I like to keep up with gaming news but I dont remember seeing any annoucements in the last couple of weeks about this.
Its such a shame. Being a big pirate fan and a player of Legends of the High Seas, this was my favouite part of Games Workshop. Trafalgar was next on my list but I guess thats not going to happen now.

The Plan Hasn't ...... well ....... Gone to Plan!

Over these 2 weeks I'm running the business I usually just manage.
In between that I hoped to have some great posts on here.

But as the title says, things haven't exactly gone to plan.
My job has taken up alot more time than I though so for a while, ToaTS will be abit quiet.

I will try and get some interesting posts up but cant promise much over the next week or so.

Apologies to all my regular readers but that 'Real Life' thing just gets in the way sometimes.

All should be good again by the end of the month though.

It’s time to polish your gun barrels and prep your armies – the UK Games Expo is back for its sixth year running– and it looks like it’s going to be bigger and better than ever!

If you’re looking to escape the humdrum of tax returns and car warranties and you have a weekend to spare, then head on over to The Clarendon Suites and the Menzies Strathallan Hotel for one of the biggest events of the UK Gaming calendar

“One of the great things about the expo is how large and small companies can both present their efforts to the gaming public” - Rhythmic Circus

There are a number of exciting events as well as the opportunity to showcase your skills on the battlefield in open games and tournaments – So grab your Expo ticket, plan your strategies and get practicing. With the announcement of Warhammer 40,000 6^th Edition, this could be your last big tournament under the old ruleset – so let’s make it a right royal send off!

Of course, it’s not just wargames and miniatures at the UK Games Expo – This event hosts all kinds of games, from board games and RPGs to card games and family games. There really is something for everyone, so it’s well worth dragging along a friend or two.

So what can you expect from the UK Games Expo this year? Here’s a quick look at the timetable, so you know exactly what not to miss.

Friday 25^th May

The Expo kicks off in the Menzies Strathallan Hotel with an open gaming day – a chance to play your old favourites or try out something new. There will be a number of open gaming rooms and roleplaying sessions to whet your appetite… and prepare you for the main events!

(Note: Friday is a Games Only day and the trade stalls will not be open)

Saturday 26^th and Sunday 27^th May

After a day of casual gaming, the main Expo begins. Over the past few years, the UK Games Expo has seen the launch of many an established game – including the UK launch of 4^th Edition D&D. From Saturday morning, the Trade Show will be open, so get on over to The Clarendon Suites to pick up some new miniatures and find out all about the latest releases.

But that’s not all.

With a schedule of over 100 individual RPG games, in 8 sessions, over 3 days, there’s a massive amount of gaming going on – way too much to detail here – so check out the full schedule at their website.

Most notably, there’s a 2 day War-machines Hordes UK Masters tournament as well as a Warhammer 40k event on Sunday. And if you fancy something a bit different, Steve Jackson Games’ incredible live action Living Munchkin will be running at hourly intervals. Definitely worth checking out.

And if you happen to be a regular GM, they’re still looking for volunteers to keep everything running – you can apply online here.

Don’t Miss…

Bring and Buy – Games Gazette are once again providing a bring and buy stall. Just turn up with your old games and miniatures, fill out a booking form, set your price and leave the items on sale. A great way to cash in those old armies that you rarely play.

Author Readings – Nick Marsh and Sarah Newton (as well as a number of other Sci-fi and Fantasy authors) will be reading from their latest novels over the course of the weekend. Think you’ve got a great idea for a book? Come along to the ‘Getting Published’ seminar to find out just how to go about it.

Expo Awards – Voted by the Expo visitors, the Expo Awards are given to the best games and games publishers around. With a number of categories including Best New Board Game, Best RPG and Best Miniatures Range, don’t miss the awards announcement on Sunday 27^th May.

I AM THE LAW! Judge Dredd First Impressions

A couple of days ago PJ from Shades of Chaos and myself tried out the Judge Dredd minis game from Mongoose Publishing.

After reading the basic rules, which are really easy to pick up, and a couple of the advanced rules we decided to try out the intro scenario in the book called 'The Barko Brothers' (All in the FREE PDF)
PJ started with 1 Judge and I had 4 Punks. Although I used my apes as a stand in.
We tried to copy the scenery as best as we could.

