Random things I am grateful for ....

:: a friend liking a photo I shared to Pinterest. which prompted me to look through the other ones from that trip to Grand Canyon a few years ago. and I realized YET again how very lucky I am. and how very incredible my husband is .

:: my youngest daughter astounding me with her maturity, composure and grace as she was confirmed in our faith .

:: family gatherings . large and small, formal or not so much. the absolute gift of them every.single.time.

:: a last minute getaway to downtown Toronto. just me and that incredible husband . a love that endures and grows and understands.

:: used bookstores

:: clear and sunny spring like days in winter . for walking and walking and walking.

:: red wine

:: the hotel fitness centre

:: grace . for unanswered emails and unread blog posts and still to come replies to comments on mine.

:: for a daughter who lit up every nook and cranny of the house and our hearts during her too short reading week visit

:: for a son healthy enough to travel to visit his sister and friends on his

:: moments of insight and clarity and wisdom . a little by little journey to peace of mind and heart.

A child of mine stringing lights . A long morning's labour ; sequins across a kitchen table . Trays of joy to give away. This is the melancholy of tables sometimes. Dawn letting go into the day. I think of peonies all flamboyant , lush. Evanescent. Petals melting , relinquishing. No vainglory here. Love from the kitchen like gold that stays.

A Day of Those Days ( our son in the hospital )

it wasn't so much a forsaking or betrayal
just a drift into the current
all that rain
a river
a going under
we begged the pain to ease and let you sleep
we didn't know where to touch you
and had to let go
don our coats
like shrouds
step lifeless through the doorway

it was soundless
just a flow
we avoided cars , nurses
the expanse between us
subjects

gripped what we saved each hour
by hour
to our chests
breathing
above the liquid ash
the journey
shoreless

you drank too much coffee
I let mine grow cold
we slumped

sediment

the table bearing us
our thoughts clay
homesteading in the wash of a river
breeding in the abundance
a house upon a rock

Tables are our life together. Fellowship. Becoming more fully human. It is in the gathering, serving, the

sacred presence of something past and present and future that we are all bound to one another .

One.

Tables are the places of struggles and triumphs, blessings and joy, shared heartaches, and GRACE.

They are the wells and the rafts and the places for creating, study , solitude and song and LIFE.

Come to this table then , perhaps? A community on Thursdays of BEING. Elizabeth and Amber are breathtaking examples that I read yesterday while trying to talk myself out of doing this :). Thank you for brilliance and art that always transcends. Thank you for reminding me how I love and need to live communion.

Thank you for sharing something that is yours. To become ours.

why I run

I run because I realized I can. Because I was a mother of five children turning 40 and walking wasn't getting me away from it all fast enough. Soon the post to post became kilometres and I ran because that felt like power.

I found in a best friend neighbour a running partner and together the rain and snow and wind and unbearable heat became years of running and laughing and walk breaks and tears. I realized I had power.

I could fight through the urge to quit, the fear of falling on trails, the early mornings over and over and yet again because I said I would. I could conquer the frustration of always being slower, weaker, or dehydrated so I won't have to pee . I shout and chatter and sweat out all the daily mundane, the battles and hurts , worry and heartbreak.

I fly. Slog. Shuffle. Transcend.

I run because I am now on my way to being 50 and what if I can't?

Night after night I sense the howl of a wind closer and louder and stronger and I know come morning I will choose to be awake. To see . To run.

I wonder how others see us.

I have been going through old family photos with my brother who is visiting. I am trying to find stories in the faces, of the people, the expressions, the arms crossed or open. The spaces between or lack of .

I wonder if someone will look at our photos and see enough of me being engaged. Listening. Together.

I wonder how much we live the truth of the stories we want others to read.

the last day of the last visit I decided to sleep over . spend the night half asleep and listening to her breathing .
when she stirred and mumbled I was right there, leaning tight to the edge of the cocoon I'd made myself of various linens from the carts all up and down the hall, leaning with an outstretched arm and hand .
here mom , hold on. I'm here.
the hours that followed I wasn't of course. I was a wondering mother with her newborn, eyes finding mine in the moonlight of a vent. I was a pleading mother with teething or feverish or colicky infants and toddlers offering the curl of my flesh and bone, the life all here and yours and surely this is enough, this is the peace you crave and ache for seeping into your heart , all these tears swirling a river of mercy.
her fingers, clawed at my neck , grabbing at the strings of my sweatshirt pulling and twisting and I felt myself falling even though.

months prior I was patiently guiding her through the process of letting me cut her long yellowing fingernails. there was me playing at the caretaker daughter, there was her, not knowing rules or games . we'd found a necklace with a simple cross earlier , in the dust of her room, and she fingered it now admiring herself in the mirror . I wondered how much she recognized .
If I wear this maybe God will love me ?
I rinsed clippings, let tears go down the drain.
You are Beloved anyway mom. You always have been and always will be regardless and no matter and without the cross just because, I reassured her . Myself.

