Take Chico for example.

He’s the ‘overweight’ chihuahua (he’s working his way back to ‘normal’, of course everyone says it’s ‘my fault’ since I got him fixed and he gained weight…sorry Chico)…so we go for 3 or 4 walks a day. He weighs about 8 lbs and is full of energy and fight. He wants to battle anyone that comes in his way and will bark, hair stands up on his back. He defends what is his, even I who feeds him can’t put my hands down while he’s eating or he’ll growl. In personal and business, shouldn’t we defend what’s ours?

Chico is a determined little guy when he finds something on the walk he wants. He’ll tug and pull hoping that the leash is just a bit longer or that I’ll allow him to get to whatever he has his eyes set on. Often times, he loses the battle…I mean he is only 8 lbs, so he’s easily led away from something if need be. Are we pulled away from things we have our mindset on in life or business by someone else’s ‘pulling’?

Meanwhile he has to ‘mark’ his ‘territory’ every few steps of the mile walk. Which got me thinking, are we leaving our ‘mark’ in life and our business? Will people we’ve known remember us later on, did we leave some type of ‘mark’ on their life? (hopefully a good one!) Likewise, with business…are we leaving our ‘mark’ (brand) with potential clients? Will they remember the business, what’s offered? Dogs are so intent on leaving their mark, so shouldn’t we?

Then, there’s JD (my red doberman-though some will say he’s not mine since he’s not in my apartment..but I say he’s mine because he’s my ‘baby puppy’..okay so he’s 7 1/2 yrs old..he’s still mine…I’ve nursed him back to health few times now from near death, so that makes him mine!)

Now, JD is near impossible to walk unless he has a choker on. He will literally drag me down the street, even when I have leash wrapped around behind my waist for leverage. He’s strong and determined and nothing’s going to stop him from going where he wants to go. Are we like that in our personal and business life…determined to get what we want and able to get to the goal even if it means ‘dragging’ someone or something to get to it?

JD has a soft side to him, where he’ll play and act like a huge puppy…laying on his back, paw over his face!
He knows how to have fun and enjoy life and isn’t always dead set on “business”. Do you know how to just kick back and enjoy life and work?

JD can also be very focused, when need be. He knows what he wants and will focus on that.

He’ll also “open his mouth” if need be. Do you “open yours” and let people know what’s going on in your life and what your business has to offer? Do you let people know if you need something or can do something for them?

JD is full of ‘character’ and has personality, he is the best of both worlds…determined, focused, strong yet sensitive, and playful, fun and loving.

Then there’s Romeo.

Romeo is easily excited and defends his space but is also laid back and timid in some instances. He’s not really keen to Chico. Even though he’s about 3 times the size of Chico, he stays his distance. Do we do that to people in our lives and business that we don’t exactly feel comfortable around? Are we leary of situations even though technically we’re ‘bigger’ than the situation? Do we let small things rule where we go or how we act, send us into ‘hiding’?

Romeo runs in circles, jumps, and acts like a spazz when he sees my daughter then will mellow after a few minutes. He will growl, bark and has ripped up the window screen trying to get to people at the front door though. He’s not really ‘focused’ on anything, just kinda laid back and content.

Is that how you are in your personal life or business? Just laid back, not really focused, not really into it?

Just some food for thought…or perhaps this is a sign that I’ve been spending too much time with dogs lately?
All I know is, I want to leave my ‘mark’, and stay focused, determined on what I want…

Chico, my daughters chihuahua, is on an exercise regimen now and walks 3x a day.
Sometimes our walks are “interesting and action packed”, other times not so much.

Sometimes we run across certain animals, reptiles, creepy crawly things on our way.
We’ve seen snails, and turtles and today I got to see all 8 lbs of Chico go crazy wanting to chase ducks.

He succeeded in making them run across the street.
Must be a ‘powertrip’ to be 1/3 of their size and make them go running.

Next stop was the lake where an iguana was relaxing on the wall.
You have to look really hard to see him right by the shadow of a tree in the water, because while Chico will gladly chase ducks, he’s not so keen on getting too close to iguana’s (and that’s fine w/me because I’m not either!)

