Matte-ish Painting

2014-02-27T16:03:00.000-08:00

Between work and as some warmup I have been working on my digital painting skills. This was started over a photo I took. An hour here and there, ultimately only about 4 hours or so on it. It isn't meant to be a real matte painting. More like an idea on the way to the final matte painting.

Recent speed paintings

2014-02-19T10:06:00.000-08:00

So here are a few recent speed paintings I did. The only rule is 30 minutes, then "pencils" down.

A day for doodles

2013-09-15T20:18:00.001-07:00

I spent the day learning some software. This was the result.

Concepts: Mars Wars

2013-02-18T21:05:00.001-08:00

So, I should be working. I have a deadline. However, sometimes you have to stop and let your brain explode an idea. So here it is. I guess I will stay up late and finish out some real work now.

Illustration: Dragon flight

2013-02-11T11:26:00.000-08:00

Dragon lovers rejoice! I spent some time yesterday with an old sketch. I wanted to really get into some rendering and spend some time thinking about lighting and drama. So I looked back and found this sketch and started on it in the morning.

I did the last 10% or so this morning to get the polish just right. I included an animated gif for all you who want to see the process.

scifi/fantasy sketches

2013-02-10T11:19:00.000-08:00

Book sellers lump these genres together on the shelves, so I will do one of each. One is fantasy and one is scifi. The scifi one is actually a thought around the next chapter of 300 stories. That's a group of short stories that I wrote.

Concept: Stranded

2013-02-05T22:35:00.002-08:00

OK so this one was a continuation of a morning warm-up The thought is of a fighter that is downed on a decaying planet. All the cities and tech have been left behind. He should be able to figure out a way off the rock if he can't get a signal out.

Here is the original sketch.

More Scifi sketching

2013-02-01T12:24:00.001-08:00

Well, I am waiting on a client to contact me so i have a few extra moments. I thought I would throw down some digital design ideas. Left to right: mars Terra forming and off the ground buildings to allow for storm airflow, Then a view of a shipyard from inside adjacent structures (you can see there is an area below the ship protected by barriers. This is to insure no one is injured be the ships engines or debris during repairs,) finally thoughts on Paul Mau'dib and the golden path (Herbert says that in Paul's mind he is the fulcrum, the point where all time possibilities meet and extend into the future. This was a quick visual thought of him using his time sense to survey his kingdom.) Thinking mans sketches.

Scifi Warm-ups

2013-01-31T09:55:00.001-08:00

Just some quick landscapes to warm-up the wrists and mind this morning. My thoughts were on alien civilizations, landscapes and possible speculative fiction. Such as what might Mars look like as we establish the first colonies.

Warmup dump

2012-12-10T11:59:00.001-08:00

Today's post brought to you by the words DUNE and landscapes. I have been kicking around a bunch of thumbnails you all may or may not want to see. Which one is your favorite.

Fremen Design speed paint

2012-12-05T22:33:00.002-08:00

I wanted to take an honest stab at a Fremen character design while the book is still fresh in my head. Here is a speed painting just to throw it out there.

Morning warmup: quick sketch space

2012-11-20T12:40:00.000-08:00

I was watching a documentary on the universe this morning while drawing. This is what came from it. Just a quickie.

Color concepts: DUNE deep desert

2012-11-12T22:43:00.000-08:00

So I have been kicking around colors and concepts and just wanting to get some of my concept designs going again. As usual i go back to my favorite books. I started re-reading DUNE again. Here is one of my concepts in a different style.

I did a quick edit on this one to fix some of the value grouping and shadow issues. I thought I would leave the old one up so you could see how small changes can be to try to reach balance.

Morning fun: spaceships

2012-11-10T12:43:00.000-08:00

So I thought, why not spaceships on a Saturday. Here is some of what I did this morning.

OH I get it, Lightning bug.

2012-11-08T13:32:00.000-08:00

So I was watching some concept design videos and decided to throw down some silhouettes This is one of them taken a bit further. maybe and hour and 20 or so to finish.

Morning Warmups: color and creativity

2012-11-07T09:33:00.000-08:00

One of these was done last night, the other this morning. They are about 45 minutes a piece. Just playing with doing sketches that are not greyscale. Really I was looking to evoke mood via lighting more than anything else, so the design is pretty basic.

morning warmups: creative stuff

2012-11-06T11:49:00.000-08:00

Some more morning warm ups. Just feeling the photoshop brushes and loosening up my wrist. I am working at keeping the values solid and grouped appropriately. You may notice that i don't go all the way to black on these. That is so that the colorization process will go more smoothly if I choose to work on something more. For now though, it's just fun.

Digital Warmups

2012-11-05T10:15:00.000-08:00

I felt like doing some digital warmups today. Working mainly on being lose and getting some interesting shapes. I am really enjoying the new photoshop brushes.

Inspirational People: P.O.S (Stefon Alexander)

2012-10-31T19:48:00.001-07:00

Here is a illustration I did today while waiting on a meeting. This is a continuation of the series I started with the Neil Armstrong piece. I wanted to get as many as the people that inspire me onto paper in one way or another. P.O.S is a rapper, you may like his work. I find it very resonant with my life.

New Inspiration

2012-10-29T12:59:00.001-07:00

I made the leap to PS6 today. This is the sketch product of this morning. I like it. It runs more smoothly and the brush engine has significant improvements. Good going adobe. As usual, magic using warriors and big hulking monsters came out of my head.

October Monster a Day: Day 5

2012-10-05T19:20:00.002-07:00

Here is my monster for the day. She is inspired and modeled by Amy. Thanks Amy.

October Monster: Day 4

2012-10-04T16:25:00.003-07:00

I posted days two and three in sketch format over on facey-book. Here is my day 4 monster. Is a robot a monster? Whatever. This one is somewhere between pixar and Arenanet.

more mountain top fantasy

2012-09-11T10:42:00.000-07:00

I am giving myself no more than an hour per sketch on these. At an hour I set the pen down and let it be what it is.

continuing this sketch format

2012-09-10T11:26:00.001-07:00

So in my hour of warm up this morning this is what I came up with. I seem to have a theme. Apparently none of the people I sketch know how to visit a tailor fix their frayed cloaks.
