Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been doing some stuff, some of which has been a lot of fun, some of which has been unpleasant and some of which could result in exciting news (for me, at least) in the very near future. Also, I have been writing for a couple of other sites (and earning a wee bit of extra scratch in the process! Hey, this being a professional writer stuff is kinda fun!) and there's only so much time in a day and so much typity-type-type in my sausagey fingers. Things should get back to normal soon and I'll get back to padding the big, dumb ol' purple blog with some arbitrary silliness. In the meantime, if you must know what else I've been working on...

Game 58: Vancouver in Tampa Preview

I wait all year for this game. This is the one game where my two teams face each other. It's the one day that I can rock my Lightning jersey around Vancouver and this year I can do it with a little swagger. Last year the Lightning had no hope in beating the Canucks, this year the Lightning have a few things going for them: the team is playing far better together as a team, our goalie Niittymaki has been outstanding most nights and Stamkos is the powerhouse that we had hoped for. Woo!

The Canucks are beasts. And I'm not saying that just because they are my home team. In their last 10 games, they have a record of 8-2-0 and they have a home record of 23-7-1 largely due to the huge homestand that they had in January. Heading out on the road, the Canucks have struggled, batting around .500 and have given up 2 or more goals early in the games against the Leafs, Ottawa and Boston. In the games against the Leafs and Boston the Canucks had to make a strong come back to win the game, in their game against the Senators they never found the goals to mount a comeback until it was too late. The Canucks look tired and slow in the 1st period against Boston, but by the 3rd period they were on fire.

The Canucks have their top line of the Sedins and Burrows that can run a cycling clinic on teams. They are also the master of blind passes to each other that will leave you scratching your head. Their second line is full of speed with Mason Raymond, Ryan Kesler and Mikael Samuelsson but the Canucks need ever more secondary scoring from them. Their third line still can't find it's scoring touch and is really needing a good third line center. And Luongo put on a show in the game against Boston.

The Canucks are without winger Demitra who left the team yesterday due to personal reasons. They are also without two of their top 4 defencmen, Willie Mitchell (concussion, neck, back) and Kevin Bieksa (severed ankle tendons).

The Lightning have been 7-2-1 and are still in the playoff race currently sitting in 8th spot. After a huge team rally against Calgary to tie up the game, and Meszaros getting the game winner. Niittymaki has been 6-0-1 in his last seven starts.

Shane O'Brien makes his first trip back to Tampa Bay after being traded to Vancouver in 2008 for Lukas Krajicek. Mattias Ohlund faces the Canucks for the first time since leaving the club to sign a long-term contract with the Lightning this summer.

"He was our Dad," Daniel said with a smile. "He helped us and Alex Edler, too. He's a big part of why we are where we are right now."

"He is going to play the same way he always does and you just have to try and keep your head up and watch out for him," Henrik said. "He is one of the best hitters in the league and when he comes at you he is going to hit you. I think we're lucky he's a lefty and he is going to come at Burr (linemate Alex Burrows) maybe."

"I heard Henrik say I'm lucky he's the left defenceman," Daniel joked. "I'm not going to cross the ice when he's on the ice. When you play with him you realize how big a man he is. He has such great timing, too, for a big guy, so you have to be careful. We'll try to chip it in and use our speed."

Reports of the death of the TV hospital drama—foretold by the end of "ER" last season after 27 years on the air—were apparently premature.

Showtime has "Nurse Jackie"; TNT has "HawthoRNe" and NBC is back with a new one that adds an "M," a "C" and a "Y" to "E" and "R" and that gives us "Mercy." (Oh, stop groaning—you saw that one coming a mile away.) ("Mercy" Website)

But alert Nurse Hathaway! In this network show, the nurses—not the doctors—are running the asylum. Starring Taylor Schilling, Michelle Tractenberg and my guest today, Jamie Lee Kirchner, "Mercy" lets viewers know who's really in charge on the floors.

Big timed it this past weekend

Went to a football game this past Sunday.

We had some access to a pre-game thing and I met up with Lee Evans. Throughout the past few fantasy seasons I have had him on and off my roster. I felt like it would be good for me to coach him up a little bit.

Took a picture with a Miami Dolphin Cheerleader also because I could.

Earlier in the morning we had breakfast at this thing where Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez and Joe Montana talked a little bit about football.

This is my boss and his wife and Tim Tebow. We did not know that Tim Tebow was going to be at this thing. It was kind of a surprise. We thought we were just going to see and meet Joe Montana.

Kind of sad f0r me but I think the guy who was taking the picture of Me and Tim Tebow

pushed the wrong button and I didn't get a shot of him and me on my camera. I do think there is another camera that has one though, and I should get it e-mailed to me soon.

Joe Montana is taller then I thought he was.

My landlord comes by once in a while. Unannounced. He and his wife are older, that nebulous age where maybe they’re elderly—but not quite because they both still work handing out samples at a big box food store. I imagine them driving to work together, and it makes me smile.

Then they show up at my door when I’m in my pajamas and I have a boob hanging out and I feel less inclined to smile at their eccentricities and sweet relationship. Or they call me on the 31st to remind me that rent is due the next day. Even though we’ve been renting here for two years.

Still, still—I like them. And luckily they like us. It’s a good situation and I feel, more or less, like this house is ours. (Even if all the walls are beige except for the crazy green ones in my older son's room.)

Lately, when my landlord comes by he mentions in a gruff, fatherly tone, “Well, this place certainly looks lived in.”

I have to fight defensiveness the moment the words come out of his mouth. (The fact that he treats me like he’s my dad sets off my inner sulky angst-faced teenage girl.) Of course the house looks lived in, I think. We’re living in it.

It seems like something to aspire to, not something to complain about. When the sun shines on the floor just right and it hasn’t been washed in a few days, you can see little toe prints. Sometimes, yesterday’s dinner can be found in little bits and pieces under the kitchen table. The toy room is full of half-played games and the easel is covered in the tentative scribbles of a learning-to-draw preschooler.

Two years of toy-filled baths and squirmy little boys have left a mark, exposing the ugly green original finish on the tub. The blinds are broken in my husband’s office—those broken blinds and one patch of carpet the only remaining evidence that we once owned two cats.

Under the breakfast bar, my bare feet have left smudges on the beige paint. (Who paints interior walls and bathrooms in matte paint?) The closets are full. The furniture leaves divots in the carpet. The washing machine rattles when we run a load on super. The back yard covered in toys and the playground set my in-laws installed when my son turned two. My neighbors invite us into their yard to pick oranges and tangerines on crisp winter weekends.

In the late afternoon, the sun casts a sharp golden light across the living room.

I try not to get too attached to material things—but I like to nest, I like to feel secure, and I’m happy we’re here. I don’t know how long we’ll stay but for now, I’m glad our home is lived in. I couldn’t wish for more than that.

Veteran Mark Parrish May Soon Be Back In The NHL

Veteran Mark Parrish has been waived by the Lightning, probably in hopes that he clears waivers and will be signed by the Bolts. The right winger was signed to a series of tryout contracts and was playing in the AHL with the Lightning affiliate Norfolk Admirals trying to prove that he still belongs in the NHL. He is a ten year NHL veteran with 27 games of playoff experience with three different teams.

He can be claimed by any team before 11:00 AM tomorrow. Parrish may become a welcome addition for a Lightning club looking for some veteran leadership. If he clears waivers, look for the club to sign him and call him up to the big team. Brandon Bochenski is the likely candidate to be replaced aand Parrish to be back in the NHL.

Parrish would be a terrific veteran edition at a very inexpensive price.
