SEC Football is back...here's a few of my thoughts and questions for the season.

1. Will Tyler Wilson and the Razorbacks shock the SEC West?

3. How bad will Ole Miss be and will Nutt survive?

4. Will Florida be in the Top 25 at mid-season

5. Can Alabama will the National Title?...Yes, that is my Pick!

My only thought, as I sit here on Saturday morning watching my daughter play at McDonalds is, "Damn I can't wait for SEC football." Am I addicted???

Football addiction is something that is hard for me to understand, yet I know it's something I don't want to do without. (I guess if I was a smoker I would have a similar challenge trying to explain it.)

For years, I never knew I had it. I never saw it as a problem until, get this, I got married! Now being pissed about missing a kickoff, watching 2 TVs (P-in-P for you fancy dudes), or being emotionally excited about the WatchESPN app release is seen as "weird." What people (my wife) don't understand is those events/shows, only fuel the real addiction which is talking, arguing, debating and sometimes fighting about this ultimate reality show.
I love the debate. The constant thrill of What will happen next?, How will 'Coach' react?, Who will become a 'Star' today?, and Who will WIN?. Looking at stats, previous games, and like opponents so I can make what some would call an "educated guess." on why the team I picked will beat the team you picked. Educated guess, ha, I find that to be funny. My guess is no more educated than any of those Gameday guys, or the kids on your local kindergarten playground. (See what I did there?)

There's not much in this world that I crave nearly everyday. Outside of family, food, water (leaded and unleaded) and SportsCenter. When I add football, my day is pretty much complete.

Why am writing this? Good question, but I don't have a good answer. I just started typing and look what happen.

2011 SEC Men’s Basketball Preseason Awards Announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference unveiled its seventh annual men's basketball coaches' preseason All-SEC first and second teams Wednesday, tipping off another great season of SEC men's basketball.

Twenty-nine different players received votes for the teams and Florida led all schools with four selections while Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt had two selections each. In all, nine different schools are represented on the preseason squads.

The coaches' preseason All-SEC first and second teams consist of a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the SEC Head Men's Basketball Coaches. No ties were broken and no predicted order of finish was made.

Media Tabs Florida As 2011 SEC Men’s Basketball Champion

Birmingham, Ala. -- Florida was predicted to win the 2011 Southeastern Conference men's basketball championship in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. Each SEC school selected media members that cover their team and additional writers from across the nation were selected by the conference office to form the voting panel.

The Gators are coming off a 21-13 season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They earned eight first-place votes, topping Mississippi State which earned three votes. Tennessee and Kentucky each received two votes and Georgia garnered one vote as SEC Champion. Florida returns all five starters, including Kenny Boynton, Erving Walker, Chandler Parsons, Alex Tyus and Vernon Macklin while adding one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

Florida was the media's favorite to win the East with 110 total points (13 first-place votes), ahead of second-place Kentucky's 95 points (three first-place votes). Georgia (72 points) and Tennessee (71 points) were separated by just one point while Vanderbilt and South Carolina rounded out the top six.

In the West, Mississippi State's 118 total points (18 first-place votes) were ahead of Ole Miss' 84 points (two first-place votes). Alabama was picked third with 82 points. Arkansas, LSU and Auburn round out the top six in the West.

Georgia junior Trey Thompkins was the choice of the media for SEC Men's Basketball Player of the Year with 18 votes. Ole Miss senior Chris Warren (one vote) and Kentucky Freshman Brandon Knight (one vote) also received votes in the Player of the Year voting.

Thompkins, Warren and Knight were joined on the All-SEC First Team by Georgia junior Travis Leslie and Vanderbilt junior Jeffery Taylor.

Arkansas' Marshawn Powell led All-SEC Second Team honors and was joined by Florida's Boynton and Parsons, Alabama's JaMychal Green and Tennessee's Scotty Hopson.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Each media member also voted for one team as an overall conference champion and a five-player All-SEC Team.

The 2010-11 SEC Media Preseason Poll tips off SEC Basketball Media Day, October 21 at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Alabama. The 2010-11 season begins November 12, with conference play set to begin January 8. The 2011 SEC Tournament will be held March 10-13 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga.

SEC BOWL AGREEMENTS

The Southeastern Conference has agreements to send nine of its member institutions to

postseason bowl games following the 2010 season.

The winner of the SEC Championship Game will automatically participate in the Bowl

Championship Series comprised of the Sugar, Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls.

The Capital One Bowl has the second selection, making its pick following the BCS selections.

The bowl must select the team with the next best overall record or a team that is within

one win of the team with the next best overall record.

The AT&T Cotton and the Outback Bowls share the third and fourth selections from the SEC.

The Cotton Bowl has the first preference of teams from the Western Division and the Outback

Bowl has first preference of teams from the Eastern Division. The Cotton or Outback Bowl can

select teams outside of its divisional preference, but must not select them before the opposite

bowl selects from its divisional preference.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl has the fifth selection of preference from the SEC.

