Taos Ski Valley

The Dallas Morning News has a nice article today about the Enchanted Circle.  Of course, this time of year it's talking mostly about skiing.  But, there are also nice comments about the local food, museums, art and scenery.

It's the time of year to start seeing these stories, as the ski season is fast approaching.  It's been cold enough most nights for Taos to make snow.  Hopefully, we'll get a good snow or two this month to help get the season off to a great start.  This article has good things to say about Red River, Angel Fire, and Sipapu as well.

Taos County is gearing up for THE BIG READ, a month-long party that kicks off November 7^th, and everybody’s invited.

Drop by the Taos Public Library this Saturday, between noon and 2:30, for food, music, fun, and your own FREE COPY of the book we’ll all be reading.

The book is BLESS ME, ULTIMA, by New Mexico author Rudolfo Anaya, and we’ll have dozens of other FREE events and activities throughout the month to encourage people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life to come out and share their thoughts and stories.

At 7pm Saturday, nationally acclaimed, Dixon-raised poet Levi Romero takes the stage at the Taos Center for the Arts.

Joined by members of the Taos High School Poetry team, Romero plans to enchant the crowd with stories, reminiscences, and poetry that celebrate northern New Mexico and pay tribute to the rich culture of the area.

All events are FREE.  Come join us!

What’s a BIG READ? It’s a project of the National Endowment for the Arts, and is sponsored here in Taos by SOMOS, Taos’ premier literary organization, in collaboration with the Taos Public Library.

The idea is that all of us who live in Taos County will read the same book at the same time and be inspired to talk about the issues it raises.

Each book discussion will be led by a facilitator who has prepared a list of thought provoking questions regarding the chosen book.  We will share our reactions to the plot, character development, setting, tone, style and intent of each author’s written work.  All opinions welcome!

We will continue the New Mexican theme by reading, “Death Comes for the Archbishop” by Willa Cather for the December meeting on 12/1/09.

From January through May of 2010 we will explore the genre of memoir beginning with “The Liar's Club” by Mary Karr on 1/5/2010.

The Taos real estate market doesn't have that volume, nor nearly as many of the loftily-priced structures that are used as examples in the article.  But, we do have, as of  this morning, 55 residential properties listed at over $1 million.  The average and median days on market for these homes is over 400 days, and the average price is $1,744,992.

As only 5 homes over $1,000,000 have sold in the MLS since last October 1st, this puts the current absorption rate at around 11 years with that 55 unit inventory.  True, absorption rates can change dramatically overnight if a few of these homes sell prior to ski season.  But, will we have our own little mini-avalanche of price cuts to make that happen at the high end?

3) Chile Line question from audience member connected with UNM.  Can the Chile Line local transit service continue to the new Klauer Campus?  Mayor and Town Manager indicated that meetings have been occurring with UNM to figure that out, because current funding for the Town’s LOCAL service limits service to just outside the Town’s boundary.  However, new approaches are in the works to make this happen as Klauer Campus ridership reaches numbers that can justify such a transit service.

4) Efficiency audits of Town structures (63 in all) and solar panels are new energy conservation initiatives added to the already impressive Economic Stimulus awarded the Town of Taos from the Department of Energy, and announced earlier today.  Several million in water, wastewater, law enforcement and public works/transit have also been received as part of the Federal Economic Stimulus.

5) Youth Council Representative Appointment – First for the Town of Taos.  Approval and appointment of Feliz Vigil, 17 years of age, for Town of Taos Youth Council Representative.  Vigil’s application letter and resume is attached.  She will join the Council at regular meetings.Arts & Cultural District Assessment Team.

6) Town of Taos Arts & Cultural District Public Meetings Nov 3-5 - The State of New Mexico has formally designated Taos as an Arts & Cultural Distric. This means all types of new economic assistance may be in the works for Taos!  But before that can happen, the Town of Taos needs your help in letting the State know what Taos wants and needs when it comes to our ‘creative economy’.  You can do that November 3 through 5 by participating in a series of open meetings with the State’s Resource Team – these 12 experts will be at the Town’s Convention Center, Coronado Hall on Civic Plaza Dr., to listen and learn.  Here is the schedule. Come and be heard – have your say about the future of Taos’ Arts and Cultural District.

7) Council accepted just-received plaque, and acknowledged September 29, 2009 ranking of Taos as the among the “top destinations for collectors and travelers who love art galleries, museums, and festivals” by AmericanStyle.  Santa Fe was first, and Taos fourth, among the top small cities listed nationally with populations of less than 100,000.  Taos obviously competed with destinations much larger than ourselves – congrats Taos art community!  For more information go to http://www.americanstyle.com/.

Sludge hauling/disposal contract approved with Waste Management of New Mexico.  Sludge must currently go to Rio Rancho, which is the only landfill in the region that is permitted to receive municipal sludge – but plans are in the works to further reduce costs/change this dynamic.   Contract is $65,000.

9) Approval of application submission to State Water Trust Board for financial assistance for the continuation of the Regional Water System Upgrade Project.  Amount is $1,680,000.  Second submission approved for $3.4 million for Water conservation, Recycling, Retreatment and Re-Use Project at the Taos Regional Waste Water Treatment Facility.

10) Finance Department – transfer of funds approved to continue the Taos Express, the nonstop weekend service from Taos to Santa Fe’s NM Rail Runner stations – see more about this service, which will connect with TSV shuttles this winter after December 19, http://www.taosexpress.com/.

