DUBLIN, IRELAND–(Marketwired – Sep 14, 2015) – Mobiliya Edvelop, a leading digital classroom platform with 1,800+ institutes as customers, has launched a virtual bag feature on its LMS platform. The virtual bag will replace the school bags that the children carry to school on their shoulders and gives access to curriculum text books on the Mobiliya Edvelop platform. The virtual bag allows the student to access textbooks and bookmark, annotate, highlight and doodle over the text books. The students can also make side notes on each page.

Mobiliya Edvelop, an advanced digital classroom platform, is set to transform learning as we know today. Designed to make education more personalised and engaging, Mobiliya Edvelop offers all the tools that students and teachers need in one unified dashboard — virtual classrooms, tests, assignments, discussion board among several others. Mobiliya Edvelop seamlessly blends a bouquet of learning features — live lectures, assignments, tests, report cards and library, making it a comprehensive learning platform.

School Bag Inside Your Education Tablets

The virtual bag feature of Mobiliya Edvelop is practically a replacement for a school bag. It offers key benefits to all the stakeholders — students, teachers and content publishers, making it ideal for even those schools where internet connectivity is intermittent.

Benefits for Students:

Access to curriculum textbooks on device of their choice.

Can weekly reveal new content even in an offline mode — a puzzle or a crossword can be activated each Monday by the teacher.

Students no longer need to bear the weight of heavy school bags stuffed with text books and note books.

Works in an offline mode, wherein, the content is encrypted and stored on the device. Thus, even with no internet access, students can access all the content from anywhere anytime.

Benefits for Teachers:

Highlight-Annotate-Share feature allows teachers to instantly make and share notes for every chapter/section.

Teachers can also attach additional reference materials (text/video/PPTs) with every chapter and share with students, making learning much more interactive and engaging.

Allows uniformity of content and reduces redundancy or duplication of work. Teachers can share same content across schools and locations.

Benefits for Content Publishers:

Be it a tablet, smartphone, laptop or a desktop, Mobiliya Edvelop offers a uniform user experience and functionalities, making it a device agnostic proposition.

Since the books are encrypted, there is no threat of any copyright infringement or violation.

Any change in syllabus would allow publishers to simply edit the books by adding/deleting chapters instead of re-publishing the books all over again, saving huge costs and resources.

Krish Kupathil, CEO of Mobiliya Technologies, adds, “In our various discussions with government officials, teachers and parents a common theme that came out was to reduce the weight of the schoolbag for the student. In some geographies there are government notices that have been delivered to reduce the weight that the student carries every day to school. With a virtual bag feature on Mobiliya Edvelop — a student can access text books at the touch of a button. More so, we have integrated with DRM platform to encrypt the text books to each user giving comfort to the publishers. The feature has been rolled out to 14,000+ students over the last couple of month and we are working with school authorities and publishers to roll it out to all our customer base.”

Mobiliya Edvelop is partnered with Microsoft and powered by Microsoft Office 365. With a growing customer base and users in India, China and North America, the platform brings together all features required for teaching and learning and can be accessed from a tablet, mobile or web.

Downlink Multi-User Superposition Transmission (MUST) for transmission of more than one data layer to multiple users without time, frequency or spatial separation

Support for dual band Uplink (UL) Carrier Aggregation

Enhancements for reducing control channel overhead

Other network-related services are also summarized in the paper, including:

Vicki Livingston, Head of Communications at 4G Americas noted, “As work on 3GPP Rel-13 continues to develop the standards for HSPA+ and LTE/LTE-Advanced, simultaneous discussion on future network requirements and recommendations for the next generation of 5G technologies has begun. Groups such as 4G Americas are contributing to the discussion and are liaising with other organizations such as NGMN Alliance, 3GPP, 5G PPP, ITU, CITEL, ATIS, Small Cell Forum and others. It is expected that discussions in the 3GPP working groups will turn to 5G standardization in Rel-14.”

Zenfone Zoom - a sideways glance at different cameraphone tech

<p>Anyone who's a fan of the Nokia 808 PureView and Lumia 1020 will have been all too aware that, despite camera capabilities rising across the phone world in 2014 and 2015, we still don't have a camera-centric smartphone in the same vein as the Nokia pair. Is the new Asus Zenfone Zoom, from the world of Android, a possibility? Claiming 3x optical zoom it certainly looks the part, though it has yet to be tested in the wild by <em>anyone</em>. This Link Of Interest is over to CoolSmartphone, where Garry Clark got his hands on the hardware at least, at IFA 2015. Oh, and 1020 users, you might err... recognise the external design on the back!</p>

Rebtel Says International Calling Barriers – What? Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That! Then Hands Us The Only REAL Unlimited Calling to India via App – Company Unveils Lowest Unlimited Calling to India Rates Found Anywhere, at only $8.00 a Month

New York, NY (August 5th, 2015) – Rebtel, (http://www.rebtel.com), has thrown down the gauntlet and officially made a play for the telecom throne this month with the release of the only REAL Unlimited Calling to India Plan, costing just $8.00 a month, with the first month free. “So what,” you say? Unlimited plans have been announced before? No Biggie. Well, surprisingly enough the dirty truth is no they have not. Not an actual app or plan that offers true unlimited calling to India without insanely deceptive hidden fees, minute overages, and deviously hidden costs. According to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and the CIA there are an estimated 3,443,063 Indian Americans living within the United States and 1,250,000,000 worldwide that are being terribly ripped off by both calling cards and competitors. That’s an insanely large number. In response to this, Rebtel is not holding back releasing the Unlimited Calling to India offer via their iPhone and Android apps.

