It’s Just Not the Moment

Winter has a reputation problem.

Every year, people respond in one of two ways:
they either pretend it isn’t happening, or they shut everything down until spring and hope for the best.

Both approaches tend to lead to the same outcome: rushed decisions later.

Because winter isn’t useless.
It’s just not a performance season.

And once you understand what winter is good for, you end up doing less work — and doing it better.

Let’s start with the uncomfortable truth

Not everything should be applied in winter.

If it’s freezing.
If it’s wet.
If the wood can’t stay dry long enough to absorb what you’re putting on it.

Pushing ahead anyway doesn’t make you proactive. It just makes you busy.

And busy is how people end up redoing work they thought they’d already finished.

Waiting, in those cases, isn’t procrastination.
It’s good judgment.

What winter actually gives you

Winter removes urgency.

There’s no illusion that everything has to happen right now. No pressure to “just squeeze it in” before something else takes over.

Which makes winter unusually good for one thing: sequencing.

This is the season to ask:
What actually needs protection?
What failed last year — and why?
What would I rather not be dealing with again in April?

They’re not exciting questions.
They’re the ones that prevent regret.

Preparation beats performance

Here’s something that’s obvious once you see it — and easy to miss if no one points it out:

Some of the best results come from treating wood before it’s installed, not after.

Once boards are fastened in place, half the surfaces are no longer accessible. Coverage becomes uneven. Corners get missed. Moisture finds the places you couldn’t reach.

Treating beforehand changes that.

That kind of sequencing often happens offsite — in a garage or workshop — long before a project ever sees daylight.

Which is why winter can quietly be useful.

Not because it’s the right time to apply everything — but because it’s the right time to set things up properly.

Winter also reveals what you missed

Some problems don’t stop just because it’s cold.

Moisture still moves.
Spores still wait.
Insects still overwinter in sheltered places.

Basements. Garages. Sheds. Stored lumber.

When everything else slows down, these are easier to notice — and easier to address before they become larger problems hidden behind growth, soil, or construction.

About climate (because it actually matters)

There isn’t one winter across North America.

Winter in Arizona is not winter in Ontario. Treating them the same causes problems.

Some regions can apply safely right now. Others absolutely shouldn’t.

The calendar doesn’t decide that.
Conditions do.

If your climate allows proper application, winter may be perfectly reasonable. If it doesn’t, winter still has value — just not the glossy, how-to-article kind.

The long game

Most people don’t regret waiting when waiting was the right call.

They regret sealing in moisture.
They regret rushing.
They regret having to do it twice.

Durability isn’t created by enthusiasm.
It’s created by timing.

A quieter definition of “ready”

Being ready doesn’t mean doing everything early.

It means removing friction from the moment when action does make sense.

Spring will arrive either way.
Winter gives you a choice.

Winter doesn’t ask you to do more.

It asks you to do things in the right order.

That’s usually how they last.

You wouldn’t soak your favorite wooden spoon in gasoline, would you? Probably not. But every day, we slather our cutting boards, tables, and countertops in chemicals we can’t even pronounce. And then we eat off them. Commercial wood cleaners often contain synthetic waxes, petroleum-based ingredients, and artificial fragrances that do more harm than good. Thankfully, there’s a better way.

At Tall Earth, we believe in safe, simple, and effective solutions that don’t compromise on performance. That’s why we’re sharing this easy, DIY natural wood cleaner and conditioner that we actually use in our own homes. It cleans, nourishes, and protects wood surfaces—without the toxic residues.

Your kitchen is a goldmine of small opportunities—opportunities to waste less, spend smarter, and make the most of what you already have. Yet, every day, food, money, and time slip through the cracks. What if a few simple shifts could change that?

1. Wilted Greens Aren’t Dead—They’re Just Sleeping

You reach for the lettuce, and it’s limp. The cilantro? Sad. But hold on—don’t toss them just yet. Drop them in a bowl of ice water for 10–15 minutes, and watch them come back to life. This simple trick works on kale, spinach, and even limp celery. Magic? No. Just hydration.

2. Your Expensive Produce Wash? You Don’t Need It

You don’t need a $10 bottle to clean your apples. Mix 4 cups of water with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Let your produce soak for a few minutes, then rinse under cold water. This simple mix removes pesticides and wax just as effectively, saving you money and keeping your food fresh.

3. Citrus Peels: The Secret Weapon for a Cleaner Home

Before you toss that lemon peel, think again. Drop citrus peels into a jar of white vinegar, let them steep for two weeks, and strain. You’ve just made a powerhouse natural cleaner—no chemicals, no artificial scents, just real, grease-cutting magic.

4. Fresh Herbs That Last Longer Than Your New Year’s Resolutions

Wilted parsley, gone-too-soon basil—frustrating, right? Treat them like flowers. Trim the ends, place them in a glass of water, and cover loosely with a plastic bag. Your herbs will last days—sometimes weeks—longer.

5. The Never-Ending Onion (and Other Kitchen Scraps That Regrow)

Green onions, lettuce, celery—you don’t have to keep buying them. Stick the root ends in a glass of water, let them sprout, then plant them in soil. Free food, on repeat.

6. Stop Tossing Leftover Herbs—Turn Them Into Instant Flavor Bombs

Chop those leftover herbs, mix them with olive oil, and freeze them in an ice cube tray. Next time you cook, pop a cube into your pan. Instant flavor, no extra effort.

7. Your Bread Isn’t Stale—It’s Just Misunderstood

Store it in a cloth or paper bag to slow down drying.

Revive it with a quick spritz of water and a few minutes in the oven.

Turn it into homemade croutons or breadcrumbs. Stale bread is just future deliciousness waiting to happen.

8. Cooking Oil: Use It More Than Once (Yes, Really)

Fried something? Don’t dump the oil. Let it cool, strain it through a coffee filter, and store it. Unless it smells off, it’s good for another round. But not all oils are created equal. Saturated and monounsaturated fats hold up best under heat and can be reused multiple times.

Best Oils for Reuse:

Tallow & Lard – Highly stable, great for frying.

Coconut Oil – Rich in saturated fat, resists oxidation.

Avocado Oil – High smoke point, strong stability.

Ghee (Clarified Butter) – No milk solids, making it resistant to burning.

Oils to Avoid Reusing:

Seed Oils (Canola, Soybean, Corn, Sunflower, Safflower, Grapeseed) – High in polyunsaturated fats, break down quickly.

