Kanye West is making waves again with his latest fashion show, Yeezy Szn 10. The iconic rapper and fashion mogul recently held auditions in Downtown Los Angeles, where he scouted for models with shaved heads and an all-black attire.

The auditions drew a massive crowd, with hopefuls lining up as early as 7 AM just for a chance to be selected. Some even waited for a grueling 8 hours under the scorching sun just to show off their shaved heads and impress the judges.

It’s not the first time that Kanye has set such requirements for his models. In fact, his unique vision and unconventional approach have made Yeezy one of the most anticipated fashion shows every year.

After the auditions wrapped, the “Power” rapper was spotted wearing a special shirt given to him by a disabled person who had come in for the audition. Supermodel Gigi Hadid has been hired by Victoria’s Secret … after showing off her killer curves in a catwalk audition that was captured on video.

Gigi, 20, was seen parading in a bra top and panties and displaying a wiggle that clearly impressed lingerie bosses.

Victoria’s Secret marketing officer Ed Razek asked her: “What are you doing on November 9th and 10th … why don’t you join us?”

The model, who is close pals with Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevinge, seemed to burst into tears upon hearing that she’d been hired for the company’s next fashion show.

American Apparel CEO and self-proclaimed creep-extraordinaire, Dov Charney, was ousted by the board committee of his own company on Wednesday.

While words like “alleged misconduct,” and “terminate for cause,” are the only things being said as of right now, the true reason for Charney’s job loss from the brand he created on his own remains vague, though everyone has their suspicions.

Chief financial officer, John Luttrell, is currently taking over as CEO. Under the terms of his contract, Charney has been suspended for 30 days after which full termination will take effect. You may be asking yourself, how does the owner and creator of a worldwide, well–known brand, find himself in such a pickle?

Charney has been the subject of controversy for years, with his racy advertisements that feature models who look like they’re barely out of high school. Not to mention the hyper-sexualized upskirt photo, uh, we mean, “miniskirt ad” that the company released in March.

The retail pioneer has also been dogged with allegations of sexual harassment for years. While he may be very vocal about his feelings towards sweatshops and improper wages, Charney has kept quiet about his termination so far. Earlier this year however he gave an interview to NPR’s Marketplace in which he described himself as the company’s biggest problem and said, “I’m my own worst enemy.”

All of this comes out on the heels of a five-year slump for American Apparel, whose stocks have been continuously declining and who also reported a net loss of $106.3 million for 2013, a $69 million dollar increase over their losses for 2012.

Although no one can predict the future, it doesn’t look too bright for the sweatshop free brand.

Designer L’Wren Scott, 49, was found dead in her New York City apartment this morning in an apparent suicide. The former model, and current partner of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, was reportedly found hanged, her body discovered by her assistant at 10am.

A spokesman for Jagger, who has just arrived in Australia on tour, said that the singer was “completely shocked and devastated by the news.”

Born Luann Bambrough, Scott created couture collections, alongside designing and consulting for the costumes on a number of major Hollywood productions. Her career began as a model however, as at 17 years old she was spotted by photographer Bruce Weber, who cast her in a Calvin Klein advert. Following that she moved to Paris, changed her name, and began modelling in earnest.

She retired from modelling in 1994, citing frustration at being objectified as a model, and being told that at 6ft 3in she was too tall for runway modelling. She moved to California and began working as a stylist with photographer Herb Ritts, which is supposedly how she met Jagger.

She worked on costumes for Kubrick’s 1999 Eyes Wide Shut, 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen, and Shine a Light, Martin Scorsese’s 2008 Rolling Stones documentary. She launched her own first collection in 2006, and has since styled a number of high profile celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.

Her relationship with Jagger, who was 21 years older than her, began in 2001. The pair never married, though were frequently rumoured to be on the verge of doing so. She had to field accusations of being a Yoko Ono-style influence on Jagger, disapproving of his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, something that the two dismissed in interviews.

Whatever the circumstances of her death are revealed to be, Scott will no doubt be remembered fondly for her extensive and highly regarded designs.

There is one very dark horse in the running for a Best Costume Design Oscar, that will be given out at the 86th Annual Academy Awards taking place in Los Angeles onSunday, March 2. And his name is William Chang.

The majority of film lovers won’t know Chang. But for devotees of Chinese filmmaking and martial arts films, this dude is a total rock star.

Chang is responsible for the costumes in The Grandmaster, an artistic and epic action feature from director Wong Kar-wai; who also wrote the screenplay, inspired by the life and times of the legendary Wing Chun style of kung fu master Ip Man.

This is Chang’s first Oscar nomination and one that he was truly surprised to receive. “I did not know that foreign films could be included in the costume design nominations.”

Grandmaster’s story spans the Republican era after the fall of China’s last royal dynasty, a period of three decades fraught with political struggles and bitter wars that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts.

