One Year Extravaganza!

It’s been one year! To celebrate we headed back to the bar. We invited a few of our guests from the past year to join in the celebration, but with scheduling conflicts Josh Williamson was the only one who could make it. Money also was able to make it out for the festivities. It only took a few minutes for the Anime speed lines to start flying as we talked about JJ Abrams taking over directing Star Wars Episode VII. Berg wants to know from a comic insider, what will happen to Star Wars comics. Will they stay at Dark Horse or move to Marvel, now that Disney owns the rights. We also have a HUGE announcement at the end of the show. What is it? You’ll just have to listen and find out.

We gathered for the 51^st episode. Since we are having as special anniversary next week, we bumped up our what’s happening in Portland show. To start out he month, the Portland Seafood and Wine Festival will be in town the 1^st & 2^nd. Mills is looking forward to the Mardi Gras Ball on the 9^th. The biggest Football game of year the is happening for Sean on the 3^rd. His San Francisco 49ers will be playing the Baltimore Ravens. So We all make our picks. Following up on the sports topic, the College Football National Signing Day, the Beavers and the Duck’s will have a Dinner for their Donors to show off the new recruit. The triumphant return of Zwickelmania is the 16^th. Sean and Lance will participate again with a vigor. Like most months, there are concerts going on that Lance won’t be attending, however Sean, Mills, and Berg seem to find it interesting and a potential good time. We can’t do one of these shows without breaking down what movies will be coming out. There is some good stuff happening in February, get out there and enjoy the city.

We gathered at General Mills pad, now that he has it set up his new place. We start off with no direction what so ever. This continues for a while, until the ship gets righted. We discuss the moment when each of us realized that we were an adult. We all have a varying degree of thoughts on this subject matter. With the news cycle being what it is, Sports Center can’t stop talking about Lance Armstrong & Manti Te'o. Since we don't want to beat that dead horse, we instead talk about what we are looking for in a sports hero or public sports figure. Then, to bring a little class to the podcast, we discuss what is proper "crop dusting" technique. Finally, we talk about our Bucket Lists and a few items on each of our lists.

This week we have Berg and Lance’s long time buddy Carter stops by for a chat. He is a trained chief so Lance has all the guys run their best date night plate they make and let him provide his professional critique. Not sure how this derails into a BBQ and Bacon conversation, so we move on to some movie talk. The Academy Awards announced their nominees for this year’s movies. We all agree that this year is like every other, they royally F’ed up. So instead we talk about movies we like, screw the academy. We transition to another broken Institution, the Baseball Hall of Fame. They made the epic decision to elect a grand total of ZERO new members. Yaaaa Baseball. So let’s talk about Basketball. The Sacramento Kings are moving, most likely, to Seattle. Check it out and enjoy.

The entire crew is all back together this week. We get some good sports talk in this week, between the restart of hockey and the coaching carrousel in the NFL, and the guys rip on Sean’s Lakers. The guys have spent a lot of time in some sports bars watching bowl games and playoffs with other sports fans, which don’t have the class and tact that we exude. We discuss the finer points of how to watch sporting events in a public forum. Berg can’t pick a topic, so Sean revisits something he forgot from last week’s episode, the Portland International Car Show. Berg finally gets his head on straight and asks the guys whom their favorite “supporting role” in a comic book is. Which leads into a discussion, which we’re sure we’ve had on this show, “who played Batman/Bruce Wayne the best?” And as we come close to the close of our first year, we discuss possibly changing the name of the podcast.

Welcome to 2013! We hope this year will be filled with tacos and Hawaiian shirts for all of you. To start you off on the right track we have a few events for you. We start off with some movie releases in January, and with such releases as Gangster Squad, A Haunted House, The Last Stand, Broken City, Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters, and Parker, it looks like it’s going to be a Casey Movie Month. At the Expo Center on the 5^th & 6^th is the Rose City Gun & Knife Show, followed by the Portland Boat Show from the 9^th-13^th. Then get your sink your sweet tooth into a ton of chocolate at Chocolate Fest from the 18^th-20^th at the Convention Center. Catch some comedy this month as Robin Williams makes his way through town, stopping at the Schnitz on January 11^th. Or, catch some monthly nerd comedy at one of Sean’s favorite spots, The Tardis Room, every last Thursday of the month…this month is the 31^st. Also coming to town, and already sold out, is The Book of Mormon, which is playing at the Keller Auditorium January 1^st-6^th. Sean and Berg then give a run down on some upcoming concerts. And on the 19^th, catch some brutal babe action with the season opener of Portland’s Roller Derby, the Rose City Rollers.

