Cisco's Android Tablet For Businesses Bombed And Now It's Dead (CSCO)

Cisco has killed its year-old Cius tablet, the company said in a blog post.

This isn't exactly shocking. The tablet was a strange, overpriced beast for Cisco.

While Cisco's general idea with this tablet wasn't bad, the way Cisco went about it was odd. Cius was supposed to represent a new breed of communications for the enterprise. It was supposed to be something IT departments bought for employees instead of a telephone -- and maybe instead of a telephone and a PC.

It was chock full of Cisco's collaboration software for making calls and video conferences. It was supposed to be more secure because only apps from a corporate-owned app store could be loaded onto it. In other words: No Angry Birds.

The Cius never really sold well, sources told us, though Cisco officials wouldn't release actual numbers. In order to really use it as a phone replacement, you had to have the tablet (priced at about $700) and a docking station (another couple hundred bucks).

Cisco didn't sell Cius to consumers either. It could only be bought by companies.

In a blog post, the company said it was formally pulling the plug. "Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases."

Despite the failure with Cius, we applaud Cisco for trying something new.

Cisco sees enterprise collaboration as a $45 billion market and it has been going after it with a vengeance, with mixed results. It has WebEx and a product called Jabber, a competitor to Microsoft Lync. Jabber is available on the iPad and has won over some surprise customers, like Groupon. Collaboration now represents 21% of Cisco's revenue but year-over-year revenue for the unit was flat last quarter.

This includes the project's leader, Matthew McNulty, says The Verge.

Enyo was one of the open source projects that emerged from the webOS fiasco. It's a software tool that lets users create an app once then easily put it on multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and all major desktop Web browsers.

HP released Enyo as an open source project in January, as part of plans for webOS after it killed the webOS tablet.

In January, sources at HP told Business Insider that McNulty was a leader to watch in the company.

What's crazy is that HP is a company absolutely DYING for innovation in its PC business. And these guys were chock full of know-how with HTML5, which is the next big thing when it comes to mobile app development.

Business organizations and their CIOs are particularly perplexed about how to migrate cost-effectively to a “UC-enabled” communications environment, when their legacy telephony investments are still functional. Rather than replace working technology, adding in missing technology “holes” will be a practical implementation strategy. Customer mobility, complicated by “Customer BYOD,” is one the biggest “holes” for maximizing customer experiences and revenue generation.

HP earnings tumble; 27,000 job cuts confirmed

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) CEO Meg Whitman said the company "exceeded our previously provided outlook," for the second quarter and admitted the company still had "a lot of work to do," after announcing second quarter earnings Wednesday that included sharply lower net income.

Whitman said the company would continue its restructuring and also confirmed plans to cut 27,000 jobs, or about 7 percent of its global workforce, in an effort to move the company forward.

HPs net income of $1.6 billion, or 80 cents a share, topped Wall Street expectations, as did the $30.7 billion in revenue it reported. But the net was down 31 percent, from $2.3 billion, or $1.07 per share a year ago. Revenue was off 3 percent.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company saw shares rise in after hours trading more than 9 percent to $23, after closing down 3.21 percent. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $20.57 to $37.70.

In a New York Times interview, Whitman said, "We don't aspire to have a 3 percent decline in revenues. There are big changes going on, and we have to position ourselves."

Whitman told the Times that HP "will be much bigger," both in employees and revenue.

First, however, come the job cuts, many of which will be from the U.S. workforce. The company expects those cuts to help trim costs by $3.5 billion a year.

Feds launch unit to eavesdrop on VoIP, Skype, online and wireless chats

Rumored to be in the works for the past couple of months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly has quietly launched a new unit charged with developing methods to surveil online, wireless, and VoIP communications. The unit, known as the Domestic Communications Assistance Center, apparently isn't something the FBI is eager or wiling to talk about, declining to tell CNET the name the person in charge of it. But, CNET reports, DCAC 's mandate includes intercepting Skype messages, building wiretap devices, and serving as a "surveillance help desk" for local, state, and federal authorities. Article

Vidyo scores customer win with India's Sify

While there's still plenty of debate, and some confusion, over the return on investment of unified communications, one piece that companies are rapidly adopting is videoconferencing, a service that helps them contain travel costs and helps remote workers and teams collaborate.

One of the hottest companies in the space, and one of the newest, Hackensack, N.J.-based Vidyo, just announced another partnership with a big IT company, India's Sify Technologies Limited.

The two are partnering on Sify videomeet, a new-gen Videoconferencing-as-a-Service.

The product is aimed at enterprises and emerging businesses, and allows users to initiate high-definition, multi-point video collaboration on multiple devices without the need for dedicated networks.

A major selling point, especially for emerging businesses, is that the V-a-a-S product doesn't entail any capital expenditure for the customers. Enterprises with legacy videoconferencing infrastructure also can adopt the service without any new capital investment. The service eliminates the need for a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) or any other video conferencing device at the premises of the customer, reducing the total cost of ownership.