Varun Atrey, US Marketing Manager says “At Rebtel, we do things differently. Most of our competitors treat their customers as silly immigrants that can’t read the fine print. Our customers are a different type of user and breed. They are the budget conscious Rebels who do things like pass up medical school to launch a tech company, date adventurously on Tinder, and have an unyielding curiosity and zest for life. They are the positive realists, the ones who sing it all out loud, obsessive online shoppers, the charging bulls in the proverbial china shop.”

So just how is Rebtel able to provide an Unlimited Calling Plan to India that just won’t quit? Well, the process is simpler than anyone could imagine. Let’s say that Manish, an artist in San Francisco, wants to call his mother, living in India, to give her the daily update that she so vehemently requests. Rather than making an international call using his mobile operator (let’s say, Verizon), that will cause him to pay an expensive rate per minute, Manish can simply visit Rebtel.com, buy the unlimited plan and download the app. Easy peasy. Manish is now able to save a fortune on international calling, while keeping in regular touch with his loved ones overseas.

“Who wants to lose those connections due to cost concerns? It’s insanity and an unnecessary evil that we are about to zap out. The Indian community does not want hidden charges.” continues Atrey, “They want to connect when they want, and where they want. They want value and we are handing it to them and saying this belongs to you.”

Want to hit up and get additional deets on Rebtels Unlimited Calling to India plan or connect for media purposes, email eosborn@beautifulplanning.com or call 1.877.841.7244. To download the app visit: www.rebtel.com/indiaunlimited.

ABOUT REBTEL

From its beginnings as a plucky start-up intent on disrupting the telecom industry to its present day status as one of the most successful digital international calling companies in the world, Rebtel has always remained true to its vision of providing user friendly, cheap, and high quality communication to immigrant communities across the globe. Rebtel was founded in 2006 and is a profitable company with a turnover of $95 million in 2014. Rebtel is headquartered in Stockholm with team members across the globe.

“DENSO terminals already lead the market in quality, durability and reliability, and with the new pricing, DENSO is positioned as the best value in the industry,” said David Keller, business manager of DENSO ADC, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of mobile data capture systems and the Americas’ sales arm of DENSO Wave Inc., inventor of the QR Code®.

As before, installation, service, software upgrades and a no-cost three-year limited extended warranty with registration that exceeds the industry standard are included. Under the new pricing, the total cost of ownership is a better investment than ever.

“We offer the extended warranty at no additional cost because the failure rate of our terminals is so low,” Keller said. “Less reliable alternatives are likely to cost customers up to 20 percent of the purchase price in repairs alone. Lost productivity increases that cost.”

DENSO’s new pricing is available on the BHT-1100BWB-CE series models, with or without the camera function, and the BHT-1200 CE 1D and 2D models. All four terminals are popular models in warehousing, logistics and retail operations, especially in some of the Asia-Pacific region where DENSO holds 70 percent of the barcode terminal market share.

Standard features on all four models include:

High-speed efficiency and advanced Wi-Fi communications systems: DENSO terminals connect easily to existing computer networks and incorporate DENSO’s Advanced Scan Plus™ CCD technology to perform almost three times faster than conventional laser scanners. Fast, reliable wireless communication supports the latest IEEE802.11b/g/n standards.

Operational ease in a compact, ergonomic design:Lightweight terminals include an easy-to-read, 3.5-inch HVGA color display screen with a large keyboard and a slim, comfortable grip for convenient one-handed operation. Models also offer floor-to-ceiling scanning from a distance of up to 25 feet, reducing the need for ladders and improving workplace safety.

SAN FRANCISCO — September 9, 2015 — Apple® today announced the all-new Apple TV®, bringing a revolutionary experience to the living room based on apps built for the television. Apps on Apple TV let you choose what to watch and when you watch it.The new Apple TV’s remote features Siri®, so you can search with your voice for TV shows and movies across multiple content providers simultaneously.

The all-new Apple TV is built from the ground up with a new generation of high-performance hardware and introduces an intuitive and fun user interface using the Siri Remote™. Apple TV runs the all-new tvOS™ operating system, based on Apple’s iOS, enabling millions of iOS developers to create innovative new apps and games specifically for Apple TV and deliver them directly to users through the new Apple TV App Store™.

“There has been so much innovation in entertainment and programming through iOS apps, we want to bring that same excitement to the television,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Apps make the TV experience even more compelling for viewers and we think apps represent the future of TV.”

The new Siri Remote dramatically simplifies how you select, scroll and navigate through your favorite content while bringing unique interactivity to the new Apple TV by using a glass touch surface that handles both small, accurate movements as well as big, sweeping ones. Adding touch to Apple TV creates a natural, connected experience, even if the TV screen is on the other side of the room. Developers can take advantage of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and the touch surface on the Siri Remote to create games and other app experiences that have never been seen on TV before.

