Weekly Email - 2-8-13 - New Orleans

I'll go out on a limb and assume most of you have at some point been down to the Big Easy!
It's a great city with one of the best layouts for walking and enjoying the town.

A perfect city to host a Superbowl with temperatures around 68 all weekend.

The nightlife in New Orleans is world famous and the streets were packed with fans from all over the USA.

Here is a quick look at the fun to be had - have a great weekend!

Weekly Email - 1-25-13 - Lessons from Gum

This week I experienced a little bit of both ends of life.
I started the week off at a funeral and they always make me reflect on life. As sad as they are they are also a reminder that life is short and there's no better time than the present to take action on dreams and goals.

Then a few days later I was in the subway and I noticed a salad on the floor - clearly someone's meal didn't end up where it should have. What struck me was what a little girl said to her mom as she walked by "mommy why is gum black on the ground and not in your mouth?". That really hit me as a great question and helped me also realize how much we change as we grow up. Carpe diem!

The sunset shot was done with the advanced filter to just capture red.

One of the all time great photojournalists - David Burnett spoke at the B&H Photo Event Space this week and I gave him the last two packs of FP100C and FP3000B 4x5 instant films. Can't wait to see what or where he shoots it!

Fujifilm X100s - First Look

Let's take a look at the exciting new X100s and some of the many highlights of the camera.

We all agree it is encouraging to see how several features photographers around the world were asking for have been implemented. The fast response of the AF of the camera, the tweaking of the manual focus performance, the addition of focus peaking, the amazing X-Trans 16mp sensor (new) and many more features listed below.

I'll try to add more to this post as I explore various parts of the camera.

By now many of you have seen the previews and know the top line feature set. Here is a quick review:

Leading the way to the ultimate image quality. APS-C 16M X-Trans CMOS II Sensor & EXR Processor II.

The extreme resolution of FUJIFILM's APS-C 16M X-Trans CMOS II sensor with Optical Low-Pass Filter-less architecture. The clarity of the signal achieved by the optimization of every aspect of its processing circuitry. The enhanced image quality produced by the powerful EXR Processor II. OLPF-less architecture and the original pixel array are the keys to resolution rivaling a full-size sensor. Also the unique integration of phase detection pixels in the array contributes to the dramatic leap in AF speed.

A subtle point which has been improved is the MENU/OK button. It was not changed to the other X series dial - but retained the styling of the X100 with a noticeable tactile improvement.

Here are some quick shots to illustrate how the Menu/OK button is now raised and feels better, and is easier to control. It's amazing how much difference just this extra height makes.

The X100s (top) also had a slight change - one of many - to the EVF-OVF switch

“Digital Split Image”, the world's first manual focus system to exploit the power of phase detection pixels.

Tapping the power of the phase detection pixels integrated in the X-Trans CMOS II sensor, Digital Split Image helps you manually focus your shot with greater precision. While checking the split image displayed in the LCD monitor or EVF, you can manually adjust for pinpoint focus, especially helpful when working with an open aperture or macro shooting.

You can press the thumb toggle switch to zoom in on the scene to help with the split image focus process. Or at any time you can press the AFL button to instantly snap the scene into focus.

In the viewfinder, the distance index bar is displayed together with the depth of field scale and aperture value, providing helpful guides for focusing. For pinpoint precision in manual focus mode, just press the Command Dial and confirm sharpness with a 4x zoom view of the focus point. And at a touch of the AE/AF Lock button, you activate the built-in Focus Aid function for automatic focusing of the subject in the focus frame.

Some of the other new features are the way in which Auto ISO is handled in the menu system. I think folks are going to like the new layout. First the X100 then the X100s:

Note the addition of the menu along the bottom of the improved LCD.

The X100s also has a couple new features like the Shutter Count and 0.5 second image review for faster shooting with image playback.

New EXR CMOS II Sensor with Phase Detection for High Performance

The HS50EXR boasts the latest FUJIFILM EXR 16MP ½” EXR CMOS II sensor, as well as the EXR Processor II, which has faster processing speeds compared to the previous generation EXR processor.

