How to eat cakes, ice-cream and drink lattes and still lose weight

2012-07-15T14:54:00.000-07:00

You've heard of that phrase, watch the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves? Well the same can also be said for calories so next time you are thinking about tucking into a biscuit, cake or curry take a second to see if there's something similar but more figure friendly instead? Here are just a few examples.

Swap: An Iced Cream Slice (335 Kcals and 16g fat)
For: An Iced Finger (152 Kcal and 3.4g fat)
Save: 183 Kcals and 12.6g fat

All the sugar from the icing, the whipped cream and the high fat puff pastry in a cream slice wages all out war on the waistline. Iced fingers however are made from soft bread, not pastry, they don't contain cream and although still topped with icing for the sugar hit you crave they generally come in a smaller serving size all of which makes them far more figure friendly.

Swap: A Cornetto (195 kcal 9.7g fat)
For: A Whipped Ice-cream in a Cone (85 Kcal and 3.5g fat)
Save: 110 Kcal and 6.2g fat per ice-cream

Cornetto cones are packed to the tip with ice-cream and other ingredients such as chocolate and nuts that all add to the calories and fat content. A traditional 'Mr Whippy' consists of a light, low calorie wafer style cone topped with half the amount of ice-cream whipped up with double the amount of air making it far more diet friendly. Just try and pass on the flake!

Swap: A mini naan bread (165 Kcals, 7g fat)
For: A Chapatti (95 Kcals 0.5g fat)
Save: 70 Kcals and 6.5g fat

Naan breads are a great source of energy giving carbohydrates but they can be quite high in fat and calories. Weight for weight chapattis contain just as much carbohydrate and protein as a naan but have far less calories and fat.

Swap: Mayonnaise (238 kcal and 26g fat per tablespoon)
For: Hummus (106 kcals and 9g fat per tablespoon)
Save: 102 kcal and 17g fat per tablespoon)

The main ingredients of mayonnaise are oil and egg yolks which makes it a high fat, high calorie addition to your sandwich. Hummus is largely made from chickpeas and contains less olive oil so the calories and fat content are lower.

Swap: Double Cream (197 kcals and 21g fat per serving)
For: Single Cream (55 kcals and 4.7g fat per serving)
Save: 142 kcals and 16.3g fat per serving

Double cream contains approximately 50% fat which is what makes it possible to whip into a thicker consistency. Single cream only has about 18% fat so if you are just looking for something to pour on a dessert or add to soups it is a far healthier choice.

Swap: A small skimmed vanilla latte (151 Kcal, 0.2g fat)
For: A small skimmed latte (51 kcal, 0.3g fat)
Save: 51 Kcals per serving

Whether it's vanilla, maple, coconut or whatever other flavours might be on offer in your favourite coffee bar, the extra sweet shot really pushes up the calories in a latte. Go for a regular skimmed latte instead and you'll save over 100 calories per drink. If you need a bit of extra sweetness add a sprinkle of chocolate powder on top.

Swap: Caesar Salad (510 Kcals and 40.5g fat per portion)
For: Chicken Salad (229 Kcals and 4.2g fat per portion)
Save: 281 kcals and 36.3g per portion

Don't let the lettuce and the name 'salad' fool you! The deep fried croutons, Parmesan shavings and fatty Caesar salad dressing that are traditionally associated with this meal can really pack a calorific punch! However, char grilled chicken breast served on a bed of salad and drizzled in a little balsamic vinegar makes a really tasty, healthy alternative.

Swap: Beef Lasagna (285 Kcal and 15g fat per portion)
For: Vegetable Lasagna (204 Kcal and 8 g fat per portion)
Save: 81 Kcals and 7g fat per portion

Beef is a good source of iron but even lean beef mince contains fat which can push up calories. Swapping the beef mince for vegetables such as peppers, carrots, tomatoes and courgettes almost halves the fat content of this classic dish and significantly increases the fibre.

Swap: French Dressing (71 Kcal 7.5g fat per tablespoon)
For: Balsamic Vinegar (13 Kcal 0g fat per tablespoon)
Save: 58 Kcals and 7.5g fat per tablespoon.

The olive oil in French dressing may be high in healthy monounsaturated fats but it can be high in calories too. Balsamic vinegar still tastes delicious but contains far fewer calories and is fat free.

BE PATIENT

A sweet lesson on patience.

A NYC Taxi driver wrote:

I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard

box filled with photos and glassware.

'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.'

'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive

through downtown?'

'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly..

'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice..'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired.Let's go now'.

