It's Not Just About the Food...

Each Thanksgiving I have often considered answering the age-old question:

"Which is better, pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie?"

Instead of this discussion I give thanks for what is truly a better way.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. -John 13:35

I give thanks for love.

I first give thanks for the love of God that has saved me. I think of the Cross of Christ and how not only my own life, but all of history, hinges on this event.

I next give thanks for the love of my family. I am thankful for the love of my parents that has never ceased. This is despite all my failings as a son and as a citizen. I will never forget how I asked my father, sarcastically, if he was proud of me after I had dropped out of college the first time (first of many).

His response?

"I have always been proud of you."

It wrecked me.

I give thanks for my own family that God has blessed me with. I am thankful for a wife who challenges me to be a better man and a better Christian. I thank God for my amazing children.

Isaiah challenges me everyday to reevaluate how I view children. The boy is brilliant beyond years and has ironclad morals. He is a prolific creator and has the potential to do great things.

Jonathan has a sweetness I cannot fathom. He is motivated by helping people and truly mirroring Christ. His heart is such an encouragement to me.

Andrew is, in many ways, everything I want to be. He is bold, adventurous, intelligent, and confident. I often see him as a world traveler; popping in and out of our lives when he is an adult.

In heaven I have River waiting for me. I long to see this child. I often imagine hearing the laughter of a child in the streams of water that flow through the new Jerusalem.

Isabelle is a bundle of hope. Her joy and adorable nature is so different from my three boys. She has, in a sense, renewed my view of childlike faith.

I give thanks for this love I have been given. Time would fail for me to list all that causes me to give thanks.

I could list how thankful I am for my in-laws, who treat me like their own son and embody the opposite of "in-law jokes."

I could go on and on, but instead, I implore you to think of all the benefits you have in life. Think of all that God has done for his glory and your blessing.

And remember, it's not just about the food...

Amazing The Mind of a Child Is

I am constantly amazed at the intelligence of children. 

This morning during my Sunday lesson I was blown away by the depth
of questions asked by my students.

We addressed Genesis chapter three and the fall of man.

After addressing the lies and deception of the serpent I was asked,
"If God knew that Adam and Eve would sin, why did He put them in the Garden of Eden?"

I did my best to answer this high level question in our short amount of time only
to then be asked by another student this question:

"Who created God?"

Wow. Again, I did my best to answer this question, which I think
I did sufficiently in our limited time.

I stop now, sitting in the sanctuary before second service,
and I marvel at how amazing the minds if these children are.

I am so encouraged and excited about first graders asking
the same questions as doctorate level people like Richard Dawkins.

This just goes to show is that these young people are thinking.
Their minds are wrestling with deep topics.
Let us not shy away from answering these big questions!

Some Revolutionary Rumblings...Season 2!

I've always loved the sky. On eclipse day I was plagued by clouds.
Nevertheless it was a beautiful day; I could hardly complain about what was going on in the sky.

There have been some rumblings going on inside of me. These rumblings are for season 2 of Tales of the Revolution with Jason Vreeke.

The Lord has given me a great but busy summer off. We are now nearly to the end of summer.

A busy summer that has included a job change or two and the birth of my daughter.

Now that fall is coming up things are changing again.

Stay tuned for new episodes very soon!

I have been blessed with some stories from amazing people that I have in the can along with some new inspiration from God that I hope will cause you some revolutionary rumblings of your own!

No Surprises for God

I have mentioned it on other occasions, but we all live under the illusion of linear assumption. We believe today will be like yesterday and next week like last week and so on. But this is not always true; non-linearities occur.

Last year we thought our fourth pregnancy would be like the prior three. But this was not the case.

It was a non-linearity when my wife Valerie woke up with unexpected bleeding. It was a non-linearity when I left work early. It was a non-linearity when I pulled up to see Valerie and our friend Monica embracing while shedding tears and mourning the loss of our baby.

At that time we didn't know what to think or do. We were in pain. We never doubted God; but we did have questions. I cannot say these questions have all been answered, but I can say that God has demonstrated His love toward us through people who never left us. God has shown us His love through people who cried with us, and walked with us through our season of grief.

When we found out we were pregnant again you can imagine the desperate prayers and nail-biting that took place. But we had no idea that one year and one week after mourning our loss that we would be welcoming a baby girl into the world.

All along God knew what was happening. There were no surprises for Him. It was no shock to Him when Valerie and her best friend Tori prayed together that they might experience a pregnancy at the same time. Unbeknownst to these two women, God knew that not only would they be pregnant at the same time, but they would both conceive girls after having delivered three boys previously. God also knew that these baby girls would be born on the very same day; less than two hours apart.

Nothing or no one can replace the child we lost. I still think about the one we named River, who is now in heaven with Jesus. I still have questions that I do not expect to have answered this side of the grave. I do not question the Lord is in control.

I do like to take time to consider non-linearities in life. When they occur I try to pay attention. It seems as though the Lord uses these unexpected events and times in order to speak to me and teach me something I need to learn. A non-linearity to me is no surprise to God.

The Flowers Will Bloom; Even if Late

When all the trees are blooming with beautiful white blossoms all over my neighborhood, and pretty much everywhere else in North Carolina, the two trees in my front yard remain barren.

There's nothing like having the ugly trees of the neighborhood. It was told to me that my trees are a slightly different kind. They bloom a few weeks later but actually keep their beautiful blossoms for a much longer duration.

As I gaze at the blossoms on my trees I think of how followers of Christ can be sort of "late bloomers."

Those who identify with the sufferings of our Great Revolutionary, Jesus of Nazareth, will not truly "bloom" until this life is over. For all of creation is groaning in anticipation for when the children God will be revealed.

Until that time we can easily be jealous of those around us who seem to have it all in this life. It can be especially difficult to see the success of people who most would consider wicked.

Even the psalmist said that he almost lost heart; until he entered the sanctuary of God. Only then did he gain the perspective of eternity.

Sometimes we need this too.

We can grow weary of seeing all the other trees blossom while our own do not. The time will come.

Remember to enter into the sanctuary of God and talk with Him. Read His Word, The Bible, and reaffirm an eternal perspective.

The flowers will bloom; even if late.

So as I had an occasion to take some evening pictures of the blossoms on my trees, I thought about God and how He is preparing a place for me. And for some reason, that makes everything easier to handle.

Public Profession of Faith

Hello Fellow Revolutionaries,

This has been a big weekend for my family and I. My oldest son, Isaiah, made the decision to publicly profess his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth through water baptism. Thoughts of pride and humility have filled my heart in the days before and the day of my eight year-old's baptism.

I also have had some family come in from out of town.

I know what you're thinking...Jason is coming up with an excuse for not releasing an episode.

You may be right.

I have not had the time to prepare a high quality episode for your listening pleasure.

I have about two thirds of an episode produced with almost all of the writing done for the rest.

Instead of rushing to finish I will take my time to make sure this episode is on par with the programs you are accustomed to from Tales of the Revolution with Jason Vreeke.

Instead, I am going to give you a bonus from 2006 or so.

This episode features the late Pastor Chuck O'Bremski. He gives some of his life story and how he became a follower of Christ.

Weekend Wonder

For some reason mowing the lawn or even walking in my yard reminds me of Star Wars. It may seem arbitrary but I have spent many hours listening to Star Wars podcasts while mowing.

