Synergia Northwest’s unique celebration of music and music education May 18

Seattle’s historic Moore Theater showcased Synergia Northwest’s unique celebration of music and music education May 18. The night opened with 12-year-old Caspian Coberly ripping a Jimi Hendrix-inspired rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” From there, the evening seamlessly blended rap, rock, the Garfield High School drum line, pop and classical music.

The stage held plenty of rock star power, including Michael Shrieve (Santana), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), and a host of well-known area musicians. The Synergia Northwest Orchestra — music teachers, freelancers, college students and dedicated amateurs — backed the rock acts and filled the interludes with classical music, including excerpts from “The Nutcracker” and the “William Tell Overture.” You’ve never experienced the kind of artistic whiplash you get from hearing a heavy metal break followed by “Dance of the Toy Soldiers.”

There were spectacular moments of virtuosity and energy, exciting collaborations and surreal musical pairings. The sight and sound of so many successful performing artists giving of their time and talent to advance music education was inspirational.

You know the story. In an era of straitened education funding, many schools have cut back on their music programs. Band starts later. Choir gets slighted. Before they have a chance to engage in music, a lot of students have become involved in other pursuits.

Don’t blame the overdue commitment to Common Core Standards, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) emphasis and academic accountability. But resources are limited, and school boards and administrators make choices.

Synergia Northwest is now in its fourth year. Previously the group helped promote the Music Matters license plate to raise money for public school music programs. This year’s concert benefits Seattle Music Partners’ after-school program providing free music lessons to underserved elementary school students in Seattle’s Central District.

Seattle musician Michael McMorrow is Synergia Northwest’s executive producer and music director. His vision and drive draws world-class performers to the annual concerts.

“We definitely are making an impact and . . . foresee more opportunity for young kids to be involved in music programs,” McMorrow says on the organization’s website. “The absolute uniqueness of this event coupled with the vast talent and community oriented business leaders right here in the Northwest are creating the perfect storm for success.”

This is personal for me. Last year, my son Justin was lead guitar player for one of the night’s top bands. He mentioned to McMorrow, who was looking for horn players, that I played. That was my first exposure to Synergia Northwest. Justin was a featured performer again this year, and I again sat in with the orchestra, directed by Bret Smith. A music education faculty member at Central Washington University, Smith put in long hours in rehearsal and in writing orchestra parts to go with the rock performances. In an email, Smith explains his dedication to the project.

“The ‘classical’ and ‘pop/contemporary’ music worlds all consist of people who got some help along the way from teachers, mentors, family members (and) community music organizations,” he says. “Synergia means joint work, cooperative action, moving together.” He calls that an apt description of this effort to boost community awareness and financial support for music education.

Researchers and teachers identify positive educational benefits from music training, which has been linked to improved academic performance, discipline, teamwork, coordination, and enhanced math and reading skills. The tech world’s musical affinity is well-documented. Paul Allen’s passion for guitar may be extreme, but not unusual.

The Synergia NW concert came just before Memorial Day. After World War II, my father returned from occupied Japan to resume his career as a band director in the Midwest. He focused on beginning students, wanting to be certain every child got off to a good start.
I thought of him, veteran and educator, last weekend, remembering the joy and pride he took in his students’ success. From his place on heaven’s bandstand, he must surely delight in seeing the torch carried on for another generation.

The significance of arts education will perhaps always be contested in legislative and school budget deliberations. For now, let’s celebrate the great work done by those who work creatively to assure every child gets a chance to experience the joy of making music.

Music Matters "Live" brought power and passion to The Paramount

We have covered and written about it extensively over the course of the last three years. But we still are asked, “What exactly is Synergia Northwest?”

For those that attended Synergia Northwest concerts at The Temple Theatre in 2010, The Moore Theatre in 2011 and The Paramount Theatre in 2012, no explanation is necessary. For those that chose not to attend, no definitive explanation is possible.

One could take the obvious route and simply say that it is a multi-genre music / dance concert that features some of the brightest talent throughout the region, backed by a powerful orchestra. That would be accurate, but it wouldn't touch on what the concept of Synergia Northwest truly is.

Like previous years, this year’s version, Synergia Northwest presents Music “Live,” was a musical experience that simply cannot be summed up in writing. Most profound life or musical experiences typically can’t if they deliver something special, and once again this year’s Synergia Northwest delivered music and magic on an even grander scale.

Prior to the concert, the artists hung out with VIP ticket holders. They graciously signed CD’s and posters, and posed for photos. The artists seemed to enjoy the communal feeling and real time interaction with passionate fans.

The show...

The concert opened up with the Native American “Swan Song”accompanied by the Synergia Northwest Orchestra, followed by the exquisitely beautiful rendition of Verdi arr. Overture to Nabucco.

In what seems to have become a Synergia Northwest tradition, Geoffrey Castle took the stage with his trademark electric violin an arsenal of pedals and effects, and alongside guitar prodigy Caspian Coberly, launched into Castle’s"Istanbul." Castle never ceases to impress, but to see the young Coberly, who is obviously a product of music education, perform alongside a virtuoso like Castle, was just stunning.

The Synergia provided the music segue of Vaughn Williams: Dives and Lazarus opening to Variant 1 into Synergia Northwest 2010 alum and former Heart guitarist and producerHoward Lesse’s performances of “Nessun Dorma” and his version of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s“Somewhere” from West Side Story.

