About Blue Marlin

Blue marlin occur widely in the tropical oceanic waters of the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific, with many fish making seasonal migrations into the temperate waters of the northern and southern hemispheres to take advantage of feeding opportunities as those waters in spring and summer. Warm currents such as the Gulf Stream in the western Atlantic and the Agulhas Current in the western Indian Ocean serve as oceanic highways for blue marlin migration and have a major influence on their seasonal distribution. Blue marlin have a limited ability to thermoregulate, and the lower limit of their temperature tolerance is thought to be in the region of approximately 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) although individual fish have been caught in cooler temperatures. Larger individuals have the greatest temperature tolerance, and blue marlin encountered at the limits of their range tend to be large fish. This wide distribution brings blue marlin in contact with anglers in many parts of the world.

Fishing techniques

Fishing styles and gear used in the pursuit of blue marlin vary, depending on the size of blue marlin common to the area, the size of fish being targeted, local sea conditions, and often local tradition. The main methods used by sport fishermen are fishing with artificial lures, rigged natural baits, or live bait.

Live bait fishing

Live bait fishing for blue marlin normally uses small tuna species with skipjack generally considered the best choice. As trolling speed is limited by the fact that baits must be trolled slowly to remain alive, live-baiting is normally chosen where fishing areas are relatively small and easily covered, such as near FAD (Fish Aggregation Device) buoys and in the vicinity of steep underwater ledges.

The Tapah as it is known in its native land is a large catfish. Once reaching over 6 feet, this catfish is now found in much smaller sizes. The natives fear it because of its known habit of eating small ducks, dogs, and small children. It is thought the Tapah became this agressive due to natives laying to rest their dead in the water. The catfish would then see this as a ready supply of food. Conditioned feeding of human corpses over the centuries created a fish that has a taste for humans!

The locals says that these fish sometime feed on monkeys as the reach down for a drink of the river. These fish when caught will try to bite - gloves and long nose pliers must be used to remove hooks.

Fishing these fish requires lines between 25 to 35 lb breaking strain. Hooks require wire trace to prevent their sharp serrated teeth from cutting your line. Method of fishing is the same as for the Toman.

Juveniles feed mainly on insects; adults on smaller fish, crustaceans, and molluscs. Abundant during the warm season; a premonsoon summer breeder. Destructive to other more valuable food-fishes. Bites strongly if handled, with its huge mouth, formidable jaws, and band of conical teeth.

The upper teeth and lower measure 4 mm in length. As seen on these images, the teeth point toward's the back of the throat. Inside, on either side of tongue are additional teeth which point forward.

Asian Arowana or (Scleropages formosus) is one of the most favorite fish in the world. With a strong physical resistance, great price and lovers scattered everywhere, making arowana fish become legend, also known as the Asian Dragonfish, like all arowanas is a freshwater scaled fish. Common mispellings are Asian Arrowana or Asian Arawana. Often growing up to three feet in length, these fish can be both challenging and rewarding to the aquarium enthusiast. One major concern with buying arowanas is that not all arowanas can be purchased legally. Currently, CITES has listed the Asian Arowana as an endangered species. While it is legal in some countries to buy and sell captive bred Asian arowanas, in other countries such as the US, it is not. Arowana breeding is common in many Asian countries. Breeding usually takes place in large fish breeding pools or breeding ponds as arowanas will not reproduce in an aquarium. Arowana breeding can be very difficult for some species, which leads to higher prices for certain arowanas. Other species of arowana are generally no problem to purchase, and cost less, yet can still be just as fulfilling pets and excellent aquarium fish.

About Arowana

Arowana fish have different subclasses; silver arowana fish, red arowana fish, African arowana fish, Asian or golden arowana fish, northern arowana fish and black arowana are commonly known subclasses. These subclasses are defined on basis of their shape, style of fins, size and origin and habitat etc.

Arowana fish vary in sizes. The smallest ones are between 24 to 30 inches (60-75 centimeters approx). Other healthier ones can reach up to 48 inches (120 centimeters). The size that the fish will become of will depend upon the living conditions and diet. If you want your arowana fish to grow larger and healthier, you should take good care of them.

