Aslanidis Sonic Network 8: Exhibition at Gallery 9

Since the 1990s, John Aslanidis has been exploring the relationship between sound and vision. In each painting, Aslanidis uses colour and line to create chromatic intensities that resemble the experience of listening to music. Aslanidis is interested in portraying an “optimistic vision”.

Aslanidis describes this new series of work as “sonic currents”. He explains: “This latest phase adds another level of complexity, and interactivity, between the intersecting patterns in the paintings. My intention is to create imagery with a sonic resonance where there is no start or end point. They capture a fragment of infinity and represent a sense of a perpetual change.”

Heavily influenced by the field of electronic music and its sub-genres including dub, minimal techno and hip hop, Aslandis was a member of Clan Analogue (a collective of electronic sound and visual artists) during the 1990s. He has achieved international recognition and has exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas including regular exhibitions in New York at Tobey Fine Art from 2001 to 2008.

Most recently John Aslanidis was included in Sight & Sound: Music & Abstraction in Australian Art at the Arts Centre, Melbourne. In 2011, he will undertake a 5-month residency in New York at the prestigious Location One. He will also exhibit twice in Berlin at dr. julius I ap. The first is a group show titled Constructive / Concrete / Multiple opening on 16 December 2010 running until February 2011. The second opens in October 2011 and is a collaboration with sound artist Brian May.

I have received a few comments/emails over the past month asking whether the blog will still continue or if its coming to an end....

Let me assure you its definitely NOT ending, merely been on a break, so to speak.

There is a ton of content waiting to posted and the weekly gig guides will continue but there will be quite a few changes on the blog in the coming weeks.

Thanks for everyone who has followed thus far, and please do not delete your feeds! More posts coming I promise!

Sasha's new Audio Visual Setup premiers at Big Day Out

Sasha, the name synonymous among hundreds of thousands of clubbers and one of the few original UK super-star DJs still making a name for himself showcased his new audio and visual setup right across Australia over the last month as part of the Big Day Out Festival, one of the most popular and prestiges Aussie festivals to play at.

The setting was the famous Boiler Room which had its birth in the huge empty warehouse of Homebush Bay (Sydney Olympic Venue area) but has hosted the whos who of electronic music over the last 7 years.

Working with a team from Montreal, responsible for some of the LED installations of Circus De' Sole, the setup was custom built with lots of smaller LED screens and special mountings which was specially shipped to Australia for the tour. Sasha has noted that the set-up was a response to the festival set where it can become a challenge to bring deeper sounds and creating an environment where people get into the groove of a set.

“I’ve always wanted to do something more, and do something different. I’m not the DJ who plays all the big anthem tunes …. What I want to do is have something that is separate from my club shows. So this festival set is gonna be an hour and a half long, the music is going to be linked to the visuals and it’s going to be a whole different experience." -taken from ITM Interview by Angy

The screens are placed behind and infront of Sasha, who is situated in the middle and sillouetted by the visuals around him. Visuals react to the music and it was tweaked through out the entire Big Day Out tour however Sasha noted on twitter, "...the visual show was tweaked as the tour went on and Perth got the best out of us"

With Sasha only recently playing a special open-air afternoon set in November at Chinese Laundry in Sydney, there were many rumors of Sasha living in Sydney over the summer and possibly playing another club show, however according to the man himself thats not true. "I know there were lots of rumors about me playing another gig in sydney but I am in oz for Big Day Out and having an amazing time.....I will be back very soon I hope. I love oz."

Still, the rumour mill must go on and I have being told by many that Sash Sydney Harbour cruise party is being tossed around...Lets hope it becomes a reality!

After a hectic weekend, seeing Trevor Jackson, Aireoplane and Yen at Hyde Park Barracks and ducking into the back of a Spanish club to check out Shit Robot the night after, I thought I would post up a some articles from couple of other places to complete the rainy Sunday afternoon here in Sydney. With Australia day around the corner and your sick day notice in for tomorrow, no doubt, I'm sure some reading is in order.