With Siri, you can use your voice to search TV shows and movies by title, genre, cast, crew, rating or popularity, making it easy to say things like “Show me New Girl,” “Find the best funny movies from the ‘80s,” “Find movies with Jason Bateman” and “Find popular TV shows for kids.” Apple TV will search iTunes® and popular apps from Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, displaying all the ways the resulting TV shows and movies can be played. Siri also offers playback control and on-screen navigation, as well as quick access to sports, stock and weather information.*

tvOS is the new operating system for Apple TV, and the tvOS SDK provides tools and APIs for developers to create amazing experiences for the living room the same way they created a global app phenomenon for iPhone® and iPad®. The new, more powerful Apple TV features the Apple-designed A8 chip for even better performance so developers can build engaging games and custom content apps for the TV. tvOS supports key iOS technologies including Metal™, for detailed graphics, complex visual effects and Game Center, to play and share games with friends.

Pricing & Availability
The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October starting at $149 (US) for a 32GB model and $199 (US) for a 64GB model from Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. A new Xcode® beta is available for developers today that includes the tvOS SDK at developer.apple.com/xcode/downloads. Developers can request an Apple TV developer kit at developer.apple.com/tvos/.

*Siri availability and functionality varies by country. Subscription required for some content.

Apple revolutionized personal technology with the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984. Today, Apple leads the world in innovation with iPhone, iPad, the Mac and Apple Watch. Apple’s three software platforms — iOS, OS X and watchOS — provide seamless experiences across all Apple devices and empower people with breakthrough services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay and iCloud. Apple’s 100,000 employees are dedicated to making the best products on earth, and to leaving the world better than we found it.

<p>I was interested to see Sony announce the Xperia Z5's new 23MP (ish) camera as "the best camera in a leading smartphone*". The presence of an asterisk should alert you to the fact that Sony has been flexible with its wording here. A few thoughts below...</p>

How to get location favourites from Nokia Maps to Microsoft Maps

<p>Guest author Massis Sirapian takes mapping fans of a geeky nature through the process of getting Nokia Maps favourites on a Symbian smartphone to Microsoft Maps on a desktop (Windows 8.1 or 10) - and thence to Windows 10 Mobile potentially, of course. Note that I haven't tried any of this, so I'll refer you to <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/Massis_">Massis on Twitter</a> if you get stuck!!</p>

<p>The search has been on for several years for a replacement for the (now no longer produced) <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/reviews/item/15530_Proporta_TurboCharger_Pocket_P.php">Proporta Pocket Power</a>, an all in one, no cables needed, truly credit card sized emergency charger - and, right up at the premium end of the market we now have a candidate, offering full 2A output and able to deliver around 700mAh at 5V in about 20 minutes. While only around a one third charge for today's smartphones, that this fits unobtrusively in your wallet in a card slot makes this a terrific (if slightly pricey) accessory to get you to the end of a long day. Coming in deluxe packaging, with extras, it's also just about the perfect gift for a smartphone owner, as I explore below.</p>

<p>9GAG is a renowned source of funny, ironic and pointed graphics, GIFs and jokes - and now it's available on Symbian, thanks to a new third party client, GagBook. It's not a 100% fill rate for GIFs because of RAM limitations, but most if it worked fine. See the screenshots and links below.</p>

Exploring the Megapixel myth: 2015 Edition - finding the sweet spot

<p>There's a sweet spot for everything, whether it's the quantity of beer you buy in one go (e.g. a 'pint'), the number of children your family has (2, in the West, allegedly!)&nbsp;or, indeed, the number of megapixels in your captured photos. There will always be exceptions and regional variations, but taking the megapixel example in the context of camera phones, the tech world is now moving into uncharted areas of what I've often called the 'megapixel myth'. From this point onwards, it's mainly pain and little gain, I contend, unless manufacturers start to do cleverer things <em>with</em> all those pixels, in the manner of PureView classics like the 808 and 1020...</p>

How to set up a new mailbox in 2015 on Symbian/S60

<p>One of the elements of the Symbian 'experience' that broke recently was the email set-up process, with the shutting down of Nokia's email configuration server. Effectively, if a new user (or an existing Symbian user re-setting up an old device after a reset) tried to set up a new mailbox then only Exchange was offered - if your email host only offered IMAP4 or POP3 then you're now out of luck. It's disappointing that this was turned off before the original '2016' deadline for support, but hey, I've been pointed to a workaround that can be used without relying on external configurators.</p>

<p>Don't panic - Nokia has been looking to get rid of its HERE teams for a while, and the nightmare scenario was that HERE would be swallowed up by, for example, someone like Apple, leading to possible disruptions to the flow of map data updates. Happily, HERE has now been sold to&nbsp;a consortium of German carmakers - Audi, BMW and Daimler and there's no reason why business, for smartphone users, shouldn't carry on as usual.</p>

<p>Even if you do the usual 3.7V/5V maths to calculate the actual power available at the voltage your smartphone needs it (i.e. the 5V level), you still end up with well over 15,000mAh of useable charge from this new 'Executive' power bank. Add in a unique backlit LED readout, triple output jacks and a torch function and you've got a really, <em>really</em> interesting mobile accessory.</p>

And no, we still don't have anything decent from 2014 or 2015 as yet. Maybe N8, 808 and 1020 owners just form a self-selecting group that's being totally ignored by manufacturers? And, with some notes from Andy, you too might want to go 'red'...</p>

<p>In this specific group test. I look at capturing high decibel music on a variety of new and classic smartphone cameras, four of which also have OIS to help keep the picture steady too. Add in low light conditions and a dozen factors trying to throw auto-focus out and you have the recipe for a decent multi-device group test. In the ring here were the Nokia 808 PureView, Lumia 1020, Lumia 930, Microsoft 640 XL, Google Nexus 6 and LG G4. Four of the six have OIS, at least three have HAAC microphones, and one has hardware oversampling per frame in real time. Game on!</p>

Google has confirmed that they will no longer be supplying updates or software patches for so called &#8216;legacy&#8217; versions of their Android operating system. Looking at this internet casino, we can see a consistent growth, which is very interesting and worth is absolutely view. If you look at the Home very well, we will see in the upcoming of online playing, which the Online world is, after all, very critical.

