It was the talk of the town and the nation when Texas Governor Rick Perry made comments last week at a anti-tax day protest about the ability of Texas to possibly secede from the union.

Perry said outside of Austin’s city hall April 15th, “You know my hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb its nose at the American people, who knows what may come out of that.”

Phish Sues to Block Bootleggers at Concerts

HAMPTON - Phish hasn’t played on tour in nearly five years, but it’s already trying to establish a new tone for its concerts.

The band wants to crack down on the hawkers who sell the band’s merchandise without permission.

Phish — the Vermont-based rock band kicking off a reunion tour at the Hampton Coliseum this weekend — wants a federal judge to bar the sales of bootleg T-shirts, hats, jackets, posters, calendars, books and numerous other items bearings the band’s name and trademarks.

"Since the inception of Phish’s popularity in the 1990s, Phish’s concert tours have been plagued by individuals who sell unauthorized merchandise near, at and sometimes inside a concert venue," says the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Newport News by Phish’s attorney, Amy G. Marino of Williams Mullen in Richmond.

The suit asks Judge Raymond Jackson to issue a temporary injunction banning the sale of nonlicensed goods. A hearing on the request will be held Thursday — just in time for the three days of concerts.

School Officials Apologize to Student over Shirt Saga

BIG BEAR CITY - Staff at Big Bear High School violated a student’s Constitutional right to free speech when they ousted her from class and ordered her to remove her T-shirt sporting the message "Prop. 8 Equals Hate," officials said.

Carole Ferraud, superintendent of Bear Valley Unified School District, issued a written apology to 16-year-old sophomore and class president Mariah Jimenez in order to stem a lawsuit against the school district by Jimenez and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Jimenez wore the tye-dyed shirt with the anti-Prop. 8 message to school Nov. 3, the day before California voters approved the controversial ballot measure that precludes homosexual couples from marrying legally in the state of California.

"The fact that you were put in a position to have to make a choice between removing your shirt or remaining in the administration office was, in fact, a violation of your freedom of speech," Ferraud wrote to Jimenez in a letter dated Jan. 12.

Présentation : Anyone who has honestly reflected on what they know about hiring, will tell you that no matter how locked-down you think you have it, you dont. There is still way too much left to chance and way too much that you just dont know. To avoid this, companies that care about preserving their culture will sometimes adopt a "default deny" approach. It’s ok to miss a potentially good hire rather than to take on a bad one. This isn’t silly geek risk aversion.. It’s because one bad hire can do amazing damage to a culture (an area bad hires can be amazingly productive in). We have been hiring and interviewing people for about 7 years and have learned many lessons along the way but without fail, the one that works best for me, is the T-Shirt test. The T-Shirt test is simply to ask yourself: "how will i feel standing at a conference, with this guy next to me wearing my company T-Shirt". If you don’t like the thought, you shouldn’t make the hire.

New York Newspaper Guild Charges Reuters Over T-Shirt Ban

The New York Newspaper Guild has filed two unfair labor practice charges against Thomson Reuters, saying the media company unfairly barred workers from their long-standing practice of wearing red union t-shirts to show solidarity during labor contract negotiations.

T-Shirt Hell Is Folding Due to Complaining ‘Idiots’

T-Shirt Hell, the infamous online purveyor of obnoxious casual wear, is going out of business because its owner doesn’t "feel like dealing with idiots anymore."

The site, which sells T-shirts with charming slogans like "Tickle my fancy testicles" and "It’s not gay if you beat them up afterwards," generates tons of hate mail, according to site operator Sunshine Megatron. In an obscenity-laced goodbye screed posted Monday, he claims that he’s misunderstood, and rants that he "can’t take the stupidity anymore."

"Rather than cater to the masses, I’m just going to stop making shirts," Megatron writes. "It’s not enjoyable anymore and I have enough money to move on to something more rewarding. Maybe I’ll start my own hooker farm."

Megatron says he won’t sell the 8-year-old business, which he claims still sells 3,000 T-shirts a week despite the recent economic downturn, because no new owner would do the concept justice.

I once had a faculty colleague whose clothing supply chain ended at his back fence. Harry and his wife Priscilla raised angora goats on their farm not far from Washington, and at certain times of year they would shear the goats, and then spin the wool into yarn and knit it into clothing. This was more than 20 years ago, and while Harry and Priscilla in one sense lived a step back in time, in another sense they were early pioneers in the enthusiasm for all things local that has gripped western consumers today.

I saw a sheep shearing once, and I do not need to see it again: The sheep not only tried to bolt but made blood-curdling noises as the buzzing razor approached. The sheep were clearly unhappy to give up their clothing to have it turned into someone else’s. The supply chain was not pretty, and I’d just as soon not think about it.

For most of us, of course, our clothing is the product of a global supply chain: the sheep or cotton plant might be in one country, the yarn spinners in another, and the weavers or knitters and sewing machine operators perhaps in a third or fourth. While as little as 25 years ago most of this activity took place within a country’s borders – often within a single vertically integrated firm – today production is instead the result of fluid global networks.

Much of the anti-globalisation sentiment of the past decade has been directed at these global networks, whose activities are often described with the politically charged term of “outsourcing.” While perhaps 10 years ago the anti-globalisation movement seemed to be a fringe element, public opinion surveys today show that skepticism about international trade is a widespread and growing “main street” phenomenon.

Judge Rejects Student’s Blog Claim, Allows T-Shirt Issue to Proceed

A former Connecticut high school student who was punished for a blog entry lost her First Amendment claim in federal court over her online speech but won the ability to pursue another, less-publicized part of her case involving censorship of student T-shirts at her school.

