They proclaim to be one of the "most radical churches in the Michiana area."

Their mission statement:

Raising up a radical church based on the book of Acts by maintaining and proclaiming a high standard of truth which produces maturity and brings freedom while taking the heart of God to the nations.

Advocates are hoping to bring same-sex marriage to a vote as early as next year. As a former native and frequent visitor of New York State this comes as good news.

Three months ago the NY Senate failed to muster enough votes to pass same-sex marriage. 61%, which included an embarrassing eight Democrats, voted against equality. There is work to be done.

Tony Perkins - Christians are being censored by the government

Religious-right fundamentalist groups are holding up a letter sent to Tony Perkins, president Family Research Council, that rescinded an invitation to speak at Andrews Air Force Base National Pray Luncheon as "Christian censorship"; an infringement on first amendment rights to freedom of religion and speech.

According to CBN the The Joint Base Andrews Chaplain's Office released the following statement to CBN News in response:

"The Joint Base Andrews Chaplain's Office sponsors a voluntary annual prayer luncheon, focusing this year on deployed personnel, families and prayer. The Chaplain's Office retracted Mr. Perkins' invitation after his recent public comments made many who planned to attend the event uncomfortable. This was a local decision made by the Chaplain's Office who wanted the luncheon to be inclusive for the entire base community. The Chaplain's Office respects and defends Mr. Perkins right to express his opinions, and regrets any inconvenience to him. We thank and respect him for his prior military service."

Charter for Compassion trumps religious-right agenda

Gary Glenn, executive director American Family Association - Michigan, was interviewed Monday by WEYI-TV Channel 25 (Flint). Mr. Glenn and mid-Michigan right-wing fundamentalist religious leaders filed lawsuit through the Ann Arbor Thomas More Law Center challenging the "constitutionality" of the federal hate crimes law. According to Mr. Glenn the new hate crimes law can be used against them for saying "homosexuality is a sin". Seriously.

"We filed a lawsuit to protect religious free speech rights of individuals who want to continue to speak out for their religious values."

Mr. Glenn's AFA-Michigan website points to a five year old 2005 Saginaw News article which quotes Jeffrey Montogmery, former executive director of the Detroit Triangle Foundation, as saying:

...crimes against homosexuals are on the rise. He says "The vocal anti-gay activists should be held accountable as accessories to these crimes because, many times, it is their rhetoric that led the perpetrators to believe that their crimes are O.K."

Mr. Glenn, you and your colleagues are safe; saying homosexuality is a sin will not land you in jail. However, if you want to spew from the pulpit the extreme rhetoric like that of Pastor Anderson, then you should be more ashamed of yourself then worried about your religious free speech rights.

Third gay adoption in Florida despite ban

A gay adoption in Florida was granted to a lesbian couple by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Maria Sampedro-Iglesia. This makes three in Florida despite the state-wide ban gay men and lesbians adopting. The story behind this adoption is heartwarming and just.

According to the Miami Herald story:

With the blessing of her large extended family, Vanessa Alenier took custody of an infant relative who had been seized by child welfare workers. She moved him into a yellow nursery with a blond wood crib, a blue-striped carpet and a mobile.

When she asked the state to for permission to adopt him, the application included a simple question.

Are you gay?

Alenier, 34, said she did not want to begin her journey as a parent with a lie. So she told the truth -- despite Florida's 33-year-old law banning gay men and lesbians from adopting.

The adoption was granted. What Judge Sampedro-Iglesia had to say in her ruling is after the jump.

Baptist Press assistant editor clueless on DADT

Having served in the United States Air Force 11 years gives me some credibility on the subject of Don't Ask Don't Tell. That said, I think "Close quarters make military policy opposing gay service necessary, experts say" written by the assistant editor of the Baptist Press, Michael Foust, is one of the dumbest pieces of journalism I've ever read. Check this out:

Military experts and social conservatives are criticizing President Obama's goal of allowing homosexuals to serve openly in the military, saying the armed forces' inherently close quarters would make any change in policy similar to forcing male and female personnel to live together.

Seriously? U.S. straight, gay, lesbian, men, and women service members are already living in close quarters. There were also several instances during the Iraqi war when the British, who've allowed their members to serve openly since 2000, and U.S. military exchanged personnel. During coalition campaigns, it is common for armed forces from one country to provide support for another country's forces.

The "experts" and "social conservatives" Faust refers to must be living with their heads in the sand.

Disunity brewing within Tea Party?

The Tea Party Convention slated to take place next month in Nashville appears to be unraveling. Two major Tea Party supporters, National Precinct Alliance and American Liberty Alliance, have withdrawn their support for the convention. The Tea Party is losing "Tea Bags" as it were. This doesn't bode well for a grassroots movement that is seeking to recapture America.

What is souring the tea? According to Tea Party activists a major source of contention is the convention is being hijacked "for profit".

NOM's answer to "ban gay marriage" talking points: Chatty Cathy

It's difficult to make it through an entire video clip of NOM's executive director Brian Brown anymore but when I can I get a horrible déjà vu of Chatty Cathy. Somebody PLEASE stop pulling that string!

Mr. Brown's "ban same sex marriage" talking points are so repetitive Chatty Cathy would actually be more entertaining to listen to.

This next DC Channel 8 News interview with Mr. Brown illustrates my point.

Should Heterosexuals be allowed to serve openly in the military?

According to One News Now the American Medical Association (AMA) is ignoring health facts in homosexual advocacy with it's passage of a resolution that opposes "don't ask, don't tell" and declaration that gay marriage bans contribute to health disparities:

Elaine Donnelly, the never served in the military but president of the alleged "Center for Military Readiness" (a.k.a. Center for Military Insaneness) says

the American Medical Association apparently doesn't know the facts about the 1993 law passed by Congress that prohibits homosexuals from serving in the military.

First of all the 1993 law doesn't "prohibit" homosexuals from serving in the military; it "prohibits" them from serving "openly". Secondly, there apparently are some "facts" Ms. Donnelly is unaware of.

Exclusion of GLBT dialogue in schools hurts all children

We've seen in California and now Maine how far religious fundamentalists will go to prevent same-sex couples from obtaining the civil right of marriage. The successful theme continually used which resonates with their supporters is "homosexuals will indoctrinate your children in schools." Buying this argument requires two things
a) A complete lack of knowledge and understanding of who GLBTs are.
b) Belief the GLBT is a community to fear.

"Homosexuality in Your Child's School," a pamphlet distributed by the Family Research Council (FRC), is an example of the type of marketing material being used in the campaign against GLBTs in schools. It's eloquently written with ostensible facts but within the first paragraph its main message is revealed:

Despite decades of activism and media propaganda promoting acceptance and celebration of homosexuality, and numerous political and judicial victories for the pro-homosexual movement, a clear majority of Americans still believe that homosexual behavior is "morally wrong."

Indoctrinating impressionable school children is an easier way of changing public attitudes toward homosexuality than persuading adults.

However, since directly promoting acceptance of homosexuality or of sexual activity by students would be controversial, pro-homosexual activists routinely deny or downplay those aspects of their agenda. Instead, they begin with the school policy proposals that are likely, politically, to win the most agreement. The first issue raised by the advocates of homosexuality is invariably the same--"safety."