EnergyCasino as currently brought up is not an common Casino. On the contrary, we have here a quite modern casino, which can present access to great online games. This is due to sign the contract in 2014 with this sort of big companies creating the best software program for games, like Microgaming and Netent. These two companies have created the best gambling on the Internet, usually opierane on a very pricey licenses, so you can easily now play games such as South Park.

Another issue is the overall look of the Casino, which is quite modern and very classy. At the Casino, we will be able to without having the slightest problem twig in the Casino, which is here no trouble. On the differing, it is very straightforward due to the fact that we can use modern day interface, which has only one year, since he has also been refreshed in the last, 2014. An more plus are the designs, and part EnergyCasino Girls which complete this House even more luster and a very great visual appeal.

If you like free bonuses and additional bonuses at the Casino, also we will not be let down by exactly what we find in his casino. The Casino offers bonuses irregardless of our region and our origins. Of course, the bonuses are altered to rates and currencies in each country so that they can be appealing for each state. One bonus is a bonus does not need from us a deposit, while the second is one that will allow us to get a dual for making a donation from our website. This is an additional signal that the gamers have what to choose when it will come to bonuses and can equally play for free with no the need for a first deposit, and can effortlessly make a large donation of money and double it completely for free!

Casino security EnergyCasino is identified by us at the end of the case, but it is surely in no context, worse than other casinos accessible on the market. Casino EnergyCasino on modern options in the field of safety, so that its consumers can feel safe. Of course stnadardy that today have the most powerful casinos in the world are preserved, so despite the fact that it is a new online casino, is not more serious in this regard than their competitors.

To Sum Up. For us the description of the EnergyCasino is essential through this point, which this is a new Casino and tiny known. However, we have seen about his quite a few pluses!, which is why this type of review is the most suitable, so that we understand that sometimes it is good to take benefit of the lesser-known brands, to go out for the better. On the Online world it is to describe your experience and to help others find the middle ground.

It has almost become an accepted fact that Eseries devices from Nokia have better build quality than their Nseries siblings, for a long time I thought so too. However, for the good or the bad, that belief of mine has been shattered. Eseries devices have disappointed too and that leads me to this post.

In the last two month or so I or my friends have picked up three Nokia E90’s and two N82’s and what is bad is that all but one have had some problem or the other.

E90

I’ll start with the E90’s – Above is a almost new E90 that has been treated like a baby, literally. Yet, within one week of usage that is what I have, and believe me this is one reason I don’t want to use this phone again. The D pad looks battered for no reason at all. Moreover the device creaks like anything, the sides and even the battery cover is a little loose. Pure disgust. Moreover since this is a cosmetic defect, Nokia won’t cover it in the warranty.

The above was the story of the Mocha variant. This is the part where two of my friends got the latest Black E90 with the revamped keyboard. To their disgust, the thing still creaks – right out of the box. If that wasn’t enough, within two weeks both phones lost their inner screens i.e. some connector inside messed up and on opening the phone all they would get was a blank screen or some flicker.

So we went to the Nokia Service Center, which Nokia fortunately has quite a few of here in Chandigarh, India. What did they tell us? Please come back after seven days and we’ll have your phones fixed. SEVEN days? We made some enquiries and found out that almost a hundred E90’s in the region have had that fault and are awaiting repair.

Now is this a problem with a batch of phones that came out of China or something that bothers most black E90’s – I don’t know. The point is it shouldn’t be happening. Not with Nokia most expensive device if we take the 88XX luxury series out.

N82

Moving back to the Nseries. This is an N82 which is barely a week old. Right from the first day it had something which looked like a dead pixel, but with time another friend found out that it wasn’t so dead, in fact it was growing by the day. The Nokia Service centers (all 4 of them in the city) did not have an replacement screen at hand and again put in the SEVEN day waiting period. Seriously, replacing the screen takes under ten minutes. Lastly, the N78 I have, has a piece of paper tucked between the battery and the cover to prevent creaks.

What bothers me the most is that all of these are high end handsets for which the customer pays a premium, yet he still gets the bad end of the bargain. A 800$ plus phone which creaks, has light coming out from under the screen and can’t last two weeks while it is being treated with the utmost care? I won’t want one, no matter what the features are.

Nokia, if I sum it up, you have three devices that have build quality issues out of a grand total of four. Is that where you’d like to be headed? My experience could have been a fluke but I doubt it. Something is surely amiss and its high time you fixed it.

I’m sure quite a few of you would have had such issues, feel free to share.

To celebrate, the Ovi Daily App blog is having a ’scavenger hunt’ in which you can win yourself one. If you are not in the Unites States and your hunt bears fruit, you will be entitled on a Nokia E72, a device I love.