One of the musical highlights of the evening was a performance from Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs. The gritty roots rock artists performed “Shine” and “Wait.” Backed by the orchestra, the two numbers became bigger and more powerful than ever and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Star Anna’s performance was the perfect tee up for Northwest music veteran and X-Factor fan favorite, LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends. They performed “Out of My Head” and“Change is Coming.” The soulful Bell was in fine voice, and like Star Anna right before, The SNWO brought out something special from Bell and Friends. Playing with a live orchestra seemed to energize the artists, as well as the audience.

After a brief intermission, Vicci Martinez, who flew up from Los Angeles, performed “Little Faith” with Blues Travelers’Brendan Hill on drums and “Let Go.” On “Little Faith” Martinez brought out a floor tom and pounded it with impunity.

One of the highlights from last year was a haunting performance from Shawn Smith of Brad. This year, he brought the boys with him. He was joined onstage by guitaristStone Gossard (Pearl Jam), Regan Hagar (Malfunkshun) on drums, and Keith Lowe on bass, and performed “Upon My Shoulder” and “Buttercup.” Smith’s soulful tenor was mesmerizing as it floated over the band and the orchestra.

Next up was Synergia Northwest mainstay Alan White (Yes, John Lennon, George Harrison) with his bandWhite, featuring Robyn Dawn on lead vocals. In what had to be one of the most mind-blowing performances of the evening, the group played a sonically brilliant Yes version of the Simon and Garfunkel classic, “America,” complete with the full-on instrumental jam, which was practically replicated note for note by Jonathan Sindleman (keyboards), Steve Boyce (bass), and Karl Haug (guitar.)

After “America,” White members cleared the way for the powerful Brazilian drum break featuring Dora Oliveria and The Samba Reggae Revolution. The pounding drums, along with the athletic movements of the dance troupe, were hypnotic, and drew a collective “wow” from the audience.

After the drum break, White reconvened on stage and performed “Changes" from the Yes 90125 disc.

Next was another one for the mental highlight reel, a stirring performance of Bernie Taupin and Sir Elton John’s “Madman Across The Water” by the all-star group consisting ofBrendan Hill on drums, Howard Leese on guitar, Michael McMorrow on piano, Marc Willet on bass and Somar Macek (Heart by Heart), backed by the mighty Synergia NorthwestOrchestra.

Macek has performed in Heart tribute bands for years. It was a revelation to see her step out of that bubble and show different colors from her vocal palette. Her range and power were on full display. Seeing and hearing this particular song, highlighted by some of the most incredible and dissonant string arrangements ever produced performed live, was one of the more special moments of the evening.

Macek, band, and orchestra were augmented with a surprise performance from another Northwest music heavyweight,Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains.) He and Macek sang another John / Taupin classic,“Levon.”

For the encores, Vicci Martinez returned to the stage along with Shawn Smith, Brendan Hill, Howard Leese, Michael McMorrow, Marc Willett, and Geoffrey Castle to perform a lovely version of “Tiny Dancer.”

The evening reached a fitting conclusion with a rendition ofBob Dylan's “Forever Young” featuring Star Anna, Justin Davis, Caspian Coberly, Hill, Leese, McMorrow, Marc Willett, Karl Haug and Geoffrey Castle.

Synergia Northwest Executive Producer and Musical Director shared his thoughts after the concert…

Examiner.com: Aside from the fact that you have been doing this for a couple years now and the concert is in a bigger venue, on a spiritual or emotional level, what was different about this year's show compared to the last couple of years?

McMorrow: We expanded our circle of musical friends this year for one. Bringing on BRAD, Vicci, LeRoy and Star really broadened our representation of Northwest music. This has always been for me a platform for showcasing the best of northwest artists in an incredibly unique way. It is a one of a kind opportunity. You will not see this anywhere else in the country. Synergia has always been about the unique experience from year to year. Those who have attended from year one such as yourself, have seen the unfolding musical story from the beginning. But as you know it's never to late to jump in! We constantly keep the content of each show fresh building on what we have done. I thought Jerry Cantrell was a nice surprise to everyone. Jerry doing Elton John's “Levon”with a 50-piece orchestra? Where else you going to see that??

Examiner.com: What did some of the artist have to say to you when it was over about their experience?

McMorrow: All of the artists say something along the lines of that this is one of the most incredible things they have ever done. Alan White who has pretty much done and seen everything say's our concerts are unprecedented in his career. Howard Leese is amazed at the level of talent and musicianship and thinks everyone needs to see this. Star says it's the coolest thing she has ever done and it goes on and on. I am very humbled by all of this but deep down excited about the future.

Examiner.com: I know that this year's version just wrapped up but are you already thinking ahead to next year and will there be other Synergia NW events between now and next year?

McMorrow: We are absolutely already thinking about next year. We love the Paramount and our show works really well there. There has been talk of another event between now and next year. I'm not sure it will be just like the spring event... we may take a different course but rest assured it will be unique in the way the spring events are.

Examiner.com: Is there any thing else that you would like to say about this year's show?

McMorrow: First off, this year my son played violin in the orchestra this year. That was a huge moment for both of us. He is the main reason I started and pursued the whole concept of Synergia. To have Howard Leese introduce him and I and then watching him take his seat in the orchestra was an incredible moment.

