I was very excited because I got to wear my new Modcloth dress. I paired it with these Betsey Johnson heels. My necklace is from Kate Spade and I have been wearing my new Ruby Woo red lipstick obsessively. Can you believe it took me this long to commit to wearing red! I have always thought I have lips like a chicken, so I tend to hide them with a light pink lippy, but slowly I have been building up to the red.

Those look exactly like the basics I was discussing all last week. So I continued to search to see if it had anything that could be worn around the house. And sure enough it did!

So lets look at the list and see what we can check off:

Wow! That's a lot of checks! The site even had a wonderful pencil skirt, but I couldn't get it to upload to Polyvore which is where I make my collages.

So can you guess where these items come from? Yes! The J. Peterman catalog! Isn't that crazy! In a million years I never would have guessed they had such wonderful retro clothing. Now, the prices are on the higher side, but almost everything is on sale. And I think it is worth it to spend money on basics you will wear year after year. So as you can see, you never know when you will run into vintage style clothing- it is just a matter of knowing the shapes you are looking for and they will appear when you least expect it.

A Picture And A Quote

Today is my last Back to Basics post! In Part 1 I discussed what constitutes a basic wardrobe and gave you dolls a simple check list. Part 2 described very simple vintage silhouettes and how to look for them when shopping in a regular (as opposed to vintage) clothing store. My favorite post, Part 3, gave suggestions on how to put together foundation items with a little color to create vintage inspired looks on a budget. So today in Part 4 I will continue helping you build your wardrobe including summer clothing, jewelry, and accessories.

Ah summer, my favorite season. This is the perfect time to wear those vintage summer frocks you have been lusting over on Etsy. I would start with one or two vintage dresses in good condition that you absolutely love. Then I would get some summer sandals like espadrilles, a new purse- maybe something in straw or wicker, and be sure to get a sun hat! No need to get wrinkles. Everything else on your basic check list should also work for summer, so you don't need to spend a lot of money in order to fill out your wardrobe. For example, if you have a simple pencil skirt, it would coordinate nicely with a 1940s peasant blouse. Capris would work as well.

Now lets talk jewelry. I find jewelry to be the most personal thing a woman can purchase. But to get you started, here is a basic list of items. And to be clear, when I say 'pearl' or 'diamond', I don't necessarily mean the real thing. I happen to like Banana Republic's faux earrings, which are linked above. I didn't add a pearl necklace to the list because I never wear mine-too stuffy, but if you love them then I say go for it! In addition, for bracelets you can always buy vintage bakelite or some other plastic bangle.

And there you have it! So now you should have a much easier time finding vintage inspired basics without spending a lot of money. Just remember:

1) Pick one color: black, grey, navy, or khaki and buy all of your basics in that color.

2) Once you have most of your basics, then you can start to add color.

3) Study the shapes of the periods you like the best so you can easily spot something in a regular store.

4) Take pictures of your garments on your smart phone so you can refer to it when out shopping.
This will keep you from buying something that doesn't go with anything in your closet.

5) Once you have your foundation garments you can expand into fun vintage dresses and other items unless you find a great basic that is also vintage (like a vintage little black dress).

6) Start with basic jewelry and then expand.

Back to basics: Part 3

By now you should have 1) cleaned out your closet except for the items you just love and are vintage or vintage inspired, 2) checked off any basics you already had off the list, 3) boned up on the basic vintage silhouettes, so now it is time for step 4) Finding the rest of your basics and adding in color!

As I mentioned in Part 2, it is fairly simple to find basic vintage or classic style clothing at all price points. So what I did was found a few black basics, and then added in a color- pink- so you can see some different items and where they came from:

In this collection we have items from Target, Modcloth, Old Navy, H & M, Kohls, and Amazon! And the grand total for everything in this collection is just over $300! Isn't that amazing!

Once you have the basics, everything else you buy should coordinate with something from the foundation of your wardrobe. For example, if you buy a vintage 1940s cotton dress, it would look adorable with the black flats and the stud earrings. If you find a 1950s beaded cardigan, it would be perfect with the dress, the skirt, and possibly the pants. As you can see, the original basic check list is a wonderful jumping off point for the rest of your wardrobe.

If you are really organized, you can take a picture of each item you own with your smart phone and then when you are out shopping, you can just scroll through your wardrobe so you will know if the top you are dying to get actually goes with any of your bottoms. That way you don't waste money on a garment you will never wear because you have nothing to go with it.

If any of you dolls are needing help with an item, either finding it or wondering if it is a basic or not, just email me at theglamoroushousewife(at)gmail(dot)com, or Facebook me.