The ‘Scavenger Hunt’ started on June 3rd and will end on June 16, the day the ‘Mode’ launches in the US. In order to enter the competition, you need to answer a total of ten questions that are being put up each day on this page. You will also need a Ovi Mail account to email the answers to NokiaE73Mode@ovi.com. If you don’t have one, sign up now as using an Ovi account is mandatory.

Don’t worry that you are late, you can still catch up on the previous 5 questions and submit your answers. The important thing is that you answer all the 10 questions correctly. Judging by what I’ve seen so far, it shouldn’t be too hard and the guys at the Ovi Daily App blog are generous with hints too.

On a related note, you must see the E73 video that Nokia’s come up with, its one of their best.

You can also follow @ovidailyapp on Twitter for the latest questions, hints and reminders about the contest. Good luck!

I have been using the Nokia E75 as my primary device for a few days now and before bringing you the full review, I want to share ten things that I instantly liked about the E75. I will be following this piece up with things that I do not like about the E75, so make sure you check back in for the complete picture.

Build Quality: The build quality on this thing is phenomenal. There are zero creaks, the slide is smooth, no play anywhere and the device just feels one solid monoblock. A person who’s new to the E75 won’t come to know that the QWERTY slides out as well, that solid.

3.5mm Jack: This makes a huge difference in the music quality on the E75. It is now upto the mid range Nseries level. The radio features both the Visual Radio for FM and the Internet radio. The FM quality is way better, the E71 or the E90 even with the 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter plugged in came no where close.

Camera: The camera software is now a copy of the one found in the Nseries and I’m glad Nokia have not held back features like Geo-Tagging and LED support for video just because this was an ‘Eseries’.

Email: The Nokia E75 incorporates the Nokia Messaging like layout within the messaging client and its setup is a breeze. The part I liked was that it handles Google Apps email accounts seamlessly as well. The one thing I’d like to get rid off are those transitions, it makes the client much slower or perhaps tries to hide its slowness. Either way, this must be worked upon.

Keyboard: When I first saw the E75 I wasn’t too impressed with its flat keyboard, however after using it for a few days I like it. The feedback from a press of a key is definite and the speeds I can achieve are pretty reasonable as well. This is without much practice, with time I’m sure this will improve further.

Speed: To be honest, I’ve never really liked FP2 much just because I’ve always felt that it was much slower as compared to its predecessor. The FP2 on this Eseries doesn’t seem to suffer from this and I have found the E75 to be pretty snappy, not E71 fast but fast enough for the other FP2 benefits to weigh in.

MicroSD & MicroUSB Flaps: The flaps on the microSD and USB slots now have a special opening on their sides for the fingernail so that they can be opened easily. This is a pretty small thing, but goes a long way in the overall experience.

Charging: The E75 supports charging from BOTH the propriety Nokia charger as well as USB and this is the way it should be. Insanely convenient. On the N85 they just had USB charging and I had a pretty bad time when I would forget the charger at home.

Standby Screen Dialing: The standby screen dialing, introduced on the E71, allows you to bring up a contact right on the standby screen by simply typing in his/her name. You then have the options to make a call, send a text and so on. Incredibly convenient and I’m glad it found its way on the E75 as well.

Gallery: Nokia have done a commendable job briging the old 6680/6630 gallery back. The ‘Songs’ no longer opens the music player, it just lists whatever tracks I have. The images and videos are now listed separately as well. The thumbnail generation is also pretty quick. Check out these screenshots below for a better idea.

Following on from the walkthrough of N97′s onscreen widgets, (including Facebook) and the free RAM, this post should hopefully help lessen the anxiety a little bit by showcasing a little more of the software side of the N97.

First up are a few observations I want to share with you:

The first thing is that the N97 will not feature the touch FULL QWERTY or MINI QWERTY keyboard options that we saw on the 5800 Xpress Music. The Alphanumeric mode and the handwriting recognition will be the only two writing modes available apart from the hardware QWERTY. I personally am not too bothered by this as I prefer the alphanumeric for touch based typing anyway. If required, Nokia can always bring this back via a firmware update.

One thing that I like is the way the browser automatically switches to the full screen mode after the page is loaded and when there is no need to see the progress bar. This implementation is similar to the one we was on the N85 and recently the E75 as well. Screenshots below in the browser section.

The next is a entry in the settings menu entitled ‘Default Applications‘ (Screenshot). I am not sure how it works, but from the looks of things this should allow the user to select a default application for a particular task. For example, set Core Player as the default for playing video. (Note: Core Player support for S60 5th Edition is coming in Core Player v2, which should be out by the time the N97 hits markets around the world)

The settings menu is now much better organised and finding the setting you are looking for is much easier. Have a look for yourself in the settings screenshot walkthrough below.

THE SETTINGS MENU SCREENSHOT SECTION

As you can see, the menu is pretty straightforward, similar to the one of the 5800. The one thing that I liked here was that the settings for the widgets aren’t found here, they are exclusively controlled via the standby screen. This makes for much lesser clutter.

THE WEB BROWSER SCREENSHOT SECTION

You can see the alphanumeric keyboard in action, the auto complete option at work and the automatic switching to the full screen mode after the website loads.

THE EMAIL SETUP SCREENSHOT SECTION

Pretty straightforward again, a little more information and the addition of the option of using Ovi mail. The Nokia Messaging link was still not there. This is firmware v10.

