Latinos and LGBT Community Working Together on Immigration Reform

Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) told a packed room of Netroots Nation attendees yesterday that the Obama administration needs to support LGBT families.

The remarks were made at the liberal bloggers conference during a talk on immigration and the power of Latino vote. The room was full of mostly Latino activists and Latino civil rights organizations, so it was interesting and encouraging to hear him mention LGBT families during a talk focused on the Latino community. Both communities have had somewhat strained relationships in the past and that strain was intensified this past December when DADT passed and the DREAM Act failed on the same day.

The appearance at Netroots was part of a 20-city immigration tour that Gutierrez has embarked upon to keep up the pressure on the president and the congress in prioritizing comprehensive immigration reform. The Chicago congressman mentioned that he and his staff have made it a point to reach out to the LGBT community during their tour and have asked members of the community to join Latinos in the fight to get some real movement on immigration.

"The LGBT community has families that the Obama administration should recognize, too," said Gutierrez.

Freeing Myself from Sexual Repression

Those moments when we realize that we are always learning are the most humbling and most important for me.

I've been out of the closet since I was 22 and it's safe to say that I'm very secure in my identity and very open-minded about sexuality, which I have explored ad nauseum. I have always carried this open-mindedness as a badge of honor given the often sex-negative society we live in today. Imagine my surprise this past weekend when I discovered a new side of my sexual awareness I never knew existed. I had a sexual awakening.

Americans Can Learn from Africans in the Fight for Sexual Freedom

Recent polling suggests that Americans are becoming increasingly accepting of same-sex couples and their families. The second poll in as many months shows that.

This is a remarkable statistic and is no doubt a result of all the work that thousands of gay rights activists and allies have done in laying the groundwork to change hearts and minds. The fight for equality, however, should be examined through the lens of the larger fight for sexual freedom in general. We as LGBT people are a sexual minority and as we help this country's citizens progress in their view of the definition of what love means, we are also exceptionally poised to help them acknowledge their own sexuality and that sexual freedom is a fundamental human right.

For Kushaba Moses Mworeko, or Moses, as his friends call him, the struggle for sexual freedom has meant having to leave his home country or face potential deadly consequences. Moses' remarkable story was first told earlier this year when he was featured as a panelist at the American Prayer Hour press conference. The American Prayer Hour was an alternative interfaith service held in protest on the day of The Family's National Prayer Breakfast. Moses, who hails from Uganda, talked about his experience as a closeted gay man in Africa. His story was especially significant as Uganda's legislature was, and still is, considering passage of the homophobic Anti-Homesexuality Bill of 2009.

The pictures of Moses speaking with a paper bag over his head to hide his identity while he spoke at the National Press Club have become iconic images.

President Obama: Uganda Kill-the-Gays Bill 'Odious'

While President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton addressed the invite-only ticketed National Prayer Breakfast, Americans gathered in cities around the country to protest the event. The American Prayer Hour was organized to protest the involvement of American politicians and religious leaders (many of whom were no doubt present at the Breakfast) in helping Uganda's legislature craft the notorious Anti-Homosexuals bill.

Just down the road from the Washington Hilton, where the The Family's event was held, attendees of the the D.C.'s American Prayer Hour gathered at Calvary Baptist Church and joined 17 other cities in the collective protest.

Supporters of Anti-gay Legislation in Uganda Hosting President Obama Thursday

Heads of state and other dignitaries will gather this week to attend the annual National Prayer Breakfast. A highly secretive Christian fundamentalist organization called The Family hosts the event each year. The Family has ties to major players in our government and also boasts such members as the embattled and adulterous Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) and the governor from South Carolina, Mark Sanford. Who also admitted to having a mistress last year.

The event has happened for several years and usually without much fanfare, but this year attendees and the rest of the country can expect much more hoopla over the event. That's because a coalition of civil rights organizations are calling on the President and other invited guests to skip the annual event to protest the involvement of members of The Family who had a direct hand in crafting Uganda's horrendous and deeply violent Anti-Homosexual bill. Up until recently this bill included execution as punishment for violation of the law. It was only amended after much arm-twisting by the international community. The new legislation does nothing, however, to address the other draconian elements that look to be codified.

The Accidental Vegan

Last week marked the end of the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program that I started back on New Year's Day. I made some resolutions to not only shed a few extra pounds but to make a concerted effort to eat more nutritious foods and learn how to become a better cook. In short, I made a resolution to make a lifestyle change.

I am happy to report that I made it through the program without faltering once and I even managed to lose a few pounds, though I'm still aiming to lose more. It is pretty astounding just how much saturated fat and cholesterol I have cut out by removing meat, dairy and eggs from my diet. The program was certainly a challenge that I highly recommend to anyone, even if they don't have the intention of keeping it up. You might be surprised at just how much you won't miss the things everyone else thinks you will.

