What band did you stumble upon this year that blew you away?

My favorite was Langhorne Slim. I can’t believe I’d never heard him before, but he was incredible. So much fun. I saw him at the PureVolume House. During his last song he grabbed people one by one onto the stage and it was just a riot of clapping and singing and all around wonder.

I will be staying at the La Quinta Oltorf which is one of the wristband package hotels. there is a shuttle but it runs only once an hour, takes a break from 5 to 10 p.m. and appears to only have flat rate service instead of pay-per-trip. I checked out the city bus schedule which runs a bit more often. It looks like there is a night owl bus which would take you home once an hour. I’m not familiar with the area or the public transit. Would people recommend buying the $30 shuttle pass or just grabbing the city bus? Is the area around the hotel creepy late at night?

Is there any official or unofficial number on the entries expected? I’m just trying to get an idea of the odds.

Sidenote: I think this new system is ridiculous. The old way, tickets went to those who were most dedicated, the people willing to wait in line forever and take off of work to do so. This random drawing takes something away from the whole SXSW experience.

Come on guys, lets get this forum going, theres a hell of a lot of effort gone into giving us the opportunity to discuss all things SXSW...........so lets go! Who do you fancy? Whether it be bands you’ve seen before who are so good you just can’t miss in Austin,or maybe a band you’ve heard who you’re hoping to catch!

Me? Well from a UK perspective, out of those who have confirmed so far i would most definitely recommend Fanfarlo, obviously British Sea Power, The Indelicates are fantastic and Carlis Star from Manchester will impress a few. Other bands?Don’t miss The Happy Hollows and The Henry Clay People from Los Angeles, Cloud Cult are great and i’m so looking forward to catching The Cute Lepers (an offshoot of The Briefs). So thats me..........what about you? Oh, by the way ,this is my third consecutive trip across the pond and i can honestly say that those who have not been before..........................look out!!!!!

I’ve been coming to SxSW since ‘99 and as much as I love the excessive amounts of rockin’ and how the trip has shaped my music collection and taste forever, I also look forward to the food in Austin. I’m a huge fan of Mexican food, so I’m generally in Heaven the moment I show up. Every morning I go out for migas for breakfast. If you’ve never had migas, let me just tell you it is the food of the gods. Have a plate of migas for breakfast and you won’t even think about food until sometime early evening.
Some of my favorite spots include:
Angie’s (used to be right next to I-35 but has moved apparently). Get migas with cheese and make sure you get them with CORN tortillas. They’re like yummy little yellow sponges and make them better than most places.
Ciscos- I believe it’s on 7th, out past the highway (maybe 8th). Great place and amazing migas.
El Sol y La Luna- on So. Congress
Curras Grill- E. Oltorf-
DARIOS- 1800 East 6th- i have the address memorized b/c i have their calendar hanging in my kitchen. This is the place I spot at first upon getting my rental car. The house special that I have dreams of is the Green Chicken Enchiladas. Oh...I need a personal moment…

There’s thousands of great Mexican restaurants that I’m sure anyone could tell you about, these just happen to be my old standbys.

Texas Chili Parlor- 1409 Lavaca- the name says it all. If you want to put your heartbeat in jeopardy, try the Frito Chili Pie. Basically instead of a bread bowl, they encrust a bowl with a layer of Fritos, pour the chili on top and sprinkle a few more Fritos on top. GAME OVAH!

Hoovers Cooking- 2002 Manor Road. Easily my favorite non-Mexican restaurant in Austin. Home style Southern and Texas home cookin’ and BBQ. I usually get chicken friend chicken. Some of the best mac & cheese you’ve ever had and just flat out amazing all around. My friend got married in Austin and Hoovers catered it, did I already say GAME OVAH?

OK, now I’m starving and I’m sitting up here in Boston and have to wait. Pffft!

Captiva Records will be holding the 13th Annual Captiva Showcase on March 18-22 in Austin.

Bands from Australia to Columbia are set to take the stage at two different venues: The Troubadour Saloon and The Bayou. Concert-goers will find a variety of music to suit their tastes. Colombia’s Diva Gash brings in funky 80s and 70s style pop rock while UK born Lata Gouveia serenades in Americana style. Other bands playing the showcase include: South Central Skankers, Marashino, Simplistic Urge and The Beaumonts.

Chris Perez, CEO and President of Captiva Media Group/Captiva Records, has held unofficial showcases during SXSW since 1995. Indie and unsigned bands from across the U.S., U.K., Italy, Germany, Canada and Australia have graced the Captiva stages.

“We’re very excited about this year’s lineup and the broad range of genres which include rock, pop, Americana, ska, punk, metal and retro sounds,” Perez said. “We started out just doing single event day parties and now we control a venue on 6th Street for four days with over 70 performances.”

The showcases are free for ages 21+ and a $5 admission fee will be charged to those under 21. Bands are encouraged to check out the showcase and stick around for a chance to win 1,000 professionally replicated CDs donated by Duplium. Giveaways will be held throughout the weekend for those who attend the showcase on a first-come, first served basis.

Captiva Showcase is sponsored by Monster Energy Drink, The Ausin Turfcats, Newstreamz, Wienerschnitzel and Sam Ash Music.
