Gary’s vision of spreading EFT to every person on the planet has reached a vast audience in barely 12 years thanks to the power of the Internet and the fact that EFT is so profoundly simple and effective.

We will always acknowledge Gary Craig as the founder of EFT even as we stand on the solid foundation he leaves us with to reach more people around the world. His smiling, warm face will be missed beaming out at us from the oh-so-frequent EFT Insights newsletter.

May we always remember that Gary’s goal in spreading EFT was to help the world achieve peace through granting each individual their emotional freedom.

Thanks Gary!Related Posts:

Lindsay Kenny shares her insights into overcoming procrastination with EFT. Find the simple causes that have you procrastinating including the two primary emotions and how to over come them with EFT.

It seems one of the themes in the EFT world in the last month has been Procrastination. I wrote how to use EFT for Procrastination and Lindsay Kenny also released a spectacular audio interview about procrastination as part of the launch of the Tapping Insiders Club.

Lindsay’s talk covered how simple it can be to overcome procrastination and included:

The most common causes for procrastination and how to figure out if any of these are effecting you

The two emotions that are typically behind procrastination (you’ll be surprised by one of them!)

Tapping statements that you can use immediately to get results

This interview is definitely worth listening to. It’s one of those “kick in the butt” things we all need to listen to from time to time.

SFBT, developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, is a simple yet powerful approach based on identifying what you want, where evidence of the solution is appearing in your life already, and what would be externally observable signs of progress.

SFBT is based on the idea that no problems occurs always all the time. Even for an alcoholic, there are some days when they drink less than others so investigate what is different about those days when the problem is less and do more of that as opposed to searching through your past to find the reason that may or may not be the cause of the behaviour.

SFBT’s efficacy is well established and supported by a solid and ever increasing body of research. Solution-focused thinking is widely accepted in the fields of therapy, social care, education and business. This book, The Solutions Focus: Making Coaching and Change Simple, was my original introduction to solutions-focused thinking.

EFT, in my opinion, in unparalleled in its ability to heal past events such as trauma and abuse and I find combining SFBT with EFT is incredibly effective when moving forward into the future. I have found it useful in areas such as business improvements, wealth creation, depression, serious disease and weight loss. Here are some of the insights I achieve when I applied one of the questions to issues around money.

The standard EFT approach to achieving your goals is to search in your past for events that have lead to limiting beliefs (“writing on your walls”) that are holding you back from want you want. This is based on Gary Craig’s NLP training which the concept of limiting beliefs is a part of.

But how long to you keep looking in the past for answers? Focusing on the past can itself be used as a diversion from taking real action to move you towards what you want. SFBT helps identify small concrete signs that you are actually making progress.

Do you find yourself procrastinating when you need to get things done? Use the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to address the underlying emotions and thought patterns of procrastination, and develop an awareness of the choice of action in each moment. Being a procrastinator is a habit you can break.

I’ve been meaning to write about procrastination for some time but I just haven’t got around to it… sound familiar?

Procrastination came be obvious and subtle. There is procrastination where you set aside time to do something and then consciously do something else in that time. This might be acceptable once or twice but more than that and you are procrastinating.

Then there’s the more subtle form of procrastination where you think right, “I’m going to get this task done now” and the very next thought is a distraction such as, “but I’ll just check my email/facebook/twitter before I start”. This momentary distraction leads off on a tangent that you only return from some time later with another thought of right, “now I’ve really got to get this done” followed by another thought of “but first I’ll put that load of washing on and sort something out for dinner” and the pattern repeats.

I don’t necessarily believe that procrastination is about lack of will power or discipline. Yes you can use these brute force approaches to grit your teeth, force yourself to do things, and beat yourself up when you don’t get things done but I prefer a more gentle approach of using EFT to work on the emotions underneath the behaviour and building a habit of getting things done.

So how can EFT help you with procrastination?