Invariably, Star Wars always gets me thinking about my oldest son Isaiah; who will be eight years-old very soon.

I remember several years back looking at cakes in the bakery section of Walmart. Isaiah's curiosity was captured by a cake-topper which featured a man in a black helmet dueling a man with a fair complexion.

The scene on the cake was that of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker dueling in Return of the Jedi.

He asked me, "Daddy, what is this?"

I gave him a little backstory of the duel and told him about the films. I asked him if he wanted to go home and watch the movies. He excitedly agreed. This marked the beginning of his love of Star Wars.

I did not spend my childhood adoring the film franchise; I first watched the films in 1997 during the theatrical release of the special edition versions of the movies. I was, at the time, a high school student.

With this being said, I did not have the same level of wonder as when Isaiah first watched the films. I was not stricken with fear when Darth Vader burst into the Tantive IV in search of the Death Star Plans. I was not frightened to the core when Darth Maul, and his demonic facial features, drove his saber through the abdomen of Qui-Gon Jinn.

I guess one of the reasons I like Star Wars is because it does, in a sense, help me to try to recapture the wonder I have lost growing older. I especially enjoy watching Isaiah and my other boys watch with wide eyes as Anakin makes the horrible turn to evil.

I find it fascinating how much of an emphasis Jesus of Nazareth puts on the nurturing of children. He said it would be better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be cast into the sea than to offend a child.

Jesus said that His Kingdom is made up of children and people of childlike faith.

Does this sound strange to you?

It should not. I have often thought of Jesus as being the patriarch we all need; the One who makes children of us all.

Don't think of Him as a person who makes us feel incapable or weak. Think of Him as One we can look to in our times of need; which is all the time.

I think of Jesus as the One who cares for me more than I care for my own children; and He cares for you as well.

Have you talked to Him lately? He was taken down a rough path while carrying a wooden cross.

His arms were stretched out and nailed to this same cross. There He died as a payment for our sins; our offenses toward God.

When the disciples looked for Him, the tomb was empty.

Jesus lives and because He lives we also shall live.

Simply call out to Him in faith.

For it is by grace we are saved, through faith. This is not of ourselves. It is a gift from God, not of works, so that nobody can boast.

Do you have this faith? It is yours if you want it.

Call out to Him.

Some Things Never Change...

When we survey the world around us, the picture does not look good.

It is impossible to say what the global tomorrow will bring.

Even in The United States, we are in a time of uncertainty.

In your own life personally, I venture to say that you are probably dealing with something that has taken you by surprise. I daresay it is very likely that you are dealing with an issue you thought you would never would see.

I know that in my own life I see, time after time, that I tend to have new problems arise before my other problems resolve.

People get sick. Careers fall apart.

We lose houses, pride, and even those we love.

We see people around us seem to be doing so much better than we. It is common for jealousy and envy arise.

I remember an ancient Jewish musician named Asaph, who said he almost lost heart when he thought of how the wicked would often prosper in this life.

He almost lost heart, until he entered the sanctuary of God...

What changed for Asaph? Did all the wicked people suddenly get their judgment?

No.

Asaph's surroundings did not change; and we need to realize that, so many times, our surroundings will not change either.

Asaph changed.

Why?

Because he came into contact with God.

A friend of mine likes to call life on earth a dress rehearsal. This especially resounds with me due to all my years in theater.

It makes sense doesn't it? This life isn't the real thing.

Our real life is in heaven. In fact, St. Paul the Apostle said Our citizenship is in heaven.

Keep in mind, this only makes sense to a person who is following after Jesus.

None of this will be relevant unless you have, as Jesus Himself put it, been born again.

This is when a person is apprehended by Jesus and experiences the second birth; the spiritual birth.

This will change you.

After you have experienced this second birth, you may still find occasion for change.

You will find the change needed when you come into contact with God.

We can do this, like Asaph, when we enter the sanctuary of God.
We can do this when we read and meditate on the Holy Scriptures, The Bible.
We can do this when we speak to God through prayer in the name of the Lord Jesus.
We can do this when we serve other people in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Some things never change.

God never changes.

Instead, contact Him, and let Him change you.

Some Things Do Change Indeed...

Hello Fellow Revolutionaries,

God has been so faithful! All people of all generations can say this in full truth.

Today is no different.

I have often asked the following question in my life, "What's wrong with this country?! Can't I walk down the street without being offered a job?"

I say that to say that I have had a recent job change. This change is within the same company. They made me an offer and I couldn't refuse it.

With this change I have had a hard time adjusting to the new hours.

I also have begun the Spring semester in my collegiate efforts.

I have found that, through these changes, I have not been able to post as many blogs.

I have, praise God, been able to release podcast episodes weekly.

I apologize that the blog posts have not been as frequent.

I also thank you for continuing to listen to the podcast.

God has been faithful in providing amazing guests that will glorify the name of the Lord!

I just conducted an interview today and I am very excited about! It will bring glory to the Real Jesus of Nazareth.

Keep listening for more Tales of the Revolution with Jason Vreeke.

But even more so, please, keep living the Revolution for the greatest Revolutionary of all...

Jesus Christ.

Last week many witnessed the words and actions of what is being

called:

The Women’s March.

It is said that over a million people, the vast majority women, gathered in Washington D.C. in order to be heard.

Coverage was widespread.

You could not escape it on social media or network media.

I got some pretty in-depth descriptions from proponents and opponents who were in attendance.

This weekend is an event dubbed The March for Life.

In similar fashion, people from all over, mostly women, are assembling in Washington D.C. in order to speak out in favor of protecting human life.

I don’t know where you fall in this issue.

It was Dr. Ravi Zacharias who said:

The ultimate test of any civilization is how we treat the most vulnerable…what we do to our children.

There are none more vulnerable the unborn.

What are we doing to these children?

As The March for Life goes on this weekend in our nation’s capitol, and there is not as much media coverage, ask yourself:

Why is that?

Why is the media lopsided on this issue?

The crowd is slated to be even larger than that of last week.

People Need Jesus

People look at Christians and determine what Jesus is like.

The sad reality is that Jesus of Nazareth has been defamed because of the failures of the church.

I know you and I are not capable, by any stretch of the imagination, to be just like Jesus.

Do I love people perfectly? NO!

Do I always put others before myself? NO!

Do you know who can be just like Jesus?

JESUS.

We need to be instrumental in arranging encounters with the Real Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus is a Man of sorrows; acquainted with grief.

Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted.

Do you remember when Jesus met you in your time of grief?

Do you remember when He healed your broken heart?

I remember when he healed my broken heart.

And it has happened more than once; and it may continue to happen.

There is no guarantee that heartache will go away.

The guarantee is that you are not alone.

If you know Jesus; introduce Him to those who do not.

If you feel alone and have never met Jesus;

It is my honor to introduce you to the Real Jesus of Nazareth.

He is the centerpiece of history.

His ideas are so revolutionary that the people killed Him.

They nailed Him to a cross and he died.

But then He rose from the dead; proving that He is who He said He is: God in human form; the Redeemer of mankind.

If you know Him, tell others about Him.

If you don’t know Him; understand that He is interested in you.

He wants a relationship with you. You should call Him on it.

And just remember; He chose the nails.