11) Contract approved for Universal Professional Services, Gabriel D. Cisneros, for lobbying services on behalf of the Town of Taos before the State of New Mexico.  Amount reduced by $5,000 this year at the request of Council; total is for $30,000 for the year.

12) Council passed Resolution 09-57 opposing any future legislation that would repeal the hold harmless provision on food and medicine for municipalities.  In essence, the Town is opposing any potential State actions that might raise taxes on food or health care services as the State searches for ways to increase budget revenues.

13) Airport Advisory Board Members.  Council approved Mayor’s submitted appointments of Ken Blair and Richard Nichols, each to 4 year terms.  Part of the Mayor’s reasoning in selecting these experienced appointees is that now is a critical moment in time with regard to the crosswinds runway Environmental Impact Study (EIS) and the Federal Aviation Administration’s processing of that document.

The projects are funded through the new Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program, which is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy. The program is administered by the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department's Energy Conservation and Management Division.

The Energy Conservation and Management Division used a competitive process to select projects based on Recovery Act goals to create and retain jobs; save energy; reduce emissions of greenhouse gases; and increase renewable energy production.

The Mayor noted that this is one of the Council's top three priorities, "Initiatives in alternative and renewable energy - working towards a more sustainable community." Mayor Cordova recognized the Town Manager, Daniel Miera, and his staff for working diligently toward this goal. "The staff's aggressive efforts to carry out the vision of the Mayor and Council is evident - and it's obviously paying off," said the Mayor, “This project will further the Town's overall commitment to utilize and promote clean energy.”

2) Art in Town Hall is a new Town of Taos program, spearheaded by Mayor Darren Cordova, allows local artists to share their work within the 28,000 square foot space that is the newly renovated Town Hall. A public reception centered on formally acknowledging completion of the new Town Hall renovation, and this new art program, is planned for sometime this December, 2009, pending full Town Hall construction completion.

Assistant Town Manager Abigail Adame initiated the program several months ago at the Mayor’s request, and her outreach efforts met with wonderful response from the art community – specifically the Taos Artist Organization (TAO), the Taos Institute for Glass Arts, the Taos Gallery Association and the Taos Center for the Arts.

These organizations organized a ‘Curator Committee’ which would complete outreach, select art, complete the necessary forms and ultimately hang art in Town Hall, rotating it on an approximate quarterly basis to enable different Taos artists to participate. The current Curator Committee members include Bonnie Cooper from the Taos Artist Organization, ripwoman7@msn.com, Michael Miro from the Taos Institute for Glass Arts, mmiro@earthlink.net, Robert Nightingale, Taos Gallery Association, info@wnightingale.com, and Dancer Dearing, Taos Center for the Arts, dancer@tcataos.org

Two weeks ago the first art was hung in Town Hall by this Committee, assisted by the Town’s Buildings and Grounds Department. In includes wall art of various mediums, as well as sculpture – with each work having an information plaque next to it, and an overview of all the artists and their works in a notebook catalogue in the Town Hall lobby. In essence, the public is welcome to come and tour Town Hall and its new, wonderful art – it is an undertaking that can be self-guided given the overview in the lobby. More works are being hung next week, adding to the incredible visual display Town Hall now has – reflecting the incredible creative talent in our community.

The current featured artists include, in alphabetical order: Mark Asmus, Lyn Avery, Lorrie Bortner, Donna J. Caulton, Sandy Chestnutt, Bonnie Cooper, Erin Currier (painting on loan to the Town of Taos by The Parks Gallery), Balinda, Chuck Henningsen, Elizabeth Jose, Nancy Lay, Roger Daniel Martinez Y Mondragon, J. Mehaffey, Michael Miro, glass, Laurie Hill Phelps, Cris Pulos, Lynda Smith, Robbie Steinback, and Gak Stonn.

Interested Taos area artists should contact the Curator Committee (emails above) if they have interest in participating in this program as it moves forward. Artists should know that no sales can be enabled by the Town of Taos at the exhibit site, but that artist/gallery contact information is welcome in the information that is made available to the public.

3) Taos and the Enchanted Circle were ranked thirteenth in “133 Destinations Ranked” in the November/December issue of National Geographic Traveler. http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com/2009/11/destinations-rated/list-text/2. 4) September 2009 Griffin & Associates’ Marketing Report for Taos, attached. Thank you to all who made the Taos Summer of Love celebration a success. Looking forward, November 30 is the first deadline for new information focused on the 2010 visitor outreach effort, Return to Sacred Places. Calendar, photo and story content – along with other outreach elements – has begun to be organized, collected and shared at http://www.taossacredplaces.com/. It is a web site (work) in progress. National/international free media activities by Griffin are planned for early 2010, so please focus now on discussing/organizing/communicating information. Taos Real Estate Market

Sorry, as it's been almost three weeks since the last hotsheet, and the same for the inventory statistics.  The inventory stats show that land inventory increased by a few, while homes dropped by about 3.5%.  The Sold Market hotsheet report is below, and you can enlarge and print with the >> at the top right.

Still not a stellar market here, but bargain hunters are finding a lot of opportunity.  If you're sitting on the sidelines, at least consider letting me set you up a custom search to alert you to new listings and price changes for properties specifically matching your criteria and price range.  There are great deals happening, but many happen on a second or third price drop, and someone jumps on them because they're watching.
