Just over two months after the standard GNOME edition of Linux Mint 12 arrived, Linux Mint project lead developer Clement Lefebvre has announced the KDE edition of version 12 of the popular Linux Mint operating system, code-named "Lisa". Based on Ubuntu 11.10, Linux Mint 12 KDE includes version 4.7.4 of KDE as its default desktop environment;KDE SC 4.8 was released last week.

New and updated packages include version 8.0 of the Thunderbird email client, Firefox 8.0, LibreOffice 3.4.3, version 2.4.3 of the Amarok music player and organiser, and VLC 1.1.12. Like the GNOME edition, it includes DuckDuckGo as its default search engine; the move comes as part of the project's first income-raising partnership. The new version is also the project's first KDE release to be available to download as Hybrid ISO images, which can be used to create a bootable USB drive using the dd command. A tutorial for installing Linux Mint via USB is provided.

The developers note that the Moonlight plugin – the open source implementation of Silverlight for Linux – has been removed from the release because of a bug that caused Firefox to crash; the issue has been fixed in an upstream release which users can install from the project's site.

A crowd of over 1,000 people mobbed an Indonesian mall for a chance to buy a half priced BlackBerry 9790. Over 90 people passed out in the mob, and at least three people suffered broken bones.

If you thought local Black Friday deals were good, you need to go to Indonesia. A crowd of over 1,000 people formed outside an Indonesian mall on Friday for a sale on the newly released BlackBerry 9790, pictured on the left above. The phone that retails for around $520 was available at half price.

Customers had been in line since 4 pm the day before waiting for the sale to start. Rumors started spreading throughout the massive crowd that there wasn’t enough phones for everyone in line so they started to get a little rowdy. The crowd pushed through a barricade which caused at least 90 people to pass out and three people to suffer broken bones. It took 200 police officers and security guards to restore order to the mob. Three people were rushed to the hospital for treatment to their injuries.

While it might be a little surprising for us here in the U.S. but BlackBerry is by far the most popular phone maker in Indonesia. Four of the top five selling phones are made by BlackBerry. Combine the insane popularity of the device with a half off discount on a recently released device and this sort of situation is predictable.

Local police said that BlackBerry officials will be questioned for failure to provide a safe environment for the sale. The police were not informed by BlackBerry prior to the event, and say that if they were they would have been able to control the situation.

After the initial mob was dispersed phones went back on sale for a short time until ultimately the sale was shut down prematurely. There is no word as of right now if other retailers will attempt a similar promotion, but Indonesians should be able to buy the 9790 at any of their local BlackBerry retailers starting tomorrow. Ever since the MacBook Air was released, no one has really been able to match it in the thin and light category of laptops. Apple’s super-thin design, coupled with solid performance and decent battery life has seemed unbeatable so far.

New competition is about to appear though, in the form of the Ultrabooks Intel is pushing so hard to become a new category of portable machine. Combine that with Apple not catering to consumers who want a larger display, unless they switch to the thicker, heavier, more expensive MacBook Pro, and there may be a gap in the market for the competition.

Apple isn’t sitting still, though. It is now expected that updated models of the MacBook Air will arrive in the first quarter of 2012. The big surprise? A 15-inch model is being added to the line-up next to updated 11.6 and 13.3-inch machines.

Existing Apple users who want a larger display will be delighted by this news if Apple has managed to retain the very thin design and overall look of the Air. For anyone looking to buy a new laptop, the 15-inch model may be the excuse they need to choose an Apple device over the many 15-inch Windows 7 laptops already available.

Of course, Apple won’t confirm a larger MacBook Air exists until the day they officially announce it. DigiTimes has only heard that a 15-inch model is in production for testing purposes, and is meant as a direct competitor to forthcoming Ultrabooks.

With the 13-inch model currently starting at $1,299, a larger Air is going to be a very expensive laptop. The MacBook Pro 15-inch model is $1,799, so should we expect a $1,599 base price? Also, what does this mean for the MacBook Pro? Surely it requires either phasing out the 15-inch Pro, or coming up with some larger differences to keep the two lines separate e.g. make the Pro more of a power-user laptop with a significantly higher base spec.

The MacBook Air is a very desirable laptop to own, but the ultimate question will be whether consumers are willing to pay upwards of $1500 for one?

Nearly 2.5 million Muslims will officially begin the annual Islamic ritual of the Hajj on November 5, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