Flaxseed Oil & Walnut Oil – Extremely sensitive to heat, best for cold use.

Sesame Oil (Unrefined) – Delicious but unstable under heat.

If you’re reusing oil, always strain it well and store it in a cool, dark place. When it smells off or starts smoking at lower temperatures, it’s time to discard it.

9. Your Kitchen, But Make It Smell Like a Cozy Cabin

No synthetic sprays needed. Just simmer a pot of water with citrus peels, cinnamon sticks, and a splash of vanilla extract. Want to take it up a notch? Drop in some star anise and cloves for a warm, spiced aroma that makes your home feel like a winter retreat. The best air freshener you’ve ever used—and it’s already in your pantry.

10. Give Your Wooden Cutting Boards a Little Love

Wood needs moisture, too. Instead of letting your cutting boards dry out and crack, rub them down with a bit of coconut oil or beeswax every few weeks. They’ll last longer, look better, and work harder.

Let’s Make the Most of What We Have

Small shifts. Big impact. What’s your favorite kitchen hack? Share it in the comments—because the best ideas are always the ones we share.

Whether this is your first time exploring these ideas or part of a growing tradition, we aim to provide practical, easy-to-implement tips to benefit your home, health, and planet.

You load up your dishwasher, press start, and let it work its magic. Or you toss your favorite sweater in the laundry and hope it comes out as soft and fresh-smelling as an alpine meadow (as promised by that marketing slogan). But have you ever stopped to think about what’s really in those commercial cleaning products? Spoiler alert: it might be more than you bargained for.

As a Tall Earth customer, we know you’re already interested in eco-safe, non-toxic solutions that are simple, effective, and easy to use. With that in mind, let’s explore how you can take your commitment to healthier living one step further by making your own non-toxic dishwasher and laundry detergents.

Why Go Homemade?

Safer for Your Health: Many commercial detergents contain toxins like phosphates, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. These aren’t just unnecessary — they’re potentially harmful. Fragrances, for instance, often contain phthalates, which can mess with your hormones. Artificial dyes? Think about those nuclear red “powerball” pods — they’re not just eye-searing but could also pose carcinogenic risks.

Many of these ingredients are new to the current generation, meaning the cleaning products of yesteryear that we grew up on may be very different from what our kids are exposed to today. The impact on their young, growing, maturing bodies is still largely unknown.

Eco-Friendly: When you use homemade solutions, you’re cutting out the nasty chemicals that end up in our waterways. That means less harm to aquatic ecosystems and a happier planet. Plus, you’re reducing packaging waste. Commercial detergents are often excessively packaged in plastic bottles, pods, and boxes. By making your own, you’ll cut back on single-use plastics and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Cost-Effective: A bottle of premium “eco-friendly” detergent can set you back $15 or more. Meanwhile, making your own costs just a few cents per load, and the ingredients stretch much further.

Residue-Free Living: Whatever you wash your clothes and dishes with doesn’t just rinse away. Detergent residues linger on your dishes (and by extension, your food) and seep into your clothing fibers, which sit against your skin all day. Making your own ensures you’re not inadvertently ingesting or absorbing harmful chemicals.

The Recipes

DIY Dishwasher Detergent

Say goodbye to chemical-laden pods and hello to sparkling dishes with this super-simple formula.

Ingredients:

1 cup washing soda

1 cup baking soda

½ cup citric acid (helps break down food particles and fights hard water spots)

½ cup kosher salt (works as a natural scrubbing agent and water softener)

Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oil (like lemon, tea tree, peppermint, or lavender) for a light, natural fragrance.

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients together in an airtight container.

Use 1 tablespoon per dishwasher load. For extra-large or particularly dirty loads, use 1½ to 2 tablespoons as needed.

For an extra rinse boost, add white vinegar to the rinse aid compartment.

DIY Laundry Detergent: Powder Option

Gentle enough for delicates yet tough on stains, this recipe is your new laundry go-to.

Ingredients:

1 bar castile soap or unscented natural soap made from vegetable oils (like olive or coconut) without synthetic additives, grated

1 cup washing soda

1 cup borax

Optional: A few drops of essential oil (like eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender) for scent.

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl until fully combined.

Store the detergent in a glass jar or any airtight container.

Use 1 tablespoon per load for high-efficiency machines (or 2 tablespoons for older non-HE machines).

DIY Laundry Detergent: Liquid Option

For those who prefer liquid detergents, this option is just as simple and effective.

Ingredients:

1 bar castile soap (or 1 cup liquid castile soap for a quicker alternative) or unscented natural soap, grated

1 cup washing soda

1 cup borax

4 cups hot water (to dissolve ingredients)

Additional water to fill a gallon-sized container

Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oil (like lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, or peppermint) for scent.

Instructions:

Dissolve the grated soap in 4 cups of hot water over medium heat, stirring until melted.

Add the washing soda and borax, stirring until fully dissolved.

Pour the mixture into a gallon-sized container and fill the rest of the container with warm water.

Shake well before each use. Use ¼ cup per load for high-efficiency machines (or ½ cup for older non-HE machines).

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Skeptical of Borax? Some people prefer to skip it due to debates about its safety. You can replace borax with baking soda in your laundry detergent if you’d like.

Hard Water? If you have hard water, increase the amount of citric acid in the dishwasher detergent for extra effectiveness.

Label Everything: Always label your containers so you don’t accidentally mistake your homemade dishwasher detergent for sugar. (It’s happened.)

The Hidden Costs of Commercial Detergents

Still not convinced? Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: what goes into store-bought detergents. Beyond the ingredients we’ve already discussed, these products often include:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): A known skin irritant.

Triclosan: Found in “antibacterial” detergents and linked to endocrine disruption.

Optical Brighteners: Chemicals designed to make clothes look cleaner but can cause allergic reactions and bioaccumulate in the environment.

Synthetic Fragrances: A cocktail of undisclosed chemicals that may include phthalates, which can interfere with hormonal balance.

Small Steps Toward Big Impact

Switching to homemade detergents is a simple way to reduce toxins in your home while saving money and minimizing your environmental footprint. It’s a small change, but one that contributes to a healthier lifestyle and a cleaner planet.

Are you ready to ditch the commercial stuff? With these DIY recipes in your arsenal, you’ll be scrubbing and sudsing your way to a greener future.

