Pamela Love? More like obsessive unrequited lust.

2011-08-14T12:36:00.000-07:00

Words cannot adequately describe the extraordinariness of these exquisitely breathtaking handmade treasures designed by the legendary Pamela Love. Simply splendid.

The triumphant termination of a DSLR hijacking era. Finally one to call my own!

My pocket-sized seven-point-two migapixel Sony point-and-shoot has served as a faithful and virtually indestructable companion over the past several years. It has experienced countless dips in bubbly champagne, gone for far too many traumatizing free-fall rides, and encountered a plethora of losing battles with the rough/unfriendly/rocky terrain of trash-littered alleyways in various foreign countries. Fingers crossed that this shiny new toy does not suffer the same horrible fate! I'm still wildly uneducated when it comes to novelty photography gadgets, but trial and error is generally a good way to learn... so we took this plastic little Nikon out for a test run on my standard 'errand running' outfit.

ISABEL MARANT FALL 2011: bring on the gore

2011-07-21T11:17:00.000-07:00

I'm at a total loss of words. I'm not sure if it's the magnificent textures of these perfectly-lenthged pieces or if I'm heavily biased as a result of the stunning fringe-covered knee-high boots in various shades of soft supple suede, but I'm seriously hoping that I have recurrent dreams about Isabel Marant's fall collection. I'd gladly suffer through some gruesomely bloody zombie-apocalyptic nightmares (where donkey poop is the only available source of sustenance) just so long as I could be dressed in one of IM's fabulous poncho-esque rain jackets and armed with a neon laser shooting BlasTech Industries E-11 blaster rifle**. I think I'm officially drowning in an overflowing pool of my own saliva.

Temporary Satiation of my Preposterous Frame Obsession

2011-07-14T10:59:00.000-07:00

For some time now, I've been wanting a blackboard for the forlorn entryway, but I try not to purchase things that aren't EPIC and don't exactly fit the mental image I envision. Not that I'm horribly picky, but in all honesty it's a survival mechanism that I was forced to adopt in order to prevent my house from exploding with all the junk that I buy (and have nowhere to store). While strolling home from the grocery store the other day, I sauntered through the swingy glass doors of the local thrift store and found this disgustingly hideous piece (but in perfect dimensions/thickness of border) buried in a dusty corner under a pile of shattered mirror shards. My lucky discovery brings us to today's project: operation blackboard.

Step 1: Find a painting that you would rather throw darts at than display on your living room wall and tape around the actual artwork portion with masking tape to protect the frame from paint. I prefer to tear the tape into small pieces instead of using one long strip (it's easier to apply and remove with accuracy).

Step 2: Purchase a can of blackboard paint at any nearby hardware store (or order online). I believe there is a spray on option, but I liked the idea of subtle painted texture so I kept it old school. When applying paint to the surface, make brush strokes in a consistent direction. Wait for the paint to dry COMPLETELY, then repeat process two to three times for optimum results.

Step 3: Wait for the chalkboard paint to finish drying. Cover the painted portion with scrap paper (use tape to secure). Paint the frame your desired color (I used a flat white).

Step 4: Remove all paper/tape gunk. Hang on the wall and VOILA!

Wearing pajamas to the movies... socially indecent? I think not.

Apparently the weather gods have taken it upon themselves to dish out an unreasonable dose of inhumane punishment this year. It's July now, and the sun in still permanently tucked behind a thick/creamy sheet of low-hanging cumulus clusters. Since school let out, I've spent the majority of my time wearing fuzzy fleece socks and burrito-ing under three down blankets within the comfort of my giant four poster bed (it is sort of ironic that I'm always freezing in bed, yet I still refuse to wear pants). In light of the recent near-death-lethargic-ness a new trend has been birthed: pajamas in public! I suppose I've always been guilty of multi-purposing sleep clothes for street clothes, but as long as the bottoms are paired with a semi-dressy top, no one will ever notice!