While talking with some friends over the weekend the notion of design and music seems to be more prevalent today then ever. Designers and musicians, especically electronic musicians, seem to go hand in hand. Whether its cover art, web site design, graphic design or even the live visuals associated with a DJ act its seems the visual component is a side that can be skilfully used to 'enhance' the music; show a different aspect or perspective. While many people, at first, may just see the swirling live visuals as some sort of way to further trip out drunken (alcohol or otherwise) people the visual component is as much a valid art form as the music itself and needs to be taken more seriously in my opinion.

Becks festival bar was graced with the edgy visuals of VJ Morph which in many ways perfectly complemented the edgier sounds of spaced out disco coming from the time-code vinyls of Trevor Jackson. While in the background saw visuals projected onto the old Sydney Barracks building of which some were designed by visual artist, Julapy. Check it out below, but much of his designs come from code, rather than sampled visuals.

Ghostly International is another electronic label known for some unique and defined visuals. Cover art or live much of it is directed and created by Michael Cina who's work extends far and beyond that of underground music labels. Have a read of the interview with him below to gain some insight into this much overlooked industry.

Back to music, I can safely say Trevor Jackson at Hyde Park Barracks last Friday pumped out some great house and new disco. Steering away from the obvious, going down the slightly gritty but keeping it lively it was a set that was happily lapped up by everyone. Have a read of Dr Tad's review below;

Sydney is brimming with activity. Summer is here and Sydney festival is adding an amazing array of events to the cities theaters and clubs. As I continue with my personal recommendations (if that means anything at all!?) this friday is the Future Classic night at the uber cool Becks Festival Bar, decked out only once a year for this famous event.

Trevor Jackson will headline after recently taking a break from touring over the last couple years with this being one of his first performances! Also on the bill are Areoplane, Yen (live) and future classic DJs.

This is the last becks festival event that isnt sold out so hurry and get your tickets as it will all go!

Trevor Jackson is known for his musical and visual innovation in electronic music. Founder of Output Recordings, he released Four Tet, LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. He has remixed Massive Attack, U2 and UNKLE and worked with The Gossip, Doves and Franz Ferdinand. Like his DJ Kicks mix, expect an uncompromising set traversing a vast sonic territory from nu-disco to rock and electro to house.

CO OP, easily one of the best new events of 09 returns for 2010 with Moodmusic head honcho Sasse aus Berlin! The Berlin underground man will be playing a 5 hour set at the Civic Underground so expect something along the lines of Vincenzo last time, which for all that was there was definitely a night to remember!

Sasse holds residences at two of Berlins most established clubs Berghain and Weekend club as and had produced remixes for the likes of Heinrik Schwarz, DJ T and Spirit Catcher. This will be undeniably DEEP!

Also joining the bill is Dave DK which is sure to turn some faces. The gig goes down 5th of Febuary and tickets are available at residentAdvisor.net

Dufire and Sven Vath Side Shows

Thats right! The famous duo will be playing a special side show ahead of their Future Music Festival tour date in Sydney, which has now sold out. Sven is known for his hedonistic performances with last year having skulled an entire bottle of champange only to spit it back out on the audience (is that an insult or compliment?).

Certain people may remember Future Entertainment running their first 'Likes Of You' event at the exact same venue as this side show. Lets hope this time around there wont be any sound issues like last time, issues that eventually cause Loco Dice to walk off stage early....

Top Notch Sets; Mattt & Tomas

Last month saw Top Notch rooftop party debut on the Home roof terrace with some very speical local and international guests. Luckily sydneylovestechno was there to record the action and I'll be releasing some of the sets over the next couple of weeks.

