FOUR PEOPLE SHOT IN OBERLIN – SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

Oberlin Police say that a total of four people were shot Thursday night in an apartment building parking lot on West College Street. All four victims are expected to make a full recovery according to Police.

Witnesses say some of the victims were shot in the leg while another was shot in the head. All appeared to be minor injuries.

Police also say the suspect in the shooting has been taken into custody.

Oberlin Police Investigators continue to sweep the scene and interview witnesses.

CAR CRASHES INTO CHURCH – DRIVER AND 5 CHILDREN INJURED

Sheffield Township – A total of six people were taken to the hospital Saturday night after a crash on South Broadway and Cooper Foster Park Road.

State Troopers say 26 year old Jose A Guerra of Lorain was traveling south on Broadway when he went left of center in a black Ford Fusion. The car went off the road striking a mailbox and continued south through yards striking a couple of sign posts and another mailbox before entering the parking lot of Broadway Assembly Church. Debris was strewn across the church lot leading to where the car struck the northwest corner of the building. That portion of the building is the “children’s room” and Church workers say three children had just left that room moments before the crash.

Sheffield Township Firefighters arrived to find Guerra and 5 children injured. A mutual aid request went out bringing in Firefighters from Elyria Township and Sheffield Village to assist with the victims.

According to the State Patrol 3 of the 5 children, ranging in age from 6 to 14, were seriously injured while the other two received minor injuries. Guerra, who was walking around at the scene decided to go by ambulance to be evaluated as well. AT least one of the children was flown by Toledo LifeFlight from Mercy Hospital to Cleveland Metro.

The Patrol stated that although Guerra said he was belted in, several of the children were unrestrained.

The crash remains under investigation but Troopers do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Guerra does not have a valid driver’s license. According to court records Guerra has an extensive driving record including speeding, excessive noise-stereo and numerous operating a vehicle without a license.

FIRE NEARLY DESTROYS A LORAIN HOME

Lorain – A fire that started in the basement of a home on East 32^nd Street in Lorain early Easter morning quickly spread up the walls into the first floor of the home.

Lorain Firefighters spent about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. At one point the stairway leading to the basement was no longer safe for Firefighters to use so Firefighters on the outside of the home busted out basement windows to shoot water through to hit the fire.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. The home suffered about $50K in damages.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

MAN GOES OFF HIGHWAY AND STRIKES GUARDRAIL

Carlisle Township – Troopers say a man crashed his car just minutes after other drivers had called the State Patrol Post to report him as a possible drunk driver.

Trooper Al Marcum said the Post received calls reporting a Jeep Cherokee traveling west on Route 20 was all over the road and a possible drunk driver. “We had a Trooper close by who fell in behind the Jeep near Grafton Road and followed him up the exit ramp to Route 301 (LaGrange Road). The driver then went south on 301 crossing the highway before returning to Route 20 eastbound.”

Trooper Marcum said the other Trooper turned on his lights to pull the Jeep over when he turned onto the ramp. The driver of the Jeep, later identified as JC Steven Chapman, entered Route 20 and almost immediately drove into the median. After driving down the median about 1600 feet he then crossed over the westbound lanes and off the road.

Chapman drove down a hill before striking a guardrail on Middle Ave.

Trooper Lance Deshuk ran down the hill and found Chapman inside the jeep unresponsive. With smoke pouring from the Jeep Deshuk opened the door and pulled Chapman from the driver’s seat to safety.

Carlisle Township Firefighters and LifeCare Paramedics treated Chapman at the scene before transporting him to Elyria Memorial Hospital where he was later transferred to a Cleveland hospital.

Although the investigation into the crash is ongoing, Troopers say narcotics were found inside the vehicle and that Chapman had an active warrant for his arrest out of Elyria. The warrant stemmed from a Domestic Violence Assault conviction. Chapman also had an excessive speed (over 100mph) conviction in the past.

According to court records Chapman was born on March 29, 1989.

