Samsung X120

Samsung's first CULV laptop scores well in the design and performance stakes, but is let down by poor battery life for a segment that's supposed to promote it. Depending on your point of view it might not be a disaster, but it remains an opportunity spurned.

Mio Navman M400

The Mio Navman M400 is no feature-rich powerhouse. In fact, apart from the free search facilities for addresses and POIs, it's actually a bit behind some of its competitors in this respect. But then there's the price. We were particularly impressed by Navigon's 1210 for providing adequate features alongside full Western European maps for under £100. But the M400 offers the latter with a better interface and a 4.3in widescreen for similar money. So if you're after a functional budget sat-nav for European travel, or even just everyday use, the M400 is a bargain.

The HTC Tattoo is a very nice, small, stylish, and low cost Android smartphone. However, it certainly has its limitations like its small screen. It's definitely worth considering though.

Dell Latitude E6400 XFR

Overall, the E6400 XFR is a deliberately different proposition to competing rugged laptops. It's not best suited to situations where you really need to keep the weight down and it doesn't have the battery life or mission critical ruggedness for the most demanding environments, but it is very powerful, making it a useful alternative for anyone that doesn't want to sacrifice on performance.

HTC Touch2

The HTC Touch2 certainly isn't the most inspiring piece of mobile phone hardware but it's compact, light, very fast, and has all the essential features. Likewise, its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system still trails way behind many alternatives but it's still highly functional and is now just about usable without needing to resort to a stylus. Overall, then, the Touch2 is a good but not great smartphone.

Canon LEGRIA HF21

The Canon LEGRIA HF21 is very much in the realm of camcorders aimed at serious, enthusiast videomakers and it's a very good one too. But can its overall video performance take on the top-of-the-range models from other manufacturers at this price?

LG GT500

The LG GT500 certainly isn't the most spectacular phone we've ever seen and its lack of a proper headphone jack and web browser problems definitely put it behind some of the competition. However, it does basics of being a phone well and is low cost, small, light, and has a relatively large touchscreen. So if neither of the above issues concerns you too much it's worth considering.

TomTom for iPhone

TomTom's car kit and software combination turns your iPhone into a very capable sat-nav, similar in performance and capabilities to TomTom's One and XL IQ Routes Edition models.
Microsoft Windows 7

For once we've got a product that more or less lives up to the hype. There are still issues with Windows 7, particularly with its patchy NAS integration, but it's hard to deny its greater benefits. If nothing else Apple (and Apple fans) can no longer use the 'Mac OS just works' argument with the same gusto. Windows 'just works' too and it 'just works' with style to boot.

While the second card slot and slightly improved performance are welcome upgrades to an already brilliant camera, the new video recording mode and live monitor view are a bit disappointing compared to other premium models. The D300s is still utterly superb and one of the best DSLRs on the market, but don't trade in your D300 just yet.

Panasonic Lumix GH1

There's no doubt at all that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is a very nice camera. Build quality is excellent, and the camera body and control layout are very well designed. Performance is first rate, image quality in both still and video modes is certainly acceptable, and the extensive list of features and options give it a lot of creative potential. The only question is whether you want to pay such a high price for it.

Garmin nuvi 1240

The Garmin nuvi 1240 isn't perfect. However, unlike other entry-level Garmins we've tested in the past, such as the nuvi 215 the 1240 is keenly priced considering the features available. It includes full maps of Western Europe, yet comes in at just £110, making it distinctly cheaper than the equivalent TomToms, and only slightly more expensive than Navigon's 1210. With the excellent free address and POI searching, clear mapping, and support for City Explorer, the nuvi 1240 makes a great budget choice, particularly if you're looking for a cheap companion for European holiday travels.

Acer Aspire 3935-744G25Mn

There's plenty to like about the Acer Aspire 3935, which makes its deficiencies all the more disappointing. For the money it delivers good performance (in applications) and good battery life, too, but the lack of HDMI and an optical drive make it an awkward proposition to recommend. Still, while it misses out on a recommendation, if it fits your needs it's worth mulling over.

Palm Pre

The Palm Pre is a very nice smartphone that leaves little to be desired in terms of features and its WebOS is one of the best operating systems on the market. So, if you really don't want to use iTunes and aren't tempted by a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device then the Pre sits in an attractive middle ground. However, much as when Android first launched on the T-Mobile G1, we feel the handset doesn't quite do the operating system justice; the keyboard is only okay and the build quality lags a little behind the competition.

The T-Mobile Pulse is one of the most exciting handsets to come through our office in quite some time. Yes, it lacks the glamour of the iPhone, has a poor camera and slightly peculiar headphone setup, and falls behind many premium phones for build quality, but with Wi-Fi, 3G, a microSD slot, and a large high-quality screen, it has all the essentials for a modern smartphone. Add in the superb user experience brought about by Google's Android operating system and a very competitive price of £180 Pay-As-You-Go and we can see many people snapping one of these up.

Acer Ferrari One - 11.6in Netbook

Whichever way you look at it, as a netbook or as an ultra-portable, this is an impressive and enticing proposition. For the price the Acer Ferrari One offers excellent performance - including smooth 1080p video playback - while the balance of features, portability and usability is just right. But it does have weaknesses, namely the lack of HDMI, its innate Ferrari-ness and it's okay but not outstanding battery life. It would be foolish to dismiss this machine for these problems alone, but they do just preclude it from an award.