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.

They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse.

'Nothing,' I said

'You have to make a living,' she answered.

'There are other passengers,' I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.She held onto me tightly.

'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.'

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut.It was the sound of the closing of a life..

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day,I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver,or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

DO YOU KNOW HIM?

BABY GIRLS ARE THE BOMB!!

2012-07-06T19:34:00.000-07:00

A couple made a deal the night of their Marriage to NOT open the door of their room to anybody who comes knocking in the morning for any reason!
In the morning the parents of the husband came & knocked on the door, the husband & the wife were looking at each other & as they agreed before, they didn't open the door.
After a while the parents of the bride came knocking at the door to check on them, the couple were looking at each other, then the bride dropped a tear & started crying she said: "I cannot keep them knocking & not open the door, I miss them already"
The husband didn't say anything & he let her open the door for her parents.
Years & years passed & the couple had 5 children, the first ones were boys & the 5th was a little girl, when she was born the father was xtremely happy that Almighty blessed him with her, & he threw a Huge Party for her in Grand style, people were so amazed with his joy & his happiness that they asked him, why are you so happy with her more than you were before with her older brothers?
He answered simply: "She is the one who will open the door for me"
Baby girls are the comfort of the eyes of their father!
They hold the key to their mothers hearts!
Daughters are really unique.
They care for their parents even after they are married.
Its rightly said, "A son is a son till he gets a Wife, a daughter is a daughter the rest of her Life!
Dedicated to all daughters & Daughter in Laws .:)

Tanzania gets new beauty queeen

2012-03-11T03:38:00.000-07:00

Newly crowned Miss Tanzania 2011 Salha Ireael (centre) with second runner up Tracy Sospeter ( right) and third placed Alexia Williams after Saturday's content in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam. Miss Ilala zone, Salha Israel (18) has won this year Miss Tanzania beauty pageant held at the Mlimani City hall.Salha beat other 29 contestants to take new model car, Jeep Patriot worth Tsh. 72 million and Shs 8 million in the historical pageant since the start of the beauty competition in 1994.
In 2003, Sylvia Bahame of Temeke zone won Nisan Hardbody worth Sh55 million and Sh7 million cash. Salha becomes the first winner to pocket such a huge amount of money.

It was not easy for salha who is also Miss Ilala to win the crown and a ticket to represent the country in the 61st Miss World beauty contest scheduled for November 6 at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. Her win didn’t come at easy, she faced a number of other beauties but her accuracy in answering a number of questions from the judges including how to fight corruption in the country proved a turning point to her winning the crown.

Other contestants who managed to reach top five included Loveness Flavian who got Sh3million, and Jeniffer Kakolaki who pocketed Sh2.4 million.

For their efforts, those who came number six to 16th were awarded Sh1.2 million each while the 17th to 30th took home a consolation prize of Sh700, 000 each. The cash prizes bring the grand total of the money to be spent on prizes alone to approximately Sh120 million.

Salha answered well the question with great confidence in English and made thousands of beauty pageant fans to cheer her. The move made fans to predict to her that she would be the top queen in the contest.

When Miss Tanzania committee chairman, Prashant Patel announcing the winners, the fans knew that Salha is the one who would go home with the brand new car.

“I am very happy to win the crown and get the chance to represent my country in Miss World, I was dreaming on it and call support to all beauty pageant stakeholders,” said Salha.
However the queen was not allowed to continue with the interview by the security guards and bouncers and gave difficulties the journalists to get other deep information concerning her.
The pageant also saw Miss Shinyanga, Tracy Sospeter winning the second position and was given Sh6.2 million while Alexia Williams also from Ilala emerged third and was given Sh4 million.
Ilala zone dominated the pageant after winning the fourth position through Jennifer Kakolaki and Lindi region top queen, Lovennes Flavian won fifth position.

Others contestants who qualified into to 15 and took home Sh1.2 million were Mwajabu Juma (Temeke, Miss Top Model), Rose Hurbert (North, Talent), Mariaclara Mathayo (Coast), Cynthia Kimasha (Temeke), Christine Williams (Iringa), Hamisa Hassan , Stella Mbuge (Kinondoni), Chiaru Masonobo (Udsm) and Irene Karugaba of Mwanza.

The contestants who were give consolation prizes of Sh700,000 were Weirungu David, Neema Mtitu, Zerulia Manoko , Christina Mwenegoha, Dalila Gharibu, Maua Kimambo, Blessing Ngowi, Glory Lory, Zubeda Seif , Husna Maulid , Atu Daniel, Leila Juma , Asha Saleh and Glory Samwel.
The pageant was entertained by Tanzania artistes but it was the now famous Sharobaro who took the stage by storm and John Maganga who imitated the late Michael Jackson.

