How to Correct Dry Hair Caused by High Porosity

So I'm thinking my hair suffers from high porosity. Porosity is defined as the ability of the hair's cuticle to retain moisture. The higher the porosity, the harder it is to keep your strands quenched. High porosity is a common problem among those with corkscrew type curls like mine. (Chemical and excessive heat treatments can also result in high porosity due to damaged and raised cuticles) So how do I fix it? I've been doing my research and it led me to this awesome article on cushblog.com about what high porosity means and the do's and dont's of dealing with it. If your hair is constantly dry (especially in winter months) no matter how much you condition it, oil it, or butter it up... you should check it out.

How to Correct Dry Hair Caused by High Porosity

If you suffer from dry hair, it’s because the hair system is not properly hydrated.
Healthy hair typically has 6% moisture. When the hair system becomes dry, it’s typically found in hair that has high porosity.

High porosity hair has raised cuticles that will not hold moisture in the cortex or cellular membrane complex. The twisted, elliptical, corkscrew hair shaft structure for type 4 hair makes it particularly susceptible to raised cuticles (i.e. high porosity) and ultimately breakage at those points where the hair makes a 180-degree bend. If your hair is damaged from excessive flat ironing, coloring or mechanical stress, the problem of dryness gets much worse.

Why is Highly Porose Hair Easily Damaged?

Porous hair systems tend to absorb (sorption) water very quickly in high humidity conditions. It will also allow the water to evaporate (desorption) very quickly in dry conditions like when you are indoors during the winter months. Since we tend to spend the bulk of our time inside during the dry climate conditions water from our hair and skin is constantly evaporating and eventually, they becomes dry.

Is High Porosity Hair Correctable?

High porosity hair does not mean you are confined to eternal hair dryness and breakage. You just have to take extra care in styling your hair as well as know what types of products will work well with your particular hair type. Below, I will discuss some of the solutions to correcting dry hair. But before I do, I want to also mention the fact the low porosity hair can be a problem as well.

Low porosity hair is the reverse of high porosity hair. The cuticle is more tightly closed and although the hair will absorb less water, it will actually hold onto the water a lot longer than highly porose hair. Unfortunately, when the moisture reserve begins to dwindle, it much more difficult to replace it because of the tightly closed cuticle and therein lies the problem. Luckily there is a quick fix to get low porosity hair back on track.

Tip: Low porosity hair dryness is not as prevalent as high porosity hair dryness but is an easy fix nonetheless. Try using a castile soap periodically. The problem is that your hair cuticles are too tightly attached to the hair shaft. The high pH soap will gently raise and open the cuticle, to allow more water and oil into the cortex without doing too much damage.

Now I will discuss the following 4 methods you can use to treat dry hair due to high porosity: Oil/Butters, Humectants, Emulsions, and Silicones

Myth or Truth: Can Oil and Butters Correct Dry Hair?

All About Oils and Butters:

If oil does not have any water in it, how in the world can it be moisturizing?

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the use of oils and butters to treat dry hair. It’s even been suggested that oils and butters should be your first choice as a moisturizer. While this can be true to a certain degree, one huge point was missed. Your hair has to be properly hydrated in order for an oil to “appear” to be moisturizing.

Why aren’t Oils and Butters Good Moisturizers When Used Alone?

Oils and butters do not contain one drop of water. So why do we refer to them as moisturizing when they do not contain water? Oils and Butters are really a collection of essential fatty acids (EFA). Depending on the structure and molecular weight of the EFA, they will either coat the outside of the hair or penetrate the hair cuticle and cellular membrane complex.

Tip: Oils and butters are nothing more than emollients, which are chemical agents that increase your skin and hair’s hydration (water content) by REDUCING evaporation-and NOT ADDING MOISTURE!

So I would have to say inaurguably, that soley using oils and/or butters will moisturize your hair is in fact a myth.

Oils and Butters Dos and Don’ts

Do use Oils and Butter on Hydrated, Healthy, Normal Hair

When oils/butters coat the outside of the hair, they make your hair shiny, soft and to some degree detangled. On the other hand, when they penetrate the hair cuticle they increase your hair’s elasticity and suppleness because they are able to trap in the hair’s natural moisture. When moisture is trapped into the hair, it’s more difficult for your hair to lose moisture due to evaporation in dry climates. The end result is that the hair will feel more moisturized when oil is used but it is not the result of oil bringing moisture to the hair, instead, it is the oil’s ability to aid our hair in using its natural hydration more efficiently.

Don’t use Oils and Butters on Dry Hair

On the flip side, if your hair is dry adding oil will do nothing to moisturize your hair. In fact, it will take longer for dry hair to adsorb moisture if oil has been applied because the oil will act as a sealant and coat the hair. Again, oils and butters only aid in moisture retention when your hair is already properly hydrated.

The Experiment: When your hands are extremely dry, apply your favorite oil or butter to them and see if they feel moisturized. My hypothesis is that they will feel even more dry, which is exactly what will happen when you apply oil to dry hair.

Tip: If you are a “diehard” oil and butter user, make sure to apply them to damp hair. It is also great to apply a light dressing of oil to your ends after you shower.

Super Tip: Use a steamer with a pre-poo to combat hair dryness. This combination will bring both water and oil to the hair system.

I’ve discussed oils and their ability to stop moisture from being absorbed or desorbed from the hair, which makes me think of a similarly acting ingredient regarding absorption and desorption-humectants.

What are Humectants?

Humectants also do not contain any water. However, they have a huge affinity for water. That means they will take moisture from the air, your hair products, or your hair to stay hydrated. When used in hair care products, they will also slow down the evaporation of water from the hair. Again, this is due to water’s affinity/attraction for the humectants as compared to the energy needed for evaporation in dry climate conditions. Glycerin is a typical humectants used in hair products. You have to be careful of using it in high and low humidity conditions. There can be some drawbacks from using high glycerin formulas depending on the dew point.

Myth or Truth: Do Emulsions Reduce Dryness?

So I would have say that it is true that humectants can reduce dry hair-however, it depends on the dew point as stated above.

Let’s Talk Emulsions

What are Emulsions?

In my opinion, the best of both worlds are hair products that are cream or lotion conditioning moisturizers. The technical term is oil in water emulsions. It is both water and oil (hybrid) combined with the help of a conditioning emulsifier. Emulsions are suspended droplets of oil trapped in a water matrix. The oil droplets are incased in an emulsifier and allow the oil/water mixture to not separate. Cream and lotion emulsions are considered moisturizers because they possess water while at the same time being oil.

Emulsion Mechanics and how it works on my hair

The water/oil emulsion can either penetrate the hair cuticle or coat the hair shaft. The end result is that when oil and water penetrate the cuticle, the hair is moisturized because of two mechanisms:

The formula water is hydrating the hair system.
Oils that have penetrated the cuticle act to slow down the evaporation rate of water from the hair.

Tip: Humectants can also be added to the water matrix of the emulsion to improve the moisturizing properties of the product. It stays suspended in the water matrix due to its affinity for water. It also acts to farther slow down the evaporation rate of water from hair.

Truth or Myth: Emulsifier Aid in Reducing Dry Hair?