The company is rolling out two models, a fixed rate for unlimited videoconferencing access, or a pay-as-you-go service.

Vidyo this week also announced Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) as a new investor through its Junos Innovation fund. The networking company is joining lead investor QuestMark Partners in the funding round and other existing investors Menlo Ventures, Rho Ventures, Star Ventures and Four Rivers Group.

Vidyo said the latest cash infusion will be used to increase its go-to-market activities and integrate its video conferencing products with Juniper's offerings.

Cisco likely to weather Europe's economic crisis

PARIS--Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) shares took a pounding after it issued a-less-than-stellar outlook for the current quarter, with CEO John Chambers saying the company was worried about Europe's economic climate.

He's not alone. At the IHS European Technology, Media Telecoms Summit here on Wednesday, Ralf Wiegert, principal economist, economics and country risk for research firm IHS sounded a similar warning--especially with the current turmoil ongoing in Greece--calling the economic situation in Europe for telecom companies and vendors "volatile, risky and disheartening."

His outlook for the rest of the world was far less cataclysmic. The U.S. market, he said, while sluggish, is still growing. And, he expects China's current disruptions to nevertheless result in a "soft landing."

"The overall global expansion that's occurred is likely to remain intact," he said, but Europe's southern tier, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal will continue to struggle with rising unemployment, and falling tax revenues. "There is no east way out of Europe's multiple crises," he added. Even so, strength in Europe's core and northern tier should mitigate some of the damage in the second half of the year.

Cisco, meanwhile, has more than held it's own and seen strong growth in North America.

New research from Infonetics, showed that while the global service provider router and switch market saw a sequential decrease of 14 percent--to $3.3 billion in the first quarter of 2012--the market is essentially flat, down just 1 percent from a year ago.

And, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent and Juniper Networks all gained share in the quarter, with Cisco seeing the biggest gain from 31 percent to 39 percent.

"Cisco is showing signs of a regained focus, and with the biggest installed base of routers at both operators and enterprises, they have an advantage that is hard to compete with," said Michael Howard, Infonetics Research's co-founder and principal analyst for carrier networks.

That, combined with the 9 percent growth the segment saw in the U.S. may help mitigate any pressure Cisco and other vendors feel in Europe.

By the way, this is my final issue as editor of FierceEnterpriseCommunications. I wanted to thank all of you, and the fine folks at Fierce, for making this such a gas.

COME ON MICROSOFT: If People Want Office On The iPad And Android, Don't Be Stupid About It (MSFT)

At this point, its almost crazy that Microsoft hasn't formally announced plans to bring Microsoft Office to the iPad and Android.

Rumors are again circulating that it will do just that, and in November, according to a story posted in BGR.

Microsoft had no comment. Last time these rumors surfaced, Microsoft had plenty to say. The app was reportedly leaked to The Daily in February and it caused a big flap. Microsoft denied the app was authentic and said that photo was fake. The Daily said Microsoft's protests were a crock because someone at Microsoft actually showed them the demo.

In the end, we settled for the story that what The Daily saw was just a test, not an actual planned product.

But here's the thing. Microsoft is crazy if it doesn't release Office for the iPad, Android and any other device out that people use. The company doesn't just make an operating system -- it makes business software and that software is very profitable. Why should the operating system side get to hamstring the business software side?

Yes, Microsoft will be selling its own Windows 8 tablets later this year. And it is obviously tempting for Microsoft to try and keep its flagship MS Office product exclusive to its own operating system. But long ago Microsoft decided to make software for the Mac (including Microsoft Office by the way). So iOS -- and Android for that matter -- should be no different.

As we've said before, by building first-class native versions of Office for every single popular platform out there, Microsoft will keep companies signing those lucrative long-term license agreements to cover all those Office seats. From there, Microsoft can keep them signing licenses for its data center products like Exchange (email), SharePoint (collaboration), Lync (videoconferencing).

IBM Bans Siri Over Fears That She's A Gossip Girl (IBM, AAPL)

Can the iPhone's Siri be trusted with all that stuff you tell her? Your searches? Your jokes? Your e-mail and texts?

Siri scares IBM so much that the company won't let employees use Siri on their iPhones at all ... at least not if they also want to use those iPhones to access the corporate network for e-mail and other files.

They are afraid of how much info Siri is collecting, how it is being stored and who she might repeat that stuff to. IBM CIO Jeanette Horan explained it to MIT's Technology Review.

IBM let's employees choose their own devices for work but then adds a security app that gives the IT department control. For instance, the IT department can remotely wipe the device's memory if it gets lost or stolen. That's pretty common -- a lot of companies with bring-your-own-device policies do that.

But IBM takes it one step further with Apple devices. They turn off Siri and they disable Apple's file storage cloud, iCloud. Employees have to use an IBM cloud instead called MyMobileHub, Technology Review reports.