What Are You Doing this Weekend?

It's pretty common to think about the weekend---especially on a Friday.

We make plans to do things we can't do and see people we can't see during the week.

The biggest thing about the weekend is that you have time.

Time is probably our most precious commodity and treasure.

The fact is that wherever you spend your time; your heart is sure to follow.

Put another way, where your treasure is, your heart will be also.

So how will you spend your time this weekend?

Will it be spent doing household chores, running errands, or watching television?

Do you want to do something revolutionary?!

Spend some time with God this weekend!

Spend time with God in His Word; The Bible.

Spend some time with Him this weekend in prayer.

Remember, prayer is not a wish list. It is quality time characterized by an engaged with the Creator of all existence.

Spend some time with God by being with His people; the church.

The church is not a building or religious organization.

The church is a group of people who have been called out of this world system into the Kingdom of God by Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Will you spend time with Jesus this weekend? Will you learn more about Him?

Will you be His hands and feet by serving people?

I hope and pray you do.

Take time with Jesus.

He took the time to die---For You.

The Church is Doing a Poor Job...

In many of my conversations with godly Christians of late there has been a common theme.

It has been noted by numerous folks that we, the church, have been doing a pretty poor job at ministering to people in true need.

What do you mean Jason!? Our church preaches truth every week from our pulpit and our church leadership is faithful and without reproach!

I appreciate and even applaud the preaching of truth. It is necessary. Also, the leadership of a church needs to be blameless and without reproach.

But we the church are a group of broken people. May we never forget that.

I have heard testimony after testimony about people who have been in difficult situations---dire situations.

I am talking about people who's lives have been ripped about by infidelity or who's dreams are shatter due to the death of a child.

I have talked to these people who are hurting and broken.

I, myself, am often one of these hurting and broken people.

Here's where it gets sticky.

Time after time the story plays out the same: nobody from the church reached out to me.

I talked to somebody who was wronged recently---in a very devastating and life-altering way. This person did not commit sin but was wronged. The response from her local church body was this...silence.

Really?

I wish I could say this was an isolated incident. This year (it's January) I have already heard countless stories in the same vein.

Let it not be so in the Jesus Revolution...

Let us, instead, remember it was Jesus who went to the places and the people the Pharisees ignored. May we be like The Real Jesus of Nazareth who did not worry about how associating with certain people or groups might affect His social standing.

May we never forget that Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted.

Please, I implore you! I implore myself! I am as guilty as any!

Be the one who ministers to that refugee family who doesn't have a friend at all in this country.

Be the one who reaches out to the person going through a divorce---even if they are at fault!

Be the one to show the love of Christ to the post-abortive young woman. Don't condemn her!

Be the one to reach out to that alcoholic man or woman who really needs a touch from the King of Kings!

We are the Body of Christ.

May we let Him work through us.

Somebody Someday

Growing up I always wanted to be somebody someday.

When I looked at people like Elvis Presley and Jon Bon Jovi; these were options to me.

These positions are not easy to obtain; as I learned.

Sometimes we can feel like what we do is not very significant. I created a podcast episode that tackled this subject in small way called Little Life. Most of us end up leading these Little Lives.

The truth is that they are not that little at all.

I was reminded by an old friend of mine yesterday, who has achieved what many would consider to be a great level of success, that the everyday the things we do hold huge significance.

One example he brought up to me was that of fatherhood.

The majority of us become parents. To our children we are, by far, the greatest influence.

There is nobody of greater significance to a child than a parent.

Some may even argue that the father is the greatest of all influencers.

King Solomon tells us in the seventeenth chapter of The Book of Proverbs the following:

The glory of children is their father.

If we are not involved, noble, and godly parents; to whom will the children look?

Professional Athletes?

Celebrities?

The creepy guy who hangs out in the alley?

Fill in the blank.

I think we often forget how large a calling parenthood is. We hear so often of children who fall away from the faith. In fact, by some estimations anywhere from two thirds to three quarters of children raised in Christian homes leave the faith by adulthood.

I realize that if I want to be somebody someday, I need to take seriously the somebodies that God has put in my life---my children.

During prayer time recently, my three year-old wanted to pray and thank God for his Ninja Turtle.
My five year-old wanted to pray that our friend with cancer would be healed.
My seven year-old wanted to pray for the salvation of a relative.

It was beautiful to see the progression. God is working in all three of my sons. I am humbled to be a part of it.

If I wonder what kind of significance my little life can make, I look no further than the little lives I've been given.

Someday has come. I am somebody.

And so are you.

Jesus is the Solution

Not all years are created equal.

Some years we have triumph and other years tragedy.

Our family went through the loss of a child through miscarriage this past year.

Perhaps your year was filled with similar or greater heartache.

I want to encourage you.

What happened last year doesn't have to happen every year.

Our big brother, Paul the Apostle, recommended forgetting those those things which are behind and pressing forward toward goal of the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

But what does that mean? It sounds like religious jargon.

It simply means this:

#1 Let go of all that brings you down.

"Why can't I find love?"

"Why do they ignore me?"

"Will I ever kick this habit?"

"Does anybody care?"

Give it all to Jesus. Say a simple prayer, "Jesus, help me move on from this."

#2 Press forward to Jesus and His upward call.

This simply means to move toward the direction of Christ; He is the Solution.

How do I do that?

Do it in prayer.

This does not mean you have to isolate yourself and fold your hands.

I found my revolution in prayer by simply inviting Jesus into my thoughts.

He's in there. Now invite Him into your thought life and go over things with Him.

You also press forward to Jesus by meditating on His Word; The Bible.

I am not saying to buckle down and read a whole bunch of chapters a day.

Read a small portion in context and simply spend time thinking about it.

Pause throughout the day and ask the Lord to reveal Himself in the passage.

Finally, press toward Jesus and His upward call by spending time with other believers.

Did you know that, in general, people need people? It's kind of how it has been designed. Even an introvert needs the love and kindness of others. We cannot do this on our own. We may think we can; but this is simply not true. I have found the joy of being part of a small group at our church.

When we went through our miscarriage we found that our small group was instrumental in our healing. Not only did they tend to us and lend crying shoulders; but they even put together a memorial service for the loss of our child. It would have been much harder without this group. We learned, sadly, that most people do not have this kind of support. That should never be the case in God's church. Get involved in a small group.

Will you let go of what hurts you this year? Will you press forward toward Jesus and His upward call? I pray that you do.

Remember, He is the Solution!

May this year be better than the last, in Jesus' name.

Thinking on the Revolution...The Innocence and Wonder of a Child

There is a certain innocence and wonder that most children possess and most adults do not.

You remember? Don't you? When the world that you knew was bright and exciting? When Mom and Dad or big brothers and sisters were heroes who could not be defeated?

As we become adults we change. We, at some point, lose this innocence and wonder. We begin to see the world as it is; in all its hideosity.

We learn of the horrible things people people have done to one another throughout the millennia. We experience atrocities that happen to seemingly good people.

Heroes fall.

Role-models fail.

And we are let down by those we revere, and even by ourselves.

Hope seems manufactured at best. Empty promises lead to empty hearts.

I believe this innocence and wonder can be regained.

We may have lost our belief in heroes who can save the day, but there is a real Hero who is ready to save.

