It's a full house for this week's episode, Pedro returns, Steve finally steps up to the challenge, and Marco and I are happy to have company. We start off by looking back at Benfica's win against Beira-Mar this past weekend. Among many things we discuss the worrisome tendency of allowing early goals, as we have now allowed early goals in our last three matches. Speaking of allowing early goals, we turn our attention to Artur and his sub-par moment of form, is it lack of competition, lack of focus, or perhaps Luisao's absence? We then take on Enzo Perez's adaptation to the "8" position. Staying with adaptations we turn to Melgarejo and wonder what happened to the big magnifying glass that was on him, he hasn't compromised our defense, but is that a result of skill or safe decisions on his part? Lastly we all take a crack at who should play up front when Cardozo comes back. With Lima's emergence, JJ's decision of who to play up front will be harder and harder. We examine the various partnerships, each players suitabilities, and the formations that will get the most out of each one of them. In the second segment, Pedro tells us about what he saw live at Estadio da Luz when Barca came to visit just last week. To conclude, we talk about the nearing elections taking place at the end of this month. One name has emerged to run against Luis Felipe Vieira - Rui Rangel. We don't know much about Mr Rangel, but we all agree that a change isn't always the best thing. Thanks For Listening

In this week's episode, Marco and I start off by talking about the events at Benfica's general assembly, where a group of fans contested Luis Felipe Vieira and called for his resignation, causing Benfica's president to leave under heavy security. With club elections taking place on the 26th, there is an emergent opposing movement to the current mandate, but no recognizable face or credible project has been made public. With the pressure mounting on the club's administration, only wins will tame the "angry mob", and that's what Benfica did when they traveled up north to face Pacos de Ferreira. New signing, Lima, was instrumental in the win, netting 2 goals and being the key figure of the match. Coincidentally a slip by porto allowed us to regain first place where we hold a goal average lead. We then looked at the Champions League clash against mighty Barcelona, where despite losing, and being dominated for the whole entire second half, Benfica has nothing to be ashamed of. Massive possession stats and the all too familiar tiki-taki style of the Catalans eventually did us in, as the fading legs, and the lack of possession and efficiency were the biggest factors for the negative result. Before moving on to the next topic we ponder on whether JJ will have to change his tactical set up, or if will make do with what he has at his disposal. In this episode, we breakdown Nacional da Madeira game.In a first half that showed how evident Garcia's absence is, it was the brilliance of Salvio, and the execution of Rodrigo and Cardozo that sealed the deal in the second half.
We followed up with transfer talk, (like there was any way we could avoid it), Javi Garcia leaving on the last day, and Witsel being swept away by the 40 million euros on Monday, as well as the Lima acquisition.

Last segment is all about the Champions League. Champions League Draw, Champions League schedule, Keys to making it to the next stage, as well as the domestic fixtures that surround the Champions League matchdays.

Between Flying scissor kicks and offside limbs, we breakdown this past weekend's blow out of Vitoria de Setubal. Rodrigo with the brace, Salvio grabs another one, Nolito and Perez, who got the start this week, also on the score sheet. Sure it was unfair, and not the best way to gauge the team's progress, but at least no one can point the finger at Melgarejo this time. After basking in the glory of a blow out, we delve into the Ola John issue, is he the next Capdevilla? Or is he our ace in training? we offer our conclusions. With 3 days left for transfer window to close, the speculation wheel continues to spin - Javi, Garay, Saviola, Cardozo, Ziegler,Eliseu, where will it stop? We also had time to look at the Champions League Pots, and see some of our possible opponents in this year's campaign, which will prove to be a lot more challenging than last year's. Finally we breeze through Benfica's next opponent at Estadio Da Luz, Nacional da Madeira. Nacional who is winless so far, has never beaten Benfica away from home. Type rest of the post here