There’s a certain charm to well-loved wood. Whether it’s a hand-carved garden sculpture, a vintage grand piano, or a 100-year-old door, these items tell stories that no mass-produced counterpart ever could. But the enemies of treasured wood—insects, fungi, and rot—are less nostalgic and far more invasive. Enter Eco-Safe Wood Guard, your non-toxic, eco-conscious solution to keeping these cherished pieces intact for generations to come.

Let’s take a closer look at how two of our customers brought their beloved wood pieces back to life with Eco-Safe Wood Guard.

Patti’s Garden Bear: Adorable but Under Siege

Meet Patti’s wooden garden bear, a cheerful sentinel that’s stood in her backyard for years, waving warmly to all who pass. Unfortunately, its base has become a buffet for insects, leaving gaping wounds that threaten its stability.

When Patti reached out, she wasn’t sure if anything could save her bear from further damage. After assessing the situation, we recommended Eco-Safe Wood Guard for its ability to eliminate infestations and prevent future insect and fungal attacks.

Here’s what Patti did:

Prepped for Success: Patti brushed off loose debris with a stiff-bristle brush, vacuumed the crevices, and donned safety goggles for the task.

Applied Wood Guard: To maximize penetration, she submerged the bear’s base in a container of Wood Guard, ensuring the product reached deep into every crevice and insect tunnel.

Finished with Care: Patti painted the remaining surface to add extra protection, creating a defensive shield against future invaders.

The result? A garden bear ready to stand proud for many more seasons.

John’s Antique Door: History Under Threat

John’s 100-year-old hand-carved heart pine door is a work of art. With intricate floral designs and a patina that whispers of bygone eras, it’s the kind of piece that would make any wood lover swoon. But powderpost beetles had moved in, threatening its integrity.

John turned to Eco-Safe Wood Guard to stop the infestation in its tracks. By thoroughly treating the door’s surface and paying special attention to the beetles’ hideouts, John was able to preserve this heirloom for the next century. A follow-up note from John summed it up perfectly: “Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate you taking time to share your expert advice.”

Beyond Bears and Doors: A World of Possibilities

While Patti’s bear and John’s door are star examples, Eco-Safe Wood Guard has a wide range of uses. Here are just a few ideas for what you can protect:

Vintage grand pianos

Hand-carved furniture

Antique wooden chests

Original wood moldings and wainscotting

Historic wooden beams

Ornate sculptures

Outdoor wooden benches or gazebos

Precious heirloom picture frames

Whatever the piece, if it’s made of wood and holds value—emotional, aesthetic, or historical—Eco-Safe Wood Guard is up to the task.

Application Tips: Because Every Wood Piece Deserves a Spa Day

Using Eco-Safe Wood Guard is as simple as giving your wood item a well-deserved spa treatment. Here’s a quick guide:

Safety First: Wear eye protection and a mask if you’re dealing with sawdust or unknown particles.

Clean Thoroughly: Brush off debris and vacuum crevices to expose solid wood.

Apply Generously: Whether painting, soaking, or spraying, ensure full coverage, especially on damaged areas.

Let It Work Its Magic: Allow the product to dry completely. Any powdery white residue can be wiped clean or left for the elements to handle naturally.

For outdoor items, consider a soak or bath to ensure deep penetration. For indoor pieces, focus on precision to maintain their aesthetic.

Ready to Protect Your Treasures?

Eco-Safe Wood Guard isn’t just a product—it’s a promise to preserve the stories etched into your cherished wood pieces. Whether it’s a garden bear, an antique door, or a family heirloom, you can trust Eco-Safe Wood Guard to keep those memories safe from insects and decay.

Let's talk termites. Not the most glamorous of topics, but then again, neither is waking up one day to find that your beloved garden beds or the deck you've painstakingly maintained are being silently devoured from the inside out. Termites are the introverts of the insect world—quiet, persistent, and working diligently in the background while you're none the wiser.

The good news? Termites might be unstoppable workaholics, but you can outsmart them with a little proactive care. No need to panic. In fact, let's walk through how you can protect your wood structures—whether it's the door frame to your house or the raised garden beds you lovingly crafted—without the use of toxic chemicals that could harm your family, pets, or plants.

Termite Trouble: What Are You Really Up Against?

Termites aren't picky about the type of wood they munch on. Whether it's the baseboards in your living room or the corner post of your backyard fence, they're happy to feast wherever the conditions are right. These little creatures can cause an astonishing amount of damage in a short time, and the signs aren't always obvious.

Here's what to keep an eye out for:

Hollow-sounding wood (tap, tap… nothing? Probably termites).

Bubbling or peeling paint (because termites like to stay out of sight, often right behind that perfect paint job).

Mud tubes (think termite highways, only less charming).

Discarded wings (because termites are seasonal fashionistas and love to shed last season's wings).

Inside, Outside, Everywhere: Where Termites Love to Strike

Termites are equal-opportunity destroyers, which means they don't care if the wood is inside your home or outside in your garden. Decks, fences, pergolas, window frames, even your shed and beloved raised garden beds—nothing is off-limits. And while it's easy to get hyper-focused on your garden structures (we've all been there), it's important to remember that your home is equally at risk.

Indoor risk areas:

Window and door frames (especially older ones).

Baseboards and flooring.

Wooden beams and supports.

Outdoor risk areas:

Garden beds, especially those made from untreated wood.

Fences, decks, sheds, and outdoor furniture.

Pergolas, trellises, and any other structure exposed to the elements.

Protecting Wood Structures: A Year-Round Effort

Whether you're in peak gardening season or hunkering down for winter, termites are a year-round problem. The key to protecting your wood structures is regular inspection, good maintenance habits, and choosing the right wood treatment—something that's effective but eco-safe (for everyone except the insects).

Pro tip: Maintaining your garden doesn't stop with the plants. If termites are left to their own devices, they'll turn your beautiful garden bed into a very expensive buffet. ECO-SAFE Wood Guard, can help preserve your wood from termites and the elements, all without the worry of harmful chemicals leaching into your soil. Think of it as long-term protection for your long-term investment.

Taking Action: Remedial Solutions for Existing Termite Infestations

While prevention is the best defense against termites, sometimes an infestation catches us off guard. If you find yourself facing an active termite problem, it's crucial to take immediate and effective action. ECO-SAFE Wood Guard isn't just a preventative solution; it's also a powerful ally in combating existing termite colonies.