IBM has good reason to worry. Whatever you say to Siri isn't between just you and your phone .. it is sent to Apple and Apple hasn't really spelled out where that data is stored, or for how long, who can use it and so on.

Apple's iPhone License Agreement just makes people agree to let Apple have it: "By using Siri or Dictation, you agree and consent to Apple’s and its subsidiaries’ and agents’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing, and use of this information, including your voice input and User Data, to provide and improve Siri, Dictation, and other Apple products and services," the agreement says.

By the way, IBM also bans Dropbox, Horan told Technology Review.

Sonus expands SBC portfolio, aims at medium to large enterprises, Tier 2/3 providers

Sonus Networks (Nasdaq: SONS) has rolled out the Sonus SBC 5100, a session border controller (SBC) that targets medium-to-large enterprises and Tier 2/3 service providers.

With increasing adoption of video and unified communications, the company said the Sonus SBC 5100 leverages SIP-based networks for enterprises and tier 2/3 service providers looking to simplify their infrastructure and deploy video and UC features. It also provides secure access to SIP trunking.

"SBCs are...being asked to carry many types of traffic including voice, video, and multimedia over many different technology manufacturers' products," said David Lover, VP of strategy and technology for Arrow S3, a systems integrator and managed services provider of UC solutions. "Sonus helps normalize various vendors' interpretations of SIP usage."

The mid-sized SBC market has seen growth of 26 percent year-over-year, and Sonus has jumped knee-deep into the segment; the SBC 5100, in fact, is the third product in Sonus' portfolio of SBC solutions.

Sonus said the SBC 5100 includes a number of unique features, including voice codecs, routing and call control; it also was designed to be used in a variety of deployment scenarios.

The Sonus SBC 5100 is available for immediate order, and comes with a new version of software that's consistent across the Sonus SBC 5000 family of products.

In April, Infonetics said Westford, Mass.-based Sonus gained share in the SBC service provider market in the fourth quarter of 2011; it rode that increased share to revenues in Q1 2012 that beat Wall Street estimates.

The company last month reported revenue was down 4.4 percent to $64.3 million, topping analyst forecasts of $58.6 million for the quarter. Increased sales helped narrow Sonus's losses for the quarter to $6.4 million, from $12.4 million a year ago, again besting analyst estimates.

Michael Dell Thinks Windows 8 Will NOT Be Hot In Businesses This Year (DELL)

Micheal Dell has joined the gloomy predictions on Windows 8.

"DELL Says Corporations are Still Adopting Windows 7, Unlikely that Windows 8 Will Have Large Adoption at Launch," tweets news site Benzinga.com while covering Dell's earnings today.

Dell's comments make a mockery out of Steve Ballmer's predictions that Windows 8 will have half a billion users in its first year. Although they're well in line with Microsoft's earlier statements that "the path to Windows 8 is through Windows 7" when it comes to enterprises.

Dell isn't alone with middling predictions about Windows 8 adoption early on. Last week, BMO analyst Keith Bachman issued a research note where he pronounced: “Windows 8 will prove to be a disappointment, at least out of the gate,” reports ZDNet.

Lack of enthusiasm for Windows 8 is hurting Dell and HP. Both companies are in bed with Microsoft and relying on the new operating system to boost their PC businesses and help them compete with Apple.

Dell posted its quarterly earnings today and its PC business was sluggish. Sales to consumers took a big hit, with revenue slipping 12 percent to $3 billion. Revenue in the quarter was $14.4 billion, a 4 percent decrease from the previous year, Dell said.

Please follow SAI: Enterprise on Twitter and Facebook.

Join the conversation about this story »

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has got some crazy rose colored glasses on when he looks at Windows 8.

He thinks 500 million people will be using it next year.

At least that's what he was blustering about in a speech at the Seoul Digital Forum on Tuesday, reports AFP.

Just to give you some context, Windows 7 was one of Microsoft's most successful operating systems in the past decade. It took nearly two years for Microsoft to sell the first 450 million Windows 7 licenses. And that was pretty darn good. By the end of 2011, Microsoft said it was firing up some 633,000 Windows 7 licenses PER DAY (compared to 335,000 licenses per day for Vista over the same period).

Companies are still just getting around to buying Windows 7, too -- in droves. In 2012, Ballmer says Microsoft will sell another 350 million Windows 7 licenses.

To reach half a billion users in one year, Microsoft would need to convince its core customers -- enterprises -- that they want Windows 8 right away and that's just not going to happen.

Windows 8 will make companies nervous. It is an attempt to turn PCs into combo gadgets -- a laptop and tablet in one. Microsoft already tried that with Windows 7, mind you, (think the Dell Inspiron Duo Tablets and the HP TouchSmart). But this time, Microsoft is trying this oddball approach. Windows 8 is two operating systems in one. Windows 8 has a new Metro interface plus the old Windows interface but traditional Windows apps won't always be able to run in Metro mode and vice versa.