To kick things off with the first set post of 2010 below is a set from local duo Mattt and Tomas who played early in the afternoon. Dishing out their mixed style of funky, bassy tech-house and some lighter techno tunes for the afternoon the two young-guns have firmly established themselves in the techno DJ scene in Sydney, holding a residency at Chinese Laundry, where you can often catch Mattt on warmup/closing duties, as well as playing numerous times at Spice and Bunker. Perhaps one of more well known names in techno for their age group in Sydney, their sets are often grounded around more techno and house rhythms rather than prog-house like many of their older counterparts. 2010! The start of a new decade, the start of a new year and the start of the first weekend. If this weekend is anything to go by, then 2010 will definitely be a great year for house and techno in Sydney. If your lucky enough to not work on Fridays then it starts TONIGHT with Danny Tenaglia dropping by Nevermind for a special 6hr set after performing for a massive crowd on Bondi Beach during NYE.

Friday its definitely the local touch with Symmetry at the Cave then Sunday sees some big artists grace both afterhours parties Spice and Bunker.

Of course theres also festival First Night this Saturday, the biggest free event in Australia, with a whole range of artists from all over the world performing. Definitely not to be missed.

Sydney Festival is one of Australia's premier cultural festivals with so many different events across the spectrum its pretty much impossible to see it all.

I'm going to be picking out some of the highlights of the festival over the next few weeks that I think music heads and blog readers a like would find more interesting but by all means do have a flip through the free brochures that are around the city.

Perhaps one of the more interesting performances on the music side of things is the collaboration with Modular records, a company that has been establishing themselves as one of the leading record labels for promoting Aussie talent on global scale, while pushing music that still retains some originality and creativity (although I wont say that applies to all their artist roster...). The talks will explore the early days of Sydney's music scene and early experimental music labels.

From 1979 to 1985, parish halls, abandoned warehouses and run down apartments rumbled and screeched with new sounds during one of the most creative periods in Australia’s music history.

Avant garde, post-punk, new wave and early electronic styles of music cultivated a thriving underground scene, heard on Sydney-based labels M Squared and Volition. It was a period when ‘little bands’, such as Pel Mel, SPK, Voigt/465 and Laughing Clowns were more concerned with artistic expression and experimentation than commercial success.

Circa 1979: Signal to Noise is a celebration of this unique and influential period.

Henrik Schwarz (live), Mortor City Drum Ensemble and Reboot at Rooftop Parties

The last couple of weekends the techno and house scene of Sydney have been an absolute hive of activity. With International guests dropping in, it seems, every day there has be countless parties, encore performances and secret afterhours. Here is a selection of some of videos and photos of the artists I took, feel free to use them for personal use but you must email the blog for any commercial uses (ie posters/promo material).

Henrik Schwarz live highlights video. The future classic birthday bash was a great success with a packed civic floor keenly waiting upon Henrik. Once he started, the energy never let up with pounding re-edit, remix and original one after another in a style akin to Henrik live. Saving some of his more well known material too last, it definitely was one set that will stay in the minds of many for a while. Housey, funky, with that techno drive, it really did strike a chord with everyone in the room and theres no better proof then when the artist opts to play for an extra HOUR! Of course no one complained...

Reboot and Emerson, visiting our sunny shores after relocating to Europe, headlined the Top Notch Rooftop parties. Suuny, steamy Sydney afternoon on top of the famous Home night club next to Darling Harbour really set the scene for a afternoon well spent. Luckily this blog has the sets so stay tuned for streaming sets from the artists soon.

Motor City Drum Ensemble played an intimate gig, 2 if you count his afterhours appearance, to only a couple of hundred punters down in the Vault. Apart from some vinyl issues (apparently got locked in a hotel room!) he played a great 4 hour set that had the room heaving in and out. Granted he could only play off his CDs it was still a great set the featured some serious deepness.

Every Monday from 6-8pm well respected local DJ Simon Caldwell does the rounds on fbi radio here in Sydney. Presenting some of the freshest and most original material in dance and electronic music its considered to be one of the best radio shows of its type.