THE PhoNetInfo SCREENSHOT SECTION

Nothing much to see here as all most of the details about the N97′s processor, RAM and so on are already out. But if you, like me, enjoy looking at every minuscule detail of a device first hand even if you know of it earlier, the screenshots below are for you.

Lastly as a something of a bonus link from Stefan, I would like to share with you very first pictures of the stylus that would be shipping with the N97. The pictures come from Eldar’s review of the N97. I never thought the stylus would be such, but I’d have to say it doesn’t look bad at all.

Nokia’s most awaited device of the summer, the N97 has been reviewed by Eldar of Mobile-Review. Sadly the extensive review is written in Russian, so those of you who know the language can jump right in. The good news for the rest of us is that with Google Translate it does become quite readable. But if you can wait, a English version should be out in a few days.

The review covers aspects like positioning, design, size, controls, display, keyboard, battery, music ability and software features of Nokia N97, finally concluding with his own impressions. The review has some interesting tidbits like the possibility to of a Linux based Communicator, talk about the Nokia 5900 and so on. Also present are comparison shots with a multitude of other QWERTY and Nokia devices. Here are a few highlights:

BUILD QUALITY: Good, hinges despite being plastic will survive if you take reasonable care.

MUSIC QUALITY: Excellent, probably the best. Better than the Nokia 5800 because of a separate chip. Loudspeakers similar. Music playback time of 30+ hours.

CAMERA: Review has loads of sample images and three videos available for download.

BATTERY: Takes 2.5 hours to charge completely and can last for 4 days on moderate usage. Heavy users can expect 1 day. If the widgets aren’t fetching data continuously, the battery life increases by 20-25%.

GPS Navigation – 5 hours

Video Playback – 4 hours 15 minutes

WEB-surfing (EDGE-connection) – 4.5 hours

Listening to music via headphones – 32 hours

WiFi – 166 hours in standby mode, with continuous data transmission – 6 hours

DATA TRANSFER: Speeds of 5MB/s via USB, Bluetooth is the usual 100 KBPS.

The venerable E71 has been the inspiration behind Nokia upcoming messaging device, the E55 which also holds the honor of being the slimmest smartphone from the Finnish manufacturer. It packs in quite a few never seen before goodies, like N-Gage and FP2 as far as the Eseries goes, but the question on my mind is that despite being more of a successor to the E51, does it have the capability of replacing my trusty E71.

As a blogger I often have the good fortune of playing with a lot of new devices and at times having in a possession quite a few of them at one time. I make it a point to use a smartphone myself for at least two weeks before reviewing it, however I have found myself coming back to the E71 again and again after the said period is over.

But when I see the E55, I see immense potential. Potential to become my next primary device, a device that finally manages to dethrone the E71. The 5800 came close, but not close enough and for the purposes of this post, I shall not consider the N97. So lets how the E71 matches up to the next generation Eseries.

So there you have it, the E71 is getting trumped on a lot of things. FP2 brings OTA Firmware updates, higher speed USB transfers, better browser download capabilities, access point prioritization amongst the eye candy. The E55 owing to the 3.5mm jack and WMA/WMV support is a better audio and video device. It also has better video capture, a faster CPU and the biggest of them all N-Gage. Then there is another Nseries exclusive, the on board video editor. Nokia has also added a dedicated camera key and accelerometer support, not to mention the beautiful brushed aluminum that takes away the fingerprint magnet tag. The size is definitely going to work for it and it is also 32 grams lighter than the E71. That’s a long list.

The aspects that could get people to hold on are the keypad and perhaps for some, the screen. The obvious argument being why give up full QWERTY? The answer is in the above paragraph, plus I am sure a few weeks of getting used to the new keypad will do the trick. Next is the matter of the screen, yes its the same size but the orientation makes a huge difference in readability and even otherwise. I find reading on the E71’s screen easier than say on the 2.6″ of the N95 just because of this simple thing.

The E55 thus comes up drubbing the E71 in almost all departments, so will it replace the E71? I don’t know. The reason I say that is because I am yet to play with one and also experience how fast (or slow) it is. The E71 is like greased lightning and so far no FP2 device I have played with has managed to match upto it (N78, N96 & N85 included). If it can do that, who knows… I fancy the white one. What do you think?

Having unboxed the Nokia 5800 a little while ago, I have been spending some quality time with the 5800 over the last three weeks, using it as my primary phone, including travelling with it as my sole telephone/multimedia device. This in-depth review of the 5800 covers aspects such as the hardware, touch capabilities, multimedia, software and my overall conclusion.

BACKGROUND

When the Nokia 5800 was announced, it did got get me too excited. My experience with touch devices in the past (both WinMo and the iPhone) had always led me to the conclusion that I wouldn’t be able to use a device that lacked a physical keyboard. Secondly, the specifications on 5800 weren’t earth shattering and the 3.2 megapixel camera was a bit of a disappointment.

Having the used the 5800, today I can safely say that my prejudice was baseless and Nokia has done a great job bringing touch in, while keeping the familiarity of the S60 platform intact.