When Jesus comes into your life He can restore your lost innocence. You can again regain your wonder. Suddenly all the turmoil of the world can make some sense.

There truly is a struggle between good and evil. And while the darkness seems to prevail; the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

We have a hero.

He will return to the earth and set things straight.

Evil will be defeated.

Justice will come to those who are deserving.

Are you despairing?

Come to the One, Jesus, who died to make children of us all.

Christmas: Prelude to Sacrifice

Hello Revolutionaries,

This weekend will be Christmas; the time we get together and celebrate the birth of the greatest revolutionary of all---Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

I want to take this time to pause for a moment and think about how important Christmas really is.
We can get caught up in the commercialism or we can get caught up in the traditions of Christmas that are not part of the original story. Conversely we can also get caught up in pointing the finger at people who are caught up in such things.

It should be neither for us revolutionaries.

Rather, we ought to reflect on what it means that God became a man and dwelt on earth. I often think about how it is the greatest riches to rags story. Jesus lived in the heavenly realm among glory and splendor that you and I cannot grasp. The distance He had to travel from his home to earth is literally immeasurable and unfathomable.

Why would the God, who created all time, space, and matter, descend into the lowest depths of humility?

Love.

He became a human and even set aside some of His attributes (see Philippians 2). This is the mystery of godliness---that God would become a man. If that weren't enough, He even laid down this mortal life and allowed His own creation to nail Him to a cross and kill him.

This was His choice. Love was His choice. Love is sacrifice.

There was no other way for humanity to be redeemed of their sins.

Here's the revolution.

In a complete Turnaround our great Revolutionary rose from the dead. And this is why I don't particularly like to tell my children fairy tales or mythology---I want them to see the complete otherness of Jesus Christ. Kill Him? He'll just rise from the dead! There is nobody like Him.

He is the icon.

Focus on Him this Christmas and love as He loves---sacrificially. There is no better subject and no greater story.

The Secrets of Christmas Volume 2: Santa Claus/Saint Nicholas

Who is this guy? Where did he come from? The question is not as easy to answer as we would like. In fact, the legend of Santa Claus has many contributing factors. I want to just look at the aspect of how a historical figure, Saint Nicholas, became Santa Claus.

He was born in possibly 280 AD and was a devotee of Jesus Christ. He became the Bishop of Myra in what would be modern-day Turkey. He was known as being a defender of true Christianity. Some say he was even present during the Nicean Creed and was a fierce opponent of Arianism (the teaching that Jesus is a created being).

Saint Nicholas was also known as being a great gift-giver. He later became the patron saint of children, unmarried girls, and many more. This was due largely to his reputation of giving gifts to needy children and providing gold for the dowries of poor unwed girls. There is one legend that speaks of how how he threw gold down a chimney to perhaps land in socks drying on the fireplace...stockings anyone?

His death was recorded on December 6, 343 AD after being imprisoned by Roman Emperor Diocletian. After this, December 6 also became his feast day. To commemorate this man, people would get together to eat, and exchange gifts.

The legend grew as stories arose of Saint Nicholas bringing gifts for good little children on the night of December 5; wearing his red bishop robes. Bad little boys and girls were to fear him; as no gifts would be given to them. Some legends speak of him capturing the naughty children by using a sack or threatening to assault them with a rod.

In The Netherlands, the name Sint Nicolaas became contracted into Sinterklaas. Over time this contraction became relaxed until we came to the term Santa Claus.

I think that if the real Saint Nicholas saw what Christmas had become---the focus having been removed from Jesus and relocated to legends and commercialism---he would be very dismayed. This man died in prison for the cause of Christ!

So what do we do with the modern display of Christmas?

Use it to talk about Jesus!

Talk about how God became a man and was born in a manger. Talk about how that baby grew up into a Man---the greatest Man in history.Talk about how the calendar system revolves around this Man. Talk about how this Man was killed, having been nailed to a cross, and then rose from the dead. Talk about how this death and resurrection provide the only basis for which sinful humans can be reconciled to a Holy God. Make Jesus the forefront!

The Shepherds on Christmas Night

We can read of the shepherds on Christmas night in the second chapter of The Gospel According to Luke. The story records the miraculous angelic announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Think about what this night must have been like. Have you ever worked a night shift or even the dreaded overnight shift? I have worked my fair share. I remember working late nights into early mornings at the radio station. There is nothing like the quiet of those times of night. Every once in a while I would get surprised by a security guard opening the door at 3 AM.

Imagine the shock of the angelic interruption. This dark and quiet night quickly became the opposite. Consider the bright light as we are told darkness became light as the "glory of the Lord shone around them." What a stark contrast to these men who had probably been on their shepherding routine for years.

Then this quiet night became loaded with an entire multitude of angels---praising God! One angel would probably be enough for a person to just about jump out of their skin---but what about a multitude?

These shepherds, surprised to say the least, then traveled to Bethlehem.

What could top this angelic prelude? God becoming human.

The greatest miracle of all was before these shepherds; on, no doubt, the most exhilarating night of their lives.

Why is the birth of Jesus so significant?

Jesus is not only the most notable of all notables in history. Jesus is God in human flesh.

We do not have a God who cannot sympathize with us. We have God who descended and became one of us. Jesus became a man in what theologians call "The Incarnation." We cannot comprehend the immeasurable humility displayed for such an event.

God becoming human ultimately makes Him our eternal contemporary; able to sympathize with our struggles and pay the price for our sins.

Only a human could redeem humanity; this is exactly what Jesus did on the cross.

The Shepherds on Christmas Night enjoyed a front row seat to the beginning of our redemption. If Jesus did not become a man He would not be eligible to pay for our sins.

This is where the Joy of Christmas begins. Jesus came into the world; salvation is here.

I Just Bit My Lip!

A while back I posted about the faith of a mustard seed in a blog entitled, What Do I Know About Mustard Seeds?

Unfortunately I know all about biting my lip. A chiropractor once told me that my jaw is all out of whack and that's why I always bite my lip.
So today I was minding my own business, eating my lunch and
BAM!!! I bite my lip and blood starts gushing out.

I think I could feel my teeth touching together as my lip was pierced through. At that moment a word was uttered just under my breath.

I cannot say this word in front of my children.

I felt convicted about this because I know that it just shows what is inside of my heart.

There is an old proverb about women who would carry pots on their heads. As the saying goes, you can tell what is in the woman's pot by what comes out when you bump into her.

It's pretty simple isn't i?. If that pot is filled with water; water comes out when somebody bumps into her. Whatever she is carrying in her pot is what comes out when she is derailed or bumped.

In a sense we are all carrying pots on our heads. When things don't go our way our insides are revealed by what spills out.

What comes out of you when you are bumped? Is it something you are not proud to admit?

Same here. That's the point. If we're honest, none of us are proud of what we hold in our pots. We are sinful. Even the best of us, of which I am not one, hold onto selfishness, pride, and more. These things may not seem too significant; but they are if you are to deal with a holy God some day---and you are.

Each of us will some day meet the Maker. He is completely holy and is required to judge sin---even if we think this sin is small. God is a just judge who must not, because of His divine nature, overlook sin.

Here's the revolution.