Avery Doninger’s case has garnered national attention in part because it presents a fascinating student-speech issue that has not been resolved by the legal system — what legal standard should a court use to evaluate a student-speech claim that arises from online speech created off-campus. In Doninger’s case, on Jan. 15 U.S. District Judge Mark R. Kravitz once again sided with school officials on the online issue, though he allowed the T-shirt claim to proceed to trial in his court.

Student Arrested, Suspended for Wearing Offensive T-Shirt to School

A Bryson Middle School eighth-grader was arrested and suspended from school after he wore a T-shirt to school Thursday with a KKK symbol on it.

The student showed up to lunch with two shirts on and briefly lifted his top shirt to reveal a white T-shirt with the symbol, slogan and picture of a noose on it. The shirt “caused a tremendous amount of disruption in the cafeteria,” an incident report stated.

The student was immediately suspended from school and recommended for expulsion, the report said.

Later in the day, students passed notes saying some were planning to wear similar shirts today. Principal Phillip Davie addressed the involved students yesterday.

Teen Sues to Wear T-Shirt at School

A Waxahachie High School sophomore is suing the school district for the right to wear a T-shirt supporting John Edwards as a 2008 presidential candidate.

The Liberty Legal Institute on Tuesday announced that it was suing the Waxahachie Independent School District on behalf of Pete Palmer and his parents.

According to an institute representative, the district violated Palmer’s constitutional right to free speech when it sent him home from school in October for wearing the shirt, threatening him with suspension if he did so again.

Police Arrest Anti-War Protester, 80, at Mall

An 80-year-old church deacon was removed from the Smith Haven Mall yesterday in a wheelchair and arrested by police for refusing to remove a T-shirt protesting the Iraq War.

Police said that Don Zirkel, of Bethpage, was disturbing shoppers at the Lake Grove mall with his T-shirt, which had what they described as "graphic anti-war images." Zirkel, a deacon at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, said his shirt had the death tolls of American military personnel and Iraqis - 4,000 and 1 million - and the words "Dead" and "Enough." The shirt also has three blotches resembling blood splatters.

Court Says Man Can Continue To Sell Tasteless Walmart Parody T-Shirts

Score one for the First Amendment:

A Conyers man may continue criticizing Wal-Mart with parodies on T-shirts that compare the retail giant to the Holocaust and al-Qaida terrorists, a federal judge has ruled.
Timothy Batten in Atlanta ruled that Charles Smith may maintain his Web sites, www.walocaust.com and www.walqaeda.com. Smith also may continue to sell novelty, satirical merchandise that criticizes the company, the judge said.

"It’s great," Smith, 50, from Conyers, said Tuesday about the ruling. "I’m relieved. Whenever you go into litigation against such a big company, you never know the outcome."

"This is a resounding victory for First Amendment rights and sends a clear message to big corporations that would try to use their deep pockets to intimidate and silence their critics," said one of Smith’s attorneys, Paul Alan Levy of Public Citizen.

Swimming: Cavic Banned for Revealing Political Slogan on T-Shirt

The Serbian gold medal-winner, Milorad Cavic, has been banned from further individual events at the European swimming championships for wearing a T-shirt with a political slogan. Serbia’s swimming federation was fined €7,000 (£5,453) after Cavic breached competition rules during his 50m butterfly-victory ceremony earlier this week, the European swimming’s governing body, LEN, said.

Cavic, based in the United States, wore the T-shirt bearing the words "Kosovo is Serbia" in his own language on Wednesday after breaking the European 50 butterfly record for the second time in two days to win Serbia’s first European swimming title. Serbia are not due to swim the two remaining men’s relays, so he is effectively out of the championships.

Polling irregularities mar Ohio’s primary election on March 4

When Bradley Tucker, 25, arrived to vote at his polling location in Mt. Healthy early Tuesday, March 4, he was ready to support his candidate. Tucker showed his support by wearing a Barack Obama campaign sweatshirt and a matching button. He was ready to vote.

He wasn’t ready to be confronted by a poll worker for his choice of clothing.

"When he came up to me, I was kind of surprised, because I had never dealt with this question while voting," said Mr. Tucker. "I could see if I was standing in line, chanting ‘Obama,’ but I was just standing there waiting my turn and not speaking to anyone."

Mr. Tucker said a poll worker at the Lakeknoll Drive polling location instructed him to cease campaigning and informed him he would have to remove his sweatshirt prior to being allowed to cast his ballot. Mr. Tucker said he was not campaigning and refused to take off his sweatshirt, and was eventually permitted to vote by another poll worker without having to change his attire.

If you’ve wearing a Hillary Clinton T-shirt or a Barack Obama button, you’ll probably be told to cover it up before voting in Montgomery County, said Steve Harsman, director of the county Board of Elections.

The law in Ohio prohibits electioneering within 100 feet of the polls, and Harsman said that extends to buttons or apparel that endorse a specific candidate or take a position on an issue on the ballot. Leafletting is also prohibited within 100 feet of the polls.

Student files lawsuit after order not to wear statement of support for war, military uncle

First, there was the piece of paper that could go off, then it was the "loaded" ballpoint, and now there’s the silk-screened image on a T-shirt that poses a danger.

A Pennsylvania student who wore a T-shirt to school to express his support for the American war on terror and to honor his uncle, a warrior in the battle, has been told he cannot do that.

At issue is a decision by Donald Miller III to wear to his school in the Penn Manor School District a T-shirt with the following slogans on the front and back:

"Volunteer Homeland Security" and "Special issue – Resident – Lifetime License United States Terrorist Hunting Permit – Permit No. 91101 Gun Owner – No Bag Limit"

The shirt also had a silk-screened image of a handgun silhouette. And all that, according to the school, broke several rules.
