How to set up ADB (Android Debug Bridge)

I. Setting Up The SDK

1. Download the Latest Android SDK from Google

Android SDK (Select the exe version)

2. Once downloaded, double click the exe file to open it. (MAKE SURE you change the directory that it is installing everything to to c:\android-sdk\)

3. Click on the SDK Manager and it will ask you to install packages.
Select the following and leave all others unchecked:

Android SDK Tools
Android SDK Platform Tools
Google USB Driver Package, Revision XX (XX being the highest number available)

4. Then click continue and follow the on screen prompts until all of the packages are installed and it finishes.

5a. On your phone, click Settings>Applications>Development and make sure USB Debugging is on.

5b. If using Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), click on Settings>Developer Options and make sure USB Debugging is on.

6. Plug your phone into your computer via USB cable (it needs to be on). It should say installing drivers if using Windows.

7. Open Windows File Explorer and look for the android-sdk folder inside of the C drive. Then open the platform-tools folder inside that. Now, hold the shift key down on your keyboard and right click in any blank area inside that folder. This will give you the option to open a command window here. Select that and a command prompt will open saying c:\android-sdk\platform-tools\ *if using windows XP, this won’t work. So instead open command prompt first by going to Start>Run>then typing in cmd and hitting enter. Then type cd c:\android-sdk\platform-tools\ and hit enter, then continue.

8. Type the following into the command prompt window (hitting enter at the end of every line):

adb devices

You should see a serial number pop up, it’s the serial number of your phone. This means you are all set!

If you do NOT see a serial number, then we need to reinstall the drivers manually

Overview

An Internet Protocol (IP) Modem Connection Manager is included with BlackBerry® Desktop Manager 5.0.1 that is designed to configure the BlackBerry smartphone as a tethered modem.
When a BlackBerry smartphone has tethered modem capability, it can be used as an external modem to connect a computer to the Internet.
Summary of Tasks
To set up a tethered modem in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager 4.1 to 5.0, complete the following tasks:
Install BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.1 to 5.0 (one time only).

Set up the Internet access point name (APN) (one time only).

Configure Dial-up Networking (DUN) (one time only).

Connect to the Internet using DUN.

Task 1

Install BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.1 to 5.0 on the computer.

Note: When BlackBerry Desktop Software is installed, the drivers that allow the BlackBerry smartphone to communicate through the USB port and virtual communications port are installed. The standard modem that is used by Dial-up Networking (DUN) is also installed.

Task 2

To set up an Internet access point name (APN) - for GSM devices only - complete the following steps:

On the computer, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click Phone and Modem Options.
In the Phone and Modem Options window, click the Modems tab.
Select Standard Modem and click Properties.
Click Change Settings.
In the Standard Modem Properties window, click the Advanced tab.
In the Extra initialization commands field, type the following:
+cgdcont=1,"IP","<Device Internet APN>"

Note: The following is applicable for T-Mobile® customers only:
The extra initialization command is:
+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"
Note: If the Internet APN is unknown, contact the wireless service provider.
Click OK.
In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK.

Task 3

To configure DUN, complete the the following steps for the appropriate operating system.

Windows 7

Click the Windows icon.
In the search bar, type Set up Connection or Network.
Click Set up a dial-up connection.
Perform the appropriate step from the following list:
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, type *99# in the Dial-Up Phone numberfield, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, type *98# in the Dial-Up Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) or 1x/Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) networks, type #777 in the Dial-Up Phone numberfield, and click Next.
Type the user name and password provided by the wireless service provider. If the wireless service provider has confirmed that this information is not required, leave the fields blank.
In the Connection Name field type BlackBerry.
Click Dialing Rules.
Make sure the profile created in Task 2 has been selected (if applicable), and then click OK.
Select Connect to establish an Internet connection.

Windows Vista™

Click Start.
Select Connect To.
Click Set up a connection or network.
Click Set up a dialup connection.
Perform the appropriate step from the following list:
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, type *99# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, type *98# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) or 1x/Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) networks, type #777 in the Phone number field, and click Next.