The HS50EXR now includes built-in phase detection to achieve an incredibly fast autofocus speed of just 0.05 seconds in fastest conditions, along with a new Intelligent Hybrid Autofocus system that automatically selects between phase detection autofocus or contrast autofocus in low light to ensure the optimal focus system is used for sharp, vibrant images.

The new EXR CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II make the HS50EXR a truly powerful camera when it comes to capturing moving objects. In addition to the 0.05 seconds autofocus speed*¹, it also achieves a start-up time of 0.5 seconds*³, and interval time between shots of just 0.5^*4 seconds. And by using the Continuous Shooting mode, the HS50EXR can shoot in burst mode of 11fps at the full 16MP resolution (up to 5 frames)^*4. Combined, these technologies mean that you will never miss that crucial shot, no matter how fast your subject is moving.

The HS50EXR also uses a new Focus Peaking feature in manual focus mode to help photographers by highlighting high contrast areas of a subject and provides a guide for focusing in situations where it is difficult to tell whether the subject is correctly focused.

Manual 42x Optical Zoom Lens (24-1000mm*²)

The newly developed 42x FUJINON zoom lens in the HS50EXR offers the precision of a manual zoom and stunning optical performance for beautiful high resolution images. The HS50EXR can shoot Super Macro photography as close as 0.39” all the way through 24mm wide-angle up to 1000mm telephoto^*2, a range that of focal lengths that would require several different lenses on a DSLR camera.

To ensure premium image quality, the HS50EXR lens uses aspherical, ED and cemented elements and achieves blur reduction with Optical Image Stabilization, over the entire aperture range of F2.8 to F5.6. The lens features 17 elements in total, 15 of which have FUJINON’s Super EBC coating on both sides to reduce ghosting and flare in challenging low light situations.

3.0” Variable Angle LCD Screen

The HS50EXR features a 920k dot, highly detailed electronic viewfinder (EVF) that is perfect for helping users frame a subject, even in bright sunlight. And for challenging low or high shots, the HS50EXR has a useful 3.0” variable-angle 920k dot LCD screen that folds out and flips around for easy viewing and shooting.

Full HD Movie 1080p/60fps with continuous phase detection AF and stereo sound

The HS50EXR with built in stereo microphone is now the ideal camera for the budding cinematographer. Thanks to the EXR CMOS II sensor, the HS50EXR is capable of full HD movie recording (1080p) at up to 60 frames per second. Connect an external microphone to the dedicated input and you can get amazing sound to rival the image quality. If you want to be more creative you can record lower resolution movies at up to 480 frames per second*⁵– and capture some amazing slow motion action. The Phase Detection pixel technology and scene recognition modes also work while recording movies to ensure that your video stays sharply focused on the subject.

Artistic shooting effects

The HS50EXR features several Film Simulation Modes. Users can choose from ten different modes which simulate the effects of traditional Fujifilm films, including color reversal film effects (Velvia / PROVIA / ASTIA), as well as create Multiple Exposures by combining two separate subjects into one photo.

The HS50EXR also features Advanced Filter functions including:

Pop Color – emphasizes contrast and color saturation
Toy Camera – create shaded borders as if you were taking a photo on a toy camera
Miniature – adds top and bottom blur for a diorama or miniature effect
Dynamic Tone – create a fantasy effect by dynamically-modulated tonal reproduction
Partial Color – retain one selected original color and change the rest of the photo to black and white
High Key – enhance brightness and reduce contrast to lighten tonal reproduction
Low Key – create uniformly dark tones with few areas of emphasized highlights
Soft Focus – blur the focus of the image edges to create a softer effect

Within the FinePix HS-Series, Fujifilm is also introducing the new FinePix HS35EXR. The HS35EXR features a 16MP ½-inch EXR CMOS Sensor and 30X manual zoom to offer tremendous versatility at a great value.

CES 2013 - Vegas for 5 Days

CES is an experience like none other. There are over a million square feet of display area and an estimated 150,000 people descending on Las Vegas.
Getting to Vegas is of course quite simple and being there is a workout. For us folks from the east coast (and beyond) the first few days are tough since you arrive late and then eat dinner around 8pm - finish around 10pm which is really like 1am, so you start to feel the drag. Then when you get to sleep around 11p you think you are dead tired - but your body wakes you up around 3:30-4am since that's the normal time back home. The cycle repeats, getting later and later and mix in the partying and 15 hours on your feet. Great time had by all! But wait - I'm not here to complain - just share some images from the week. So let's get to it! Vegas baby - a wild town which never disappoints.