HARDWARE

The 5800 comes in a monoblock form factor with the screen taking up most of the front. The right handside of the phone packs the camera button, volume/zoom keys and the supremely useful keypad/screen lock switch. The left hand side houses the SIM slot and the microSD slot. The top is relatively packed with the power button, the 3.5mm jack, the charger inlet and the microUSB slot that is protected from dust by a rubber cover. The back houses the stylus of the right hand side and the 3.2 MP AF camera with the dual-LED flash. Coming back to the front, the top right hand side contains the secondary camera for video calls and just below it is the touch sensitive multimedia menu switch. Just below the screen are present the three call, menu and end keys.

When I first came to know that the 5800 had the SIM slot on the side, I was happy for the simple reason that I could switch SIM cards easily without the hassle of removing the battery. However, I shortly found out that my joy was shortlived and removing the SIM still needed removing the battery and even the use of a stylus. Also, inserting a SIM while the phone is in the Offline mode and then switching to ‘General’ doesn’t help the phone detect the SIM either. Opportunity lost, Nokia. But, to their credit, the instructions relating to the SIM have been imprinted on the inside of the back cover so those new to the 5800 do not get confused.

BUILD QUALITY

The phone is completely made of plastic and one can easily make that out from all the gloss. That being said, the phone doesn’t look cheap and features almost stellar build quality. There are no creaks anywhere, the back cover fits snugly and none of the buttons is hard to press. The back is made of a rubberised material, like that on the N95 and that makes the phone feel better in the hand. The stylus is a little more than 3/4’s of the phone’s length and feels solid.

Since it is a touch based device, the use of a screen guard is mandatory as otherwise the stylus would scratch the surface in a matter of minutes, specially if you used an application such as Mobile Paint. I would have gladly given the 5800 10/10 in this department but for the fact that the first few batches of the device have problems with ear piece volume during calls, the Nokia service centers do offer to fix this, however it is quite disconcerting nevertheless. This problem should have been hopefully fixed by now for newer batches.

TOUCH IMPLEMENTATION

Like I’ve said earlier, I’m actually very pleased with the touch implementation on the 5800, that’s even more commendable considering the fact that this is Nokia’s first touch based S60 handset. Despite the presence of a stylus, the handset is optimised for a single handed finger based operation. Due to the nature of the touchscreen used, you will find the that you need to press the screen with a little more force than say on the iPhone. This is disconcerting at first, but you quickly get used to it. (That being said, I’d still like capacitive touchscreens on future Nokia’s). The single most useful feature that helps use touch is the generalised haptic feedback on the phone.

Since the feedback (in the form of a short vibration) is general, it won’t make you feel as if you have pressed a button but it still adds considerably to the experience. The phone offers three different levels of vibration, I’ve found 2 to be perfect. Additionally, you can also set the phone to play a tone along with the vibration for an even better on the move experience.

The one thing that is a major irritant is the fact that the menu is not accessible via touch and that diminishes the experience. This is specially true when using the stylus as you don’t really have a free hand to press the menu key. (Nokia, if nothing else please add the menu option to the multimedia bar or let users swap the bar with the menu). Another aspect that needs optimisation is the waste of two key spots between the softkeys while the phone is in the landscape mode. There is still room for optimisation but Nokia has clearly come out with a very usable first edition. Those of you familiar with S60 will take only a few days to get used to the device and start liking it. For others, the curve might be slightly longer.

One of the biggest reasons why I like the touch implementation is because it offers four different text entry modes. A full QWERTY, a mini QWERTY, handwriting recognition and a T9 capable alphanumeric keyboard — my favorite by far. Due to it, I never felt the handicap of a touch only device and didn’t even feel like using the full QWERTY option. Although, that might also be due to the fact that the QWERTY mode lacks predictive text/corrections.

MUSIC

The 5800 is part of the Xpress Music lineup of Nokia devices that are music centric. It features a 3.5mm jack, stereo loudspeakers and ships with a 8GB card — all the essentials for a killer music device, but it falls slightly short. The loudspeakers that the 5800 packs are easily the best ones even shipped by Nokia, they are LOUD, yet absolutely clear in the reproduction of the sound. I am yet to see a mobile device beat the 5800 in this department, leaving aside the Chinese phones that sometimes pack upto 4-6 loudspeakers.

The let down comes in the form of the output through the headphones, the volume is on the low side and the bass slightly weak. The 5800 doesn’t come close to the N91/N96 quality, it is more like the N95. Also, owing to the fact that it is a touch based device that lacks dedicated music keys, managing music on the go sometimes becomes a problem if you are not using the wired 3.5mm remote that ships with the device.

Unlike newer S60 FP2 devices, the 5800 doesn’t have an Internet Radio application embedded into the radio. The RDS capable FM radio exists and it performs well. Listening to the radio in the loud speaker mode is also a pleasant experience.

CAMERA

If I were to pick faults with the 5800, the camera would be one. The quality is ordinary compared to a few of Nokia’s 5MP camera phones that are priced in the same region. That being said, it is a tad unfair to compare the 5800 to the likes of N95 and N82. The 5800 is not a camera phone, so despite the Carl Zeiss lens, do not expect to be blown away by the camera quality. The images during the day come out nice and crisp, but indoors or in bad light even the dual LED cannot prevent loads of noise from creeping into the photos. The dualLED’s are available for video capture, and this mode makes the 5800 into a handy flashlight. It is seriously useful. Video is shot in the widescreen 640×360 resolution and makes for great viewing on the phone’s screen or via TV out.