Juliana Kanyomozi from Uganda did her part also by making the crowd leave their chairs with her Usiende Mbali and Haturudi Nyuma.

Salha’s victory brings the crown back to Ilala after years of missing the crown. Last year’s Genevieve Mpangala is from Temeke while before her Mwanza had taken the crown twice with Nasrin Karim and Miriam Gerald emerging winners in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

More Than Pink Lotion: Product Recommendations for Every Style

2012-03-11T03:16:00.000-07:00

Shampoo That Doesn’t Strip Your Locks

Better referred to as a cleanser than a regular shampoo, Miss Jessie’s Creme de la Curl wash ($16+) can do wonders for the chick hoping to wash her hair on a daily basis. Why? Well, because Creme de la curl is sulfate-free wash, aka, no massive suds in the tub, which helps your hair keep the natural oils and moisture it needs. The cleanser is said to be especially made for women with dry, damaged hair, as well as those with chemicals in their hair as well as color. While many of Miss Jessie’s products can be a big hit or a depressing miss (especially for the price), this shampoo was highly recommended and leaves hair smelling fresh–not fruity, but just fresh and clean. First timers should look for the sample size to try it out, ranging at $2+.

For Straight Hair and Curly Hair That Needs Some Shine

If you went through all that trouble to flat iron your hair, then it would be a shame to be seen ashy-headed on the streets because of lack of shine. Same goes for women who stay with curls in their hair, frizzy hair the minute you step out the door is always a disappointment. So it was recommended for both types to try MoroccanOil ($15+) oil treatments. The oil treatment specifically has been lauded by women with naturally curly hair or who prefer it straight because of its use of argan oil. Argan oil, coming from the Argan tree in Morrocco, is used by women in the country trying to protect their hair from constant heat and over-the-top sun exposure. The oil will help your hair absorb new color (apply before) for a brighter effect and will condition those strands.

For Those Looking to Keep Hair in Place Sans Gel

A co-worker of mine who maintains a very clean, edgy, tapered bob recommended Organic Root Stimulator’s Edge Control ($4+) for her tapered edges. How many times have you thought to put some hard gel (that turns white if not rubbed in) on your edges when they come up off your face? Or spent a majority of your morning while getting ready for work, with a bandana or wrap around your head keeping those bad boys down? Edge Control might help. Not only is it non-greasy or sticky, it won’t dry the creepy way gel does when it makes your hair feel hard. It’s great for women with hair of all lengths, plus, it’s made of olive oil. Who doesn’t love olive oil these days! Organics has some amazing products in all facets of hair (also try their tea tree oil cream), and this product is no less successful.

For Those Looking to Define Their Curls

If your hair is a bit more on the rough and tumble side (tumble as in tumbleweeds), or if you have bland curls that need definition, the Kinky-Curl curling custard ($17+) can be a miracle for some women. The custard not only defines your curls, but does what a lot of curling creams don’t do well–moisturize. It indeeds gives life to often hidden and humbled coils and gives them a bit more length than other creams that define but shrink. The product is said to be made with all natural ingredients and can be applied straight out the shower, and on soaked hair for those with tighter coils. Be prepared to be impressed.

For Keeping Twists and Locs in Tact

A friend of mine from high school recommended Carol’s Daughters’ Loc Butter ($15.50+), as she swears by the product when she’s looking to two-strand twist her hair and top it off with ornate headbands and accessories. The pomade is said to provide a sheen for locs, twists and braids, even just the regular french braids, and provides relief to your scalp thanks to Ylang-Ylang oil. The ingredients don’t have intricate names you can’t pronounce or find, just things like corn, beeswax, and fruit oils like tangerine and grapefruit. All natural.

For Shine and Humidity Control

My sister actually recommends the humidity resistant mist from Mizani ($8+), good for all kinds of hair types and styles. Once it gets too hot outside to the point where you start complaining–and you know you will–you’ll probably go to a lot of festivals and outdoor events. So it’s best to take care of any humidity issues before you get in the car. The Mizani mist is good for shielding hair from humid situations and too much sun (women with colored hair) because of UV sunscreen included, and helps in the process of reducing your hair from being mangled by split ends and frizz. It holds your hairs strands in place but also provides a bit of shine and bounce. But don’t go overboard with it.

