Landscape study: being stupid

So I was checking out my friend Onesimus' blog and noticed an inspirational picture he took. I decided I would like to make a study of it. To challenge myself I decided to use one brush with no transparency. It was probably a stupid move, it took me too long to do this one. But I think I learned quite a bit about color and light...which is really the point of all of this. For speed at the end I turned on spacing and flattend the brush because I was pretty much over it. Other than the foreground bushes though it was all the hard, round brush in photoshop and lots of back and forth between a photo. Thanks Onesimus.

Landscape warmup and study

Here is another landscape painting study from a photo. It took longer than the last one. Too many damn trees and such. It was worth it though. I learned quite a bit from this one. Sorry if this was your photo and I didn't credit you. I forgot my hard drive and just grabbed a picture off deviantart. If this is yours contact me and I will gladly link to the original.

Just a quick landscape study from a photo this morning. I am trying to break things down to a few colors and some graphic shapes. Using less transparency on the brushes and switching out colors more.

I couldn't decide if I should post this or not. A friend of mine clutched when he said he said "whoa!" when he opened the email. That is a good reaction to me. :D This was done today. It took a bit to get up the gusto today but I pushed through and did some experimental painting, or at least experimental for me. Enjoy.

Artorder Challenge: Eowyn Vs The Nazgul

So I have been sitting on this one for about three weeks. I spent a good amount of time thinking on compositions and storytelling. It was a really fun challenge. I actually may make a video where I go over each iteration I have saved and show the challenges I set up for myself and how I dealt with them. One of the more frustrating aspects was that I wanted the characters to be diametrically apposed. So, she would be the representation of light and earth and man, and he was ether and darkness and spirit. So a big question I had to think of was, if she is glowing, how do I make him glow dark....yeah, good times. So while you may see, "ghosting" around him, it is all on purpose.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did as it came together.

Morning warmup Conan Trailer study

The new Conan looks like it will be a whole lot of horribly bad fun, and I am excited to waste my money on it. I will go in expecting to have a few laughs and enjoy some violence. Plus I have to see it, gotta support the Hawaiians any way I can. Anyway, I paused the trailer to give it a quick warmup drawing/painting/study this morning. I hope you like it.

Morning warmup: Quick Design

Sort of reminiscent of Medusa (one of my favorite subjects.) However, I was thinking more along the lines of goddess of serpents. Something you might see in an old Conan magazine, one of the first things I read back in the day. When all my friends were reading Disney comics my folks let me read Conan and Elfquest at the tender age of 7 and 8. This stuff shows up once in awhile in my sketches. I think I will use her in an upcoming image.

Dragon Final painting

So I hit this one and tried to nail down a vibrant final. I was going for something that had depth and punch to it. The dragon is saying to the doomed hitchhiker "go away, you bother me."

Long Painting: Warrior Battle

This one was supposed to be a study on the ultimate warrior for http://theartorder.com/ However, I saw the post on last thursday. Then I had to do The Original Drink and Draw that night. So I was able to work on it breifly before I had to go to and shoot pictures for my good friends wedding. So, I missed the sunday at midnight deadline. So, rather than rush it I took my time finishing it off. Here it is.

Here is the next longer painting. I couldn't tell you how many hours this is. Not too many, but it was such a staccato production that I lost track of the hour count. I do have to thank a few art director folks for giving me that extra push on the end there. First of all Daniel Landerman secondly Izzy Medrano. Both of them are outstanding artists and stepped up to tell me exactly how much it sucked until they came along. :D I hope you like it.

Morning warm up: Snowy

Yet another morning warmup. I am trying to get everything to read in gray scale at this point before I start adding color. Hopefully soon I will feel like I am ready to bust out a few full color warmups.

This one took longer than one morning. I was battling myself to get it dynamic enough. It's not perfect, but I am moving on, i have other sketches to do.