The next thing would be the Elton John material for me. I am a huge fan of Elton John. I can say his music early on was the reason I got into playing and writing. Funny thing is Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and I were having this conversation backstage and he is a huge Elton fan too and got into music the exact same way I did. Through Elton! We both talked about hearing Bennie and the Jet’s and then discovering all the records Elton and Bernie were putting out at that time. I told Jerry that I always wanted to do the Madman Across the Water material with a full orchestra and he said the same thing and , well.. we did it! What an amazing full circle coming together of two artists. I can’t thank Paul Buckmaster, Red Rocket Management and Sir Elton John himself for donating the original Elton John Live w/ the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra scores for us to perform. I am like still blown out about it. I mean wow…

I love how far we have gotten in 3 years. I have a unique vision of each and every event and actually taking that insight and re-creating it into a living breathing reality can be quite a feat. This year to me was the closest we have gotten yet. We turned the corner this year and feel there is a bit a wind behind our sails. We are getting closer and closer to that crystalline musical vision. People were so moved at times this year. I was told that people were crying in the audience. There were also a lot of huge cheering and standing O’s too!

This year we also brought on fantastic community leaders and sponsors. It is re-affirming to have such great Northwest companies such as Bartell Drugs, BECU, Carter Subaru, KING 5 TV and WARM 106.9 FM among others who really stepped up to the plate and support youth music education in Washington State. We look forward to continuing these relationships in the years to come.

I also cannot say enough about our Synergia Northwest Orchestra Director and conductor and long-time friend Bret Smith and the entire team who works on stage and behind the scenes who without their incredible creativity and professionalism this musical dream would not be real. We have hands down the best of the best production, orchestrators, staff and volunteers in the business. Their dedication to music and art is unparalleled. Amy Elyse with her tireless production team, Mark Naficy and his amazing dedication to our sound and production, Bill Boyd, Phil Petersen, Beth Chandler, Brenna Davenport-Leigh, Shawn Stewart, Carolyn Douglas, Bob Minkin, Jessica and Jaimee Castaneda,Jerry & Lois Levin, Seattle Music Insider. The entire McMorrow family who are all involved behind the scenes; without their support I’d probably be in a rubber room somewhere! STG and The Paramount Theatreand of course the guiding hands of Alan and Gigi White who have from day one supported this project among the many other wonderful things they do for our community. Now is time for rest as I wipe the slate clean and start the process of building towards the next event. See you in 2013!

Closing thoughts…

Year after year, Synergia Northwest concerts attract an array of talent. This year’s lineup was more diverse than previous years, and the obvious star power was on full display but to me, the real star of the show was The Synergia Northwest Orchestra itself. The orchestra, conducted by the amazing Dr. Bret Smith, was the soul and magic behind this incredible concert that must be seen and heard in person to be fully appreciated.

It was the orchestral arrangements that make a show like Synergia transcend music entertainment and become a life-affirming and emotional journey.

It is also apparent that Synergia is starting to hit its stride in terms of producing a professional, fluid show. The transitions between the various performances were pretty seamless. Soundman and industry veteran Mark Naficy did a wonderful job in terms of dialing the orchestra and individual artists in, which resulted in a very high quality sound, solid stereo field, and strong overall production value. This was no easy chore, given the short turn around from load in to the first downbeat.

Music Matters “Live” is an apropos moniker for this year’s version of Synergia. The musicians that participated are all products of music education. Their performances drove home the point that music is an integral part of our lives, and that the world would be a pretty empty place without it.

Those who participate either as an audience member or performer will define whatever Synergia Northwest is. Synergia Northwest isn’t a thing, it's a feeling, an attitude, and a profound artistic experience. Moreover, it's a vehicle that serves as a simple reminder to those large and small, in body and spirit, that music does matter on a larger scale than one can fathom.

LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends join Music Matters "Live" lineup

Music Matters “Live” just added LeRoy Bell And His Only Friends to its already robust lineup.

Bell will be a featured performer, along with Vicci Martinez, who gained national attention last year with her show-stopping performances on season one of NBC’s The Voice. Also on the bill is Americana singer / songwriter Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs.

Although he looks preternaturally young, Bell has been working the music scene for decades. In 1978, he and his friend Casey James formed the duo Bell and James. They went on to write and record the funky disco hit, “Livin’ It Up.”

Bell would go on to compose songs that became hits for other artists - including a couple of singles for Elton John, from The Complete Thom Bell Sessions - produced by Leroy’s uncle. The record was released in 1979. Elton John’s version of “Mama Can’t Buy You Love” eventually became a top ten hit.

Although Bell seemed to disappear from the national scene, his passion for music never subsided. He continued writing and performing steadily. Last year, the Tacoma native auditioned for the American version of The X Factor, and was selected for the Final 16.

Bell made a very respectable showing, but was eliminated after the fifth live episode. Still, the soul crooner finished eighth overall. Most importantly, his appearance on the show brought this talented singer / songwriter and musician back into the spotlight.

In another quirky connection to Elton John, a special musical addition to this year’s Synergia Northwest production include selections from Sir Elton John's rock classic, “Madman Across The Water.” The original orchestral scores were donated to Synergia Northwest especially for this event, on behalf of Sir Elton John.

Other artists for this year’s show include Yes drummer and Grammy award winning artist AlanWhite, plus his band, White; Heart guitarist Howard Leese; and a first time dance and musical performance by Dora Oliveira's Samba Reggae Revolution. Other special guests will be announced in the near future.

Music Matters “Live” will take place at the historic, Paramount Northwest Theatre in Seattle on Saturday evening, May 12th. Proceeds will benefit music programs in Washington public schools.