I untangled her fingers though I wasn't choking really, not as much.
Remembering. Believing.
The wonder of it all.
I'm here mom, let's hold each other and rest now.

It's probably not what you expected.

It's not what I expected when I downloaded the photos from my camera.

Joy. Whimsy. A kind of surreal beauty that I can't quite name.

It's been showing up in the even though of all these days that I could never have predicted.

I try not admit that I see everything with about me eyes but of course I do.

Until grace alone has me holding my youngest brother while we cry over cold coffee in the palliative care lounge. Regret and fear can have a surreal beauty. Just like that there was the gift of seeing that I hadn't expected at all , at all.

That the way to look at my freedom was that I was to give it away.

To help him name the loss for what it was so he could start filling up with joy and beauty after so much waiting.

To expect that which is always Mystery.

Because I am the other mothers too.

The ones who've run warm water while weeping , letting unused yogourt and broth and sauce swirl down drains.
Rewashed the load from days ago before the phone call.
Brought in shoes too late from the rain.

I am you who haven't noticed
the night become day
instead attending every detail.

The beeps and drip drips and pressure cuff hiss a pathos.

You've been there.
Solemnly folding a damp cloth like it's a purificator. Wiping the blood that drips out an ear.

Because I am just like any one of us, who has given birth and then stood helpless .
Waiting . Waiting.

Waiting to be told of a common tragedy unfolding . Waiting to be told of it averted.

Perhaps just the Saturday prior in fact you found yourself bending over , under the bed and the spine board and the warming blankets and the swollen face of this barely a man who is still your baby,
to retrieve a scrap , a charm from the minutiae .

It was left there, a bit of froth .

You make it a pocket periapt.
A square of black sweater with a single button, the edges fraying from the quick cuts to free the hope. The brutality softening with every stroke of a praying mother's hands.

Every minute of all the waiting of all the mothers.

There is the me that perhaps you haven't met .
I'm not all gentle and sweet and deferring.

I have days where I like to hide in my family and then it turns into years
and then suddenly I'm waking from yet another nightmare and I have to find
a corner of the cabana where I can hide from my family
and make another phone call.

Another one ,
that while it feels more like a quiet knock
Is still an explosion.

I feel it inside my head and I'm 5 and I'm 10 and I'm 18
and I'm having babies and then I'm just saying f you and then I'm just too many shards and I can't hear what you might need to say to me so I just quit believing.

A make believe denial that works for us.
Except it doesn't .

And I stand
dripping sweat and watching the flies and saying and offering and asking and wondering and it was a miracle.
I have you back and I won't ever let you go again.

And I meant my I Love You even though I've probably never said it before .
Except maybe when we both thought we were living a dream even when we weren't and then
it all exploded

and I forgot that you needed gentle and sweet and a mama
more than me even.

And I remember singing Jesus Loves Me to you
and how I'd forgotten .

And maybe we can find her together .

And maybe we don't need to really, after all.

But we just need each other.

I'm always a few steps behind. In everything pretty much. But I'm trying to see.

My stepfather and I are years of moments behind in pretty much everything. But I'm trying to hear.

Does the sun dance before it sets to remind you to ?

Does it make you want to cry with the power of something you can't quite name because that is the point?

You think of something Annie Dillard wrote , about the Tulip tree hurling out a great , fringed fling of green from the turning of gravel and bitter salts into life. That if you keep biting down on the hard, you'll swell, bud. Bloom.

You say the comfort words, the mother , friend , and citizen words because you know how it feels after all, you know how it felt and look here at all that the light keeps showing you.

You start to fall asleep , like your lover and best friend has , here on the porch under the moon and the day that in the press of a tear damp cheek on the mountain of a shoulder becomes weightless.

You've taken photos of , and read stories of ,

and the voice?

You heard it where you least expected it , of course.