Back To Basics: Part 2

Now that you have cleaned out your closet and you have your list of basics, it is time to go shopping! I believe retro style clothing can be found at all price points, it is only a matter of knowing the different shapes you are looking for. For example, right now really tight pants are 'in'. So if you are going to find a pair of capris, chances are they are going to be tight. Nothing wrong with that, just know it is going to be difficult to find a straight cut or boot cut capri in a 'regular' clothing store (as opposed to vintage recreation).

So what shapes are 'vintage'? I happen to like the silhouettes of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Here are some basic looks from those periods:

(here)

Don't you just love this 1940s outfit! Notice the structured shoulder, the high waist, and the wide legged pants.

(here)

Again with the 1940s. See the similar shoulder (small shoulder pads were used- NOT large ones like in the 80s), nipped in waist, and loose a-line skirts that hit below the knee.

As you can see above, it is possible to find 1940s style clothing that isn't vintage, but it is somewhat difficult because the 1940s are not really 'in' right now. But if you know the general shape, you can find this look. I suggest Modcloth as a great place to start because they specialize in a vintage/retro look at a great price point.

(here)

On to the 1950s. Yes, I know Greese was filmed in the late 70s, but when I think of the 'classic' 1950s look, you are either a 'Sandy' or a 'Rizzo'. In other words skirts were either wide and full, or a tight pencil. Personally, I wear both. I find it very easy to find the 1950s look in regular clothing stores such as Target, J.Crew, Old Navy, H & M, Kohls, etc. As a matter of fact, my favorite pencil skirt is 20 bucks at Target.

Right now it is really easy to find pencil skirts in an array of colors. Full skirts are much harder to find in the mall, but pretty easy to find on Etsy. I happen to like full skirts because they hide any booty flaws you might have while still looking very elegant.

(here)

The silhouette of the 1960s is similar to the 1950s, but not so poofy. As a matter of fact, sometimes it is hard to tell what it 1950s and what is 1960s. Personally I don't get too caught up in dates because I mix and match what I like and don't stick to period perfect clothing. Because of TV shows like Mad Men and Pan Am, it is easy to find a 1960s retro look, especially when it comes to dresses.

These are very simplistic examples of 1940s, 50s and 60s shapes. Obviously I can't go into each year and how the silhouettes change, but this should give you a basic idea on what to look for. Some other general details I look for are: peter pan collars, bows, retro floral patterns, anything pink, peasant blouses, embroidery and pin tucks.

Now that you have your list of basics and you know the general shapes you are looking for, you should have a much easier time when shopping.

Back To Basics: Part 1

Back To Basics : Part 1

There comes a time in our lives when we wake up one day and realize the life we are living isn't the one we want to be living. It can be something simple like recognizing a passion you had as a child that you have lost as an adult, and then rekindling that passion. It can be something more complicated like realizing your partner is toxic and you need to get out. But often times it manifests itself on one's physical aspects: like realizing you have gained weight and want to loose it, or figuring out your wardrobe consists of 'good' sweatpants and 'grungy' sweatpants.

(via here)

I have noticed a few bloggers have decided to tackle their wardrobes. They were inspired by another blogger who mentioned she only wears pretty things because she only owns pretty things. These bloggers realized they had a closet full of clothing that they hated. So they got rid of it! You can read about it here and here.

As someone who has been there, I thought I would add some expertise on starting a vintage inspired wardrobe. I will do my best to use inexpensive items as examples, because glamour isn't about how expensive something is, it is about finding gorgeous items and making them work for you and your body.

To start with I made a 'Glamorous Housewife Vintage Basics Checklist'. If I were to start my wardrobe from scratch, this is the list I would begin with. Unfortunately basics are often considered 'boring', but in my opinion they form the foundation to a lasting and beautiful closet.

To begin I would choose one basic color: black, grey, navy blue, or khaki/brown and then use that color to start. For example, from this list I would buy almost everything in black, because I happen to love black, with a few white items like one of the cardigans and the shirt/blouse. What I wouldn't do is get a grey pair of wide legged pants, a navy pair of capri pants, and orange pencil skirt, a purple blouse, a green sweater, and a pink jacket because it is hard to create a cohesive foundation with so many colors. You will be able to add color to your wardrobe, just not quite yet.

Now that you have the list, I would go through your closet and get rid of anything you don't love, doesn't fit, or you haven't worn in 2 years (Personally, if I haven't worn it in a year I get rid of it. But I am pretty hardcore about my closet.) Use the list to find basics you might already have, such as the jeans or a nice black purse. Then give the rest to Goodwill.