Michael McMorrow, a long time Edmonds resident and Seattle musician and producer conceived the idea to blend classical, contemporary, professional and student musicians in one concert, unifying cultures, ages and musical genres. The reason behind this conception is to benefit school music programs throughout Washington State. This show is called Music Matters LIVE!

Music Matters LIVE! Is scheduled for May 12, 2012 at the Paramount Theatre. What is Music Matters LIVE!? It’s a concert, more like a 2 hour all out production featuring the
Synergia Northwest Orchestra alongside of some of the Pacific Northwest’s most high profile rock and pop recording artists and selected student musicians.

McMorrow grew up in Edmonds, in the “Bowl” and played music as a child, quickly finding his passion for anything music. He attended Holy Rosary, College Place Middle, and Seattle Prep. His career has involved him in indie and major labels, radio, and is currently a member of the Recording Academy of Arts and Sciences, a voting member of the Grammys and is an advisory board member of Music Aid Northwest. His music productions have included top bands in the area such as Alice In Chains, members of Soundgarden, Queensryche, the Posies as well as Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart among many others.

Being a father who loves music, it’s only natural that McMorrow’s son was going to be curious about music and want to get involved. One of his sons struggled in school with subjects such as reading and math. He wanted to try out the violin around the 4th or 5th grade. By the 5th grade, his son was playing in the school orchestra. Quickly, McMorrow noticed that his son’s grades were improving and his social circle had expanded. He was now an honor student. McMorrow said, “The evidence is clear, music boosts the brain development. Music and melodies can make connections in the brain.”

McMorrow who has served on the board of Music Aid Northwest, took interest in their Music Matters license plate campaign. With 5th grade music on the chopping block, he decided to jump on board and do what he could to get the word out that the money raised from the Music Aid Northwest license plates sold, the music programs could be saved. Music Matters LIVE! concerts have helped Music Aid Northwest in raising the capital needed to create a music-themed license plate that helps support school music programs through its sales. You can purchase one of these license plates through the Washington State Department of Licensing.

McMorrow talked about this huge event in the works, Music Matters LIVE! and his passion for it. From his description, it’s a 2 hour performance piece and the orchestra is “unbelievable”. So far, they have announced a few of the performers who will perform along with the Synergia Northwest Orchestra. These include, performances by Vicci Martinez, from The Voice; Yes's Grammy award winning Alan White and White; Heart guitarist Howard Leese; gritty Americana-laced Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs; and a first time dance and music performance by Dora Oliveira's Samba Reggae Revolution. Wait, there’s more! There will be performances of selections from Elton John's rock classic Madman Across The Water. McMorrow said there are some amazing big names about to be announced.

What is the Synergia Northwest Orchestra? It was formed for the debut Synergia Northwest concert and is comprised of some of the area's finest professional classical musicians and selected players from Washington State All-State groups and regional youth and public school orchestras.

Last year Pacific Northwest native Vicci Martinez, gained national attention with some soulful and show stopping performances on season one of NBC’s The Voice. The Universal Republic recording artist who now makes her home in Los Angeles will return to the region to join Yes drummer and Grammy award winning artist Alan White and the band White.

Also on the bill will be former Heart guitarist Howard Leese; Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs; and a first time dance and music performance by Dora Oliveira's Samba Reggae Revolution. These world-class artists will join forces for a magical evening to celebrate musical diversity, music education and community. Other special guests will be announced in the near future.

Synergia Northwest will present Music Matters “Live” at the legendary and historic, Paramount Northwest Theatre in Seattle on Saturday, May 12th. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit music programs throughout the state of Washington.

Synergia is a Greek word that means joint work and cooperative action. Synergia Northwest 2011 could be defined as a night when Classical, Classic Rock, Progressive Rock, Roots Rock, Power Pop, Folk and World Music collided, converged and worked in perfect harmony and synergy... if you will, to create an evening of music magic. This past Friday, May 6th, the multi-genre music event swept in and took an engaged and appreciative audience on a musical journey at the historic Moore Theater, deep in the heart of The Emerald City.

When music is done right by real virtuosos and artists that have for years honed their craft, it defies definition and thus, Synergia Northwest 2011, like last year, is a challenge to try to explain to the uninitiated. However, I put in a concerted effort to tell the story on the front end the best I could with music and interviews here: SMI Radio Synergia Northwest 2011 Podcast

Completing its sophomore year, Synergia Northwest 2.0 is now in the books, with its mind’s eye looking toward the future, with visions of becoming an annual tradition that will continue evolve, grow and spread its wings and fly to other lands to share the passion of music to generations of diverse, colors, creeds and cultures.

What also must be duly noted is that a virtual all-star team of musical artists lent their energy, talent and passion to a cause bigger than themselves, music education for kids via Music Aid Northwest.

Outside of The Moore Theater on 2nd Avenue, it was another dreary and grey May Seattle night. In deep contrast, inside the theater was a warm and colorful glow, as several hundred music lovers waited in anticipation for what would unfold that evening. With the music of Steely Dan playing out into the house, the Synergia Northwest Orchestra directed by Nikolas Caoile, took their positions on stage. At this point the house music faded, the stage lights slowly came up and orchestra opened the show with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture.

Geoffrey Castle then took the stage with his band and his trademark electric violin and performed "Istanbul" and a sample of "Streets of Inwood," slowly bringing the energy on the stage and in the theater up another notch. The intensity and passion would continue to build from there, as the musical journey continued on throughout the evening.

