Both systems have dual monitors setups. I'm using RME analog to digital gear (8 analog with 8 channel DIO on each station) with optical interfacing to pipe multichannel digital audio between the two stations. All my mixing is done electronically so the only things I have on the desk are keyboards and the Mackie Big Nob for controlling volume to the studio speakers and switching between the two stations.

This is my portable rig. It's a SoundDevices 722 with two Quarterman omni microphones. I like this set-up because it's small, light and extremely high quality. The best part is I don't need microphone stands and I don't have to worry about the person I'm interviewing always moving back or away from his/her microphone during the interview. The interview 'connection' feels more real and less like a formal process with lots of gear staring them in the face.

I have a couple of small wireless Sennheiser microphones that I mainly use for video podcasting.

In video podcasting I'm using the Sony A1U HD video camera ...

and the Sony V1U HD video camera.
Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

Twitter

For those who are finding their way into Twitter my address is tparish

http://www.twitter.com/tparish

Enjoy
Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

Interview with Corey Booth - CIO of Securities and Exchange Commission

This will be posted on the EnterpriseLeadership.org site very shortly. I started with the last one listed on Talking Portraits with Rohit Bhargava, Vice President of Interactive Marketing for Ogilvy Public Relations.

Next one up is with Jeremy Hogan, Director of Business Development of Lulu.com. We talk about their learning experiences in applying various types of social media strategies to grow their business. Very good interview from a pragmatic perspective, especially if you're curious how a business actually uses social media to help it grow.

There are two more podcasts on the way. One of them is with Dave Evans of ClickZ on word-of-mouth advertising - what works and what doesn't.

I'll be posting a final podcast on the www.TalkingPortraits.com site so the subscribers will know to resubscribe at ITConversations. Or maybe I can figure out how to redirect them ... hmmm, that might be the way to go.

As always, send me your thoughts and idea for further podcasts.
Appreciatively
Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

My Latest Bio - What I've Been Up To

I was recently asked for a bio and realized I really needed to make mine more current. TalkingPortraits has been up for more than two years and covers a wide range of topics on technology and people, using an informal and thought-provoking style.

In the past, Tom was a volunteer audio producer for ITConversations. In 2005, Tom spoke at a SXSW panel on "The Future of Podcasting."

For the last two years, Tom has also been producing and hosting a weekly Podcast at EnterpriseLeadership, sponsored by BMC Software. To date, he has interviewed more than 70 C-level executives.

Additionally Tom has a social media consultancy, working with clients to produce audio and video podcasts with an emphasis on how to make shows both relevant and popular. One example is TalkBMC, a weekly show with more than 120 episodes and an audience in the thousands. This show, combined with Tom's strategy of blogging to accompany the Podcasts, has helped BMC Software create an entirely new connection with their clients on the web.

Tom started producing audio shows in 1998 with the Motorola Digital DNA Radio show for a global audience.

Tom has a studio in Austin, Texas, and has coached the following shows from start-up to their current popularity:

ShrinkPod - Interviews with leading experts in the field of mental health and psychiatry

ReadyRadio - for SportsCenterAustin.com, a physical therapy business

DBAzine - BMC Software show for database administrators

Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

Robert Scoble Interviews Doug Kaye on Changes at Gigavox

Check out the interview with Doug Kay of ITConversations (and Gigavox) in Doug's studio. It's in video, very casual and, well, just like being in his studio - phone rings and all. I liked it. Finally learned about Doug's background in audio. You'll learn more about the Levelator product with some tantalizing hints about potentially using it for audio in video files.

Note: If you haven't tried Levelator with your podcasts, you'll want to do some experimenting with it. RMS leveling is included in many audio software packages but they can be pretty tricky to set up correctly and consently. The Levelator is a small, free piece of software that will allow you to externally adjust the RMS level of your audio and then reimport it back into your audio editing software. It would be cool if/when they offer it as a VST plugin since practically all audio software editing packages allow you to add plugins from different vendors. This way you can adjust the RMS levels directly in the software package you use and be sure it's getting done correctly.

