Anybody who knows me or follows my blog, knows that I am huge overly obsessed fan of  MAC and so Brittany went there to have her makeup done before her session. Aren’t those lashes so cool? On April 21 out studio will participate with an elite group of photographers around the country in a very special portrait promotion. On that day we will be providing a wonderful opportunity for you to update portraits of yourself and any family members you wish. In doing so, you will help to support Operation Smile, which provides free surgeries for children around the world who suffer from cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities.

Along with member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), we are offering the gift of an individual portrait session and a desk-size portrait in exchange for a $24 donation to PPA Charities, which has chosen Operation Smile as it’s charitable partner. For every 10 individuals we photograph, another child will receive the gift of surgery! It costs as little as $240 for Operation Smile’s medical volunteers to provide a life-changing surgery that can take as little as 45 minutes. 100% of each donation will go to Operation Smile.

We also believe that our Celebration of Smiles Day is a wonderful way to teach the value of reaching out to others. Even small children can understand the importance of Operations Smile’s work, and they are eager to help these needy children. We hope you will join us in helping to make this vital work possible, and we promise to create a portrait that you will love!! The sessions are open to anyone!! Adults in need of a new business headshot, seniors wanting a rocking pic for Facebook, kids, pets, you name it!!

We are doing the individual portrait sessions at a super cool spot right here in the Santa Clarita Valley, called Heritage Junction. It’s to the left of William S. Hart Park (where the large black train is). We love doing portrait sessions there and you can view a few pics of a family portrait session we did there recently.

We are still looking for some more models from the Class of 2013. You must be outgoing, fun,and want awesome pictures!! We want a wide range of individuals and you don’t have to be cheerleader or look like a model to get in! To start off, let me tell you a little about the portrait itself. The photographed Callie’s senior portrait session on location and everything was captured on my Canon 5D Mark II with 70-200mm F2.8 L Series lens (set at 135mm). For you technical folks : ISO 200, 250 @ F2.8. I used all available light (the sun) and a Larson Reflectasol with the soft silver side. They are great for adding a little extra sparkle & catch light in the eyes!

Starting with the first image labeled SOOC which stands for “straight out of camera”. So that particular picture has absolutely nothing done to it in terms of editing. No sharpening, no white balance, no added saturation, nothing. It’s a bit dark in exposure but not too far off. This is definitely something that I would never hand over as a finished product to a client or anyone else for that matter. It’s just too dark, drab, and overall blah (not my beautiful subject, just the image tones itself, of course).

On the the next one, labeled “before”. This photo has been given just a bit of Photoshop love. Some skin softening, some sharpening, a little bump to the overall exposure, added saturation, just overall tweaking on just about every level. This picture is beautiful but I wanted to add just a little bit of drama and “umph” than what is shown in the example.

Here in the final shot, I have done all the bells and whistles. It, to me anyway, looks like night and day compared to the original straight from camera picture. The skin tones are soft, warm, and beautiful, there is shape from soft shadowing and dimension to her face, the colors have a pop to them, it’s crisp and sharp but not overly sharpened, it has a texture and little more mood to it now.

Hanah brought along an awesome mix of all sorts of clothing which is another thing I absolutely recommend (especially for senior portrait sessions). I often find that the students tend to want one thing and the parents want something different (usually more classic and smiling) so I firmly believe you should do both. That way everyone is happy I love that she had an option that was more dressy (and HELLO! How cool is that dress?), a more laid back casual outfit with jeans and some hi-tops, and her edgy rockerish look towards the end with the braids and leather jacket. Super fun! here are a few of my favorite pictures from that morning!!

And Miss Isabelle? I mean, look at her- she must drive the boys crazy! And I think the “urban ballerina” might be one of my most favorite pictures!! Love, love, love it!! She was such a trooper walking up and down the street and all over in her cute tutu and toe shoes. I know it couldn’t be easy for her but she managed to do it anyway!

Both of the kids are into modeling and acting, so we did a few different clothing changes and looks for them. Such awesome kids! Enjoy…
