The Beginning

The first step on the journey to becoming a Dj for hire is establishing your genre in music. Picking your genre will define the markets you can work in when you have your opportunity. Due to the wide variety of musical genre’s it is best to pick at least two or three (3) genre’s that you are passionate about and you have some music knowledge in. Why do you need knowledge in music? The Second Step

With the age of the internet the options to grow are much easier then it was in the 80’s, but to grow publically and have a strong following you have to get your technique down to a science. Mixing is very important as the better you are at mixing the cleaner your mix sound and that will help you keep a flow or momentum going when you perform without making your performance look like two cars crashing into each other. To get the perfect mix stay away from the “AUTO SYNC” button and “SYNC” button. These two buttons will never teach you anything. You must learn how to count bars. There are very many YouTube videos teaching you the basic mixing steps, so go have a look see and get an idea of how it all works. Some people don’t have the luxury of buying their own equipment when they start out so they try to get positions in clubs as a trainee DJ for hire and this can boon well for them as it gives them the experience you need for performance and allows you to work with senior DJ's for hire who have tons of experience.

For those of you who have a friend in the entertainment industry and can afford to buy your own set up then it is recommended that you seek out a mentor so you can further your craft in a proper way. There are many good schools as well that offer Deejaying courses and this schools can teach you the technicalities and the art of mixing but they can’t give you the real show experience and the reality of the dj life. So if you go to a dj school then you will certainly need to get into a club or do events for some real time performance experience. Being a Dj for hire is not an easy journey, while you may master the art of mixing you also have to master the art of crowd reading, technical knowhow and last but not least public relations skills, As you will be in constant contact with people from all walks of life. There are many things to learn when you go into the depth of being a Dj for hire and then being a celebrity Dj. So if the road gets hard, try, try, try and never give up. Technical knowledge is actually just as important as mixing. Having sound technical knowledge of how dj systems work gives you an edge when you need to troubleshoot during a performance. Don’t be like many deejays who claim to be deejays but don’t have knowledge. No question is ever too stupid when you are asking about how things work with your craft. If you don’t understand that make it know until you get it. Life after all is all about learning.

The Third Step

Once you have the mixing down and as much technical knowledge as possible, you have to focus on the quality of music you play. Choosing the right song is paramount because it can make you or break you. Once you have carved out a small following for yourself, try to do some nights in different bars and clubs, even if sometimes its only for taxi fare or if they can pay you a minimal token. Producing is not easy and Talents For Asia does suggest that you take a course in music production and sound engineering if you have no music background. But if you have some formal musical training then the task of remixing and producing can be a lot easier. However you must also know what software to use and how to use it well so you can better produce. Don’t be worried if no one listens to you first song or even your first fifty (50) songs. It’s all a process. There is a huge amount of competition out there and well; you have to roll with the punches. Before you release any remixes or songs, it would be advisable to do some research on what platforms are best to showcase your music. Duration Of The Journey

The duration or time it will take you to reach the heights of a celebrity dj for hire really depends on you. There is no fixed time frame and there is no short cut to stardom. You have to work hard. Some deejays take anywhere from five (5) years to ten (10) years and some get lucky and produce a hit after being in the industry for only two (2) or three (3) years. Talk about a bad weekend. Talents For Asia today admits to having CANCEL an online debut show for Dj Justine. Since Thursday we at Talents For Asia have been trying to rectify and correct sound clarity issues with streaming Live via live stream but we have not been able to correct the issues at hand. With every hope of some break through, more problems arise. It’s like software fighting software. So after three (3) days of battle with software and online platforms, we decided rather than give the adoring fans a bad display of Dj Justine’s first live dj set, we would cancel it as it was Talents For Asia’s fault anyway for not being able to resolve the various technical issues.

As such we at Talents For Asia would like to herewith publicly Apologies To Dj Justine and her family and to her many friends, piers and fans for the CANCELED show tonight. Talents For Asia accepts full responsibility and blame. This was not intended. We however will try to resolve the problem as we are currently still working on it and shall post a new show date when we are completely sure that everything is working in proper order. This entire episode is due to no fault of DJ Justine who worked tirelessly to get ready for today’s broadcast. We are very grateful for the hard work that Dj Justine put into getting ready for tonight’s show. Talents For Asia will however in a day or two have Dj Justine record what was supposed to be her mix for tonight’s show and we shall release it via Tunes For Asia.