WOMAN INJURED IN ROLL OVER CRASH ON 57

Sheffield Township – Firefighters had to pull a woman from a car that landed on its roof after rolling over on Route 57 in Sheffield Township early Tuesday morning.

Police say the car was heading north on 57 from 254 when it went off the right side of the road and into a ditch before rolling over.

Once Firefighters had the woman out of the car they treated her injuries and then transported her to Elyria Memorial Hospital.

While the woman was being treated in the ambulance her boyfriend arrived on scene looking for her and although his hand was scratched up and bleeding he told Police that he had not been in the car.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

DRIVER INJURED AFTER CRAZY CRASH ON ROUTE 2

Amherst Township – A crash on Route 2 sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries Saturday afternoon.

A witness said the man was driving in the eastbound lane of Route 2 between Route 58 and Middle Ridge Road before the crash occurred. The witness said he watched as the car went off the road into the median and into the westbound lane. The car then went off the road again near the base of the Route 2 on ramp from Middle Ridge Road and went airborne into the wooded area. The car took out a number of trees before coming to rest against a tree.

Firefighters from Amherst had to extricate the victim from the vehicle before turning care over to Paramedics from LifeCare Ambulance. Initially officials were going to land a chopper at the scene but Metro gave too long of an ETA so the victim was taken by LifeCare directly to Amherst Hospital Emergency Room where he was later transferred to Cleveland.

Troopers from the Ohio State Patrol are investigating the cause of the crash.

CRASH TAKES OUT POLE & MAILBOXES

Elyria – A three-car crash on East Bridge Street took out a light pole and 2 mailboxes Saturday afternoon.

Police say a white Pontiac Sunfire traveling eastbound on East Bridge approaching the Post Office attempted to make a lane change and clipped a Dodge Neon causing that driver to go off the road.

Kip McGraw, 38 of Sullivan, Ohio was driving the 2002 blue Dodge Neon at the time of the crash. When the Sunfire cut him off he went off the right side of the road striking and taking down a light pole, struck a fire hydrant and then taking out two mailboxes at the drive through drop off area. McGraw first told Police that he was traveling the posted speed limit of 35MPH but later said it might have been 40MPH. Police measured his skid marks at 105’ before he struck the light pole.

McGraw and his 12 year old passenger refused treatment and transport from LifeCare Paramedics at the scene.

Jill Snyder of Elyria was sitting in the drive through at the time of the crash and received damage to her 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer after it was struck by one of the flying mailboxes. Snyder also refused treatment and transport at the scene.

Witnesses could only describe the Sunfire as being white and traveling east. None of the witnesses could describe the driver, only to say they believe it was a female, or were able to obtain any part of the license plate. Witnesses also say both the Sunfire and Neon were traveling at a high rate of speed coming up the hill on East Bridge just before the Post Office entrance.

TRUCK PLOWS THROUGH BACK OF ELYRIA HOME

Elyria – An Elyria resident was awakened by the sounds of a truck plowing through her house late Thursday night.

Police say 36 year old Chet McLaughlin of Elyria was traveling West on South Glen (a dead end street) when he went off the road, up over a small grass hill, through a fence and into the back of a house at 333 Longfellow Street.

McLaughlin’s 2009 Silverado was completely inside of the resident’s home, back wheels and all. About 8 feet to the left was the resident’s bedroom.

McLaughlin was not responding to Elyria Police and Firefighters as they tried to gain entry into his locked truck. Firefighters had to bust the passenger side window to get inside to begin treating McLaughlin who eventually came to and began speaking.

Once Firefighters removed McLaughlin from the truck LifeCare Paramedics treated and then transported McLaughlin to Elyria Memorial hospital. He was later transferred to a Cleveland hospital for further evaluation.

Once McLaughlin was out of the house a Firefighter jumped in his truck and backed it out so the resident could be freed from her bedroom.