As the end date drew nearer, I started to field the question of whether I would keep up with the diet once I completed the program. The fact that I signed up to do this in the first place was a big enough surprise to folks, never mind that I actually completed it. I wasn't too focused on the question, though, as I just wanted to keep my momentum going and make it to the end. Instead, I decided that I would just keep up with the diet until I made a decision.

Now, almost one week later I have made up my mind: I will remain committed to a vegan diet. Though, my reasons for staying vegan have less to do with the health benefits of such a diet (and, I assure you those benefits are substantial and include numerous benefits for mental health) than they do with how this diet has affected my relationship with Jim. It has actually brought us closer together.

In Sickness and in Health

I've never been prouder to live in Washington, D.C. than this week when the DC Council voted to recognize same-sex marriages. Come next spring, D.C. will be this country's only major city in which marriage equality is the law, Congress' intervention notwithstanding.

It was with great anticipation that we attended a rally on eve of the historic vote, as my friends and I have been following this closely for the past year. It was inspiring to hear our elected officials talk about their support for marriage equality, especially the members who took a political risk for such support. I was also smacked with a dose of reality when I though about my own very long engagement to Jim. This is actually going to happen, I kept thinking. No more excuses, he is yours and you are his and you're going to be married.

I think it's a tad early to start planning any ceremony, and I know Jim would agree that our ceremony will probably bear little resemblance to any traditional straight ceremony, including the exchanging of vows. There is one tradition, though, I want to incorporate into our ceremony: the promise to support Jim in sickness and in health.

Finding Happiness at Halloween: Lifting the Veil off Mental Health

Halloween is my partner Jim's favorite holiday. He loves it more than Thanksgiving and more than Christmas. Around this time of year, it's not uncommon for our apartment to smell of baked pumpkin seeds and hot cider infused with mulling spices. Indeed, fall is when Jim seems to be the happiest.

But what if that which normally brings happiness and joy fails to do so? How do we reclaim that feeling? What if the only way to feel happiness seems to be only through unhealthy means?

I have been asking myself these questions because I have been helping Jim reclaim that feeling about Halloween. This holiday season has been a little bittersweet since it has arrived on the heels of a mild manic episode. As he has been coming down, he has become almost nostalgic for the time when he wasn't in treatment and when his mania seemed to run wild.

A friend of mine visited Chicago recently and we were talking about his trip when he got back to DC. Then he asked me why the gays he talked to in the nation's third largest city had no idea what was happening here in D.C. on Oct. 11.

Not knowing how to respond I said that I'm not on the ground in Chicago so I don't know what local folks there are doing to publicize the national event. This news was troubling to both of us as we have been following this march since we both heard about it a few months ago.

Full disclosure: I was originally opposed to the idea of march on Washington when I first learned about it. I have since changed my mind and have even volunteered my time to help out with the D.C. host committee.

This weekend we will be a spending our final summer holiday on the Delaware shore, a popular destination for many Washingtonians. We were lucky enough to be invited once again to a friend's house, and the rest of the group making their way to the beach will surely make the weekend a success.

While getting ready for our beach getaway, I started thinking about how different things are this year versus last. This time last year, Jim was still reeling from the effects of a week in the hospital, and we were both trying to figure out what his illness meant for us. Jim's new medication regiment was also still fairly new, and he was dealing with the side effects that inevitably come with such drugs. I was also busy thinking about what I should change about myself.

Much has happened in the past year and as we say goodbye to summer 2009, I would like to reflect on a couple of things I have learned.

Lifting the Veil off Mental Health: The Art of Negotiation

I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say that negotiation is a part of every romantic relationship. That dynamic changes quite dramatically, however, when one of the parties involved is bipolar.

One of the questions both Jim and I have been fielding a lot lately has to do with how we negotiated doing this project. There is very obviously a level of disclosure that could create stress for all involved and I am always mindful of that whenever I sit down to write.

Where this blogging project is concerned, though, the negotiation process was fairly benign and focused more on what I should say rather than what I should not. Like I said in my last post, this is part of my pursuit of understanding bipolar disorder. And, if there is one thing that Jim wants from me it is empathy for how he feels and an understanding of why his moods are sometimes out of his control. This idea, while it required Jim's permission, was not as contentious as those questioning may have thought and it has provided the perfect platform for the outcome Jim and I have both been working toward.

Lifting the Veil off Mental Health: Life with a Bipolar Partner

Bil announced a couple of weeks ago that I was going to be blogging here about my experience living with my partner, Jim, who suffers from bipolar disorder.

Since Jim's first hospitalization, I've been on a personal journey to better understand my partner and this illness. I'm still learning and there are still trying moments when I have to do my best to remember it's Jim's bipolar talking, not him. It's a day-to-day process, but hopefully, my thoughts here will help other couples (especially the spouses who aren't bipolar), gay or straight, who are also doing their best to learn to live with this illness.

To fully appreciate how I arrived at the start of this journey to understanding, I think it's best to start from the beginning.