Sometimes no matter how hard we try, things just can’t be fixed when we want them to be. With that said we are not washing our hands of any blame and to some it may be only a small online show but to Talents For Asia even the smallest show is an important show. We thank you all for your support thus far and we hope as we learn from this bump on the road, you will continue your support of Dj Justine and Talents For Asia.

Distraction is defined as “that which divides attention, or prevents concentration”; one among a few other definitions. This very word signifies a lot and, in my opinion, what hinders us from so many worthwhile things we can do to better ourselves in life. This is exactly the reason for the stereotyping we get as musicians. “Musicians will never do well in life”. If you are one, I am sure you have heard this statement from someone, your parents’ maybe, your friends, your teacher perhaps. And if you are not a musician, I am pretty sure you have the same opinion. If not then you are among the few who doesn't think so. Why is this opinion so predetermined to us musicians? And yes, this is true to some. But there are so many cases that this is not, even a little. Why should a musician be a typecast to a life of misery or inability to be well off in life?

Let me site an example, an ordinary employee receives at the very least P5, 000.00 for a month of working 8am to 5pm, while a musician when working abroad should earn about, at the very least $700 a month for working 8:30 pm to 2:00am. And let us say, if a musician is not working abroad, he or she will always have the option of getting another job in the daytime, P5, 000.00 a month for the day job and at least P500 a night for a gig. How can that even compare to an ordinary employee. A mate of mine earned in 12 days in a booking abroad what he would earn in 3 months back home.

So where does the stereotyping coming from? To be honest, it’s either the musician is too lazy or easily distracted with other things in life. Distractions are prevalent in a musician’s life. From bad vices to women to new equipment that we believe will help us sound like Eric Clapton or Billy Sheehan or whoever we are trying to imitate. There are so many distractions in a musician’s life especially when working abroad. I have seen how a humble man become too materialistic once he gets his first salary.

Some of the most common distractions as I have seen among my travels are computers, laptops, cell phone, etc.These distractions may not be exclusively coming from material things, a relationship, peaceful or otherwise, lust, hobbies, even our own personality is a distraction if not for yourself then maybe for others. I knew a very good musician before that was so dedicated with his craft that he sometimes forgets to eat just to practice and hone his skills to the level he wants to. But the moment he got hold of a brand new camera, which by the way he had to get by credit, forgot his obsession with his skills. He used to be so dedicated to his craft, but now all he does is try to get the perfect picture. He came as a musician and went home a photographer.

In fairness, there are distractions that can make us better people and maybe can get us musicians into a better standing in life. But these are so rare and not many opportunities are there. I guess what I am trying to convey here, is that the stereotyping about us musicians has been proven true so many times in the past. And we may not accept it, but we know that this is our reality. We are given the chance to earn what many may not but we sometimes get too hooked up with our distractions that we justify, however we can, what we spend for it. And when the contract is over we are left with nothing much. And the cycle continues. Sometimes, we should learn to think long and hard before we buy things we really don’t need. Sometimes we need to think if something is worth it or not. We just can’t buy something because someone else has it. We should save some if not all our earnings abroad so that when we go home we have enough tucked in not to desperately accept just any contract presented to us. This is why some bands and musicians just accept whatever contract is given them, because they got distracted in their previous bookings, and because of money problems, they believe that anywhere is better than home.

You’re nothing more than a fake, floozy and a disgrace to the magnificent status of dj’s world wide. You should only call yourself SYN BUTTON . Being a dj is about showing creativity when you mix anywhere from two to four songs together without the aid of computerized technology. Real dj’s for hire and celebrity dj’s do not use the SYN button. They mix manually. So you have to know that what your doing is only making yourself look stupid and you are shaming the many dj’s who worked hard to get where they are by manual mixing. Amanda Imani is a Malaysian celebrity who has been labeled sexy and some other person's who have commented on her pictures also say that certain images of her make her look sexy, Here is the thing, Amanda Imani, Knows that she is a shapely young woman but she has never flaunted her figure to sell her music, and she does try very hard to move away from being know as “artiste sexy” Amanda Imani. She is a trend setter for someone in her age gap and she does dress with much self respect and International standards. But still some call International Standards “Sexy”.

Why is it that you have to over objectify an artiste to sell them? Why is it that a woman’s dignity can’t be preserved and her ability be exposed. Why does society in general like to post objectifying comments? About a person’s levels of sexiness? The English language has more words then sexy and hot. We are far from perfect and we think we should actually try to be more respectful which we are doing when we post on comments or comment on images on social media networks. When it comes to young women, we should all be a lot more respectful of them especially if we are older than them. Malaysia’s entertainment industry has many issues, and the main issue is growth. The growth to becoming even a serious Asian competitor is still far behind Malaysia’s closest neighbors like Indonesia, Singapore And Thailand. The problem with Malaysia is every time it seems to step forward it actually does an about turn and take ten steps backward. This is due to their position as a moderate Islamic state. So its not the governments fault because they do try to find the balance which will take them a bit more time. So be Patient.

