Four years and change since I first mentioned him, and we finally get to see Mr. Serjak, Harlowe’s resident alien! Who is dead now, because I chickened out and felt having a LIVING alien in Harlowe would be too weird. Maybe I was right about that, but I really dig drawing this guy.

It’s been a while since I was active on Tumblr, but Nic and Heck’s argument is inspired by a blog I used to follow that had fake synopses for Seinfeld plots, I wonder if they’re still going? There was a TNG one as well that was often very funny.

We get to see the Sun Dog again, and even more of the interior- it’s weird to look back and see how much I’ve grown as an artist, redrawing a location I haven’t drawn in over 3 years!

I have some more concept art to share today, more sci-fi stuff for the other project I’m working on:

Working to set a tone, establish a consistent aesthetic to tie together all the crazy disparate ideas I have floating around in my head for this universe- I plan to spend a lot of time in it!

It’s been a rough year, but it’s good to be back on track and posting again- I’ve informed the remaining family that nobody else is allowed to die, so there shouldn’t be any more delays going forwards.

So, we finally found out what happened to Amos! This, of course, leads to all sorts of new questions, which we will start to address next month, ending this arc, for now. I usually like to take a break between arcs and do one-off stories focusing on residents of Harlowe we don’t see much- is there a character you’d like to see more of? Someone you’d like to learn more about? Let me know in the comments- or even ask a question directly of a character, and maybe they’ll give you an answer!

Also, some bonus content this month- a brand new Wolfe & Newt, found here, and some more concept art for the other project I’m working on:

Finding an aesthetic for this has been a lot of fun, and I’ve been aiming for a weird mix of cassette-futurism and techno-feudalism. Plus, if you’re doing a sci-fi horror, you’ve gotta reference Alien, and I feel like the exoskeleton rather than the swing arm makes the smartgun an homage rather than an outright theft, right?

…Right?

Jen is on the trail of a mystery that I first hinted at more than 30 chapters ago. It feels insane that I’ve been doing this for so long now, and that there are still people reading this! Thank you all for following along, and I hope that you’re as excited to see where this goes as I am to take you there!

Any of you play Borderlands 4? I’m thoroughly pleased by it! It’s not perfect, but it’s almost everything I wanted it to be. I chose Harlowe for my first playthrough almost as a joke, and now nobody else measures up, lol, she’s an absolute blast!

I was a little late on delivering this promise, but at last, we finally start to unravel the mystery of why Amos is in the well, and why everyone in town thinks the Landlord killed him! It feels good to finally be getting into this, this is the first arc I planned out for Harlowe, and it leads into something really big!

On a minor tangent, I also want to take the opportunity to post a bit of fanart I made recently:

Is it weird that drawing this picture is how I learned that Dan Aykroyd has heterochromia?

And finally, is anybody else looking forward to Borderlands 4? Big fan of the series, I’ve been joking for months now that I HAVE to main Harlowe, for obvious reasons, but now that I’ve actually seen her in action, I’m definitely playing her first.

Sometimes, I finish working on a page, and I can’t help but wonder why I’m allowed to do this. I feel like someone should be stopping me. Creating a world is an awesome, terrible power, and I wield it with reckless abandon. The world we live in is falling apart, but sometimes I get to draw a guy getting vaporized by an owl, so I suppose it’s not all bad.

This brings the Vegas arc to a close, but there are going to be lasting consequences! I’ve not forgotten the question of what happened to the old Sherriff, and neither has Jen- we’ll be getting into this in more detail starting next month!

This chapter ends on an scene I’ve had in my head for almost three years now- this Vegas arc is actually one of the first arcs I ever planned out for Harlowe, and it’s fun to finally get to this scene!

The arc is longer than I thought it’d be- there’s still one chapter to go, but after that, we finally start digging into a mystery that started all the way back in chapter 3: What exactly is going on with the Well Wisher, and why is Amos in the bottom of the well?

Apologies for the lengthy delay- this year has not been great for me meeting deadlines. The good news is, there shouldn’t be any more delays! Once I got over being sick, I put my time to good use, finishing this chapter, and much of the next one, so in the worst case scenario, should anything go wrong, I’ve got a buffer! Having said that, I’ve probably jinxed it, but hell.

We’ll spend more time with Nik and Doc Ives later, as well as the fate of their patient, but for now, Jen needs a break, and the next chapter will feature some familiar faces!

