Here is a book summary of a tennis strategy book I just read called 'Winning Ugly' by Brad Gilbert. Brad Gilbert is Andy Murray's current coach and has coached Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to victory. He himself has beaten John McEnroe in a major open.

Main idea: Don’t need better shots than the other player. Can be a lesser player than the opponent and still win. Only just have to lock them up into playing their weaker shots and to get our stronger shots in, into their weaknesses.

Coping with Nervousness

Move feet more which is the opposite to nerves, can also bounce on feet on the spot
Sing a song
Stick to game plan and always have one

Strategy

What’s his weakness
What’s his strength
What’s my own strength and how to win most points with it
What do I want to happen
What do I want to prevent happening
Whose doing what to whom

Grab an early lead

Start well rather than at end
Start to get into rhythm – not power, work your way up
Set the pattern of consistency = no unforced errors
Don’t slack off when winning
At change over, review strategy

Winning

Maximize own strengths and minimize own weaknesses = consistently in a position where I’m hitting a shot I like rather than one I don’t like.
Try to flip this for your opponent
Hit own strengths to opponent’s weaknesses. Also minimize own weakness and minimize opponent’s playing their strengths. Very important. Sounds like common sense but actually works. For example, if I have a strong forehand loop and opponent has a weak backhand, I would try to get my forehand loop in as much as possible into their backhand. This can be done by pivoting a lot. If opponent also has a strong forehand, try keeping it out of there as we are also trying to minimize their strengths. If they also try to keep on pivoting what we could do is get them to play a wide backhand, then place it to their wide forehand, forcing a weaker than usual return, then put it back to their backhand so then they cant pivot around. Somewhere in that rally we would get our forehand loop in too. I guess template strategies would pop up for different styles.
Who’s doing what to whom
Why points are being won/lost

Destroy their game plan

There is always a way to win, we just don’t see it.
It’s not up to the opponent if you win or lose, its up to you
Don’t change you game when winning, e.g. hitting harder/riskier shots, stick to what’s winning points at the moment
When need to change some thing in the game, change shirt or something too
At pressure points do steadier shots not flasher
Make opponent work for points

Other

If own backhand sucks for example, lower expectation of that shot, just get it back over the net
Foot work affects all strokes
It’s ok to be angry at a missed shot, but just don’t dwell on it several points later
All games shouldn’t be played for fun, but played so we have a tournament tough mentality, even practice games. Basically, always have a winning strategy.
Talk to yourself like a doubles partner. Keep yourself calm and motivated.

I have made it so all the match results from the French Pro A League 2010/2011 is all on one page so its easier to find and search results. Possibly so it is easier to choose favourites :D. All results are from http://www.fftt.com. I use the find function to help me.

Motivation and Peak Performance

2011-03-13T01:16:00.001-08:00

Photo uploaded by haycon

My motivation to play table tennis is in a constant state of fluctuation as my playing and results usually don’t meet my expectations. Some people, like me, may be able to train well, have high expectations for a tournament but then perform poorly. Why? My coach said these people don't strategise well. He gave an example of me "wanting" to attack but not "planning" to attack. This made sense to me - to have a plan of attack is to have specifics down which will lead to us using our forehand loop or what ever we attack best with.

Other factors of low level performance could be:
- Being outcome orientated, or wanting to win so much that we lose. At the moment, I'm trying to play the game point by point and having a general focused and relaxed attitude in the game.
- Playing for the audience. This could vary from playing too casual, relaxed, showing the crowd that we don't ever get angry, to lobbing and trying to smash 10 metres away from the table. Either way, the mind is not on the game itself.
- Thinking too technique based in game. You see this when people try to correct their stroke in game, shadow playing it. My rationalisation for this one is that we shouldn't be trying to change our strokes in game because the game itself is too short. If it doesn't work, find a way to get around it or don't use it at all.
- You'll even hear some people talk to themselves. This is kind of a weird phenomenon where one person becomes two. They say such things as "Oh come on *own name*! Move your feet!" In the book "The Inner Game of Tennis" the author says tennis players play best when they let their subconscious play and not let the conscious "self get in the way".