The first day I headed over to the Mandalay Bay for a CES press conference and saw Kayce on the escalator.

The big event was the X100s and X20 announcements.

Later that night there was an industry awards dinner event.

Improv Everywhere No Pants Subway Ride Foley Square Entry

Today in NYC the annual No Pants Subway ride took place and it was an amazing sight to see. Check out how many people participated! A plethora of buns running around the subway system and Union Square.

The X-E1 with a 14mm lens was triggered with a remote release so I could just be an observer and not spoil any of the surprise folks would initially have on the train cars.

FUJIFILM announces the new X20 premium digital camera, featuring a new 2/3inch X-Trans CMOS II Sensor and the EXR Processor II that deliver the world’s fastest autofocus speed in its class

Valhalla, N.Y., January 7, 2013 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation announces the new FUJIFILM X20 digital camera that improves on the highly-acclaimed FUJIFILM X10 with an advanced 12MP 2/3” X-Trans CMOS II Sensor and the EXR Processor II to deliver the world’s fastest autofocus speed of up to 0.06 seconds^(*1). The X20 also receives a newly-developed, advanced optical viewfinder with a Digital Trans Panel that displays critical imaging information syncing perfectly with the manual zoom lens.

The X20 achieves improvements in reduced noise, as well as higher resolution thanks to its new X-Trans CMOS II Sensor. By combining the X-Trans filter array and removal of the Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) the X20 delivers:

Advanced X-Trans CMOS II Sensor and EXR Processor II

The FUJIFILM X20 features a newly-developed 12MP 2/3” X-Trans CMOS II sensor with a highly randomized and unique color filter array that eliminates the need for an optical low-pass filter that produces beautiful, high resolution images with edge to edge clarity.

The 2/3” X-Trans CMOS II sensor in the X20 achieves excellent sensitivity and is coupled with the advanced signal processing of the EXR Processor II to reduce noise by more than 30%^(*2) compared to conventional digital cameras in the category.

Fastest Autofocus in Class

The FUJIFILM X20 now features built-in phase detection that achieves the world’s fastest auto focus speed in its class as fast as 0.06 seconds^(*3), a fast start-up time of only 0.5 seconds^(*4), a shutter time lag of 0.01 seconds and a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds. It also features an Intelligent Hybrid Autofocus system that switches between phase and contrast detection, depending on the subject or scene, to achieve the best balance between speed and focus precision.

Using its new Focus Peaking function, the X20 highlights high contrast areas of subjects for precise focusing while using manual focus mode, so that users can achieve perfect focus every time.

High Precision F2.0-2.8 4x Manual Zoom Lens

The FUJIFILM X20 uses the premium FUJINON F2.0-2.8 4x manual zoom lens that is made up of 11 glass elements in 9 groups, including 3 double-sided aspherical elements and 2 extra-low dispersion elements. The lens also uses FUJINON’s proprietary HT-EBC coating to effectively control flare and ghosting from appearing on images for consistent image clarity.

The X20 has a smooth optical 4x manual zoom lens barrel that allows users to determine precise composition quickly. And in Super Macro mode, users can get as close as 0.39” from a subject, for stunning close-up shots.

The X20 also uses a unique image stabilization mechanism that shifts 5 lens elements to compensate for camera shake by up to 4 stops, while also effectively preventing motion blur and reducing vignetting and loss of image resolution that usually occurs during camera shake.

The FUJIFILM X20 uses a 7 diaphragm blade system that enables users to create a beautiful soft ‘bokeh’ effect to make subjects stand out against a soft background.

Advanced Digital Trans Panel Optical Viewfinder

The FUJIFILM X20 has a bright optical viewfinder that features a newly-developed Digital Trans Panel that clearly displays shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focusing area and other shooting information. The X20’s advanced viewfinder also synchronizes with the 4x manual zoom lens so that users can accurately compose shots using the viewfinder even when the focal length is constantly changing. The Digital Trans Panel automatically switches the color of information in the shooting frame according to the scene and shooting conditions. Normally displayed in black, shooting information is automatically displayed by green LEDs for enhanced visibility in especially dark scenes.

