Google Instant censors "lesbian" but "fag" is OK

Google, in their never-ending quest to be the "third half of your brain" launched a new search service called Google Instant. Aptly named, results start to pour in the millisecond you start typing your term, and constantly update as you refine your search term. Just when you though online search couldn't get any better, Google innovates. Google instant is available to US modern web browsers, with plans to expand into other countries as well as mobile devices in the future.

Google wants Instant to be safe for kiddies and the workplace, so they filter certain terms related to pornography, violence, and hate speech from the instant view. That's all well and good (and much appreciated) but herein lies the problem. A few terms related to the LGBTBBQ are also blocked, like "lesbian" and "bisexual." The search will still go through however, if one presses "search" or hits the enter key. As per usual, certain folk are getting up in arms, and Change.org has launched a petition to get those terms whitelisted.

I made a trip to Google Instant to test out several terms in question and received some surprising results. Video after the jump.

Now that there's been a few successful P2P lawsuits hammered forth by the RIAA and other large media companies, the idea has spread to gay porn empire Lucas Entertainment, who recently filed the first of its kind lawsuit against 53 alleged gay [porn] pirates. The ill-gotten booty in question "Kings of New York," a porn about people "fucking their way to the top" in the big city.

Masturbation, Sin, and Showers: the fundamental guilt of growing up gay

I would masturbate in my bed at night... my mother would often knock on my door:

"Nathan, I know what you are doing. Is that right in the eyes of the Lord?"

Ashamed, I'd fight a raging teenage erection...addicted to this feeling... I had to get off. But Mother was right, it was wrong! Why couldn't I be righteous? Why couldn't I follow His Way and be the man He wanted me to be? I couldn't help it though... I had to finish. Now even more cautious, I'd bury myself into the sheets, slowly massaging myself... I promise this will be the last time Lord! As I finish, I roll over, exhausted.

The bathroom was across the hall from my room. The walls were thin and I could hear her every night crying in the shower:

"Oh Lord, I don't know what to do anymore! My children have forsaken Your Word and reject me at every passing! I live in a house where no one respects me and my children deceive me!"

As my mother sobbed, continuing her watery flagellation, I prayed. I prayed for forgiveness. I prayed for peace for my Mother. I prayed to be a better son. I prayed to be a better man in the eyes of the Lord. I prayed for him to remove these despicable thoughts and to replace them with good things. I didn't know I was gay back then. I just knew I was full of sin and deceit.

I masturbated every night. I prayed for forgiveness every night. My Mother cried every night.

Thanks LGBT Blogger Initiative!

Las Vegas is hot. Some of the locals are saying its one of the hottest weeks of the year in, and it sure feels like it. Between the sessions, hunting the elusive "internets" and the quest for real food, a few of us took the opportunity to catch a tan, a risky maneuver for many of us pasty indoor types. An as I was laying in the sun, I was thinking about how lucky I am to have the community of Bilerico, Mike Rogers, and his LGBT Blogger Initiative, all who made it possible for me to attend Netroots Nation with a generous scholarship. I've learned a lot, met some amazing people, and found a few areas I might be able to lend my efforts.

Sudbay, sudbay sudbay sudbay.... sudbay sudbay.. sudbay sudbay bink. Bink bink bink. Michael cra...bink sudbay....

And Joe Sudbay said Bilerico! I thought the idea of a moderator was a to moderate and not to steal the show... Poor Michael Crawford was scuttled till the end, the last five minutes were the meatiest when he FINALLY got a chance to talk about his amazing reactivity to the NOM tour and the tactics they're taking to stop the hate in their tracks... literally. I was pretty bummed, I showed up to hear Michael; he's amazingly successful right now and his time to shine was dimmed by an endless rant from the guys who failed. Shoutout to Julia Rosen, she's pretty awesome too and didn't even get a chance to say much either.

I think this panel shows we're still stuck on bruised egos and still a bit confused about what it means to be proactive, reactive, and when to close a chapter and move on to the next chance to save marriage. Sudbay vetted this post in the end when he closed with "this was very therapeutic for me." there there...

So far, Its been a stimulating overload of new faces, old friends, and some overhashed discussion.

I love it though and I couldn't be more happy to be be here at Netroots Nations with the Bilerico gang. Day one was the LGBT pre-con, a congregation of over 60 of the nations most fervent bloggers. ENDA, DADT, more ENDA, and Dan Choi still looks hungry.

I admit, aside from all the hotel parties (Mike Rogers sure can throw a boozer), huddle sessions, and card swapping, I had to get away. In a quiet corner in one of the 4 Starbucks at the Rio, I sat with Steve Hildebrand. It was a breath of fresh air.

Gay Geeks: Is that a computer in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Ten years ago, the RAZR was the coolest phone you could get. Ten years ago, phones were measured by their shiny and by their size (or lack of). Ten years ago, the mobile internet was laughable and severely under-supported, GPRS and EDGE speeds were considered blazing at 50kbps. Ten years ago, Palm's stock was worth over $300 a share, and the Treo was the emerging smartphone to have.

This week, Palm's stock was devalued after posting a $22M loss last quarter. The Pre, Palm's Hail Mary pass with the Pre fell incomplete, despite the fact that the Pre is actually a really decent phone. With over a million phones unsold sitting in warehouses, and a million or so in the bank to survive, Palm is praying to be bought, where they will be scrapped for IP (Intellectual Property, patents, etc.).

There has been a shift in the mobile hierarchy... Apple, Google, and Microsoft now control everything. Its ok, we'll miss Palm, but everything else is just sweet.

Mid March Apple News: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Oh Apple. Bringer of Shiny Objects, Smooth Interfaces, and Patent Violation Lawsuits... You're like the abusive sugar daddy of gadgets. You constantly shower us with prospect and the fantasy of awesomeness, then remind us why we're your bitch. No wonder Apple Fanboys get picked on so much... I make fun of my abused housewife of a sister all the time for putting up with her man. That was a joke. My sister's the husband beater.

Encountr: The Gay/Bi Guyfinder App for Android. [Gay Geeks]

Android has been shuffling along with its modest App Market library of 30K+. I like to say (and oft prove) that there's a comparable and usable app for most things that the iPhone App Store offers.

Maybe all my friends are just a little bit whorish, or maybe just mobile promiscuity is catching on, but I'm always being asked if they can get Grindr in the Market. Grindr is the premiere geo-locational guy finder app for gay/bi men, simple profiles, simple communication, but apparently effective. And alas, up until recently, Android has been left of out the "guy-finder" app category, until now. Encountr, Android's first native locale-based-boy-radar has just been released. First opinion? It can only get better...

Mobile World Congress 2010 AKA Phone Porn Land [GayGeeks]

Cupertino = Apple porn. Redmond = Microsoft porn (shudder). Barcelona = Phone Porn.

This year, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, was much like CES this year, full of new ideas, new faceplants, and some very sexy mobile devices. While Adobe was selling their relevancy to the mobile world, and HTC was flaunting a sexy unibody Android phone, Microsoft was the breakout kid this time around.

<img style="float:none; border:none;"src="http://www.bilerico.com/2010/02/MWC-thumb-450x86-9995.png" width="450" height="86" alt="MWC.png"/>

I'll give you a teaser: Windows Mobile is Dead, say hello to the iPhone Killer /bait.