I've felt deflated and unmotivated to play table tennis many of times after a loss or a bad tournament. I feel that all the hard work I have placed in to train has been for nothing. But the thing is, after watching a lot of youtube post tournament, I always come back to play. After a while the motivation springs back to life, leaving the past to be just that - the past.

How to serve with heavy underspin

2009-12-12T21:54:00.001-08:00

Originally uploaded by roivee

For ages I couldn’t serve with any underspin at all. No matter how hard I tried to swing, the ball always came up dead, no spin, making it easy for the opponent to flick, putting me on the defensive the whole game.

I tried many things to create heavy underspin serves but the main thing that influenced my serves the most was this: hold your playing elbow still when serving. This service motion is assuming the forehand pendulum. Your elbow should be tucked in your side. This makes your serving motion to only include the forearm and wrist. The addition of moving the elbow, so it shifts out foreward, will dampen the speed the forearm and wrist will generate. Tucking the elbow in and holding it stationary, using your body as a brake for the elbow will mean the bat on contact will be superiorly quick, generating large amounts of underspin.

Here are the other things I learnt in my quest for that spinny underspin serve which you can add to your game:

Peeling the ball using only the top sheet
Throwing the ball up high so the greater speed of the ball on impact will penetrate the rubber and sponge more, creating more friction thus spin. One consequence of this that it will take some practice on keeping the ball short.
Have the ball make contact at the tip of the bat. This is where the bat speed is fastest upon swinging.
Try having the bat move foreward as quick and violently as possible. To aid this, your wrist should whip foreward congruently with the forearm. This will result in hitting yourself in the ribs which is a consequence of the spinny serve.
Have the bat flat, parallel to the table upon contact. The foreward motion of the bat will take the ball over the net not you hitting the ball over with a slight angle. This takes a bit of practice to get used to. When I was trying it, I thought I was hitting it with a flat surface but I wasn’t. There was still a bit of down angle as I was afraid that the ball wouldn’t go over the net. Have confidence that the friction of your rubber will pull the ball over.
Hit the very underneath of the ball. This will be natural if your bat is flat upon impact.
If you’re shakehanded, hold the bat not on the handle but on the blade face with thumb and index finger. This will allow for greater wrist rotation apparently. This is mostly out of preference. Schlager serves holding the blade, yet produces spinny serves.

I hope these principles can apply to other serves, resulting in a spinny service game overall. Mix in a couple of dead balls and you’ve got a strong service game to lead you to victory.

A neutral shakehand grip

2009-08-07T18:28:00.001-07:00

Originally uploaded by the brownhorse

EDIT: I now realise that having a neutral grip isn't absolutely necessary. If Timo Boll changes grip then it should be okay. We just need to work on our grip change over if we do change grip though.

One big issue for me was placing the thumb pointing up on the backhand side. This enabled me to play solid backhand shots. But what happened was when the ball came to my forehand, it was difficult to play the forehand shot with that backhand orientated grip; with the thumb pointing up. Try it now, its hard to get over the ball. This forced me to change grip when alternating between backhand and forehand. The huge downside of changing grip is that it takes time within points. So unconsciously I was running backward to give me more time to change grip, narrowing my ability to play greater angles than I would if I were at the table.

After I reached a certain level, I realised this and that I needed a neutral, one grip so my crossover would be fine and I wouldn't fall back. I found a neutral grip, placing my thumb down when playing the backhand and rotating where my palm was placed on the racket also, for the forehand. What I found was that I had to bend my wrist toward myself to hit a backhand. This is what I realised that Wang Liqin does.

If you play with the thumb up on the backhand, you might have a brilliant backhand but the forehand will suffer. Or you will learn to adjust. One pro that I feel used to do this was Kreanga. His backhand is brilliant and his forehand has adapted to it. His strokes are rather weird as a consequence.

Coaches won’t necessarily pick up on this and tell you this. Well I never was told. It was all self discovery. I see so many people who are starting table tennis with this problem, and it’s only a minor thing that can largely hurt their game. I think this is why some basement players have weird styles, such as playing their backhand on their forehand.