Also, it seems, Mr Caldwells reputation has been spreading further and wider recently mixing a RA podcast which you can stream below. This weekend is an absolute killer with many lining up the events as the warm weather takes hold forcing everyone to go out and have a good time...

If your looking for that non-stop party bus, Friday sees Future Classics Party (see previous post) which will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the year. More local or smaller? The Box and Picnic will provide.

Next hit up the sun shine with a roof party of Top Notch (again, check prev. posts). Emerson Todd, and other great locals provide the tunes with Reboot playing an afternoon set before heading off the Lady Lux for another performance. Also on the Agenda DJ T will be heading the Cave in Chinese Laundry while Bug In THe Bass hosts Deepchild.

For those who cant stop, Tom Clark and Daniel Dreier will be hosting Bunker afterhours party while Jay Shepeard will be playing at Spice. Also watch out for Sun afternoon Apres session as just maybe someone big will drop in (although thats unconfirmed!).

Future Classic 5th Birday Bash

Future Classic are one of the leading electronic focused music labels in Sydney and Australia, also a blog favourite, but tomorrow night they will be celebrating 5 years of music, parties, design and the local and internationals artists that have catapulted the label which is now recognised all around the world.

Joining the celebration will be Inversions man Henrik Schwarz who's live sets are stuff of legends. Although I personally have never seen him live, I have been told numerous times by friends and press that it is always something special! Using his laptop he creates organic and complex live sets often combing new and old material. Musically, he is one of the most creative artist in dance music today having a wealth of original material and remixes for artists like Carl Craig, Underworld, Bookashade and DJ hell among many others. An highly rated artist that will be performing live. Definitely one not to miss.

Also on the bill is Chateau Flight from Paris which consists of Parisian DJ/producers Gilb'r and Nicholas Chaix (I:Cube). With careers spanning back to the nineties both are synonymous with the Paris underground scene having set up the Versatile record label in 1996 which featured one of Daft Punks very first remixes as well as producing advant-pop with members of French group Air and Depeche Mode. There appearance tomorrow have a lot of people excited.

Also on the local side we have some of Australias' and Sydneys best, a line up thats actually deserving in its self! Jamie Loyd recently released an excellent album after an Australian tour which has many people talking. Deepchild who is back from a recent tour all around the world and has a wealth of new songs out now, will be gracing the decks and no doubt both will be playing some of their latest material. Also joining them will be Nathan Mclay, Jimi Polar, Peret Mako, Loin Brothers, Simon Caldwell, Bryan O'Callagan, Mike Redfern and The Scientist.

Top Notch Rooftop party series continues with its second instalment, this time featuring ex Sydney man Emerson Todd visiting from Europa as well as one massive international who I can not name but will definitely surprise and delight many! Locals will include Robbie Lowe, Matt and Tomas, Trinity, Dave Stuart and more . As for the international I will say he is bit of the techno man-of-the-moment....

Q:For those who haven't heard of the Top Notch rooftop parties, explain a little about what inspired you to put them on and the location of the party.

The Sydney clubbing scene is very much all similar with its dark and dingy little clubs pumping out heavy tech house and techno, so we looked to create something a little different to spice up the Sydney clubbing culture. We wanted to put the focus on daytime entertainment with the main draw card being the sun. In essence we wanted to create a bit of the Ibiza daytime parties right here in Sydney. We have created a party like no one else's, having some of the best in Local and International Dj's in some of Sydney's hottest sun filled venue's.

Q:I hear there is a rather large international headlining alongside Emerson Todd, can we get the first scoop?

The International head liner with be released to the public on Monday 7th of December!

UPDATE: Reboot will be playing this Saturday for an afternoon set under the Sydney sun.

Q: Will there be more Top Notch parties in the future? And any hints as to who may be playing?

TOP NOTCH will be running once a month and will be having its residency at Home Rooftop for the foreseeable future. All monthly parties will feature massive international head liners alongside some of Australia's best local talent!