The night's tone was set as the Synergia Orchestra then performed and captured beautifully, the spirit of one of the most stunning American musical pieces ever written, a delicious medley from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Power Pop and Punk meet Classical…
The energy at the Moore shifted gears again when power pop group,Tennis Pro’s quirky and punk spirited attitude crossed paths with the orchestral maneuvers from the "house band." The juxtaposition worked well and seemed to elicit a collective smile from the audience. Tennis Pro consists of: Sean Lowry (drums), David Drury (guitar/vocals), and Phillip Peterson (bass/vocals). Peterson performed double duty that evening, playing cello in the orchestra.

Keeping it real...
Some of the most moving moments of the evening was when Shawn Smith (Brad / Pigeonhead / Satchel) walked out on stage to perform with the orchestra. Smith’s voice was beautiful, haunting and soulful. His understated yet powerful performance of "Don’t lie to Me" challenges our leaders, the media, the people that surround our daily lives and ourselves to simply tell the truth and keep it real. Smith's authentic vocal and lyrical delivery demonstrated to the audience that they were in the presence of a true artist.
Smith also performed equally haunting; soulful and memorable versions of "Someday" as well as the title track from his "Wrapped in My Memory" LP.

After Smith's masterful performance, Master of Ceremonies and KMTT returning prodigal son, Marty Riemer introduced Music Aide Northwest President, Bob Tomberg at center stage to talk about music education and “The Music License Plate Bill” signed earlier in the week by Governor Christine Gregoire. Act II…
After a brief intermission, the dynamic Kokon Taiko drums took to the stage and provided the audience a spectacular performance in authentic Japanese tradition. They would later perform with the Seattle Seahawks, Blue Thunder drum line and White.

The show had Heart…music…
After Kokon Taiko, the Synergia NW audience was treated to a medley of Heart classics by Heart by Heart which featured the original rhythm section of one of Seattle’s seminal rock bands, drummer Mike Derosier and bassist, Steve Fossen, as well as guitarist Scotty Olson, Castle and former Heart guitarist Roger Fisher. Rounding out Heart by Heart was the amazing Somar Macek on vocals. Like last year, she was able to effectively channel the great Ann Wilson’s soul and range, while putting her own stamp on Heart classics. Macek brought the crowd to their collective feet with a moving and flawless rendition of “Alone.”

A briefcase full of Blues Traveler and more…
Musical Director and Synergia NW creative director and pianist / keyboardist, Michael McMorrow brought an all-star group out on stage, comprised of vocalist and mouth harp master, John Popper and drummer Brendan Hill, (McMorrow, had previously played with Hill in a group named Stolen Ogre), Scotty Olson, Fossen and Macek and were later joined by Derosier, who partnered with Hill and brought down the house with their "drum duel," during the group’s performance of The Beatles epic, "Golden Slumbers" / "Carry that Weight" / "The End." The song was highlighted with Popper's patented blues harp riffs and pyrotechnics.

Blues Traveler will be celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. They are working on a new record and will perform at the Snoqualmie Casino, August 5th.
SMI Radio had the opportunity to chat with Popper backstage prior to that show and will air next week during the SMI Radio Post Bumbershoot Special.

White on...
For several decadesYes have taken the stage after various arrangements of Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite.” In that great tradition the group White sauntered on stage after a live version of "Firebird Suite" courtesy of the Synergia Northwest Orchestra.

Alan White and his band White delivered a performance of "Ritual" (Nous Somme Du Soleil), a piece they performed last year with Tracy Bonham. Like last year, the show-stopping piece was one of the evening’s highlights. The band White features Robyn Dawn on vocals, Karl Haug on guitar, Steve Boyce on bass, keyboardist Jonathan Sindelman and a guest appearance by Music Aid Northwest VP and talented drummer, Reek Havok sitting in on percussion. As previously mentioned, The Kokon Taiko and Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder drum lines provided a dynamic and powerful percussive display during the drum break.

For those that have not heard Yes perform this number live, it was a real treat and executed with all of the beauty and passion that Yes themselves have delivered in subsequent performances throughout the years. Dawn’s vocals soared beautifully and effortlessly over the orchestra and band and brought new life to a Yes classic. White also performed songs from their first record as well as "Changes" from the Yes blockbuster LP, "90125."

Queensryche commands the stage...
Another great Seattle music export took to the stage in the form of Queensryche. In what has to be one of the most moving and beautiful classic rock tunes ever written and performed. The progressive hard rock unit performed the grand and sonically brilliant, "Silent Lucidity" with full orchestra. Geoff Tate’s four octave range was on full display, as he moved effortlessly across the stage with the confidence and swagger of a seasoned professional.

Tate and band performed the Queensryche and Pink Floyd inspired number flawlessly with the power of the Synergia Northwest Orchestra behind them. The band’s guitarist Michael Wilton was unavailable to play that night so Roger Fisher stepped in and brought his own signature guitar tones and licks to augment guitarist Parker Lundgren, in what was one of the most memorable and moving performances of the evening. The group performed three additional numbers including "Around the World" from of their forthcoming album, "Dedicated to Chaos", to be released on June 28th, with full orchestra, to the wonderment and delight of the audience. The band also performed "Rhythm of Hope from "Tribe" and "Real World" from the soundtrack of "Last Action Hero," a song co-written with the late orchestral composer, Michael Kamen.