New to the SEC bowl rotation this year, the Gator Bowl has the sixth selection from the SEC.

The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl has the seventh selection from the SEC.

In selections 8-9, the AutoZone Liberty and Birmingham Bowls share the selection over the

four-year agreement.

Alabama, South Carolina, and Arkansas, ranked right where they should be?

The latest polls are out and SEC fans aren't particularly happy. Why, you ask…Let's talk about it.

Then #1 Alabama lost to then #19 South Carolina resulting in a new ranking of Alabama #8 and South Carolina #10. That's a 7 spot DROP for the Tide and a 19 spot JUMP for the Gamecocks. Both position moves are incredible if you ask me, but there are some angry Gamecock fans out there simply because they think USC should be ranked higher than Bama because they beat them. Novel concept right?

In my opinion, the polls got it right, you won't hear me say that much, but in this case I will, and here's why.

·         The best team on the field Saturday, October 9^th was the South Carolina Gamecocks = TRUE.
·         The best team in country until Saturday, October 9^th was the Alabama Crimson Tide = TRUE.
·         These to team met and South Carolina won the game = TRUE.

Here's comes the BUT…

If these two teams were to play a 3 game series, who would likely win the series?

·         I have to believe, based on how the 2 teams have played other games to date, that Alabama would most likely win this series. With that said, if I had a vote, I would have ranked Alabama above South Carolina. I probably would have even ranked them higher than 8.

It is my thought that if all match ups were to be played as a series, i.e. baseball, you are more likely to hand the "W" to the correct team. We all know that 1 game and every game in the SEC is tough to win. Some teams are better than others, but on a given night, anyone can steal a win.

I don't want to take anything away from the HBC (Head Ball Coach) and the Gamecocks, they played great (except for the safety that could have been avoided) and they deserve all the things that come from beating the #1 ranked team in the country. I just don't think they are hands down a better team than Alabama.

So what else are SEC fans upset about, you ask?

How about the sub-Top 10 ranking for the high powered Offense of Arkansas? Arkansas faced Texas A&M this past weekend and jumped out to big lead behind the cannon arm of Ryan Mallett. For those you who follow the Hogs, this is a typical start when they are playing a solid team. Long story short, Hogs scored big early, then had to hang on for dear life for the victory as they continue to struggle with turnovers late, largely due to the fact that they can't run the call consistently enough to kill the clock.

So the Razorbacks are currently ranked #12, down from #11 prior the Texas A&M win. But the 1 spot fall is not the issue I'm hearing about. The issue is more around why they are not ranked in the Top 10 with the other 1 loss teams such as Alabama and South Carolina. Hmmm.

My first answer to the question is ROOM. There are only 10 spots go around and 8 of the them have undefeated teams renting them.

My second answer is Arkansas hasn't beaten anyone to deserve the top 10 respect it wants. Arkansas' schedule and results look like this…

2.       Louisiana-Monroe (Blowout)
3.       @ Georgia (31-27 Hogs)
4.       Alabama (24-20 Tide)
5.       Off
6.       Texas A&M (24 – 17 Hogs)

What about this schedule says Top 10? Nothing – Sure they beat UGA on their turf, but we all know Georgia is nowhere near their normal team and even farther away from their pre-season Top 25 ranking than Mark Richt wants to think about. The Alabama game did way more harm to the Hogs than just a SEC West loss. It exposed 3 things: 1) Arkansas cannot run the ball. 2) Mallett will make bad decisions when pressured. 3) Arkansas Defense while better than last year, will give up big plays if you keep pounding away.

Let's face it, if Arkansas beats Alabama, which they would have if not for the 3 items above, then they are Top 10, probably even Top 7, but they didn't. South Carolina added more fuel to the fire by beating the Tide in much the same way that Arkansas had a chance to do. If the Hogs beat Auburn this weekend then they will jump into the Top 10. If they don't, it wouldn't surprise me to see them fall to #19 or 20. I really like Arkansas, especially the QB/WR combos they fire at you, but they have to start blowing out weaker teams and closing out these SEC teams once they get that 1^st half lead they normally start with.

My 2 cents, suggest that Alabama, South Carolina and Arkansas are ranked right where they should be. If will all shake out in the end, all you have to do is win baby win!

SEC Players of the Week - Week 4

• Newton completed 16-of-21 passes for 158 yards and two

touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 176 yards on 25 carries

and three touchdowns in Auburn's 35-27 win over #12/15

South Carolina.

• Newton accounted for 334 yards of total offense and five

touchdowns. Of his 46 offensive plays, only six did not gain

any yardage and only one lost yardage.

• 11 of his 25 rushing attempts were for first downs and also

threw for eight first downs, making him responsible for 19 of

Auburn's 29 first downs in the game.

