the egotistical, self-absorbed adolescent game that we call the art ~~world~~ market really doesn't make sense and isn't pushing humankind forward. It is irresponsible in that it squanders resources, energy, and money on the half-baked ideas of a handful of ~~egoists~~ monsters.

Interview with Ebor Sisk, Author of "Platypus Down"

Berlin Review of Books and Letters: Thank you for joining us today, Ebor Sisk. Your latest book, "Platypus Down," has been garnering a lot of attention. Could you tell us a little about what inspired you to write this book?

Ebor Sisk: Thank you for having me. "Platypus Down" is a work of fiction, but it is inspired by my experiences living in Eastern Europe. I wanted to explore the complex cultural and political dynamics of the region, and the way in which history and memory shape people's lives.

BRBL: The book is described as a "narrative puzzle." Could you explain what that means and how you went about creating it?

ES: Well, the book is structured as a series of interconnected stories, each of which can be read on its own, but which also fit together to create a larger narrative. The stories are told from the perspective of different characters, and each one reveals a different piece of the puzzle. I wanted to create a sense of mystery and intrigue, so that the reader would be constantly trying to piece together the larger story.

BRBL: One of the most intriguing aspects of the book is the way in which it blurs the line between reality and fiction. The narrator of the book is named Ebor Sisk, which is also your name. Can you explain the relationship between yourself and the narrator?

ES: (Laughs) Yes, that's a question I get a lot. The truth is, the narrator is a fictional character, but he shares some similarities with me. Like me, he is an Eastern European writer who has spent a lot of time thinking about the region's history and politics. But he is also very different from me in many ways. For one thing, he's much more cynical than I am!

BRBL: The book deals with some heavy themes, such as trauma, memory, and the weight of history. How did you approach writing about these topics?

ES: It was definitely a challenge. I think the key was to approach these themes with empathy and compassion, and to try to understand how they affect people on a personal level. I also tried to avoid being too didactic or preachy. I wanted to present the issues in a way that would allow readers to draw their own conclusions.

BRBL: So what are you working on next?

ES: I'm currently working on a two-book project, "Platypus Hide" and a working title "Platypus Cast." It's another set of stories, each with their own narrator, but with a different structure. The stories are more intertwined and interconnected than "Platypus Down," but they still maintain that element of mystery and intrigue. I am in no great hurry, not like this Elon. More like this James Cameron... a sculptor of books... books that are NOT for YOU. (Winks)

BRBL: We look forward to reading them. Thank you for your time, Ebor Sisk.

granted, I'm a total sucker for a pristine sheet of acid-free cotton art paper, but in the third dimension I usually I tend to see everything as sculptural elements or items and therefore 'suffer' from an imaginary condition which I have come to call "SCULPTURAL bias" I have a habit of making art out of whatever is at hand - .

which I suppose leads us to process...

I used to disregard process, I couldn't stand / didn't care about the hyperneurotic microdetails of someone's journey towards product, but now... not I think I kind of love it.

For example, the process is an adventure - in my case an urban adventure which starts with finding treasue and which leads to making a mess, cleaning it up, and THEN (mayyybe even) calling it 'art') but if not then who cares

FOR EXAMPLE while biking through Neukölln I found a roll of pristine cork - like for a bulletin board, and paired it with rivets and leftover housepaint and found glitter to arrive at a start - what becomes the first steps of a work in progress - which might take months, there is a lot of back burner THIS:

but of course before all that I was making #lockdownSCULPTURES - firing hand-made clay way to soon (wet) and too thick in our coal ovens at home - the antiquated (ancient!) elements which still heat my Berlin apartment (built in the early 1870s) NOTE: clay grafefully aquired at ceramic kingdom Berlin (who made it available for pickup all during the covid-19 pandemic so that ceramicists and sculptors could still work at home. anyhow, interesting outcomes - here are some of those poor, unfortunate souls from the CONTAINMENT series who provided the basis for the SCULPTURALbias (digital) sculpture series I am not developing:

best ceramics studio in berlin: ceramic kingdom

As an artist and sculptor with +25 experience I was looking for a place to re-focus on the medium of ceramics, and ceramic kingdom is by far the best ceramics studio in Berlin. Their staff are actually artists each with years - if not decades of experience, and the facilities have been thought-out from top to bottom - designed from scratch to work for both the working artists and beginner clay enthusiasts, everyone's needs have been carefully considered and accomodated. Some other ceramics workshops small operations who do a good job of catering to hobbyists and they are mostly fine, but if you look closely you can see that nearly all of the other studios them got their start at ceramic kingdom, so if you want to go to the source for an excellent artistic experience with clay in Berlin, I'd highly recommend starting with ceramic kingdom whether you are a total beginner or looking to give your base knowledge a boost, (or re-learn as I am) - ceramic kingdom is the best clay workshop I have found in Berlin because it focuses on artistic creation (not lifestyle fluff, which some recent pop-up business plan studios are doing).
The studio also offers one-on-one sesssions, group classes, glaze lab courses and kiln firings.

the drawing is an essentially digital work painstakingly constructed pixel by pixel which dances the surreal line between fun and creepy - essentially bringing a (smiling?) beast to life - but just barely - a creature which would never otherwise exist and might also be soon extinct.

*this artwork is a part of the rough CENTURY (on the internet) series. the title is a huge, head-bobbing nod to a classic Bert and Ernie sketch on Sesame Street.

Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie on the trouble with millennial students

FILE UNDER: I'll just leave this right here for eternity... CONTEXT: A few months back Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie wrote an essential essay on her personal website but I can no longer find it... Anyhow I did manage to copy a snippet - her issues with some of her students is just sooo spot-on - here is the except I preserved: "In certain young people today like these two from my writing workshop, I notice what I find increasingly troubling: a cold-blooded grasping, a hunger to take and take and take, but never give; a massive sense of entitlement; an inability to show gratitude; an ease with dishonesty and pretension and selfishness that is couched in the language of self-care; an expectation always to be helped and rewarded no matter whether deserving or not; language that is slick and sleek but with little emotional intelligence; an astonishing level of self-absorption; an unrealistic expectation of puritanism from others; an over-inflated sense of ability, or of talent where there is any at all; an inability to apologize, truly and fully, without justifications; a passionate performance of virtue that is well executed in the public space of Twitter but not in the intimate space of friendship.
I find it obscene."
Another dear friend of mine whom I have known for decades runs a sucessful business in California - he is approaching his mid-40s and when the topic came up of millennials in the workplace, he said simply: they don't know how to pay their dues.
I think for the Gen X crowd this in an ongoing, deeply frustrating saga... which is not likely to improve.

The streets - the apartments across the street - the city services - all used to wake up and there was that daily bustle before and after sunrise (currently at 8:20-something a.m.), but now it just seems to be at a standstill - susupended animation, a metropolis in waiting and a society so smacked around by sickness and rules that my proud motto is: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ annnd I am sooo o.k. with that... and having said that, I also don't feel qualified to write or say anything about anything anymore, really. Pretty content to just ebb and flow and focus on such supremely simple life things - family, friends, food... very at peace with that... Take it or leave it but leave it is fine and take it takes a lot of time and energy, so maybe we conserve that for staying healthiy and happy... ALL OF IT... the speed, the acceleration, the road to nowhere of everything we were ever doing... Ten yers ago or so I went on a tirade when a Dutch artist friend of a friend was over dinner - I don't remember the trajectory of the tirade, but I do remember the conclusion where I said: "Man, the Netherlands! I would've loved to live there..." "Why?" He asked raising and eyebrow as if he'd heard this one: "Because of the WEED?" He taunted smiling. "NO." I shook my head answering without even thinking: "Because things make SENSE there." There is something deeply calming, anchoring, when the society you live in makes SENSE... and when it does not - for ALLLLLL the reasons - gotta get this to get that to get there because gotta. That it just nuts and when like it based on NUTS. on BANANAS... ugh, it is nauseating. and there you have it: America. So. *whew* lockdown. Covid-19. Coronavirus. for me here in Berlin this slammed on the breaks... and I see the value in that - albeit highly priveledeged. I was able to stop, look around, look at myself - unavoidable look at myself... look at life, look at what was truly meaningful and valuable and now we are going from there... no concerts? ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ already seen a thousand. Movie TV internet? ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ Sure! or NOT. (usually NOT) Grew a bit of an attention span back, but also got ahold of a Netflix login - take it or leave it and/or put on Star Trek: the Next Generation in the kitchen while I chop vegetables. Sometimes. OR NOT. Watch-listen to classical concerts from the world's greatest Philharmonies - or not - make a bucket list of things to see IRL as wanted... talk to the cat. A lot. The point is: All is well... all this LETTING GO releaseing of pressure - freed of all that NEED and mandatory self flatulation... (is that the right term? NOTE: no, it is actually self flagellation.) but it took awhile. Maybe it is the onset of middle age... maybe it is all the forced downtime of all the Berlin Lockdowns of 2020-2021...

A calmer year

2018 saw us settling into middle age with relief, I'd say - our metabolism shave slowed and our gray hairs keep popping up seemingly overnight... But the great part of all this? It is fine!
All the hectic mess of your 20s and existential mindfuckery of your thirties all just seems to slow to a crawl around 40 and then you want a warm alcoholic drink to balance out the cold, dark winter (but not more than two because then you'll be hungover for half the weekend.) yea... Something like that.
Also there is no Star Wars movie this winter - which is a relief! Somehow the Last Jedi brought closure to my +35 year obsession and I can now shop online for a gym membership which I won't end up buying and just keep alternating between ginger-lemon and green tea...
I expect very little from 2019 other than to live comfortable and be ever-more ok with my life and my place in the universe... Not to sound too much like a hallmark card but my life is good and I feel blessed. Yay-!

moves, smells, and seconds are rolling around in batshit.

when there is no way to kill time properly there is always netflix - the opium of the 20-teens. ever since the streaming streamt...
well, there you are missing parties because you passed out watching STAR TREK DISCOVERY and struggling to explain what the eff happened (to yourself, to others, to the so-called universe) and resume a well-intentioned but half-assed video project...
with every intention of honig it down, of course of course.
the latest eternal mantra of every gen x/y american: "it's fine. everything is fine." falls flat on its face and in just a few shot years size 32 waist graduated for 33, 34 skips 35 completely - because who knew trhey even made those - and is headed towards 36... like a football player the size of a refridgerator (nicknamed 'the refridgerator') running in exremely slow, apatethic motion towards no goal at all.
that's the freedom.

that, and (in the most boring news possible) the cursor on the screen fails to revel itself on most occasions.