Malaysia has a long way to go and will take a few years more to grow its entertainment industry to the Asian standards. There are also some personalities that have gone as far as America and made it in the music business so really there are good Malaysians’ who do try to reach International heights and they are Malaysian’s who are all too happy to be famous and powerful only in Malaysia and don’t understand what the Asian-International markets are like thus to expect maturity from these types of celebrities is really very rare. Malaysian entertainment writers need to to use language correctly which is able to bring out the qualities in an artiste that does not objectify the artiste physical appearance but rather makes her talent the subject of talk.

Why would you label someone as sexy when you don’t understand the concept of how different types of clothes work in different ways on different body shapes? First step is getting your profile right, what is important in a profile is details on first your personal standing like your civil status, height, weight, passport number and validity. Then after that comes your working history. Educational qualifications in the bands for hire industry is really not that important unless you have a degree that is related to music, and that’s ok to include in your profile. As the next round of drinks came I turned to my mates and asked if they are keeping up with my stories so far. They nodded in agreement but still I thought, maybe they will never really understand till they experience it first-hand. So I guess I should wind up this part of the story for there are more important issues to be discussed.

So, we have established two out of the many personalities we may encounter during our adventures abroad. First, are each other and second, are the management and staff of the company we will be working for. The third are the everyday people, the neighbours, the cab drivers, the store attendants, so on and so forth. These are the people you meet every day. In every country the culture is different. What you suppose is acceptable behaviour in one country maybe offensive in others. And that is exactly why we should tread lightly during our stay in a new country where we have not yet determined the do’s and don’ts and we have not yet ascertained what is acceptable or not. This is very important to remember and understand for their will be consequences to any action we will do. There are places that you can even go to jail for spitting, and yet there are places that you can even pee facing the highway. There are places where you can go to the mall wearing your bikinis, but there are also places that showing skin is dangerous in public. I have been in a country that you have to do a given set of gestures first before you can even talk to a person, and I have also been in a country that screaming at another person, however old or young he or she maybe, is a norm. So the most important thing to do the moment you arrive is observe a little, then observe some more. There is no harm in holding yourself a little bit and gathering information before you introduce yourself to the people, so to speak.

Finally, we go to the last and most important personalities, in my opinion, that you will encounter abroad when you are a musician, the guests, customers, clients, fans, critics, countrymen, whatever you call them they are the same. These people are the reason why you are there in the first place. And they will be the same reason why either you will be going home after a month or after a year, with extensions and raise to boot. You notice that I included countrymen in that list, as far as I am concerned, your countrymen will not notice you the same way if you are working the same way as them. There is a certain perk when you are a musician, everyone thinks of you as a celebrity. Everyone wants a piece of you; everyone wants to be your friend, unless you have a crappy personality or if your band is not good enough. These personalities are like the vegetables in your Caesar Salad, the variety is plenty but the flavour will still depend on the dressing. Some are really very friendly, some hide under this guise to hide another intention, and some just want to hang around you because they like what you do. And this is the reason why among all the personalities that I have discussed this is the most important to know and be careful of.

I had the misfortune of trusting too much before and I did not want the same thing to happen to my new mates. The intent varies depending on the person really. Some friendly characters are exactly that, they just want to be friends with the band. Some wants to be friends for another reason, either to get to know the females in the group, some wants to do illegal business like drugs and smuggling, some just wants to destroy the group. Three female members of my former band ran away from the job to go with their new boyfriends, my girlfriend included, and the drummer, who was also my cousin, turned against me because his new pals thought I was not good for the band. He also ran away from the job to work in a factory where he earned a little bit more but got captured after a few months later and sent home. Relationships between members can easily be tarnished by outsiders who think they know better than the members themselves. But not all are villains, some help without asking for anything in return. Some invite you to their homes for weekend parties without any other intentions but to be friends with the band.

These characters will praise you and energize you in your job every time you feel bored enough singing Hotel California 3 times a night 6 days a week for 1 year. And the applause and the screams of satisfaction every time you finish a song, it’s like an orgasm of the senses. It’s like winning a small lottery every time you see people singing and dancing with you. That is what musicians live for. But we should always remember that these will be the same people who will hang you to dry after the show. Vigilance is the name of the game, but just enough not to spoil the party which is what the job is all about.