Yes, the conditioning emulsifier has another function. Due to its positive charge, it will coat and smooth down the cuticle. Thus, it will make it even more difficult for water to evaporate. Remember, your hair negatively charged and is dry because the cuticle is raised. Anything that will coat the hair and smooth the cuticle will translate into more moisture in the hair System. BTMS is a typical fatty acid alcohol emulsifier.

So it’s True, Emulsions are Great at Reducing Hair Dryness.

Tip: Cream and Lotion emulsion products can be added to damp or dry hair. However, I would use caution when applying an emulsion to dripping wet hair. Depending on the oil to emulsifier ratio (for you tech geeks the HLB), the extra water could “break the emulsion” and cause it to separate. Not a big deal if it happens during the application but the product will lose some of its effectiveness.

Tip: Root to tip application of an emulsion-based product is a great way to mechanically smooth down the cuticle. Remember, raised cuticles on the hair structure cause hair dryness. Anything that will cause the cuticle to retract will mean more moisture in the hair system.

Let’s Talk Silicones

Myth or Truth, Does Silicone Reduce Dryness?

Silicone coats the hair also. Why is it considered bad for my hair?

Silicones (aka “Cones”) are some of the best coating compounds on the market. They give your hair incredible shine without weighting down the hair. However, they are too good at coating the hair. It all goes back to moisture in the hair and how to effect its evaporation. What I did not elaborate on earlier in this article is that moisture in our hair actually is in equilibrium with the environment that we are living. In dry conditions, our hair loses moisture via evaporation. In humid conditions, our hair adsorbs moisture. The problem with silicone is that while it will slow down (not completely stop) the evaporation of moisture from hair, it almost completely stops the adsorption of moisture back on to the hair shaft. “Net – Net” your hair becomes drier over time as your hair evaporates moisture without being able to adsorb moisture back into the hair. Remember, hair dryness can lead to breakage.

“Tips for my Cone Junkies:”

1. Make sure your hair is properly hydrated before you use Cones. It is kind of like getting a cold drink of water before a long hot walk. It’s going to be awhile before you get some more water so drink up.

2. Use a SLS or harsh detergent type shampoo to strip the silicone from the hair on a more frequent basis. Only use the SLS shampoo for stripping out the silicone.

3. Follow up with deep condish and consider going without silicone for a while. During this time, focus on hydrating/ moisturizing the hair. You have to find your rhythm on how long to stay on and off silicone. Let your hair guide you in finding the right frequency. The goal is to have properly hydrated hair.

Lastly, Let’s Look at Proteins

Myth or Truth-Do Proteins Moisturize the Hair?

How in the world is protein moisturizing?

Typically, protein is not used in its natural state due to its size. It’s too big to be effective in skin, hair and body products. Most products use hydrolyzed protein, which is not meant to convey any moisturizing properties what so ever.

Just as oils are a collection of essential fatty acids, protein is similar in that it is a collection of amino acids. These amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds to form long protein chains. Hydrolyzation is the process of “cutting up” the protein chain into very specific molecular weight segments of amino acid. All segmentation occurs at the peptide bond and a by-product of breaking a peptide bond is the formation of water. The hydrolyzed protein segments are smaller and from a stereo chemical standpoint, can benefit the hair.

Hydrolyzed protein does two things:

It will strengthen the hair structure
It will repair/coat/patch areas on the hair system that have been damaged. Damaged can be defined as split ends, missing and or RAISED cuticles.

So I would say that it’s a myth-protein does not moisturize the hair.

In closing, preventing hair dryness is all about 1st) properly hydrating the hair and 2^nd) slowing down the evaporation (desorption) process. So to summarize:

If you are going to use an oil or butter. Pre hydrate your hair before using the oil or butter. Think of it as going to a BYOW affair. You have to “bring your own water” to the party in order for an oil to be effective at moisturizing your hair.
If you like to use humectants “spritz” products, then think of them as a “Water Kleptomaniacs” and your hair is benefitting from the stolen goods. Humectants steal water from the air and your hair products to ensure that it stays hydrated. Since humectants are also coating the hair shaft, the hair will also be hydrated.
Emulsions that have humectants are the best of all worlds. You get benefits of moisture and oil in one product. They should be applied to dry or moist hair.
Silicones are way too much of a good thing. Your hair is not given the chance to adequately re-hydrate itself. Over time, your hair becomes drier because moisture evaporates faster than it can adsorb water.
Strip the silicone from your hair periodically and re hydrate/ deep condishing.Protein is the repairman. It coats, smoothes, and patches damaged areas of the hair. If you can patch those areas where the cortex is exposed, your hair will stay hydrated longer. You will also delay/lessen/prevent the possibility of hair breakage!
Low porosity hair can use a higher pH shampoo. I am not saying going back to SLS. Castile soap is good middle ground for cleansing the hair. Follow up with a deep condishing!

So from this article, I have learned that water, humectants, and protein should be best buddies with my highly porous hair. Only after these items are used will my hair be receptive to my many concoctions of oils and butters. Looks like I'll be blowing the dust off of my old bottle of glycerin (a humectant) and perhaps shortening the length of time between protein treatments (at least during the winter). My only question is...for those who would like to keep the hair stretched or straightened, how should they deal with this prognosis? Obviously water and glycerin would be a no no for consistently applying moisture. Looks like my research shall continue...

A thyroid condition and a relaxer are not a good combination at all. Today, I am happy with my much stronger hair and mix of type 3C to type 4 a/b/and c hair. As a "natural" I am not into debating what makes one natural. I will front lace, weave, and wig it up as I please. Besides, I live in a hard water area. My hair needs a break from daily watering...and my hair answers to no one except me! Happy Natural Hair Growing!

Product Review: Raspberry Rhassoul Deep Condish and First Giveaway!

It’s that time of year again. Winter is here. And that means we have to take those little extra steps to protect our manes from the harsh blustery cold and dry weather. In years past, I have posted my favorite creams and butters that help to maintain moisture in the winter months. While those faves still hold true…I have fallen in love with something new.

Anita Grant’s Raspberry Rhassoul Deep Condish!

I have never met a deep conditioner that truly knocked my socks off (Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner is the closest thing to it), that is until now. Rhassoul Deep Condish is a clay based treatment that comes in the form of 30 gram cubes (3 in a package).

UK based Anita Grant started cultivating her environmentally-conscious line out of her kitchen in 2005 and has since gained a worldwide curly hair cult following. I must say , after trying the chocalatey Rhassoul, I am itching to find out what the rest of her line has to offer.

Let’s get to the action…

Following the directions, I mixed one cube with hot water until it formed a chocolate milk like consistency.

Immediately after I started applying the condish to my hair, I noticed that this was not going to be enough. So I went ahead and prepared another cube. I baggied my coated hair and let it stay for about 1 hour. (The package says 45 minutes for an extra deep condition…so I figured another 15 minutes couldn’t hurt).

When it was time, I hopped in the shower and rinsed the Rhassoul from my head. And I mean I rinsed it WELL. I have experimented with clays in the past and I know that this stuff can linger on your scalp and hair if not rinsed properly. And trust me…that is not a good look. When I stepped out of the shower, the first thing I noticed in the mirror was the shine. WOW! My curls were practically smiling at me.

And of course, the camera could not capture the essence of the shine.

Detangling was a breeze and afterwards I threw about 10 quick bantu knots in my hair. The result the next day was super soft, moisturized, defined loosely waved curls.