You should keep the Aquarium in a healthy state. The pH should be kept neutral. Water must be changed frequently. Temperature ranges need special attention. The recommended temperature range is between 75 to 86 Fahrenheit (24-30 Celsius). A good habitat ensures that your arowana fish will be healthy and live longer.

Arowana fish are meat eaters. Typical diet for arowana fish includes brine shrimp, black worms and swine fish. Arowana fish are aggressive and cannot be friends with other fish. They have to kept alone in the aquarium. Recommended feeding frequencies vary for the different arowana fish according to age. Smaller fish should be fed up to three times a day, the medium ones twice. For grown ups, a diet frequency of once a day is good enough, albeit in a larger quantity.

As mentioned already, arowana fish are meat lovers. They are aggressive and you cannot trust them with other fish in the aquarium. They stay closer to the surface of the water and may jump out. A covered aquarium is recommended. If they are provided a healthy habitat, they may stay with you up to 20 years.

Arowana Tips :

Red emperor are part of the family of tropical snappers and sea perches, and are not truly part of the emperor family. They can grow to more than one metre long and weigh more than 22kg. They reach sexual maturity at about three and a half years, and at maturity they are around 50cm long. The adults live on coral reefs and sand flats.

Red emperors live in a variety of habitats including coral reef lagoons, reefs, sand flats and gravel patches. They are found from shallow (5m) water to at least 180m. Small juveniles frequently form commensal associations with sea-urchins. Juveniles less than 20cm long are common in nearshore turbid waters, in mangrove areas or among both coast and deeper water offshore reefs. Red emperors move to deeper water as they grow larger, with large fish often moving into shallower water during the winter months. Red emperors form schools of similar-sized individual or are solitary

Red Emperors on the Great Barrier Reef are estimated to be 20-21 cm fork length at 1 year of age and 40cm at 3 years of age. Red emperors reach a maximum total length of at least 100 cm, possibly 116cm fork length and live to at least 10 years of age.

Insert one end of the leader through the hook's eye, extending 1 to 2 inches past the eye.

Insert the other end of the leader through the eye in the opposite direction pointing toward the barb of the hook.

Hold the hook and leader ends between your thumb and forefinger of left hand. Leader will hang below the hook in a large loop.

Take the part of the large lower loop that is closest to the eye and wrap it over the hook shank and both ends of the leader toward the hook's barb.

Continue to wrap for 7 or 8 turns and hold wraps with left hand. Grip the end of the leader that is through the eyelet with your right hand and pull it slowly and steadily. Hold the turns with your left hand or the knot will unravel.

When knot is almost tight, slide it up against the eye of the hook. Grip the short end lying along the shank of the hook with a pair of pliers. Pull this end and the standing line at the same time to completely tighten the knot

Tilapia Fish

Tilapia is a fair sized freshwater fish that prefers the warm water of the tropical and sub tropical regions across the planet. It's the third most important fish in aquaculture because of their large size, rapid growth, and succulent taste. They also make a fine game fish for the freshwater fisherman.

Decide where you will go fishing. Tilapia prefers warm water that is either still or flows very slowly. If you're going to be fishing stateside and have the opportunity, Lake Okeechobee in Florida as well as the Kissimmee river is rife with this fish. Tilapia is also very common in southeast Asia and is a source of great nourishment among the lower class. You're likely to find them in most any warm body of fresh water throughout the country.
Chose a place to fish. Go out either on foot or by boat just before dawn. Look for areas near the shore with plenty of waterweeds. Tilapia will eat many types of water plant throughout the day, but they will gorge themselves on insects just as the sun touches the horizon.
Use a fly rod and reel if possible. When fishing in this manner use a simple dry fly, cast it out onto the water's surface and keep the line taught. Let the fly drift on the water, Tilapia will not tap or test flies at this time of day, but rather snap them up whole. If using a plain rod and reel use a worm wrapped around a number two hook with a bobber two feet further down the line is all you need. If fishing in particularly shallow water you might want to use a smaller hook with only a portion of a worm on it.
Jerk the rod up and back to set the hook in the fish's mouth when the fish bites.
Keep the rod pointing upward and let the fish run a little. Tilapia are very energetic and will immediately race away once hooked, though they are not known for jumping so you needn't worry about them spitting out the hook.
Let the fish run. Once the fish has gone out anywhere between fifty and a hundred yards begin reeling the fish in. Try not to pull or jerk the rod suddenly as this may pull the hook loose. Just keep the rod straight and reel in the fish steadily. After the initial burst they won't up too much of a fight until they're within sight of you. Make sure to keep your net handy as they will thrash madly when you pull them from the water.