Tomorrow I will continue examining the basics. I will also discuss what to buy after you have everything on the list, (hint: color!) and when you get to start buying those wonderful vintage dresses you want so badly on Etsy. Wednesday I will help you tailor your own clothes (or what to do at a professional tailor), and Thursday I will be discussing accessories and what you need. I am very excited for this 'back to basics' week and I hope you dolls enjoy it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments, or email me at theglamoroushousewife(at)gmail(dot)com. I had a few minutes to snap some photographs while my daughter slept, so I thought I would show you my new silver cabinet from Viva Terra. I thought it was so unusual to have a wooden cabinet covered in silver! And it fits perfectly into the space. What you don't see behind it is an ugly air return cover, so it is beautiful and functional! Yay!

This is the garden circles fabric, and I also have the black English rose and the daisy chain. I adore them because they are so comfortable and classy.

Plus they have two pockets which is perfect for a little pacifier or my car keys. I also like the neckline because it doesn't show off too much skin. My hair is a faux 1940's do with a ponytail and flower. And that, dolls, is my outfit of the day!

7 Amazing Recipes

It's been a while since I have posted anything about cooking, which is weird because I have been cooking up a storm! Its just those posts take a lot of time to produce, and it throws the rhythm of my cooking off because I have to keep stopping to take a picture. But I have found some really incredible recipes, and I don't want you dolls to miss out. So here are the links to my top 7 recipes of the past few months:

Apple Pomegranate Salad

I love salads and I am always on the lookout for the new and unusual. I thought this one sounded good because of the pomegranate juice in the dressing, and I wasn't disappointed. I omitted the quinoa because I already had a quinoa dish and that meal and it was still delish.

Peppermint Fudge Brownie Jars

These were no joke. I made them a few weeks ago for a dinner party and everyone raved! They were easy to make, tasted out of control, and the best part was the adorable way of presenting it in a small mason jar. These also make great holiday gifts- maybe for valentines day?

Leek And Potato Cake

My new favorite cooking show is Extra Virgin with Debi Mazar and her hot Italian husband. Are you watching it? If not, why not? It is such a good show, and Debi definately has that vintage flair. Her hair and nails are always impeccable. Even better is the food, with the above being my favorite recipe to date. I have made this the day before and had it either warm or at room temp and it is still pretty good.

Cranberry Chess Pie

For a while I thought those fudge brownies were the best dessert ever. And then I made this cranberry chess pie and it blew those brownies out of the water! I have no words to describe the amazing taste explosion in your mouth. As you bite down you taste creamy, tangy, sweet, and crunchy all at the same time. Do not stop. Do not pass Go until you make this pie. Tonight. I am not kidding.

Apple Bundt Cake

I made this at Rosh Hashana and it was excellent. We don't eat nuts on this holiday, so I omitted them and the cake was still awesome. It would also be a great breakfast cake.

Butternut Squash And Chickpea Salad With Tahini Dressing

I made this two weeks in a row because I loved it so much. If you like tahini, you will love this salad. The first time I made it I added some leftover quinoa and it rocked the house. I made it the second time without and I think I will keep the quinoa from now on. It was the perfect addition.

Cabbage And Lime Salad With Crunchy Peanuts

This salad is easy, tasty, and beautiful to look at. Need I say more? Oh ok. The three different leaves make this a gorgeous salad to look at, and the lime gives it a kick. The peanuts are great to give it that savory sensation. My only addition was a little bit of sugar because I thought the lime was too tart. I will definitely be making this again.

So those are my last 7 great recipes. Are any of you kittens going to try any of them? If you have any suggestions of something you think I might like, or a recipe you have been wanting to try but haven't had the time, just post the link in the comments and I will try it in the next few weeks and let you know how it went.

How To Organize Your Refrigerator!

If you enjoyed yesterday's art cabinet organization, the you will love today's post! I seem to be obsessed with those green and teal plastic containers I found at Target because I am now determined to organize my entire house with them! Want to see?

Yes, that is my real fridge! Looks pretty, right? Ok, normally I don't have daffodils in my Big Chill, but I was trying to make it look nice for the photo. I have seen other fridge organization pictures on Pinterest and have been thinking about it for a while. But it wasn't until I saw those amazing plastic containers that I really followed through.

It wasn't that my fridge was unorganized, it was the fact that every time I opened it, it wasn't pretty. I spend a lot of time cooking, so having a refrigerator that made me happy was important to me. Dumb, but important. Now, every time I see those bright green containers I smile!

