Day One of the #NourishYourSoul Experience at Canyon Ranch

I am at the beautiful Canyon Ranch resort in Tucson, Arizona for the Dove Nourish Your Soul retreat!!

My room is absolutely gorgeous...

and I was even greeted with lovely gifts from Dove upon my arrival in my room...

When I arrived the very first thing I got to do was go for a lovely late lunch with Laurie Jennings ( @lauriejennings - the Executive Editor at Chatelaine, Canada's #1 women's magazine) and Erica Diamond ( @WomenOnTheFence ) and a couple of the Dove contest winners.

I immediately learned that the food at Canyon Ranch is INCREDIBLE and the service is just amazing! It was great getting to know some of the ladies and to finally meet Erica in real life!

After our late lunch I checked out my room and then went to the pool with Laurie and one of the winners for a swim. The resort is just gorgeous and to be outside in this Arizona weather was an amazing thing for this Northern Canadian girl!

Last night we went out for an incredible supper and got to know each other a little better- what a great group of women!

Get Out of the "It's For Me" Mindset - Guest Post by Amy Bayliss

When we do something for ourselves alone, we will become consistently frustrated and unfulfilled. Even cleaning our home cannot be for us. We will not find contentment or satisfaction in only serving ourselves for our own agendas.

I clearly remember many times when I did things with the wrong intentions. In particular, I was previously married to a man who was not a follower of Christ. Several times during our marriage I specifically heard God speak to my heart to do certain things, like:

Write a new scripture on the refrigerator every week
Leave a Bible in the bathroom
Anoint the bedroom with oil and pray throughout it
Keep God's word (sermons) or worship playing at all times
Be completely submissive to my husband as long as it was in line with God's word

My thoughts were, "Great! That will certainly turn his heart!" While that may seem like a good thing, it wasn't. God showed me what my true intentions were. I desired for my former spouse to be a man of God, not for the sake of one of God's children turning to the heart of the Father and not for the sake of my boys' father going to heaven. Instead, my desire was that he become a man of God so that I would no longer be embarrassed to go to church alone or because I wanted to share the awesome stories of how my husband prayed for me and read the Bible to us on a daily basis. No, my heart didn't long for his salvation because God desired it or because it would save his soul. I desired it for selfish reasons. Our motives matter. We need to remain connected to the heart of the Father in order to know His heart.

Happy Mother's Day to Me!

The kids made me some great gifts at school this year. They were determined to keep them a surprise and the boys managed to do so until this morning. Olivia showed me hers yesterday but made me promise to act surprised this morning when she gave them to me again.

Special thanks to their teachers for making sure my kids made such wonderful gifts for me by the way!

Olivia made a few beautiful pictures. One was a flower that said "My love for you grows and grows and grows" and another was a picture of her and I holding hands.

She wanted me to "get dressed up" for my "special day" and the only dress I could come up with was a cotton sundress I have but she seemed ok with. Apparently I need to invest in a few more princess dresses.

Aiden painted a wooden butterfly to put in a garden. We don't have a garden but I assured him we would find a place to put it outside near our front step.

He also made a card type poster thing with his hands on one side and the other side has a picture of an Owl and and poem type thing.

The poem says

My mom like to hug me. my mom likes me, Owen, & my sister Olivia.
My mom works on the computer.

The Mom of the Year Award #MOTY

I don't think very many of us FEEL like Supermoms very often. In fact most of the time we feel like the complete OPPOSITE of a Supermom.

I am often surprised by how many of my mom-friends feel crappy about themselves and their skills as a mom because when I look at them I see how incredible they are. We are often much harder on ourselves than others are. We think we are the only ones who have dishes in the sink or a pile of laundry or who forgot to send that form back to school. Again.

One of the amazing gifts of the online community is learning that we really aren't the only one! It only takes an open admission of your latest imperfection on twitter or Facebook to discover that being human will not get you kicked out of the Supermom club. In fact- it is a requirement to be in the club in the first place!

Being a mom is hard work and Walmart wants to celebrate and recognize moms with their Mom of the Year Award.

About the Mom of the Year Award

This year Walmart is launching the Mom of the Year Award to help celebrate and recognize the huge contribution moms make as role models and integral members of the family and community. This award will become an annual program to celebrate all that Mom does and shine a light on what is important to her.
Nominations will be accepted Mother’s Day (May 13) through July 8, 2012 and can be submitted through www.momoftheyear.ca. They can come from daughters, sons, family members, friends, colleagues or community members.
Eight finalists will be selected and notified in mid-August and will be treated to an award celebration weekend in September. The Mom of the Year Award recipient will receive $10,000 for personal use and $100,000 to their cause or charity of choice. The remaining seven finalists will each receive $10,000 for personal use and $10,000 to their cause or charity of choice.

When I first heard about the Mom of the Year Award I thought about who I would nominate and the names of dozens of women came to mind. My life is filled with amazing women - both in real life and women I know only on line- who fit the category of Mom of the Year.