Film Simulation Modes and Artistic Filters

To give users even more creative possibilities, the X20 also features Fujifilm’s proprietary Film Simulation Mode which includes ten film simulation options that replicate the results achieved by Fujifilm color reversal films (Velvia / PROVIA / ASTIA) and professional color negative films (PRO Neg. Std / PRO Neg. Hi), along with three B/W filter effects (Ye filter, R filter and G filter).

The X20 also has Advanced Filter functions for additional artistic functionality, including Pop Color, Toy Camera, Miniature, Dynamic Tone, Partial Color, Soft Focus, High Key and Low Key.

Users can also choose a separate Multiple Exposure function that combines two separate subjects into one photo, perfect for adding people into photos that they had missed.

A new Movie Scene Recognition feature automatically recognizes six types of scenes and optimizes settings for sharp results in a variety of shooting conditions. Additionally, the X20’s Intelligent Hybrid AF feature operates during the X20’s full HD 1080p video up to 60fps in a high-bit rate for smooth movie capture with reduced noise and sharp clarity.

Sharp LCD Screen and “Q” Menu System

Composing and viewing images on the FUJIFILM X20’s LCD screen is easy and clear thanks to its high-contrast, 460k dot, 2.8” premium screen that has a wide viewing-angle and an enhanced GUI menu system.

The menu system in the X20 receives Fujifilm’s latest Q “Quick” button feature that allows users to quickly call up a wide-range of frequently-used settings, and the programmable Fn (Function) button allows users to assign commonly-used functions at the touch of a button.

The X20 also features an Advanced SR Auto mode, which detects not only the main subject but also whether it is moving or stationary to automatically optimize the focus, exposure, ISO and other settings.

Design and Build Quality

I decided to give the camera a whirl to test the 6fps - needless to say it works and the buffer can handle dozens and dozens of images fired in rapid succession.

Extra tension was given to the exposure compensation dial so it will not turn accidentally.

The X100S’s new X-Trans CMOS II Sensor is the successor to the original X-Trans CMOS sensor that features a unique, highly randomized color filter arrangement that removes the need for an optical low-pass filter, allowing it to maximize the amount of light it receives directly to capture much finer image details. The X100S effectively reduces noise by almost a full stop, even in low light shooting, to produce crisp images with minimal grain.

Using its newly-developed X-Trans CMOS II Sensor with built-in phase detection, the FUJIFILM X100S is capable of autofocus speeds as fast as 0.08 seconds⁽¹⁾, and together with the new EXR Processor II, delivers a start-up time of nearly 0.5 seconds^(*4) and a shutter lag time of just 0.01 seconds with a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds. The X100S is capable of a burst shooting rate of up to 6 frames per second at the full resolution of 16.3 megapixels.

The X100S also features an Intelligent Hybrid Autofocus system that switches between phase and contrast detection, depending on the subject or scene, to achieve the best balance between speed and focus precision.

And for the first time ever, the X100S now features a revolutionary Digital Split Image function that uses the X-Trans CMOS II Sensor’s built-in phase detection pixels to display dual images that can be manually focused by the user; and a new Focus Peaking function that highlights high contrast areas of subjects for precise focusing, so that users can achieve perfect focus every time.

High Performance Bright FUJINON 23mm F2 Fixed Lens

The X100S features a FUJINON 23mm F2 fixed lens that consists of 8 elements in 6 groups, and includes a high-performance double-sided aspherical element and highly-refractive converging glass elements that delivers a high level of detailed performance with minimal aberration, excellent sharpness and beautiful color reproduction. The FUJINON lens also adds a proprietary HT-EBC coating to effectively control image flare and ghosting.

Another strength of the FUJINON 23mm F2 fixed lens is the soft, round-shaped bokeh that is achieved from the 9 blade lens diaphragm that also includes a built-in 3-stop ND filter. Moreover, the FUJINON lens allows users to get as close as 3.94” from a subject in macro mode for stunning close-up shots.

Vivid Hybrid Viewfinder

Fujifilm introduced the world’s first Hybrid Viewfinder with the original FUJIFILM X100, and improves upon that with the all new X100S’s high-definition Hybrid Viewfinder that allows users to switch between two viewfinder options: optical or electronic.