TIKI TALKS IS BACK!!! Berg and Sean sit down and discuss the best albums (in their opinion) of 2012. Without Lance or any other member of Taco Tiki Tuesday there to derail them, we actually had an unabashed, insightful, and only slightly humorous discussion about music. There were a lot of good albums out this year, and it was hard to pick just ten, so we discussed a few runners up. Happy Christmahanakwanzapocalypse everyone! This week we venture into the center of the Half-Tard demilitarized zone to record at Berg’s new place. Sean has a theory about the Mayan apocalypse, but we all know it was another Y2K type hoax. Lance finally got his picture with Santa and tells us about the “Real Santa”. Since it’s Christmas we all share our favorite holiday traditions.

The guys sit down for a long form interview with the entire band, Violet Isle. Being comic book fans, the boys want the “origin story” of the band. We touch on everything from the start, to the name, to how the current group got together. The guys in the band talk about the recording process for their next album and how they “rock starred” a beach house in the process. There may be some more interview-ish questions that you would expect, but let’s be honest, we aren’t all that professional, and so we derail and start riffing with the guys. After having a blast sitting around B.S.ing with the band, they invite us to hang around a listen to some of the new material they wrote while at the beach.

Sports! Sports! Sports! This week the guys cover a little of what’s going on in the wide world of sports. Johnny Football just won the Heisman Trophy, so the guys weigh in on who should have won, and what the criteria should be. We briefly touch on the sad state of the boxing world and the Manny Pacquiao/Juan Marquez fight. Next we move on to the Yankees of the west…or Mills and Sean’s beloved Dodgers. Lance goes on another Tri-Met rant and somehow connects it to Hanukkah. Three of us went and saw Pulp Fiction last week, so we do a quick recap of new things we picked up on, now seeing it on the big screen. We’re all really good friends here on the podcast, but we’ve never really talked about the levels of friendship that exist and at what point does a friend move more into the “brother” category.

It’s Decembeard and the boys have already got the facial hair growing. Sean manages to pull off one of his better ninja starts, mid scotch talk. This being the first show of the month, we spend the show; well most of it, talking about what is happening in the Portland area over the course of the next month. We get the discussion started with an impromptu planning session for a Taco Tiki Tuesday ugly sweater party. Contact us if you would like to join. Lance makes sure to note that the brand new Portland Aquarium will be opening up early December, right by his house…in Portland. Sean & Berg then break down the concert scene for the month; see the list below for links to buy your tickets. The holiday season has arrived and people have been putting up their Christmas lights. If you’re lazy like us, don’t want to be Clark Griswold, and just want to go see other people’s lights, Lance gives a run down of some places to see beautiful light displays. December 4^th and 5^th is the Tarantino Festival, which gets us started on some movies to check out during December and even a “Casey Movie Pick”. Also on December 4^th is the premier awards show of the year…Portland’s 3^rd Annual Strippies! We encourage you to get out and about this month and tell us all about it.

On the 42^nd episode we start off with a bang…a very low bang. In typical fashion we go straight downhill from there. All of the guys are still “feeling the burn” from the Inaugural Turkey Bowl. Speaking of “bowl”, we jump right into the topic of college football and the hatred of the SEC. We try to discuss what each of us did for Thanksgiving, but quickly get distracted by people outside Sean’s window. Since none of us participated in Black Friday, the guys want to know how Sean’s National Record Store Day experience was. Now we’re all dreading going back to work, except Lance, who sums up his upcoming trip in the words of Vince Vaughn…”VEGAS BABY!!!” As the month of November comes to an end, it’s time to start decorating for the holidays…or in Mills’ case, not. And since it’s the holiday season, look for a new holiday themed Tiki Ten on December 1^st.