Companies have learned to not move to new Microsoft operating systems until it rolls out the first big big update, known as service pack 1, which often doesn't happen until about a year after the new operating system is released. It isn't until that point that they feel safe that the big bugs have been found and fixed and that the OS has been tested to work with their most important business apps.

UPDATE: Microsoft PR contacted us to clarify. Ballmer was talking about the number of Windows 7 PCs that COULD upgrade to Windows 8 -- half a billion, based on the number of Windows 7 licenses sold as of December, 2011, PR explained.

Video Value Series #3: Eliminating Meeting Tourists Through Video

A meeting tourist is someone who comes to a meeting, typically joining on an audio conference, and does not really participate in the meeting in a meaningful way. Deploying a "mandatory" system for video conferencing using desktop video and enabling a significant number of meetings in an organization for the express goal of reducing meeting tourism is a viable project. With management support, a change in culture that makes meeting attendance focused to those having input or decision making will change the overall productivity in significant ways.

Juniper Networks joins QuestMark Partners in Vidyo Series D funding

Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) is investing in video conferencing company Vidyo , through its Junos Innovation fund.

Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

The New Jersey-based startup has so far raised $97 million.

Vidyo currently has more than 1,850 enterprise, healthcare, education, and government customers for its telepresence platform, a platform that routinely is referred to as a disruptor in the accelerating conferencing and collaboration space.

"As the use of video in the enterprise and on end devices continues to expand, our customers are seeking new ways to improve video delivery," said Jeff Lipton, vice president, Venture and Strategic Investments, Juniper Networks. "Vidyo is an emerging player that is driving innovation in software-based videoconferencing."

Vidyo's co-founder and CEO, Ofer Shapiro, said the startup sees Juniper as "a kindred spirit," and said the investment "is a solid endorsement of our vision and a recognition of how rapidly the videoconferencing market is expected to grow."

RedSky releases cloud-based hosted E911 solution

Enhanced 911 services provider RedSky Technologies announced that its flagship product, E911 Manager Version 6, is now available as a hosted, cloud-based service.

The E911 solution integrates with major call servers/PBXs to track detailed location data from a range of phones on the enterprise network, including analog, digital, SIP, H.323, WiFi and softphones. The application automatically updates the location information used by emergency-service dispatchers at public safety answering points (PSAPs) throughout the nation.

E911 Manager works with platforms including Avaya, Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Siemens (NYSE: SI) and supports SIP endpoints and voice platforms, Chicago-based Red Sky said.

In addition to hosting on RedSky's private cloud, the automated E911 solution can be deployed on-premises, in a virtual environment or on a dedicated server.

RedSky SVP Nick Maier said offering E911 Manager as a hosted service provides deployment options to organizations that seek automated E911 protection.

"We are witnessing a major transition of enterprise applications moving to the cloud," Maier said. " We believe an increasing number of organizations will take advantage of E911 in the cloud to help manage their capital expenditures and IT staffing costs."

RedSky's E911 Manager is built on a Java/Linux platform that allows scalability and meets uptime requirements of enterprise applications, the company said.

Polycom snags Indian enterprise collaboration network deal

Polycom (Nasdaq: PLCM) will be providing its RealPresence solutions and an enterprise video collaboration network for 75,000 globally located employees of India-based Essar Group, The Economic Times reported.

Essar Group is deploying Polycom in its head office in Mahalaxmi and three other offices in Mumbai which will then be connected globally.

The conglomorate will use Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Lync environment for IM, presence, call control, Web conferencing, video and voice collaboration, as it follows a worldwide trend to reduce travel and downtime costs while ensuring business continuity.

"In the current competitive landscape, businesses such as ours are pressured to find the most efficient and effective ways to increase productivity and accelerate operations at a faster pace," said Essar Group CTO Jayantha Prabhu, calling video collaboration "mission critical" for the organization.

Aruba gets nod for Voice-over-WiFi test bed

Aruba Networks' wireless LAN has received a thumbs up from the WiFi Alliance as part of that organization's WiFi Certified Voice-Enterprise and WiFi certified WMM-Admission control programs to drive standards-based certification of wireless infrastructure with client devices for enterprise voice over wireless LAN deployments.

The WiFi Alliance, having already worked in the consumer space, is taking its many-into-one certification process into the enterprise space where voice-over-WiFi is a growing concern. The certification process selects products and solutions with which all vendors must interoperate.

WiFi Certified Voice-Enterprise is designed to provide good voice quality in large enterprise networks requiring support for advanced WPA2-enterprise security mechanisms. WiFi Certified WMM-Admission Control provides bandwidth management tools that optimize voice and video traffic delivery in wireless networks.