The nationality will vary from place to place of course. And not all races have the same qualities and disposition when it comes to musicians. Some people are friendlier and yet some are more critical when it comes to musicians. And it doesn’t even follow that a person with the same race as yours can be a good thing, one of my very first and worst critic when I started was a supervisor in our bar and he was the same nationality as mine. He brought out the worst in us. We were first timers back then and he criticized us blatantly, insulted us in our face and compared us to other seasoned musicians to customers, making them critiqued us more. Though in a way, but we took it as a challenge,the experience was so disgusting that when we got the chance we got back at him by observing all his illegal transactions and reported him to management. And he was fired. It was not really something we could be proud of but it was something he already knew was coming for him.

They were 2 of the founding members of this band, and we already have several years of working together. The very moment we decided to join forces we already talked about going abroad and working professionally as musicians. Being one of the seniors of the group, I shared to them the experiences I had, the places I’ve been and the people I have met. Being in this profession, the rewards are high and the experiences are rich, but if one is not careful, the pitfalls are also quite deep.

One of the most revealing realization when you are working abroad as a member of a band is the personalities. Not only are they varied but also very challenging. The first people that you really will start to know in a personal level are the same people that you went with, your band mates. Back home you had your own lives to live and each of your houses to go home to. But the very moment you step in the country you are going to be working in for the next 3 or 6 or 12 months you now have a new challenge of getting to know the people you are going to be working with. Sometimes this task can overwhelm some but can be a piece of cake for others. Maybe I will delve in the specifics of the personalities I have encountered over the years in the next few issues but for now this is a reality that each of the members must face. Some characters can easily gel with others while some take it as a monumental quest. You not only have to gel with the other members, but it is also a factor how they deal with each other.

My 5^th article so far. Some may wonder what happened to the 3^rd and 4^th, well I had it all penned down but I realized it may be inappropriate to post it this early in the game. So I asked my boss to defer it for a while. So I don’t really have a specific story to continue, I guess it would be best to start a fresh one. And where better to start than from a story which is close to heart, my job.

I am a professional musician working in another country. And again, I would like to stress that there are so many factors that make up a professional, and this does not imply in any shape or form that you are really good at what you do. It just sometimes means that you are being paid for doing something. I have been doing this for quite some time. Been a musician for over half my life and working abroad a few times. Though compared to most peoplein my field I am not what you call a “master” given the time I have spent doing it. Some can describe what I am as the “jack of all trades”. So if you were to really ask yourself, which would you rather be, a “Master” or a “Jack”?

“Jack of all trades” refers to a man skilled in various odd jobs and other small tasks according to the same website. Like the definition states, a “jack” mostly knows a lot of things but never is really good at a specific one. Of course there are some exemptions to this definition. But for this article let us just assume that there are 2 factions, the “Masters” (kings) and the “Jacks”. Of course if I were to ask you now, which would you like to be, the answer would be obvious. I for one would like to be a master of something someday, however unlikely that would be.

One prevalent factor of a “King” is his focus and dedication to his craft. He sometimes spends hours and hours honing his skills. And he has this drive to grasp as much knowledge about his craft as possible. They have this mission to imitate then surpass another master. The result is absolutely amazing. However, it is this same focus and dedication that sometimes fail the same masters in the real life. Basing on my experience, I have seen so many people too dedicated to their crafts that they forget about other more important things in their lives. Simple tasks like cooking, exercising, working a normal job, playing, and other everyday responsibilities. They become one dimensional and useless with other things. They are vigorous in their crafts but lazy in everything else.

A “Jack” however is absolutely the exact opposite. His lack of focus and dedication to a certain specific craft makes him somewhat capable but unfortunately incompetent to a certain degree. He may spend an hour at the most to a task. He gets bored and goes on to watch a movie or play a video game. He will know so much, but will not be good enough at it. But then again this is the same qualities that make him great sometimes. You can ask him to do any task and you will know he will know what to do. He has just enough focus in one thing before he gets bored and then tries something else. It’s this same virtue that gives him enough abilities to survive in life without the great qualities of a “King”.

Another observation I have gathered with a “King” is that they become so engrossed with the world they have crafted for themselves that some of them never really grow-up, they just grow old. They have this barrier around them that only another master can cross. They have this high and mighty attitude. Most “Jacks” I know are happy-go-lucky. Though this may not seem to be a general idea, but you know what I mean. So which are you? A “King” or a “Jack”?