McLaughlin’s history shows OVI’s in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. McLaughlin also has a Domestic Violence charge in 2000 that also included Resisting Arrest and Assault. In 2008 he was charged with Disorderly Conduct – Intoxication and Domestic Violence.

McLaughlin told Police he had been drinking but it is still not clear what his blood alcohol level was at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

CHEERS TO A PROACTIVE FIRE DEPARTMENT SEEKING INFO ON AN ARSON

Cheers to the men and women of the Wellington Fire District for thinking outside the box and reaching out to the community in an effort to find an arsonist.

Firefighters posted the following on their Facebook page:

On Sunday, July 8, at 11:14 am, an abandoned house at 25763 West Road, in Huntington Township was intentionally set on fire. This fire has been ruled arson and investigators need your help.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Wellington Fire District at 440-647-2245 or contact Deputy Mickey Jackson at the Lorain County Sheriff's Office at 440-329-3801. If you are able to furnish information that leads to the identification of the person(s) responsible for this fire, there could be up to a $5,000 reward.

Arson is one crime that is very difficult for investigators to wrap up and bring someone to justice. Some arson fire investigations sit idle for so long some residents and business owners who have been victimized by arsonists feel nothing will ever be done. Wellington Firefighters have shown their residents that they will do whatever they can to solve this crime and they should be applauded for thinking outside the box.

ELYRIA POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN 5 BREAK INS

Elyria – Members of the Elyria Police Neighborhood Impact Unit arrested 26 year old Benjamin Krugman of Elyria for a rash of recent break-ins.

The arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation by Detective Jay Loesch and the report indicates that more charges are possible.

Krugman was charged with breaking into the American Legion (2 counts), Twist & Shake (2 counts) and Ten to Ten (1 Count).

In all Krugman was charged with 5 counts of Breaking and Entering (Felony 5) and 1 count of Tampering with Evidence (Felony 3).

Krugman is being held in the Lorain County Jail on a $100,000.00 bond.

MAJOR FIRE BREAKS OUT AT ELYRIA FOUNDRY

Elyria – Elyria Firefighters were busy all night after a fire broke out at the Elyria Foundry on Filbert Street just before 10pm Friday night.

Elyria Firefighters remain on scene this afternoon checking for hot spots and overseeing demolition.

Fire Officials have not yet released information about what may have caused the blaze as it is still under investigation.

Several departments from the area were called in for mutual aid from surrounding communities.

No injuries have been reported.

BIKER INJURED AFTER HE LOSES CONTROL ON LORAIN BLVD

Elyria – An Elyria man was injured Saturday night after he lost control of his 2009 Harley Road King on Lorain Blvd.

Police say 51 year old Robert Golinski of Elyria was traveling south on Lorain Blvd at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve near Erie Street and lost control of his bike. Golinski went off the left side of the road and flipped over before coming to rest approximately 322’ from where his skid marks started.

Golinski was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police cited Golinski for Reasonable Control and a Felony OVI. The OVI was classified as a felony due to Golinski having 4 prior OVI’s.

POWER LINES TIP DUMP TRUCK OVER ONTO ITS SIDE

Elyria – A full size 10-ton dump truck was turned onto its side Saturday afternoon after a clash with power lines.

Police say 54 year old Franklin Skaggs of Elyria was traveling westbound on Pine Street in a Griffith Paving dump truck when the dump bed began to rise due to a mechanical failure. The top of the dump bed got caught by the power lines going across the road causing the truck to tip over ending up on the driver’s side.

Griffith Paving employees assisted Skaggs in getting out of the truck right after the crash.

Skaggs was treated at the scene and taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital. He was later transported to Cleveland for further treatment.

No citation has been issued.

CAMPAIGN SIGNS STOLEN – SIGN POST THEN USED TO SMASH STOREFRONT WINDOW

Elyria Township – With just two days to go campaigns are heating up. In Elyria Township this morning someone who is apparently not a supporter of AJ Torres, Republican running for the Office of Lorain County Sheriff, ripped down a number of signs and then smashed out a storefront window using one of the sign posts.