Instant Karma is gonna get you...
In the true spirit of synergy and Synergia, The show ended with a rousing and loose performance of the John Lennon and Plastic Ono Band's "Instant Karma," a tune that Alan White played on with Lennon during the original studio recording. This number was an all-inclusive performance featuring not only all of the musical performers but the audience as well.
Closing thoughts...
Synergia Northwest was again an ambitious undertaking and the type of show that one must truly experience to really get the full magnitude and soul of what this show truly was and is. Trying to describe a show like this is like trying to describe what a really good chocolate ice cream cone tastes like. Words simply cannot do it justice. One just has to taste the delectable delight and savor the various flavors to truly get the full and rich experience.

This was the second year of the show so this year's version seemed to flow and run smoother than last year with some nice seques in between some of the various musical numbers. Indeed, Synergy is created when things work in concert together to create an outcome that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Synergia Northwest 2011 did just that and significantly a lot more, for a good cause... music education.

'Music Matters' license plates could help save school programs | KING5.com

SEATTLE -- Music matters!
That’s the battle cry for folks who want to save music programs in our schools in Washington state. It’s also the two words that will appear on special license plates that Governor Christine Gregoire signed into law Tuesday.

Inglemoor High School Orchestra instructor Jim Rice is getting one.

“You bet," he said. "To me it’s an exciting thing to drive around and say music matters."

The campaign to get the special license plates approved took three years. Now for $40 you can tell the world how you feel about music and at the same time help struggling music programs. It costs $30 to renew the plates.

“The last thing we need to do is raise the remaining amount of funds to get the project off the ground,” said Michael McMorrow from Synergia Northwest. “The state required $35,000 initially for some administrative costs and for some initial printing of the plates.”

That’s where this Friday’s concert comes in. It’s a benefit concert at Seattle’s Moore Theater. Proceeds from the concert will help pay for the license plate campaign and make those Music Matters plates a reality.

According to the organizers news release, “highlights of the evening will include performances of the Synergia Northwest Orchestra with Pacific Northwest rock recording artists including Grammy award-winning drummer Alan White ( yes, John Lennon) and his band WHITE, Shawn Smith of Brad, Tennis Pro, Heart by Heart with Heart founder Steve Fossen and Somar Macek, Brendan Hill of Blues Traveler, Michael McMorrow, special performances by the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drum Corp and Seattle Kokon Taiko.”

The hopes are high. Once those license plates are available, organizers predict a healthy revenue stream of at least $200,000 for the first three years to help music programs in Washington state schools.

“It can only get bigger and bigger as more people are award of the license plates,” said McMorrow who will also get one for himself and every driving member of his family, once the license plates are available.

But first things first. There’s the concert this Friday night to raise the rest of the funds needed to make this dream of helping music programs a reality.

"We've raised $16,000," said McMorrow. They now have $19,000 to go.

Governor Christine Gregoire and Synergia Northwest say music does matter

Olympia Washington, Tuesday, May 3rd will be a day that Music Aid Northwest will remember for years to come and hopefully the impact will be felt for years to come as well. At around 1:30pm in the afternoon yesterday, Governor Christine Gregoire signed House Bill 1329, also known as "The Music License Plate Bill." This will make it possible to create and sell “Music Matters” special license plates to benefit music education programs in state schools.

The new plates will cost around $40 the first year and about $30 for renewal, on top of the regular license tab fees. There are 24 special license plates available. Once signed by the governor, the law takes effect January 1st.

To help support school music programs through sales of a distinctive new Washington State license plate, available through the Washington State Department of Licensing. Monies raised through Synergia Northwest 2011 will help the campaign fund school music programs statewide in Washington as well as collect signatures needed to continue its development in the state legislative process.

This is something that members of the not for profit organization, Music Aid Northwest has been working on for years. Several local music artists have been heavily involved in lending their talent and efforts to get the bill passed. This Friday, May 6th at The Moore Theatre, Queensyche, Alan White and White, former members of Heart, John Popper and Brendan Hill from Blues Traveler will participate in Synergia Northwest 2011.

The concert will help the campaign fund school music programs statewide in Washington as well as collect signatures needed to continue its development in the state legislative process.

A number of bands and musical acts are coming together for a mammoth concert with one mission: to raise money for programs that teach our children to play and appreciate music. Synergia Northwest features a number of performers, from well-known rock musicians to students. A woodwind quintet made up of high school students across western Washington join the show to perform.

He has trotted the globe with Blues Traveler and makes his home in the Northwest. Next Friday night, May 6th, John Popper will join band mate Brendan Hill, along with a group of local music luminaries, to participate in Synergia Northwest in support of youth music education.

Popper and his band first came to national prominence with several appearances on Late Night with David Letterman. Letterman championed the band early in their career and introduced them as his favorite band prior to their performances on the show. Letterman's band leader Paul Shaffer has played on several of Blues Traveler recordings.

The band had breakout and mainstream success with their fourth album, titled Four, which was released in late 1994. The catchy pop single "Run-Around" became a popular hit and was followed by the snappy number, "Hook". "Run-Around" won a Grammy Award and broke a record for most weeks on the chart.

Blues Traveler appeared at Woodstock '94 and later became an opening act for The Rolling Stones. Popper has also made several appearances with Northwest resident Dave Matthews and the Dave Matthews Band.

The charismatic and witty Popper is also most known for his legendary live performances and a fan base that has followed the vocalist / harmonica virtuoso and the band with an almost religious fervor.

The musical paring of Popper and Hill is a great addition to a strong musical bill that will feature Queensryche, Yes man and Plastic Ono Band drummer, Alan White with his band White, Shawn Smith of Brad, Tennis Pro, Heart by Heart with Heart founder Steve Fossen and Somar Macek, Geoffrey Castle, Michael McMorrow, Roger Fisher, Scotty Olson and special performances by the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drum Corp and Seattle's Kokon Taiko. The Kokon Taiko performance continues Synergia Northwest's acknowledgement of the area's unique and diverse cultural heritage.