The game play is very simple.
In each turn you activate each model separately. They then have 2 actions. You can Move, Move and Attack, Shoot and use a models of weapons Special action. They can be mixed any way you want. Including using the same ones twice.
As my Punks advanced across the board, the Judge managed to gun the down as soon as they appeared.

PJ then suggested we try again with the Punks playing abit more defensively.
When an enemy first appears in front of a Judge, there is a great little rule. The Judge HAS to tell the model they are under arrest by using a Special action before they can attack. This is unless the enemy has attacked them to start with.

When a criminal is told to surrender you roll a Will check. Each player rolls a D10 and adds their Will stat. The highest wins. If it s the Judge, the criminal is removed from the board but not killed.
If the criminal wins then they don't have to take another one of these checks for the rest of the game and can act normally.

This second game ended with the Punks taking down the Judge in a deadly firefight down a narrow alley.
A shooting attack is very similar to the Will check D10 + Shooting stat v D10 + Agility stat. Any shots that have rolled higher than the defenders Agility total cause damage.
It did take 3 of them to finish him off though!

We then decided to try out a full on game. Judges v Apes. The book says you start with 350pts but to make things a little simpler we went for 375 to fit in rounded models without too much equipment.

After the first couple of turns, most models were in decent positions to attack.

The apes actually managed to take down a Judge again. Massed firepower again.
They didn't do too well after that. The Gorilla Gangster and Sniper Orangutan were arrested and a Chimp was killed.

Both the Judges and the Apes then closed in on each other.

At this point I decided the Gorilla in a dress should charge in and we could try out the Melee attacks.
The rolls are basically the same as the other in the game. Each players rolls an amount of D10s in their profiles and adds their Melee stat. The winner is the highest and each high dice causes damage.

The Gorilla went full boar but seeing I hadn't armed him/her with a melee weapon I had a minus to my rolls. Allowing the Judge to take advantage and take the great beast down.
After that, the final Chimp decided it was a good idea to run and fight another day.

The final gangs looked like this

1 Judge and 1 Rookie still standing. 1 Judge dead.

Orangutan and Gorilla arrested, Gorilla and Chimp killed and last Chimp ran!

Overall I think that Judge Dredd is a great game.
The rules are very easy to pick up. By the 3rd game we were only looking at the , FREE PDF, rules for the stats. It has captured a great Dredd feel as well. Looking forward to out next games and trying out some other gangs and weapon combos. (Including melee weapons this time)

We are going to try out the campaign system next time as well. Had a read through and it seems as easy to pick up as the main rules but lets you add alot more to your gangs including additional members, weapons and skills as the survivors advance.

I would highly recommend checking this game out. Its already ranked up there in my top 6 games after only 1 night!

Over the next 2 weeks I will also be taking a closer look at the model range. Starting with the box sets for Judges, Robots and Punks.

Judge Dredd by Mongoose Publishing. A new minis game for ToaTS?

Last weekend at the Legionary con I picked up some ape minis for my Pulp City ARC team.
Then I started to look over the other minis on the Mongoose Publishing stand.
All sorts of weird and wonderful things inc Judge Dredd himself! Great sculpts as well.
I was never really into Dredd when I was younger, but for some reason these minis really grabbed my interest.

A couple of the other members of our gaming club also picked up some of the minis and then PJ from Shades of Chaos told me about the free rulebook for the Judge Dredd game. Found >>HERE<<
Had to download that one!

After a good read through, we decided to give it a try at our local club tomorrow night. I will report back on how that goes.
The rules seem quick and easy but also a lot of fun. Plus there is a very nice campaign system which is always a draw for me.

How about a look at the sort of things included in the range? (click any pics to view larger)
First of all there is Dredd and the other Judges. Including some in HUGE armour.

And then there is the well know Angel Gang with the awesome Mean Machine!

The Ape Gang that I have started with. How can you say no to a gorilla with a shotgun in a dress?

Other playable gangs and citizens of Mega City One range from Sky Surfers to Lone Vigilante Super Heros and stampeding Fatties to Renegade Robots

There are many others that live in the city or outside of the walls. Mutants, criminals in Bat suits, Zombie necromancers and the Klegg

As I said, I started with the apes. But...........
I decided to pick up another couple of minis giving me the choice to use Super Heros or Zombies instead.
The Sky Surfers, Judge and Robots are calling to me as well.