First identify an important task or project that you have been procrastinating getting started. The sort of thing that you know needs to be done but you just haven’t got around to doing. Make sure it a specific well defined task of some importance. Write that task down and have it handy to look at while you do the following tapping sequence. You can use this EFT Tapping Points Guide.

Karate Chop
Point:

Even though I keep procrastinating instead of getting this task done, I want to accept myself.
Even though, whenever I sit down to get started on this task, there always seems to be something more important to do first, I choose to become even more aware of this habit.
Even though I’m annoyed at myself for not getting this task done but sometimes feel like I’m powerless to do anything differently, I choose to accept myself anyway.

Top of Head:

Can’t get this tasked started

Eyebrows:

Always seems to be something else wanting my attention

Side of Eyes:

Sometimes I’m not even aware that I’m procrastinating

Under Eyes

Got to get this done

Under Nose:

Frustrated at myself

Chin Point:

I should be stronger, more focused, more disciplined, have stronger will power

Collarbones:

Why aren’t I more focused?

Under Arms:

Maybe I’ve got ADD/ADHD; but probably not

Wrists:

So frustrated and annoyed at myself

Continue on for another round to target some of the thought patterns that accompany procrastination:

Top of Head:

All the excuses I can come up with for not getting this task done, like:

Eyebrows:

There’s more I need to know before I can begin

Side of Eyes:

I haven’t thought it all through yet

Under Eyes

What if I don’t do it right? I have to do it perfectly the first time.

Under Nose:

I’ll look at it again tomorrow

Chin Point:

I just not motivated right now

Collarbones:

I’m too tired, hungry, awake, hungover, low on caffeine

Under Arms:

It’s a Monday, Tuesday, any day ending in ‘y’

Wrists:

It can wait. I work better under pressure.

Now some tapping to develop the habit of noticing yourself procrastinating and recognising the choice you have in that moment.

Karate Chop
Point:

Even though I can always find something else to do, I choose to notice when my attention is distracted.
Even though, when I start to do this task, my mind fills with other things I want to do, I choose to catch myself before I make a move away from what I need to get done.
Even though I think of myself as an expert procrastinator, I choose become even more expert at noticing when I start to become distracted and choose to respond differently when I notice myself procrastinating and bring my attention gently back to the task I want to get done.

Eyebrows:

Noticing when my attention drifts

Side of Eyes:

Catching myself in the gap between thought and action

Under Eyes

Becoming even more aware when my thoughts wander

Under Nose:

Catching myself as those other thoughts come up

Chin Point:

Asking myself is that really more important than this, or can it wait

Collarbones:

Gently guiding my attention back to getting this task done

Under Arms:

Wanting to get this task completed

Wrists:

Feeling good as I get things done and break that old habit of procrastination

Like doing physical exercise, motivation is not needed to start exercising if we realise that motivation comes from that act of starting to exercise. Once we start we remember how much we enjoy it and continue on with the activity.

Our behaviour is shaped by our actions even more so than our thoughts. If you consistently take action you become that person. Use the above tapping consistently to break your habit of procrastinating and enjoy the satisfaction and pride of becoming someone who gets things done.Related Posts:

When we stumble across the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) for the first time it seems to explode into our world and we apply it with gusto to every issue we have and evangelistically promote it to everyone we know. Yet it can be easy to dismiss EFT as just another new age fad that has come and will go. Yet the origins of EFT date back to the early 1970s giving it a strong foundation of nearly 40 years!

Dr. Patricia Carrington recently outlined the foundations of EFT in her Meridian Tapping Times newsletter:

“The history of meridian tapping began with Dr. George Goodheart, a leading chiropractor who found he could use acupuncture points beneficially for physical conditions by just “tapping” on them (no needles were needed!)

An Australian psychiatrist, John Diamond, M.D., then took this discovery a step further. He began using verbal affirmations as the patient was stimulating the acupuncture points. This was a major step forward as it introduced a psychological tool into the process. But still the treatment method lacked a cohesive “engine” to drive it forward with real effectiveness. That engine was supplied by Dr. Roger Callahan, an American psychologist specializing in anxiety disorders.