The optical viewfinder (OVF) shows subjects in the same natural bright clarity as seen with naked eye, while the electronic viewfinder (EVF) shows useful composition information including focus check, exposure, white balance and depth of field. This new viewfinder offers an easy-to-see magnification of 0.5 at a 23mm focal length and a horizontal apparent field of view of 26 degrees, while the all-glass construction uses high-refractive index glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortion.

The electronic viewfinder uses a 100% coverage, extra high resolution, 2.36 million dot high definition LCD panel. It shows depth-of-field during macro shooting, as well as white balance settings, allowing users to accurately compose their shot while continuously looking through the viewfinder.

Design and Build Quality

Following the tradition of the FUJIFILM X100, the all-new FUJIFILM X100S continues to prove that advanced digital imaging technology can come in a boldly-designed, premium-built body.

The X100S’s top and base parts are made of magnesium alloy to achieve a lightweight and resilient build, while the dials and rings have been milled from solid metal, with attention paid to the finer details such as finger grips for enhanced operability. Weekly Email - 12-28-12 - Annual Physical

Above: Christmas day evening from Jersey City to NYC.

As we all know from our health care providers an annual physical is a good idea! I hope you got yours and stay active! January is the busiest time for new gym memberships. I'm going to try to up the routine a bit and not get stuck in the lazy rut.

I finally went in for my check up last week. So of course I couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph the battery of tests they do on me.

So there is a squeamish alert here. If you do not like blood or needles do not look at the photos below. It's not gory - just me in process.

On a brighter note there was an interesting guy who buries himself in pigeons and just loves it. I captured a bunch of shots of him and his new pets.

Fujifilm XF14mm 2.8 Lens Hits the Street

I am loving the new 14mm lens!! This is a winner and with it's smooth focusing in both manual and auto-focus modes it has a great feel.
I am going to try and pump a bunch of images out this weekend and show off the performance of the lens. When it ships early in 2013 it will have a USA retail of $899.95.

Note the lens focus ring - it snaps back to perform manual focus and reveal the distance scale.

I had to capture a few shots with the X-Pro1 and 18-55 while also shooting with the X-E1 and 14mm.

All the images below are with the XF14mm lens.

I love using my flashlight for a quick bit of spot light.

The writing on the arc across the top is very sharp when viewed at 100%.

The other day I walked into the shoe repair place and took a quick behind the scenes look at their cramped work area with the X-E1 and XF14mm at ISO 800.

I also took a quick pit stop at a beach area on Long Island.
Having the effective full frame focal length of 21mm really makes shooting a joy for those of us who love wide angle views. The lens is sharp and has very little distortion as you will probably notice.

This week after some work out on Long Island I thought I would head towards the Brooklyn Bridge for a shot of the city skyline.
I knew the shot I wanted and as I drove through rain on the LIE towards the city I saw the sun begin to peek through the clouds and make some nice formations.
Of course traffic wasn't cooperating and as I saw it all going away I shot the first image while driving on the BQE out the sunroof at 4:23pm. I knew sunset was at 4:30p and then I would have about 20 mins before the twilight glow faded.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it when I wanted so I did my best at 5:18pm with a long skyline exposure of five seconds with multiple images combined as a panoramic image.

This week while walking around downtown Manhattan I saw so many interesting scenes. One street caught my eye with its canopy of steel turning it into a cave.

I shot a couple shots in auto white balance and felt like I wasn't quite getting the right look so I changed up the white balance and tried to figure out what kind of light the bulbs were. Here are a couple samples of those scenes.

Fujifilm X-E1 Leather Half Case & XF14mm Lens

Now that the X-E1 is getting out into the market I am excited to get a hold of some of the accessories which improve the look and feel of the camera. The leather half case for the X-E1 is beautiful. I'm a big fan of the look and style. The flip hatch for the battery and SD card is a great perk. The case set also comes with a black protective wrap as seen below. In stores in about two weeks.

I think you'll dig it as well.

Another great accessory is the remote RR-80. This basic remote works like a cable release in the USB port if you prefer to use this instead of a traditional threaded cable with the X-E1.