The actual process was pretty easy. I just organized the containers of food by type then placed them in a box. Simple! I didn't use anything in my produce bins. I think I would like to figure out a way to beautify those drawers too, but I just love vegetables so much and already think they are lovely to look at.

I did the same thing with my freezer. With that said, I will admit I have a second fridge/freezer in my garage, so a lot of the stuff from the freezer went there. This is not a good use of space, but it sure looks glamorous! I also like having the things I use every day easily accessible, and the food items I don't use as often in the other freezer.

Now that you have seen my refrigerator and freezer, I have a little story to tell you. Every year my family exchanges 'funny' presents for the holidays. This year my sister decided to get me the least glamorous thing she could find. Would you like to see it?

Cat. Butt. Magnets. I kid you not. I about died when I unwrapped my gift, but I decided to use them anyway because they make me laugh every time I see them. So while the inside of my fridge is very glamorous, the outside is decidedly NOT!

So what do you dolls think? Are you going to take the plunge and try to beautify your fridge? Or is it already gorgeous? Let me know in the comments!

The Art Cabinet

When I was growing up I fancied myself an artist. I took many art classes and could spend hours painting and drawing. As a teenager I realized I was never going to be a great artist, and I didn't want to be an art teacher, so I decided to go into costume design, which incorporated my love of fashion, film and art into one job. As I became a mother and stopped working I noticed I have stopped doing anything artistic! I consider cooking, decorating my home, and my blog to all be creative, but not necessarily artistic.

I have also noticed my younger son has really bloomed as an artist. He loves to fill up notebooks with little pen drawings. But every time I tried to get him to be more creative with his drawings, like color them in, or paint, etc, it took forever to find the art supplies and find a space where he could get messy.

So I decided to repurpose an old armoire into an art cabinet. Want to see it?

It is located in our main 'hanging-out' room so it is very accessible. As I was organizing the cabinet, I also cleared off one of our two desks located to the left of frame. My big goal is to keep this area clear so anyone wanting to be artistic or crafty has a place already set up and clean.

Here is another shot, this time from head-on. As you can see there are four shelves and two drawers. It looks like there is only one drawer, but the plain molding below the 'fancy' drawer is actually a second drawer!

As you can see, there is a place for everything! I figure if the supplies are easy to find, then maybe both my boys and myself might be more inclined to actually be creative.

As for those awesome teal and green containers, they are from Target. I couldn't find these online, but if you go right now you should be able to find them. The honeycomb box was in the homegoods section along with the brushes and scissors containers, and the 'y' patterned boxes are in the 'seasonal' section. Oh! I almost forgot: the metal things holding the paper are also from Target. They are napkin holders. The white containers with the lace tops are from Ikea in the gardening section. Just hurry because they are selling out fast.

Do any of you have a dedicated space to be creative? If so, do you actually use it, and what kinds of things do you create?

A Picture And A Quote

So I have been trying to take a daily picture and post it to my Facebook page. Many of you dolls 'liked' my page and have been seeing them there, but just in case you 'forgot' to like my page, here is a little incentive. I will still be doing an occasional outfit post here on the blog, but only when I have something new or awesome to show you. But on Facebook I will continue to try and take a snap everyday. I thought it might be fun to document my outfits for a while.

The People Have Spoken

It always surprises me when I see which posts are the most popular on The Glamorous Housewife because the posts you kittens love and the posts I love tend to be very different. I find I must put together an outfit, even if I have no intention of buying it. It is kind of like internet window shopping. This is what I created a few nights ago:

The above is pure fantasy because I didn't bother to look at any prices. But I think it could easily be recreated using far less expensive garments. For example, I adore that skirt, but I already have an orangey-red pencil skirt and it certainly wasn't as expensive as the one pictured. As for the Lanvin shoes- aren't they fabulous! If only I could wear shoes so high!

As a former costume designer, I often have a back story when I make my little fashion boards. I imagine the woman who would wear this ensemble is a CEO of an amazing company, works in her office all day, and then throws on her hat and heels, switches her purse, and runs to meet her fabulous husband at a delicious steak house. Why a steak house? I dont know. Maybe the wood panneling and dimmed lights.