Chang is revered by international audiences, having won countless awards for his costume, production design and editing skills on all of Chinese director Wong Kar-wai’s stunningly beautiful films including In the Mood For Love and My Blueberry Nights.

In Grandmaster, his costumes again blend seamlessly with the sets, creating a dream-like feast for the senses with scenes so exquisite that they could hang on museum walls.

But it’s the action scenes that created the biggest challenges for Chang. “It was a lot of work. For certain action scenes, we had to keep the period style as true as possible and make the costumes a bit bigger for the pads inside each piece of costume. Duplicates were also necessary. We might have seven more of the same costume but in different sizes, depending on the action required. But in different sizes.”

The opening rain soaked battle scene – with all the actors wearing ‘20s styled suits — was particularly difficult.  “The suits move quite a bit. But you can fight in suits. There are tricks we did use, such a bit of elastic in the fabric in the armpits or the inseam of the trousers.”

Then there was the major problem of keeping the footwear authentic to the period without causing rampant frostbite.

“The soles of the Chinese shoes are made with layers of hard fabric,” says Chang. “You don’t use leather. The whole shoe is made of fabric. So for the snow scenes and rain scenes, it’s not comfortable for the actors and stunt men. I put a layer of plastic inside to waterproof the shoes and we used very thin fabrics in those snow and rain scenes adding fur inside as well. But it was still very, very cold, like 35 degrees below zero. Thankfully there were no toes lost, according to Chang. “We had heaters all around the set,” he said with a smile.

The sensual, ethereal vertical fight between Ip Man and Zhang Ziyi, who plays Gong Er, the daughter of the northern Chinese kung fu master, was also a tricky sequence. Because of the predominately black costumes, Chang had to find ways to make Ziyi’s black costume look less solid. Pale linings were used to create a weightless look.

“We put a cream lining underneath so the black is not that dark. It’s a little bit transparent feeling to create a kind of seeing through the fabric. The costume is so lightweight that she is move and it flows around her body. Also because all her costumes are dark, Chang paid particular attention to the embroidery and piping on her traditional costumes.

“We did different kinds of embroidery onto embroidery. A very light blue embroidery and on top we did another layer of cream on top. This created a 3- dimensional effect.”

By contrast, the Chinese brothel scenes were far more colorful. “The brothel scenes are from the ‘30s to the early ‘40s,” says Chang The prostitutes dress very fashionably. This says that these women are not from good families. At that time, the most fashionable dressed women worked in brothels.”

One might argue that it’s still that way, at least in Hollywood.

Speaking of Hollywood fashion, we asked Chang what he might wear to the Oscars on Sunday. Perhaps a Chinese designer?

“There aren’t any Chinese designers I like to wear,” he admitted, adding, “No one has ever asked me that… maybe Tom Ford.”

Although she’s typically characterized as a clothes horse and eyesore to women who want their daughters to grow up with a healthy body images, Barbie is quite the career woman, with more than 150 to her credit, according to Mattel’s SVP of marketing Lisa McKnight. But the iconic biology-defying doll adds another to her illustrious list of occupations on February 18 when she becomes the cover girl for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, which turns 50 this year.

Since she was first introduced in 1959, Barbie has courted controversy almost as long as she has her longtime boyfriend Ken, typically about whether or not she represents a positive or healthy role model for the young girls who comprise her target audience. Her hourglass figure in particular figure is often targeted for sending negative messages to female consumers about their own bodies.

Matching Mattel’s Barbie up with the 50^th Anniversary Issue was something that came quite naturally to both companies, especially once their mutual promotional campaign, “Unapologetic,” became involved. In a statement released on Tuesday, Mattel discussed this promotional strategy and explained the “Unapologetic” notion as something that “gives Barbie and her fellow legends an opportunity to own who they are, celebrate what they have done and be #unapologetic.” In essence, the decision offers a response to what the company may perceive as decades of public shaming over the character being “herself,” so to speak.

But Sports Illustrated’s annual celebration of the female form has attracted its fair share of criticism as well, especially as it has pushed the boundaries of propriety with increasingly risque photographs of decreasingly substantial swimwear. Suffice it to say that teaming up with Barbie for the #Unapologetic campaign offers them a similar opportunity to champion the magazine as a platform for strong, empowered women to advance their careers — in effect, going from bathing suit beauty to career cutie. Supporters of the campaign have referenced previous cover girls like Kathy Ireland, Tyra Banks and Christie Brinkley as examples of women who made the journey from Swimsuit Illustrated darling to successful businesswoman.

Despite growing opposition from various online pundits and users of social media, Mattel has perhaps unsurprisingly stood by the Unapologetic campaign, arguing for the significance it holds for the future of Barbie and her market value. Although Barbie has accumulated some $3 billion worth of houses, dream cars and multi-ethnic iterations, with African-American, Hispanic and other versions of the character, the toy line dropped 13% in worldwide sales last year.

