Do invites work? Is the viral loop happening in your Ning network?

If you read about viral expansion loops in this interesting article - one of the business concepts behind Ning - you wonder if it really happens in your network.

Andrew Chen, a blogger and former advertising executive who worked with MySpace, Hi5, and other social sites says viral loops are the "most advanced direct-marketing strategy being developed in the world right now."

... a "viral expansion loop," (is) a concept little known outside of Silicon Valley .... It's a type of engineering alchemy that, done right, almost guarantees a self-replicating, borglike growth: One user becomes two, then four, eight, to a million and beyond.

So my question is: Does the invite function work for you?
Do you get a lot of members via invites or do most members find your network differently. My assumption is that with more seasoned internet users the current invite function does NOT really work well. Many see it as spam and will not sign up. I found it way more effective if you personally tell somebody about your network in a mail and invite him or her to join - one on one. But THAT is of course no viral loop - that is traditional marketing.

Don't get me wrong - I love the power of Ning and I'm all in favor of viral loops and advanced marketing techniques. I just wonder what other NCs experience regarding the efficiency of invites.

Thats an interesting chart if you are into HD video. See the litte SD square in the lower right corner? Thats current standard video resolution called "SD". Then come the current HD formats that can make it to big screen TVs (720P and 1080P). But there are video cams that can do more. The absolute hight end devices are called RED and can shoot in 3k, 4k and 5k resolution. That's not really relevant for daily use but gives you an idea of what's possible.

Try this software: Mouseposé
It's great because you can highlight the area where the mouse is and even more important - you can visualize mouseclicks! Your screencasts will never have looked better. To record screencasts I use SnapzPro (Mac only). You can capture videos with many options but you have to cope with a rather complicated userinterface. Well - but once you have set it up and understood the basics it's real easy.

Tip: On really big monitors it's sometimes difficult to see where the mouse pointer is. Turn Mouseposé on during your normal work with a very large spotlight blur and you will have a dramatic effect that really work, is fun to use and will make everybody look really amazed when they see it the first time. Great for presentations and key notes too!

Thats a pretty advanced trick because you cannot access the Mac OS X Finder application through the finder itself. You have to use the Go command and then drag the application into the spaces window. But with that - you have total control where Finder should appear in Spaces. I personally have one space dedicated to a open Finder browser window but yet - want to open Finder in every space also. Give it a try. Pretty powerful.

Clicking the Mouse Scroll-button = Spaces
ctrl+right mouse button = expose (show program windows)

Typing the Space key in Finder opens Quicklook in Mac OS Leopard. Thats handy but how do you select files that have leading spaces then? Some users like to do that to keep certain files on top of name sorted file list. It's still there - just type Option + Space.

I don't know when was the last time that you bought a music CD. I did about 5 years ago and could not play it on my Mac nor rip it on iTunes because it was copyrighted. The music industry punished me for officially buying a CD in a store - that was surely the last time I did that.

We all consume music totally different now. Many use iPods and get their music either "legally" via the iTunes music store or copy friends harddrives or use torrents not only for music but also for films.

Social networks like fitOlderMen and Datedick give another option. You just listen to music that other member had uploaded. And you even can download the files.

I just read something interesting at Gizmodo which gives a total new option.

Some might know last.fm already. They just released a new service that lets you listen to music officially from all mayor lables for free - exactly 3 times!

What you can do now is "record" that music stream and use it on your iPod or wherever you want indefinitely.

How you do this? Just use software like AudioHiJack Pro on the Mac or Total Recorder on Windows. These programs record everything you hear on your computer and create a un-DRMd sound file.

The only drawback: you have to manually start and stop the recording - like in the old days with cassette recorders. And you have to edit the MP3 info. And you have to accept (or edit afterwards) lead-in or lead-out gaps. But that's not really difficult to do and worth the effort. Isn't this cool?
