STYLE GUIDE: Incorporating Fall’s Best Looks When it’s Still 85 Degrees Out

Just because you live somewhere with year-round sunshine and above-average temps, doesn’t mean you should be excluded from the fashion bounty that cooler weather brings! We’ve compiled a few tips to help you infuse some Autumn into your wardrobe, even when your year-round playlist sounds a lot like “Forever Summer”!

1. Shackets.

The “shacket” (a hybrid between a shirt and a jacket) is a girl’s best friend. Shackets not only deliver in transitional weather, but when we absolutely need to get our outerwear fix and the weather just won’t allow it! Slightly heavier than a shirt, but much lighter than a jacket, the handy shacket won’t weight you down, even if your own personal Winter Wonderland is all in your head.

2. Booties/ Shooties.

Winter undeniably means boot season, but boots are great at keeping in the heat! If it’s simply just not practical to don your boots yet, booties and shooties (a cute play on words between “booty” and “shoe”) will give you that cool weather feel, without feeling all the heat! Try booties with peep toes and cutouts, and shooties with a platform wedge or even a kitten heel for your day-to-night transition.

3. Layering.

At the end of the day, if you live somewhere like we do (the Sunshine State), learning how to effectively layer your pieces is the smartest (and chicest) way to attain a wintery wardrobe vibe without dying in the heat. Stock up on cute camis that you can throw an open blouse over and top with a cardi you tie at the waist. Shackets look great over tank dresses, and cardigans are preferable to pullovers because you can unbutton as needed.

We who live in the Sunshine State certainly don’t want to seem ungrateful for all of the beautiful warm weather we are blessed to enjoy year-round. Where many people across the world might be seeing first signs of snow, we are basking under cerulean blue skies and blessing that perfectly mingled feeling of sea breezes and golden rays. As with any blessing, however, there is oftentimes a flip side to the coin. When “Autumn” here means dead palm fronds falling precariously from the sky, it can start to feel like one is missing out on what’s almost a biological right: The changing of the seasons. This is why we want to make the case for changing up your style, season to season, even if the weather stubbornly stays put.

Psychologists and researchers have proven that when we experience a marked change from Summer to Autumn, Winter to Spring, it revitalizes and renews our own perception of our place in the world. Our own transitions make more sense. The changing seasons can even give us a feeling of permission to molt the old and sprout the new. And if your local climate simply doesn’t look like this, then changing your wardrobe to suit the planetary mood can be almost just as good.
Because the truth is, that first shift in the winds when children pile back into school buses and the snow birds begin their descent south from the wild north, signals a change in our own psyches.

graphic tee will be your secret Kung Fu fighting move whenever you want to infuse a lot of personality into an otherwise casual look.

Below, find our three tips for incorporating a graphic tee into your ensemble, whenever you’re feeling less basic and more come on baby, light my fire…

1. Less is More

The most straightforward and arguably most chic approach to styling a graphic tee is simple: great fitting jeans, a menswear-inspired blazer, pointy-toed heels or fashion sneakers, then call it a day.

If you want to make an outfit that makes clashing look chic (an approach we highly recommend), look to the decade of the band you’re repping, or the colors that are present in the graphic’s design.

LET’S TALK: The Age of Casual—Let your t-shirt be a gateway.

Cameron Silver, celebrity stylist and famed owner of Beverly Hills vintage boutique, Decades (and our good pal) says that fashion is a wonderful barometer for culture.
Looking back over the course fashion has taken these last three years reveals the twists and turns society has undergone since the pandemic. Where athleisure wear had already become an American staple, staying inside more frequently and for longer intervals changed the athleisure game, for the better.

The same can be said for t-shirts. Once reserved for uber-casual moments only, t-shirts are seeing a renaissance born from the beauty of “form following function.” Women now have much higher expectations that their clothes will not only be flattering, they’re also exceedingly comfortable. Our love and need for superior athleisure wear has had a trickle-down effect into many other categories of fashion, and t-shirts are suddenly experiencing a golden age as a result.
Frequently made with more luxurious cottons and sophisticated weaving techniques, incorporating subtle and playful metallic details, stitching and ruffles, your beloved tee has become anything but basic.

Standing in front of the mirror, we often ask ourselves, “What does this outfit communicate?” The humble t-shirt, we’ve found, has a broader lexicon than ever before. At its most classic, it gives a retro, sporty vibe. But like any basic piece of apparel, how you style it can make or break a look. Since we’re in the business of making looks, here are a few tried and tested tips for rocking that t-shirt with confidence.

1. Pay attention to fit.
We’re in the golden age of t-shirts now, with expert brands like Goldie (proudly featured in our shop on 1st Street in Sarasota) who specialize in making tees that truly suit a woman’s body. LET'S TALK: Are Bold Prints Just for "Younger Women"?

Absolutely Not. Here's Why.

Here at T.Georgiano’s, we have the pleasure and the privilege of styling women whose birthdays range across the decades. All too often, we’ll hear an older woman say,

“Oh, I can’t wear that! I’m too old!”