Mattel’s argument for embracing oneself — even if you’re struggling with unimaginable wealth, success and beauty — is unquestionably worth exploring in an era when body identity and female empowerment is such a hot-button issue. But given that Mattel paid to have Barbie on the magazine’s cover, at the exact moment that the line is struggling to sustain sales, it remains to be seen whether the company’s rhetoric is sincere or just a good sales pitch.

New York Fashion Week 2014 has proven to be quite operational, thanks to the fangirl designers at Rodarte.

After presenting their Fall/Winter 2014 collection on the runway, designers Kate and Laura Mulleavey unveiled the ultimate fangirl’s dream: Star Wars-printed gowns. The silk gowns feature five classic images from the original trilogy, including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and his faithful companion R2-D2, the Death Star, and even the twin suns from Tatooine, Skywalker’s home planet.

The gowns were part of the ‘80s-inspired collection and received hard-to-come-by seals of approval from Disney and George Lucas. But unfortunately, the line is a trap: Although they will be used for editorial consideration later in 2014, Rodarte has no plans to sell these dresses commercially. Meanwhile, there’s no word yet on the cost of renting them, but the opportunity to conduct a photo shoot in your parents’ basement may not be worth the considerable price for their materials and assembly.

While the Grammys have come and gone, Lady Gaga wants the world to know about her pal Arthur Fogel.  Epix premiered their simply terrific documentary “Who the f**k is Arthur Fogel?” at the Harmony Gold in Hollywood last week.

You ask who Arthur is? Fogel, the CEO of Live Nation Entertainment, is arguably the mostpowerful rock & roll executive in rock history. He’s a humble, gracious and low-key native Canadian who literally has and is currently overseeing the most profitable mega tours in rock¹s storied history.

Arthur had the foresight years ago, when the rock world thought it was nuts, to see that the big mega tours were the future of the music business.  And boy, was he right.  No less than Bono, Sting, Andy Sumners, Stewart Copeland, The Edge, Madonna and more all herald mega talented Arthur in this fascinating film.

Lady Gaga showed up at the screening of the Ron Chapman helmed doc, uncharacteristically without fanfare, in a flowing gold gown and then she and her peeps all went to the after party at the tony Chateau Marmont to fete her friend.

Ms. Stefani Germanotta posed for pics, hung out with her lovely parents and was her charming self.  While Arthur held court, he is busy overseeing Gaga’s next tour.  Other tours that Arthur is handling are Justin Timberlake, U2, Kings Of Leon, Arcade Fire, Paul Simon and Sting and many more.  Not bad Mr. Fogel, this current kudos is very, very well deserved. Don¹t miss this doc people.  It’s an insightful peek behind the curtain to the rock world that even us avid rock groupies know very little about.  And Mr. Arthur Fogel is someone well worth knowing.

I’m sure it will surprise you to know that Miley Cyrus is naked on the cover of W. Or not. Either way, the image of the pop star lying on a bed covering up her intimate areas with a pillow has leaked on the Internet.

Cyrus will kick off her Bangerz tour next month, beginning in Vancouver. While nudity does little to shock anyone when it comes from Cyrus, her upcoming tour and recent MTV Unplugged performance should keep her busy.

Cyrus is also looking at a burgeoning legal career, offering fellow musician Justin Bieber some advice. On the Tonight Show with Jay Lenon, Cyrus suggested Bieber uses his money to buy a house, add a club to it and party at his house. Saul Goodman couldn’t have given the Biebs better advice.

In 12 Years a Slave, her character Patsey is sadly left behind when Solomon Northup is freed from enslavement and returned to his family, but actress Lupita Nyong’o is far from forgotten – evidenced by more than 30 acting awards and 39 more nominations for an absolutely devastating performance. But after laying herself bare physically and emotionally in Steve McQueen’s incredible film, which won the Golden Globe for best drama on Sunday, Jan. 12, Nyong’o’s next gig offers her a different, and decidedly more glamorous kind of visibility: she was chosen as one of the faces of Miu Miu’s Spring 2014 campaign.

Joining Elle Fanning (Somewhere), Elizabeth Olsen (Oldboy) and Bella Heatcote (Dark Shadows) for the campaign, Nyong’o models the design house’s spring line in new images released last week, which were taken by photography duo Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Nyong’o’s participation in the campaign serves as an encouraging sign that designers are taking more of a multicultural approach to promoting their lines, not to mention that they’re offering a broader variety of beauty ideals for women.

Blogs like Madame Noire noted that the campaign follows on the heels of Givenchy hiring singer/ actress Erykah Badu as the face of its Spring 2014 collection. Meanwhile, retailers like Gap are not only using models from different backgrounds, as the company did in December when it launched ads featuring Sikh model and actor Waris Ahluwalia, but protecting and defending their commitment to diversity: after Ahluwaria’s ads were defaced with racist graffiti at the end of last year, the company sprang into action, not only replacing the ads quickly but posting them as wallpaper on its Twitter and Facebook accounts.