The new XF14mm lens will be a winner when it hits the market next year. I am so excited to use this lens!! I don't have exact arrival times but hope to see it land in the USA in late January. Having seen an early pre-production unit it is easy to see how this will be a wonderful lens. There is very little distortion evident for a wide angle. I didn't see much of any bending for an effective 21mm lens. Very clean lines although this is a very early unit and by no means final production.
The 14mm on the OVF is worked out by showing 4 yellow arrows in the outer corners of the digital overlay. The image area extends to the outer edge of the full optical frame. So you are not seeing the actual framed outline - but the image area is the full optical view - APPROXIMATELY. It's a great lens and when more people handle it I am sure it will prove to be a hot one.

As for the half case for the X100 comment - I don't think it's out of the question to see a half case for the X100 one day. Clearly we continue to bring out new accessories for the X-Series cameras.
The handling and construction feels great. The lens has a nice look and focus is fast and silent like the XF18-55. The neat but not quite conventional feature is the snap back focus ring which engages the manual focus when desired. I remember this on a Tamron lens I had about 10 years ago if my memory serves me correctly. The lens will still of course work with the AF-L button even when MF is engaged, like other lenses in our X-series. These images are quick snapshots and are by no means here for any sort of judgement beyond focal length angle of view on the X-E1 or X-Pro1.

This week I broke out the fish-eye lens for a couple fun super wide images.

I thought it was interesting to see how differently your eyes wander around each image.

The park image is busy and when I look at it I feel a bit of an undulating sensation, and the other is a bit more simple yet still captivating.

This week I spent an hour or so in an MRI machine and it was quite an experience to have your full brain mapped out.
Through a series of over 20,000 images they took a look at how my brain responded to various written and visual tests.
I did this for a research project and thankfully not to look for bad things.

Of course I told them if they are capturing me, then I want to capture me too. So attached are a couple quick pics as well as the link to a short video of how the mapping crosses from top to bottom.

Fujifilm XF-1 Advanced Mode Samples

The recently released Fujifilm XF-1 has many new features packed into its tiny frame. They are a nice option to use to add creative effects to your photographic experience. Coupled with its 2/3" sensor it shares with the X10 and X-S1, the XF1 is an attractive and capable camera.

Fujifilm X-Pro1 Price Move

The Fujifilm X-PRO1 is making a move!
To spur on holiday sales Fujifilm (USA) is reducing the price of the X-Pro1 from Nov 25th to Feb 2, 2013.
The price will move from $1699.95 for the body to $1399.95.
There is also a combo savings when the camera is bought with the XF18mm or XF35mm lens. The price for this set is $1699.95. Both are a $300 savings off the current pricing.

The Fujifilm X-E1 body and kits have now shipped in the USA and dealers will see their stock levels increasing over the next week or two. I am sure the reviews will be coming in as the camera gets into more hands. From the early reports I've seen the 16MP XTrans sensor is performing excellently and the camera is a great addition to the X-Series. Shipments of the XF18-55 lens will also be ramping up shortly. The status of the XF14mm lens is still in a holding pattern and I'd like to be cautious on its arrival date and just say it should be a few weeks or more. I am sure it will be on many photographers holiday list.

Justin Bieber at the Barclays Center

Now I know what you are thinking - why was he shooting a Justin Bieber concert? Well I tell ya - I look at any shooting opportunity as a way to learn and experiment with my equipment. For this concert I was using the Fujifilm X-Pro1 + 35mm 1.4 and the Canon 5DIII mostly with the 70-200 2.8.

Clearly the biggest challenge was freezing the motion while not going crazy with a super high ISO and shooting tons of frames - since I just didn't feel like having a massive edit process. So I shot conservatively around ISO 1250 for most of the night and I really should have gone to ISO 2000 and used a faster shutter speed in many situations. But here's what I got and I am sure any 13 year old would love them!

I always love to see how many cell phones are up at concerts. I think at one point every person used theirs. Here's a quick shot showing them.

One lucky fan was ecstatic to be up on stage.

Their laser show was impressive.

This is one of the younger Kardashian sisters. That's about all I know.

NEW Firmware Updates for Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-E1

We have released an important firmware update for the X-Pro1 and the X-E1.