- Moms who deal with medically fragile children every day and continue to face each day with hope and optimism

- Single moms who don't have the support of a spouse and have to carry a very heavy load all on their own but rise to the challenge every single day

- Moms with physical or mental challenges of their own who care for their children despite daily pain and suffering

- Moms with children who have special needs who end up being advocates and therapists and teachers as well as parents

- Moms who have lost a child and have to continue to wake up each day and carry on as though a part of their heart has not been forever lost

- Foster moms who care for children that are only theirs for a relatively short time but who love them with their whole heart and then have to let them go to an unknown future

- and that doesn't even cover the dozens of "regular" moms who continue to get up every day and do wonderful things with their lives just because they can

My list of potential "Moms of the Year" is simply too long to list. I think if you look around you will see that there are a whole lot of potential "Mom of the Year" candidates in your life as well, so how about you take a minute and nominate one or two of them for this fantastic award!

Say Happy Mother's Day to a great Mom in your life today- tell them that you SEE the great contribution they are making and that it MATTERS! I guarantee you that every mom would love to hear that someone thinks she belongs in the Mom of the Year category.

Stained by Sharpie - Best Birthday Party Craft EVER

We received the Stained by Sharpie markers to review a bit ago and tried them with our kids. They really, really enjoyed them. So much so, that my oldest wanted us to buy t-shirts for him to decorate with his friends at his birthday party! So we did that.

We bought a few more sets of markers (with our own money even) and at my son’s birthday party we had about fifteen kids all sharing and drawing on shirts, both girls and boys. My son celebrated his tenth birthday and most of the party guests were in his class at school. Although there was a few kids that were older and younger as well.

By and large all the kids really enjoyed them. The range of artwork was impressive. My son Aiden has worn his two shirts a LOT since then. He has worn them to school, he has worn them as pajamas, he has added more to the shirt as time has progressed.

The ink has held up to the numerous wearings and washings far better then I expected. The shirts we purchased were inexpensive undershirts and have started to show more wear from washings then the ink has!

That being said, when using the markers one must be careful to put the ink where one wants the ink to go... Perhaps that should go without saying, however it was lost on a five year old little girl that I know, so I thought I would mention it.

Here are a couple pictures from the birthday party...

We have enjoyed the markers, they have some great colors and they work as well as you would expect them to work. We purchased extras for our party which should indicate how much we liked them. Highly recommended.

Today is my first born son's 10th birthday.

Sometimes I find it truly incredible that I have managed to survive 10 years of parenthood.

When I started this blog in 2006 Aiden was 4 years old.

He had just started his first year of school and had not yet been diagnosed with Autism.

It is staggering to think of the road we have travelled in the last 6 years.

I am so proud of you Aiden. We love you!

I was recently introduced to a really great organization - Speroway (formerly "Feed the Children - Canada"). They have a great contest going on right now where you could win an iPad HD, but more importantly they do amazing work in Haiti and here in Canada.

Speroway is all about delivering hope to needy children and that is something I can stand behind 100%. Here are some of the great things they are doing:

FEED-A-CHILD - Look into the face of a hungry child and you’ll see a child with real hopes, real fears, and a very real need to eat. From areas devastated by natural disasters to countries caught in the grip of poverty, countless hungry children need help!
CHILD CHAMPIONS - Reach into the life of a child through our child sponsorship program and become a “Child Champion”. You can impact a child’s life forever. Every child deserves basic necessities like food, medical care, and education. Changing a child’s future – can you think of anything more important?
MEDICAL TEAM - We seek your continued support for our medical teams. This program provides medicines and vitamins in its mobile clinics, along with food and other supplies. Assistance is also required in shipping containers of food, medicines and other life-saving essentials to overseas locations.
FIRST NATIONS - High unemployment rates and an extremely high cost of living results in First Nations communities in Northern Canada living in poverty. This can be unreasonably difficult for First Nation children who simply want to have a good meal everyday.
ABANDONED BABY CENTER - A baby’s feverish eyes show the suffering. Ragged breath points to pneumonia, tuberculosis or worse. The agony of slow starvation is heartbreaking, and every day babies like this are orphaned or abandoned in Kenya. They are innocent victims and their needs are urgent!

Learning to Do Less As A Life Strategy

In February I was lucky enough to go to the amazing Blissdom conference in Nashville. It was truly incredible and I really can't say enough good about it - you all should go in 2013.

But the problem is there is more than one session going on at a time and since I can't seem to be in more than one place at one time I missed MOST of the sessions.

I attended all of the photography sessions and they were AWESOME... but that meant that I missed all of the life development sessions, all of the business sessions and all of the writing sessions. And there is pretty much NOTHING good about that.

Thankfully there is Blissdom At Home!

I have been soaking up the sessions from the comfort of my own living room and it has been like opening a new gift every time I hit the play button.

Last week I listened to Christine Koh's Life Development session - "Do Less As A Life Strategy" and it hit me hard. (Many of you probably know Christine Koh as @bostonmamas )

It took me a few days to process WHY it hit me hard because it is not like Christine was telling a series of sad stories or showing pictures of starving babies or anything... and it honestly baffled me a bit.