Russ MacNeal, owner of Underwater Dive Center Inc, said he has had the Torres for Sheriff signs in front of his business on North Ridge Road for about 4 weeks with no problems. Then this morning he receives a call from one of his customers saying one of his windows had been broken out. “I came down right away to see what had happened and found the window broken and the signs gone. The Sheriff had already been here and took the sign post to the Elyria Police Department for fingerprinting. Another Deputy was just here taking a report.”

MacNeal said it was bad enough that his store window was broken out – but then he was shocked at the response he received when he called his Township Trustee. “I call Trustee Rob Scheithauer and explained what had happened. His only response to me was, “maybe you had the wrong candidate sign in your yard.” I didn’t appreciate that at all, he’s a supporter of Sheriff Stammitti and I respect that, I just wish that he could respect my decision to support AJ and as an elected official act professionally.”

When asked if he was reluctant to post new Torres signs in his yard MacNeal said no, not at all. “This is America. The signs are going back up.”

Torres himself showed up with his son to speak with MacNeal and to post new signs. Torres said it is sad that the election has turned to dirty tricks like this. “I left my job at the State Patrol and got into this race to make a difference in the Sheriff’s Office. My goal has been to help people in the Townships who so desperately need patrol and enforcement. Since the campaign has been heating up I have had more than a hundred signs stolen, most from the Amherst area but nothing like this where a window has been broken out of a supporters business.”

VAN SLAMS INTO TLC BAR THEN FLEES

Elyria – Police are searching for the man who drove a work van into the side of the TLC bar on Clark Street Friday night leaving a giant hole in the building and a lot of shaken patrons inside.

The driver struck the Kipling Street side of the building taking out the wall that leads into the kitchen where people were working. The driver then backed out and fled the scene traveling down Clark Street towards the hospital. Pieces of brick were found on the road as far away as the hospital by Police searching the area.

While Police were investigating the crash they were contacted by the State Patrol who said they believed they had the van on Robert Lane in Carlisle Township.

The driver of the van had turned down Robert Lane from East River and went off the left side of the road where he rolled over a shrub and then came to a stop after striking a utility pole guide wire. Neighbors say by the time they got outside to see what had happened the driver had already fled the area on foot.

Although there was extensive damage to the building nobody was taken to the hospital.

Elyria Firefighters were on scene to examine the damage to see if the structure was sound. A construction crew was on scene about an hour after the crash and sealed up the hole.

DRIVER CRASHES INTO LIFECARE VAN ON ROUTE 57

Elyria – A wheelchair patient being taken to a routine appointment by LifeCare Ambulance transport service ended up going to the emergency room after the van was struck from behind Friday afternoon.

Elyria Police say the LifeCare wheelchair van was stopped on Route 57 at a red light about 500 feet south of Cleveland Street when 48 year old Karen Costa of Hambden, Ohio struck the rear of the van.

The driver of the van, 20 year old Zachary Kasperovich of Lorain, was ok but the man he was transporting complained of back pains and was transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Costa also refused treatment or transport.

Police cited Costa for Assured Cleared Distance.

DRUNK DRIVER CRASHES INTO NEIGHBORS CAR

Elyria – Early last Sunday morning Elyria Police arrested 21 year old Shaun Carson of 173 Delaware Cir after he crashed into a neighbors car parked in the driveway at 126 Delaware Cir.

Carson told Police he was traveling east on Delaware Cir when his car went off the road first striking a utility box and then a neighbors parked car. Carson was found on the ground across the street when LifeCare Paramedics arrived and refused any treatment or transport.

Officers performed a field sobriety check on Carson and after failing he was placed into custody for OVI.

Carson was charged with DUI, OVI – Low Order BA, Reckless Operation and Driving Unsafe Vehicle.