Gaff a grouper in the mouth. Not only is this the safest place to gaff the grouper so you don’t lose the fish, but you also won’t damage nearly as much meat. Make sure you leave the fish laying in the water. Don’t attempt to pick the grouper’s head up with the rod. Let the mate gaff the fish and bring it onboard.

The Giant Snakehead, Channa micropeltes, is the largest in the family Channidae, growing to 130 cm in length and a weight up to 20kg (44 pounds). The Giant Snakehead is native to Thailand and it is widely distributed from India to Vietnam. In Malaysia and Indonesia they are called Toman, the common Thai name is Pla Shadow. Occurs in lowland river and swamp, usually associated with deep water bodies like the big hydro power reservoirs of South-East Asia. Also found in large streams and canals, with standing or slowly flowing water. Feeds mainly on fish but also takes some crustaceans and frogs. It spawns in small streams with dense vegetation. The Giant snakehead build a nest to lay their eggs in, and will attack anyone who comes too close.

The Giant Snakehead is a savage predator, and the Asian equivalent to a pike or a bass. They are aggressive fish that will take Surface lures, deep diving wobblers, spoons and even flies with ferocity! It will dive straight for the nearest snag or cover, their strong hard mouths and constant head shaking mean that these fish are the ultimate challenge for serious predator anglers.

Giant trevally are distributed throughout the tropical waters in areas of the Indo-Pacific, with a range that stretches from South Africa in the west to Hawaii in the east, including Japan in the north and south of Australia. Giant trevally are distinguished by steep head profile, a strong tail scales and many other features of anatomy in more detail. This is usually a silvery color with occasional black spots, but the male may be black when they mature. This is the biggest fish in the genus Caranx, grew know the maximum size of 170 cm and weight 80 kg. Giant trevally inhabits a variety of marine environments, from estuaries, shallow bays and lagoons as a teenager for more coral, atoll off the coast and embayments large as an adult. Young of the species known to live in a very low salinity waters such as lakes and river beaches, and tend to prefer murky water.

Giant trevally is a strong top predator in most habitats, and known to hunt individually and in school. Dominant species include a variety of fish as prey, although crustaceans, molluscs and cephalopods group formed a large part of the diet in some areas. The species has several novel strategies to hunt quite a following, including the monk seal and the theft victims who stirred up, and the sharks to catch prey. Species reproduce in the warmer months, with peaks varying by region. Spawning occurs at a particular stage of the lunar cycle, when the big giant trevally schools gathered to lay eggs on the reefs and bays, the reproductive behavior observed in the wild. Fish grew relatively quickly, reaching sexual maturity at about 60 cm long at 3 years. Both species of giant trevally are important to the commercial fishing industry and the gamefish is recognized, the species are taken by nets and lines of business professionals, with bait and bait by anglers. 1) Tofu and Soya Milk Hong

Fish Feed(Omega/Bomb brands) + Chicken Feed + Tofu/Tau Kuah + Flour + Soya Milk. This Tofu and Soya Milk Hong I found it effective against Rohu, Grass Carp, Li Koh, Jelawat, Pacu, Big Head Carp & Tilapia.

2) Fear Factor Hong

Chicken Feed + Blended Chicken Liver/Blended Chiken Intestines + Flour. This recipe is a real fear factor recipe. After blending the chicken liver or chicken intestines, by the smell of it will make you puke. No water is required to be added for kneading to this recipe as blended chicken liver is already watery. Bear in mind that this type of hong is very sticky and you may need to add more chicken feed for more solid molecule. Fear Factor Hong is created specially for targetting Patin, Pacu and Keli(Catfish)... of course also the Tilapia. p/s: The smell stays on your hand for many hours but it's worth it .