Dr. Callahan’s contribution was immense and has been well documented. Through his interest in acupuncture and his awareness of the use of the value of tapping on acupoints, he made a key discovery upon which all later meridian tapping methods are based. Callahan found that if a person is focusing on a specific fear at the time they tap, that fear can be removed, often permanently. He developed his discovery into a complete system and concluded that there was a correct tapping sequence for every emotional issue, and that this could be determined for each individual through the use of muscle testing. He called these tapping sequences “algorithms” and his treatment later became known as Thought Field Therapy, or TFT.

Dr. Callahan’s work, although brilliant and groundbreaking, was however quite complex and difficult to master because different algorithms were required for each one of the numerous disorders studied.

The next step was the creation of simplified versions of Callahan’s technique. These were known as “single algorithm techniques” (i.e. they did not require diagnosis or muscle testing). My own early method, Acutap, was one of the very first single algorithm methods, predating EFT by about seven years and there may have been others who devised similar adaptations of Callahan’s method.

Then, in the 1990’s, quite independently arrived at and without his knowledge of any former single-algorithm method, one of Roger Callahan’s star pupils, Gary Craig, unveiled a major development of the meridian tapping techniques which he called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Today his single algorithm method, EFT, leads the world in the development and teaching of the meridian tapping approach to healing.

It is interesting to note that the meridian tapping techniques are now moving beyond EFT as highly skilled experts create tapping approaches that are beginning to differ from Official EFT in many respects. This is an exciting development that promises to grow in a spirit of friendly cooperation between all these methods, as they become better known throughout the world.”

So EFT has evolved by standing on the shoulders of giants – and, continues to evolve. Gary Craig always says that, “we are on the ground floor of the healing high rise” so it’s an exciting time to be involved in the field.

What about you? Even if you’re not a practitioner, have you come up with some new approaches, new shortcuts, or new ways of using EFT on yourself? Let me know in the comments.Related Posts:

We often ask "what's wrong with me?" yet a more useful question is "what works for me?" Is there an area of your life that would benefit from more focused attention? It can be difficult to notice what works in our busy-day lives and you can use the Emotional Freedom Technique EFT to help.

One of the most popular articles I have written is “What’s wrong with you?” While many of us have asked that question of ourselves and have been asked it by others, how many of us focus on what works for us?

What works for you is a solutions-focused question that moves you into a different way of thinking. It helps you focus on and notice what your own unique solutions are. Your own unique solutions may not be the same as everyone else’s and they may not be same as touted by such-and-such an expert. Figuring out what works for you requires you to become an expert on your own life. And this requires paying attention.

For example, there are thousands of diets out there each claiming that they will produce miraculous results. Yet most of these diets work well for a percentage of people but not everyone. That’s because we each have a unique metabolic type that determines the balance of carbohydrates and proteins that we need to eat, how fast our bodies metabolise sugar, and how often we need to eat. You metabolic type also determines the type of exercise and what time of day to exercise will work best for you.

If you pay attention to how you feel 1 hour after a meal (e.g. are you alert or unfocused, are you hungry again or not, are you emotionally stable or experiencing mood swings) and you experiment with different combinations of foods, size of portions, time between feeds, then over time you can figure out the way to eat and what to eat that best suits you.

This does require attention and careful observation which sometimes seems too much trouble so we search for a quick answer from the latest magazine diet, book, TV expert, or Google.

But this post is not just about your diet.

What about what works for you in terms of being creative or getting your best work done? Are you most creative in the mornings or the evenings? Again this requires attention and experimentation. I know from experience that I’m much better at writing things in the morning, like I’m doing right now, than later in the afternoon or at night. After lunch, I know that I’m better at tasks that don’t require creativity or focus and concentration. Are there some times of day which suit you better for writing and others that suit you for making phone calls?