Years ago I saw this dress on Dita Von Teese and became obsessed with it. You might remember I did this post about it. I tried to find something similar, but came up empty handed. Cut to the last few weeks and I have been seeing this type of fabric everywhere! So I did a little collage to show you my findings:

The dress in the middle can be preordered here. It is by Bernie Dexter, a famous pin-up model. She seems to have really caught on to this trend and there are quite a few pastoral options on her website. As for the skirt on the lower left, I found it on Etsy and immediately bought it! Yay! It is the closest I have come to finding something like the Dita dress. Now I just need to loose a few pounds so I can wear it!

I also found this excellent tutorial on Scathingly Brilliant. Maybe I will try my hand at creating my own landscape dress!

So what do you dolls think? Is this a trend you have seen as well? Is it something you like, or will you give it a pass?

Celebrate 2012!

Fabulous might be overstating it a bit, but considering all I have done today is go grocery shopping, one might think I am slightly overdressed. And guess what? I don't care! I love dressing to do errands- it helps me elevate something mundane into something fabulous.
I found this beehive tutorial on Pinterest and thought I would try it. I have never been able to really create any height when it comes to my hair, but this tutorial was excellent. It is the best up-do I have done in years! My dress is Target, my sweater is Urban Outfitters, my shoes are Miss L. Fire and my necklace is Kate Spade.

Merry Christmas!

I am jetting off to Lake Tahoe tomorrow with my family to enjoy the winter holiday in the snow. I am not a cold weather kind of girl, I much prefer Palm Springs. But with three males in my family who love to snowboard, sometimes I have to go to destinations that are not my favorite.

As I was packing I realized I don't really have any good snow clothes! I am mainly staying inside with my baby, but if we should go out and about, I don't have anything vintage or vintage inspired to wear! As I was perusing Etsy to try and remedy the situation, I found I was drawn to vintage fur jackets. Here are the ones I was looking at:

Aren't those lovely? The last one doesn't have any fur, but it was too pretty not to share. I ended up not getting any of them because I didn't want to spend the money on something I will only wear a few times, and because I ran out of time. But my question to you dolls is this: Would you wear fur and if not, does vintage fur count? I am torn because I would never buy a new fur jacket, but vintage fur seems like it could be ok due to the fact there wasn't such knowledge about the way animals were raised and killed back then. On the other hand, I don't necessarily want to promote fur as fashion. So I thought I would ask you, my dear readers, what you thought. I know it is a hot topic, so if you don't feel comfortable discussing it, then feel free to comment anonymously.

Putting It Out Into The World

I imagine the last person you would think to see on The Glamorous Housewife is Tori Spelling. But I have a confession to make: I love her.

Yes, it's true. My guilty pleasure is her new season of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. As I mentioned yesterday, I am sick so I have been sitting around the house catching up on my television and by far my favorite escapist show is Tori's. I've loved her since Beverly Hills 90210 (I've seen every single episode. True story.) and once when I worked at a candy store on the 3rd Street Promenade (a hip shopping area in Santa Monica), she came in and bought some candy. So obviously we are best friends forever.

As I was watching her show yesterday I realized that she is doing everything I dream of doing. She has a new book coming out on entertaining and I want to do an entertaining book. She has a furniture store and I've always wanted a furniture store. She has a wonderful husband and three great kids and I've always.....wait. I have that too! Check one off for me!

But the thing I have wanted for a long time, the thing I want to put out into the universe, is a secret I have been holding in my imagination for a while. I have been sitting on this dream because I am not sure how to go about getting started. But I thought maybe, if I just put it out there, then maybe that is the first step and the rest will follow. So here it is:

I want my own tv show.

Wait. That is just a whisper. Maybe I should say it louder:

I want my own tv show!

Not a reality show, just a small YouTube show that takes The Glamorous Housewife and puts it into video form. It would have the same focus as the blog: fashion, entertaining, cooking, living a glamorous life, etc but in a tv show format.

So there you have it. My big secret dream.

I am literally blushing as I type this. It is such a silly dream, and yet I want to do it. Now all I have to do is go buy a video camera and start filming, right?!

So dolls, what do you think? Should I do it? I know it seems so small, but as someone who has never desired to be on camera, I find the idea somewhat embarrassing. I keep thinking, 'maybe when I loose 10 pounds', or 'maybe when the baby is older'. But if I keep putting it off then it will never happen. So, with this post I am declaring to the world that by the end of 2012 I will have at least 3 episodes of 'The Glamorous Housewife' up on YouTube. There. That is a tangible goal that I think I can accomplish.

Now that I have told you my little dream, do any of you kittens want to share what your goal for 2012 is? It can be big, it can be small; it doesn't matter because it is your dream and therefore it is the most important thing in the world. If we all get together and support each other and our dreams then maybe 2012 will be the best year yet!
