A lot has happened since our last update. Walls have been painted, plumbing and electricity finished. Equipment and furniture has been brought in, and staff members are already in the building training and getting used to their new home.

The Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast is just weeks away from opening, and we would like you to join us for a special open house to preview the facility! Activities include photos with the Tallahassee Memorial Super Kids - Ace and Tally - face painting, and tours of the new Emergency Center.

So, mark your calendars for Aug. 14 from 5 - 7 p.m! The physical address is 1260 Metropolitan Boulevard, right off Thomasville Rd. near the 1-10 exit. We hope to see you there!

Almost Done!

Construction of the Emergency Center-Northeast is almost completed! Landscaping, irrigation and paving are now complete, and interior finishes continue with flooring, paint, mill work, electrical and mechanical work, plumbing and fire protection.

We're hoping to get employees in the building and training soon and then have the facility open to the public late in the summer after all inspections have been completed.

We're making great progress on the new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast! It's looking more and more like a finished building each day.

The necessary inspections for the first floor have been completed, and the drywall is 50 percent done. We're expecting second floor inspections and drywall hanging to begin this week, and the third floor drywall is scheduled to start early February.

Reaching Milestones!

The Christmas and New Year holidays are notorious for slowing down projects, so we're excited that the construction of the new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast kept moving right along.

We're happy to announce that a construction milestone was recently achieved. We now have the foundation of a roof! The light-weight concrete on the roof deck has been poured. This allows for the roof to be finished within a couple of weeks and provides weather protection for finishing the fireproofing and starting sheet rock hanging.

The construction team will start hanging sheet rock room-by-room as elements like electrical wiring, data, medical gas, in-wall blocking, plumbing and head walls are inspected and verified as correct. Window frames have been installed on the north face second and third floors and will continue around to the east. Light gauge framing of the south screen wall has begun.

Soon, the construction team will focus both on grading and curbing at the west parking area and installation of the site fire line piping just outside the north face of the building.

Half Way There!

Construction of the Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast is half way completed! The walls and ceilings of all three floors are in process and the exterior framing and sheathing of the building is 99 percent completed. The west stairs have been completed, and the east stairs are 75 percent complete.

If you're in the area and have never had the luxury of seeing a concrete pour, there is one scheduled for the roof today! In preparation for the pour, the steel erection crews installed tube steel below the roof for support.

We can't wait until the outside of the building is completed and the inside work begins. Don't forget to check our "Watch Construction" page regularly for real-time construction photos of the emergency center!

New Aerial Shots!

Construction on the new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast continues to move forward. Here are some neat aerial shots to show you all the progress that has been made!

As you can see, the steel frame for the second floor is in process, and concrete slabs are expected to be poured this coming Thursday. When the second floor pour is completed, electrical and plumbing on the first floor level will begin.

Construction Moving Right Along!

Construction on the new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast is coming along great! Moving forward, we'll be updating the blog with photos of the construction so you can follow along with us.

The steel beams supporting the three floors of the new emergency center are mostly in place. The concrete structures to the left you see pictured are the elevator shafts, which were the first part of the new facility to be erected.

The utilities work for the building has started as well! Workers are busy installing the underground pipe systems, and the primary electrical power work will start soon.

Yesterday, TMH broke ground for the new freestanding emergency center at the crossroads of I-10 and Thomasville Road with a dramatic kabuki drop. Projected to open in May 2013, Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast is designed to handle most emergency situations, with special consideration for pediatric and geriatric patients.

“At TMH, we are excited about the expansion of our emergency services to include an off-campus, freestanding facility that focuses on delivering high quality, emergency services with a team of board certified emergency physicians,” said Mark O’Bryant, President & CEO, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

“Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast has special features to help our youngest and oldest patients as well as state-of-the-art concierge emergency medicine for all members of our Big Bend community,” said Dr. Albert Lee, MD, Chair, Tallahassee Memorial Medical Executive Committee.

For pediatric and geriatric patients, this facility offers a less stressful environment to seek emergency medical care. Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast features a separate entrance and interactive waiting area for children and their families. While dimmed lighting, low-glare flooring, and stretchers with thicker mattresses were selected to make geriatric patients more comfortable.

Kim Williams, Chair of the TMH Board of Directors and former Chair of the Economic Development Council of Tallahassee/Leon County, sees a boost to the local economy, “The new emergency center will create more than 150 jobs, including nursing, respiratory therapy, and security positions. TMH will also support the local economy with construction costs, including labor and materials, to complete this 45,000-square foot facility.”

This facility is also being designed, constructed, and operated according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards to reduce the center’s impact on the environment. TMH selected Clemons, Rutherford & Associates, Inc., a local Tallahassee firm that specializes in healthcare facilities, and FreemanWhite, Inc., the nation’s leading emergency department design consulting firm, in a joint partnership to design the area’s first freestanding emergency center.

TMH Improving Emergency Services with the Area’s First Freestanding Emergency Center

The unveiling of the new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center Northeast building’s concept design reveals an embracing structure, infusing modern elements that achieve both aesthetic and sustainable results.

“Design has the power to promote feelings of wellness and healing. The combined team of CRA and FreemanWhite sets the bar for innovation in their industry and will help to bring our vision to life, setting a new benchmark for improving comfort for all patients, while providing truly outstanding emergency care,” said Mark O’Bryant, President & CEO, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

“The preparatory mission of the Tallahassee Memorial leadership and emergency teams was to work with the architects to design a welcoming and healing environment, focusing on customized functionality for our pediatric and geriatric patients. We are excited about the future expansion of our emergency services to include an off-campus, freestanding facility that focuses on delivering high quality, emergency services for our patients in an exceptionally inviting environment,” said Freda Lyon, Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Services Administrator.