Legionary 2012 is over! - Reports and Demos

Hi again readers,
After a busy few days I'm back on the blog.

Legionary is over again for another year. But it was a great day!
I know I said I was going to give a full report, but our demo table had people around for most of the day and I didn't really get to see very much of the rest of the show.

Lets start off with a couple of shots of the hall it was held in.

Compared to Legionary 2011 I think there were a lot more traders, games and even larger tournaments in the middle.

And what did we put on? (As if you didn't know already) Pulp City!
Some shots of our boards. With new and improved 'Comic Noises' and Steve's lovely pink tape measure!

I had been painting like mad for the last few days to get a fair few Supremes up to demo standard. (Although my painting is very basic at the moment)
These were set out ready for players to pick 5 Levels and try them out.

On the other side of the table was a selection of painted and non painted Supremes to show off the minis in the range.

There was even a sneaky bit of advertising for Fenris Games Bases and Sarissa Precision Buildings

As I mentioned above, we were quite busy throughout the day. LOTS of interest in the game and even 3 Bookings for demo days/nights at other gaming clubs. (More on that soon)
The guys from TAGS seemed to enjoy themselves.

So did a couple of young lads that tried as many different combinations of Supremes as they could until they had to leave.

Steve and myself did find half an hour to have a quick game between ourselves though.
Very close Lvl5 game where I only just pulled ahead with Loup Garou being the only survivor.

All in all the demo table was a great success. The show itself seemed to be a great success as well but as I mentioned, I didn't get to see much of it. Had fun though.

At event like these, no matter what your doing, you still need to find time to fit in a little bit of shopping. Whats a gaming show without new shineys?
I found a lovely range of models at the Mongoose Publishing stand from their Judge Dredd game.

The first box to catch my eye was the Ape Gang. They will fit perfectly as ARC BOOM Minions in Pulp City. Couldn't resist picking them up.

How can you say no to a Gorilla with a pin strip suit, cigar and Tommy gun and a Gorilla with a shotgun in a dress?

Looking at the rest of their minis there are some stunning pieces. Several that will work in Pulp that I will be picking up in the future.
A couple of the other from the club also picked up some of the Judge Dredd minis and then when I got home I downloaded the free PDF rules. >HERE<
Will Judge Dredd be a game game for ToaTS? (Its looking that way. I want 4 other gangs already and most minis from JD and PC can be used in both games)

Another couple of goodies I picked up were from Warmills Street Wars Range. A stunning rage of laser cut scenery.
It was a pair of small Warp Gates but I'm afraid I don't have a picture of those yet as they were a pre-release for the show.

As many of you know, my amazing and wonderful wife commissioned an amazing and wonderful present from the amazing and wonderful Pulp City team for my birthday.
My very own Hendybadger!
This included the artwork (above), rules card and mini (below)

Since then, many people have asked if the Hendybadger will ever be for sale, or if there was any way to get a copy for themselves.

9 casts were made of this minis. 6 for the creators (Col, Maciej, Leon, Devon, Melvin and Jarek), 2 for myself and 1 left! That makes it currently the rarest (not official) Pulp City Supreme there is.

I want to give my loyal readers and followers a chance to own the last one.

As the title says, I have been on a bit of a building binge recently.
Lots of Supremes and Monsters for Pulp City
Monster (above) are from a range of places including Heroclix. Still 6 more (at least) to add to the collection yet. I LOVE big minis!

All based on Post Apoc toppers from Fenris Games

A little conversion. I wanted Silveragers robo arms under his own instead of over to make him look a little different. Doc Ock and Iron spider have both been mentioned as colour schemes.

Another little addition is the extra branches on Father Oak. Gives him more of a 'living tree' look

Not much more to say about them to be honest. Just a quick update on what I have been doing.

ToaTS First Ever Salute!

So this year was my first ever visit to Salute. And I Loved it!
I know the ole blog network has been flooded with reports over the last week so Im not going to go into too much depth, just cover the things I found and liked!

Apart from getting stuck on the M25 in rush hour, it wasn't too bad a journey from the far South West.
We settled down Friday night and headed off to the ExCel early Sat morning.

Just before the doors opened we met up with afew of my fellow bloggers and Pulp City players for the first time. Great lot!
Then it was time to go in. Luckily we were hovering in just the right place and jumped onto the back of the first cue!
We each had advance ticket goody bags aswell. When my wife opened hers, she had a golden ticket for a free KR Multicase backpack! Yay!

