Higher Dissolved Oxygen Content of Ganga

An Indian environmental engineer, D.S. Bhargava after three years of thorough study of Ganga concluded that Ganga is able to reduce its biochemical oxygen demand level much faster than other rivers. Bhargava says, organic materials usually exhaust a river’s available oxygen and starts putrefying. But in the Ganges, an unknown substance acts on organic materials and bacteria and kills them. He further adds Ganga’s self-purifying quality leads to oxygen levels 25 times higher than any other river in the world.

Hindus have always believed Ganga Jal to be pure, pious and drinkable no matter what. Much reverence is given to Ganga water during Hindu rituals (from birth to death). But is there really any scientific validity to prove it?

In 1896, Ernest Hanbury Hankin (a British bacteriologist) after testing the water from Ganga wrote a paper that was published in French Journal describing that the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae that causes the deadly cholera, when put into the waters of Ganga died within three hours. The same bacteria continued to thrive in distilled water even after 48 hours. He also suggested that the water of this river and its tributary Yamuna were responsible for containing the spread of deadly cholera in the region in those days. Similarly in 1927, Félix d’Herelle (a French-Canadian microbiologist) was amazed to find no germs at all in water collected just few feet below the floating bodies of people who died of cholera and dysentery. The presence of bacteriophages (viruses that kill bacteria) in the water of Ganges is considered as the reason behind this quality and its purity.

The first national flag in India is said to have been hoisted on August 7, 1906, in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta now Kolkata. The flag was composed of three horizontal strips of red, yellow and green.

The second flag was hoisted in Paris by Madame Cama and her band of exiled revolutionaries in 1907 (according to some inl9OS). This was very similar to the first flag except that the top strip had only one lotus but seven stars denoting the Saptarishi. This flag was also exhibited at a socialist conference in Berlin.

The third flag went up in 1917 when our political struggle had taken a definite turn. Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak hoisted it during the Home rule movement. This flag had five red and four green horizontal strips arranged alternately, with seven stars in the saptarishi configuration super-imposed on them. In the left-hand top corner (the pole end) was the Union Jack. There was also a white crescent and star in one corner.

During the session of the All India Congress Committee which met at Bezwada in 1921 (now Vijayawada) an Andhra youth prepared a flag and took it to Gandhiji. It was made up of two colours-red and green-representing the two major communities i.e. Hindus and Muslims. Gandhiji suggested the addition of a white strip to represent the remaining communities of India and the spinning wheel to symbolise progress of the Nation.

The year 1931 was a landmark in the history of the flag. A resolution was passed adopting a tricolor flag as our national flag. This flag, the forbear of the present one, was saffron, white and green with Mahatma Gandhi's spinning wheel at the center. It was, however, clearly stated that it bore no communal significance and was to be interpreted thus.

On July 22, 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted it as Free India National Flag. After the advent of Independence, the colours and their significance remained the same. Only the Dharma Charkha of Emperor Asoka was adopted in place of the spinning wheel as the emblem on the flag. Thus, the tricolour flag of the Congress Party eventually became the tricolour flag of Independent India.

Facts about Charminar

Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah constructed this landmark in the year 1591.
People say that it is the result of a secret promise made by Md. Quli Qutb to honor Allah.
The building acquired it’s fame because of the four minarets.
These four minarets symbolize and honor Islam’s 1st four Khalifas.
The mosque actually occupies the top most floor of the monument.
The minarets are actually the four storey structures.
It is also said that there is an underground tunnel that links the charminar to Golconda Fort, which was the former capital of Quli Qutb Shah, and provides an escape route to the royal family in case of an emergency. However the location of the secret tunnel is unknown
Charminar is an exact square monument which is an ideal example of India’s architectural background. The structure of the monument is a perfect square where each of the side measures 20mtr and the two sides are connected with a tall minaret which is a 4 storey building with a height of 48.7 mtrs.
The four stories of each minaret is marked by carved ring which is visible from outside.
To get to the top floor one has to climb 149 flights of steps. All the four minarets are enclosed by 149 flights of steps.
Each side of the Minar has a giant arch, which is 11 m wide and 20 m high, measuring from the summit to the plinth.
Each arch also has a clock, which was installed in 1889.
The Charminar is a monument built with granite and lime mortar in Cazia style of architecture.
Within Charminar there lies two one over another.
Along with a stone balcony there is a terrace above the two galleries which acts like a roof.
The main gallery of the Minar has 45 covered prayer spaces. Just in front, there is a large open space to accommodate more people for prayers on Fridays.
The intricate carvings and moldings on the monument make Charminar a famous monument and a landmark of Hyderabad.