"These two new WiFi Alliance certification programs will make it much easier for enterprises to ensure voice quality on mobile devices, replacing the variety of disparate, proprietary solutions with certified, standards-based solutions," Dorothy Stanley, head of standards strategy for Aruba Networks said in a news release.

The certification of Aruba's 3200 Mobility controller and AP-105 mean that other ecosystem vendors must purchase Aruba products to test their implementation against the reference standard.

FCC initiative redoubles efforts for 'smart and streamlined' regulations

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday released its plan to take a fresh look at old regulations so to root out industry mandates that may be inconsistent, redundant, outdated or needlessly impede U.S. global competitiveness and dissuade industry investment.

Genachowski

Part of the administration's Campaign to Cut Waste, the regulatory reform initiative is aimed at making the FCC's rulemaking process more transparent, its regulatory program more effective and industry compliance less burdensome by removing unjustified regulations, streamlining procedures and ridding the FCC of counterproductive requirements that stymie economic growth and innovation.

The Final Plan for Retrospective Analysis of Existing Rules outlines the independent commission's strategy for a prudent and rational regulatory apparatus for the telephone, broadcasting, satellite and wired communications industries the FCC oversees, and keeps with the FCC's charge to protect consumers and ensure a competitive marketplace.

The Final Plan calls for systematic reviews of significant regulations and information-collection requirements to determine if the existing requirements have outlived their usefulness or become unfairly onerous or have unjustified costs.

"Every part of the Commission is involved in efforts to eliminate outdated regulations and to promote private investment and innovation that creates jobs and spurs economic growth," the document reads.

The commission's larger regulatory-reform efforts extend beyond just retrospective review.

The FCC plan indicates that to foster better outcomes in the rulemaking process, there is "early involvement" of the commission's chief economist and FCC staff members consult with the administration's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) on best practices for cost-benefit analyses, for instance.

The FCC rule-lookback plan follows President Barack Obama's nonbinding July 2011 executive order that independent federal agencies--such as the FCC and the Securities and Exchange Commission--join his administration's government-wide campaign against needlessly burdensome industry mandates.

Executive Order 13579 (76 FR 41587) called on independent federal agencies to consider "how best to promote retrospective analysis of rules that may be outmoded, ineffective, insufficient, or excessively burdensome, and to modify, streamline, expand, or repeal them in accordance with what has been learned."

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, a Democrat, said the Final Plan's release affirms the agency's "extensive efforts" to eliminate unnecessary regulations.

"Our commitment to smart and streamlined government is helping promote a healthy climate for private investment, innovation, and job creation, benefiting all Americans," said Genachowski, a 2009 Obama appointee.

The FCC has long had a statutory-mandated rule-review process. Section 11(a) of the federal Communications Act (Pub.L. 73-416), as amended, requires that every two years the commission consider whether a regulation warrants revision amid changes in technology, research or market structure.

Pai

The law requires the commission "to repeal or modify any regulation it determines to be no longer necessary in the public interest as the result of meaningful economic competition between providers of such service.

Newly minted FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai, a Republican, said the review should neither be done hastily nor in the usual fashion.

"In light of the importance of this comprehensive retrospective analysis, I believe that the 2012 Biennial Review should take the form of Commission-level action rather than bureau-level recommendations," " Pai, a former FCC deputy general counsel, said in a statement.

In its efforts to eliminate unnecessary government mandates on the communications industries, the FCC since 2009 has eliminated 219 regulations.

Among recent FCC streamlining instances noted in the Final Plan:

Modification of Outage Reporting Requirements: The commission amended outage reporting requirements for interconnected IP-based services, citing new technologies.

USF Contribution Reform: On April 27, the commission adopted a proceeding to reform the contribution side of universal service. It requires telecommunications carriers and certain other providers to contribute on the basis of their end-user revenues.

Wireless E911 Location Accuracy: In July 2011, the commission proposed measures to improve 911 availability and location determination for users of interconnected VoIP services.

IP-based Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) Technological Standards: The FCC said technological advances have resulted in the migration of the majority of TRS usage from public-switched telephone network services to IP-based services.

Docket Management: The commission amended its organizational rules to facilitate the termination of 999 dormant dockets.

The FCC released its Preliminary Plan for Retrospective Analysis of Existing Rules in November 2011. The five-member commission is among some 30 federal agencies and departments that submitted reg-reform plans to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, following the president's request.

Wireline faces tepid revenue growth through 2016, analysts say

Business spending on wireline services will remain essentially flat for years to come, as wireless revenues make modest gains, a newly released telecom market forecast indicates.

The U.S. wireline market "will increase slowly," from revenue of $162.9 billion at the end of 2011, to $167.9 billion by the end of 2016, the Insight Research Corp. report, Telecom Services in Vertical Markets, 2011-2016, forecasts.