To which we respectfully yet adamantly reply, “Never!”

We aren’t sure whomever first (erroneously) stated that older women should stay away from prints that are loud or daring, but consider this your crash course in not only incorporating daring prints into your wardrobe

—we’ll show you how to rock them!

First things first: Know your figure.

A bold and daring print will draw the eye, instantly. Wherever you want to draw some attention, a print will do the job. Are you significantly more busty on top than you have hips down below?

A busy or boisterous print will accentuate an area you might desire to minimize. An elegant black blouse and a fun printed slack will draw the eye downwards. If you’re curvier down below and more petite up top, a neutral or dark-toned pencil skirt or tailored pant can expertly offset a playful printed t-shirt, blouse, or sweater.

Our second hack: Pair print with color.

Though it may seem logical or conventional to pair a bright and busy print with a black counterpart, we want to make the case for pairing a print with an accent color.

Wearing color (the right color for your palette) has this magical way of inviting the inner child out to play. Color is uplifting and instantly “youthening.”

Choose a print that incorporates one of your favorite colors, and then pair with that color in either a blouse or your bottom of choice.

Finally, buck convention and just have fun.

One of our favorite fashion muses is not some young, wispy thing splashed across fashion editorials or traipsing down runways.

She’s 102 year-old Iris Apfel, our all-inspiring Queen of Clash.

In recent interviews, Ms. Apfel still speaks with a sense of play and humor in her choice of words, an attitude which comes across in volumes through her style, and is no doubt one of the greatest secrets to remaining young at heart, even after 100. She’s been quoted as saying,

“When the fun goes out of getting dressed, you might as well be dead,” and we do not disagree.

Let your style be your canvas, and prints, your limitless palette of artistic wonder. Because life really is too short not to have a little fun every now and then.

STYLE GUIDE: Embrace the Clash!

How-to expertly clash prints the next time you want to make a statement

If curating an outfit could have beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of expertise, putting together various prints to make a “productive clash” might be considered the equivalent to defending a Ph.D in style. But hear us out! Clashing can be cool, and it’s much easier to accomplish than you might realize. You only need to know “the rules”.

Rule 1: Choose a lead pattern.
Like people, some patterns are dominant, while others might be more submissive. Though it might be subtle to detect, a dominant pattern will make you go wow and hit you right in the gut, or even the heart. Let that pattern shine, while choosing a less-dominant pattern (think gentle polka dots, stripes, geometric motifs, or soft florals) to play supporting actor to the bolder pattern’s leading role.

Rule 2: Choose an accent color.
This rule is like the gateway to becoming a clashing master. Start with a show-stopping pattern that has at least 3 colors in its design. You can easily choose a color from that pattern to highlight with a monochrome pattern boasting that same hue. Or maybe your original pattern possesses a single dominant color. In cases like this, consult the color wheel. Colors on opposite sides do an excellent job of highlighting the beauty in one another. So if you have a mostly blue skirt, oranges and yellows will make it burst. Mostly red? Purples and greens will
make it glow. And if your original pattern of choice is like an overturned rainbow, spilling out its colors every which way, then you have free rein to choose whatever accent color you please!

Rule 3: Forget the rules.
The bottom line is that fashion is meant to be fun and personal. Iris Apfel (who just turned 102!) says that if it makes her happy, she wears it. Apfel is the veritable Queen of Clash, who transforms the boldest and least conventional outfits into statements of effortless chic, simply because what she chooses brings her joy and intensifies her uniqueness. And when we’re joyful and feeling authentic, we wear our style choices, and not the other way around.

So forget about the rules and just have fun!

‘I’m Being Pushed to Another Level’: The View From a Small Business Owner

Tatyana Sharoubim-Stewart was 18 years old and a junior at Rollins College in Winter Park when she inherited her late father’s Raleigh, North Carolina-based shoe salon and all its upscale inventory.

“It was 2005 and e-commerce was starting to happen, so I moved to Sarasota and put all the merchandise online,” she says. “There weren’t templates for websites then, so we had to custom-code our own.”

At the same time, Sharoubim-Stewart opened a small showroom by appointment on Fourth Street and Cocoanut Avenue in the not-yet-gentrified Rosemary District and named it T. Georgiano’s. She grew a following by throwing hostess parties, complete with beverages and snacks.

“This was a summer project and I was planning to go back to school,” she says. “Fifteen years later here we are.”

Spurred on by a growing customer base, in November 2007 she opened T. Georgiano’s in the new strip of upscale shops on First Street near Whole Foods. “My store was so high-end—exotic handbags and $800 shoes—it was like a shoe museum,” she says.

And then, in 2008, the economy crashed. Single and the shop’s only employee (she since has married and has two children, ages 5 and 2), Sharoubim-Stewart had to rebrand T. Georgiano’s with inventory at more wide-ranging price points, including leisurewear. “I did what I could,” she says. “I had to create a new identity for the store. I had to evolve, and I had to reinvest.”