Apologies for the late update, I have no excuse, I was up late playing video games and forgot to prep the post in advance.

Introducing a new character, Nik Bouras! I really like Nik, he’s a disaster. His name comes (partially) from a close friend of mine who is an RN, but I want to stress that the real person is much, much better at this sort of work/life balance thing.

Also, Nik is very fun to draw. He looks like a hobbit with anxiety.

After a long delay, we’re back! Thank you so much for your patience with this delay, I hope it was worth it- This chapter ends with something I have been hiding up my sleeve for more than two years now- Just what DID happen to Sherriff Amos?

Also, it’s nice to finally have a Sheriff, as opposed to a Sherriff. Just a note for any aspiring writers out there, if you ever decide to use an archaic spelling of a common word, so your readers will understand that your story takes place in a town cut loose from the regular flow of time, they’re just going to think you don’t know how to spell.

I also have an exciting(?) announcement! All the way back when I drew the first issue of this comic, I have wanted to own Singer’s Harlowe PD cadet cap. Well, now I do!

Which leads to the potentially exciting part of this post- I am hoping to gauge the desire for Harlowe merchandise! There’s a local shop to me that can create hats with this logo, but they would be baseball caps, not cadet caps. I MIGHT be able to do cadet caps, but they’d have to be more expensive, as I would need to provide the hats separately from another retailer to be embroidered. I need to know if there’s any interest before I spend that sort of money. And finally, I do have a small number of these embroidered patches currently available!

The patches are 2 inches across, and are reflective silver. They’re not backed, so you would need to stitch them onto the garment of your choice. Because I ordered such a small batch, I would have to sell them at around $20 CAD to make a profit. Please let me know if you’re interested!

It wouldn’t be Christmas in Harlowe without a horrifying owl-shaped abomination!

Overall, I’m really happy with the art in this chapter, but drawing rosy cheeks on everyone gets old fast. I’ve had this particular horrible Landlord encounter in my head for almost as long as Harlowe has existed, and it was wonderful fun to finally get it on paper, as bizarre as that sounds. There’s probably something wrong with me.

You can get used to anything, given enough time and space, as Jen learns while celebrating her first year in Harlowe!

My intention has always been for this comic to run in something analogous to real time- people will get old and eventually die, no Simpsons-esque 32nd Christmas as a 10 year old- and yet it’s insane to me to realize that this comic will be three years old in a couple months.

That’s the longest I’ve ever stuck with a project, so forgive me if I get a little maudlin, but my deepest thanks go out to those of you who’ve stuck with my weird little comic for so long!

A year alone can do a lot to someone, and Landry wasn’t the most stable individual to start with. Art wise, I really like page 7, the slow zoom in on the poor dude laying in the road in nothing but his skivvies, staring up into the sky.

This’ll be the last chapter with him for a bit, next month we’re back to Jen and Company in the ‘current’ era, which is a shame, I really enjoyed drawing Landry- turns out drawing a wild-eyed bearded lunatic is a lot of fun.

Work continues apace on my other project, which will be a sci-fi horror extravaganza! Spent much of the weekend drawing monster designs and trying to nail down the style for the comic. I’m not a good enough artist go go full Mignola, but I really want to play around with that sort of heavy black, high-contrast look. Monster designs are fun, but this will be MUCH more horror-oriented than Harlowe is, with an emphasis on body horror so I’m not sure about posting the design work here… so I’ve put it on a separate page in case that’s not your thing: link

Heck has some… issues with how Jen solves problems, it seems.

It sometimes seems a bit odd that Heck seems to be one of the only people in Harlowe who really cares about trying to solve the towns mysteries, but then, with 400+ years of no answers, the townsfolk are champions of going with the flow at this point.

Apologies for the short chapter, but I really needed a break after the last one, and I thought a nice little epilogue would do me some good.

Not that I spent the month resting on my laurels, I’ve been hard at work on another project, something that skews a lot harder into horror territory.

Jen likes to live on the edge, it seems… but it looks like she’s starting to take her role as the lawmaker a bit more seriously!

So, drawing rain gets old VERY fast, especially when you’re trying to keep track of what direction it’s coming in from with changing camera angles, but for the most part, I’m REALLY happy with the art in this chapter, especially that last page.

On a side note, drawing the Landlord is a ton of fun.