There are a myriad of tweaks in these releases but one of the main ones which will concern you is that when an X-Pro1 user buys the XF18-55 lens they will need to update their firmware so the lens works properly on the X-Pro1. Lots more details below!

X-Pro1 - The firmware update Ver.2.01 from Ver. 2.00 incorporates the following issue

1.Adding the compatibility with "XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R".
- *You will get the full performance with the new zoom lens "XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R".
- *Size of the bright frame displayed on OVF can be magnified in relation to zooming motion of XF18-55mm lens.
2.The phenomena below will be fixed.
- (1)When using the focus checking function with “3-time” magnification in manual focus mode, you could find a few dots (black or color) only in live view image on EVF/LCD.
  (Please be sure even with the firmware version 2.00, these unwanted dots are not recorded in the image data.)
- (2)The auto focus accuracy with XF60mm Lens could not be enough.
- (3)When using the M- Mount Adapter, under exposure could occur.

<Notice>
1.To enable those features, please confirm the firmware version of your Fujinon XF lenses (XF18mmF2 R / XF35mmF1.4 R / XF60mmF2.4 R Macro) is Ver 2.01.
2.The firmware version of XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS is shown as Ver 1.00, and no firmware update is required.（as of Nov/2012）

1. Improvement of Auto Focus Performance
- (1)Auto focusing speed has become much faster under a various shooting condition such as dark scenes, bright scenes and so on.
- (2)The shortest focusing distance without switching to macro mode has become shorter.
2.Improvement of Manual Focus Performance
- (1)The speed of images coming into focus when turning the focus ring has become faster.
- (2)When adjusting the focus with the EVF or the LCD, displaying live view with the minimum depth of field in full aperture has made it easier to focus on subjects.
- (3)In addition to the focus checking with the 10-time magnification function, the checking with "3-time" magnification function has been added.
3. Improvement of Writing and Processing Speed
- (1)Writing speed to a memory card has become faster with the maximum speed doubled.
  <Note> The speed may vary depending on card type and sizes of images.
- (2)The waiting time of viewing image after shooting has become shorter.
- (3)An image will be displayed approx. one second after pressing the playback button.
4.Other improvements
- (1)The ISO setting of "Auto (6400)" has been added.
- (2)When EVF or OVF is used, the indicator lamp will turn off because the lamp comes to just in front of your right eye if you see the finder with your left eye.
- (3)When shooting in low light situation, a recorded image will look like more natural atmosphere you saw.

Fujifilm X-E1 Part II Around Town Snapshots

Time to post some of the latest images from the past month or so. Trying to illustrate many types of scenes so you can get an idea of how the camera performs in many situations. Of course I do have a slight over confidence in the camera since it shares the same X-Trans sensor the X-Pro1 has which has already proven itself in the market. The X-E1 bodies only have shipped. The kits will follow soon and then the 14mm in about three weeks - guessing around December 1 arrival - a guess!

So off we go to let the images speak for themselves! I assume the exif data is there - but I hear at various times it's stripped. Not my intention to avoid those details.

Hurricane Sandy Hits NYC Area

When the power goes out you experience a new kind of darkness. Cell service is down and spotty, water pressure is lower or gone, subways and tunnels are filling with water, traffic lights are out and food is running low.

It's been a few days and I had to drive 85 miles before I found an open gas station on the Merritt Parkway (others were closed due to no power or sold out of gas or had lines of over 50 cars). If you've watched the news gas is out in NYC and limited in NJ. I could go on and on about the massive destruction I saw as I traveled around lower NYC but this is mostly a photo blog so I'm going to get to posting some photos.

Here is an expanding series on NYC and Staten Island. The forgotten Island just 5,000 feet from Manhattan really got slammed and the wreckage is hard to describe.

This week has been one of those hard to describe life experiences. Unless you've lived a disaster before then it's kind of hard to feel the smells and pain in words alone. Life in most of Manhattan below 33rd street is dark and without power since Monday at 8:25pm. When the power goes out you experience a new kind of darkness. Cell service is down and spotty, water pressure is lower or gone, subways and tunnels are filling with water, traffic lights are out and food is running low.

The first set is to show you the absolute stark difference between uptown and downtown. Friends uptown don't see or feel the crisis the same way. They have power and streams of people are making the trek to power above 33rd.