A quick apology, we had some technical difficulties, but with a guest in “studio” we had to make do. Which brings me to our guest! The boys are joined by Allen Bethel of Chronicles of the Nerds Podcast and Money makes his triumphant return. Thanksgiving is coming up, which means turkey time. Lance goes over all the various ways of cooking a turkey before declaring that BBQ is better than deep-fried. Although Berg insists that we should all try Luau-style. There have even been some hints of a mysterious bacon-wrapped turkey floating around on the Internet, so we go to our bacon expert Money to expound these rumors. Sean tells of British Thanksgiving and the rest of the guys fill us in on their dinner plans and what they look forward to the most. Some pre-dinner talk comes up about the 1^st Annual Turkey Bowl, hosted by the guys at Gabriel Park in Portland. After Thanksgiving comes the dreaded Black Friday, which no one apparently is going to be attending. However, Sean plans on venturing out to pick up some music during National Record Store Day. And when Cyber Monday comes around, we’ve got some cool gadgets (Memoto Camera & Boxee TV), movies (Bond 50), and books (101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die & The Hemingway Cookbook) to check out. Speaking of movies, the guys give a little look at some coming attractions like Zero Dark Thirty, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Parker. Sean rants about Amazing Spider-Man and nearly breaks Allen. To wrap this whole 2 hour episode up, we break down the Holiday Ale Fest.

“General” Mills and Sean’s “Special Lady Friend” join us again this week. We start with our standings on Movember. Both Lance and Sean are participating, but Lance thinks Sean might have broken a rule, so Sean gives a run down to the rules. We then describe what the perfect Inception cookie would be. Leave a comment below for what the ingredients would be in your Inception cookie. Sean and Lance try to go back to their roots and start a discussion on current comics they’re reading, but are sidetracked by the lack of interest from the peanut gallery. We pull the conversation to comic book movies so they can be included. Which leads us to the elephant in the room, the acquisition of Lucasfilms by Disney. Berg, a Star Wars enthusiast gives us the break down between what is and is not Star Wars canon. While on the topic of movies, Lance gives us his rules on movie going etiquette. With Mills’ recent move to Portland, the guys cover their early holiday plans.

November is upon us here at Taco Tiki Tuesday. That means we have a slew of events happening in Portland and some upcoming movies nationwide. Of course the election is happening today, so Beg and Sean discuss where we are in the race and what the possible outcome could be. The newest Tiki Ten has just dropped, so if you haven’t checked it out, do so; it’s full of folky, autumn goodness. Which leads us in to the local concert scene. We even have a few shows from bands that are on the Tiki Ten. There are a plethora of good movies (and a few Casey Movie Picks) coming out this month, including Skyfall, Lincoln, and Rise of the Guardians. Sean is in full participation of Movember and has included a link to donate to the cause, either anonymously or on his/Taco Tiki Tuesday’s behalf. As we wrap it up, we squeeze a few cultural items on our calendar. Of course there are always great exhibits at the Portland Art Museum, including this month’s "The Body Beautiful". At the Oregon History Museum, there are two exhibits, one on the 50^th anniversary of the Columbus Day Storm and another on local art. OMSI has an anthropological exhibit called "RACE: Are We So Different?" And finally the holidays are here, which means “The Worlds Largest Christmas Bazaar” is at the Expo Center on Thanksgiving weekend. And speaking of Black Friday, that also happens to be National Record Store Day, which includes a lot of limited releases that are available that day only. So check out Music Millennium, Everyday Music, Jackpot Records, and Trade Up Music in Portland, and Ranch Records in Salem. To tie it all up, Sean had a seasonal beer sampling at his house and the winner was Hibernation Ale from Great Divide Brewing Co. So fill your glass and enjoy a pleasant November.

