. for two hundred rupees.

We took the C.D. and started our travel. We came into Punjab finishing our travel on smooth and clean roads of Himachal Pradesh. While going to Chandigarh we only stopped in a hotel for taking lunch in the way. We had decided earlier to eat Makke ki (Corn) roti and Saranso ka sag (vegetable of mustard) in this return journey, but now only half of us ordered for simple lunch and the others took lassi. In next travel the driver switched on the A.C. in bus at four o’ clock in afternoon. We were sensing the increased heat in the surroundings after we came to Punjab from Himachal Pradesh. The sky which was looking clear blue in Himachal Pradesh, now in Punjab it was looking smoky and polluted. Then in next travel we only stopped for drinking tea at one place in the evening. There I captured the beautiful scene of sunset in my camera. We didn’t saw anything else in that travel. When Chandigarh came near, the curtains in the bus were tied up. In Chandigarh it is not allowed to keep curtains inside the vehicles. Chandigarh is a city which is cleanly planned and designed. At seven o’ clock in the evening we all came in one and same hotel. Here we had no question of parking of bus, because there is place kept for parking in all the city.