And can't quite find the way to put down the words.

~~~ I am thinking how we can learn of a death and a life together , and how we just really don't need to understand why.

spring song

the green of Jesus

is breaking the ground

there is laughter and it carries up through vents and down over the banister and it's in the piling on of limbs on my bed and dishes on the island and stories stories stories

like a wedding and we're dancing around

it's in and out the front and the back and side by each and a hug from behind and a request for more and again

I stand at the porch doors looking out. Waiting on creation . Magnolia, brunnera, wisteria. Weeds even.
Bees.

I turn and it's a day all carpeted in the sun on flesh and voices shouldering up through the ceramic and hardwood

Shoes and cups sprout , multiply,

as does the clamouring for car keys, dreams, a place to shoulder pain and fear, the impossible, the inevitable.

Humanity binding right here in lives all unfurling , matting and knitting and clinging .

Thunder and rain thrums

Did I Miss Anything?

                       Question frequently asked by
                       students after missing a class

Nothing. When we realized you weren't there
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full two hours

   Everything. I gave an exam worth
   40 percent of the grade for this term
   and assigned some reading due today
       on which I'm about to hand out a quiz
   worth 50 percent

Nothing. None of the content of this course
has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose

        Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
        a shaft of light descended and an angel
        or other heavenly being appeared
        and revealed to us what each woman or man must do
        to attain divine wisdom in this life and
        the hereafter
        This is the last time the class will meet
        before we disperse to bring this good news to all people on earth

Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?

        Everything. Contained in this classroom
        is a microcosm of human existence
        assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
        This is not the only place such an opportunity has been gathered
        but it was one place

I watched her hands ; blue, whorled, cross hatched.

Multiple rings contain each finger because company has come.

I'm company.

Deb.

The one she's always talked to, a friend? Sister? A daughter.. oh , yes." We always talk, right?"

Her voice and words keep changing , like someone's turning the radio dial on her thoughts and emotions.

She 's missing a front tooth, the dexterity to have gotten her part right, the years where I had her grandchildren. My husband's name.

Her hugs keep throwing me off balance. They are a first.

I turn the pages of photo albums and she flips from year to year, person to person , story to story . Much of it wrong.

Heart wrenching. Bitter. Terrifying.

She drinks again and again from an empty coffee cup, gets up to collect trinkets to send me home with, hoping I'll pop by when I'm bored.

I put the dusty salt and pepper shakers back again.

Notice she has five nail clippers lined up with the razors , ask her why she is shaving her eyebrows off , catch my breath at the wedding photo of my father and her and a piper.

I'd forgotten that one . Seen it everyday for ten years and forgotten and I'm dizzy, and wondering if this is how she feels minute to minute.

She's a shadow, tapping the glass.

"He was my best" and she cries , tearless.

I have my voice here in this dream.

"Do you know who he is to me ?" I ask.

" I think you met him when you were little" she says, slowly, not sure.

A flicker .

It's fear.

I place my hand on her shoulder and guide her away. I suggest we go outside and sit in the sun for a bit.

I need some light.

I tell her she can call me anytime. Reliving and delusion are her chains . I'm bound . Losing air.

This makes her laugh. She needs people to trust.

I realize she can't use the phone. Can't find my number. "I'll call you. " I reassure , clutch my purse, cling to the time that signals the trip back home.

right now, I am

:: marveling that my youngest baby turned 13 today.

:: recovering from yesterday's 9.5km run, and actually excited by the challenge of preparing for the half-marathon I am registered for in September. And terrified.

:: feeling at a loss of words for how blessed I am to be married to my best friend, and have five incredible children who inspire and teach me . And I get to love them . And their hugs are dreams come true over and over.

:: being pestered by my dog as he is utterly confused by the leftover bbq ribs still out on the counter . part of bday girl's dinner request, awaiting the arrival of a sister from work.

:: noticing that I am surprisingly at peace with Wednesday's upcoming visit to see my mother. but unable to write about this just yet as I slowly process the phone call .

:: seeing sewing scraps under the dining room table that make me so very grateful for creating and texture and the soothing noise of my machine and the endless possibilities , even if I never get to them.

:: rejoicing in Lent, the journey , the grace, the trust

:: enjoying the first weekend of eating outside, of putting away flip flops instead of boots, smelling humidity and wet dirt and the piled on memories of summer inside the pool cabana.

:: looking forward to two away student/children returning home in a few weeks, but worried and excited for and proud and a little in denial about one that will not

:: loving my new Mac laptop

:: trusting in love , and Love and the lilac buds pushing purple explosions right outside the kitchen window

:: thinking that I will never be able to express to everyone in the blogging community how they are roots from which I am living and breathing and burning