You don't have to go to this inevitable meeting alone. We all have a chance to have an advocate with God the Father---even Jesus Christ the Righteous. He is interested in you and wants to have a relationship with you. You should call Him on it. If you already have this relationship; introduce Him to people who do not. This whole world is filled with people who desperately need Jesus. Be one of the facilitators to bring people to the Greatest Revolutionary of them all---Jesus Christ.

Away in a Manger Syndrome or The Little Lord Jesus

This time of year many of us sing well-known songs concerning sleigh rides and bells jingling and jangling. We also sing and hear songs concerning the birth of the Jewish Messiah---the Savior of the world. Some of theses songs are great and filled with encouraging reminders of God's love. I think of the song Away in a Manger:

Away in a manger no crib for a bed / The little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head

It seems so nice and the sound of the song is that of a lullaby. But the same thought always rolls around in my head this time of year when I hear this song. Sometimes I think we live in this song or that we hold on to this Little Lord Jesus. I feel that so many of us, myself included, when facing particularly tough times we think we have a Little Lord Jesus. I call it Away in a Manger Syndrome. This Little Lord Jesus is just a baby! How could He possible help us!?

I am glad to report that Jesus is, by no means, little. If you do a study of the Ones (John 1, Colossians 1, and Hebrews 1) you will see that Jesus is actually the Creator. He is the God in Genesis 1 who created the heavens and the earth.

In fact Isaiah told us in the 40th chapter of his book that God measures the universe with the span of his hand. In the Milky Way Galaxy alone astronomers estimate there are at least 100 billion stars. The Milky Way Galaxy is part of the Virgo Supercluster which measures at about 110 million light years across. The Virgo Super cluster is part of the Lanaikea Supercluster which measures an unthinkable 500 million light years across. And this big God cares deeply for you.

In Psalm 139 we are told that God not only cares for us but that He fashioned each of our days and wrote them in a book. The psalmist also tells us that if we were to count the number of thoughts that God has for us they would be more numerous than the sands of all the seashores. This figure has been estimated to be approximately 10 the the 25th power!

So God is big; and this "Little Lord Jesus" grew up to become the greatest man who ever walked the face of the earth. Indeed, the calendar itself revolves around Him as His birth is the actual pivot point between the common era and prior.

He became the most notable Revolutionary who, despite His immeasurable power, allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross made of wood that He designed. The people He designed and created actually drove the nails into this cross. By the way, the fact that a metal nail can be driven into wood and act as a fastener is just one of the properties that Jesus invented.

This great expression of sacrificial love is aimed squarely at you. He proved His love when he died on the cross. He proved His power when He rose from the dead. He did this for you.

This is not a Little Lord Jesus.

This is a big Lord Jesus. If He has already given His life and proven His power over death; what can stand in His way?

Just one thing.

When Jesus went to His hometown he was amazed by the lack of faith that He found. As a result of this unbelief we are told in Mark chapter 6 that He could do no mighty work there.

Does that sound strange to you? Due to lack of faith Jesus, King of the Universe, was unable to do a mighty work.

For some reason God chooses to work through our faith.

I guess it can be hard to have faith in a Little Lord Jesus. It is not difficult, however, to have faith in a huge God who created the universe and measures it with the span of His hand. That's Jesus! You can trust Him and put your faith in Him!

So this year go ahead and sing all the Christmas songs you love to sing---even Away in a Manger; but remember that Jesus is not little and that He has the power to meet you wherever you are and in whatever situation.

The Secrets of Christmas

Every year my family goes to Old Salem to experience some of the Moravian Christmas traditions presented in the annual Candle Tea. Many of these traditions go back two hundred fifty years or more. When we asked my four year-old which part was his favorite he said, in a rather hushed tone, "I like the room where they tell all the secrets of Christmas." I thought, how interesting! I think he was talking about the room where the story of Christmas is told from the time of Caesar's census to the time when the wise men and the shepherds visited the young Christ child.

What I find most interesting about his statement of the Secrets of Christmas is that there really are some secrets that many do not know. Even if you do know them, I am going to talk about some of the secrets that we do not think about much.

So I present to you The Secrets of Christmas Volume 1:

1. Jesus was probably not born on December 25th. Based on when John the Baptist was born, quite possibly in March on or around the Jewish Passover, Jesus would have been born about six months later. That would place the birth of Jesus more likely in September. This actually lines up to the story concerning the shepherds living in the fields with their flocks; an activity more associated with spring and fall. A September birth of the Messiah would make for some great poetry being that the Feast of Tabernacles would line up nearly perfectly with this timing. It is said that Jesus became flesh and tabernacled among us. We can learn a lot by studying the Messiah and the Jewish feasts.

2. There were probably more than three wise men. We lock on to the number of gifts and assume each wise man carried one. Some estimate there may have been as many as fifty of these wise men. They may have also been accompanied by a military outfit for protection. These wise men were not kings but, more accurately, King Makers. In reality this group of men probably were spiritual descendants of our friend Daniel who interpreted dreams and slept in the lion's den. These wise men, or magi, would have most likely come from east of Israel---modern day Iraq or Iran. These men likely studied the prophecies of Daniel---namely his Seventy Weeks prophecy. This prophecy, found in Daniel chapter nine, actually predicts---to the day---when Jesus would ride into Jerusalem proclaiming his right to the throne. We refer to this event as Palm Sunday. The gospels tell us the wise men knew it was getting close to the time when the King of the Jews would be born and so they journeyed to Jerusalem. When they inquired of Herod they insulted him by asking about the one born king of the Jews---as Herod had no hereditary right to the throne. Note that the wise men wanted to worship the Messiah. They knew He was God..

3. The shepherds and wise men did not cross paths. The shepherds came to see the Messiah the very night of His birth or not much after. It is possible that the wise men journeyed for about two years. Note that Joseph and Mary were no longer in the stable but in a house. Also, Herod called for all the boys who were about two years of age and younger to be killed. This was yet another failed attempt by Satan to thwart the plans of God---never a fruitful endeavor.

This list is not exhaustive but I figured it would be a good start The Secrets of Christmas.

Here's the revolution.

We should never be satisfied with assumptions. We ought to always seek the truth. Too many have passed up on Jesus because of assumptions. We assume there cannot be supernatural events or that biblical scripture has too many errors to believe. We assume Christians will not accept us or that church is filled with hypocrites. The fact is that Jesus is real---and what he offers, forgiveness of sin and so much more, is what we need. Don't let that slip away.

It's the Holiday Season

I once saw a billboard with some icons. The icons were as follows:

A Christmas Tree
A wrapped gift
A martini glass

These three icons were placed in a mathematical equation boasting that if you added them together you would have the holidays. In other words it said:

Christmas tree + Gift + Martini Glass = The Holidays

Really? Is that what the holidays are made of?! I sincerely hope nobody feels that way.

When I worked at Kwave Radio we ran a Christmas series of promos called "Home for the Holy Days." When we did I thought about how the word holiday is derived from the term holy days.

It's not that we should not give gifts or have fun during the holidays. I want my children to have the best Christmas ever. We will be enjoying all of the fun things we like to do during this season.

What I think is that we ought to pause and remember what Christmas is all about.

What is a revolution but a complete upheaval?

There is no revolution more tumultuous than when the God of the universe humbled Himself and became a lowly human. It is the greatest riches to rags story of all time. For Jesus, the Creator of the earth, to leave the glories of heaven to be born in a trough where animals eat, by definition, is revolutionary. For we are told the following:

"Without controversy, great is the mystery of Godliness: God was manifest in the flesh."