Sorry about the awful pic quality. A little person who shall not be named destroyed my Nikon so I am mostly working with my phone’s camera. =(

What I love about Anita Grant Raspberry Rhassoul Deep Condish …

The ingredients are rich and pure with ingredients like organic unrefined cocoa butter and fair trade honey. “90% of the total ingredients are from organic farming and 100% of the total ingredients are from a natural origin”.

It delivers everything that it promises! For me that meant smooth soft shiny and lustrous curls.

It made my hair extremely easy to detangle.

My hair stayed moisturized for days. This is something that NEVER happens for me.

The smell was delicious! Next time I'll try the banana version. =)

What I didn’t like about Anita Grant Raspberry Rhassoul Deep Condish ….

- Although I absolutely fell in love with the clay, I will say that

If you have hair that is shoulder length or longer and/or extremely thick, you probably need two (or more) cubes. This was somewhat disappointing to me because it left me with one stinkin cube. You almost have to buy two packs of 3 to make an even distribution.

At first thought, the price seemed right at about $14 dollars, but considering the fact that you get only 1-1/2 uses out of a package, this is actually pretty costly. But it’s still worth it for a special treat every once in a while.

You’ll have to track this baby down. It’s made in the UK and available on the Anita Grant website. This means higher shipping costs and a possibly lengthy wait. There are only a couple of online companies in the US that sell it. I got mine from Kinks Coil & Curls, a local online beauty mart.

Not as easy as squeezing a DC out of a bottle…but for me, the mixing is a part of the special experience =)

You have to be careful about rinsing this out well. It can leave residue on your scalp that can appear dandruff-like. An apple cider vinegar rinse could help with that.

Overall, this deep conditioning treatment is wondrous! But with the little amount that you get for the price, it may be best to save it for once in a while or special occasions.

Finding the Time: My hair maintenance calendar!

My post “ Hi and Bye 2012!! What I’ve Learned About My Hair” is a true testimony to the fact that natural hair does not automatically equal healthy hair. I would venture to say that naturals have even more work on their hands than our relaxed comrades. But as with anything on Earth, hard work comes with great reward. When your hair is showered with tender loving care, the reward of lush and behaving tresses make the blood, sweat, and tears well worth it.

I, like many women, have a truly demanding schedule. With my career, a husband, and two little girls (with two thick, long heads of hair that must be constantly maintained as well), it’s difficult to keep up with my own pampering. Before I know it, weeks and months have gone by without a trim, a deeeeeep conditioning session, or a clarifying wash.

So how does a busy woman keep up with these important routines????? A calendar of course!!!!

I created this personalized calendar to remind myself of when it’s time for action. It will be on full display on my fridge and eventually I’ll get it into my Google calendar. I’ll be doing my darndest to stick to my schedule consisting of trims every 8 weeks, protein treatments about every 5 or 6 weeks, clarifying washes, and protective styling. And while protective styling will be a mainstay in my new routine, my funky fresh and free hairstyles will still be in full effect on Saturdays. Yes ma’am!!

Well well well... Where have you been all my life??

People…2012 has been such an interesting and ever-changing year. It’s truly been a whirlwind! I’m so sorry that I have completely abandoned my new years resolution to blog more. I’ve pretty much done the opposite =(

And now I’m left trying to cope with the fact that it’s almost 2013!! A whirlwind I tell you!

There have been soooo many changes in my life this year and the state of my hair is no exception. Unfortunately, those changes haven’t been so positive. It started last year when all the pampering slowly began to cease. Lack of protective styling (especially overnight), reckless and impatient detangling, and improper moisture infusion led to some pretty upset follicles. It seemed my interest in my hair had peaked and slumped. No wonder I hadn’t posted in a while. =(

95 percent of the time, my hair is worn in its naturally curly state. And my curls seem to hide their pain and frustration when really, they are being abused. By the time I find out my hair is damaged by way of unreasonable tangles, hair coming out in clumps, loss of definition, dull appearance, haystack dryness even when moisturizing products are applied, and refusal to respond properly to straightening or any kind of set (roller, twist or braid out, etc.) it is already too late. I knew what had to happen...a second big chop.

Actually, there were several chops over the course of a year. A snip snip here and there. It seems that no matter how much I cut, there were still damaged ends remaining. Man had I fouled up with my hair!!

In that period of time, my hair (stretched) went from this…

Good Grief!!! And as you can see, there were still some scraggly ends left when this picture was taken… so more was cut since then!

Needless to say, I’ve learned some pretty big lessons about the importance of listening to and caring for my hair.

I’ve also come to accept some things about my hair…

· My hair is pretty fine (but dense). This means that it is quite prone to breakage if not pampered like a babies butt. Detangling needs to be gentle and unhurried.

· My hair needs moisture like a whale needs water and for my texture (coily hair usually has trouble retaining moisture from root all the way to the ends) that means twice daily moisturizing sessions with water, a creamy leave-in (like Giovanni Direct Leave-in…more on my love for this product later), and sealing the ends with oil. Whenever I don’t have the time or energy for this, I at least spritz with a mix of water (rose water if I’m feeling fancy) and olive oil.

· I cannot forget about the things that have worked for me in the past JUST because I’m bored and/or lazy. i.e. sealing with oil, dusting (clipping) my ends periodically, holy grail products.

· My beloved “wash n go’s” must be kept to an absolute minimum. This is the most painful acknowledgment for me. I LOVE my wash n go’s. It’s an easy no-brainer style and I feel most comfortable in my untouched curls. But unfortunately my hair likes to hug itself and it becomes a nightmare to unsnarl if left in its natural state for too long. So…

· Protective styling is a MUST. At least most of the time. This means leaving my hair in twists or braids, tucking my ends, or otherwise leaving my hair unfooled around with for periods of time. I’ve been experimenting a lot with this lately. Some styles worked and others… not so much.

Besides my usual semi-chunky two strand twists, I’ve tried…

The first attempt…I hated. Not me at all.

The second attempt was a little better.

I wouldn’t mind trying these again. I like them because they are super simple and quick to do. I did them myself with a little help from my sister.

And my absolute favorite!!!…

Senegalese twists!!

I wanted these for soooo long. The only downside is the cost (I paid about $200 which is actually on the reasonable end) and the time it takes to do them (13 hours!!!! OMG!) Neither factor am I used to bearing as I’m a DIY type of girl. But I would actually consider having these done again. I loved them so much. They were very versatile and I loved the feeling of having long luxurious hair again.

So the experimenting part has actually been fun =)

Becoming familiar with what works for my hair rather than what I prefer or what’s easy will be key in not only achieving, but keeping length. And even more important than retaining length, tender loving care will result in a healthy head of hair. “Your hair is your crowning glory” as my granny would say.

5 Essentials That Stay in My Natural Hair Toolkit

Looking back on the last 4 years since my “big chop”, I have done lots of research, experiments, and purchasing of the newest products and tools hoping that they would be my “hair savior”. From this, I have learned the importance of having handy and easy tools that can turn a frustrating styling experience into a fabulous hair day on the fly. They don’t always have to be fancy gadgets like this one.

Here’s my top five tried and true hair tools!

#5 Spray Bottle

I love to mix potions in my spray bottle, lightly spraying my hair for moisture and pliability when styling. Some concoctions I’ve added to my bottle include: a base of purified water, aloe vera juice, or rose water mixed with olive, argan, or castor oil. I’ve also enjoyed mixing variations of the youtube sensation, Kimmaytube’s popular DIY leave-in conditioner.

#4 Hairpins / Bobby Pins

These are a MUST for me. With them I can create buns (one of my favorite styles for the office), pin-ups, funky fro-hawks and many more styles. You can find a pack of 100 hairpins or about 40 Bobby Pins for a measly $1 at your local beauty supply.

#3 Wide Toothed Shower Comb

I’ve tried many detangling tools (Denman brushes, Flex combs, Tangle Teezer) some of which I still love and use for certain purposes. But a wide tooth comb (like this one) is a mainstay for me. Its perfect for shower detangling or for a “primary” detangling session before styling. It’s also the easiest tool for me to use on my children’s hair.

#2 Silk or Satin scarf

I find that no matter how moisturized I keep my hair, going to bed just one time without a scarf (which I personally prefer to bonnets because they stay put a little better and pillow cases are decent but usually leave me with a messy mane) results in a dry matted disaster in the morning. Most of us know that cotton, wool (eek!), and other coarse fibers are a no-no but real silk and/or satin-finish scarves may not seem readily available. Furthermore, many of us like to look cute going to bed for our partners or ourselves. My suggestion? Visit your local fabric store and select a half yard of silk or satin that you find irresistible. Tie it in a funky fashion a la June Ambrose and wa-la!! Ferocious AND set for the morning =)

Scarves are also a best friend to pony-tails and puffs, buns, and any other style requiring the hair to lay down. After applying product and brushing into place, I apply my scarf for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This smooths the hair into place and eliminates frizz around the hair line.

And now. Drumroll please…

#1 Pantyhose Legs!!!

Yes… pantyhose legs! Some people use bra straps, headbands, or even regular ol’ ponytail holders. But snipping off the leg of pantyhose or stockings or tights will leave you with an awesome stretchy, flexible hair holder that can easily create pony puffs, pony tails, buns, frohawks, bouffants, and I’m sure there are tons of other styles this dynamic tool can create that I haven’t even explored yet! It’s easy to use, readily available, a breeze to make, and highly cost effective.

What I love most about the pantyhose leg is that it allows those who don’t quite fill out or reach into a ponytail, to easily pull their hair back away from the face. You can gather the hair as far back as you like creating the puff size that you desire and then tie the ends in a loose knot to secure. The stocking is barely recognizable as you can choose a pair that closely matches the color of your hair. And you can cut the hose as long or short as you please.

I guess this is my first official and very impromptu amateur video. I thought a visual would be nice. Usually I would brush the edges down and apply my scarf for a smoother look. But you get the idea =)

They are easy to hand wash and hang up to dry. And I haven’t noticed ANY hair breakage around the point where I usually place my puff in the 4 years that I have been using them.

Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-In Treatment Review

I’m always on the hunt for a great leave-in conditioner. None are created alike and all serve a purpose. You have your creamy leave-ins which are great when you need that extra dose of moisture or for creating twists/braids etc. (ex. Bantu Shea Butter Leave-In). There are leave-ins that are primarily for smooth definition, hold, and shine (ex. Paul Mitchell The Cream). You have your leave-ins that serve mostly to detangle and tame the hair (i.e. Kinky Curly Knot Today). Then there are those thinner liquid leave-ins that usually come in spray form. Many of these claim to condition or revitalize the hair with various vitamins and minerals. Usually I end up disappointed with these variations as they seem to be too watery and lacking the moisturizing capabilities that I seek. That was until I found this...

Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-In Treatment

According to the Aveeno Website: “AVEENO® NOURISH+ CONDITION Leave-In Treatment does much more than nourish and condition — it quenches the thirstiest hair with a fusion of deep conditioners and moisturizers, recharging it with healthy new life. I absolutely love this product! The feel of the product is thin but not watery. You can feel the oil in the product but it doesn’t leave a greasiness or heaviness on the hair. My favorite way to use it is to give my hair a mist while its damp and as a base for any other product that I might use. I also use it to refresh and moisturize daily.

What I Like About Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-In

It’s thin enough to use in the convenient spray form but not so watery that it feels ineffective

Moisturizing but not heavy or greasy

The nozzle sprays very wide allowing for even distribution without overuse of product
Serves as a heat protectant so I don’t have to use a different leave-in when I straighten
Smells great
Works for many textures
Won’t break your wallet at about $7 for a 5.2oz bottle

What I Don’t Like About Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-In

Hmmmmm…you should be able to purchase it by the gallon

As you can see, I really like this product. If you are looking for a leave-in that you can use daily to refresh your hair, that is dual purpose for many hairstyles and types, moisturizing and replenishing, and plays well with other products…this one may be for you!!

Queen Helene Royal Curl Review!

You may be familiar with the Queen Helene product line if you’ve ever slathered your hair in Cholesterol for a strengthening protein treatment, rid your kneecaps and elbows of ash with the Cocoa Butter lotion, or gave yourself a DIY facial with the line of masks and scrubs (love the Mint Julep masque for unexpected blemishes and the Apricot scrub for reviving dull skin!) Queen Helene has been around for ages and is definitely a household name. So imagine my delight when I noticed that the line has expanded to join the “natural hair frenzy” with its new Royal Curl products.

I picked up two products that just happened to be on sale for $6.99 each at Target that week.

The Royal Curl Moisture Rich Conditioner claims “to powerfully remove frizz, define curls and smooth waves” with “the nutrient packed super-food that feeds the Queen Bee in her hive. Packed with 17 amino acids plus vitamins A, B, C, D, and K, the Royal Jelly in Moisture Rich Conditioner works with Jojoba Seed Oil and Green Tea antioxidants to deliver luxurious shine and ultimate softness while defending hair from heat and humidity.” Royal Jelly, which is a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae and adult queens, seems to be the star of the Royal Curl line.

And the product claims all natural status with no alcohol, sulfates, petrolatum, parabens, or phthalates but does actually have cetearyl alcohol (which is known as a “fatty” alcohol that helps condition the hair) and Behentrimonium Methosulfate which is an extremely mild detangling agent made from rapeseed (no not grapeseed) oil and not actually a sulfate.

The conditioner appeared to be everything I look for in a conditioner. It was extremely thick and creamy and smelled wonderful . I washed my hair like usual in the shower, applying the conditioner after, and detangling with a large toothed shower comb (with conditioner still in). Immediately, I noticed that the Moisture Rich Conditioner did not have the “slip” that I’m used to with my beloved favorite conditioners like Herbal Essences Long-Term Relationship and Hello Hydration or Neutrogena Triple Moisture. For me, the slip is soooo important because it prevents my delicate strands from breaking off during the detangling process. Also, Moisture Rich didn’t seem to impart much moisture =( And my curl definition was just…regular. So this product was a no go for me. Maybe it would work better as a leave-in or for co-washes.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ROYAL CURL MOISTURE RICH CONDITIONER:

Smells great with great consistency
The price is definitely right at about $7.99 for a 12 oz. bottle
Although I didn’t love it for it’s actual purpose, it could work for someone who doesn’t need copious amounts of moisture or a detangling aid. Or for leave-in or co-washes
Does not contain harmful additives

WHAT I DON’T LIKE ABOUT ROYAL CURL MOISTURE RICH CONDITIONER:

Almost non-existent slip to aid in detangling and curl definition
My hair didn’t feel much softer, smoother, or moisturized

Next up…

The Royal Curl Curl Shaping Créme claims to “transform kinks to defined curls and soft waves” (still not sure how I feel about this…I think kinks are beautiful too…but I digress) and “to naturally tame frizz, define curls and smooth waves with silky hold. Pure Aloe Vera Gel and Agave Nectar quench your hair’s thirst without the grease, while powerful Green Tea antioxidants and intense moisturizers defend against damaging heat and humidity.” Again with no alcohol, sulfates, petrolatum, parabens, or phthalates.

The consistency is like that of jelly. It’s pretty similar to the Shea Moisture Curl Soufflé from my review here but WITHOUT the icky silicone feeling. I had high hopes for this one! I applied on soaking wet hair and finger combed through hair that was detangled in the shower. I must say my curls were pleased. The Shaping Créme didn’t feel sticky or icky and didn’t dry to a super crunchy finish. HOWEVER…this product had one major flaw. It left a white flaky residue on my hair!! This is something that I hate hate HATE in a leave-in/curl cream. Generally, products like this look beautiful on wet or damp hair and then you go about your business thinking your hair looks fly and all of a sudden you catch a glimpse of what looks like a mound of dandruff perched atop your head. Just tacky. I tried using less product and still the same result. So disappointing. Ah well…

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ROYAL CURL Curl Shaping Créme:

Smells wonderful and promising consistency
Again a great price at about $7.99 for a 15oz. jar
Does make my curls POP and doesn’t dry overly crunchy
Great ingredients and all natural: No alcohol, sulfates, petrolatum, parabens, or phthalates

WHAT I DON’T LIKE ABOUT ROYAL CURL Curl Shaping Créme:

Terrible terrible terrible white flakiness when dry =(

Overall, the Queen Helene Royal Curl line is promising and may be great for someone else but didn’t quite work out for me. I do appreciate that the line is free of harmful additives and the price is right. I’ll probably try the Moisture Rich conditioner in my leave-in mixtures and as a co-wash from time to time. And I still want to try the Smoothing Oil from the Royal Curl line which claims to “add Moisture and Shine, Strengthens to Prevent Future Breakage”. Hmm, could be the treasure I was seeking.

Happy MLK Day everybody! Oh yeah and Happppy New Year!! Wait…Merry Christmas and Happy Thanksgiving too. Yeah…that’s how long it’s been. Blame life. (work, kids, stuff, and pinterest) I must apologize to my people out there who took the time to follow my lil ol blog. I promise to do better in 2012… I promise!

2012!!!

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about this year and it’s been pretty interesting so far. I’m looking forward to new beginnings, renewed purpose, and turning 30!!! Something about turning 30 makes you zoom in to your own individuality and what’s most important and necessary involving relationships and family, career goals and paths, and even how you look. And since this is a blog focused on personal style, I’m sharing the deets on my new outlook on fashion, hair health, and beauty as well as some new allies that will be joining my arsenal in 2012. My mantra for 2012: Focus on outwardly reflecting the optimism that I’m feeling on the inside.

Let’s get right into it…

[ Not only am I working on the most obvious resolution, getting my body in shape, but I’m also beginning to realize the importance of creating a more positive mental image of the body I’m working with right now. And that positive body image needs to reflect in my wardrobe…Instead of feeling that “my body makes certain clothes look bad”, I’m choosing to focus on certain clothes that make my body look BADDDD (bad meaning good not bad meaning bad).

This black sweater knit cotton skirt from the Sophia Vergara line at KMart is everything to me and probably my favorite clothing purchase of 2011! And from Kmart of all places! Not that I’m a snob about where I buy my clothes…I’m just more of a Targét girl

The details make all the difference between this skirt and a regular ol mini. The ruching is very flattering on my curves and forgiving of any lumps and bumps. It can be worn high on the waist (which is how I prefer it because it adds length to my short legs, balancing out my longer torso) or stretched and worn low on the hips to create a near knee length pencil skirt look. It can be dressed down or up, worn with boots, pumps, or flats, and layered over tights or under blazers, tunics, or sweaters. I love to pair this with a billowy flowing top to balance wide hips and hide not so shapely arms. Absolutely perfect addition to the collection! And the price was oh so right. Can you say clearance for $12?!

Honorable Mention: Platform Pumps!!! I’m sooo not a “heels girl”…as a matter of fact I’m not really a big “shoe girl” (I know I should be stoned). But I realize the magic that they can create for an outfit, my posture, and height. Platform pumps can perform miracles with the illusion of extra heel height supported by the platform. Finding the right ones can still require a lot of searching but these babies have definitely come through for me in the clutch and will be rocked in 2012!

[ Next and just as important…I’m focusing on giving my hair the attention it craves. Not too long before the new year I did some major chopping starting about here…

About a good five inches. Not tooooo drastic. But I hate when I have to chop my hair due to negligence. Yes negligence. Stemming from detangling too infrequently, too many wash n go’s, and not protecting at night. I have recently realized just how fine in texture my hair is. This means that my strands are relatively weak and delicate and MUST be pampered in order to prevent breakage.

FAVORITE HAIR PRODUCT THAT WILL ROCK IN 2012…

Kinky Curly Knot Today!!!! I know, I know…I’m late to this party. It has been a fave amongst natural/kinky/curly ladies since it’s creation years ago. But I love to resist the norm… *shrug*, especially at a borderline high price tag ($12 at Target). For those of you who are like me, let me tell you…this stuff is the BEES KNEES!!! Meaning awesome and definitely worth the cost. Used as a detangler, it simply melts knots and tangles. It’s a dream on my hair as well as my two daughters. And we all have different textures. Life is so much easier since ~~torturing~~ hair combing sessions have been reduced by at least half the time. Used as a leave-in, it defines and shines my curls and leaves them moisturized but not greasy at all. I will definitely be using this to keep my hair detangled more frequently which will reduce unnecessary shedding and breakage. KEEPER!!

Honorable Mention: OLD SCHOOL HAIR GREASE. Yes, petroleum…mineral oil…parabens and all. Old school grease (think Blue Magic, Magic GRO, Indian Hemp) has made a comeback. Surprise Surprise…women are fickle. Warning! While some use this a sealant over oils, I only use it for braid and twist-outs (nothing I’ve seen creates shinier deeper sets). I also wouldn’t recommend putting this on your scalp because of the pore-clogging tendencies of some of the ingredients. Finally, a nice clarifying wash should follow to prevent dullness, dryness over time, and hair that is attractive to lint.

[ This year, I’m vowing to wear makeup that will only highlight what I’m working with naturally. Over the past couple of years I have experimented with tinted moisturizers and then finally full blown foundation. Recently, I have discovered that NEWSFLASH!…I don’t even need all that. I’ve noticed in pictures my face leaning towards that thing I hate the most…CAKINESS! NEVER a good look… Especially considering that I’ve been blessed with pretty good skin. Never had an acne problem and relatively even toned. My main concerns are hereditary darkness under my eyes and winter dullness.

FAVORITE MAKEUP PURCHASES FOR A CLEANER LOOK THAT WILL ROCK IN 2012…

MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer in NC50

MAC makes one of my favorite concealers for women of color and the added SPF makes this a unique staple. A few light dabs of concealer to spot check the raccoon eyes and and any other noticeable blemishes, followed by…

e.l.f. High Definition Powder

e.l.f cosmetics High Definition Powder dusted lightly on top to set the concealer. This stuff is pretty great at setting makeup and making it last for hours while preventing shine. It’s especially useful in humid climates and looks great on photos. Some compare it to the higher end Make Up For Ever microfinish HD Powder, which I have never tried. This one-two punch makes for a nice even tone that is not over the top in coverage where I don’t need it. Nice!

Honorable Mention: A little blush or bronzer goes a long way for that extra oomph. I’m a big fan of e.l.f.’s Body Shimmer stick from from my previous haul here. And finally and most importantly… we all know that nothing will create a lesser need for foundation like taking great care of the skin you have! Of course lots of water, restful nights, proper diet, no smoking, mild cleansing, exfoliation, moisture, and religious removal of makeup at days end will leave you with skin that can’t be purchased in a bottle.

[ I’m a big believer in breaking rules of style and fashion. Even if they’re my own lol! Even if the rest of the world hates it!! My exception to my previous rule – Sometimes makeup is just supposed to be fun!!!!!

“Video vixen” and entrepreneur Keyshia Dior launched her exquisite line of high quality lipsticks, glosses, and polishes in 2011 that are not exactly for the faint of heart. When my little sis so humbly asked me to purchase a couple for her for Christmas , I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist grabbing one for myself. The bright electric blue tinted #diordoll caught my eye immediately and I had to have her. A little bit of a splurge at $17.99 for a lippie that definitely won’t see constant rotation, I treated myself to this baby to add a fun pop on New Years Eve/ my 4th anniversary. And I didn’t regret it for a minute! The color is so beautiful and not as odd looking as one may think.

Honorable Mention: Let’s talk about eyebrows. For a while there in my younger 20’s I suffered from extremely thin eyebrows from constant plucking, waxing, and shaving. I didn’t really notice how harsh it made my face look and drawing on brows just seemed so ridiculous to me. BUT I started researching the proper way to FILL IN eyebrows with pencils and powders and boy what a difference. The eyebrows are the frames of your face and can make or break your look. I prefer a healthy thick brow (think Eva Mendes) and it takes a lot of practice to pull off. Sometimes I get them perfect…sometimes not so much. But you will never catch me with a razor thin brow AGAIN! Recently I purchased the Maybelline Define a Brow in Dark Brown. It’s a retractable shelf-sharpening pencil in the style of MAC’s eyebrow pencil line. It also includes a little comb on the end to brush hairs into place and blend into a more natural look. LOVE

[ Last but not least, I have to let you in on my absolute favorite favorite favorite ally in style that will definitely be rocking with me now until there is no tomorrow…

Growing up as the child of two aesthetically eccentric artists has got to reflect in your own personal style. Zoe Kravitz truly embodies that freedom of expression that her actress mom, Lisa Bonet, and rock star dad, Lenny Kravitz are known for.

Zoe is the spitting image of her mom with similar funky hippie style, yet she makes seemingly more approachable and fun choices (like her dad). In her teens, she became popular as the paps would catch her on the street rocking her “dirty boho grunge” also lovingly called by press, “dumpster chic”. She was even quoted as saying “my look is I don’t give a f@@k.” But the camera loved her. She was so strikingly gorgeous and confident that the look worked for her. Zoe embodies the idea that fashion shouldn’t be pretentious or based on some standard of what’s hot. It should truly be a personal expression.

Product Review! Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Soufflé

I have been a fan of Shea Moisture Products for quite some time now. Shea Moisture (exclusively found at Target and Walgreens stores) offers a full line of organic and natural hair and body products. Most of the items that I have tried from this line, I have absolutely loved (Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and Conditioner, Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Baby Eczema Therapy Butter, Curl & Style Milk, Black Soap Balancing Conditioner etc., etc., …).

Imagine my excitement when I learned that a new product would be arriving on Target shelves on August 28th. Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Soufflé with Agave Nectar & Flax Seed Oil sounded pretty darn great to me. If it was anything like my vision, it would be an awesome gel alternative that would allow me to smooth my edges AND create curl poppage without drying to a hard crisp. This should be a score! So I hit the store on launch day halfway knowing that the product wouldn’t be stocked yet. And it wasn’t . Finally a few days later I found a jar tucked away in the Shea Moisture bath and body section (kept separate from the line of hair care products) AND at a cost of $11.99 ($2 more than the rest of the hair care line). Hmm? Oh well, into the cart anyway. This stuff must be good.

When I opened the jar, I noticed the consistency to be pretty much what I expected, a clear gel-like formula. And the smell was wonderful as per usual with Shea Moisture products. However, what I got when I dabbed a little bit on my fingers was quite off-putting. This stuff was greasy and sticky. Somewhat like a silicone. I already knew that this would leave some sort of film on my hair.

I thought maybe it would be ok if it also added an abundance of moisture and shine without the hardness that can be left by many products after the hair dries. But I can’t even say that it left much shine or moisture. And the residue was overwhelming! The jar claims that it eliminates frizz. Not so much. I tried it on my edges and not only did it provide no smoothing hold, but it seemed to UP the frizz factor (???) No comparison at all to my beloved EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel. I tried it as a blow-drying aid as indicated on the jar. No bueno! The residue made me nauseous . I tried it on a wet twist-out. A little better here as it did provide some definition. But again with the residue!! I didn’t even want to touch my hair. I didn’t even take the time to use it on a wash n go. There was no point.

What I like about this product:

Decent twist-out
Smells great
Great ingredients (I thought)

What I don’t like about this product:

Silicone-like RESIDUE!!!
Didn’t dry hard, but no hold whatsoever
Actually costs $2 more than the rest of the Shea Moisture hair product line

Although the Curling Soufflé might work for some heads of hair, it was definitely a miss for me. It had potential if not for the sticky yuckiness. What a disappointment! But hey, I still love you Shea Moisture and I’ll keep my eyes open for the next product launch.

Boy is it a busy time in politics right now. Our nation's chief, President Barack Obama attended the World Trade Center memorial yesterday for the 10th anniversary of the catastrophe that occurred on September 11, 2001. And today he is pushing out his $447 billion jobs bill to Congress. And let’s not forget that we are officially in campaigning days. In light of this political frenzy, I thought I would dedicate today's post for the 30 Day Style Icon Challenge to the woman who stays on the grind just as much as her husband. The woman ~~behind~~ next to the man, First Lady Michelle Obama.

Staff or no staff, team or no team, entourage or none, clearly Michelle Obama is a woman who was born with style and grace. She is the epitome of refinement, sophistication, and elegance without being a big ol yawn. She is the first First Lady since Jackie O who effortlessly presents a polished look mixed with the right amount of sex appeal courtesy of figure flattering cuts and ever so slight baring of shapely shoulders, arms, or legs. What??? Yes, the First Lady is a sexy mother... (that's it, she's just a sexy mother guys).

30 Day Style Icon Challenge: Day 2 - Erykah Badu

I’m not ashamed to admit my serious girl crush on Erykah. She just oozes confidence and errr um what’s the word?…ugh…Swag. She is a true chameleon who always keeps her fans guessing about what she’s going to pull off next. Afro, locs, braids, blonde, disco, boho, sporty, sexy, freaky. She remains undefined by set standards of beauty, though she is definitely no stranger to gorgeousness.

How fitting for my #1 Style Icon to be on the 10th anniversary of her untimely passing. And in my humble opinion, she’s still a style visionary to this day…

When Aaliyah debuted in 1994, I was immediately intrigued by her style. The sleek hair, the dark shades and lips (it was at this moment that my fascination with super dark lipstick began lol), and tomboyish clothing that surely didn't cover up what a cutey patootey she was. Her age was a mystery, but obviously she was a teenager. And she wasn’t one of those sugar pop sickeningly sweet artists. She was down-to-earth, mature, and pretty but rough around the edges.

I could relate to this girl.

The next time she resurfaced, it was 2 years later. She had definitely grown up, oozing sexuality in her style, movements, and music but keeping that "round the way" tomboy quality that her fans came to associate her with. It was my sophomore year in high school and I too was finding a sense of sexy. Oh boy did I become obsessed with all things midriff! (And I probably still would be if I weren't post two kids. lol!) I had her style down to a science complete with baggy pants and swoop of hair over the eye. Gosh I wish I had a photo of me doing my best impersonation.

By the time her final album came out in 2001, Aaliyah was a movie star. She began to make bolder choices with her hair, makeup, and fashion choices, introducing glamour into the mix.

Perfection!

Her image, her style, her music were so important to me growing up. I clung to her like we had a personal bond. And when she passed, I was at a loss. She remains an important icon defining what it means to be edgy and sweet, sexy and classy, bold and mysterious. RIP Aaliyah

Summers Here! My Essential Products...

Well beach babes, we've just moseyed through the 1st couple weeks of Summer! I love Summertime in Chicago. The lakefront is perfect, the festivals are awesome, and my birthday is in August! But one of the best things about summer is that I get to wash my hair and fly out the door fancy free without fear of pneumonia or hypothermia. You know...the wash 'n' go.

I've been guilty of trying to "wash 'n' go" during winter months...not smart. And for more reasons than the obvious one. Wash 'n' go's can be hard on the hair. Especially if your mane isn't detangled frequently (extreme breakage during an infrequent detangling session), moisturized properly, or protected at night (again extreme breakage can happen). I find it easier of course to manage this style during the summer. My hair holds moisture better with the humidity in the air. But while this is true, my hair still needs a little help to look its best. I'm already well into some summer treats that I want to share with you!

I love a good value. So why spend more on a product that has the same ingredients and provides the same results (reviewers on Sally Beauty Supply's website gave it 4.5/5) . I discovered this leave-in at a Sally Beauty Supply location and figured I would give it a try since it was on sale for $5 and I'm always experimenting with new leave-ins. This product really defines my curls and adds shine. The Cream is pretty cone heavy for those of you who are sensitive or try to avoid them. It can also leave the hair a little crunchy once dry so I like to add a light oil on top. Which brings me to my next summer fave...

Carol's Daughter - Lisa's Hair Elixir

I kinda sorta have a love hate relationship with Carol's Daughter. Most of their products just don't do it for me. They add no moisture or life to my hair and the smell of some CD products can be overwhelming to say the least. But then there are some that really impress me. Lisa's hair elixir is one of them. It took me awhile to try the "elixir" even after years of seeing Jada Pinkett-Smith tout the product as a must have for creating her glorious mane. But finally, after Carol's Daughter made their debut on daily discount website Hautelook, I decided to go ahead and order. Still when the bottle came, I left it sitting on my product junkie shelf for several months. This was mostly due to the strong peppermint odor that attacked my nostrils when I peeled the seal of the bottle back. Then, one day I just decided to use it on freshly washed hair when I was looking for something EXTREMELY light. And Lisa's hair elixir did it for me! Not greasy at all and I didn't need much to provide a light sheen and softness. I also like to use this over leave-ins and gels to avoid the crunch factor. The strong smell of peppermint did die down after awhile but if you are overly sensitive to smells, you might want to avoid this one. The regular price is $20 for a 8 oz. bottle. Yeah, a little bit pricey. But I purchased on Hautelook for about $12 ;-)

Qhemet Biologics is becoming one of my favorite brands. Although they are quite expensive, the ingredients are high quality and they generally last awhile. I allow myself to splurge on a quality product like this a couple times a year. The last Qhemet product I purchased (Alma & Olive Heavy Cream) was perfect for Chicago's harsh winter weather. This time I picked up the Olive & Honey Hydrating Balm at my local health food store that carries a pretty good selection of the Qhemet product line. I thought that this stuff would be great when I need something a little heavier than a light oil, but not as heavy as a cream. Looking at this balm, you would think that it was sticky, especially with honey being in the name. However, about a quarter size amount of it soaks right into the hair leaving it moist yet not sticky at all. I love using it on 2nd, 3rd, 4th day hair and on pony puffs and edges. The scent is light and citrusy. Not overpowering at all. It was about $16 for an 8 oz. jar that is lasting me forever. Love this stuff!

Giovanni - Golden Wheat Deep Cleanse Shampoo

I've said before, I'll say it again...clarifying is super important for maintaining beautiful healthy hair and scalp. This couldn't be more true in the summer. Humidity + Sweat + Products = Havoc on the hair. My problem with clarifying shampoo is that it can be really harsh on the hair, stripping more than necessary. I've tried natural clarifiers, but for me grabbing a bottle and getting it over with is optimal. I ran across this at the same health food store where I found the Qhemet balm, and because I'm familiar with the popular Giovanni brand, I decided to give this shampoo a try and I'm glad I did! Golden Wheat removes buildup and oils with natural menthol and not harsh chemicals. It leaves my hair feeling squeaky clean and defined and not dry and parched and its not too expensive at about $5 - $8 a bottle depending on the retailer. Even though Golden Wheat does not strip the hair entirely, moisture should still be added back to the hair and for that, I'm in love with...

Aussie - 3 Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner

Can you see how many e's Aussie put on this bottle? When they say deeeeep conditioner, they mean it. This stuff is superb! I can count on half a hand how many deep conditioners have knocked my socks off. This one is definitely on that short list. The slip is perfect, allowing me to detangle with ease. You don't need a whole lot either. After my rinse, my hair is left bouncy, shiny, soft, and defined. AND it's pretty inexpensive at about $3 a bottle. This one is a keeper!

I have been waxed you know where twice. Once for my honeymoon and once years later when I purchased a groupon for a deal that couldn't be passed up. Both times I left asking myself what type of self-hatred issues I must have to put myself through such medieval torture. But after the traumatics have worn off, I've been pleased with the results. #9 about being overly dramatic about the pain makes me wonder if maybe I haven't met the right waxer yet. Because that crap hurts!!! Right up there with childbirth lol! Adventures in Bentonite Clay!!

I have blogged a couple of times about the importance of clarifying your hair, natural or relaxed. Clarifying is super important for maintaining a healthy scalp and stripping the hair of excess product residue that can cause your hair to look dull and feel stiff. Sometimes I forget this very important step in my haircare routine for a couple of months and I end up wondering why my hair looks soooo blah.

Usually I use cheapo Suave clarifying shampoo and sometimes a few drops of Dr. Bronners Tea Tree Castille Soap followed by a moisturizing shampoo. However, regular clarifying shampoos can end up being extremely harsh on the hair, even when moisturizing products are applied afterwards. Natural clarifyers such as bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda are a gentler option. And being the willing guinea pig that I am, I have embarked on an exploration starting with bentonite clay for your viewing pleasure :-)

Bentonite clay is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate, consisting mostly of montmorillonite usually forming from the weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. (wiki). According to more than alive:

Bentonite clay is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays used to treat both internal and external maladies. Bentonite can be used externally as a clay poultice, mud pack or in the bath, and in skin care recipes. Internally, it can be added to water or glazed upon food to help those with sensitive palates. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining. Its highest power lies in the ability to absorb toxins, impurities, heavy metals and other internal contaminants. Bentonite clay's structure assists it in attracting and soaking up poisons on its exterior wall and then slowly draws them into the interior center of the clay where it is held in a sort of repository. To state it another way, Bentonite is swelling clay. When it becomes mixed with water it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge. From here the toxins are drawn into the sponge through electrical attraction and once there, they are bound.

Sounds pretty great right? I decided to do a hair AND face mask...a whole little 30 minute spa day =)

For my first attempt with the clay, I purchased the loose variety like the one pictured above from the bulk bin at Whole Foods. It was $1/oz, which I thought was pretty good but I don't think I purchased quite enough. Maybe about 3 ounces or so. The powder was chalky white and when mixed with warm water as I had seen online (mixture should not come into contact with metal), the result was a thick chunky paste.

I applied as liberally as possible with the amount that I had to my hair and face.

The second time I used a popular brand that I had seen on the net, Azteca Indian Healing Clay.

This one is strictly for external use only (food grade versions can be taken orally for internal detoxifying). I bought it from a local health food store for about $9 for a 1lb tub. Way better deal then loose version at Whole Foods. You can find it even cheaper on the net.

This one mixed into a much smoother concoction and this time I added a little apple cider vinegar as I had seen done in youtube tutorials. (Darn my lack of scientific method lol)

This mixture also had a more "clayish" texture and color that I was expecting the first time. I mixed quite a large amount and applied liberally to my hair and face.

This stuff dries to a super crisp very quickly. It's not recommended to keep this on your hair until its completely dry and should only be left on your face for 15-20 minutes.

The result was definitely better the second go round. Probably because I was able to saturate my hair better with the larger quantity of clay. After rinsing out all the clay and deep conditioning, I was left with light feeling shiny bouncy happy curls.

As for the face mask, I did feel like my skin had a little glow to it after I washed it off. My skin was definitely as soft as the back of a baby's knee. :-)

Overall, I think this was definitely a great natural alternative to the sometimes harsh clarifying shampoos on the market. It's always fun experimenting with these things and I will be trying other experimental options in the future. But for me...its soooo much easier to just grab the bottle of shampoo. So I'll be on a quest to find the perfect one. *rings product junkie bell*

Hair Inspiration for When I'm Feeling Blah

Everybody has those hair ruts. Whether you are relaxed, natural, transitioning, straight, kinky, curly or otherwise, sometimes you just look in the mirror and wish that you could blink and change the look you usually love so much. Recently with the added growth of my hair, I've been in a blah stage. My old hairstyles don't work quite the same and it's forcing me to be creative. Ugh! I have wanted to pick up the scissors on many occasions but I just stick it out and look for inspiration.

The celebrities below help me do just that! They have lengths, textures, patterns, and thickness similar to my own. The heads of hair on these chicks give me a renewed sense of love for my own. Hopefully, they can inspire you through your shaky days too!

Tangle Teezer Review!

I have waited more than 2 months to review the Tangle Teezer as I am somewhat quick to support a product which I have initially fallen in love with in only one use (i.e. Denman brushes, Jilbere comb). At this point, I can definitely say I like this item. There are a few things that I hope the distributors of the Tangle Teezer improve upon. But overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Like with many new items that enter the market, I'm a little slow to jump on the bandwagon. This was especially true with the Tangle Teezer. I had just paid a nice little penny to purchase my Denman paddle brush online and I had become very fond of it (see my review on the Denman here). Furthermore, I wondered how a 47 year-old British man could know anything about detangling my kinks.

But the whispers about how great this "miracle brush" was became roars online. I was intrigued, but still remained faithful to the Denman, which I actually still love. After my good friend and hair buddy tried it and loved it, I figured what the hay...there's nothing wrong with having more than one awesome tool in your arsenal...*product junkies nod in agreement*

When I first scoped out Sally's for the Teezer, it was nowhere to be found. I mean, the demand for this thing was outrageous. I waited a couple of weeks and finally Sally's had received a new shipment.

The design of this brush/comb/detangler thingy, is like nothing I've ever seen. It has an ergonomic design which fits the palm of your hand and short plastic super flexible bristles (designed to smooth the follicles without damaging them while creating shine and vibrancy) which I doubted would be able to get through my thick kinks and coils.

I tried the Teezer for the first time during my usual shower detangling session. After a wash, I loaded my hair with conditioner and began to brush through firmly, section by section. Now when I said the Denman was pain-free, what I meant to say was virtually. LOL! I mean what I'm saying right now when I say the Tangle Teezer was PAIN-FREE. So pain-free, that I was convinced that this thing wasn't detangling crap! After I finished brushing through my whole head, I noticed that my hair looked detangled and my coils were forming nicely. But I still wasn't convinced. So I grabbed my Denman and went over my work. Sure enough, I was able to brush right through with no snarls or snags. IMPRESSIVE!!

For an even greater test, I tried the Tangle Teezer in my dry hair. This is something I almost never do for fear of breakage. It was awesome!!! I couldn't go through very large sections of hair due to the thickness of my mane. However, that remains the same for all detangling tools in my toolbox. The Tangle Teezer was truly amazing.

What I like about the Tangle Teezer:

No snags, no pain, and the hair was tangle-free from roots to ends and I have not lost any teeth like I have with the Denman
Probably the ONLY tool that I will use on my dry hair because it does not break my hair
Great for many hair types.WONDERFUL on my children's hair. Both have extremely thick, long, coarse hair. This makes styling a breeze
Almost as good as a boar bristle brush for smoothing my hair into a ponytail, bun, updo, etc.
Easy to clean. Layer of shed hair comes off easy and short bristles allow for easy cleaning with a bristled brush.

What I did not like about the Tangle Teezer:

Although the TT is great at distributing conditioner, I preferred to use it on dry or damp hair simply because it is hard to use in the shower due to the handle-less design. Hopefully, they will create versions that have a handle or even a strap that can allow for a better grip. I will continue to use my Denman in the shower until they have done so
I have found on most Tangle Teezer sponsored websites, as well as its own, that it is not advisable to use the TT with a blow dryer. There are folks on a few blogs and forums that have done so anyway, such as this one. Because I don't blow dry often, the lack of a handle on the TT, and its seemingly meltable material, I have avoided blow drying my hair with it. The lack of versatility in this area is a downside for me
And...they came out with a pink and purple one right after I bought mine :-(