When in doubt, idiot-proof is always the way to go.

I've never fallen in the technologically savvy category of humans, so when I finally discovered the extraordinary Instagram application, it was love at first sight. A person with an IQ of twelve could use the app with ease, and without fail each and every picture would come out looking flawlessly beautiful (either that, or my infatuation with all things vintage is seriously clouding my judgement). Sometimes I wish I could permanently view the world through an Instagram lens....

**As a word of advice to anyone who has ever/will ever consider purchasing an Antik Batik handbag: Don't do it! I stalked this bag on Net-A-Porter for weeks before finally sucking it up and dropping the three hundred plus dollars and I've been thoroughly disappointed ever since. Yes the bag appears to be pretty, but the quality is sub-par and all the fun embellishments (fringe, copper colored grommets/sequins) seem to be breaking off. I've probably spent more time reattaching pieces than actually wearing the bag.**

Epic Homegasm

2011-06-23T03:52:00.000-07:00

There is no denying that my parents possessed what you would call an extraordinarily eclectic' sense of interior decorating taste (aka complete lack of style). Growing up, the inside of our home was the hideous love child of the pastel-pink-loving-tightie-whitie-wearing-southern-country-man and the neurologically-damaged-town-pack-rat-lady that managed to keep every single piece of plastic/glass/garbage that passed in front of her gaping eyes. As a result of being traumatized by a decade of pure visual torture, I have become mildly obsessed with aesthetically pleasing images of home decoration. Between the smoothly-textured panels of the whitewashed walls/ceilings, the slabs of natural wood fabricated into furniture, the rustic copper-colored spiral staircase, and the uniquely patterned pieces that appear as if they have been hand picked from all over the world; this home is the epitome of sheer perfection.

Treasures from the Backyard

2010-10-11T11:38:00.000-07:00

Moving to a new home + upcoming midterms = very hectic life. Unpacking thirty gallon boxes and slaving over the digestion/absorption of dietary triacylglycerol isn't exactly my idea of a therapeutic weekend, so to reward myself for all the 'hard work' I decided to spoil myself with random thrift store purchases and the creation of a new jewelry masterpiece.

Giant agate slice (discovered under a pile of dirt in the backyard) wrapped with 24 gauge gold wire and bright multi-colored seed beads. Vintage books: products of recent thifting.

Fall Boot Favorites

2010-10-03T23:17:00.000-07:00

I have had a million things piling up on my plate lately and this blog has clearly suffered as a result. Since I have failed to post on the lack of excting things happening in life, I thought I would start off by mentioning the dreaded arrival of fall in Washington. While people who complain about sweating bullets in the sweltering summer heat may look forward to fall, the end of summer to us Washingtonians simply means being deprived of sunlight as a source of Vitamin D for at least six months. Be expecting a plethora of gray morbid outfit posts, but do not fret, I plan to stick to my no-pants policy for as long as I can possibly hold out. Since I will be living in tights and leggings, the search is on for a pair of mid-height booties which will preferably have at least a four inch heel/wedge, cover my ankles, and be made of durable material that can handle mud/rain/dog fecal matter/whatever a clumsy spazz can manage to stumble into (NO suede). Last year I looked for the 'perfect' fall boot and was utterly disappointed with the results, but this year it seems that designers got it together and released an enormous selection of juicy foot candy which I am drooling with excitement over (the credit card on the other hand, isn't sharing this same sentiment). Here are several of my favorites:

1. Jeffrey Campbell Exam $159.95

2. Senso Neve $199.95

3. Topshop Asher II $80.00

4. Jeffrey Campbell Denmark $194.95

5. Dolce Vita Prince $134.95

6. Sam Edelman Zoyla $224.95

I find myself leaning towards shoe number five.... Call me delusional, but the utilitarian looks gives me the impression that the 'Prince' can handle the beating/trashing/serious abuse that I plan to deliver.