1 Timothy 3:16a (King James Version)

So this holiday season enjoy Christmas and have as much fun as you can, but also, remember Jesus. Remember all that He gave up so that you could receive greatest gift of all; namely Himself.

My Heart

Dear Revolutionaries,

I thought it would be appropriate to share my heart with you concerning this blog and podcast.
I, in many ways, consider myself a very ordinary person. I do ordinary things. For example, yesterday I was at work looking at store inventories. My wife called me because her belt came off of her minivan. Listen to episode for Episode 4 - A Day at the Beach to learn some background on this.

I had to get a tow truck but the details are not important---what is important is that my life consists of ordinary things. I go to work and I call tow truck operators.

I believe the same can be said of you.
At some point I realized that, even in my ordinary life, God does the extraordinary.

I see that this is not only the case in my life but in the life of all people. There are literally millions and billions of extraordinary things going on in the lives of ordinary people.

My heart is to get these stories out. One of the greatest weapons the enemy uses against us is isolation. The enemy of our souls desires for me and for you to feel isolated and alone. When we share our stories with one another a few things happen---and this list is not exhaustive.

1. The feeling of isolation can begin to dissipate. For some reason it eases our pain and suffering when we know we are not alone. I won't get too much into it, but earlier this year my wife and I experienced the loss of a child through miscarriage. One of the most amazing things that happened was we learned that there are countless people who have had the same experience, but they suffered alone. The Lord brought so many people around us to comfort us; and many of these people had gone through the same thing. By sharing their pain with us we all received comfort.

2. God is glorified. These stories we share, whether stores of triumph or tragedy, display the awesome power of God. A friend of mine reminded me that life is made up of peaks and valleys. The fact is that God is with us regardless. By sharing how the Lord works in our lives, in both peaks and valleys, God is given glory for his awesome strength, mercy, and love.

3. Revolutionaries are born. Or should I say "born again." So many people who are not yet believers in Christ are searching for something real. I would wager that many of these if not most of these people are uninterested in the white-washed and fabricated lives many of the so-called religious folk display But rather I believe that people are looking for something real. When you hear an account from a real person about encountering the eternal God---there is power in that!

This battle is a spiritual one---it is to win the souls of people. Tales of the Revolution exists to aid in the battle by binding us together as revolutionaries as we seek to add to our ranks.

Why Do the Nations Rage?

In the past 3,400 years the world has only seen 268 years of peace. That is only 8 percent of recorded human history. This information is based on a New York Times article from 2006.

If we look at this another way, we must also remember that just 16 years ago we exited a century dubbed the bloodiest. Indeed, the 20th century saw a five-fold increase in war deaths when looking at sheer numbers. When looking at the percentage of the world population it was a three-fold increase.

This does not include the deaths of non-war acts committed by dictators such as Mao Tse Tung, Joseph Stalin, and Pol Pot. These would account for approximately 100 million deaths; if not more.

The nations, no doubt, rage.

What I find fascinating is that an ancient Jewish text known as Psalm 2 describes this fact of the world about 3,000 years ago.

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed...
Psalm 2:1-2 (ESV)

It makes sense does it not? The majority of the deaths in the 20th century, especially those committed by dictators, have been by those in utter defiance to the True and Living God.

Here's the revolution.

About 2,000 years ago a man allowed a nation to rage against him. He allowed them to put him though mock trial after mock trial in a kangaroo court. He allowed false witnesses to conspire against him. He allowed guards to beat him---so badly he scarcely looked human. Then he carried a huge wooden cross to the top of a hill where he allowed his captors to nail him to this cross. On this cross he gave up his life---willingly.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (ESV)
We are a bloody world and we finished up the bloodiest of all centuries.
What is the answer?

The blood of Jesus. Somebody had pay for these crimes. Jesus, the greatest Revolutionary of all, was the only one who could afford the bill. He died on that cross but on the third day he rose again.

Call upon him. He loves you and he died for you.

Faithful Friends

I remember a story about a couple of guys who had a paralyzed friend. They wanted him desperately to be healed. It's found in The Gospel According to Mark and the Gospel According to Luke in chapters two and five respectively.

Talk about great friends! These guys were determined. They adjusted their schedules, they canceled appointments, and they carried their friend because he needed Jesus. They knew that was all that mattered.

Think about it. These friends decide to carry there friend, on his bed, to a house where Jesus was. The house was so full that they couldn't even open the door! So what these friends do is they actually lower their friend into the house through the roof! You may have heard of raising the roof but this was something else entirely!

After this, Jesus saw their faith and said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven." Jesus was then questioned by the Pharisees about this and how only God could forgive sins. Jesus then also made this man well. He was able to walk. We may discuss this another time.

Isn't it fascinating that Jesus saw their faith and then forgave the paralyzed man of his sins? I am not proposing that a person is forgiven of sins directly based on the faith of others. What I am proposing is that the faith of others has a huge affect on people---especially when that faith introduces somebody to Jesus.

Think about it. Through the faith of friends this paralyzed man was brought to Jesus. This paralyzed man was brought face to face with God.

Here's the revolution.

When people are brought before Jesus, results happen.

I want to be like these friends who inconvenienced themselves and got our of their comfort zones in order to bring their friend face to face with Jesus. They knew only Jesus could help him. They knew this man needed a revolution---the kind only Jesus brings.

I know that I was once that paralyzed man. I am grateful for the faithful friends who carried me to Jesus; because now my sins are forgiven.

Would you be that faithful friend today? Carry your friends to Jesus.

First I want to thank you for the successful re-launch of Tales of the Revolution with Jason Vreeke!

The podcast is something that I must do in my service in the Revolution.

After the release of Tales of the Revolution Episode 3 - Little Life, I found a few unused pieces that were left on the virtual cutting room floor. At first I thought of using them for future episodes. Then I came to the realization that I would rather keep each episode fresh. So with that being said I am releasing the first "deleted scene." Consider this a little bonus feature!

The Danger of Looking Around

We run into danger when we look around. Why is that?

I think of Luke 18 when we read of two men who came to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

The Pharisee was part of the elite ruling class. He was a religious leader. He was wealthy. He had it together. When he prayed he said, "God, I thank you that I am not like other people---robbers, evildoers, adulterers---or even like this tax collector."

We read that the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even raise his head. He beat himself on the chest and said "God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Jesus tells us that it is the tax collector who went home justified.

How easy we can run into the same trap as the Pharisee! Part of his problem was the fact that he was busy looking around---and pointing out all the people he thought were worse than he was!

It's always easy to point out people and say, "I'm not as bad as this person!"

Jesus does not accept this.

Here's the revolution.

The tax collector---who was the most reviled of all people, who earned money through a very immoral, and evil manner---he was justified. He knew that he was a sinner. He knew that his life was evil. He came humbly before God and pleaded for mercy.

This is the position we all need to take. We all are equal in sin. God gives grace the humble and resists the proud.

Don't look around. Don't compare yourself to others. You may find yourself feeling too highly of who you are. Or you may find the opposite. You may look around at all those other Christians who seem to have it more together than you.

They don't! They're struggling just like you and just like me!