3) Whiskas Catfood Hong

Blended(Grinded) Ocean Fish Flavor Whiskas Catfood in biscuit form + Flour + RO/pond water. There are two ways of making this hong. If you have a blender, use it to blend/grind the catfood into powder form before mixing it with flour and knead with water. If you don't have a blender, soak the catfood biscuits in pond or RO water until it becomes soft, extract the soften biscuits from the water and knead them with flour, slowing adding the water which you used to soften up the biscuits. The reason why I recommend using RO water or pond water is because tap water contains Chlorine and Chlorine is fish biggest enemy which puts them off. This Whiskas Hong is effective for all variety of fishes.

4) Spices Hong

Fish Feed + Chicken Feed + 5 Spice Powder + Chilli/Curry Powder + Kunyit + Flour + RO water/Pond water/Aquarium water. This spices hong will have a strong pungent smell and colour to attracts fishes which has poor vision such as Patin and Keli. You could also get Pacu and Tilapia.

5) Tofu & Sweetcorn Combo Hong

Fish Feed + Chicken Feed + Tofu/Tau Kua + Boiled/Steamed Sweet Corn + Flour + Soya Milk. This is my favourite recipe actually to target huge Rohu and any Carp species. It so happened I was experimenting the left over sweetcorns in a cup bought from the cinema and I added in the corns into Tofu & Soya Milk hong concoction. Few weeks in a row, I never fail landing between 15 to 24 huge Rohu and other Carp species on each and every trip. Each time I left the pond with local anglers mouth wide open in awe as I caught the most.

6) The Common Hong

Fish Feed + Fish Pellets + Chicken Feed + Flour + RO/Pond/Aquarium water. As for using fish pellets in this recipe, you don't have to grind it into powder form.. if you grind it, it makes no difference than fish feed which is already in the concoction. The way of adding fish pellets into this concoction is just like the way how you soften up the Whiskas Catfood biscuits in water which I mentioned in the first post of this thread. This was my first ever recipe created 15 years ago.

7) Kunyit Hong

Fish Feed + Fish Pellets + Chicken Feed + Kunyit + Flour + Pond/Aquarium/RO water. This concoction is also a very common recipe used by many pond anglers. Variety of species can be caught by this recipe.

8) Banana/Vanilla Essense Hong

Fish Feed + Fish Pellets + Chicken Feed + Banana/Vanilla Essense + Flour + Pond/Aquarium/RO water. Most anglers tend to use this concoction in the wild. You only need to put in one capfull(equavalent to one teaspoon) of banana/vanilla essense and the aroma is very appetising.

9) Freshwater Shrimp Hong

Fish Feed + Fish Pellets + Chicken Feed + Freshwater Shrimp + Flour + Pond/Aquarium/RO water. You will need to buy RM2 to RM3 worth of freshwater shrimps(meant for feeding fishes) at any aquarium shops and pound/mash the shrimps up using a pounder before mixing them together with the concoction. Try this recipe and you will know how effective it is.

10) BungSamRan Hong

Bread skin + Fish Powder(enhancer) + Santan. This hong which is a common recipe to target Pla Sawai(Patin), Pla Buk(Giant Mekong Catfish) and Pla Coho(Giant Siamese Carp) at Bungsamran in Bangkok. You will need a bomb rig to put in the concoction and mould it into a ball before casting out. Have never try it out in our Malaysia pond but I am sure it would work as well.

Bread

It consists of two types: Original Omega smell of bread and bread-Enhanced. Original bread - unleavened bread that you buy at the market. Bau-enhanced bread - This is a special bread for the fisheries in the Greater Mekong catfish made. You can buy this bread directly from the gardening store or process the fish itself. These characters are the Super Jake, Omega, and they have four flavors: banana, vanilla, strawberry and pandan. You can see in color.

Fruit baits

These are all self-employed mixed feed. You have the right fruit to the mixture so it is a very strong smell that lasts for at least 5-10min in the water to produce. These include: raisins, bananas, mangoes, grapes, apricots, pineapple, durian, sweet corn, jackfruit and papaya. All vegetables are mixed with original bread only to everything that does not smell are listed.

Breastfeeding foods

These are all self-employed mixed feed. These include: coconut, chocolate, creamy cakes, eggs, milk powder, jam, butter, cocoa, coffee, cheese, condensed milk. They must also be mixed with only the original version of bread, no odor.