Fall is upon us, which means the leaves are changing and the rain has returned to the Northwest. I’ve been listening to a lot of music on these wet autumn days. The songs are folky, mellow, and a bit of horns thrown in. There’s a few local Portland bands in here that I’m excited to see live soon, Typhoon, Y La Bamba, and Jared Mees & The Grown Children and other Northwest favorites, Hey Marseilles and Terrible Buttons. So put on a pot of coffee, grab a book, light a fire in your fireplace, and put some good tunes on the hi-fi.

So there were five Tuesdays in October, and much to Sean’s chagrin, this is a special bonus episode. Sean’s old college buddy, Mills, joined us this week. Halloween is coming up tomorrow, but parties have been happening since Friday night. Sean and Mills recap their party escapades from Saturday night…booze, karaoke, and cleavage. Out of that list Berg and Lance latch on to the karaoke. Lance doesn’t sing it and Berg goes on a tirade about Journey. The rain has returned to Oregon, which means kickball is over and indoor activities have commenced. The guys go through a few things that get them through the dreary days. Finally, NBA tip off is tonight, so the boys all weigh in with their picks for the season…and this time Sean doesn’t put any money on it.

Well we truly lived up to the title of this episode, dropping the podcast two days late. So I guess it’s Taco Tiki Thursday?! Berg starts us off during one of Sean’s patented “Ninja Starts” with a story about why you shouldn’t bring your children into tattoo parlors. Sean’s “Special Lady Friend” joins us this week, since we’re recording in his living room, and we do a quick recap of the mishap that was our trip to Seattle. The Ducks dropped to No. 4 in the BCS, and Sean rails on the guys who program the computers pretty hard. Lance bought a new car and Berg went to a “Viking Party”. We preview our Halloween plans; Sean has a laundry list of parties to go to, while Berg and Lance don’t really know what they’re doing. Finally, after a few episodes of recording out of the bar, we come up with some new phone rules…and no, it does not involve “Dutch Rudders”.

Welcome to the first noticeable change to the format of Taco Tiki Tuesday. This is the first of our new monthly interview series. For today’s show, Berg and Lance sit down with local tattoo artist Gene Hannan. This is Berg’s go to artist for all of his work. This week’s episode starts a little flat due to our abnormal recording time. However, we jump right into it by posing a question to you the listener, “What should the house rules be for phone usage when recording outside the bar?”. Leave your comments below, and we’ll pick the best one for our new rule. We quickly digress into the re-watchability of certain movies. Finally we get back on topic and tallied the total experience points that Sean received during his Level Up celebration. From there we recap the epic collapse of 3 of the top 5 teams in college football. Which leads into NBA preseason and MLB post season, which Sean does not acknowledge exists. Berg brings in a little culture by previewing the Portland Tattoo Expo, while Sean previews his actual birthday weekend, visiting friends and family in LA. Berg and Lance are excited for the new movie Argo, and discuss the evolution of Ben Affleck, highlights and misfires, both acting and directing.

European Vacation

As you all know, Lance recently took a little European Vacation. While he was there he made multiple recordings on his phone to attempt to document his adventures. His buddy Kevin even chimes in a few times to add another perspective. Now using his phone as a recording devise, somehow manages to make the recording sound like he is on a phone. Like all Taco Tiki Tuesday episodes, the amount of alcohol consumed for each segment varies greatly. Enjoy.

Welcome to the new Taco Tiki Tuesday format! This week we delayed recording to wait for Lance’s triumphant return from Europe. Needless to say, we debriefed his trip. As per usual, we digressed a few times along the way. With all of Lance’s talk of beer, Money celebrates the end of his beer-batical. Sean & Lance clash on the merits of modern art. Sean is starting back up at school and has a movie class on Hitchcock full of film nerds. He also spent the weekend at the Retro Gaming Expo selling some limited edition prints. Berg brings us up to speed on a few great films that are out right now, Looper and The Master. As a group we look forward to what’s going on in Portland in October; previewing up coming concerts, movies, and other funtastic activities. The most important of which is Sean’s Dirty Thirty (XXX) birthday party. We finish off the podcast with some quick college football talk.