Effective Remediation with Wood Guard:

Direct Treatment: Wood Guard can be applied directly to infested areas, where its formula penetrates deep into the wood, targeting termites where they live and breed. It halts the progression of damage by eliminating active termites and preventing further decay.

Safety First: Unlike many harsh chemical treatments that require you to vacate your home, Wood Guard offers a non-toxic alternative that ensures you can treat termite issues without worrying about harmful side effects to your family or pets.

Long-Term Protection: After addressing the immediate termite activity, Wood Guard continues to protect your wood from future invasions. Consider it as not only solving your current problem but also fortifying your home against future threats.

When to Seek Professional Advice: If the infestation is widespread or located in hard-to-reach areas, it might be necessary to consult with a pest control professional to ensure complete eradication. Wood Guard can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan, providing a safer and environmentally friendly option that professionals can incorporate into their methods.

Customer Experiences: Tried and True

While we hate yo have termites in the first place,, the company's support and communication always exceeds my expectations- we are thankful for them indeed many times over! - Marc H.

A Final Thought: Proactivity Over Panic

Here's the thing about termites: they're predictable. They do what they do best—chewing through wood like it's a 24/7 all-you-can-eat buffet. The real question is, what are you going to do about it? By taking simple steps to protect your wood structures, whether inside or outside, you're not just reacting to the problem—you're preventing it.

So before termites quietly move in, give your wood structures the care they deserve. Your home, garden, and wallet will thank you.

Alaska’s vast wilderness and extreme weather create unique challenges for those who live, work, and build in the state. From freezing temperatures to rugged terrain, the environment demands products that can withstand the harshest conditions. That’s why we’re proud to share how some of our customers are using Tall Earth products to protect their homes and structures in Alaska. These stories not only highlight the durability and effectiveness of our ECO-SAFE solutions but also showcase the dedication of our customers to preserving the natural beauty of their surroundings.

Grayson's Story: Building Awareness and Resilience in the Tundra

Grayson, a seasonal commercial salmon fisherman, knows all too well the challenges of maintaining a cabin in the remote wilds of Alaska. With freezing temperatures that can ruin most products left over the winter, Grayson turned to Tall Earth’s ECO-SAFE Wood Treatment for a solution.

"I painted Tall Earth all over the underpinnings and floor joists as they are in direct contact and near to the tundra respectively. I keep a packet up there at all times. It’s great because freezing ruins all products with liquid up there if left over the winter. The powder is the perfect solution."

But Grayson’s commitment to eco-safe products doesn’t stop at his own cabin. Understanding the hesitation some people have towards adopting eco-friendly solutions, he’s taken it upon himself to gift Tall Earth products to others, helping them take the first step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

"I have found with these eco-friendly items, folks are hesitant to adopt them because they lack direct exposure. I have taken to purchasing these products for those people in hopes of getting the ball rolling. Thanks for keeping this product going."

Grayson’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of both resilience and community in the quest for sustainability. By choosing ECO-SAFE solutions for his cabin and encouraging others to do the same, Grayson is not only protecting his home but also fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Robert’s Story: Preserving Tradition with a Modern Twist

In another corner of Alaska, Robert is embarking on a project close to his heart—building a large, two-story log cabin for his family. Unlike the typical Alaskan cabins that require frequent staining to maintain their golden hue, Robert has a different vision.
Gardens are more than just a space for growing plants—they can be thriving ecosystems that support local wildlife. By transforming your garden into a haven for birds, butterflies, and other creatures, you not only enhance its beauty but also contribute to the well-being of your local environment. Here's how to create a wildlife-friendly garden that bursts with life and offers endless entertainment and educational opportunities.

1. Bird Feeders: A Welcome Feast for Feathered Friends

Bird feeders are a fantastic way to attract a variety of birds to your garden. Whether you choose seed feeders, suet feeders, or nectar feeders for hummingbirds, these simple additions can turn your garden into a bustling aviary.

Placement: Place feeders in safe locations, away from predators, and near cover where birds can retreat if they feel threatened.

Variety: Offer a range of food types to attract different bird species. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, and mealworms can attract a diverse group of birds.

Pro Tip: Use Eco-Safe Wood Treatment on your bird feeders to protect them from the elements while ensuring they remain safe for the birds.

2. Butterfly-Friendly Plants: A Nectar Haven

Butterflies add a magical touch to any garden with their colorful wings and delicate flight. To attract these enchanting insects, plant a variety of nectar-rich flowers.

Native Plants: Choose native plants that provide nectar and serve as host plants for caterpillars. Examples include milkweed for monarchs and parsley for swallowtails.

Continuous Bloom: Plan your garden so something is always in bloom from spring through fall. This ensures a steady food source for butterflies throughout the seasons.

Pro Tip: Create a butterfly puddling station by filling a shallow dish with sand and moistening it. Butterflies will use this spot to drink water and absorb minerals.

3. Small Water Features: A Refreshing Oasis

Water is essential for wildlife. Small water features like birdbaths, ponds, or even a simple dish of water can attract a variety of creatures, from birds and butterflies to frogs and dragonflies.

Maintenance: Keep water features clean and fresh to prevent the spread of disease and discourage mosquitoes.

Variety: Include shallow areas and gently sloping sides in ponds to allow easy access for smaller creatures.

Pro Tip: Add a solar-powered bubbler or fountain to your birdbath to keep the water moving, which can attract more wildlife and prevent stagnation.

4. Shelter and Habitat: A Safe Haven

Providing shelter is crucial for attracting and sustaining wildlife. Birdhouses, bat boxes, and brush piles offer safe places for animals to nest and rest.

Birdhouses: Place birdhouses in quiet, sheltered locations. Different species have specific preferences for house dimensions and entrance hole sizes.

Brush Piles: Create piles of branches and leaves to provide cover for small mammals, reptiles, and insects.

Pro Tip: Use Eco-Safe Wood Treatment on birdhouses and feeders to ensure they remain safe and durable, offering long-lasting homes for wildlife.

5. Plant Diversity: A Balanced Ecosystem

A diverse garden supports a wider range of wildlife. Mix flowering plants, shrubs, and trees to create layers of habitat and food sources.

Pollinators: Include a variety of plants that bloom at different times to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Fruits and Seeds: Plant trees and shrubs that produce berries and seeds to provide food for birds and other animals.