Quitting wasn’t an option. “I hung on by the thinnest thread,” she says. “I love it and believe in it so much, I had to continue.”

What has been hardest as she’s temporarily closed her doors on First Street due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sharoubim-Stewart says, is not being able to be with people in person. “Our customers are our friends, we hug our customers, we cry, we laugh,” she says. Keeping that connection while transferring to exclusively online shopping is a challenge, but because she utilized social media long before it became commonplace, that has served her well.

She is posting live fashion shows on her Facebook page with special appearances by her children and her dog and has started a Pushup for Resilience challenge in which she posts videos of herself doing 20 pushups a day. When we talked last week, it was Day 35. She also includes short inspirational blog posts in her weekly e-newsletter, which has 2,000 subscribers, along with links to clothing and accessories for purchase in a “life beyond sweatpants” section. And she posts product photos of herself and her family regularly for the 10,000 people who follow her on Instagram.

“I’m trying to motivate and inspire people,” she says. “They may be in isolation, not OK with being at home alone. I’m telling them, you’re allowed to have a bad day, you’re not alone. I’m using everything I have to offer as a human in my customer experience. They’re not just shopping for a product, they’re gaining a connection.”

Sharoubim-Stewart does home deliveries around downtown Sarasota and on Siesta Key, and hopes to offer private shopping appointments in May, in store or at home, “whatever people are comfortable with,” she says.

“I feel I’m being pushed to another level,” she says. “In the long run it will be awesome.”

And she offers one last thought: “Support local businesses,” she says. “We really need them.”

T. Georgiano’s Boutique embraced the season of giving by donating 300 pairs of designer shoes to the Newtown nonprofit Second Chance Last Opportunity on Dec. 12.

Tatyana Sharoubim-Stewart, owner of T. Georgiano’s, said she wanted to give back to the members of the Sarasota community who need it the most. The shoes will be handed out at to pre-registered women at Second Chance Last Opportunity’s Hope for the Holiday program on Dec. 21.

Sharoubim-Stewart said she hopes that the shoes will help the women feel confident.

April Glasco, founder of Second Chance, said the donation will give the women “know that there’s a a path they can walk into a better life.”

Curbside Pickup Service During COVID-19

Boutiques in downtown Sarasota are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak—and finding creative methods to serve clientele. T. Georgiano’s, on First Street, is offering curbside pickup for customers who have ordered clothing online. The boutique’s fully operational online store has all the same styles and brands that the physical location offers. All customers have to do is call the store and select a pick-up option. Employees will then meet them curbside, just like a to-go restaurant service, or run orders across the street to valet parking. The store is also offering virtual styling sessions over video chat, if desired.

Sharoubim is also still offering in-person shopping—cautiously. “Our physical location is still open, and we are taking precautions and cleaning frequently,” she says.

Sharoubim admits that the store has seen a dip in customers during what is usually the peak season, and encourages people to think about buying gift cards for use later, too. “Small businesses need people’s support right now,” she says.

T. Georgiano’s first opened with a strict vision dedicated to an upscale shoe salon, but as the business grew, owner Tatyana Sharoubim realized that the once-quaint store had morphed into a full-blown lifestyle boutique. SRQ sat down with Sharoubim to talk success, upcoming trends and the fashion of the future.

SRQ: How do you pick the shoes you carry in T. Georgiano’s? Sharoubim: Each season I visit with different designers that I’ve been working with for over 10 years, then I select and look at the forecast for what’s trending based on the collections and heel heights. I also get to work closely with a few of the designers to pick from a variety of leathers and prints so I can customize them for the store. A lot of times, I do exclusives that you can’t find anywhere else and I try to work on providing customers with the most up-to-date fashion styles that are good quality but at a competitive price point.

Who is your customer? Our demographic is the effortless and ageless woman who is playful, confident and always on the go. It doesn’t matter what age she is—we have women that are 20 and women that are 90.

What’s the hot shoe trend this season? Platforms are back big time. Everyone loves them and they are really comfortable and practical—it is a really nice, convenient style to come back to. Another trend would be details on heels whether they are shaped like a comma, or have any sort of design that takes a basic and makes them a little bit funkier. Also peep-toed booties are huge.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to start a successful boutique? The best piece of advice I can give someone is travel, do your research, go to stores that you think you want to almost replicate, take advice from your friends but don’t write it in stone. Once you take that big step of opening up your own business the clientele you build is organic.

How do you balance risk of owning a small business? I absolutely head-over-heels love what I do—you have to in order to endure the worst. You risk it all every year when you unveil collections and you set a budget and spend it. That’s the scary part because you don’t know how it’s going to be received.

How do you see fashion evolving in Sarasota? For the most part, ladies here are very active and involved in the community philanthropically, so they have a lot of events to go to. I feel like people want to buy basics that fit, look great, are breathable, easy to accessorize and layerable to a point where if they don’t have time to change, these transitional pieces can take them from day to evening.