If Insight Research's revenue projections hold, the telecom industry's wireline segment will have a lackluster compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, Insight projected wireless revenues will grow 9.4 percent, to $260.6 billion, over the five-year forecast period.

U.S. businesses, this year, are projected to spend $154 billion for telecommunications services; but, by the end of 2016, revenues will have grown to $184 billion, marking just 4.8 percent growth, Mountain Lakes, N.J.-based Insight said in its report.

Analysts blamed a tepid national economy for the mediocre sector growth they've forecasted.

"In light of the current economic uncertainty, companies are continuing to squeeze more out of what they have on hand, choosing to buy cheaper technology less frequently," the report reads. "This underscores the need for telecommunications carriers to abandon business models dependent on commodity offerings and move toward business models that provide services that cater to specific vertical industry needs."

Insight's research director, Fran Caulfield, said the U.S. telecommunications industry's continued "modest revenue growth" driven by business Internet and mobility solutions.

"As U.S. business activity recovers, employment and network traffic increase," she said. "In parallel, business applications shift to the cloud and end users shift to wireless access, driving higher network and wireless revenues for service providers."

To help jumpstart sales, the 120-page market forecast suggested the telecom industry eschew horizontal "one-size-fits-all" marketing and embrace solution-selling into vertical markets.

"Vertical marketing can open new doors, tap niche markets, and build customer loyalty," the report said. "When telecom providers focus on vertical market solutions, they move away from the commodity-voice sale and toward higher-margin, value-added services."

What's more, analysts said, the vertical approach to marketing "strengthens customer loyalty" by developing closer links to a customer's core business through product customization and support services such as documentation and training.

"Over the forecast period, an increasing percentage of the business revenue growth will come from enhanced services, often for vertical industries, as telecom providers seek to avoid damaging price competition by positioning their services as value-added solutions rather than commodities," the report reads.

For calculations of their revenue forecasts, Insight said analysts pulled total telecom revenues, divided the sum between the business and the residential markets and then examined driving forces in each of 14 selected vertical industry markets: wholesale trade; financial, insurance, and real estate services; professional business services; and communications.

Onvoy's VoIP-PSTN petition seeks originating access charges

Onvoy Voice Services is urging the Federal Communications Commission to allow local exchange carriers (LECs) to assess originating access charges on traffic within a carrier's MTA, or major trading area.

Jones

The Minneapolis-based, privately held wholesale-services provider has a pending petition for reconsideration or clarification of the landmark 2011 USF/ICC Transformation Order. Specifically, Onvoy's petition relates to pre-existing VoIP-PSTN bill-and-keep interconnection agreements.

In a May 15 ex parte presentation to Wireline Competition Bureau staff, the company outlined "technical obstacles" related to implementation of bill-and-keep for intraMTA traffic exchanged between wireline LECs and CMRS providers.

Onvoy counsel Thomas Jones, in an ex parte letter, reiterated a suggested remedy.

"The Commission should permit a wireline LEC to assess originating access charges on intraMTA calls where the wireline LEC originates the call and transmits it to an unaffiliated interexchange carrier which then transmits the call to a CMRS provider for delivery to the called party," wrote Jones, partner in the Communications, Media & Privacy Department at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.

At the presentation with Jones were Onvoy Inc. president Fritz Hendricks and company general counsel Scott Sawyer. The trio met with WCB officials Victoria Goldberg, Randy Clarke and Travis Litman, FCC papers indicate.

Onvoy's petition, filed in December 2011, asks the commission to clarify the default transitional rates adopted in the Universal Service Fund and Intercarrier Compensation (ICC/USF) Reform order do not apply to a LEC that has entered into an interconnection agreement to exchange local and toll VoIP-PSTN traffic on a bill-and-keep basis, even if that agreement contains a change-of-law provision.

The change of law in the order, they argue, ought only apply to carriers that did not have an existing agreement to exchange VoIP-PSTN traffic on a bill-and-keep basis. Moreover, allowing carriers that have been engaging traffic under bill-and-keep to begin charging higher transition default rates undermines the commission's goals, the company said.

"The order clearly permits LECs to assess access changes for the transmission of VoIP traffic despite the face the FCC has not ruled that VoIP is a telecommunications service," the company argued for the petition, adding that the FCC should not bar the collection of tandem switched access charges for calls to and from parties that are not purchasers of "telecommunications services.'"

The FCC Report and Order overhauling ICC/USF rules was published in the Federal Register (76 FR 73830) on Nov. 29, 2011. The rule became effective Dec. 29, 2011.

Onvoy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zayo Group Holdings, a Louisville, Colo.-based provider of bandwidth infrastructure and network-neutral colocation and interconnection services.

