Reduce the Risk for Trash Fires

Did you know that certain types of materials, when improperly placed into the trash, can be significant fire hazards, capable of starting fires?

Materials such as rechargeable batteries, propane and oxygen tanks, butane lighters, ashes from fireplaces and barbecue grills, and other types of hazardous materials are capable of starting fires when

mixed in loads of waste and picked up by refuse collection trucks
waste is transported in rail cars on the way to waste processing or disposal facilities; and while
waste is being processed at Montgomery County’s Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station or at the Resource Recovery Facility

Therefore, to reduce the risk for trash fires, DO NOT place the following materials in your trash

Flammable or combustible liquids (such as gasoline, oil-based paints, or kerosene)
Hazardous materials (including items such as ammonia, bleach, pool chemicals, pesticides, paint thinners, etc.)
Canisters containing propellants (including butane or propane)
Cylinders containing compressed gas (such as propane, helium, oxygen, acetylene or fire extinguishers)
Rechargeable batteries (which contain heavy metals, including lithium, nickel cadmium or lead-acid)
Ashes (from fireplaces, fire pits or barbecue grills) – more information on proper disposal of ashes from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (PDF)
Unknown substances (will be managed as Household Hazardous Waste)

These items should be properly disposed through Montgomery County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, or other special collection processes available at the Montgomery County Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station, located at 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood.

Renting a truck on a weekend for moving a large load that might be over 500 pounds?

Come on Saturday, when the truck scales are open from 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Staff working on Sundays are directed to turn away loads over 500 pounds, for which we are required to charge under the County code.

Avoid the weekend crowds

The Transfer Station's Public Unloading Facility and Recycling lots are open until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in addition to the usual daytime hours. There is very light traffic in the evening. So, if you want to avoid long lines, try a weekday evening trip (loads must be under 500 pounds).

Monday May 22, 2017 - Solid Waste Collection Update Notice

Over the last month, we experienced a higher than normal level of service problems with one of our solid waste collection contractors, Potomac Disposal, Inc., specifically impacting the Bethesda and Silver Spring areas. While trash collection is occurring on the regular schedule, residents in these areas continue to experience delays in the collection of yard trim, scrap metal, and small amounts of recycling.

The County has actively worked to address this unacceptable level of service and has contracted with The Goode Companies, Inc., to provide collection services effective Tuesday, May 30 (the week of Memorial Day, which is a “slide” week) for trash and bulk items, yard trim, and scrap metal in the Silver Spring area. This should result in an immediate improvement in the level of service in both the Silver Spring area and, indirectly in the Bethesda area as Potomac is able to concentrate its available resources for yard trim in Bethesda. Potomac will continue to be responsible for collection of recyclables, and has assured the County that they have sufficient crews to provide recycling collection service.

We expect to be able to announce a similar solution for the Bethesda area within the next week.

County staff will continue to monitor these neighborhoods to evaluate the contractors’ performance, and follow-up on any reported collection problems.

Until these collection service solutions are in place, if your yard trim, scrap metal and/or blue bin/blue cart is not collected on your normal County collection day, please leave your material at the curb. The contractor will collect missed items as soon as possible.

We apologize for any inconvenience this situation is causing.

Keep Certain Materials Out of Your Trash Can.

Fires can occur in piles of trash as trash is collected in trash trucks, and when trash is delivered and aggregated at the Transfer Station and the Resource Recovery Facility for processing. Certain materials can individually pose a fire hazard. Other items pose a risk for fire when they come into contact with other materials.

To reduce the risk of trash fires at your home, in our trash collection vehicles, or at our disposal facilities, please keep the following materials or items out of your trash:

· Hazardous materials

· Chemicals

· Gasoline and other flammable liquids

· Oil-based paints

· Rechargeable batteries (containing heavy metals, including lithium)

· Ash from fireplaces or fire pits or barbeque grills

Deer rescue at the Oaks Landfill

Last Friday, County and State personnel responded to help a deer in distress that had somehow gotten into the fenced lagoon area at the Oaks Landfill leachate pre-treatment facility.

The deer had slipped into a lined lagoon. It could not get out because the liner was too slippery. Fortunately, that lagoon had only clean storm water in it.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources representative chased the deer around in the water with our small boat to tire it out. He was then able to capture it.

The men took the deer to a safe location to untie it, and it went on its way.

New at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station: a well-deserved Brush Lot loader! These loaders work all day, every day, pushing up the brush pile, and loading truck... after truck... after truck. The old loader will be auctioned off to get additional return on investment for us! (Thanks for the photo, Dave.)