Die Another Day: GIVEAWAY?

2010-09-23T21:03:00.000-07:00

I have unofficially made it 4/5th of the way through the first week of medical school (which feels much closer to thirteen years than ninety-six measly hours). I have contemplated, on several occasions, taking a slide down the chute of the large annoyingly-yellow mechanical wood-chipper parked in the neighbor's driveway... but for once in my life I have managed to resist the erratic tendencies. Since I shall live to see another lovely sunrise, I would like to announce my very first giveaway.

Say hello to the GARDEN ROSETTE bracelet, a pretty little Kelly green bangle delicately wrapped with gold wire (handmade by myself)! Enter for a chance to win by:

b)writing a random tidbit/interesting fact about yourself in the comment section

c)thinking positive thoughts!

Unexpected Adoption

2010-09-19T22:40:00.000-07:00

Marc Jacobs Dress, Vintage Belt, Bakers Wedges, Ray Ban Aviators, Leather Handbag Purchased on Via Tornabuoni in Florence Italy

Post fashion week I've been experiencing an insatiable desire to purchase/wear neutral tones, delicate lace pieces, and military inspired clothing. However, while meandering around the store the other day, the colorful print on this little dress caught my eye and literally begged to be tried on. Although it could not be farther from what I was originally searching for, I caved and was forced to give it a home.

Daniel Rainn Silk Top, Carla Mancini Penelope Bag, Forever 21 Leather Shorts and Wedges

In college I had literally zero fashion sense. I cringe in disgust just thinking about the heinous outfits I allowed myself to walk out the door with back in the day. I mean platform foam thong sandals themselves should be considered a fashion crime, but paired with pink Adidas tear-away pants and mid-riff baring tube tops? VOMIT. Words cannot adequately describe the foulness of my style (or lack thereof). I’m seriously surprised my friends didn’t beat me unconscious with a chemistry textbook and force a change of clothes upon me before showing their faces in public in my company. I’d like to think I’ve come a long way since then, upgrading to semi-sheer silk tops, leather shorts, and piles of chunky jewelry. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that five years from today, I can look back on my current style in a slightly more positive light than I do the platform-sandal-pink-pants-combo!

This is the Life

2010-09-08T16:32:00.000-07:00

Spontaneity is the key to life, something which is only a couple clicks away with Priceline.com's new 'name your own price' option. I've been dreading the dreary fall weather for some time now, so on Sunday night I impulsively purchased a ticket to the beautiful island of Oahu. Not only does the sun shine year round in Hawaii, but the people are exceedingly friendly and the selection of exceptional food is truly unsurpassable. Experiencing the island requires venturing outside the tourist trap of Waikiki and into local grocery stores and hole-in-the-wall restaurants where you can expect to find homemade plate lunches, fresh poke (bite sized pieces of raw-fish doused in seasoning), and tantalizing chunks of thick juicy sashimi. Some vacations are all about adventure and exploration, but not this one. I fully intend to simmer by the pool/at the beach, consume an unprecendented number of alcoholic beverages, and shamelessly gorge myself on island cuisine.

Life is a Neverending Excuse to Shop

2010-09-04T01:37:00.000-07:00

It's that time of year again, when the leaves start falling and you find yourself being abruptly woken by the familiar high pitched sound of children screaming/roaring of ratty old yellow school buses every single weekday morning. In college, being an exercise major and all, the majority of my classes took place in the 'field house' aka dingy windowless school gym which hasn't been penetrated by a vacuum in the last three-and-a-half centuries. After one hour of quality classroom time, you could expect to have dust in your eyes and the lingering smell of roller-skating-rink-lost-and-found-socks all over your clothes. Let's just say that there was hardly any pressure to look presentable. However, with graduate school just around the corner, I feel that it is time to turn over a new leaf and upgrade my reliable-but-generic North Face backpack to something slightly more sophisticated. As much as I would love to saunter around school with a smooshy pebbled leather bag slung across my shoulders, the sporadic bouts of torrential downpour in Washington makes such a thing rather impractical (so I'm leaning towards canvas or polyurethane). Please help me decide! Which one is your favorite?