Let us, instead, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus; the Author and Finisher of our faith. He endured the cross for you and for me. It doesn't matter how bad you think your sin is; Jesus finished it all on the cross. You can be forgiven. All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Prayer Is Revolutionary!

Yes, it is!
In the very act of prayer is an admission that you need help.

When the fuel pump in my truck decided to go kaput recently, I did what any man would do. I bought the parts, did a little research online, and watched a YouTube video.

After an entire day of trying I came to the realization that I, in myself, could not fix it.

So I prayed under the truck. A name came into my mind. I knew this name---Larry. He is a retired mechanic. I called him and he got my truck all fixed up in no time!

So what does my truck have to do with prayer?

Here's the revolution.

We are practically inundated with the message "You can do it!" We are told that we have in ourselves all that we need. There are self-made men and women. We, especially Americans, pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and keep on keeping on!

Did you know it is not true that we have in ourselves all that we need?
Did you know we need to reach out beyond ourselves to the One who has everything in Himself?

In Christ all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form. We are told that He is before all things and that in Him all things are held together.

Why wouldn't I ask Him for help? Who else would we ask?
I dare not give a lesson on how to pray; as I am still learning this myself!
Instead I give an appeal simply to pray.

PRAY!

Even if you don't know what to say---God understands that we don't know how to pray as we ought and the Spirit Himself makes intercession.

And it is more than asking for things. Time in prayer is time with God.

And that is time well spent. So please, spend some time today in prayer.

Humility

I had the privilege of attending a day-long conference as part of the Orange Tour. The primary focus was to help youth and children's ministers to better affect those to whom they are ministering.

One of the themes that really came forward was this: "Monday is coming."

The idea is that what happens on Sunday morning in a house of worship is basically meaningless if it does not affect change for Monday and the days following.

Today is Monday. I don't know if you found yourself in a house of worship yesterday, and I do not think I am better than you because I did.

From Isaiah 66 we were reminded yesterday, that God values humility.

The world, oftentimes, is filled with successful people who have practiced self-promotion. Confidence can easily escalate into arrogance. In many cases this is celebrated.

Let it not be that way in our Revolution.

Our leader Jesus Christ, who had every reason to be proud, lived a life of complete humility. He allowed the people He created to nail Him to a cross. This cross was made of wood that He designed!

How humble is Jesus of Nazareth? His story is the ultimate "riches to rags" story. He left the highest throne to be born in a feeding trough (a manger). He lived a life of poverty. He lived in ridicule as He was accused of being born from an unwed mother, and the list goes on. The people He came do save, who He also created, spat on him, tortured Him, left Him looking inhuman, and then murdered Him. Of course, the grave could not hold Him.

No motivational speaker of this world would counsel Him to take that course of action.

But He humbled Himself, and had the end in mind. He knew this was the only way for sinful man to be redeemed.

It is no surprise that God favors and values humility in people. Humility is the proper evaluation of who we are, and who God is. When we see humanity as sinful and see the greatness of God, humility is the normal response.

So today, Monday, let us not be too proud of ourselves. Let us model our behavior after the greatest Revolutionary of them all---and be humble!

Thanksgiving 2016

Earlier this month I was asked to give a testimony at the nursing home ministry about something for which I'm thankful.

As I began to think of all the different things I am thankful for, such as my home and my family, I realized that there are many people who do not have such things. I did not want to be insensitive to those who did not have all the blessings that I do.

I thought about God and how he is the source of all my blessings. And I considered a question. What if all of these blessings were taken away from me, would I still be thankful?

That night at the nursing home ministry I shared how I was thankful most of all for the fact that my sins have been forgiven because Jesus died on the cross. I shared how forgiveness of sin was our greatest need as human beings.

All of these considerations swirl about in my mind as I realize that I fall short when I am thankful for all my blessings. I am most thankful for the Blesser--- even Jesus Christ the Righteous.

Remember Him this Thanksgiving--- the greatest Revolutionary of them all.

Blindsided

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Mary Schmich writes:

"The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday."

The older I get the more I see the truth of this quote.

It was an idle Friday when I heard the news that our lead pastor had decided to take his own life.

I was blindsided. This sort of thing had never crossed my worried mind.

In the next few years our church began a rebuilding process that involved an interim pastor, a search committee for a new lead pastor, and a lot of self-reflection.

These few years have flown by and we have now arrived where we are today.

Last night was our church-wide Thanksgiving dinner. I would have to say it was something of a turning point. Our wounded church got together as a family. We enjoyed a meal, fellowship, and worship songs sung by our new lead pastor with the aid of an acoustic guitar. I saw real worship as I looked at the faces of those around me.

My crazy kids ran around and wreaked havoc of course. But you know what? That's what happens in a family. Kids run around; they are filled with wonder. Surprisingly, I got no stern looks from those around; but I got smiles.

I guess I was blindsided by last night. I love it. Our church is healing. We are a family again.

For that, I am thankful.

Working on an iTunes Podcast Feed

Hello fellow Revolutionaries,

In the podcast game one of the best way to increase your distribution is to get listed in the iTunes Podcast directory.

I found out my artwork was the wrong size due to iTunes regulations. A friend and fellow revolutionary helped by designing the new Tales of the Revolution artwork.

I went to submit my feed and iTunes is saying my episodes are not able to be downloaded.

I know from a good source that it you enter the feed into iTunes that you can download episodes.

I have done that with Beyond Pod as well.

Please be patient as I work out my feed so it can be listed in iTunes.

Until then you can still add the feed manually.

Listen to the first two episodes if you have not yet.

Episode 3 (Lord-willing) is coming by the end of the week!

What Do I Know About Mustard Seeds?

I was told that if I had the faith of a mustard seed I could move mountains and uproot trees.

What do I know about mustard seeds?

I was introduced to faith; this immaterial thing. Then I learned that if the amount of my faith was equal to the size of a mustard seed that I could do amazing things!

But what do I know about mustard seeds?

Nothing.

I know about French's Yellow Mustard and Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard.

I know that the lesson Jesus is teaching is a simple one. He says that it really does not take that much faith to do marvelous and wondrous things.

For years this plagued me. I heard whispers in my ear, "You cannot have faith the size of a mustard seed. It is impossible. You cannot quantify faith. Even if you could, it would not reach the size of a mustard seed. You are doomed."

I don't know if anybody else has ever felt that way, but it bothered me, literally, for years. I really felt impressed to share this today. I even had a dream about it---the last dream before I woke up this morning. I never thought I could have enough faith.

This is simply untrue. It is a lie from the enemy. No revolution that is worth its salt is immune to hostile jamming. We are in a war; and it is easy to forget that. Our enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy.

He wants you to think your faith can never be enough.

Here's the good news.

It does not matter the size of your faith. What matters is the size of your object of faith.

That's what Jesus was talking about. The mustard seed, those in Israel knew, was synonymous with something small. Your small faith is fine. Just make sure your faith is in the Almighty God.

Do not be discouraged today, oh you of little faith. Place your tiny faith in the immeasurable God; He has dealt to each of us a measure of faith. Your faith is enough because God is enough.

Friday, I'm in love!!!

I don't care if Monday's blue, Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too. Thursday? I don't care about you!

It's Friday!! I'm in love!

These popular lyrics will be familiar to many. It appears that the cure for the week is the weekend; and Friday leads us to the cure.