Powder feed

It is specifically designed for nets for catfish in the Mekong. You can directly from the park to feed the fish themselves or face the store. These characters are the Super Jake etc., Omega, in fact, they smell like cheese, but in a very flour. The Asian snakehead fish is actually not a single species; a lot of different species in the family Channidae are commonly referred to as Asian snakeheads. They are also known as Frankenfish and Channa fish. Snakeheads are not only native to South East Asia; many species have originated on the African continent. A few years back, the Asian snakehead fish received a lot of media attention since wild and breeding specimens were found in North American waters. The Asian snakehead is a very potent predator and if we allow it to become established outside its native region, e.g. on the North American continent, it could potentially disrupt the ecosystem.

It is believed that the wild Asian snakehead fish that were found in the U.S. originated from fish markets and/or aquarists. Asian snakehead fish is a popular food fish in South East Asia and therefore also common in Asian food markets in the rest of the world. It can also be kept in aquariums, even though it requires a very large tank and plenty of food. To prevent Asian snakehead fish from being released into U.S. waters, importing live Asian snakehead fish to the U.S. is prohibited since 2003.

Many aquarists objected to the nation wide ban, since Asian snakehead fish can not survive in the cooler parts of the country. An Asian snakehead fish released into a lake that becomes covered with ice during the winter will die, and many aquarists therefore feel that the Asian snakehead fish should be allowed as a pet in the northern parts of the country. An Asian snakehead fish needs to surface regularly to breath oxygen from the air and will die if prevented from doing this, e.g. by a layer of ice. The first wild and breeding Asian snakehead fish population found in the U.S. was living in the warm waters of Maryland.

Before you decide to keep an Asian snakehead fish as a pet, you should always research that specific species in order to find out how large it can grow and how much it will cost to feed it. Many aquarists grow tired of their Asian snakehead fish when they realize that they must provide it with larger and larger aquariums, and feed it large amounts of expensive live food. It is not implausible that the wild Asian snakehead fish populations found in the U.S. were the result of someone spontaneously purchasing a few cool Asian snakehead fishes and then eventually releasing them into the wild.

The biggest Asian snakehead fish species can reach a length of one yard (nearly one meter) and will need a very big aquarium to do well. All Asian snakehead fish species are predators and should be given meaty foods. They are fierce predators and watching them feed can be very entertaining. Do not be surprised if your Asian snakehead fish attacks a prey that is larger than half its own size. You can train your Asian snakehead fish onto dead food, and as soon as the fish understands that dead things can be tasty it will be very easy to feed. As a matter of fact, many specimens begin to investigate all dead things, including aquarium decoration, heaters etcetera.

The Snakeheads are members of the Freshwater perciform fish family Channidae, native to Africa and Asia. These elongated predatory fish are distinguished by a long dorsal fin, large mouth and shiny teeth. They have a physiological need to breathe atmospheric air, which they do with asuprabranchial organ: a primitive form of a labyrinth organ. There are two extant genera, Channa Asia, and Parachanna in Africa, consisting of 30-35 species.

Snakeheads are known by many names, including Frankenfish, Channa and Monster fish. They are popular aquarium species, but require large aquariums since they grow very big. The largest Snakehead species can become up to one metre long, and the other species will also reach a considerable size which can make them hard to keep for many aquarists. If you do not have a very large aquarium, you must make sure that you buy some of the smallest Snakehead species. You should refrain from buying a Snakehead if your fish food budget is small, since they need a lot of food, preferably live fish. Adult Snakeheads are territorial, and will often prove impossible to keep together unless the aquarium is large enough for each individual to claim its own territory.

The different Snakehead species will all have their own requirements, but all Snakeheads prefer planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces. Plants are important if you want your Snakeheads to spawn, since most Snakehead species are plant spawners. To make the setup safe for the Snakehead, you should secure all decorations firmly and place the rocks directly on the glass bottom of the aquarium. Do not keep your Snakehead with any fish that could be considered prey. Any fish that is smaller than 2/3 of the Snakehead's size will most likely be eaten. If the fish is too large to swallow, the Snakehead will simply eat chunks of it and consume it that way.