Getting to the Core of Unified Communications (Part 3)

In the Post-PC Era, advocated by many Unified Communication vendors, it seems that most services will be provided from some distant cloud, using features on devices employees bring to work managed by a service provider who splits bills between what is work and what is private. In this world, being a Value Added Reseller (VAR) or Systems Integrator (SI); it can feel as stuck between a rock and a hard place. Yes, I am exaggerating it a bit, but pushing what is happening to an extreme is a good way to identify what needs to be done, what competence is needed and who will be your competitors and partners for the future. However, there are opportunities; they lie in the land in between each point of integration, where standard clients meet business processes, where front-office meets back-office and where innovation meets legacy.

It was two years ago that I learned about ICMI’s annual ACCE conference and decided to attend the event in New Orleans. It was a refreshing experience — not too crowded, less technology propaganda, more business-oriented sessions, and a decent international flare. Since then I made up my mind to make an annual trek to ACCE, but alas I had to miss it in 2011.

I was glad to be able to go this year and got to also visit Seattle for the first time.

First of all, what a beautiful city. How do you Seattle residents get any work done?! The bustling downtown, the cool bay, the lush mountains, and whenever the sun decides to break through the clouds — the city unveils another dimension of herself to the world, sometimes unknown and unseen even to a native dweller. Starbucks started in this town (the original store is in Pike Place Market), but there are plenty of other notable coffee shops everywhere. Seattle runs on coffee.

Many well known corporations also have headquarters in Seattle and its surrounding area: Amazon.com, Clearwire, Costco, Cray, Expedia, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Nordstrom, RealNetworks, T-Mobile USA, and Zillow.com… These are just some of the diverse companies based around town.

Okay, enough city envy. What about ACCE?

‘Social’ is here, yet so far away

As with any other conference related to contact centers and customer service, the topic of social media continued to crop up. It was part of a keynote, there were multiple sessions about it, and ICMI encouraged attendees to tweet with the official hashtag #ACCE12. Too bad not many attendees were Twitter-savvy (or intentionally avoid it?), but at least a good number of exhibitors kept an eye on the tweet stream and stayed engaged throughout the event.

Most contact center managers or directors in attendance had social media on their radars. However, many stayed on the poolside still afraid to jump into the water. Either they didn’t know how to swim (how do I use social media?) or they didn’t have a floatation device (what resources do I need to prepare for it?).

Incorporating social media into the contact center is indeed a tricky proposition. In fact, sometimes it could even become a distraction or a trap. Adopting this channel into the contact center definitely requires the same considerations and planning as implementing other channels, like chat and email.

It’s probably a good thing that the majority of people are taking a cautious approach to social media, and not letting vendors any opportunity to stuff it down their throats amid the hype.

People and processes first

We all love cool contact center technologies, but it’s the agents — the people — in the centers who interface with customers. It’s also the processes they follow to serve customers’ needs.

Most often than not the customer could care less about your IVR platform, routing design, and multichannel capabilities. No technology can erase an unpleasant interaction with an agent. (Well, unless somebody invents the memory eraser gadget in Men In Black.) Eight-six percent of consumers will ditch you after just one unpleasant experience (Source: Harris Interactive, Customer Experience Impact Report).

Which is harder: running a small center or a large one?

The Small Call Center Summit was held on the last day of ACCE. It was an opportunity to hear about the pros and cons of managing and operating a small contact center. In attendance were folks who run centers varying from five agents to 50 agents. The challenges of managing a small center may not be unique, but they seem more dire in nature due to the small size and constant struggle for more resources.

Just think: in a contact center with 10 agents, if only two are absent then you’re faced with a 20% reduction in workforce. That spells certain disaster for the day’s service level…

But obviously it’s not easy running a center with 1,000 seats, either. Which do you think is harder?

When Tata Communications, the Indian telecommunications company, rolls out its infrastructure as a service cloud offering in America in the coming months, company officials want to claim differentiating features in the products. And one they're hoping to include is support for multiple hypervisors.

There's A Reason Google's Lawyers Were Laughing After Yesterday's Oracle Trial (ORCL, GOOG)

When push comes to shove, Oracle isn't going to collect $1 billion, much less $6 billion from Google's use of Java in Android, concludes IT law blog Groklaw.

"Don't let anyone fool you. Today was a major victory for Google. That's why after the jury left, our reporter says that Google's table was laughing, and Oracle's mighty glum," Groklaw wrote. "Remember the headlines about this being a $6 billion dollar case? It never was and now it never will be."

The jury found Google partially guilty. But it's not going to matter much because, after all was said and done, the only copyright violation found was 9 lines of code -- out of millions. Google admitted to copying them and had already, long ago, removed them. Oracle was forced to admit that these nine lines of code didn't have any monetary value. So the damages Oracle could collect is zero.

Although the jury did find that APIs could be copyrighted, it didn't decide the bigger issue. That is what constitutes fair use and did Google violate that? Fair use allows limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders.

And, despite what the jury found, the judge could still rule that application programming interface can't be copyrighted at all -- which would be far healthier for the software industry, since the software industry has been operating on this assumption forever. That is, it's ok to use another's APIs (APIs let one software program talk to another) so long as you don't go ahead and copy and paste the other software program, too.