The building concept displays a pre-cast structure that is highlighted by areas of glass that denote the direction of entry and allows for excellent views from the interior. The main public entry view is open and inviting, both in material and form, producing a visual “embrace” for all who enter. The design includes a separate entrance into the pediatric emergency waiting room. In addition, the upper level model incorporates wood-like screening elements which would both deflect light in the night for the surrounding neighborhoods and reduce energy requirements by providing shade during daylight. Lastly, the north side of the building plans for a prominently lit marquee element that should be visible at any speed from the I-10 corridor.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare selected Clemons, Rutherford & Associates (CRA) and FreemanWhite, Inc. in a joint partnership to design the area’s first freestanding emergency center. Clemons, Rutherford & Associates is a local Tallahassee firm that specializes in healthcare and educational facilities. CRA has teamed with FreemanWhite, Inc., an emergency department design consulting firm that has completed over 200 emergency centers in the U.S. and is considered the national leader in ED design. FreemanWhite led the planning effort under the direction of Jon Huddy, Managing Principal, who authored the book Emergency Department Design: A Practical Guide to Planning for the Future published by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Tallahassee Memorial Announces Architect Selection for New Freestanding Emergency Center Northeast

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare has selected the team of Clemons, Rutherford & Associates (CRA) and FreemanWhite, Inc. to design the previously announced freestanding Emergency Center inside the Metropolitan Executive Center on Thomasville Road and I-10.

Clemons, Rutherford & Associates is a local Tallahassee firm that specializes in healthcare and educational facilities. CRA will be teaming with FreemanWhite, Inc., an emergency department design consulting firm that has completed over 200 emergency centers in the U.S. and is considered the national leader in ED design. FreemanWhite will lead the planning effort under the direction of Jon Huddy, Managing Principal, who authored the book Emergency Department Design: A Practical Guide to Planning for the Future published by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Clemons, Rutherford & Associates will be the lead Architect and will utilize local engineering services to deliver their respective disciplines. “The teaming of FreemanWhite, CRA and local engineering consultants combines national emergency center design experience with local, responsive, high-quality service in pursuit of developing a truly outstanding emergency care facility for our patients and their families,” said Jason Moore, Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, the lead executive in charge of construction.

The Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center-Northeast will be equipped to handle most emergency situations and built with special consideration for both pediatric patients, geriatric patients and their families.

This new facility will be designed with the community in mind, conveniently located with ample parking and featuring state-of-the-art, concierge emergency medicine with a separate pediatric entrance and waiting area and emergency areas tailored to meet the needs of senior patients. In collaboration with CRA and FreemanWhite, Inc., Tallahassee Memorial will be focused on creating an emergency center with a healing environment scientifically designed to reduce anxiety and improve comfort for all patients, while providing truly outstanding emergency care.

Update on Construction Activity for New Emergency Center – Northeast.

For those of you who read the Tallahassee Democrat, one of the more entertaining columns is Zing, which can be found on the Tallahassee Democrat editorial page. Anonymous readers can send in posts that are sometimes humorous and sometimes cynical, but always give a window to what our community is thinking.

Today in Zing, a reader posted the following comment: “If it takes TMH as long to build the proposed emergency center as it does for a patient to be served in the current one, most of us will never live to see it completed.”

I would like to thank this reader for making our point as to why the new free-standing Emergency Center should be built. Our wait-times are not significantly different, and maybe a little shorter, than those in most emergency centers around the country with the type of patient for whom we care in the Bixler Emergency Center. Trauma patients and a community demand for emergency psychiatric care slow down our processes while backing up care for the less critically ill and injured. The new, Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast will allow these less critical patients, especially pediatric and geriatric patients, to receive faster care in a facility designed to meet their specific needs.

As to the time it will take to complete this new Emergency Center, our colleagues are motivated to construct this facility with the same results as our recently completed Cancer Center, namely, ahead of schedule. Jason Moore and his team are hard at work to meet clear deadlines.

It is an exciting time to be at Tallahassee Memorial. The new Tallahassee Memorial Emergency Center - Northeast is just one of many projects underway to advance us to our World Class vision.

I am pleased to tell you about an exciting new project that will make TMH’s emergency care faster and more convenient than ever before while maintaining the same high level of clinical quality you have come to expect. The project is a new, freestanding Emergency Center specifically designed to meet the increasing demands of our growing Big Bend region. The new Emergency Center will be located at the Thomasville Road and I-10 interchange. It will be staffed by our outstanding TMH Emergency physicians, able to respond to emergency situations involving stroke, heart attack and other life threatening illnesses. A freestanding Emergency Center is not a new concept. Innovative health care systems around the country have developed similar centers to improve access and drive down wait times for those in critical need of emergency treatment.

With this new Emergency Center we will also be able to add new features that extend the specialized care of our pediatric intensive care and geriatric services. In fact, special emphasis will be placed upon the specific needs of pediatric and geriatric patients to increase their comfort and lessen their anxiety during treatment.
This includes a separate entrance and waiting area designed specifically for our pediatric patients. This specialized care for our pediatric and geriatric patients will coincide with the Emergency Center’s goal of delivering customized, concierge service to all.

All of us at TMH envision the new Northeast Emergency Center as a place of healing for patients and their families. Of course, saving lives is our focus at this new Emergency Center. When minutes count, the quicker you can get to the Emergency Center, the better. And we believe this new Emergency Center will be critical for people in our region who must drive many miles to reach emergency care.