The Synergia Orchestra will also perform the brilliant and moving Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia composition"China Doll" from Georgia-based composer and educator Lee Johnson's "Dead Symphony #6: An Orchestral Tribute to the Music of the Grateful Dead". Synergia Northwest Orchestra and rock stars perform May 6, 2011 at 8:00 pm at the Moore Theater to help support Music Education through Music Matters, WMEA and Music Works Northwest!

“Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone…” laments the old Joni Mitchell song. When I moved to Washington in 1980 the Kent school district was the jewel of the northwest. They had highly rated schools and outstanding, nationally acclaimed music programs that have gradually been eroding away over the last two decades. Now to “save money they are talking about eliminating music, art and PE classes altogether in spite of the reams of research that concludes that student success can be tied directly to school music and private lesson participation. This pattern can happen here. Kent is the 4th largest district in the state of Washington!

Bellevue has outstanding schools. They remind me of the Kent district programs in the early 1990s with strong band, orchestra, choir and jazz programs district wide as well as comprehensive elementary music programs. These programs are in danger everywhere in Washington!

Senate-House Bill 1329 offers a self perpetuating source of funding for music programs state wide by creating a “Music Matters” special license plate. The bill is basically ready to pass if we can collect the 30,000 signatures needed to provide the state assurance that people will purchase these plates. The bill is endorsed by Washington Music Educators Association, by Music Works Northwest, Gerard Schwartz and many other community based music organizations.

On May 6 there is a special event produced by Synergia Northwest to support this bill as well as community music organizations including Music Works Northwest. This is a concert at Seattle’s Moore Theatre Featuring Alan White, Shawn Smith of Brad, Tennis Pro, Heart by Heart with Heart founder Steve Fossen, Somar Macek, Brendan Hill of Blues Traveler, Geoffrey Castle (a Music Works supporter), Michael McMorrow, Seattle Blue thunder, Queensryche and the Synergia Northwest Orchestra conducted by Dr. Nikolas Cole.

Alan White (Yes, Plastic Ono Band), bassist/vocalist Steve Boyce (Merkaba, Two Sheds Jackson), and guitarist Karl Haug (Treason) will perform together again for the first time as White since 2007. Backed by a 46 piece chamber orchestra, the original members will be joined by percussionist Reek Havok (has worked with just about everyone from The Pointer Sisters to Motley Crue), keyboardist Jonathan Sindelman (Parallels, Ajalon) and guest vocalist for this performance, Tracy Bonham (Grammy nominated musician, singer-songwriter) who will be also performing her own special set that night.

A phalanx of Northwest rock stars, including Alan White of Yes and four former members of Heart, will join a 46-piece orchestra for Synergia Northwest 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (May 15) at the Temple Theatre in Tacoma.

Proceeds from the event will help provide education, enrichment and performance opportunities for music students who lack financial resources. Read more about it here.
The lineup includes White and former Heart band members Howard Leese, Steve Fossen, Roger Fisher and Michael Derosier, as well as singer Somar Macek, violinist Geoffrey Castle, singer-guitarist Tracy Bonham and the Seahawks’ Blue Thunder drum troupe. Host is Marty Riemer of “The Marty Riemer Show.”

Leese, Fossen, Fisher and Derosier are performing together for the first time in three decades, with Macek on vocals.

New music concert will raise funds for music education

Synergia Northwest is a landmark event in the Tacoma area that combines contemporary, classical, established and up-and-coming Northwest musicians together under one roof.
On May 15, this benefit performance will take place at the Temple Theatre and will feature some big names in the music world, alongside local students representing the best in regional and high school musicians.
Michael McMorrow, a local musician, started formulating the idea two years ago with Alan White, former drummer for Yes and John Lennon.

“A couple members of Music Aid Northwest, (which I was a board member of at the time) and I talked about holding a concert that included orchestration. I shelved it for a while,” McMorrow said.

Being a performer, he started to create an idea with White and his wife about doing an event for youth music education and using an orchestra aspect.

McMorrow, friend Brett Smith (of Central Washington University) and White put their heads together and got in touch with the Washington Music Association and the Seattle Symphony and started to pin down how they could create a benefit. Beyond putting bands together and raising money, the men wanted to involve really great high-school musicians and get them involved in the process.

Performers for Synergia Northwest include White, who is going to be performing music from Yes; Howard Leese, guitarist, record producer and musical director; Tracy Bonham, the Eugene, Ore. native who is a Grammy-nominated musician and classically trained violinist and pianist; and Randy Hanson, a local guitar hero and internationally-known bassist, in addition to a forty plus piece orchestra.

The highlight of the event will be all of the original members of Heart performing together for first time in 30 years. They will perform big late ‘70s singles such as “Dreamboat Annie,” “Barracuda” and others. Leese was the only one who remained with Ann and Nancy Wilson after the other members left the group.

In addition, music of Beaverchief, (the late Fred Jamison), who in the early ‘80s, reached out and became a bridge with the “settler” culture of Seattle and eventually the people of Europe, will be performed by his son Freddy, brother George and Mark Nichols. They will perform Jamison’s native “Swan Song.” The host for the program will be Marty Riemer, renowned host from local rock music station, the Mountain radio.

Though Synergia Northwest has been two years in the making, and the event has amassed some fantastic performers and orchestra, the event coordinators have not forgotten the main cause of the event, which is the preservation of music education in the Northwest.

“The whole concept is centered around youth education and the money raised for these organizations and groups is great but we’re also involving students in the process,” McMorrow noted. “Maybe it will give them a life-changing moment playing next to professionals.”

Though it’s an often held belief that Seattle is the music capital of the state, McMorrow argues that Tacoma has a rich music history just like its sister city. This is one reason among others why Tacoma was picked as the city to hold the Synergia performance.

“We wanted to put it in a historic setting because this is a historic event,” he affirmed. “Tacoma always seems to get overlooked when everyone’s always going to Seattle, but Tacoma’s a part of musical history as much as Seattle.”

Proceeds raised from Synergia Northwest will be directed by Music Aid Northwest, a Washington state nonprofit organization, to the Young Musicians Excelling award funding grant program and to both the Tacoma and Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras scholarship and financial assistance programs.

The program will also benefit Music Matters, a fundraising effort to help support school music programs through sales of a distinctive new license plate, available through the Washington State Department of Licensing. These special license plates will be available to purchase by every car owner in Washington state.

The Young Musicians Excelling fund sponsors state and Northwest competitions every year and music students participate in these, McMorrow said. “In order to participate it costs money, and if there’s a student who’s a prodigy who can’t afford to, this program will enable he or she to do so,” he said.

McMorrow wanted to create a family-friendly event for those who share a love of music and for youth being involved in music. Thus, kids and parents can definitely come to this event together and both take something away from it. Individuals with an appreciation for the aforementioned established musicians, aspiring young musicians and those for the furthering of music and arts education in schools should attend Synergia Northwest to help ensure that music remains taught in schools locally for generations to come.

Welcome readers to the first installment of "MAN About Town". I will attempt, through a casual interview process, to shed light on some of the movers and shakers in the Northwest music scene.

How did you get into this crazy music business anyway? Didn’t you have anyone to warn you against it?

No in fact I was encouraged by my mother and grandfather who were both musicians. By age 11 I was already writing music and playing for them on the piano. At 12 I won a statewide Young Composer Competition in California. I never looked back from there.

I know you still play music, what’s going on with that?

Well eventually I found myself in a band called the Yarddogs where I continued writing original music. We developed that band to a point where we were playing with bands such as Delbert McClinton, Jefferson Airplane, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart and Paul Rogers to name a few. I was always more into original music than playing in cover bands. While I was on tour with the HORDE Festival I met Brendan Hill of Blues Traveler, we hit it off, and decided to start a band called Stolen Ogre. That band went on to earn various national acclaim and we won the Relix Magazine 2005 Jamoff competition. “Icing”, a song I composed, became one of the songs picked to be on their nationally distributed compilation CD. We toured, especially in the Northeast, received significant college radio airplay and were highlighted as one of the top bands to watch for amongst unsigned bands in the country. I continue writing, recording and performing with various projects.

I saw you play at the MAN Tsunami Relief concert back in 2004 and you were playing with an all-star cast of musicians. Tell me about some of these collaborations.

As you know I was on the MAN board at that time and was more than happy to participate. Of course I asked John Popper from Blues Traveler to join us. My band Stolen Ogre played and then there was the all-star jam which featured Alan White and Roger Fisher and I played keys for that too. That was a blast. Over the years I have performed with Ann and Nancy Wilson and the Lovemongers, Ricki Lee Jones, Taj Mahal and of course Blues Traveler. I have also collaborated in the production of the nationally syndicated host Bob Rivers "Twisted Radio" from KISW (now with KZOK) radio in Seattle. I have been fortunate to have been involved in countless projects and events and have made many lasting friendships right here in the Northwest. I am also currently on the airstaff over at WARM 106.9FM here in Seattle.

What is Synergia Northwest?

I am very interested in music education and experiences for our youth. I want to make sure kids can get a chance to enjoy music and even pursue careers in music. It is a part of a well rounded education. Synergia NW is a concert I am planning for 2010. It will be used to raise awareness and funds for youth music programs. I want to bring together music students and professional musicians playing classical and contemporary music.

Have you produced events of this nature before?

I have been involved with and produced many events over the last 20 years. I produced the Support the Troops Concert for Peace Benefit at the Paramount theatre in 1991. I had the Lovemongers, Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains and my band the Yarddogs. This was a fundraiser for the international and American Red Cross during the gulf war crisis. I was also involved in Harmony for Humanity, a national violence prevention program, Heartland Relief Fund, Seattle Firefighters benefit, Picnic on the Green Snoqualmie Winery, Puget Soundkeepers Benefit and Winter Warmth Concert for homeless children

Tell me more about Synergia.

I am partnering in this project with Dr. Bret P. Smith, Assistant Professor, Central Washington University’s Department of Music who is an educator and conductor specializing in instrumental music education. I also have the support of Seattle Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Young Musicians Excelling Chair, Maestro Gerard Schwarz, Young Musicians Excelling, the Washington Music Educators Association and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra.

I will be teaming up with Alan White and Dr. Smith to collaborate on original music for the event. It will showcase various musicians, young and old, students and professionals, across all formats and styles. I will highlight local youth and public school orchestras as well as original composers. Net proceeds will go through MAN to be directed to various music programs around Washington.

We are excited about, and looking forward to, this concert. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help out. We would be honored to accept the proceeds and distribute them to the selected beneficiaries.