Pro Tip: Avoid using pesticides and chemicals in your garden. Opt for natural pest control methods to keep your garden safe for all its inhabitants.

Conclusion

Transforming your garden into a wildlife haven not only benefits the local ecosystem but also enriches your outdoor experience. Watching birds flutter to feeders, butterflies dance among flowers, and frogs leap into ponds can bring endless joy and a sense of connection to nature. With thoughtful planning and a commitment to eco-friendly practices, your garden can become a sanctuary for wildlife and a source of wonder for you and your family.

Pro Tip: Remember to use Eco-Safe Wood Treatment on all your garden structures to keep them safe and inviting for wildlife. With proper care, your birdhouses and feeders will stand the test of time, providing enjoyment for many years to come.

Embrace the beauty of nature and create a vibrant, life-filled garden that both you and the local wildlife can enjoy. Happy gardening!

Introduction

Did you know that one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators like bees? These little workers play a crucial role in our ecosystem, but populations of wild pollinators are declining. The good news is that you can help! By creating a bee-friendly garden, you can provide a haven for these essential creatures while also enjoying a vibrant, flourishing garden.

Why Bees Matter

Bees are powerhouse pollinators, responsible for pollinating a wide variety of plants, including many fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Without them, our food supply would be in jeopardy. Bees also support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for countless other wildlife species.

Benefits of a Bee-Friendly Garden

Creating a bee-friendly garden offers numerous benefits:

Enhanced Pollination: More bees mean more pollination, which leads to healthier plants and better crop yields.

Biodiversity: A garden that attracts bees often attracts other beneficial insects and wildlife, contributing to a balanced ecosystem.

Natural Beauty: Bee-friendly plants are often beautiful, adding color and variety to your garden.

Environmental Impact: Supporting bee populations helps combat their decline, contributing to global conservation efforts.

Steps to Create a Bee-Friendly Garden

1. Choose the Right Plants

Select a variety of plants that provide nectar and pollen. Native plants are often the best choice as they are well adapted to your local environment and are familiar to local bee species. Here are some great options:

Wildflowers: Coneflowers, Black-eyed Susans, and Sunflowers

Herbs: Lavender, Sage, and Mint

Shrubs: Butterfly Bush, Blueberry Bushes, and Honeysuckle

Trees: Fruit trees like apple and cherry, as well as willow and maple trees

2. Plan for Continuous Bloom

To keep bees coming to your garden throughout the growing season, plant a variety of flowers that bloom at different times. Aim to have something in bloom from early spring to late fall.

3. Provide Water Sources

Bees need water to drink and to cool their hives. Provide a shallow water source, such as a birdbath with stones for bees to land on. Refresh the water regularly to keep it clean.

4. Avoid Pesticides

Chemical pesticides can be harmful to bees. Opt for organic gardening methods and natural pest control solutions. If you must use pesticides, choose bee-friendly options and apply them in the evening when bees are less active.

5. Create Bee Habitats

In addition to flowers, bees need places to nest. Leave some areas of bare ground for ground-nesting bees and consider installing bee hotels for solitary bees. Dead wood and plant stems also provide nesting sites for various bee species.

6. Educate and Advocate

Spread the word about the importance of bees and how others can create bee-friendly spaces. The more people involved in supporting bees, the bigger the impact we can make.

Life happens. Sometimes, the dream of a flourishing garden slips through the cracks of a busy schedule. Maybe you just moved to a new place, or perhaps a storm (or some particularly naughty bunnies) decimated your carefully planned plot. But guess what? It's not too late to get your hands dirty and start planting!

Even at this time of year, there's plenty you can do to create a beautiful, bountiful raised garden bed. Let's dive into what you can still plant, some creative ideas for your garden, and how to build that perfect raised bed to get things started.

What to Plant Now

You might think it's too late in the season, but there's still a range of plants that can thrive if you start now. Here are some ideas:

Edible Plants:

Leafy Greens: Spinach, arugula, and kale can still be planted and harvested well into the fall.

Root Vegetables: Radishes, beets, and carrots are quick growers and perfect for late-season planting.

Herbs: Parsley, cilantro, and chives can add a fresh touch to your fall meals.

Decorative Plants:

Pansies and Violas: These hardy flowers can withstand cooler temperatures and add a splash of color.

Ornamental Kale and Cabbage: Not only do they look great, but they're also edible!

Building Your Raised Garden Bed

Starting fresh or rebuilding after a setback? Here's how to create a raised garden bed that's both functional and beautiful:

Materials You'll Need:

Untreated wood (cedar is great, but our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment can make even fir a safe choice)

Screws or nails

Soil mix (a good blend of compost, peat moss, and vermiculite)

Optional: Hardware cloth or landscape fabric for the base

Step-by-Step Guide:

Choose Your Spot: Find a sunny location that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day.

Measure and Cut Wood: Decide on the size of your bed (4x4 feet is a good start) and cut your wood accordingly.

Treat the Wood: Use Tall Earth's Eco-Safe Wood Treatment to protect and preserve the wood. This treatment is non-toxic and perfect for garden beds.

Assemble the Frame: Use screws or nails to secure the corners, making sure everything is square and level.

Prepare the Ground: Clear the area of grass and weeds. Lay down hardware cloth if you have gopher issues, or landscape fabric to prevent weeds.

Fill with Soil: Mix your soil components together and fill the bed, leaving a couple of inches at the top.

Plant Away: Follow our planting suggestions and get your garden started!

Big box stores offered solutions aplenty, but none that you’d want anywhere near your carrot sticks.

At Tall Earth, we believe in the power of transformation—not just for wood, but in our relationships with our valued customers. Today, we're excited to share a story from Sonoma, CA, where our customer Rob embarked on a journey to rejuvenate his redwood fence using our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment. Along the way, not everything went as planned, but the beauty of transformation lies not just in the final result, but in the process and the people who help us get there.

Eco-Safe, Eco-Strong
Our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment stands out for its commitment to safety and the environment. Made from naturally derived ingredients, it ensures robust protection against decay and weathering without harmful chemicals. This treatment embodies our dedication to sustainable living, offering a way to protect your outdoor spaces and the planet simultaneously.

Rob's Experience
Rob's journey with us began with a simple goal: to protect and beautify his cherished fence. Despite a hiccup in shipping—which we promptly addressed—Rob's understanding and patience exemplified the spirit of community and cooperation we cherish. He was generous and collaborative, helping us ensure everything was set right, reflecting the very essence of what we strive for at Tall Earth.