In the Connection Name field type BlackBerry.

Click Create a New Connection. The New Connection Wizard opens.
Click Next.
Select the Connect to the Internet option, and then click Next.

Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and then click Next.
In the Select a Device screen, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box, and then click Next.
In the ISP Name field, type a name for the desired connection, and then click Next.
Perform the appropriate step from the following list:
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, type *99# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, type *98# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) or 1x/Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) networks, type #777 in the Phone number field, and click Next.
Indicate which users will have access to the connection, and then click Next.
Type the user name and password provided by the wireless service provider. If the wireless service provider has confirmed that this information is not required, leave the fields blank. ClickNext.
Click Finish.
In the Connect window, click Properties.
In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem appears beneath the Connect using heading, and then click Configure.
In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure that none of the other check boxes are selected.
Click OK.
In the Properties window, click OK.

Windows 2000

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

Note: The following is applicable for T-Mobile® customers only:
Under the networking tab in the properties window for the dial-up connection, clear the Enable LCP Extensions check box, as well as all check boxes beneath the PPP Settings window.
Double-click Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard opens.
Click Next.
Choose Dial-up to private network, and then click Next.
Perform the appropriate step from the following list:
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, type *99# in the Phone number field, and click Next.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone operates on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, type *98# in the Phone number field, and click Next.

Task 4

Connect to the Internet using DUN.

Note: During this procedure, do not operate the browser or any third-party applications on the BlackBerry smartphone. An active data session might interfere with the modem connection. Also, make sure that an ethernet connection is not active at the same time.

To connect to the Internet using DUN, complete the following steps:

Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and verify that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager displaysConnected. The BlackBerry smartphone must be identified by BlackBerry Desktop Manager in order for the modem to establish a connection.
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections > <name of the new connection>.
If the wireless service provider requires a username and password to make this connection, enter this information in the fields provided. Otherwise, leave the fields blank.
Click Dial.

Important: The BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be running for the tethered modem to function.

Note: If Microsoft® Outlook® is operating in Cached Exchange mode, a message may appear indicating that BlackBerry Desktop Manager cannot contact the messaging server. If this message appears, clickCancel to proceed.

How to upgrade Blackberry OS

Upgrading sometimes is required as I did to get OS 5.0 from my previous OS 4.7.1, many things were improve with the higher OS but doing on Blackberry is little bit difficult and risky. So if you're insisted, then "Do it with your own risk !!!". Some 3rd party application or themes may not work with different OS.

Preparation :

Blackberry Desktop Manager. Download here
Device Software. Download here. Select base on your carrier/provider and your BB type and choose what version you want to install on/upgrade to.

Upgrading :

Install BB Desktop Manager
Install your new device software, once completed find folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader), get and delete file name vendor.xml .
Launch BB DeskMan, connect your BB via USB cable, if App update prompted, select cancel.
Backup your data from option Backup and Restore menu, this will only save your contact, profile setting, menu icon arrangement, etc. If necessary backup also your 3rd party applications.
Select Application Loader from BB DeskMan. Check at all important app and uncheck which is not necessary or just let it as default.
Choose "Do not automatically back up and restore the device application data during the loading process", click Next and Finish. Upgrading will be started and take 30-60 minutes or more. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR CABLE OR SWITCH OFF YOUR PC it could break your handheld.
Once Process completed it will boot your BB automatically.
Now your BB should have new OS and don't forget to restore your data and 3rd party app.

