First off: a big THANKS to everyone who has signed up to mentor a young writer. We’ve had a healthy response to our appeal, and have a terrific roster of adults willing to join the program.

So, what’s the problem? Well, kind of an embarrassment of riches. We’ve had such an enthusiastic response from the kids so far that we will DEFINITELY exceed the capacity of the mentor roster. WE NEED MORE MENTORS!

I can't overestimate how valuable this one, simple gift -- the gift of your attention, for a few hours a month -- can be to a child.

What’s this program, again? The purpose of the Young Writers' Mentorship Program is to encourage kids, 7th through 12th grade, to explore writing in a fun and supported way. Most mentors meet with their student for an hour at a time, once a week or (more likely) once every two weeks, at a public place like the library or a cafe. We provide some suggestions for writing exercises to get you started, and resources to find more. Some mentor-student pairs follow the format of meeting, chatting for a bit (catching up), then doing a few writing exercises, reading the responses to each other, chatting a bit more. In other cases the kids might be more self-directed, and have a project they want to work on. The trick is to gently guide while following the kid's lead. There's no homework, and the emphasis is on FUN, not correction or precision -- although, if a child asks for help in that department, of course that's something you can offer.

Mostly, the program is about this: kids like stories (poetry, sci fi, you name it), and are curious about writing. Adults provide a safe, supportive environment to explore that field, and at the same time show an interest in the child's overall well being. That's just a fancy way of saying that you might become friends.

I should mention that mentors have program support -- we offer workshops you can attend with your student (or not) throughout the program, we have a big festive initial get-together where all the pairs meet (and parents are invited, too), and we're available for help should you run into questions.

The program starts mid-February and runs through the end of April. Most mentors meet with their kids between six and ten times, total.

We need YOU, and we need your help getting the word out. Please mention the program to any other writers -- professional or recreational -- whom you know. We've found the best way to recruit new people into the program is through word of mouth.

Beginning Friday, February 12, from noon to 1 pm, the Harwood Museum of Art presents the first in a series of lunchtime lectures on printmaking with noted collector, philanthropist and lecturer, Dr. Robert Bell. This first lecture will shed light on the history of printmaking focusing on works by Durer, Whistler, Picasso and Chagall. With the aide of magnification loops, participants can examine the techniques to be discussed.

"My lectures look at techniques, examine historical eras, and provide an opportunity to share my passion of this art form with other print lovers," Bell says.

Due to class size, advanced registration is required. This program is free to Harwood Museum Alliance members. $8 to non-members. To reserve your space for the February 12th noon presentation please call 575 758-9826 or email chinske@unm.edu. The series will continue monthly through May.

The Harwood Museum Alliance is the membership organization of the Harwood Museum of Art. When you join the Alliance, you become a member of the Museum. It is a separate 501c3, set up to receive membership dues and donations. With these funds, the Alliance is able to donate approximately $12,000 every year to the Harwood Museum of Art to be used as the Director deems necessary; to make funds available for membership-sponsored events; and to contribute $5,000 each year toward a purchase of art for the Museum.

"Ms. Wright Penn plays Pippa in Rebecca Miller's new comedy of manners, and her character's age matters because she's having a midlife crisis and a marital crisis all at once. Her much older husband (Alan Arkin) has moved them from New York into an upscale Connecticut retirement community, and that's just for starters. Pippa doesn't break down but she's acting out in strange ways without even knowing it. Ms. Wright Penn has made the women she has played memorable, but nearly all were secondary.
In fact, I guess the question is how different (or not) the Taos real estate market might be? Or, are we losing buyers to other ski areas where prices are more attractive?

It's still a good story, but one person's statement that she rented a home in Taos, but didn't like the arid climate or the landscape was interesting. I guess everyone has their idea of natural beauty. I guess it's possible she didn't like sagebrush and didn't drive the Enchanted Circle, or just venture into Taos Canyon. Oh well, it's getting crowded here anyway.

Listing Photos and Virtual Tours – Poor Taos Practices

I don't do listings, only buyer brokerage and consulting services for buyers and sellers. I start with that because I want it clear that I have nothing to gain by jumping on my soapbox and providing information about poor listing practices, nor will companies or individuals be named.

We have a small MLS and there isn't a huge amount of competition here, so maybe those are a couple of reasons why listing brokers can continue to provide mediocre services for high dollar commission. In putting up a price change alert today, I noticed a home over $500k that had been reduced three times in price, and it only had three exterior photos. I was really feeling sorry for the seller for paying a high commission for such poor property presentation until I saw that it was owned by the broker...so they're getting what they deserve.

But, this prompted me to take another look at all of the residential listings currently active (873 of them) to see how they fared for images and virtual tours. Here are some bullet points:

303, or 35% had less than the maximum 9 allowed photos of the listed home.

90, or 10.3% had 4 or fewer photos.

24, or 2.7% had either no photo at all or just one.

A whopping 749, or 86%, had no virtual tour link in the listing.

Sorry sellers, but why do you put up with this? This is especially true in today's technology world when virtual tours are either free or a few bucks each. And, with digital cameras, why would there not be enough about your home worth taking 9 easy, fast and free pictures? In that group with zero or only 1 image, almost half were over $300k, with at least one listed at more than $1.2 million.