Clockwise from top left:
1. ASOS Faux Croc Bar Day Bag $60.66
2. ASOS Urban Academy Canvas Bag $53.92
3. J. Crew Rugged Twill Messenger Bag $128
4. ASOS Leather Slot Through Satchel $109.53
5. Marc by Marc Jacobs Modern Military Messenger $260
6. J. Crew Bowery Messenger Bag $98

Maxi = Perfection

H&M Garden Collection Maxi Dress, Marc Jacobs Baby Aidan Bag, Cynthia Vincent Wedges, Earrings handmade by moi

For the past week I've been stranded without a photographer (due to an impromptu Hawaii trip on his part), but my partner in crime has returned at last! We celebrated by treating ourselves to an always-too-spicy but oh-so-tasty meal at the smallest jankiest restaurant you could ever imagine aka Thai Tom in the University District (I swear we eat meals that require forks and not just chopsticks, but for some odd reason those pictures never make it to the blog). Gosh, I would relinquish more than fifty percent of my vital organs to have tropical weather year round, but since the state of Washington is allergic to sunlight I have found that maxi dresses are the perfect investment. They are A) immensely comfortable, B) much warmer than a mini dress -- hence removing the necessity of a sweater, C) long enough to hide a pair of footless leggings if you so desire, AND last but not least: if you enjoy the luxuries of commando-ness you can do so with class (we don't all aspire to become Lindsay Lohan).

Chase the Giant Tin Pig, It's Worth It

2010-08-21T22:05:00.000-07:00

Lately I have been encountering an unusual amount of extraordinary food as well as some unexpected good luck. Topping this list would have to be last weekend's adventure to St. Vincent's de Paul thrift store, where I inadvertently discovered seven hundred and fifty dollars tucked into the right-side pocket of a sparkly cobalt blue blazer!!! Yes, I kept it (Mom, please don't be angry). My friends and I spent a considerable amount of time speculating where this money could have come from (drug deal gone wrong/forgetful rich old lady/prostitution ring?) but couldn't come to a final conclusion. Have any interesting theories? Please share.

Second on my list would have to be the most delicious sandwich I have ever tasted in my twenty three years of life! This mouth-watering pulled pork sandwich, purchased from the eccentric Maximus/Minimus giant pig truck circumnavigating downtown Seattle, features the perfect balance of spicy and sweet. The succulent meat, the layer of fresh crunchy cilantro, and the generous sprinkle of shredded Beecher's Flagship cheese accompanied by a side of tangy cole slaw make this meal absolutely to die for (especially when followed up by dessert of beer and fluffy pink cotton candy).

Last but not least, my boyfriend kindly gifted me a box of creamy chocolates from Fran's Chocolates. The milk and dark chocolate salted caramels, which were by far my favorite, are a harmonious blend of soft buttery caramel and rich smooth chocolate topped with bold crunchy salt. One dainty bite of these organic chocolates and you will no doubt experience an intense orgasm of the mouth!

Hour of Happiness

2010-08-16T23:59:00.001-07:00

Hello, my name is Joy and I am a happy hour addict. Truthfully speaking, I'm not enticed by the drink specials nearly as much as I am obsessed with the idea of munching on an assortment of delightful food items without having to wash the dishes afterwards. Kozue, one of the Japanese restaurants that I enjoy visiting on a regular basis, has a fantastic happy hour from five to six-thirty every day of the week except Sunday (closed). The menu options are plentiful, the food is consistently delectable, and the outdoor deck seating is easily prime people watching real estate. On sunny days such as this one, a plate of crunchy salmon skin rolls and an ice cold beer followed by a leisurely stroll through the lovely neighborhood is my idea of a perfect afternoon adventure!

Please Don't Shoot Me

2010-08-11T23:43:00.000-07:00

Last night I fired my very first Heckler & Koch P30 aka. pistol (for those of you who are non-weapon savvy, like myself). I anticipated that this whole gun range experience would be liberating and epic, but in actuality I found it exceedingly frightening. Aside from being intimidated by the badass lady firing a nine-foot-ground-shaking cannon in the lane directly to my right, my lack of skill resulted in the 'range instructor' being terrorized into providing me with free lessons (apparently he feared for his life from the opposite side of the plexiglass window). So today, feeling like an immense failure in my manly endeavors, I decided to ransack my closet for the most feminine outfit I could dig up. Who needs guns when you can have a dresser full of dainty floral skirts and buckets of chunky shiny jewelry?

Rain Rain Go Away

2010-08-07T22:45:00.000-07:00

This morning I woke up to dismal grey skies and the familiar sound of heavy raindrops splattering on the window above my bed. I always find less than ideal weather as the perfect excuse to hide in the house, devour a plethora of soft-bake cookies, and make jewelry (today's project involved two rectangular pale pink agate stones and some gold wire). Feeling a little depressed from the weather I decided to treat myself to an afternoon of thrift store shopping followed by a trip to Than Brother's Restaurant, a delicious little Pho joint in Ballard. Not only are the steamy bowls of noodles drool worthy, but the service is lightening quick, dessert (creme puff) is brought out BEFORE the meal, and the prices are utterly unbeatable.

Pillow Talk

2010-08-04T18:23:00.000-07:00

While flipping through my haphazard collection of clippings this afternoon I re-discovered a hidden gem: House Beautiful magazine's December edition spread featuring pillow arrangements. It is rather ironic that I instantly fell in love with this article (considering the fact that I have made my bed less than four times in the past decade), but the thought of pillow displays as a reflection of personality is oddly fascinating to me. IF I were to begin organizing my bed on a regular basis, I would definitely favor the Bohemian setup. What about you?

A BOHEMIAN personality likes to toss the pillows although keep some coordination as well.

A TAILORED pillow arrangement could mean that you are organized and that your ducks are in a row.

Lots of pillows, including ruffles, may be a sign of someone who is ROMANTIC.

The MODERNIST prefers to lay pillows flat and organized.

If you perfectly prop the pillows with a single accent pillow then you are TRADITIONAL by nature.

Creme Brulee

2010-08-01T17:05:00.000-07:00

This weekend we celebrated my Dad's birthday with a massive seafood feast at the Crab Pot in Bellevue. After hammering away at an assortment of shelled goodies and watching my toothless Grandma dunk her dentures in a water glass (SUPER unappetizing) it was time to order dessert. My Dad studied the menu for what felt like three hours, then finally pushed the menu aside and asked the sever for a "Cweeem Brew-Lee, please." Of course we couldn't help but erupt in laughter. Yes, we all felt a little guilty for laughing at the birthday boy, but at least it was a comical way to end the lovely night. Happy Birthday Dad!

Salsa Overload

2010-07-28T20:12:00.000-07:00

The weather in Seattle was rather uninspiring today, so I opted for staying home and eating copious amounts of tortilla chips and salsa. One whole 14 ounce bag of Cabo Loco and a one pound container of Rojo's Fresh Cut Salsa later and I felt like an obese panda. Aside from nearly snacking myself to death, the only other productive thing I accomplished today was photographing some of the jewelry I made semi-recently. My picture taking skills could probably use some improvement (or a perhaps a new camera would suffice) but here are some of my favorites:

Bluish-teal seed beads, white seed beads, gold wire, opaque Swarvoski crystal eyeball

Seafoam beads, cream colored prism-shaped seed beads, copper wire

Random thought of the day: A donkey/zebra hybrid is called a "zedonk."