This is what we found as we went in.

Wow! Amazing! In Heaven!
Never seen anything quite like that before and didn't know where to start first!
Well, I did. Pulp City. Being a huge fan of the game and chatting to the creators on a regular basis I HAD to go and finally meet them.

Karol on the left and Maciej on the right. A great pair of blokes that seemed mobbed with customers for most of the day. That's great news for the game!
They also had a couple of new models on display. The L3 Green Emperor of the Jade Cult and some new underground dwelling Grimm.

Maciej also had one of his new Reaver Lords on show. His own personal side project of large fantasy minis.

We did go back to the Pulp City stand afew times during the day for my little Super Hero fix.
The fix included seeing lots of pics of new models that haven't been shown yet!

With that covered it was time to feed my Pirate obsession!
That started with a visit to Black Scorpion to pick up lots of their new releases.

My wife then spotted a couple of VERY nice boards.
Cutlass by Black Scorpion but run by the Redditch Wargaming Society and Simon the pirate!

The next piratey find was Freebooters Fate.

Great looking boards and a STUNNING line of minis.
I wanted to pick some up but with no interest for the game in the area at the moment I couldnt really justify spending out on it.

One of the display boards also caught my eye. The battle for Coruna.
An amazing table and imo it was the best in the entire show.

With the pirate in my happy, it was time to go and see what else we could find.
The GCN (Gaming Club Network) had a stand there and after a chat, our local club is going to re join.

A stunning range of minis we found were BaneLegions. A range of highly detailed resin heroes and monsters for you fantasy games.

Another range that really stood out a mile was Dropzone Commander by Hawk Wargames
All of the minis and scenery was wonderful. Cant wait to see how well this game takes off.

Talking of ranges that stood out, there was 1 other for me.
The Discworld Minis from Micro Art Studio. Amazing sculpts and I think they have really captured the characters perfectly.

While we strolled around the show we ran into afew people I have spoken to online over the last few years.
Including lots of Pulp City players and some of the Privateer Press team from when I was a Press Ganger.

We stopped at one point to have a chat with Warren from Beasts of War who wanted a picture with James as a mini pirate.

Then we bumped into Ian from Fenris Games who has supplied ALL of my Pulp City and Mailfaux bases as well as several scenery bits.
I highly recommend checking out his range of goodies.

Whats a selection of people pics without a Storm Trooper though?

Towards the end of the day we headed over to see the guys at Sarissa Precision to see what new goodies they had. As well as lots of new Wild West additions, Steve told me there will be more for the CityBlock range in the near future. (Which will be on here as soon as I can get hold of some)

We didn't realise how big and manic this show was going to be. So a combination of lots of chatting and a poorly little boy meant we couldn't get to all the stands we wanted to.
Apologies to Ainsty Castings and Heresy Miniatures. We just ran out of time.

All in all it was a great day and an awesome experience. We are already planning next years trip. Within an hour of being there my wife said 'Got to come here again!'. The joys of a gamer wife! Yay!

To finish off this (not really a) report, a pic of my goodies from the day. Including cannons from Britannia Minis and an order for some new Battlefoam Trays that arrived at out house the day after we did!

If you haven't been to Salute before, you should plan for 2013. You wont regret it!

Warhammer Joey - You NEED to check out this girls vids!

A couple of weeks ago we went to the Giants Lair in Plymouth (where I am running a Pulp City demo Night tonight if you fancy popping by)
While outside, my wife and I got chatting to a girl who had just started playing WHFB and was visiting the Lair for the first time. Really nice girl who seemed to be enjoying herself.

Last night I was at out local gaming club (North Cornwall Beasts and Bionics) and a friend was joking around said 'If your going to Giants Lair tomorrow night, get me Warhammer Joeys autograph'
I had no idea who that was until he explained.

'Warhammer' Joey Berry was the girl we were chatting to. And a while ago she started playing WHFB and posting videos on Youtube about here experiences.
Came home and checked out her page and I have to say, her videos are very entertaining and informative at the same time.
To me she comes across as a slightly less obscure Noel Fielding!

I highly recommend checking her page out and taking the time to watch a couple of her videos. You wont regret it.