But even the first few questions of her session hit me hard... she said:

"Raise your hand if you ever feel overwhelmed with clutter... physical or emotional... Raise your hand if you feel the only way to become/stay successful is to do more ... Raise your hand if you wish you could do less but still be creative, productive, inspired, tremendously awesome."

I was sitting in my living room, by myself raising my hand because in that moment I knew Christine was speaking directly to me... even if it was a recorded session from a few weeks ago.

As I continued to listen to Christine's talk I was more and more drawn in and I was taking notes like crazy... of course one of the best parts of listening to it from home is that I could PAUSE and REWIND when I missed something or when I just needed to hear something again. I really love that feature.

I think I listened to her say "When you do less of the unnecessary, creativity can flourish" and "when you remove clutter, paths emerge" about 5 times because I really needed those ones to sink in.

And here is why...

When you have a child with special needs (like my son with Autism) you are inundated pretty much constantly with all the things you need to be doing to help that child or to help your other children or to help your family... everything from different therapy techniques to various diets and educational methods.

It never stops.

There is always something new, something different to try, and no matter how much you do it will never ever ever be enough.

You will always be left wondering if you did enough to help your child become all they could be. There will always be someone questioning you whether you have done enough.

And added to that you have to keep track of all the appointments with doctors and specialists and counsellors- not just for your child with special needs, but also for your other children as well because siblings of children with special needs usually end up needing support of their own- and you have to keep track of all the information all of those people give you.

And then you have to work with the school and the specialists and the medical people and the therapists and everyone else under the sun to try and get everyone on the same page.

And it can be so completely overwhelming that the world around you begins to reflect the chaos of your mind... your house begins to look as chaotic as your overloaded mind and that doesn't help anyone because everyone knows a child with Autism needs a serene space to live in and chaos is never good.

But it feels like if you stop DOING all the THINGS you are SUPPOSED to be DOING everything will just fall apart and every time you turn around someone is telling you another thing you should be doing even though you can barely keep up as it is!

Then you sit down to listen to a message called "Do LESS As A Life Strategy" and suddenly you are crying even though it isn't a sad talk at all - because simplicity is SO WHAT WE NEED!

And so I listened to Christine talk and I cried and I loved it. And I am going to listen to her talk again. Probably a few more time actually until it really sinks in through the chaos that has built up in my mind and until I can come up with a plan to move from the clutter that is our lives right now to the simplicity that I KNOW we need.

I have deep gratitude to Christine and I don't even know her. I didn't get the chance to meet her at Blissdom. I wish I had because she is one very wise woman.

And to think- that was only ONE of the sessions available!

OUR REVIEW

This is an amazing series. I was surprised at how excited the kids were when it arrived in the mail for us to review. I watched it over the past week with the kids and we have learned SO MUCH! My boys (ages 8 and almost 10) were captivated by Frozen Planet. They have done an incredible job of showing the animals and the scenery right up close. The high quality of the blu-ray just makes everything look so amazing. Even my daughter (age 5) was fascinated by a lot of it!

I loved that Frozen Planet is a series and we were able to watch it a little at a time. We were able to take our time and talk about what we had learned as well. Even thought we have watched the whole series we could easily watch it several more times and not get bored. This is an all around excellent series.

This is a wonderful series to watch any time but especially as we celebrate Earth Day.

Rascal Flatts' new CD - CHANGED review

When I was at Blissdom in February I was lucky enough to see Rascal Flatts live and it was so fun. When the One2One network offered me the chance to review their new album Changed I signed up right away. As I was listening to Changed it was almost like I was back at Blissdom :)

In case you aren't familiar with Rascal Flatts the trio is comprised of singer Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus and guitarist Joe Don Rooney and they are some of country music's biggest superstars. Changed is their newest album and is new in stores this month.

Changed is their eighth studio album and their first with brand new material in two years. Since their musical debut in 2000, the band has sold over 21 million albums,25 million digital downloads and delivered 13 #1 singles to the top of the charts!

I really enjoyed the whole album. The music is down to earth and fun to listen to like good country music should be. It would be hard to pick a favourite song but I think I like the song Changed and A Little Home the best.

I am not a die-hard country music fan but I do have some favourites and Rascal Flatts is one of them- their music often tells a great story. Plus just look at these guys- don't they just look like a group of guys you'd like to have in your group of friends?

InkJoy by Paper Mate

I love pens and paper and anything that I used to classify as "school supplies". I was that nerdy kid who used to love shopping for new school supplies and I just never grew out of it. I still love getting new pens and notebooks!

Paper Mate sent some fun InkJoy pens to try out and opening the box totally gave me that "new school supplies" thrill.

The InkJoy 700 RT pens are amazing. I love them. They are my new favourite pens. They work beautifully well, they write smoothly, are nice to hold and just work like a pen should.

The InkJoy 300 RT pens are also nice and they come fun colours. The InkJoy 100RT is my least favourite but my kids love them.

Give the new InkJoy pens a try and you will probably love them :)