Next up will be the patent infringement portion of this battle.

12 Massive Changes That Will Transform The Software Industry Within 5 Years (ORCL, GOOG, MSFT)

The software industry is going through the kind of perfect storm that only happens once ever 30 years.

The last time this happened, it created the giants of today, like Microsoft, Oracle and SAP. It also created massive new industries — like computer security software.

The same thing is happening now and in the next five years, the next crop of industry giants and new technologies will arise.

Cloud computing changes how companies buy software.

What's changing: Instead of spending a chunk of cash buying software licenses every three to five years, companies are buying subscriptions and getting their software delivered over the Internet. Most (but not all) enterprise software will eventually be delivered this way.

Who wins: Companies with cloud in their DNA like Salesforce.com, Google Apps and startups who deliver cloud-based point products (OnLive, Workday, Zendesk, etc.)

Who loses: Traditional software players like Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP. They are all investing heavily in cloud computing, but so far, none has made the transition in a significant way. We'll see if they can.

Bottoms-up marketing tactics change which software companies buy.

What's changing: Software is being bought in by the employees who use it instead of by IT professionals. IT folks call it "rogue" software, but those selling it that way call it "bottoms up" marketing.

When enough people use it, a company is "forced" to negotiate for an enterprise subscription to save money or get features that will make the product more secure and manageable.

Who wins: Any company selling directly to employees. This is how Microsoft SharePoint got so popular. Employees were buying it themselves. But services that make it easy for employees to share stuff, like Dropbox, Asana, Hootsuite, Evernote are also big winners.

Who loses: IT departments and sometimes their companies. There are no controls in place to make sure that employees aren't breaking rules like sharing confidential information, or downloading software that has viruses. Expect new technologies like desktop virtualization to rise in reaction (see next slide).

Desktop virtualization changes how companies deliver software.

What's changing: People want to work on their own devices and use software they like. Companies need to control software and protect important data. Desktop virtualization does this. It is like your entire hard drive — operating system, software, settings — delivered as a service over the Internet. It is often called Desktop as a Service (DaaS).

Who wins: Companies like Dell, Wipro, VMware, Red Hat, Citrix, and a whole bunch of new DaaS companies like Wanova, Dizzion, countless others.

Who loses: No one. Microsoft licenses Windows per device, so it doesn't lose money — though if enterprises aren't careful, it can cost them more than using a regular PC. However, DaaS requires a full-time network connection so isn't good for many employees, especially if they travel.

See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Happiness Leads To Riches, Not The Other Way Around, Millionaire CEO Says

The first thing you notice about Theresa Szczurek is how cheerful she is.

And rightfully so. She's been a multimillionaire since she sold her first company, Radish Communications Systems, for $40 million in 1996 — a quick six years after she and her husband started it.

She's now on her second startup, also called Radish Systems, which is growing fast and winning awards.

She's what anyone would call an over-achiever (two masters degrees and a PhD).

But what we love about Szczurek's story isn't so much the cool tech she's building with Radish (though it is cool — and we'll get to that in a sec) but the philosophy that got her there.

After she sold the first Radish, she wrote a best-selling book about her experience called "The Pursuit of Passionate Purpose." It shows people how to follow their inner glee to find success.

"Passion produces prosperity," she says. "I interviewed 80 people and found that what brings meaning and success are these two things: contribution and connection," she says.

People need to feel like their work is meaningful and helpful. People also need to feel like they are connected to the best parts of themselves and to a community.

Those things will "light your fire" and will keep it burning as you go through the ups and downs in your life and career. "It helps you feel more engaged and innovative, which is beneficial both to the company and the individual," she explains.

Szczurek and her husband Richard Davis started their careers at Bell Labs. Their passion for communication tech drove her to recreate Radish again (they were able to buy the name back) in Boulder, CO. Boulder is the warm-fuzziest place to launch a startup in the U.S., and a gorgeous place to live, too, if you can afford it (Szczurek can).

The first Radish was for the modem. It let data be transmitted during an ordinary phone call. It was licensed by Microsoft and others and became part of Windows.

The new Radish is doing the same thing for smartphones. It's a cloud app that allows data, images and video to be transferred during a phone call. It is sold to companies with call centers.

Here's how it works: At the call center, an agent is on the phone with a customer and the agent and drags and drop a photo, diagram, or video into the caller’s window and that customer can see that information. It's good for sales, technical help, anything where an agent wants to share visual info with the caller.

The new Radish is still an early-stage company, with nine employees and hoping to announce a $3 million Series A round soon. But it looks to be on its way. It just landed a deal with a big Cisco reseller named SPS and it has also racked up a number of innovation awards.

Don't miss: Boulder Is Utopia For Startups. Here's Who You Need To Know To Move There