How to update your BlackBerry Device Software over the wireless network

*Updating your device software over the wireless network may take up to two hours. You can update you device software over the wireless network when a wireless update icon appears on the Home screen of your BlackBerry smartphone. This icon may appear automatically, or after you manually checked for device updates
1. To check for device updates, manually select Options from the Home screen
2. Select Advanced Options and then Wireless Update
3. This screen will indicate that there are three stages to the Update process: Requesting the new software, Downloading the new software, and Updating the new software on your BlackBerry smartphone; during the first two stages you can continue to use your BlackBerry normally
4. After clicking Next, you are presented with a screen showing your current software version and an option to check for software updates- you can manually check for new software here at any time
5. Click Check for Updates
6. When you select check for updates, the handheld will check to see if any updates are available and if so, present them to you
7. If device updates are available, a notification icon will appear on the Home screen and the version will be displayed here
8. If there is an update available, to download to software, click the update
9. If the update icon appears on your Home screen, select it to open the wireless download menu

Adjust the following settings for optimal storage efficiency on your BlackBerry smartphone:

In BlackBerry® Desktop Software, set messages to stop being forwarded to the BlackBerry smartphone when it is cradled.
To adjust this setting complete these steps.
1. In BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, open Email Settings.
2. Check the check box beside Disable message redirection while your device is connected.
Set messages to prompt you when deleting an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone. The prompt allows you to choose to either delete the message on the BlackBerry smartphone only or on the BlackBerry smartphone and the messaging server, which deletes the email message on both the BlackBerry smartphone and the email application with which it is associated.
To adjust this setting on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:
1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select Email Reconciliation.
4. SelectPrompt for the Delete On setting. (You can also selectHandheld rather than Prompt, which will delete messages on the BlackBerry smartphone without a prompt, when you choose to delete messages.)
Note: If you position the cursor on a date field in the email messages list on the BlackBerry smartphone and select Delete Prior, you will only delete the messages on the BlackBerry smartphone no matter what the setting is in the Delete On field, which leaves the email messages saved in the email application with which the BlackBerry smartphone is associated.
Flash memory is used to download and display email messages on the BlackBerry smartphone. Set the Auto More option to No to make sure that only the sections of the email message that you want to read on the BlackBerry smartphone are downloaded, displayed, and thus, stored in flash memory. By setting the Auto More option to No, the BlackBerry smartphone displays approximately the first 2 KB of an email message; you can display more of the email message by selecting More on the menu.
Note: If the Auto More option is set to Yes, scrolling automatically displays more of the email message. Be aware that you may be dowloading large email messages by scrolling through an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: The size of the entire email message is displayed at the bottom of the email message screen. Average messages are usually no larger than 2 KB.
By setting the Auto More option to No, you can make sure the flash memory is not unnecessarily used on the BlackBerry smartphone by disallowing the automatic download option.
To set the Auto More option to No, complete the following steps:
1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select General Options.
4. In the Auto More field, select No.
Caution: The More All option on the menu gives you the choice of downloading the entire email message at once, no matter how the Auto More setting is configured.
The More All option should be used with caution since the BlackBerry smartphone uses flash memory to store email messages that have been displayed.
For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 3.8 or 4.0, set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression. Although content compression causes the BlackBerry smartphone to work harder (thus, using more battery power), it will make sure that email messages use the least amount of flash memory that is possible.
To set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression, complete the following steps:
1. On the Home screen, open Options.
2. Select Security Options.
3. Select General Settings.
4. Set the Content Compression field to Enabled.

Battery power can be maximized by following these simple suggestions.

Use BlackBerry smartphone shortcuts to access common system features quickly. For instructions, see the Getting Started Guide for your BlackBerry smartphone. Using shortcuts allows you to do the same things on your BlackBerry smartphone more quickly and efficiently, while saving battery power.
Some common shortcuts include the following:
- To delete a highlighted item, press the Delete key.
- To select or clear a check box, press the Space key.
- To view available values in a field, press the Alt key.
- To switch applications:
  1. Hold the Alt key and press the Escape key.
  2. Continue to hold the Alt key and highlight an application.
  3. Release the Alt key.
- Set the Auto On/Off option to turn off the BlackBerry smartphone at a time of day when you are not using it (such as at night), and turn on again at a time of day that you are ready to use it (such as in the morning just before you wake up).