What about relationships? You know there are ways to broach subjects with those you care about that can lead to useful discussions and there are ways to pick a fight. Become conscious of what happens when you say things in a certain way, with a certain tone of voice, using certain words. Is this being manipulative? That depends on the intention with which you enter into the conversation. If you intention is to ‘get your own way’ then yes it is manipulative (think children) but if you intention is to enjoy the relationship in the best way possible then it is more about love.

What stops us from paying attention?

Western lifestyles, in general, are full of noise and distractions. From the moment we wake up in the morning to the time we close our eyes at night we are immersed in a sea of noise and distraction. The radio wakes us up, the TV is on in the background, the kids are screaming the back yard, the radio is on the car going to work, there are phones calls and emails to answer, meals to cook, errands and shopping to be done, etc (feel exhausted, yet? Sorry.) Tibetan Buddhism actual calls this “Western busyness”.

So how can we use EFT to help increase our ability to pay attention within the noisiness of everyday life?

Identify an area of your life that you want to focus and pay attention to. Maybe it’s your eating habits, your creativity, or your relationship with someone. Most likely it is something that is weaved throughout your day.

When you have identified a specific area, use this EFT tapping guide and tap along as follows:

Karate Chop
Point:

Even though life is so busy and noisy and I find it hard to notice what is important to me, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though I’m supposed to believe what all the experts say on TV, in magazines, on the internet, I want to pay attention and notice what works for me. Even though I’m not sure I can trust my own wisdom, I’m choosing to tune in on this specific area of my life and notice what works for me.

Top of Head:

Too busy and noisy to notice what matters to me.

Eyebrows:

Too rushed to pay attention.

Side of Eyes:

I don’t want to have to think about yet another thing to get right.

Under Eyes

It’s so much easier to abdicate to the so-called experts out there.

Under Nose:

I’m not as smart as those experts. They all know more than I do.

Chin Point:

So much noise and distraction that I would need to block out to notice what works.

Collarbones:

What if I try something and things get worse rather than better.

Under Arms:

I’m not sure I can take that risk.

Wrists:

I’m not sure I can notice what works for me.

Continue for another round.

Top of Head:

Too busy, too noisy, too tired to pay attention.

Eyebrows:

Asking my brain to pay attention for me.

Side of Eyes:

Are there some days that work better than others?

Under Eyes

This area of my life is important to me and I’m becoming even more of an expert on me

Under Nose:

Giving myself permission to experiment and try different things. Making mistakes and developing wisdom.

Chin Point:

Some days I’m just on autopilot and forget to remember to notice what’s working for me.

Collarbones:

I’ll notice again today. Noticing when I feel better. Noticing when things work better.

Under Arms:

I want to pay even more attention to this area of my life.

Wrists:

As I pay attention and notice more of what works, I’m feeling even more grateful, accepting, and compassionate towards myself.

After tapping the above sequence, you may have come up with your own ideas that will help you notice what works. It could be things like keeping a diary, making notes in your mobile phone or sending yourself emails. Let me know how paying attention has helped you in the comments.Related Posts:

Melbourne had a Tapping Man long before I started using EFT tapping to help people. Turn's out he even use to live on the same street as I did for many years.

In a lot of online communities I use the moniker “the tapping man” as all one word, “thetappingman”. Recently, I searched the internet for “Melbourne Tapping Man” and came across a Melbourne icon.

Melbourne's Original Tapping Man

This original Melbourne Tapping Man greeted children and shoppers from the 1930’s to the 1970’s at L.P. Alexander’s on busy Swanston Street (where I have run my practice for the last 3 years!). He disappeared for a while and was found years later very dirty and broken. Mr. J. B. Reid, then Chairman of James Hardie Industries, cared for, restored, and clothed the Tapping Man and donated him to the National Trust of Australia.

Now days, the Tapping Man resides in the window of Haigh’s Chocolates in the Block Arcade and continues to greet Melburnians and tourists alike.Related Posts:
