Abrams: Invisible woman, we're still trying to find the right place to make it because it's a very specific, small, niche movie but Matt Reeves wrote an incredible script that is such a wonderful role for an actress. We have a lot of people in mind but we're meeting a number of people. But Cloverfield 2, we're still talking about it but the fact is, I just didn't want to do a sequel, but there's another idea that's going around that could be kind of cool.

The enigmatic shroud surrounding Cloverfield's menacing creature gets pulled back even further on the Blu-ray version of the movie, which roars into stores Tuesday.

Hard-core Cloverfield sleuths can gain special insight into the monster that trashed Manhattan thanks to the disc's Special Investigation Mode, an optional in-film feature that provides tidbits of trivia about the creature's physical characteristics and location throughout the movie. Additionally, a map tracks the locations of main characters, military personnel and the "large-scale aggressor" that made the movie a box office beast.

The Blu-ray release includes all the extras from the previous two-disc DVD release: slightly tweaked alternative endings and meaty featurettes (including behind-the-scenes video diaries, explorations into the CGI world of New York under attack and the mechanics of cobbling together the megamonster that wreaks havoc throughout the film).

Wired.com nabbed Cloverfield director Matt Reeves (pictured above, right, with actor T.J. Miller) for a brief telephone chat about the rumors swirling about Cloverfield 2 and straying from sci-fi for his next project, The Invisible Woman.

Wired: There's been a lot of back and forth about whether or not a Cloverfield sequel is in the works. Can you set the record straight for us?

Matt Reeves: I can say that we really hope we could do it. It's in a pre-baby stage. Right now, it's still like in the single-cell version of itself. It's not a viable life form yet. But the truth of the matter is, we're not 100 percent that we're going to do it. I have a couple of ideas, Drew [Goddard, a Lost alum who penned the first Cloverfield script] has a couple of ideas, but we just finished this one, and we haven't had the time to evaluate what's next.

This isn't me being evasive, but it's literally just too early to tell. We promised ourselves that we would have to come up with something just as fresh and fun, 'cause you don't want to repeat the experience. We don't want to be repetitive. It's an unusual problem, but a cool one, to see what would come out of it.

Wired: Does that mean the monster is definitely alive? That seemed to be hinted at in the muffled radio static after the credits.

Reeves: If there's a continuation like a sequel, then one would think there's something still going on. Whether it's that monster or not, I don’t know. We know the film would need a fresh perspective, and I don't think that means just picking up where we left off. But I can't even confirm anything in that direction.

Wired: You're killing us, Matt!

Reeves: [Laughs] I know. I'm sorry. This is like my pre-Cloverfied interviews where I couldn’t give anything else away, except there just isn't anything to give away this time. But I know that J.J. [Abrams], Drew and I really want to work together again, and hopefully it'll be Cloverfield 2, and if not, then something else cool. And I'll keep you in the loop.

Wired: The movie recently debuted in Japan. How did that go over, considering the film's roots in the ultimate creature feature, Gojira, or Godzilla?

Reeves: It was No. 1 in Japan for the first two weekends -- it created a big stir, which was very exciting. We didn't know how the audience there would respond to the viral marketing, and it went over very, very well. The culture is so different -- everyone is so kind and polite -- that it was hard to get a real feeling for it, but at the screening the audience went crazy. I'd actually never been to Japan, so it was really cool to have Cloverfield bring me there.

Wired: What's different about the Blu-ray release?

Reeves: Even though we shot the whole movie on a Handycam, it was actually shot in HD. I'm excited for people to see [the monster] in its full, pristine environment. I need to get a copy of the DVD too! I'm anxious to see it in Blu-Ray.

With Cloverfield winding down and a sequel uncertain, Cloverheads are going to need something to fill the time. If only Bad Robot had another project in the pipeline that possessed all the same elements as Cloverfield: the mystery, the intrigue, the viral websites, the promise of cool shit. If only...

So some of you may be aware of my other, new obsession, JJ Abrams' Fringe. The network upfronts were last week and not only was Fringe officially picked up for its first season, its marketing campaign was kicked off as well. There are posters and trailers and yes, as of today, confirmation of a viral marketing campaign.

In short, Fringe is on track to be the next big thing. I kind of figured that might be the case which is why I've been building my idea of the ultimate Fringe fan site for the better part of the last 2 months. So have a look. I think you'll find the site benefited from my Cloverfield experience, and hopefully you'll judge it worthy of your readership and participation because in my estimation, Fringe could not only use a few good Cloverheads, but Cloverheads shifting their collective focus from Cloverfield to Fringe en masse would be a thing of beauty.

J.J. Abrams, co-producer of the hit monster film Cloverfield, said that a sequel may or may not happen and revealed that he's more inclined to do something with his Cloverfield partners, writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves, other than a follow-up.

"We're talking about it," Abrams said of Cloverfield 2 during an interview at the Fox upfront presentation for advertisers in New York on May 15, where he was promoting his upcoming SF TV series Fringe. "But the truth is there's another idea that I'd rather do with the same people than do a sequel. It's a whole new thing."

Abrams added, "So my dream is to work with [Goddard and Reeves] again, but do something that's [new]. Having said that, Drew and Matt both, separately, have really good ideas for what [Cloverfield 2] could be. So I don't know. We'll see. I know the studio wants it." --Ian Spelling

High-Def Digest gets a look at the Cloverfield Blu-ray box art and the full details on all the extras:

Now full details are in, with the Blu-ray set to include all of the extras found on the DVD. Among the bonus features is an audio commentary with director Matt Reeves, four featurettes ( "Document 01.18.08: The Making of Cloverfield," "Cloverfield Visual Effects," "I Saw It! It's Alive! It's Huge!", "Clover Fun"), four additional scenes, two alternate endings, and no less than fourteen hidden easter eggs.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be the Cloverfield "Special Investigation Mode" picture-in-graphics track.

If you watch LOST, you're probably familiar with the "enhanced" versions of the show where they insert text in pop-up fashion throughout the episode letting viewers in on clues and back stories. Special Investigation Mode looks to be the theatrical equivalent.

Unfiction poster liz_sparkles (who joined Unfiction today), notes the latest published comment on Tidowave.

Anyone who’s tired of being lied to should come to my blog. We have to stick together. There are more people out there affected by this. I can’t be the only one.

In response to that comment, liz_sparkles decided to check and see if MissingTeddyHanssen had a blogspot of the same url. Sure enough, http://missingteddyhanssen.blogspot.com/ is live and its owner claims to be Alyse Hanssen, Teddy Hanssen's sister.

So is MissingTeddyHanssen.Blogspot in-game? I personally checked that blogspot url a few days ago. At that time the blog url was taken, but there was no published blog. Looking at the blog posts, their "Post dates" have clearly been manipulated (I could date this post yesterday if I chose). Case in point, the very first post on the blog with the visible post date of "Thursday, March 20, 2008" has a url post date of April/2008 (http://missingteddyhanssen.blogspot.com/2008/04/ok.html). After that it appears the blogger backdated the posts prior to publishing them. I would like to say I trust the PMs, but even so, the comment on Tidowave (read: approved by them) doesn't explicitly link to MissingTeddyHanssen.Blogspot.

Nevertheless, it's interesting, even if it is a game-jack.

Cloverfield Clues is giving away 3 (studio provided) Cloverfield DVDs contest style and has also posted a detailed DVD review.

As a longtime (but not always close) reader of Clues, the interesting wrinkle here is confirmation that a freelance blogger (Dennis), starting from scratch, managed to get noticed by Paramount and develop a special relationship with the studio. Bravo Dennis. As I've said before, if anyone deserved recognition of the studio, it was you (links available upon request).