For Those Who Still Grease Their Scalps

No shame in greasing your scalp the old school, “She’s Gotta Have It” way, especially if you are using the right light products that won’t cause a mess of build up on your scalp or in your fingernails (ewwww). That’s why Cantu Shea Butter Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment ($4+) is a great recommendation. Put it on your hair if you like, but it also does wonders for your scalp without clogging it like greases (see Blue Magic). Made with pure shea butter, it restores oils and health to your scalp and also strengthens hair from the roots. Now, not everyone needs to grease their scalps, but some people have constantly dry heads that need a lot of love, and if that’s you, then Cantu just might work wonders for you.

For The Lady That Skips Dates With a Comb

A very funny young lady praised the magical powers of ApHogee’s two-step protein treatment ($7+), saying it actually brings her hair back to life when a busy schedule takes attention away from hair duties. Happens to the best of us. The product is said to be good for not just relaxed hair, and hair with color, but for damaged natural hair. The protein treatment slowly rebuilds hair structure thanks to its mixture of magnesium and modified proteins. With the use of some heat, these ingredients fuse into the hair and make it healthier. So if you’ve neglected your hair to the point of crispy breakage, ApHogee’s protein treatment process is a good idea. The makers of the product say that the product should harden into the hair when it’s working, so don’t freak out, simply re-wet and rinse, and voila! Your hair is back from the dead, boo!

For the Leave-In Preferred Ladies With Curls or Weaves

Another product that consistently has been brought up is the leave-in conditioner from Mixed Chicks ($16+). Don’t let the name scare you if you don’t believe you’re a mixed chick (we’re all mixed with a few things), the leave-in conditioner is helpful for not only those with large fros of curls, but those with frizzy curls and frizzy weaves that need some healthy curl to ‘em. The product is said to make your curls soft to the touch, help define them and keep everything up top fresh to death. The non-sticky conditioner is lightweight and ready for application on your wet hair. And leave-ins are so much better than the traditional, cause who has time to sit with a gold-foil conditioning cap anymore?

For Those Who Can’t Live Without HeatPeople with really short relaxed hair, or long relaxed hair, or who just thoroughly enjoy flat ironing their hair, expose their heads to a great deal of heat, at extremely high temperatures. Think of all the steam you see rising at the beauty shop when they use their irons. A whole lot of crackling and popping, right? Not only does this heat sound scary, but it can be damaging and drying to your hair. Blow dryers on the highest heat can even have detrimental effects, so help in relieving the stress to your strands with Nexxus Heat Protexx ($11+) is a great heat protecting lotion for your head. You don’t need anything really greasy that will help in making that steam rise, and Pink Oil lotion is highly over-exaggerated in its effects. Heat Protexx absorbs heat and helps prevent breakage without making your hair feel oily, all helping to prevent frizz as you blow dry and flat iron your hair for what feels like forever after washing.

Come back next time for more tips.

TV STARS WHO ARE OLDER THAN YOU THINK

2012-02-24T10:59:00.000-08:00

On TV, it's not uncommon for an actor to play young. And while getting a little nip and tuck to keep up with the latest crop of young Hollywood talent has become the norm, some genetically blessed stars oppose convention. They let nature take its course -- with miraculous results. Check out the list of 15 age-defying TV stars.

Bianca Lawson ("Pretty Little Liars"), 32

"Pretty Little Liars" star Bianca Lawson (Maya) has been playing high school students for 20 years. As in two decades. It boggles our mind that someone who was a regular on "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" still can pass for a teenager. But it’s true: Bianca turns 33 on March 20. Where can we get this age potion she must be drinking?

Alison Brie ("Community," "Mad Men"), 29

Alison Brie plays college student Annie Edison on NBC's "Community," but in real life she graduated from California Institute of the Arts way back in 2005. This brunette beauty, who also stars as Trudy Campbell on AMC's "Mad Men," was born on December 29, 1982. Clearly, she gets an A+ in antiaging.

Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU"), 48

As the daughter of '50s sex symbol Jayne Mansfield and former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay, Mariska Hargitay was destined to be gorgeous. Still, we’re amazed by just how well the 48-year-old has aged. Since starting her run as Detective Olivia Benson on "SVU" 13 years ago, she has continued to look every bit the beauty queen. Honestly, it’s a crime.

Sarah Hyland ("Modern Family"), 21

"Modern Family's" Sarah Hyland (Haley Dunphy) looks every bit the high school girl she plays. But would you have guessed that she’s not even a teen? Believe it or not, the petite actress, who was born on November 24, 1990, is of legal drinking age. We’re going to need a tall, cold one ourselves, just to deal with that shocker.