In short, find a neutral grip. I found that after I found a neutral grip, my level dropped a bit. Don’t let the drop in level first off discourage you, probing you to revert to changing grips for each shot you play. I felt my level went higher than it would have been if I kept my backhand orientated grip.

Predict ball position with angles

2009-06-23T18:46:00.000-07:00

Playing close to the table gives you more angles to play with. You have more choices in where you can place the ball. If you are away from the table your shot angle possibilities shrink.

The safest angle to play is across the court. I’ll explain. Assume you and your opponent are right handed. Say you play it cross court from the backhand corner, the greatest angles your opponent can play is to put it down the line to your forehand or back to you to your backhand corner. If it does come back down the line, to Photo by Greatmazinger your forehand, the distance between you and the ball is small and reachable.

If you played it down the line to your opponent’s forehand, your opponent now has a greater angle to play it away from you, cross court. You will have to cross step or leap across the table to return it. The distance between you and the ball is larger, dependent on how far away from the table you are. This is because the further away you are, the wider the angle will be.

If you watch pros lob, they can read where the ball is approximately going to come back, dependent on where they place the ball. Usually they place it on the opponent’s backhand. They then reposition themselves closer to their own backhand side, as the angle is greater there. If it comes down the line, the distance is reachable; as the ball won’t be further away from them the further they are away from the table.

Playing it cross court means that there is more table for the ball to land on, but will take longer to land, giving your opponent more time. When you play it down the line, there is less table to play with but the shot will be quicker. When I hurt my back and played table tennis, I learned that you don’t need any fancy stuff to win points. Although I couldn’t move much, all you need is this knowledge of angles. My strategy basically was to place it cross court constantly, so the ball comes back to me mostly. I would play it to their backhand corner, until they were out of position to the far right or they pivot and play it with their forehand, then I would place it down the line. Less effort expended, more points won.

If you do play it down the line, always keep in mind that it might come back cross court away from you. Reposition yourself.

Use this knowledge to move around less, to guess where the ball is going and to win tennis games on the xbox :D

A third ball attack strategy

2009-02-23T17:03:00.000-08:00

This is assuming they are right handed.

Serving forehand short gives them more angles to play it away from you making you lunge for the ball and be out of position for the next shot. So, serve backhand short or long. This will make the ball come back towards you. This gives you the chance to pivot and 3rd ball attack. This seems so simple but I had just figured it out after years of playing.

You could experiment with what spin you put on the ball to make the ball pop up or forces them to chop it back long for your chance to attack or loop with your forehand. A no spin or a low topspin serve usually works. When you do a fast long topspin serve to their backhand, make it surprising and do it at a time that isn’t predictable. This stops them from being comfortable on receiving. Keep them guessing. A long fast serve to their backhand will make the return come back long so be prepared for it. After you serve, jump into a ready position that is a bit further away from the table.

Attacking the ball before your opponent does gives you the heads up on the game, putting them on defence and giving you the confidence you need to win.

Spin: arcing the ball to improve consistency

2009-01-31T18:23:00.000-08:00

Spin imparts on the ball greatly in table tennis as the ball is so small. It must be taken into account with every stroke you take.

The most vital thing I have learned, in table tennis, is to be able to curve the ball over the net and on to the table. This is why looping is the most prevalent shot in table tennis. When you put top spin on the ball, the air flow below the ball will be faster than the airflow above the ball. The faster the air flow, the less pressure there is. This decrease in pressure causes the ball to drop. This is the same mechanics on an airplane wing, just reverse. You’ve also probably seen soccer players use this to curve balls around walls and into the goals.

Take advantage of this knowledge and improve your consistency. Spin the ball, to curve it on the table.

To get more power on these shots you must increase your bat speed at ball contact. You do this by exploding your power just before the ball. When forehand looping, this is usually done by snapping the forearm closed to make contact. The angle of the blade is kept the same, just with faster bat speed.

You can use this aspect of table tennis to improve your lobbing consistency too. Place as much topspin on the ball as you can, to increase probability of the ball hitting the table. This is what Michael Maze does. Become a lobbing pro in no time.