The Transformation Process:

Before and During Treatment: The first photo shows Rob's fence half untreated and half freshly treated, with the treated side wet and dark, as the patina stain begins its work.

After Treatment - Different Stages: The second photo illustrates the transformation with the previously untreated portion now treated and dried but still showing a hint of green as it hasn't fully matured. Meanwhile, the initially treated side has begun to mature into a lovely silvery gray, which will only get better over time.

Various Stages from a Different Angle: The third photo captures different parts of the fence at various stages—untreated, treated but wet, treated but dry and green, and treated but dry and silver-gray, showcasing the dynamic process of wood transformation.

Why Choose Tall Earth?
Choosing our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment means more than just applying a product; it's about embracing a philosophy of care—for our homes, our environment, and our community. Rob's experience reminds us that we're all in this together, supporting one another as we make choices that contribute to a healthier planet.

Rob's fence is not just a structure; it's a testament to what we can achieve when we work together and choose responsibly. It stands more beautiful and stronger, much like our relationship with each customer who joins us on this journey.

Inspired by Rob's story?
We're delighted to announce our presence in beautiful Africa!

After a few years of occasional sales to customers in several African countries, we finally caught the attention of some national parks authorities in the Congo. This NGO recognized the value of our non-toxic Eco-Safe Wood Guard for the prevention and treatment of termites in structures built deep in the rainforest. In this case it was for extensive use in a lodge built on land designated for gorilla conservation and research.

Since that time, we've made further inroads with more parks authorities as well as private stakeholders in similar projects, and we hope to contribute significantly to the green and eco-conscious building movement across the continent.
We received this lovely message from our customer Paul...

"Hello to you, I was a client of yours last year and I wanted to say that I'm very satisfied with your product. It was easy to apply and the results are really great. I was thinking of you today because one of my neighbors is building a barn and I highly recommended your product. I hope he will follow my advice. Here are some pictures of the results on my house..."

What a gorgeous place! The home is large and could be imposing, but the natural wood finish imparted by our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment and Weathered Wood Finish definitely help to keep it integrated into the surrounding forest. We love the details... the steep rake of the storage shed roof, the two tone paneling, the multicolored trim above the window bank, the tall outdoor chiminea, the watercraft storage, the wagon wheel perched next to the red front door.

It's truly a special property, Paul, thank you for sharing these pictures with us! We're so happy to have been a part of your project.

This letter from our customer, Bethany, speaks for itself...

"Dear Tall Earth,

I just wanted to write to express my ever growing, intense gratitude and admiration for your products.

About three years ago my partner and I bought a small 800 square foot home for our family. We had it inspected and even paid the extra $700 for the mold test. I had friends in VA who lost a home to mold and didn't want that to be our story. Somehow despite our best efforts we bought a "mold house." Three weeks after moving I was removing wood paneling in a pantry we were relocating and found black mold growing 5 feet up the wall. We soon discovered it was everywhere. Every wall, every sill plate, even the insulation and sheathing. We had spent almost all our savings on the down payment and buying the house, but have had no choice but to take it back to the studs and rebuild. We have done this in stages, attacking the walls and mold where it was the worst and leaving the walls that weren't showing it growing to be dealt with later when they did.

Early on in the process I learned about Wood Guard from a blog and figured, we might as well give a shot. So I bought a bag. Treated some 2x4's and left them on the concrete floor to see if they would mold or grow mildew. They didn't. Since that time every board in our house has been Wood Guarded. Every bookcase, every cabinet we've built, every chair or stool that enters. This summer has truly put the product to the test. With so much rain, mold started growing on the few remaining original walls in the house that we hadn't yet replaced. And so we are gutting again and rebuilding slowly. But the most amazing, most wonderful news is that not a single piece of wood that I have Wood Guarded is growing mold. I cannot begin to explain how much this product is truly saving our home and I could not be more grateful. I cannot count how many bags we have bought or received as birthday and Christmas presents. There is still so much to be done on our home, but I know we will win and have a mold free home--in no small part and probably largely because of you guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

We know that it's a sincere challenge to find eco-friendly, non-toxic options for these kinds of tricky, sticky situations, and even more so when on a budget and hiring a professional may be completely out of reach. We feel so grateful to have been a part of Bethany's journey to creating a safe and healthy home for her family. That her friends chipped in by gifting them Tall Earth product is especially sweet :)

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Bethany, and we wish your family many years of happiness in your home!

The crisp autumn air is here, marked by that earthy scent, and brisk winds that make you realize your scarf still lingers in the hall closet. It's unmistakably autumn! We imagine ourselves cozying up around a wood stove, in a perfectly charming cabin in the woods...

Today, we're thrilled to showcase some photos shared by one of our customers, Dale. His rustic log cabin, still being completed, is nestled in a Wisconsin forest, and is a picture of timeless natural beauty.

Distinguished by its sharply peaked roof, this cabin is a testament to the enduring charm of traditional timber in home design. Dale chose to treat it with two of our trusted products: Eco-Safe Wood Treatment and Eco-Safe Wood Guard.

Our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment is a versatile protector and stain that evens out wood color and imparts a lovely silver-grey finish. It gives the cabin a weathered look that blends seamlessly into the landscape, whether it's a new build or an addition to an existing property.

Meanwhile, our Wood Guard is a potent defender against rot, fungi, and wood-boring insects. Whether used preventatively or to tackle an existing infestation, it ensures that Dale's cabin remains in great shape.

Our products are designed to preserve your cabin's beauty and durability, making it a lasting part of the Wisconsin forest scene.

We were delighted to receive these pics from a long time customer who was making some changes to her lovely west coast property.

The deck, previously treated with Eco-Safe Wood Treatment has been reconfigured, and now includes a mix of newer and older boards. Usually, this poses a problem as the new boards would stick out like a sore thumb. However, by using our treatment, the new boards blend in almost imperceptibly! Any variations will even out in a matter of weeks, not years.

The entire structure was also treated with Eco-Safe Wood Guard to provide additional protection against rot, decay and wood-boring insects.

The fence is a new build altogether, treated with Weathered Wood Finish. The cedar garden bed is new, too, and treated to match.

We really love the clean lines and generous proportions of this deck, and the open railing leaves the sightlines on this beautiful property nearly uninterrupted.