With Pedro and Chris On this Episode... Benfica opens up the season against Braga and once again can't get the win on the first game of the season, 8 years now without a win in the first fixture. We take an in depth look at the game and how JJ set up the team. Surprisingly enough(or maybe not) the formula that had been used with a good degree of success during the pre-season was put aside to give way to a less used formation. Enzo and Martins who had shown themselves at a good level in the pre-season were left out in favor of Salvio and Rodrigo, two players with no minutes in the pre-season. New Season, same old JJ, as the blame for this tie has to fall squarely on his shoulders. Not even Melgarejo, who was directly involved with the two goals allowed can be blamed for this. The left back saga continues, Rui Costa was in Malaga to negotiate Eliseu, but came back empty handed. Benfica much rather have Juve's Ziegler on loan with option than to spen 3 million on a left back we so desperately need. Back after Holiday With Pedro and Marco On this Episode A quick run through the Real Madrid, Gil Vicente and Juventus friendlies. Benfica keeps this years' Eusebio Cup at home, after defeating a second line Real Madrid.It was all about the less used players versus Gil Vicente, and Mora rose to the top with 3 goals. Benfica closed out the week with a match against Italian champs Juventus. Cardozo put Benfica ahead in the dying minutes of the game, but a loss of focus allowed Juventus to tie the game in added time. The left back saga continues, players from a-z have been linked to Benfica, Eliseu is the latest one, but the names come fast an furious, some of them easier to pronounce others not so much. Salvio returns, as we all agree that had it been another player, we're pretty sure the fans would manifest their anger towards the decision to spend another crap load of money on yet another winger. No value has been announced by Benfica yet, but word is that Salvio might have gone from anywhere between 9 and 11.5 million. Roderick and Nelson Oliveira were loaned out to Deportivo de la Coruna, despite the ugly jerseys we wish them all the luck and hope that they can get enough playing time so that they can return. Some Witsel talk, does he stay or does he go? latest is that Coentrao wants to be involved in the deal and do the reverse of Witsel. Silly season at his best. With Pedro, Eric and Mike On this episode, We stay with the national team, as we wrap up the group stage by running down the Denmark and Holland game. Ronaldo has massive show up against Holland, but we can't give him all the credit. We select our Portuguese MVP of the group stage, as well as our surprise player. Who would have thought that Varela and Nelson Oliveira would be Bento's first options off the Bench? We discuss things that grabbed our attention during these first 3 games. Finally we wrap up the pod by previewing the Czech Republic game, and discussing some of the keys to a game where Portugal are favorites, and it's not the game from 1996 that will make us less favorites, yet, Portugal mus approach this game in a serious manner and continue their steady climb to the top. ** I apologize for the abrupt ending to the podcast. For the second night in a row I had problems with my audio recording software, 5 minutes were missing from the tail end of the podcast which i relaized during editing, but the important content is all there. thanks for listening

On this episode, We discuss Portugal's first game of their Euro 2012 campaign versus Germany. Paulo Bento's starting 11 and the team's game plan against one of the favorites of the tournament. We touch up on a multitude of topics including : The national anthem - to sing or not to sing. "Miguel" the player formerly known as Veloso. Ronaldo does his best Lady Gaga impression and changes looks for the second half.

We take a quick look at Bento's changes for the second half, Golden Boy Nelson Oliveira makes his major tournament debut, and does well, but should he be starting? Bento's last attempt to turn things around with Varela's substitution, and our one clear chance to tie the game.

In the second half, we look at Denmark, and the possible scenarios, that will allow Portugal into the next phase of the competition.

Domestic and European competition shortcomings, as well as questionable team management left a sour taste in our mouth, that not even the League Cup was able to take away. We wrap up by choosing our Best and Worst signing, best surprise, and revelation players of he season. National team - First preparation game against an opponent who should have been better chosen, regardless of the intentions by Paulo Bento. Once again we look at some of the players, who perhaps didn't deserve a call up, and wonder who would replace them.