For lots of people Friday beckons as the end of a workweek. It is the signal that exciting times are ahead! Time for birthday parties, golfing, fishing, cycling, dirt biking, or just binge-watching your favorite shows on Netflix or Hulu.

But suppose going into the weekend you knew you were going to die. Suppose it was such a certainty that it caused great distress---the kind that causes you to sweat drops of blood from your head.

That's our great Revolutionary leader. He was nailed to a cross, quite possibly, on a Friday.

I have been accused of talking too much about death. But the fact is that our Revolution suffers more death than you can imagine.

2014 marked the deadliest year for those who name the name of Jesus Christ.
It was surpassed by 2015.

Not a good trend.

But here's the good news. Here's the reason to celebrate. When our great Revolutionary, Jesus of Nazareth, died on the cross...He didn't stay in His tomb. When Mary went to the tomb she was asked by an angel, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" It was sort of a cryptic way of telling Mary that Jesus was alive.

What can you say about a man who is so revolutionary that He turns even death around? You can say He's the greatest Revolutionary of them all...but I hope you say that He is Lord.

So it's Friday! It's a time to celebrate and get ready for the weekend; unless you work in retail like I did for almost 20 years.

But this weekend enjoy the blessings you have, Ppay for the ones who do not have such blessings, and give all the glory to the Revolutionary of them all---Jesus Christ.

The Greatest Revolutionary of Them All

When we think of revolutionaries we often think of political heroes and activists like Paul Revere or those who dumped tea into the Boston Harbor.

Some may consider moral revolutionaries like Mother Teresa; who basically spent her entire life putting others before herself.

When I think of the "Greatest Revolutionary of Them All" I think of somebody who is not simply a political or moral revolutionary. He is far more.

He did not simply come to create an upheaval in the political realm. He also did not simply come in the name of morality or behavior modification.

He did not come to make bad people good.

He came to make dead people live.

He came to Earth and allowed Himself to die. On the third day He rose from the dead. He, essentially, defeated death.

He says, "Follow Me."

"Because I live, you also shall live."

He is Jesus of Nazareth, the Greatest Revolutionary of Them All---Revolutionary of Revolutionaries.

Your Own Personal Renaissance

A friend of mine went to a Renaissance festival over the weekend. He began showing me pictures of the different displays and costumes. What I found fascinating was the fact that most of the costumes and displays were Star Wars themed!

It got me to thinking about the Renaissance. The term Renaissance is derived from the French word for rebirth. Many of us think of the period of the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries where there was a massive rebirth in the areas of culture, arts, and science. It was Western civilization's answer to the Dark Ages. If not for the Renaissance our culture would not be where it is today.

On a personal level, many of us come to a place in life where we feel that a rebirth or renaissance is needed. We pause to take a look at where we are. Is this where I thought I would end up? We begin to evaluate ourselves and ask questions. What is the meaning of all this?

We often begin to look for answers---generally in all the wrong places. We seek fulfillment in money, relationships, pleasure, possessions, accomplishments and the list goes on. For many it just gets worse as these things in themselves to not bring answers, satisfaction, or meaning.

G.K Chesterton said, "Meaninglessness does not come from being weary of pain. Meaningless comes from being weary of pleasure."

In our culture pleasure seeking is at the forefront. We seek numerous types of pleasure at every turn. We want to watch the best movies, drink the best coffee, eat the most delicious foods, read the best books, and so on. Pleasure is a good thing; but it does not bring what we are looking for.

Where does it come from? Where do we find what we are looking for? We need a renaissance. We need a rebirth. I am not talking about reinventing yourself like Madonna (so what if I'm a fan!?) has done each decade! I am talking about a change from the inside out.

Our problem is primarily internal. This means the solution is likewise internal.

When Jesus of Nazareth came to this earth He came to deal with this. He said He came that we may have life---and have it more abundantly. This is a fullness of life that most people never enjoy. Jesus also said that unless a person is born again the Kingdom of God cannot be seen. That's your rebirth your renaissance!

If you have come to this place in life where you need a rebirth seek after Jesus of Nazareth. You will find that He not only gives you the answers you need but that He Himself is The Answer.

It's a Monday a Monday a Monday...

We usually grind our way through the week to get to the weekend---even Revolutionaries!

Is that what we are doing? Are we living for the weekend? The great theologian Michael Scott said that we should be living for the week!

But seriously, we often work hard during the week and look forward to something fun and/or relaxing on the weekend. It is fun to take weekends off.

I, unfortunately, have spent most of my adult life working in retail. If you work in retail you know that the weekend does not have the same impact for you. I am grateful for my time in retail but I am also grateful to be out!

The problem with taking the weekend off is facing Monday. When Monday rears its ugly head it means we are in for another grind for the next five days. Often our "weekend off" leaves us even more tired and in need of relaxation! That's why you won't find me rock climbing on my weekends off. :) I am usually exhausted after a weekend of running around with my kids at home, grocery store, or the church. These kind of things make Monday even harder.

Nothing is wrong about wanting to take the weekend off. It is purely natural! Even the greatest Revolutionary of them all, Jesus Christ took a weekend off! He had a tough week---tougher than mine and tougher than yours. He was arrested, beaten, and nailed to a heavy, wooden, splinter-ridden cross that He carried Himself up a hill. So then in His most vulnerable moment, all His friends ditched him. He died there on that cross and they put him into a tomb.

Rough weekend eh? No rock climbing for Him either. Instead, there was some rock rolling. Not rock and roll, but the large stone that sealed the tomb was rolled away on Sunday morning. To the surprise of those involved, Jesus, our model Revolutionary, was gone.

He would show up in a big way on that Sunday. He would astonishingly be alive and well after his horrific weekend ordeal. What a Sunday. Their Friend and leader died but then came back from the grave. Now that's the kind of weekend that can lead into a great Monday!

We are told that Jesus stuck around for many days later preparing His followers for their mission---a mission that is still going on to this day.

So on this Monday don't fret about five days of work ahead. Rejoice and celebrate the weekend that the great Revolutionary, Jesus Christ, experienced death and rose again so that you could have life.

Because He lives, we also shall live.

My Double Brother

If you have heard Episode one of Tales of the Revolution then you have heard my brother James. Growing up we always called him "JR." I think that had to do with him being junior to my dad who is also named James. Perhaps our family saw the "Jr." at the end of his name and said the letters J - R.

No matter. I grew up calling him JR and I still do. In my phone he is listed as simply JR.

Today is his birthday. He is a couple years older than me. But what I thought about yesterday and find fascinating is that he is both my older and younger brother. In fact, he's my Double Brother.

Am I crazy? Perhaps...but that's irrelevant to this post.

JR and I are both brothers in the flesh and brothers in Christ. We are Double Brothers. I had the privilege of being instrumental in his journey toward Jesus. While he was incarcerated I sent him a Bible and some other Christian titles; much to his chagrin at the time. For a more complete version of the story check out Episode 1 - Turnaround. To make a long story short he became a Christian and was born again a couple of years after me. So in a sense he is my older and younger brother.

I have really enjoyed seeing how the Lord has changed and used his life. Somebody looking from the outside in may fail to see the correlation between his prior life and his current.

From the inside we see what is present in all our lives with Christ...Psalm 40:2

"He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."