In the interview, you'll hear about a new service from Gigavox that will take your podcast file, automatically level it for you and assemble it with an intro and an outro, then post it out to whatever FTP server you use to host your podcasts. You just records the intros and spots, etc., separately, and their system assembles it for you and puts the finished file back. The cool thing is you can rerecord your advertising spots on a day-by-day basis and instantly change them on all the shows. This is a powerful tool for people who have shows with dozens or hundreds of episodes. This would give you a tidal wave of advertising strength.

Scoble did a fine job, as always, of gracefully leading the conversation along. I highly recommend you listen to this if you want to keep up with the leading-edge changes in Podcasting.

Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

SXSW 2007 - I'll be There

Ok it's almost that time again in Austin. It's called www.LeverageSocialMedia.com, and the title captures the purpose.

You know that I host the EnterpriseLeadership.org show, but you may not know my involvment in helping architect that site. I've had the opportunity to work with an amazing team of people at BMC.com to bring this project along. I've also worked with other communites: talk.bmc.com and the DBAzine.com site for database administrators.

Now that social media and social networks are moving into the mainstream, I figure it's time to broaden the dialogue. My plan for the new site is to do more than be a watchdog for new trends and startups. Seems like there are plenty of those kinds of blogs around. I'm interested in finding, reporting and reviewing practical insights. Dig into the people issues, business issues, outsourcing issues and, of course, the technology issues.

What makes social networks work and why do they fail? How do you create a vision for one and then actually execute it to hit your goals? What about benchmarks - what makes practical sense to benchmark in the area of social media? How do you create a strategy that will outsmart the competition - which is likely thinking the same thing? Most importantly, how do you initiate and then support marketing departments into this new channel of marketing?

After 3 years of working with clients on blogging, podcasting and various social media-based projects, I have a burning desire to get some of my thoughts circulating. More importantly, I'm interested in learning from others what they are seeing so we can collectively be more successful.

I have a podcast interview coming up soon with Rohit Bhargava, Vice President of Interactive Marketing for Ogilvy Public Relations of Ogilvypr.com. We're going to discuss the topic of social media optimization and social media trends for 2007.

This will be one of many interviews. In fact, to get things rolling I've already posted my interview of Kalivo and their HUB technology. If you want to get an early start on how to leverage social media - listen to the podcast.

These are the issues I think need more attention now for a business to leverage the technology of social networking and social media.

Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

"The Googe/YouTube Come-On" from Business Week

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_50/b4013027.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily

This is interesting and and sure hits on the right points that are hot now - should the big networks sue for copyright infringements or ... well maybe that visibility on YouTube has 'some merit' after all. Decisions decisions ...

We're in a funny transition now even with B2B and B2C marketing. Don't you think ... it's just in every conversation I hear now.

Blogging (audio/video) and social media optimization strategies with YouTube and Google Video 'appear' enticing but ... you can't measure the results.

So, you can't tell you management what the payoff is.

But on the other hand traditional marketing isn't working very well anymore ... but it's safe because it's familiar. Do it even it hurts I suppose.

But on the other hand as they look over their shoulder there is this tidal wave of change occurring that isn't measurable yet it's equally undeniable.

What to do ... ?

Tom
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

Creative Commons - What Is It and Why Should I Care?

Just saw this on www.revver.com and felt it was worthy of passing on.

Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

Review 'coming' for the SoundDevices 722 Digital Recorder

A few weeks ago I purchased a SoundDevices 722 and I've been so happy with it. It's expensive. We're talking $2k but it's all PRO. I wanted to actually use it for a few weeks at gigs on the road before talking about it. I'm mulling over the idea of using video for the review. As chief information officer at Austin Energy, Andres Carvallo takes that goal seriously. In fact, he spearheaded a revolutionary program to transform a jumble of outdated legacy systems into a streamlined IT operation. He is now helping the company transform its business model to offer a range of commodity power services and to build the systems to deliver them to customers. Listen as Carvallo doesn't mince words about running IT as a business and as a service provider.
Visit Http://wwww.TomParish.com

This is a short animation done by a number of ambitious people in Houston and Austin, led by Walter Stewart.

It's about the life and times of a chad.