Thank you to our customer for sharing these details with us, and we hope it inspires you, dear reader, as you plan your own backyard oasis :)

Back in March, our dear customer Louise wrote us a very sweet note to tell us how much she loved our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment, having first discovered it some years ago when setting up her beehive, and then went on to use the treatment to protect and beautify all of her garden projects. She loved the ease of use, the rot-resistance, the patina stain, and that it's a non-toxic product. You can find that post here :)

We invited her to follow up with us when her garden was in bloom, and did she ever deliver! Bursting with life, these pictures are as delicious to look at as the bounty of this organic garden must be to eat. We're happy to be a little part of it.

"I recommend your products to everyone I know! It's the only thing that keeps wood from breaking down into mush in a few years, as we have a pretty harsh climate where I live in Arizona, with wet freezing weather, hot super-dry weather, and everything in between (except hurricanes). Our area has the record for the largest tornado outbreak west of the Mississippi River!"

So says Bobby, our long-time customer who, over the years, has used our Eco-Safe Wood Treatment on his beehives, raised garden beds, and most recently the lovely storage shed pictured below. It's been nicknamed "The Black Hole" because it's bigger on the inside than you'd expect :)

We especially love the roof overhang that creates a mini-porch, the little brick garden bed that's integrated into the foundation, and the unmilled logs used for the structural support poles, which are harvested from the property itself! Which brings me to another consideration that's worth making when building projects like this...

Using on-site treatments like Tall Earth products allows for the use of local wood, from local sawmills, as opposed to factory-treated lumber that is not only typically toxic itself, but then has the spillover impact of waste chemicals being dumped or leached into the environment and waterways, and of course the additional carbon footprint of transport to and from distant factory settings.

In Bobby's case, he used local ponderosa sourced from a sawmill only 5 miles from his property, with some of the trim being local white fir.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Bobby, and thank you for all the referrals you've made to us over the years, too. There's no greater mark of a satisfied customer :)

Are you considering a similar build or have you done something like this? Did you find the plans online? Are you building it or have you contracted a local builder? We'd love to hear from you, too!

Here at Tall Earth we recently had a customer, Jennie, reach out to us, asking how to best treat a 40 year old wooden sandbox - it was, in fact, the very sandbox that she herself had played in as a child! She wanted to give it new life, and to have it enjoyed by her own little ones.

Of all the wide variety of unique and interesting projects our customers have shared with us, an heirloom sandbox was one I hadn't seen before!

Jennie and I had a brief and lovely exchange by email, I recommended a combination of Eco-Safe Wood Treatment and Eco-Safe Wood Guard to provide broad-spectrum protection that would be utterly safe around kids, and we chatted about some small construction modifications and siting for the box.

Naturally, I thought of the sandbox that I myself had built many years ago for my kids, which was also Tall Earth treated of course :)

A sandbox makes for a wonderful play structure - fairly inexpensive, low maintenance, encourages creativity and time outdoors, keeps a little one busy forever, and brings us back into contact with nature and natural elements… with our fingers and between our toes.

I was happy to find that the plans for the sandbox I built are still available online here. This neat design incorporates a lid that folds open into two integrated benches, which is a cool little feature, but also makes it comfortable for adults to get in on the action, too. It's pretty easy to build, I'd consider it a beginner's level project. If you're even thinking about it - just go for it! And send us pictures when it's built!

We've seen some really awesome natural and wood-based playground structures being treated with Tall Earth products. Parents, schools and municipalities all know that it's so important to use non-toxic treatments in spaces where kids are at play, physically interacting with all the surfaces, and then probably licking their dirty hands! With non-toxic treatments, there's no worry, just enjoyment of these sweet moments of summer play.

This magnificent tower could house a knight guarding a castle, a singing Rapunzel, or a ninja training in a secret forest camp.

If heirloom tomatoes are more your speed than heirloom sandboxes, Tall Earth Eco-Safe Wood Treatment makes a great treatment for raised vegetable gardens and vegtrugs, too ;)

Whatever wood-based project you've got planned, we hope you'll include our treatments as part of your process to create sustainably and safely.

Jennie, if you're reading this, please send us photos of your sandbox once it's all done!

Tall Earth Wedding Dreams Come True

Submitted by Tall Earthling Tony P.

Back in May, my daughter Emily asked me to build an arbor for her upcoming wedding on 9/23/17. I built one out of Western Cedar but wanted that beautiful weathered grey look. I knew that it would never happen naturally in the 4 months that we had.

I spent some time looking for products that would accelerate the natural aging process without staining or painting. I lucked upon your web site and decided to try both your Eco-Safe Wood Treatment and your Weathered Wood Finish. I tested both on scrap pieces of the Cedar and while both produced beautiful grey patinas on the samples. Either one would have been a suitable choice, but I ultimately decided on the Eco-Safe Wood Treatment.

The before and after pictures are from 5/7/17 and 5/16/17 respectively but the Eco-Safe Wood Treatment was applied on 5/13/17. The grey in the after picture is only 3 days after application. The arbor continued to turn grey in the sun for the balance of the 4 months, and on her wedding day, it looked like it had been in the sun for years!

I simple could not have been happier with my choice. The wedding pictures are of my daughter and her new husband Jeremy!

A few years ago, we were fortunate to get to know John, from Indiana.
Circling back to 2016, we find John 13 years into enjoying his retirement, having found a little patch of heaven to call his own, deep in a National Forest. A sweet little house, a large garage and workshop, and a few outbuildings made up the workings of a sleepy little homestead, surrounded by majestic 100’ tall trees. Everything was going according to plan for John. Until it all went up in smoke - literally. Devastated by a fire, he lost everything on the property in April of 2016.

But on the other side of that despair, John found that he hadn’t lost his will, his creativity, his spirited nature, and his belief that “everything is possible”. Fuelled by this sentiment, John went on to start building a reimagined, simpler homestead, a property he dubbed, “The Possibilitist's Place”.

Leaning into the goodwill of neighbors and local tradespeople, John found a way forward! We’re very sure that his infectiously good-natured attitude played a big part in the redevelopment of the property into a place of peace for John and his friends.

We’re proud to have been an integral part of this project for John. He’s extensively used Tall Earth products to treat the new wood structures, instantly providing an aged patina that makes them look like they’ve been there for years, nestled amongst the tulip trees.

