So there I was drinking my 4th coffee of the day, when it suddenly struck me that I have not done a post giving information on one aspect of our business that makes us unique and is after all our USP (Unique selling point – to use the official lingo). Sure I have put up many posts showing you what we offer as stock items or even how you can utilise them to suit your needs, but never really gone into the area of converted tapes.

Seems a little strange to say the least, especially when you consider that the company name is derived from merging these 2 words together.

So what exactly are converted (die-cut) tapes? Basically they are tapes that have been converted from their original format into a bespoke custom shape or format.

What different ways can tape be converted? The options are endless, from something simple like rewinding into small rolls through to bespoke die cutting into elegant shapes.

Why have tapes converted? People have their own reasons for having tapes converted but most commonly it is for reduced wastage / speedier production / more aesthetically pleasing product.

Many people are very surprised at how relatively cheaply this can be done, sure there are sometimes tooling charges if it’s a new shape (although we have several thousand available as standard). Although more often than not the cost is usually recovered in other areas (either by reducing wastage or streamlining production).

Below are a couple of conversion jobs we have produced:

Copper tape die-cut for use in emergency services electrical communication devices.

Double sided foam pads with a 5mm hole punched in it’s centre.

As you will see from the examples above the shape can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, the possibilities are virtually endless.

I hope this has given a little insight into what can be achieved, if you require any further information just ask tapegeek.

Have you heard of velcro or hook & loop? I’m going to put myself out there and say you have!!

It’s been around for years and used everywhere, whether it’s mounting point of sale in shops, facilitating an easy fastening mechanism on children’s shoes or coats. Or even for holding nappies (diapers for my American readers) together, it really is a product of a thousand uses and more…but….have you heard of dual lock? NO!

It works on a similar principle to velcro in the sense you have two opposing sides that engage in order to attach things and is also suitable for another thousand uses.

Ok, they both work in a similar way and offer the same functionality so why does the title say dual lock wins hands down? Well, I only said they were similar and that is true in the sense of their suitable to so many different jobs, but where velcro (hook & loop) has a male (hook) side and a female (loop) side dual lock has only one side. This in itself is a great feature as it means you don’t have to worry that you have equal amounts of hook and loop, you can simply cut to your required size and it self engages.

The most common deciding factor to use dual lock is that the strength is several times greater than even heavy duty Velcro. It’s not only the engagement strength though, dual lock also offers a much higher strength adhesive, none more so than the 3M SJ3550, this product actually incorporates the super high strength VHB tape that is used in place of rivets, screws and welds. This adhesive makes the product ideally suited to high load applications and is more than capable of performing outdoors as well as indoors.

So this is why we have decided to make this product available to you, now usually we introduce a new product then increase the variations available as they are requested.

Not this time, we already offer the product in rolls, metres and pre cut pads.

Want to know more? Check out the specification sheet here

However, it has to be said that many of our readers are subscribed through the RSS feeds and so would not know that it was a new look blog.

So what’s so special about the new blog I hear you say (apart from the obvious aesthetically pleasing appearance tweaks)… Well to start with there is a whole new exciting forum section, designed to offer assistance to all members this area is specifically designed for you to ask the advice of other members.

Why not check it out, maybe you can offer some advice of your own!

It’s still brand new so it will take a little time to get the formatting spot on, so if there is a topic or section you would like to see then just let me know.

As I have mentioned a few times previously it’s great knowing what my products are used for, but nothing really compares to seeing pictures showing my products in actual working conditions.

Has it really been almost a month since my last blog posting?

Well, there you go sorry about that although to be fair I haven’t been spending this time idle. No doubt you have already noticed that the website has had a facelift. In fact we have changed the whole blog and in this change we have incorporated some new ideas and other improvements that I hope will be a benefit to everyone who visits.

First off you will notice a few spaces for advertising opportunities, this will mean that worthy companies will be able to advertise themselves to you. Then we have also rearranged the posts into much easier to navigate sections (as well as deleting a few redundant ones).

Finally I would like to get your opinions on something else, as you know we currently offer the share the moment section for those of you who wish to provide photos of the tapes being used. This has proved popular and I’m thinking we can build on this by offering the ability to have you the readers add to the site.

So what does this mean? Well basically if you have a tips or ideas of ways in which to use tapes then you can submit the information yourself to other people that share your interests! I think this will make the site a massively useful resource for people with all manner of interests.

Please leave a comment with your thoughts or alternatively use our contact page

The short answer is YES, if you choose your product wisely then it most definitely is, our new super strength clear acrylic bonding tape is the answer.

How can a tape be better than a mechanical fixing?

Simple really, where as a screw or rivet etc joins things in one point. Our acrylic bonding tape joins them across the whole of the joint therefore spreading the stress load across this whole area (hence a stronger more lasting bond is attained).

I thought you’d like a little sneak peek at the newest addition to the product range. It’s a double sided tape unlike any other, formulated to have such high strength it’s used in place of rivets and spot welds!! Yes, it’s THAT strong.

So obviously it’s widely used in the automotive industry as well as construction and signage to name but a few, offering very high bond strength as well as being able to withstand high temperatures and UV.

I am just working on getting this uploaded to the site, I’m also hoping to get a video put together for it if time permits. In the meantime I thought I’d give you a heads up on it. So if you have any jobs coming up where you were considering rivets or spot welds (or maybe you just have a demanding application) then keep your eyes peeled for the launch and obviously more detailed info.

Being a lover of gadgets, the email I received from Enrique in spain (a new customer) was extremely interesting.

He purchased the copper tape to act as an antenna on his light aircraft, apparently the tape is perfect for this application due to the fact it weighs so little. The pictures don’t show the full plane but give a clear visual indication of exactly how he has utilised the tape to construct himself a dipole antenna.

The pictures illustrate the vertical dipole antenna with copper tape applied to thin plywood ready to place in the vertical rudder.

As always I must thank Enrique for his time in providing these, it’s so helpful to be able to post them to the blog so that others may be assisted by them. I’m also happy to attach this link to his specialised blog which having visited I must say is full of useful information / tips & videos!

* Please note that use of the copper tape as an antenna is made in reference to the tail being of wood/fibreglass/wood fabric/wood poly-fibre construction. If your tail is made from metal/composite graphite/carbon you will need to test for suitability.
