Albert steps down as League Director

It was eleven years ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was young and so excited about competing. I called Chris Hayes, the FLCPA league director, over and over again to ask him when he would have the schedule done for the upcoming season. After about five or six times asking he turned to me and said “Albert, I think you should make the schedule.” I went to his house that weekend and picked up a Rubbermaid bin of tape measures, a few clipboards, stakes and a dozen pool noodles. That was the day I became the league director of the greatest opportunity to teach the world how to compete in our great discipline of canopy piloting.

Over the last eleven years I’ve done my best to keep this league, our league, as a place where pro pilots come to train, exchange ideas with each other, and share their knowledge with tomorrow’s pro pilots. A place where beginners can come and safely learn how to compete. A place to show everyone in our sport that canopy piloting can be done safely.

This league is near and dear to me and I am extremely proud of what it has become. It would not be the spectacular league it is without everyone’s help. But after eleven years the time has come for me to step aside and let another carry on the vision of this great league. It’s been a tough decision and I’ve had quite a few sleepless nights but I’m confident the new league directors will do a spectacular job carrying the torch.

It’s my pleasure to hand the reigns to Curt and Jeannie Bartholomew. They have grown to be pillars in the FLCPA and World CP community and I’m happy to see the league in their capable hands. They both started competing here. I remember the first meets they showed up to. I remember their first wins, and their first days coaching here. they are truly FLCPA homegrown. Now they will have the honor and responsibility of helping to usher in tomorrow’s would be national and world champions. Thank you to all who have competed, judges, volunteered, hosted, or been involved in making the league what it has become and what it will continue to be. The experience of organizing this league has changed my life for the better in so many ways.

Jeannie, Curt, You’re going to need a tow hitch to pick up the course materials now…we’ve upgraded a bit since the single Rubbermaid tub I got 11 years ago:-).

FLCPA Meet #5 at Skydive Paraclete XP Wraps Up

The fifth meet of the season saw everyone converge in Raeford, NC at Skydive Paraclete XP. 28 competitors gathered as the season starts to wind down and rankings begin to solidify. The weather was great all week and those that arrived early got some great training in. The day of the comp saw an early wheels up at 7am with light and variable winds. Speed was the first event and after a practice round and a brief hold for some low layer clouds the meet progressed quickly. In the Pro class Curt Bartholomew toped the time sheets after a cutaway on round two and an ensuing rejump. He was followed by Justin Price and Greg Windmiller. In the Advanced class Beau Riebe was the man to beat, followed by Jesse Weyher and Robin Jandle. The Beginners were topped by newcomer Kian Morris, followed by David Williams and Jeremy George. The comp progressed into Zone Accuracy with extremely variable conditions. They were tough to read with winds switching between headwind, crosswind and downwind all in a matter of minutes. Curt topped the score sheets again followed by Matt Shull and Joe Abeln. The Advanced fought it out with Blake Gaynor taking top honors followed closely by Beau Riebe and Richo Healy. The Beginner class saw a rare tie for Zone Acc between Kian Morris and Tom Esposito, followed by Jeremy George. The meet closed up with Distance, and in the Pro Class Curt was on top again followed by PDFT members Travis Mills and Justin Price. The conditions were light winds but slow conditions keeping the distances fairly short. In the beginner class Jesse Weyher put up some impressive runs, followed by Beau Riebe and Richo Healy. When the dust settled after the last round and in the Pro class Curt Bartholomew from Team Alter Ego Fastrax took the Gold overall with 598.7 points out of 600, followed by Matt Shull with another great performance, and the final spot of the podium was Justin Price of the PD Factory Team. Rounding out the top 5 was the rest of Alter Ego Fastrax with Alex Hart in 4^th and Jeannie Bartholomew in 5^th. This locked the season overall win for Curt with 400 out of 400 points. Matt seems to have solidified his 2^nd place finish for the season, and Justin Price is in 3^rd for the season as well. Beau Riebe won the Gold in the Advanced class, followed closely by Jesse Weyher. These two locked down those places for the season overall finish as well. 3^rd on the podium was Robin Jandle from Hawaii, this was her first podium finish (beer!) Matt Koch sits in 3^rd for the Season Overalls with Robin right on his heels. Newcomer Kian Morris won the Beginner class, with Jeremy George and David Williams fithing it out as usually for the podium positions. David sits first overall in the beginners, with Siddharth Choudhury in 2^nd, with Jeremy George in 3^rd having only completed 3 meets so far. The meet went off without a hitch, zero injuries and a quick finish in the early afternoon thanks to the awesome judges, meet director, and the staff at Skydive Paraclete XP. The league would like to thank everyone involved for such an awesome event!

We’re super excited to announce that we’ll be bringing back PD TVEIR
Tveir is the first all 2-way, team canopy piloting competition to be organized anywhere in the world. The first () TVEIR took place in 2012 at Skydive City in Zephyrhills, Florida. For 2018 we’ll be hosting this event at Skydive Sebastian immediately following the FLCPA meet #6, and USPA Canopy Piloting Nationals. Check out the Tveir 2014 video below.. time to get EXCITED

Meet 4 West Tennessee wrap-up

As always the folks at West Tennessee Skydiving showed us what southern hospitality is all about. Competitors made their way to the DZ throughout the week prior to the meet. Those who came early take advantage of the dz running loads all week.

Saturday morning we started with wheels up at 7:00am. The winds were out of the south which made for a nice smooth tailwind through the speed and distance events. Some super fast runs went down including Jeannie Bartholomew from Alter Ego Fastrax setting a new Tennessee state female speed record at 2.418 seconds and a new General speed record by Justin Price from the PD Factory Team at 2.078 seconds.

After a quick course change we moved into the distance event. With a monster 134.45 meter run Jeannie also set a new state female distance record. In the advanced class Richo Healy was on his way to a win after winning speed and taking both 100’s in the distance event. In the beginner class Jeremy George was following a similar path to victory, pulling ahead in speed and also winning both distance runs.

After a short break for lunch and a few isolated thunderstorms, we rocked into the zone accuracy event. 2-4mps headwind looked ideal for this event, but the strong winds in the set-up along with slow mucky air had a lot of competitors coming up short, or going swimming.

At the end of the meet Curt Bartholomew had the Gold and has now locked-up the season overall win. Matt Shull from US Airforce took silver with a strong showing in all events. In third, Jeannie Bartholomew added her first FLCPA PRO medal to her list of accomplishments along with her new records.

In the Intermediate Class, Richo Healy managed to hang on and secure the Gold medal. Silver went to Jesse Weyher, and hometown boy Alex Gubanov secured Bronze. For the beginners Jeremy George from Skydive Crosskeys took first followed by David Williams and Kevin Dice.