In this recent video, John details the layout of the property, including some additional structures still awaiting Tall Earth treatment. (John, as of this writing, your new product is on the way!)

John was kind enough to send us some photos of the newer structures on his property, and 6 years later you can see that they look so lovely:

However, our favorite photo is a gift from John that we’d like to share with all of you - it captures his philosophy beautifully:

Around here we like to get our hands dirty. We are makers and creators, DIY-ers and doers. As a family, we like to bring the outdoors in whenever we can, to help us all stay mindful of our connection to Mother Earth. We keep a little nature table in our home, an altar of sorts with treasures from our hikes and gifts we find in our own backyard. Every season we invite the little hands in our house to help us create adornments that are made from natural materials, or re-purposed items. Here are some of our very favorite conscious crafts for Spring.

Natural Dyed Eggs Full disclosure - the amount of curing time for some of these will really test the patience of your little ones, so this might be better for your older kids, or for you adults. It's a built in science lesson and a study in color and this is possibly the most comprehensive tutorial I've found on the web: http://www.justshortofcrazy.com/natural-dyed-easter-eggs/

Egg Seed Starters This is so cute, it will totally appeal to younger kids. I'd imagine you could just start any kind of seed this way, and transplant them when they grow hearty enough. I think it would be a really sweet way to start an herb garden too. If you aren't into the plastic eyes, you could draw your own. http://nurturestore.co.uk/eggheads-with-cress-hair

A Garden of Their Own Up here in the chilly north, we'll have to wait until May to try this one, but for you more southerly folks, here's a very sweet way to get the kids into gardening. With their very own garden space for sensory play, they'll become proud stewards of the environment, and soon you'll have eager helpers to tackle the outdoor chores. Here's a garden to play with indoors or out: http://frugalfun4boys.com/2013/03/22/plant-a-garden-for-imaginative-play/ And a little corner of your yard that becomes just for them: http://theimaginationtree.com/2011/03/making-play-garden-part-1.html

Egg Carton Creations There's no end to the fun you can have with leftover egg cartons. Here's a few friends that we love:

Turtles - http://www.learnplayimagine.com/2012/10/egg-carton-turtle-craft.html
Chicks - http://typicallysimple.com/spring-chicks-egg-carton-craft/ Ladybugs - http://onelittleproject.com/egg-carton-ladybugs/
Bees - http://www.craftymorning.com/egg-carton-bumble-bee-craft-for-kids/
Honestly, the amount of egg carton fun to be had on Pinterest is endless.
Wax Paper Suncatchers I think these are so beautiful. Wouldn't they look pretty hanging from a branch? http://www.pre-kpages.com/raindrop-suncatchers-fine-motor-art/?utm_content=bufferd08bb&utm_medium=social&utm_source=pinterest.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Upcycled Bird House Ornaments Made from bathroom paper tubes and other light cardboard packaging, these are simply adorable! http://www.rhythmsofplay.com/upcyled-birdhouse-ornaments/

Norooz, which occurs at the Spring Equinox, marks a New Year for many people around the world. It is a time of celebration and renewal. In this week's post we take a look at rituals and traditions for celebrating spring.

Picture the Earth’s equator, a circle all around the Earth. Now imagine that circle projected outward into the imaginary celestial sphere, into outer space. That’s the celestial equator, and it’s infinitely distant.

Three thousand years ago, in ancient Iran, the Zoroastrians recognized the movement of the Sun as it crossed the celestial equator and moved up into the Northern hemisphere. They knew that this meant the coming of a new season, in which the warmth of the sun would awaken new possibilities.

This moment, called Norooz in Farsi, and which astronomers in the Northern hemisphere call the Vernal or Spring Equinox, marks the New Year on the Solar calendar.

Norooz is a compound word in which no means “new,” and rooz means “day.” Norooz is celebrated all over the world, with origins in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Iraq. As the start of Spring, it is a symbolic new beginning for so many of us, and it is in perfect harmony with nature.

As those of us who live up here in the Northern hemisphere know all too well, the arrival of Spring is a moment of relief. It is renewal. Our gratitude for the warmth radiates from our hearts. Our longing to step out into fresh air without piles of winter clothes on is finally met with gentle rays of sunlight beaming warmly back at us.

For many of us, it’s a time to look back, too. I look to the Winters that have gone by, and find that dormant seeds within me were given Winter’s gift of time; time to be cozy and safe, time to ponder and wonder and gather in the magical peacefulness of the cold, time to strengthen hope and faith in a new day.

I recently learned that the no in Norooz, along with meaning “new,” can also mean “now.” Every moment is now and new. And maybe above all else, that’s what the arrival of Spring means to me: It is nature reminding us that new possibilities are available to us every moment, that we can awaken from dormancy into consciousness. So with that, all of us at Tall Earth wish you and your family a very happy first week of Spring, or as it’s said in Farsi, Norooz Mobarak!

Every now and then, we're lucky enough to hear from our Tall Earth customers about their unique wood projects. Today, we share the work of Ben Rawson, of I Wood Build, a Thamesford Ontario based craftsman who used our Weathered Wood Finish on a walnut table top and a pine desk.

We asked Ben about how he used our product and this is what he had to say:

For the pine top desk I finished to 120 sand, apply Weathered Wood Finish and let dry. Then I did a light sand with 220 and a stain (Early American), and two layers of industrial grade lacquer.

Unfortunately I didn't get any up close pictures of it but the grain looks astounding!!

For the walnut top, same thing:

Prep and dress to 120.

Apply Weathered Wood finish and let dry, finish with 220.

Apply oil of choice (I used an oil/resin blend)

Let stand and re-oil.

I have to say this is nothing compared to what happens when this process is done on figured walnut!

More About Ben's Company:

I Wood Build was founded in early 2015 as a small local business focusing on smaller projects and occasionally the odd refined piece of furniture. After taking on some interesting projects and getting into timber frame work, the company was forced to search for mills around the area.

I Wood Build has joined with two sister businesses "Kintore Custom Hardwood", focusing on milling and drying locally sourced lumber and "Big Ass Slabs", focusing on custom milling very big slabs, trees and timber work.

Today, clients can rely on I Wood Build for unique custom pieces such as furniture (tables, bars and more) to timber frame kits. The company is committed to using locally sourced materials, and are in the process of becoming a partner for the Ontario Wood Program.

They continue to join forces with other local high-end custom companies that build doors, kitchens, cabinetry and more.