As far as camera performance on the 5800 goes, it is quite speedy. If the phone is in the unlocked mode, you can expect to be able to click a photo withing 5-6 seconds from a cold start and start recording video in even lesser time. All the camera’s controls are touch optimised and the entire screen is available as the viewfinder during both video recording and image capture. The front camera sadly cannot be used for anything but video calls, why did Nokia do that? I can’t understand, since this is not even a Eseries device!

All in all, the 5800 cannot be your only camera on holidays, but it will do well for the odd moment when you need one. In terms of quality it beats Nokia’s competition with ease.

GAMING

The large screen on the 5800 is ideal for gaming, but the lack of physical controls is a huge handicap so I doubt whether hardcore gaming will ever take off on the 5800. Although the presence of an accelerometer has opened the door to motion games such as the inbuilt modified Global Racer that is controlled by tilting the phone to the sides or Marble Maze, pictured above, which is controlled in a similar manner.

There are a few touch based games available from the Nokia website — Touch Manuver and Touch Popper. The iconic game DOOM has also been ported over to S60 5th Edition and is capable of being fully controlled by touch. The gaming experience on the whole is fun for short bursts, nothing more.

WEB BROWSING

The 5800 is a great web device for obvious reasons. Access point prioritisation, good battery life, WIFI, touch and the large screen come together to spell — winner. Check out the video embedded above for an overview of this feature.

SOFTWARE

Although theoretically S60 5th Edition is binary compatible with S60 v3, but owing to the complete different input mechanism of the 5800, only a few applications work properly. Thus, there has been a general lack of 3rd party applications that are optimised for the 5800. The 5800 lacks a ZIP client of the the box and the document (.DOC and .PDF) viewers are also missing. Although, to its credit, Nokia has tried to offer at least a few applications via the Download! client and through its regional websites — Nokia India and Nokia HK. (I’m not happy with the regionalisation though).

Quick Office viewers are available via the Download! client and the problem of not having a .Zip client is easily solved with either X-Plore or Y-Browser.

The good news is that this scenario is changing as more and more applications become compatible. S60 has also started a section on S60 5th Edition applications that they will update regularly. Popular essentials such as Y-Browser, SymTorrent and applications from companies such as Epocware have already become available. Basically, if you buy a 5800 now, you can rest assured that the 3rd party application catalogue will quickly fill up.

The java applications run well on the 5800 and with the full screen view in play, applications such as Gmail are a treat. The 5800 also offers a virtual Navi pad which you can use with applications that seem hard to use with touch. In most java applications, the use of a stylus greatly helps in enhancing usability.

NAVIGATION

I had the opportunity of taking the 5800 with me while I was travelling and I can safely tell you that the presence of a large wide screen really improves the experience as the user can get a better overview of the route. Both Google Maps and Nokia’s own solution run beautifully on the 5800 and if you are in the US, street view on the 5800 is simply wicked.

BATTERY LIFE

The 5800 houses a 1320 mAh battery to power its 3.2″ touchscreen and it does a good job of keeping the phone alive for long periods. I can easily get upto 2 days with moderate usage that includes listening to music via the loundspeakers, web browsing over EDGE/WIFI, calls, a few text messages and some miscellaneous usage. Along with this the phone is set to ping my Gmail inbox for new messages every 30 minutes. On an average, even with heavy usage that includes a lot of web browsing, the phone will live for about 24 hours.

CONCLUSION

My device came pre loaded with the version 11 firmware and I have got to say that it makes the 5800 one of the most stable devices at launch, ever. The UI is quick and snappy and even with transitions enabled the phone is fairly fast. This along with its web browsing capabilities, good battery, loudspeakers and large screen makes the 5800 a very likeable phone indeed. The one thing that is weak on the 5800 is email, there is Mail for Exchange support but apart from that you will need to rely on the inbuilt S60 email application. I personally am happy with that because I’ve never loved push email much. Having set the phone to ping my mailbox every 30 minutes, it retrieves the headers for me, infact that’s the exact setup I use on my other devices too.

There are still a few gaps that need to be filled in, but I personally love the device and that quotient increases almost everyday, it is the only device that has let me move away from my trusty E71 without heartburn.

The 5800 Xpress Music is a recommended BUY.

If you tried using the Ovi Store today, you would have noticed that it was down for some scheduled maintenance. Its back up now and with that come some under the hood improvements, a new Ovi Store client v1.07(12) and a couple of visible differences. The Ovi Store client is still based on WRT and very similar to what you have been using thus far.

The first change that you will notice is the ‘Load more items..’ dialog once you reach the end of a page, this gets rid of the page by page display of apps and is helpful if you quickly want to go back to an app that you may have overlooked. Next is the fact that search is now much better, it probably searches the entitle and description instead of just the start of the app’s name, as was the case earlier.

Its a smallish download and a install that takes about a minute.

The look and feel is similar to what we are used to, so if you were hoping for a Qt based client you will have to wait some more.

Notice that none of the apps start with the word ‘Symbian’. This improved search should help in discovering more apps.

While on the subject on the Ovi Store, you can also download our very own ‘The Symbian Blog’ app for free from the Ovi Store. For non touch devices and this is the link for touch devices.

There is better use of channels and labeling to help discover more content, and the team at AAS thinks that the client seems faster as well. Notice any other improvements? Let us know in the comments section below.