Then, came the rain and off we went on our walk back…carefree, just taking our time, no reason to rush…
Though I do wonder why do dogs insist on walking in circles for a minute or so before they do their ‘business’ and end up where they started off to begin with. Can someone explain that?

Many people have said that you shouldn’t do business with friends or family. To some extent, I agree with that. But, if you make things perfectly clear you shouldn’t have any issues. Let the friends or family that you’re doing business with know outright that this is your business, you need to be paid for your service/time/product and conduct business as always…like your business.

If you’re in business and have people who work for you or perhaps you own a direct sales company and have consultants that work for you, you’ll want to ensure they know that you run your business as a business. There is no favoritism, there are no excuses, there is simply business…after all…business is business.

That said, that does not mean you shouldn’t be friends with people you do business with. There is a fine line, one that all parties involved need to be aware of and understand and respect.

There may be circumstances where a judgement call is needed regarding business and some leniency in a situation; however, if this happens on a regular basis you’ll need to address the issue and get back down to business.

You can’t please everyone all of the time…that’s just a disaster waiting to happen if you try.
It’s your business, you need to be able to do what has to be done to make it a success, to do right, to do beneficial things for the community.
If something isn’t profitable or cost effective, get rid of it.
If somebody isn’t producing and are costing you time or money, consider replacing them with someone who can do what’s required. Does that sound harsh? Perhaps, but reality is this…business is business.
If someone can’t do their duty, then you need to find someone who can, unless you enjoy paying people who are inept or incompetent.

Businesses close their doors when they don’t make executive decisions like when it’s time to downsize people or products that aren’t profitable to the business. If you’re in business, you need to make sure to run it as a business and know when it’s time to make business decisions that may or may not be understood by all but in the long run, when the day is over, it’s your business, your profits (or lack thereof) that you need to make the final decision on how your business is going to be run and do whatever it takes for that business to be profitable and succeed so you can continue on and be able to provide as well as help others (be it financial or otherwise).

Shall I blame it on Alfred Hitchcock??? (“The Birds”)

I don’t know but for whatever reason, they freak me out.

I remember when my son was 3 or 4 and he insisted he had to have parakeets. I gave in (being the good mommy I am lol) and got him 2 parakeets. Needless to say, we came home one day and they had escaped their cage but were still in the house. I was not about to touch one and get it back in the cage…I mean they have beaks and can peck ya know. So, I called a friend to come over and round them up. My son also decided at that point that birds weren’t the ideal pet and we gave them to the friend who captured them and off they went to a loving home.

Fast forward 16 years…I still do not like birds or ducks (yes I know ducks ARE birds, but they’re the big fat webbed feet kind so they have their own odd distinction with me).

Now, after today’s walk with Chico…I really do not like birds. We walk the same route 3 times a day every day and never had any problems with birds until today! Walking along and I know there’s a bird nest in one tree we have to walk under (it hangs over the sidewalk) and we usually walk quickly so as not to upset the birds. Well, apparently today we didn’t do something ‘right’ because as soon as we got near that particular area a bird came swooping down on me…could ‘feel’ it by my hair moving. Chico’s freaking out and trying to go after it, and me…I’m just trying to get the heck outta there. It didn’t matter though, that bird came diving down on us!!!!! He was relentless for about 20 yards…swoop down on me, fly away, swoop down on chico, fly away, hang out in tree for a minute then make another attempt on our lives (ok so that may be a bit dramatic). This is why I do not like birds…you can’t predict what they’re going to do, you can’t see them coming (they swoop quickly!) and I fear their beaks!

We finally get out of it’s target area, keep walking to the lake without any problems. So, I figure I’ll be ’smart’ and walk on the opposite side of the street to go back just to avoid the attack bird. That wasn’t good enough!!!! He came swooping down on us even on the opposite side of the street…and kept swooping down us!! Ok, this is not fun! I had to grab Chico and run with him and meanwhile yes I was screaming at the bird!!! Glad there was nobody on the street watching all this drama unfold…had to have been a sight to see!

And, now we’re home safe…but alas where am I going to walk Chico later? Or shall I go get a suit of armor for myself and chico?