The most suitable food for a Snakehead is live fish, but they can be trained onto dead food. Once you have made your Snakehead realise that dead things can be tasty too, it will eat almost anything you give it. Some Snakeheads will even try to taste dead things like aquarium heaters. A Snakehead requires a lot of food, and will produce a lot of waste products. Large water changes must therefore be performed regularly. Changing 50 percent of the water once a week is a good rule of thumb, but the Snakehead is quite sturdy and usually survives even in poor water conditions. It will also accept most pH levels (within reasonable limits of course). Keeping the water temperatures up is important, since the Snakehead is a tropical species. You must keep the Snakehead in an aquarium where it can reach the surface to breathe oxygen from the air, otherwise it will drown. Only a very young Snakehead is capable of absorbing oxygen from the water. It is however important to cover the aquarium, since the Snakehead is a strong jumper.

Ikan Kap, atau ikan Kap biasa, adalah nama umum bagi pelbagai jenis ikan air tawar dalam keluarga Cyprinidae, satu kumpulan besar ikan yang berasal dari Asia dan Eropah. Sesetengah orang menganggap kesemua ikan siprinid sebagai kap dan keluarga Cyprinidae itu sendiri dikenali sebagai keluarga kap. Bagaimanapun, bagi kegunaan harian, kap biasanya merujuk kepada hanya beberapa spesies besar siprinid seperti Cyprinus carpio (kap biasa), Carassius (kap Crucian), Ctenophaaryngodon idella (Kap Rumput), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Kap Perak), dan Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (Kap Kepala besar). Gewang Sebarau

Sebarau memang gemar akan tempat-tempat yang berarus iaitu kawasan air yang mengalir. Ia merupakan pemangsa yang gemar mengejar anak-anak ikan yang bermain dikawasan air yang berarus.

Saya diajak oleh sahabat saya untuk melihat sendiri bagaimana bapa beliau menjinakkan Sang Sebarau, sebelum ini saya hanya melihat sebarau yang berada di dalam Akuarium sahaja.

Seandainya dilihat dari sudut yang remeh, saya tidak menyangka bahawa sungai yang saya lihat itu mempunyai Sang Pemangsa yang agresif sedang mengejar anak-anak ikan. Ini kerana sungainya tidaklah dalam, namun air sungainya mengalir pantas dan airnya tidaklah terlalu keroh.

Sebarau Yang Menghentam Gewang waktu air bukit turun

Asas utama gewang ialah kita perlu mengenali spesies buruan. Sebarau yang diketahui mendiami sungai, empangan dan tasik boleh membesar sehingga 4 kilogram. Namun jarang sebarau dapat mencapai tahap ini kerana tangkapan berlebihan. Saiz yang lumrah diperdaya dengan gewang adalah 500 gram hingga 1.5 kilogram.

Untuk sebarau 200 gram hingga 500 gram, cuba gewang kecil 5 sentimeter atau dipanggil gewang mikro tanpa mengira apa jenama, murah atau mahal boleh digunakan. Sebagai contoh gewang popular jenama Rapala Tail Dancer, Countdown, Fat Rap, X-Rap dan Skitter Pop.

Set pancing aksi ringan paling baik digunakan. Perhatikan struktur tempat ikan bermain. Kalau air cetek guna gewang selaman cetek atau permukaan manakala kalau air dalam boleh pakai gewang selaman dalam seperti jenis Minnor. Warna gewang turut memainkan peranan terutama warna yang seakan ikan sasaran. Warna oren mendominasi pilihan pemancing kerana ia seakan warna anak toman/haruan. Sebarau memang pantang melihat anak toman. Warna gewang oren, merah atau emas mudah dan cepat diterjah.

Bagaimanapun pengamatan saya, warna selain oren atau kekuningan turut dihentam sebarau asalkan kena pada tempat dan masa. Seni lontaran, gaya karauan dan halaju karaun gewang turut memainkan peranan meningkatkan sambaran. Jangan terlalu banyak melakukan lontar membabi buta kerana bimbang itu akan menakutkan ikan serta memberi impak terhadap minat ikan menerjah gewang.

Seperkara lagi, jika kita pergi trip memancing seboleh-bolehnya jangan hanya membawa satu gewang. Bawa pelbagai jenis dengan kombinasi dan warna berlainan setiap satu. Buat penilaian melalui pengalaman sendiri.

Sebarau suka menghentam anak seluang, namun ia bergantung pada keadaan kawasan tersebut. ada yang mengatakan ia juga gemarkan anak toman.