Randy Jackson ("American Idol"), 55

It's hard to believe that "American Idol's" longest-standing judge, Randy Jackson, was born on June 23, 1956, but the truth is in his resume. Not only has he worked with everyone in the music biz, from Whitney Houston to Mariah Carey, but he's also jammed with Journey and Santana. That's old school, dawg!

LL Cool J ("NCIS: Los Angeles"), 44

Like his "NCIS: Los Angeles" character, LL Cool J (Sam Hanna) is multitalented. Born James Todd Smith on January 14, 1968, he got his start as a rapper before taking the leap into acting. Now 44, he's in awesome shape, continues to make new music, and stars on one of TV's highest-rated shows. His name says it all: Ladies (Still) Love Cool James.

James Lipton ("Inside the Actors Studio"), 85

As the executive producer, writer, and host of Bravo’s "Inside the Actors Studio," James Lipton certainly knows how to keep himself busy. Although the 85-year-old (born September 19, 1926) is well beyond retirement age, he shows no sign of slowing down. Maybe hard work is what keeps him young, or perhaps he’s got a . . . Grecian formula?

Jennifer Lopez ("American Idol"), 42

"American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez has been around so long that she had to introduce herself to “a new generation of party people” in her recent hit, “On the Floor.” Those who don’t remember her "Jenny From the Block" days would be shocked to learn that the mother of two is 42, born July 24, 1969. Whatever you're doing, keep it up, J.Lo!

Gabriel Mann ("Revenge"), 39

We were sure that Gabriel Mann, who plays the snarky Nolan Ross on "Revenge," was around the same age as his 20-something cast mates. So imagine our surprise when we discovered that he is actually 39 and was born on May 14, 1972. Seriously? We’re still not over it.

Cory Monteith ("Glee"), 29

"Glee" star Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) dropped out of high school in the ninth grade, but thanks to his boyish charm and youthful good looks, he's able to relive his missed high-school years over a decade later. Believe it or not, McKinley High's show tune-singing, football-playing boy next door was born on May 11, 1982, which makes him sweet 29.

Jack McBrayer ("30 Rock"), 38

"30 Rock's" loyal page, Kenneth Parcell, is so lovably nerdy and naive it's hard to believe that the actor who plays him, Emmy-nominated Jack McBrayer, is 38. Born on May 27, 1973, Jack has been in the biz for almost 20 years, a fact that gives serious credence to the whole "laughter is the best medicine" theory.

Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory"), 38

We're convinced that "The Big Bang Theory's" Jim Parsons has a secret formula for youth. Jim was born on March 24, 1973, which makes him about 10 years older than his onscreen counterpart, science prodigy Sheldon Cooper. Can someone please explain the physics behind that?

Pauley Perrette ("NCIS"), 42

It’s not just the pigtails that make "NCIS's" Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) look forever young, but they certainly don’t hurt. The popular star has enough energy and enthusiasm to make anyone jealous, but even more so when you consider that she'll be 43 on March 27. If sleeping in a coffin like Abby does can do that for you, it may be worth trying out.

Britt Robertson ("Secret Circle"), 21

Britt Robertson (Cassie Blake) looks right at home at "The Secret Circle’s" fictional Chance Harbor High. But like her co-stars, she could attend only if she was a super-super-senior. As an April 18, 1990, baby, the dimpled blonde is 21. Whoddathunkit?

Betty White ("Hot in Cleveland"), 90

"Hot in Cleveland"star Betty White (Elka Ostrovsky) is white hot at the age of 90. The only surviving "Golden Girl," Betty, who was born on January 17, 1922 (yes, 1922!), makes grandmothers everywhere jealous. Speaking of grandmothers, is it wrong that we secretly wish she were ours?

In and out of your life and so,

And is there when needed, you’re truly blessed.

Whitney Houston accepts an award at the Warner Theatre during the 2010 BET Hip Hop Honors. The last award she received before saying goodbye to us.

She still had it in her.

Her beauty was unimaginable, her voice was superb and out of this world. Loosing her means we have lost a female soul in pop music. Not only was she a hero to most girls and women in this world, she was also a loving mother to her beautiful daughter who grew up to be her mother's best friend and carer. Whitney will always be missed even to those who did not know her worldwide because no matter where you are, when you hear her voice, you just have to stand still and listen until the song ends. That is how good her voice attracted hearts and souls of her fans. May the Almighty Rest you soul in peace. Amen...You will be remembered.