• Newton is the first quarterback in school history to throw for

two or more TDs in the first four games this season. He is also

the only player in the SEC this season to have two 170+ rushing

yardage performances.

was returned 33 yards to the Arkansas 12-yard line to set up

the Tide's game-winning touchdown.

• His first interception of the game was in the second quarter

in the endzone to stop an Arkansas drive.

• The Alabama defense held Arkansas to 15 points under its

season average (35.3 points) with just three coming in the

second half.

• Lester's four interceptions leads the SEC and tied for second

in the NCAA.

• Mallett's TD passes were from 57, 22 and 40 yards. His 57-yard scoring pass to Chris Gragg in the first quarter was Mallett's eighth scoring throw of 50-or-more yards in 16 games at Arkansas.
• The 380-yard passing total was the second highest total ever for an Arkansas quarterback in a road game and the most for a Razorback in an SEC road opener.

Coach Cal is no Coach K!

According to AP reports, the University of Kentucky is set to offer John Calipari a lifetime contract. Are you kidding me? Just the thought of this blows me away. While I'm a huge SEC fan and love to any and all SEC teams do well, I can't believe anyone could be sold on Coach Cal for life.

I've written about Coach Cal on multiple occasions, so we won't dive into his past too much tonight, but I will look at his present. Where should we start, the sub-par team GPA; the most talented team in the country that couldn't make the final 4; losing the entire fab freshman class to the NBA draft; or how about the assist coach who can't control the bottle? What about these issues says, "life-time contract?"

Duke's Coach K has a "life-time" contract, but in comparison, his makes sense. Just look at this list of accomplishments:

I know; I know...Cal is the hottest coach on the planet right now, I can't argue that. I can't even argue that he's not a good coach; but I can argue that UK has all but admitted that "winning" is way more important than integrity, honesty, and developing people. Duke and Coach K have openly embraced these ideals and guess what? They won the National Championship...Hmmm.

Where is the Arkansas Razorback basketball team headed?

Courtney Fortson has officailly killed the hopes of the Arkansas Razorback program. The team that showed little be get excited about in their 2009-2010 campaign has just learned that their "star" player has not only thrown his name into the NBA draft ring, he has signed with an agent. As we all know the act of signing with an agent officially ends your college career.

Why does this shock me? Two reasons: 1. Courtney Fortson is no where near being ready for the NBA. While he does show some impressive skills from time to time, I am generally more amazed at the number of turnovers he has in a single half of basketball. 2. I wonder who is giving these kids such awful advice on turning pro? Once I saw that he had signed with an agent, I pretty much had my answer to this question.

Now on to John Pelphery, the head coach. I hope he has the number for a good moving company. In other words, his days are numbered. Many of us thought he would not make it through this last year, but for some reason Jeff Long (the AD) turned his head and gave Pel another year. Sadly the best prospects on the Arkansas recruiting list are all still in high school, and Pel is sure to be gone before they walk across the stage. If the Hogs finish anywhere north of last in the West I'll be shocked, amazed, and floored. I'd almost be willing to place a small wager on it.

Calipari: Past vs. Future

UK chose to overlooked John Calipari's rumors and questionable past (2 schools on Probation, and 1 NBA firing) in order to "win." Can UK overlook his 'present' and 'future' in the name of "winning?"

You would think everyone would be excited to have 5 NBA level players on one team, but after finishing the year short of a title and a Final Four, you have wonder if it's worth it. All 5 kids will likely leave UK and turn pro. Most of them leave with lingering questions out their educational background and dedication to UK. Aren't these kids the 'real' reason UK wanted Coach Cal? Blue Chips who could put the 'Wild' back in Wildcat basketball. What happens if Cal can't replace this unreal talent? Will they [UK] finally take a moment to look at his past? Add to Cal's list Asst. Coach Rod Strickland's DUI (his 4th) and I'm not sure the UK/Calipari future is as bright as it could be.

Ole Miss 'Rebels' - Are you kidding me?

So today the Ole Miss student body will vote on whether 'they' should be apart of the process to replace the Ole Miss mascot. My understanding is that they are only considering the replacement of the over-stuff "Colonel Reb" character that was dropped 7 years ago after increased complaints from alumni and athletic department leaders. They are not voting to replace the association with the 'rebel' concept! That, my friend, is my 'are you kidding me?' statement!

In my opinion, and this may make Ole Miss fans hate me, the entire Rebel association and concept should me revamped. Not only does this concept hurt recruiting in athletics, it hurts recruiting of new students period. While many of the kids that are of college age don't care what the rebel term and flag stands for, their parents do.

The state of Mississippi as a whole still has a HUGE image problem throughout this country. Don't believe me, just walk-up to any one of your friends and family, and tell them you are thinking about moving to Mississippi and see what they say. This association with Rebels only fosters this image issue. I'm not blaming Ole Miss for the states image issue, I'm simply saying this backwards thinking only contributes to it. Embracing a new concept at the University of Mississippi would go along way in telling the country that we have moved on. Bottom line, the Rebel and its animated mascot should go!
