Sri Lanka were the most consistent team in last year's World Twenty20, moving into the final unbeaten before falling to an inspired Pakistan outfit at Lord's. This time they are left knowing only a victory against Zimbabwe will keep them in the tournament, and even then it will require a nervous wait for the outcome of the final match in the group.

Ireland : Minnow or Giant Killer

Ireland's recent form has been patchy, losing 3-0 against a West Indies XI but their overall record is good. In last year's tournament in England, Ireland beat Bangladesh in their opening game at Trent Bridge and put in strong performances against Sri Lanka and eventual winners Pakistan.

Their path to this year's event was smooth, beating all but an emotionally-charged Afghanistan in Dubai as they progressed to the final with an injury-depleted squad. Though the usual names - Trent Johnston, Niall O'Brien, William Porterfield - were crucial, Ireland uncovered some young players with star potential. Spinners play a central role in Twenty20 cricket and 17-year-old left-arm spinner George Dockrell was pivotal in their semi-final win against Netherlands in the qualifiers.

Strengths and weaknesses

Ireland's instinctive competitiveness seems to add an extra dimension to their game and they are a well-drilled bunch, having been in the West Indies preparing for longer than any of the other sides. However the batting remains overly reliant on Niall O'Brien and the bowling resources look sparse if Rankin fails to find form immediately after a long lay-off.

Key men

Trent Johnston was captain on the heady St Patrick's Day win over Pakistan three years ago and despite passing on the reins to William Porterfield he remains the team's pivotal man. He was their joint leading wicket-taker in the qualifying tournament and has top-scored in Ireland's last four Twenty20 matches.

William Porterfield made his 100th appearance for Ireland during the recent series against West Indies XI, and as captain and opening batsmen he has a crucial role setting the tone. He frequently got starts in the qualifying tournament but failed to pass 35. Ireland will need more from him if they are to make it to the Super Eights.

X-factor

Lurking in the Ireland side are a couple of gifted youngsters who are unknown to most on the world stage. Paul Stirling already has a contract with Middlesex and unlike Eoin Morgan, who followed a similar route from Dublin to Lord's, has committed his future to Ireland. He is still raw but could bring dynamism previously missing from the top order.

আমার কিন্তু এমনিতে ক্যারিবিয়ান মাটিতে ক্রিকেট দেখতে ভাল লাগে আর আজ সেখানেই শুরু হচ্ছে ছোট ক্রিকেটের বড় আকর্ষন। ওয়েষ্ট ইন্ডিজের গায়ানায় শ্রীলংকা ও নিউজিল্যান্ড মুখোমুখি হচ্ছে টি২০ক্রিকেটের বিশ্বকাপের প্রথম বড় ম্যাচ।এই দুটো দল ফেভারিটের তালিকায় না থাকলেও যে কোন সময় চমকে দেবার ক্ষমতা রাখে।

অন্য ম্যাচে মুখোমুখি হচ্ছে স্বাগতিক ওয়েষ্ট ইন্ডিজ ও জায়ান্ট কিলার আয়ারল্যান্ড। আয়ারল্যান্ডকে মনে আছে তো ? গতবার বাংলাদেশকে হারিয়ে দেয়া সেই বাংলাদেশ । এবারও যথারীতি টগবগে । প্র্যাকটিস ম্যাচে আরেক চমক আফগানিস্তানের কাছে হারলেও আয়ারল্যান্ড কিন্তু বেশ আশাপ্রদ একটা দল এই ছোট ক্রিকেটের আসরে। যে কোন বড় দলকে চমকে দিতে অন্তত: আয়ারল্যান্ড, আফগানিস্তান ও জিম্বাবুয়ে কে ভুলে যাবেন নি কিন্তু। এরা যেকোন সময় যে কোন অঘটন ঘটিয়ে দিতে পারে। এই তো প্র্যাকটিস ম্যাচে জিম্বাবুয়ে অষ্ট্রেলিয়াকে হারাল।

Strengths and weaknesses of West Indies

West Indies are not short on batsmen who can clear the boundary. Brett Lee is still waiting for Gayle's strike from last year to come down somewhere near The Oval, while Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are also fearsome strikers of the ball. One area of concern will be the pace-bowling department which is still without Fidel Edwards while Jerome Taylor is nursing his way back from injury. There is also the fear that if things start to go wrong they can unravel very quickly. In a short tournament like this you can be gone before it's barely started.

Key men

Of course it's difficult to look past Chris Gayle because the team responds to their captain but Dwayne Bravo, despite a pretty woeful IPL where he scored 61 runs in eight innings and claimed four wickets at 57 for Mumbai Indians, is a wonderful cricketer and is the embodiment of the spirit that the team so desperately needs. He will want to reconfirm his credentials and should rise to the big occasion. Often outstanding at the death with the ball, he is among the finest fielders on the world.

X-factor

Sulieman Benn doesn't come across as the most natural of Twenty20 cricketers; he isn't the best of fielders and can't offer much with the bat but with the ball he could be a vital weapon if the pitches remain slow. Don't be surprised if he takes the new ball, as he did against Zimbabwe when he finished with the extraordinary figures of 4 for 6.

Dwayne Bravo can win matches with any of the three disciplines and West Indies need him to fire

Bangladesh's captain and coach, Shakib Al Hasan and Jamie Siddons, are targeting a victory against Pakistan in their opening game of the ICC World Twenty20 on May 1.

"I think there is a possibility for us to beat Pakistan because, at the moment, Pakistan cricket is unsettled with different kinds of crisis and injury problems," Shakib said in Mirpur, prior to the team's departure. "So we have to do something in the first match if we want to play the second round, but that doesn't mean we play bad cricket against other group opponents Australia."

Siddons also felt Pakistan was Bangladesh's best chance but said they would have to play sharp cricket nonetheless. "Both Pakistan and Australia are tough opponents but realistically we have a chance against Pakistan but in that case we need to play well," he said. "The preparation is good and I must say it was much better than the last occasion. The players got the opportunity to play two tournaments - PCL and NCL - recently, which is really good. Some players missed out on runs but I think the wicket was low and slow. But definitely the boys will get consistent pace while playing in Barbados."

Bangladesh had a poor World Twenty20 in England in 2009, getting eliminated in the first round after losing group matches to India and Ireland. Shakib, however, was also pleased with his team's preparation this time. "Nothing could have been better than playing matches before any tournament. I think our preparation is good this time and most importantly we have been playing good cricket for last few months and hope it will continue in West Indies and as well as in the England tour."

Established in 1871, the Kensington Oval in Barbados has evolved into one of the finest grounds in the Caribbean. Known as "the Oval" to the locals, the Kensington cricket ground has been witness to seminal moments of cricket history throughout its 135 years of existence.

After being home to the Pickwick Cricket Club since 1882, the Kensington Oval played host to the first England touring side in 1895 led by Slade Lucas. It was also the venue of West Indies' first Test in 1930 when the West Indies and England played to a draw. Despite the typical Caribbean track with pace and bounce, Kensington Oval has been favorable to batsmen.

The Kensington Oval ground has been subjected to an extensive renovation regime in line with the preparations for the 2007 ICC World Cup. Almost all the stands have been rebuilt and the new stadium is expected to accommodate 32000 spectators. Besides hosting six Super 8 matches, the Kensington Oval stadium will be the venue for the 2007 ICC World Cup final.