If you've been following the blog thus far, you know I've been obsessing over this tree I ran into last week. I plan to put this unfortunate event behind me, however I would just like to point out that the day after my incident THEY CUT DOWN THE TREE and put a giant fatty fluorescent orange cone next to the stump! Clearly I wasn't the only person that found this plant hazardous. If only I had walked down that street one day later... sigh. Okay so on a more interesting note, I have several things to report:

1) For all those sweet lovers out there, you absolutely must go try Molly Moon's Handmade Praline Ice Cream Sandwiches... Ohhh they are to die for (although I must admit that their Scout Mint ice cream in a fresh crispy waffle cone is pretty epic as well). If you visit the store post dinnertime you will most likely wait a minimum of one hour, so I would suggest making a trip earlier in the day and requesting a split single scoop (which is huge and allows you to experience two delectable flavors for the price of one!)

2) If you are a fan of the shoe brand Dolce Vita, the designers secretly did a collaboration with Target! The collection was supposed to be exclusively sold at the grand opening of their new store in Harlem, but lucky for us that is no longer true. You can find an assortment of boots, flats, and oxfords on sale now at Target.com!

3) I am currently on the lookout for an easy-to-use sewing machine. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

When in Doubt, Paint it Gold

2010-07-21T23:47:00.000-07:00

Yesterday as I was walking to the grocery store to pick up wine and a movie, a dilapidated pile of junk with a shabby FREE sign caught my eye. Amongst the random pieces of plywood, the rusty chairs, and the broken dresser drawers I discovered a treasure: aka an ugly framed photo! I contemplated carrying it to the store, but after much consideration, decided it would be better to stash it in some nearby bushes for later retrieval (a wise decision considering my lack of coordination would probably have lead to chaos in the form of an astronomical watermelon avalanche or the disastrous destruction of wine displays).

So back to the treasure: if any of you are half as picky as I am, then you know that it's nearly impossible to find a jewelry stand/rack that you love. Either it's A) too small, B) too easy to knock over, C) just plain ugly... etc. Here is a simple alternative, where you can not only choose the color and size of your liking, but also experience the added benefit of wall mounting (to prevent from all possibilities of a future Jewelry 9-11 catastrophe).

Step 1: Find a frame (garage sales and thrift stores are usually good places to look).

Step 2: Spray on a layer of primer and wait for it to dry completely before applying color.

Step 3: Spray on the color of your choice and wait for the paint to dry. Check for spots you may have overlooked before attaching hardware.

Step 4: Use a ruler to make evenly spaced out markings on the back of the frame where the hooks will be attached (I used basic 5/8" brass plated hooks purchased at Home Depot). Since the hooks I used were open instead of fully enclosed, I used a pair of pliers to bend two hooks completely shut (used to attach the tulle at the top part of the frame). Screw one of the closed hooks on the top left corner on the frame and the other on the top right. Tie one end of a piece of fabric to the left hook and the other end to the right hook (ribbon could also work if you prefer).

Step 5: Enjoy your custom made jewelry rack! (the pieces hanging here are part of my new jewelry collection soon to be on sale my Etsy store!)

Lazy Hazy Monday

2010-07-20T01:06:00.000-07:00

Urban Outfitters Tee, Lucky Brand Shorts, Marc Jacobs Hillier Hobo in Electric Violet, Chloe 2119 Sunglasses, Cynthia Vincent wedges

Mondays are always slow and today has been no exception. However, today marks the first day of a two-week vacation, so instead of frantically rushing out the door with a handful of candy and a slice of leftover pizza for breakfast, I slept in until noon and lounged on the couch in pajamas (watching Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for the one hundred and fifty seventh time). As happy hour rolled around, I threw on the first pair of shorts and t-shirt I could find on the floor and headed down the street to Chupacabra to eat chips and people watch from their funky little patio. It has been four days since the tree incident and I am happy to say that the swelling has finally subsided. Sorry friends, you are no longer going to be able to recognize me as the lopsided alien with the enormous external brain tumor.