SCRAP METAL THEFT PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO OHIO’S INFRASTRUCTURE

COLUMBUS – Whether it is the theft of railroad spikes and rails or copper communication lines, scrap metal theft presents a significant threat to Ohio’s infrastructure. These types of thefts can create disruptions in communication services and dangers to the public. It can also create a significant financial burden to property owners. That is why the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) and Ohio Homeland Security supported Senate Bill 193 which creates a mandatory online registry for scrap metal and bulk merchandise container dealers in Ohio.

The online registry, which must be completed by January 1, 2013, aims to create an infrastructure within the industry to crack down on scrap theft, thereby protecting Ohio’s infrastructure by focusing on the end point - the dealers and recycling facilities. The bill also defines and establishes criminal penalties for purchasing, selling or receiving a special purchase article.

By 2014, dealers are required to report transactions through an electronic reporting system maintained by ODPS. In addition, ODPS will maintain a Do Not Buy From list for use by law enforcement agencies and dealers. The list contains the names of known scrap thieves in the area.

In order to help raise awareness and knowledge concerning Senate Bill 193, ODPS will offer training for both law enforcement officers and representatives from the scrap metal industry. The training will provide a comprehensive overview of the bill. Attendees will also receive information on how and where to register, what penalties can result for failure to comply with the revised law and ways to determine if someone may be attempting to scrap stolen property.

LCCC STUDENT ARRESTED FOR THREAT AGAINST ROMNEY

Elyria – A 19 year old student was arrested at Lorain County Community College Monday after making a threat against Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Elyria Police arrested 19 year old Shaquille Brown of Elyria after he asked his professor, “Can we leave, because Romney is in town and I want to go shoot him.”

The Professor, stunned by what Brown had said, informed him that by law she would have to report what he had said. She then reported it to campus security who in turn contacted Elyria Police.

An Officer who was working off duty at the college went to the room and placed Brown in custody. The Officer informed Brown that he was being charged with Inducing Panic for his threat against Mr. Romney. Brown told the Officer, “I don’t even have a gun to do it.”

Brown was taken to the Elyria Police Department where the Officer made contact with the Cleveland office of the United States Secret Service. An Agent was sent to interview Brown before he was transported to the Lorain County Jail.

UPDATED: MAN SHOT AND KILLED WHILE BREAKING INTO ELYRIA HOME

UPDATE: Elyria Police have released the name of the man that was shot and killed this morning as 29 year old Jeffery B Carson of Elyria.

A search of City of Elyria and Lorain County Court records show Carson has a lengthy criminal record. His history shows charges including Weapons Under Disability, Tampering with Evidence, Criminal Trespass, Receiving Stolen Property, OVI, Criminal Damage, Intimidation and Assault. Carson also has numerous Domestic Violence, Burglary, Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Official Business charges.

UPDATE – Elyria Police have released a statement in reference to this morning’s robbery attempt at 112 Water Street.

The initial investigation shows that at 2:44 a.m. the residents at 112 Water were awakened by an unknown male in the living room believed to be steeling electronics. On the early morning of October 18^th this same house was broken into and a TV was stolen.

The resident called out to the male who lunged out to the unknown male who lunged at the resident. The resident was armed with a handgun and fired the weapon, disabling the burglary suspect.

Police do not believe the residents know the identity of the 29 year old deceased suspect. His identity is still being withheld at this time.

DEVELOPING – A man was shot while breaking into a home on Water Street in Elyria early this morning.

Elyria Police responded to the call just before 3am when the homeowner called reporting the shooting. Officers arrived and found the injured suspect in a front room. After making sure it was safe LifeCare Paramedics and Elyria Firefighters entered the home and began treating the man. LifeCare then transported the man to Elyria Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Elyria Police Evidence Technicians remained on scene collecting evidence while the homeowners were taken to the Police Department for further questioning.

Neighbors say the home had been broken into recently and said they did not know if the homeowner had a gun or if it belonged to the suspect.
